Thanks for joining me for this weeks episode of One For The Road. This week i am joined by Dan O'Reilly. Daniel is one of the UK’s Largest Influencers, a comedian, actor, musician, viral video star and social influencer. Daniel grew up on a council estate in Weybridge and did performing arts at Brooklands college, before moving out and living on his own from the age of 15. Daniel then worked on the cruise ships for many, many years, travelling the world as a compere, host and comedian. Daniel went on to live in Clapham for a while and saw his career begin to flourish. With a portfolio of businesses Daniel enjoys a busy lifestyle mixed with business and pleasure. Daniel is a father to two beautiful girls and enjoys spending quality time with them and his wife Shelley. After being diagnosed with severe ADHD and beginning his sobriety again, Daniel also set up a page on Facebook and Instagram called 'Men And Their Emotions' (M.A.T.E) an accessible, open and supportive group for MEN to post their feelings, thoughts and current life issues. Upon seeing the responses from men around the world to some of the posts on the group he was blown away and continues to be touched by the kindness and support offered by strangers. This all led to Daniel wanting to start up his own podcast and invite guests to join him in opening up about past experiences and talk about all things mental health, family & sobriety. The podcast, Menace 2 Sobriety has not only helped the 32,500 members in the M.A.T.E Facebook group, but has also received incredible feedback from viewers across all platforms.  With 2022 being a busy year, Daniel sold out his O2 stand-up show and released his British movie 'The Last Heist', which became the number one Amazon Crime Movie and is currently in the remits for a release on Netflix. @dappersinstagram (Instagram)@dapperlaughs (Twitter)Daniel O'Reilly (Facebook)@dapperlaughs (Tiktok)@menacetosobrietyuk (Podcast Instagram)https://www.youtube.com/@menacetosobrietypodcast (Podcast Youtube)@hyprr_films (Film Instagram)

12 Apr 2023Jenna Hewitt00:56:01

Thanks for joining me for this week's episode of One For The Road; on this week's show I am joined by Jenna Hewitt. Jenna is a Mum, Wife and runs her own company as a professional Wedding and Event Planner.  I’ve known Jenna for over 2 years when she approached me for help with her drinking.  Having grown up in the nineties and noughties binge drinking era, Jenna started really questioning her relationship with alcohol after having children.  From the outside, Jenna was thriving – a successful businesswoman and Mum to two beautiful children.  But, behind closed doors, and hiding behind the “mummy wine culture,” she felt that alcohol really started to impact her life and her relationship with herself.   This led her to her own breaking point.  Speaking from the heart, Jenna’s story will resonate with many people struggling the in the grey area when it comes to their own drinking.

28 Jul 2021Rok Soba.00:56:01

Welcome back, and thanks for joining me again for Season 2 of One For The Road.

We are starting off the season with my amazing new sponsors Rok Soba.

The boys share with us their journey to sobriety, and how their brand Rok Soba came about.

After an alcohol-fuelled brawl in a pub nearly saw the boys in jail, Lee and Shaun's lives took a drastic change.

They both embarked on a path to sobriety, leaving their corporate careers in the city, and in 2017 the idea for Rok Soba was born after the name came to Shaun in a dream.

The boys have gone from strength to strength with the brand, and after beginning with accessories and merchandise, in 2019 they introduced an alcohol-free beer called "Zero Fear" and their recently launched AF beers “Voyager IPA” and “777 Belgian Triple” to raise enough revenue build an Inspiration Centre, and Foundation to help assist and re-skill recovering addicts.

Rok Soba's mission is to change perceptions about sobriety, and spread the word that just because you don't drink, doesn't mean you can't rock sober!

I am so proud and honoured to have Rok Soba as the sponsor for my show, and I can't wait for you to hear their story.

15 Sep 2021Liam Fox.00:52:41

For our final episode of Season 2 of One For The Road, I am joined by the actor and writer, Liam Fox, well known for his role as Dan Spencer in ITV's hit soap, Emmerdale Farm.

Liam shares with us his story of life growing up with a father who battled the bottle for 40 years.

He talks about his younger memories as a child, and how his Dad, with the support of his second wife, managed to abstain from drinking for 15 years, until the sad passing of his wife sent him back into the toxic relationship with alcohol once more, and wreaked havoc with Liam's dad's health until he passed away in February this year.

It has been another incredible season, and thank you so much for all of your ongoing and continued support.

13 Oct 2021Cherry Healey.00:55:13

Welcome back to Season 3 of One For The Road. This week on episode one, I'm joined by TV presenter and documentary creator, Cherry Healey.

As well as being a familiar face to us all as host of the hugely popular ’10 Years Younger’ and ‘Inside the Factory’, Cherry has also presented alcohol related documentaries on both BBC and Netflix. On this week’s episode she discusses her own relationship with drinking and her experiences with both abstinence and moderation. We discuss how often the real dangers of binge drinking can take place in our own homes rather than as portrayed in the media and how important it is to be able to recognise the red flags when it comes to our relationship with alcohol and the normalisation of daily drinking.

Charlie is an inspirational young man of 25 years old, who left a small village in North Wales and moved across the world to Australia, where he has set up and is currently building a community for young people to help build self-belief and change mindset.

10 Nov 2021Jenny Valentish.00:48:37

Thanks for joining me for this weeks episode of One For The Road.

This week I'm joined by Author Jenny Valentish.

Jenny is an English journalist who moved to Australia 15 years ago and she also writes books. One of them, Woman of Substances, is an addiction memoir that uses her story of drug and alcohol use as a case study from which to explore the ways women experience mental health, trauma, eating disorders and addiction, interviewing neuroscientists, researchers and clinicians.

Her latest book, Everything Harder Than Everyone Else: Why Some of Us Push Our Bodies to Extremes, riffs on the idea that there is a fine line between hedonism and endurance. Jenny is also a board director of SMART Recovery in Australia, and while she didn't touch alcohol for eight years, she now drinks in what she calls a sensible way.

01 Dec 2021Leanne Bayliss.00:57:11

Thanks for joining me for the final episode of season 3 of One For The Road.

Today I am joined by Leanne Bayliss, sober blogger, scriptwriter, super mum, and proud Brummie.

After being adopted when she was younger, Leanne found herself on a series of uphill life struggles that in turn led to both an alcohol and drug addiction.

With little self-worth, by the time Leanne was in her twenties, she just wanted to end it all. After giving birth to her daughter Darcey, who was born with complex health needs, Leanne found her drinking increasing, to the point that her thoughts took her to a very dark place and she sat down and wrote a goodbye letter to her daughter

As friends around Leanne began noticing her mental health struggles, they intervened and so began the story of Leanne's recovery.

Leanne is an incredible and strong woman who has never given up in the face of adversity, and who has taken everything she has been through and turned it into a lesson to help others so that no one has to go through what she went through; she is starting conversations that people are dying in silence, and loudly banging the sobriety drum which she plans to make a whole lot louder.

In this week's episode, we go back to Rich's childhood and address where his use of alcohol all began and how it came to play such a large role in Rich's adult life, and what events made Rich decide to embark on a journey of sobriety.

09 Feb 2022Clare Pooley.00:55:34

Thanks for joining me for another episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by Clare Pooley.

Clare spent nearly 20 years in the heady world of advertising where she worked hard and played harder. Then, when her third child was born, she quit to be a full-time mum and she wholly embraced the concept of ‘me time’ and ‘wine o’clock.’ By 2015, she knew the game was up, and she quit drinking. Her therapy was writing a blog called Mummy was a Secret Drinker. That blog became a memoir, The Sober Diaries. Clare now writes fiction. Her bestselling debut novel - The Authenticity Project - is published in 29 languages, and her second novel is out in May.

23 Feb 2022Johnny Lawrence.00:58:25

Thanks for joining me for the last episode of this season's One For The Road. This week I am joined by The self Development Coach, Jonny Lawrence.

Johnny’s journey is one that started with complete rejection in all areas of his life. The biggest source of rejection was from his Father. Johnny is a witness to domestic violence and a survivor of physical child abuse, and this trauma defined his life for quite some time. He used alcohol as a method of coping for many decades until one day his addiction and his trauma, collided and created the biggest shift in his life that he had ever experienced; the shift towards becoming alcohol-free and helping others.

Supporting people to improve and change all aspects of their lives became his passion which led him to become The Self Development Coach. He found from working with a diverse range of people, and also from healing from his childhood trauma, that he had a passion and a talent for supporting people with their self-development.

Johnny is the creator of the Super Self program and the founder of the School Of Self Development that supports, guides and educates people towards becoming unstuck and achieving what they want from their life. Johnny also hosts a popular podcast called The Self Development Podcast, where he has conversations with industry leaders surrounding self-development in a vast array of areas and topics.

09 Mar 2022Sober spring special with Richard Piper00:31:32

Thanks for joining me for this bonus sober spring special of One For The Road.

Today’s episode is with Richard Piper, CEO of Alcohol Change UK.

We discuss Stigma, Sober shaming and the start of Sober Spring, and of course my 24 hour Liveathon on the 26th of March.

Alcohol Change UK work to end the harm caused by alcohol. Helping tens of thousands of people take control of their drinking and provide vital advice for families desperate to help a loved one. They are not anti-alcohol; they are for a future in which people drink as a conscious choice, not by default. They want those who drink too much, and their loved ones, to have access to high-quality support whenever it’s needed, without shame or stigma.

They help people to find alcohol services in their area and support tens of thousands of people and their families online via our peer support groups and advice hub. Over 200,000 people used their Try Dry app to monitor their drinking this year alone, and many of them were able to successfully reduce or stop drinking.

Through their Blue Light programme they work with some of the UK's most vulnerable people, who are too often considered to be ‘beyond help’. They train local services to support them, saving the NHS and other frontline services money, and more importantly changing and saving lives.

23 Mar 2022Cat Sims00:56:14

Welcome back to another season of One For The Road.

To launch season 5 I am joined by the wonderful Cat Simms.

Cat is a content creator, podcaster and soon-to-be-author who is still trying to figure the whole ‘adulting’ thing out.

She’s made a living out of documenting her failures and successes as a 40 year old woman, a mother and a wife across various social media platforms.

Her mission in life is to make as many women as possible feel ‘seen’ and to make them realise that they are never, ever, ‘the only one.’ She’s honest AF, sober, wonderfully self-deprecating and willing to say all the things the rest of us hide away and, in doing so, manages to make us all feel a little bit better about our perfectly messy lives.

30 Mar 2022Philip Barantini00:48:52

Thanks for tuning in to this weeks episode of One For The Road.

This week I am joined by film director Philip Barantini.

After 20 years of performing in front of the camera - including roles in the massively successful Band of Brothers, Chernobyl, Ned Kelly and

Humans, Philip Barantini transitioned into directing in the late 2010s, marking his first short film with the award-winning Seconds Out, written by and starring Robbie O'Neill.

Following this, Barantini helmed the BIFA nominated short film Boiling Point, starring Stephen Graham, which was then adapted into the hotly anticipated one-shot feature of the same name in 2021; both movies were co-written with Barantini's frequent collaborator James Cummings.

Boiling Point saw its international debut in competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and premiered in the UK at the BFI London Film Festival in October 2021. The film has garnered glowing reviews from both critics and audiences, who have called the film "dizzying" [The Guardian] and "utterly compelling" [Variety], commending the film for its "piano-wire tension" [Time Out] and performances - "Stephen Graham is phenomenally mesmerising" [HEYUGUYS]. It recently won 4 BIFA's including best supporting actress (Vinette Robinson), best cinematography, best casting and best sound. and was nominated in 11 categories.

06 Apr 2022James Veck-Gilodi.00:50:43

Thanks for joining me for this weeks episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by James Veck-Gilodi from the English alternative rock band Deaf Havana.

After many years battling alcohol and substance addiction, in 2020 after the break down of his marriage and his relationship with his brother in ruins, Deaf Havana decided to call it a day and walk away. They booked shows to cover their remaining debts and after that, Deaf Havana would be finished. Then COVID happened. The shows were cancelled, and the band didn’t have to think about their future for a long time. It took until April 2021 after several failed attempts, for James to take the leap and attend an AA meeting and he has been sober ever since. On this weeks episode James shares with us what that journey looked like for him, and how by removing just one thing from his life, alcohol, he was able to rebuild the damaged relationships and breathe new life into Deaf Havana once more, as the band re grouped and created a brand new album within three weeks.

20 Jul 2022Michael Sargood.01:03:35

Joining us on this weeks episode of One For The Road is Michael Sargood.

Michael is the founder of the British alcohol-free news and events website SoberSocials.co.uk.

At the depths of his alcohol addiction, he was drinking up to a litre of neat vodka per night and was diagnosed as being alcohol dependent.; despite this he managed to hold down a good job until the last few months of his addiction.

He decided to quit alcohol in March 2020 and went to live with his parents for the first three months of his recovery. He was sober seven months before relapsing in October 2020. That "one" drink lasted four months and saw him placed under the care of the local mental health team. On 17 February 2021, after losing over 24 hours to blackout, he went sober again. That was the last time he drank. This time round, he is trying to recover differently. Instead of just "subtracting" substances, people and places, he is focussing on adding things to his life: new friends, interests, ambitions.

27 Jul 2022Mike Faria.01:09:42

Thanks for joining me for the final episode of season 6 of One For The Road; this week I am joined by Mike Faria.

Mike is a 37 year old content creator, born and raised in New Jersey. As a teenager, he experimented with drugs and alcohol to deal with his childhood trauma. In October 2019, he went into a major depression and began drinking more than he ever had in his life. He had to take leave from his job to try to function through the drunken hours, and was hoping the break would help him to quit drinking, but sadly it progressed. In January 2020, he was found barely breathing in his house from acute liver failure, hepatic encephalopathy, and kidney failure. Two weeks prior he had noticed my eyes turned yellow as toxins had built up in his blood from his liver not functioning; Mike was rushed to the ER and was in a coma for almost 3 weeks. He woke up on January 27 to be told he did not qualify for a liver transplant and that he would have to be sober for 6 months to even make the list. Doctors said there was very little chance of survival even with a liver transplant. Mike was 268 lbs when he woke up, and had to learn how to walk and eat all over again. Within three months, Mikes liver miraculously healed and he was given a second chance at life. Mike shares his story with us, and the gratitude he feels to be able to do so.

Thanks for joining me for this weeks episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by Jo Ferbrache, also known by some as Sober Jo, who stopped drinking in January 2019 after she'd decided enough was enough and something had to change. She was a grey area drinker with an unhealthy relationship with alcohol - celebrate, commiserate - any excuse. She also used alcohol as a way to self-medicate her ADHD. Jo worked for a brewery and in advertising, a 'work hard, drink harder' culture. Jo completed a year-long charity challenge, raising over £15,000 for charity whilst changing her life for the better. Jo is a leader for the mindful drinking movement in Jersey, where she lives, and is passionate about sharing her Sober Journey to raise awareness and help others. She runs events on and offline for the sober community and is a certified coach, offering a 12-week Sober programme.

09 Nov 2022"Tweak Life" tips with Louise Morgan.00:36:38

Thanks for joining me for this bonus episode of One For The Road. I am joined by Louise Morgan from Tweak Life, our sponsor of One For The Road Podcast.

Louise has spent 2 decades in financial services, alongside her day job as a financial adviser. Louise set up Tweak Life which is a platform that brings together well-being providers, research, tools, apps and charities all together in one place.

Following her experience of post-natal depression and many life events of other people around her, Louise wanted to provide a platform where people could easily find the help they needed for free. Louise stopped drinking 5 months ago, and we discuss on todays episode all of the advantages that not drinking has brought to Louises life. It was not the volume of alcohol that led Louise to spoke drinking, but the anxious feeling it left her with. Louise is now proudly alcohol free, and supports the message that you do not have to be at rock bottom to stop drinking.

Welcome back everyone to Season 8 of One For The Road, its so great to be back! I've got Kate Taylor joining me for the first episode back of this season.

After drinking for over 20 years, pretty much on a daily basis, Kate decided she needed to quit and recorded a drunken message to herself one night that would turn out to be instrumental in changing the course of her life.

07 Jun 2023Dr Rebecca Lewis00:44:33

Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by doctor and menopause specialist Rebecca Lewis, as we discuss the links between alcohol consumption and the exacerbation of the symptoms of menopause. Rebecca qualified from Guy’s Medical School and initially pursued a career in Anaesthetics gaining FRCA in 1996. She then changed specialty to General Practice (MRCGP 2000) having been interested in women’s health and gained DRCOG in 1998. During her time in General Practice, she became interested in menopause and by how dramatically it could affect individuals. She found this the most rewarding area of medicine to be involved in as once a woman is correctly diagnosed and treated with the right type and dose of HRT their life can be transformed and needless suffering stopped.  As a result, she is now passionate about improving education and knowledge about menopause, not only within medicine but in the workplace and society as a whole. Her aim is to make menopause a positive experience not hampered by symptoms so that women can be allowed to get on and enjoy healthy, active lives for many years ahead.

12 Jul 2023Louisa Evans00:57:54

Thanks for joining me for this week's episode of One For The Road. I am going to be taking a Summer break for the next couple of weeks but I will be back in August with more brilliant shows and guests.

On this week's show, I am joined by Louisa Evans. As a therapist and hypnotherapist, Louisa was no stranger to helping others quit unwanted habits but when it came to her own relationship with alcohol, she struggled. After spending more than a decade attempting moderation, she finally declared that enough was enough and embarked on a sober life, and that’s when the fun started. She found herself in a resetting loop with far too many "day ones" before making the necessary mindset shifts that changed everything. Even with all the tools at her disposal, she realized she was self-sabotaging. Fast forward to today, and she is delighted to have booted alcohol out of her life having created a sober identity that is far more appealing than her old drinking one. Louisa is now on a mission to spread the message far and wide that you don’t need to hit any sort of rock bottom to walk away from alcohol and that if you struggle at the start it doesn’t mean you won’t succeed eventually. It’s all about mindset. She’s now written a book which is also available as an audiobook, Becoming a Sober Rebel, on the subject of early sobriety and mindset where she talks about her experiences with going sober and shares tools that she uses in therapy when it comes to habit breaking.

Welcome back to another great episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by my good friend Brad Mcleod. Brad has been in recovery for 13 years after bottoming out for the last time. From his first taste of alcohol he was hooked with the relief it offered from personal insecurities. His relationship with drugs and alcohol was not terrible in the beginning but one day, things changed from having fun and enjoying a few to needing substances to live. He used to live and lived to use. He is now one of the biggest influencers in the sober community. He created sober motivation to help share stories about sobriety and the podcast has over 75 amazing stories of sobriety.

23 Aug 2023Sam Harrison01:01:18

Thanks for joining me for this week's episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by Sam Harrison. Sam is a retired professional rugby union player from Hinckley, Leicestershire, and is now 200 days sober. He played over 180 Games for Leicester Tigers and represented England at the Under 16, 18, and 20's level. Sam retired from playing professionally in 2019 to become a carpenter and moved with his young family to Byron Bay, Australia where he currently resides. What began as a sip of his mum's gin & tonic aged 5 and a strange fascination with alcohol, by age 16 Sam was binge drinking heavily every weekend without fail and more and more during the week. Despite living out a successful rugby career winning 2 premierships and winning Leicester Tigers Player of the Year in 2016 - Sam was fighting an internal battle with a worsening addiction to alcohol which with the arrival of 3 children - became completely out of control. Since Sam's sobriety, He now spends his time Surfing, playing rugby for his local team 'Casuarina" playing music in a band and producing music from home. Sam has also started helping friends and family who are potential problem drinkers and is very keen to help others with addiction.

11 Oct 2023Jimmy Weir01:11:40

Thanks for joining me for this week's episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by Jimmy Weir as he shares his story with us.

Alcohol was everything to him – his best friend, his saviour, the thing he turned to and would ultimately favour over everything and everyone. It all eventually came to a head February 2020 when he was living with his girlfriend and her two children. When he was sober, life was great and they were one amazingly weird little family. He had moments of sobriety but each time he slipped it seemed to get worse than the cycle that went before. He honestly wanted to help himself or let people help him but all the while, he could feel it slipping away from him and each time he picked up, it spiralled.

He checked into a rehab in Blackpool, his family helped him get there. He is very lucky to have their support in his life and he knows there are people out there who have none. In Blackpool he learned many tools to combat craving's and avoid picking up that first drink. He now lives on the Isle of Man close to his family and he has his own gardening business. He can finally say that he has turned a corner and has been touched by a miracle or higher power, but whatever it is he is proud to say that he is in recovery, that he is a recovering alcoholic. Saying that out loud is something he never thought he would say but he is proud to say it now.

Welcome back to One For The Road this weel ia ma joined by Harrison Ward, perhaps better known as Fell Foodie, an outdoor cook who loves to recreate restaurant style meals on minimal equipment (usually a campstove) in remote locations. He has a strong following across various social media platforms and has featured regularly in the media inc Countryfile Magazine, Men's Fitness, Metro etc. He is a brand advocate for Volvo Car UK, recently featured on the BBC in Dame Mary Berry's latest series ‘Love to Cook’, Channel 5 on ‘Winter on the Farm’ and has been an Ordnance Survey Champion since 2020. His life was very different just some short years ago. Struggling with a clinical depression first appearing in his adolescence, Harrison's life spiralled out of control. The end of a relationship and a personal breakdown led to a major life change. Harrison is now over 7 years sober, has thrown himself into fitness and hiking and merged his passion for food into his new routine. He takes modern practices back to their primal roots and shows what can be cooked in the mountains as well as sharing the importance of time outdoors for physical and mental wellbeing. He now regularly delivers talks at festivals, on podcasts, workplaces and as a keynote speaker about his personal battle with depression, suicidal thoughts and journey from an overweight, alcoholic, smoker to the fit, fell loving foodie he is today.

His debut cook book, ‘Cook Out’ has been published by Vertebrate Publishing in 2023.

Happy New Year and welcome back to One for the Road and a great start to 2024! To start off this new year I am joined by Susannah Tonybee-Clifton.

Susannah (@suzesober) lives in Hampshire with her husband and three young boys. She works as a freelancer, managing high-net-worth individuals, and is currently undertaking a psychodynamic therapy course having previously gained qualifications in areas such as CBT and Trauma. Suze was diagnosed with Complex PTSD in 2021 after facing a number of life-changing situations throughout her life, including losing her mother in her early twenties, followed shortly by her involvement in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. Her drinking picked up in her mid-thirties as she admits struggling to come to terms with these traumatic events. Suze is coming up to 2 years sober and is an inspirational and much-valued member of the sober community.

10 Jan 2024Scott Thomas01:00:20

Welcome back to another episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by Scott Thomas. Scott is a former professional party boy who spent the best part of a decade throwing parties for a living. Over the years Scott transitioned into a businessman after a successful appearance on Love Island in 2016. Despite running one of the highest-profile PR agencies The Social PR, Scott continued to struggle with his relationship with alcohol over the years. In 2020 Scott decided to go sober for 12 months and this was the most transformative year of his life. He’s now using his story to inspire others and has become an influencer for self development founding his very own wellness brand Food4thoughts.

17 Jan 2024Kim Bellas01:02:08

Kim’s journey began in 2013 when she decided to make the commitment to stop drinking in order to support her son Matthew who had been diagnosed with epilepsy. Sober is the New Cool was created as she soon realised the social pressures surrounding not only herself but her son too. Connection is the key to hope, health and happiness. She quickly realised that sending messages of hope and inspiration every day has the potential to brighten someone’s world. Kim feels blessed to have reinvented herself at the age of 52, and to be able to have filled her life with passion and something she can be proud of, and if we can remember that no act of kindness no matter how small, is ever wasted.

Only by giving can we receive more than we already have.
