07 Jul 2022 | #8 - Niche, Be Transparent, and Build in Public - Justin Green | 00:55:34
Justin's Bio: The real me.. (keep scrolling for the professional version) In my free time, I love to spend time with my fiancée, family, and friends. I’m usually in a gym or somewhere by the water during the summer (I hibernate during the winter). I love to read business and personal growth books, listen to podcasts, binge documentaries, or watch Boston sports during my downtime. My fiancée is a travel nurse, so we currently bounce around the United States every 13 weeks. I believe that life is too short to take it seriously all the time, so I try to inject humor often. A little laughter goes a long way.
I got my first job at the age of 17 while my peers focused on school. I grew up in a lower middle-class family until my father was disabled in his early 30’s which seemed to bring harder times. My parents did the best to provide for our family and I’m forever grateful for all they have done for me. I never went without the necessities. Rent was paid, lights were on, and food was always on the table. After college, life gave me a crash course on personal financial planning. I didn’t know what the stock market was until I was 22 years old. I had to learn everything they don’t teach you in school. That led me down a path of taking control of my own financial life, and I fell in love with it, so I decided to go back to school to learn how to help others take control of their financial lives too!
“Millennials want to be seen and heard by the financial planning profession.” As a sophomore in college, I received a phone call that my mother had been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. She passed away 6 months after her diagnosis (on the day before her health insurance lapsed!!) at the young age of 40. I had to grow up a lot quicker than many of my peers, and I decided early on that I was going to be very intentional with how I built my life. Like many of you, I have always had the entrepreneurial itch. My first entrepreneurial endeavor was the classic lemonade stand story. I grew up in a neighborhood with an outdoor basketball court, and during the summer they had men’s league games. I saw an opportunity and convinced my mom to let me set up a Gatorade stand next to the courts and started selling. I knew from day 1 of pursuing the journey of becoming a financial planner that I wanted to create my own business that was different from any other financial planning firm you’ve seen. Let’s shake up the traditional model of the financial industry together.
Certified Financial Planner™ Professional Master of Science in Personal Financial Planning, Kansas State University I decided to pursue my interest in personal finance a few years after receiving a Bachelors of Science in Sports Management from the State University of New York at Cortland. I was living in Manhattan, Kansas (the Little Apple) at the time and I decided to enroll in the Personal Financial Planning program at Kansas State University. In 2016, I completed the education requirement of the CFP® certification and entered the profession at a small fee-only firm on Cape Cod, MA. During that time, I became a CFP® Professional after fulfilling all of the necessary requirements. In December 2019, I graduated from K-State with a Master of Science in Personal Financial Planning (MSPFP). At some point, I will probably add more designations and add to the alphabet soup after my name.
14 Jul 2022 | #9 - Leaving the World of Transactional Relationships - Leland Gross | 01:00:23
Leland's Bio: I am passionate about building relationships and coaching people. It has been said that personal finance is more personal than finance. I find that true. When working with someone’s finances, I don’t often hear them talk about their investment returns right off the bat. Oftentimes I first hear them talk about the things they care about most in life like their family, their dreams, their fears, their stresses, etc. I believe finances are a tool in our lives that can cause one of two things; anxiety or confidence. I am passionate about helping individuals and families foster confidence and an abundance mindset around their life goals. After many years working in the insurance and broker-dealer world, I grew tired of transactional relationships. I was working to do financial planning, but It was more product sales than relationships. That is where PeaceLink Financial Planning LLC came in. I founded PLFP to make a real difference in people’s lives. Through a focus on the financial planning process and building relationships, I am able to understand my clients and what they desire in life. This allows me to tailor advice in a way to maximize the resources at their disposal and help them develop the life that they long for both now and in the future. As a fee-only CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ ,I have the privilege of serving my clients nationwide to experience the life that they desire. Being “fee-only” means my only source of income is directly from my clients. I don’t get paid through hidden fees or commissions for selling products. This helps minimize the conflicts of interest in our relationship and puts us on the “same side of the table” to achieve your goals. When I am not working with my clients, you can find me spending time with my family (my wife, Lindy, our son, Levi, and our pup, Sutton) being with our family and friends, playing pickleball, or doing anything that involves water (swimming, surfing, boating).

03 Aug 2022 | #11 - Copywriting, Content Creation, and Building on Linkedin - Max Pashman | 01:06:03
MAX PASHMAN, CFP® FINANCIAL PLANNER Your priorities should be addressed by what's best for your needs rather than someone else's sales quota. Unfortunately, the traditional business model in the financial industry has failed to recognize this. Rather than jumping right into a client-facing role, Max decided to invest his time learning more about the financial sector. He worked for several successful teams that guided him towards the appropriate steps towards understanding the financial planning process over time. During his training, he assisted hundreds of households to get them closer to their financial goals and obtained his Series 7, 66, and life + health licenses. By the time he gained the appropriate knowledge, he had started building his book of business and established a successful online presence to push financial education for his followers. While advising clients at One Wealth Management, Max had begun to understand how he truly wanted to create the best financial planning for his clients. He realized to serve his existing and upcoming clients better required transforming his business into an actual fiduciary model. After obtaining his CFP designation, he founded Pashman Financial as a fee-only company built on that promise.

31 Aug 2022 | #15 - Having Hard Conversations and Setting Expectations - Phil Telpner | 01:04:19
Phil's Bio: After college graduation, I went to work on the floor of the exchange and before long, I scraped up a little money and leased a membership at the Chicago Board of Trade. At that time, the 30-Year Treasury Bond pit was the largest, most active futures contract in the world. That’s where my journey began. While personally trading a thousand contracts a day at times, I saw firsthand how devastating a lack of discipline and planning can be to your financial health. After a series of business opportunities, I was offered a wealth management position with the Wall Street firms Morgan Stanley and later at JP Morgan. The training and experience at the big firms was great but with their emphasis on selling financial products, I became frustrated. My compensation was largely based on what I sold, not on how I advised regarding wealth accumulation, retirement or tax planning. I had learned years ago from my father, a CPA with his own practice, that relationships are your most valuable asset. My father, in fact, has served some clients and their families for over 50 years- and that is not an accident. My firm, Breakout Private Wealth, was founded on that principle. Everything begins and ends with my family. My boys, Andrew and Blake, now teenagers, have taught me more about life than any book or designation. Our time together at the rink, on the field or just at home challenges me to continue to be a better version of myself. My wife Jami, who had no idea that a blind date at the Chicago Blackhawks game twenty plus years ago would turn into a lifetime of hockey rinks and a garage full of sporting equipment, keeps us all on track.
07 Sep 2022 | #16 - Methodical Thinking, Twitter, and Working with Physicians - Tyler Olson | 00:59:00
Tyler's Bio: What I believe : I believe people are their own best financial advocates, even if they need help from planners like me. To that end, I give all of my knowledge to the people I work with so that they are more and more empowered to advocate for themselves. When I am needed less, that is a win, that is the best outcome. When I’m not working you’ll find me spending time doing volunteer work in the community, and getting out into nature with my wife and our young son.

17 Nov 2022 | #25 - Financial Date Nights and Creating Amazing Client Experiences - Jim Crider | 00:57:45
Jim's Bio: Prior to starting Intentional Living FP, I worked primarily with the standard clients of most wealth management firms— financially successful families seeking guidance with the wealth they’ve accumulated over decades. While I cherish each client I’ve served, I came to find the clients I enjoy most: families that desire to achieve early financial independence for the sake of spending significant time with the people they care about, doing the things they enjoy. I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, and the message I tell every client I work with is that my role is to guide— to live where my clients’ lives and money intersect so they can live the life they want to live. The money is simply a tool, a resource that is there to help you live the life you want. When I’m not engaged in a conversation with people about life, priorities, and doing what is important to them, I can be found chasing around my kids, Atticus, Asher, & Arlo, spending time with my wife, Kendra, or out on an adventure.

15 Dec 2022 | #28 - Attracting Clients and Embracing the Grind - Travis Gatzemeier | 00:37:35
Travis's Bio: Prior to my career as a financial planner, I graduated with a business degree from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. I began my professional career at a large brokerage firm where I learned the ins and outs of the financial markets. During this time I was able to gain valuable experience in financial markets, risk management, and personal finance. I then found my path working as a wealth manager for a small financial firm serving pre-retirees and retirees which included selling insurance to clients. I realized that insurance sales mixed with financial planning created a huge conflict of interest! I made the decision to become a fee-only financial planner in order to give my clients real financial advice with limited conflicts of interest. On a personal note, I live in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area but grew up a small-town kid in central Texas. When I am not helping my clients, I enjoy the outdoors, traveling, reading, or listening to the next queued up podcast. In addition, I am a supporter of the professional sports teams in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. An avid outdoorsman – hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing, and everything in between. I have a husky that keeps me busy and active named Koda. Who is also the CEO (see below). My favorite getaway is Montana where I have family! Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/travisgatzemeier/

21 Dec 2022 | #29 - Financial Therapy and Compassionate Planning - Daniel Kopp | 00:53:35
Daniel's Bio Grief changes everything. I know that all too well from personal experience as I became a widower at 31 and before that, father to 3 children in heaven. My passion and purpose now is to take what I’ve learned from those experiences combined with financial planning and advice to be a help to you in your own unique grief journey. Wise Stewardship works together with you to help gain stability in your current financial situation, prioritize next steps, and walk with you into a new and different future. Here’s the rest of my story and why I became a financial planner. I’ve always been interested in money since I was a little kid, including out-bidding my siblings for chores-for-hire, to providing loans to my siblings and friends when they had spent all their money and diligently saving my allowance for future goals. Over time this evolved into reading the stock pages in the newspaper as a young teenager and then choosing to major in economics in college. After completing Air Force ROTC at Purdue University, I commissioned as an officer into the Air Force in 2009 but continued my personal interest into personal finances, investing, and all things money-related. In my college years and early 20s, I read hundreds of books and spent thousands of hours studying financial planning topics. I also had the opportunity to be a volunteer financial counselor during many of the years when I was on active duty in addition to helping and educating family and friends over the years. Thanks to countless help along the way, I learned more about the financial services industry and found my way to fee-only, fiduciary financial planning. It was through these experiences that sparked my passion and helped me realize what I wanted to do whenever I decided to leave the military! As an officer on active duty for almost 9 years, along with a brother, sister, and brother-in-law in the military, I experienced firsthand the benefits and challenges that military life can have on all aspects of life especially finances. Frequent changes like TDY’s, deployments, and PCS’s add unique potential opportunities and obstacles to meeting goals and dreams. Add in the often disparate and sometimes confusing military pay, benefits, scattered military benefits and discounts, and countless people offering advice or services, and there is often a lack of clarity on how best to optimize all of these to best meet goals. I’ve seen almost everything military life can throw at you and been through much of what you probably have questions about. I’ve learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t; what’s important and what isn’t. I’m now able to use these vast experiences to help my clients navigate the challenges of the busy military life, get the most out of your hard-earned benefits, and help you achieve your goals.

Jon's Bio: Jon is a long-time advocate of simple, low-cost investing. His master’s thesis showed how university endowments can generate more wealth (and take on less risk) by using passive index funds. Jon’s other research has been published in the peer-reviewed Financial Planning Association’s Journal of Financial Planning. Jon has had the fortune of presenting his research to advisors across the country. In 2019, Jon and his wife Lien dedicated one full year to travel. The two started their adventure by taking four months to convert a cargo van into their home on wheels. They then spent several months traversing the western United States and Mexico. Lien documented their adventure on her blog.
11 Jan 2023 | #31 - Serving Women in Tech and Creating Career Opportunities for Underrepresented People - Meg Bartelt | 00:44:57
Meg's Bio: "I worked in the tech industry straight out of college. Through the first Dot Com Boom. Aaaaand through the crash. When I got laid off. Fun times. In my 30s, I got bored with my work in tech, and I changed careers into financial planning. I also got married, had two babies, moved cross-country twice, went back to school for a graduate degree, bought my first home, decided (I mean, not unilaterally) to have my husband retire from tech and become a stay-at-home dad, and started a business (this one!). I don’t know if I’d have had the guts to do all of that without the money and flexibility my husband and I both got from the tech industry. Which is why I love working with women in their early to mid career in the tech industry. It’s such an exciting time of life. And the opportunities are almost boundless. But it’s so stressful. And oh my goodness, what do you mean “estimated taxes”?! I’ve learned that if we are intentional and if we do the work, our opportunities in the tech industry can help us build that fulfilling life we all crave. What else about me? Wellllll, I grew up in Newport News, Virginia. I went to Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where I majored in Economics, gained 10 pounds (unlimited Fruit Loops? whut?!), and learned to banish writer’s block. I moved to the Bay Area in 1998 and worked as a technical writer for 10 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, mostly in the software-security sector. ‘Tis also, it should be noted, where I met my husband. We both worked on the Engineering team at a small startup. After I changed careers, I got my Master’s of Science in Financial Planning from Golden Gate University. I then worked for fee-only Registered Investment Advisors, back in Tidewater Virginia. In search of a home better suited to us, my husband, my two daughters, and I moved to Bellingham, WA. Julia the Dog—a sweet girl, if not technically a good girl—joined us a couple years later. So much of what makes me happy—hiking, biking, cooking, yoga, kale, and ancient minivans missing hubcaps—are part of the fabric of life here. For those rare times when I have a stretch of silence and time, I love reading books about European royal history, sci-fi/fantasy, and Anything Russia. I am a Certified Financial Planner™ professional, a Registered Life Planner™ and a member of the XY Planning Network and the Financial Planning Association."

08 Feb 2023 | #35 - Making Prenups Less Taboo - Kaylin Dillon | 00:38:17
Kaylin's Bio: When my husband and I got married we first signed a prenuptial agreement. By that point I’d already learned that it was up to us to make sure we upheld the terms of our own agreement. We didn’t have an authority figure reminding us how to title our accounts and property, paying attention to which accounts should receive what type of income deposits, or making sure we maintain life insurance, as we’d agreed to do. But I started thinking: wouldn’t it be nice if we did? Financial advisors are in a unique position to help families proactively keep family law out of their family’s choices. Whether it’s for a divorce or a marriage, couples don’t enter into marital agreements lightly. This is why I care about helping couples uphold the agreements they’ve made all the while helping them plan confidently for their future together.
16 Feb 2023 | #36 - From Wall Street to Sushi to Fee-Only Planning - John Stoj | 00:36:17
“John is the only financial advisor you’ll ever meet who’s managed over $3 billion and a sushi kitchen.” After working through the crucible of the 2008/9 financial crisis, I decided to take a page from Monty Python... “And Now for Something Completely Different.” In 2010 I opened Rold Rite Sushi, a wholesaler of fresh sushi and other Asian foods to the trade. I grew the business until I sold it in 2015 to take on the most important job of my life to date, as a stay-at-home dad. When my son entered school, I knew I wanted to return to finance. This time I have a selfless desire to help people that I learned by working in the food business. Food service workers want to make people feel better. I want to share knowledge and wisdom that can help folks better prepare for the future. I want my clients to feel better and worry less about their future because they have a plan for it.
For investors, simple is better than complex. Einstein said, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” My mission is to give you more simplicity and less complexity – in both investing and in life.

12 Apr 2023 | #44 - Serving Military Families and Hiring People Not Positions - Sean Gillespie | 00:51:47
Sean's Bio: Dinner was unremarkable. Fixed menu rubber chicken fare. Perfectly adequate, just not the over-the-top good stuff we were used to Tom picking out. But the seminar given during dessert changed our lives. In less than sixty minutes, we were shown the simple outline of a financial plan to get us moving in a sustainable fashion toward a comfortable retirement. And afterward, Tom introduced us to the man who would be our agent for twenty years. Dave helped put us on our path to financial independence in 1994 and helped us make the adjustments along the way to keep us on it. And when I retired after twenty years of Navy service, he mentored me into the financial services business. Among dozens of things Dave taught me over twenty years, two of them were critically important. One of them was the sort of product knowledge that got me credentialed and sufficiently competent to help others identify their own goals for financial independence. Far more important was the spirit of service he exemplified every day. Lots of people talk the “client always comes first” talk. Dave walked it, being just as candid with us when we were on track as when he thought we were getting ready to make a mistake. And we always felt his recommendations were in our best interests. It wasn’t just that his interests were secondary. They didn’t enter into the conversation at all. It was in that spirit that I got licensed in 2013 to help families plan for their own sustainable financial futures. My wife Jennifer and I have been married since 1992. When I retired, we decided to put down roots in Chesapeake Virginia, in the community where we have owned a home since 2001 and, when not stationed overseas, raised our three daughters.

Matt's Bio: So, what's important to me: spending time with my family, pursuing a career I'm passionate about and running a business that allows me to partner with like-minded individuals. My dad passed away at age 58 and I constantly remind myself that life is short, and I better not regret how I live it. I am now lucky enough to say I work in a field that brings me happiness and fosters my personal values. A perfectionist by nature and self-proclaimed finance/tax nerd, I genuinely love helping individuals simplify their financial lives so they too can focus on what's most important to them.
26 Apr 2023 | #46 - Helping Clients Achieve Financial Eudaimonia - Brett Koeppel | 00:34:16
Brett's Bio: I’ve spent the majority of my career working for a large wealth management firm. Over time, I realized the focus was more on how to make the firm more money, not how to make a greater difference in the lives of the families served. I knew there was a better way. In 2019, I chose to leave the brokerage world and establish Eudaimonia Wealth. As an independent, fee-only registered investment advisor, I'm proud to provide advice 100% of the time under the fiduciary standard; a legal requirement to always put the interests of my clients first. I’m passionate about the work I do and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. I hold the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation, and am a member of the following professional organizations:
I grew up in Kenmore, attended Canisius College, and live in the Elmwood Village alongside my wife, Erin. I currently serve on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity Buffalo, the board of directors for the Financial Planning Association of WNY, and enjoy staying actively involved in the many things that make Buffalo great. On the personal side, I'm a Buffalo sports enthusiast, have played ice hockey and soccer for most of my life, and love the shift in perspective that traveling provides. Here are a few fun facts about me that you might not find elsewhere!
03 May 2023 | #47 - Serving People in the Accumulation Phase - Jeff McDermott | 00:31:49
Jeff's Bio: I received a bachelor's degree in finance and an MBA both from the University of Central Florida. In 2016 I completed the requirements to earn the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation. Over time I have gained nearly two decades of experience evaluating investments, retirement plans, insurance offerings, and many of the complicated elements of your financial life you may be struggling with. More recently in 2021, I added the Certified Student Loan ProfessionalTM designation to gain the knowledge to provide more complete planning around student loans within a client's overall financial plan. I always had a vision for a firm dedicated to helping people become financially independent, not just helping those who are already there. The decisions we make early in our financial lives, whether they are good or bad, will compound positively or negatively for decades into the future. In 2020 I founded Create Wealth Financial Planning to help the individuals and families I work with make positive financial decisions while they still have time to make a dramatic impact. In between client meetings I like to keep a clear head playing piano - usually classical or rock songs, or weightlifting out in the garage and getting myself ready to compete some day. I also enjoy working on my public speaking as a member of the Deerwood Toastmasters of Jacksonville, FL. On a nice morning you might catch me hacking up the golf course. I married my wonderful wife Michele in 2007 after we met in college a few years earlier. We live in Saint Johns, Florida raising our two amazing daughters and we love spending time with family and friends, a quick trip to St. Augustine or to the beach, and cheering on our favorite sports teams.

17 May 2023 | #49 - Spending Time Doing What You're Good At - Nick Nauta | 00:35:54
Nick's Bio: Nick struggled through his first few years in the profession. He relates the struggle to his early memories of money living in Spring Lake, Michigan. One of the things he learned about money when he was growing up was the people who seemed to have the most of it, weren’t inherently happier than those who didn’t. When he started in the financial advising industry, the profession appeared to be all about making money, something he didn’t hold in high esteem. Some years later, around the time his son was born, Nick finally started to figure out his place in the financial planning world. He was challenged to answer the question of why he did what he did. Thinking back on his early memories of money, he concluded he was in the financial planning profession to help people realize their life goals. Nick enjoys giving back to the community as well as his profession. He is currently the past president of the Davies Project, Treasurer of Loaves and Fishes homeless shelter, President of Delta-side business association, and Secretary of Kiwanis of Delta Township. Nick is a Certified Financial Planner™, Chartered Life Underwriter™, Registered Life Planner™, board member of the Greater Lansing Estate Planning Council, and a member of the following professional associations: National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) Financial Planning Association (FPA) Kinder Institute of Life Planning Greater Lansing Estate Planning Council Nick's Social:

19 Jul 2023 | #57 - Flat Fee Planning, IULs, and Basing a Fee on Complexity - Andy Panko | 00:44:36
Andy's Bio: In my senior year at Delaware, I interviewed at a few of the large household name financial services companies for roles they called "financial advisor." I assumed those would be the sort of financial planning careers I was thinking of. Unfortunately, I quickly realized those jobs were not about giving financial advice or guidance. Instead, they were just commissioned sales positions to sell the companies' products - life insurance, annuities and mutual funds. I was completely turned off by that and gave up on trying to find a financial planning job. I ended up getting a corporate job at a large insurance company After graduating college in 2000, I spent the next 19 years working for multiple global insurance, banking and brokerage firms. I worked in functions that involved the creation, risk management, trading, portfolio management and financing of many of the insurance and investment products and strategies used throughout the financial services industry. My roles included pension risk management, investment management, securities financing and investment fund analysis and diligence Along the way I went back to school - in 2004 I earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Rutgers Business School. I've also taught multiple semesters as an adjunct lecturer for the finance department of Rutgers Business School In 2016, I had an experience that reignited my desire to do personal financial planning. My mother was transitioning into retirement and was trying to figure out how best to claim her Social Security benefits. After getting different answers from different people - including different answers from within the Social Security Administration itself - I dug in and helped her research the relevant laws and regulations. We ultimately got to the correct answer and she was able to make the best claiming decision for her and her circumstances At that point, the proverbial light went off for me - helping people make decisions about their retirement finances was what I was supposed to be doing with my life. Since that point in 2016, I committed myself to getting educated on all things related to financial planning for retirement. In that journey, I obtained the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ ("CFP®") designation, the Retirement Income Certified Professional® ("RICP®") designation and the IRS Enrolled Agent ("EA") license In 2019, I left the institutional investment and banking world to launch Tenon Financial. I also started a separate tax return preparation and filing company, Tenon Tax Preparation. And I remain committed to sharing knowledge and helping educate others - Andy

Vrishin's Bio: Originally born and raised in New Delhi, India, I came to the USA when I was 17 to attend college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A little over a decade later, I have worked as a technology consultant, lived in 7 cities, gotten married to my lovely wife Sharanya, and picked up a liking (plus a license!) for Scuba diving. We have been calling the DC area (Arlington, VA) home for just under a year, although we do spend a considerable time in sunny California! Having learnt about investing, I wanted to find a good advisor who would be able to round out my spreadsheets and was willing to work with young professionals, but found the advisors either had high minimums or were trying to sign me up for sub-par financial products to earn their commissions. I started CapitalWe to relieve financial stress for all young professionals as they transition between various stages of life: school, marriage, home-buying and all other firsts!
