28 Mar 202236. How to Grow Your Business on Instagram (Guest Episode with Natasha Samuel)00:56:44

Natasha Samuel is the host of The Shine Online Podcast and an Instagram strategist that helps small businesses… well, shine online. Through intensive strategy days, digital resources, and education, Natasha helps you build your brand on the ‘gram with a video strategy that is fulfilling and fun – without the overwhelm.

Natasha is a social media genius. She breaks down Instagram in such a refreshing, relatable way. Her whole approach is about finding the social media strategy that’s actually sustainable for you, no matter how busy your work or life can get. She also believes social media should reflect your personal values, and doesn’t advise compromising any of that for quick growth. We talk about overwhelm, content batching, nailing your Instagram bio, and her three-part follower journey (which is going to blow your mind)!

05 Sep 202259. How to Be a Great Stage Speaker (+ speaking tips from Guest Mike Pacchione!)01:20:08

At the ConvertKit Craft + Commerce conference—which was full of mind-blowing moments for me—I attended a workshop hosted by the mega-talented speaking coach Mike Pacchione and it was so helpful. Public speaking is such an important skill to learn, and it can be a huge advantage in your business if you do it well. He gave tips and tactics I’ve never heard before such as using your body language effectively, pausing between sentences to let the audience absorb what you said, and being strategic about where you stand on stage. We talk about why speaking well is important, what makes a speaker good or bad, and whether it’s possible for a bad speaker to become great. We also talked about the areas most speakers need to improve upon (and how they can do it), three tangible things to make your speaking more entertaining, and so much more.

In this episode, you’ll hear…

  • 08:58 - How Mike got into speaking
  • 17:43 - Why public speaking is so important
  • 24:29 - The qualities that make a good speaker—and a bad one
  • 34:38 - Three areas that most speakers need to improve upon
  • 41:18 - Tips for using your physical presence
  • 51:06 - How to get speaking opportunities
  • 01:00:20 - The minivan test
  • 01:04:36 - Mike answers your questions

When I first began my online business over five years ago, I couldn’t have imagined the shape it would take today. There were just so many unknowns. And while I can’t say I wish things had ended up any different, I do look back on some of the decisions I made early on knowing what I know now and wonder how I might approach things differently if I had to do it all over again.

Unless someone invents a time machine, I doubt I’ll ever get the chance to make use of these lessons – but for anyone out there in the early stages of their business, maybe I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made or grow your business even faster.

In this episode, you’ll hear…

  • Personal insights and lessons learned over the years in digital entrepreneurship
  • Viewing content creation on social media as a critical practice for developing a unique voice and style
  • The significance of choosing and focusing on fewer social media platforms
  • The misconception of a 'secret formula' for business success
  • Starting with the basics to avoid being overwhelmed

08 Aug 202255. Blowing the Lid on the Biggest Online Coaching Secrets00:40:33

I’ve seen a lot of nonsense in the online business industry—both during my time in it and well before then. I want to pull back the curtain a bit and show you some of the marketing tactics being used to get you to buy into courses and programs so that you can make better decisions. I also talk about the fear that we’re creating a coaching micro-economy—where we coach future coaches in order to make money to hire more coaches—and the importance of getting outside of your business bubble. This is a conversation many people in this space want to have but they don’t know how it will be received, so I hope it resonates with you.

27 May 2024215. How Much Should Business Insurance Cost for Coaching Businesses?00:16:44

One of the core startup costs for an online business is business insurance. In today’s episode, I teach you about business insurance and the general cost you can expect.

Business insurance is critical for financially protecting your business. Even if you just receive a nasty lawyer letter threatening to sue you for liability, your business insurance will step in with their own lawyer to act on your behalf.

I go over the key terms you need to know: Premiums, deductible, liability limits, exposure, policy limits, and exclusions. Then I explain how they all interact to create how much you pay and how much you are protected.

If you’re an online coaching business, you can expect liability insurance to cost somewhere between $400-$1,000. Trust me, it’s worth it.

In this episode, you’ll hear…

  • Why business insurance is important
  • Key business insurance terms explained
  • How much you can expect to pay for liability insurance as an online coach

Out of everything I’ve learned over the years of running a business, there’s one thing I wish I could go back and give myself the permission to do when I first started: Not turning everything I learn immediately into content for my business.

Once I gave myself this permission, not only did it impact my business success and my bottom line, my mental health improved. I didn’t realize how exhausting it was, but once I took a step back and slowed things down, it was clear to me that this isn’t a good approach to business. I’m going to share why I think this is such a bad idea, why it’s important to give yourself permission to do something different, and what you can do instead.

In this episode, you’ll hear…

  • 01:34 - The cycle of learning and teaching
  • 05:04 - Giving yourself permission to not teach everything you learn
  • 07:57 - Learning and growing in parallel
  • 10:52 - Sharing information with purpose

11 Sep 2023153. How to Be an Innovator (Taco Bell, James Corden & Beating the Competition)00:42:46

Today, we're diving into why innovation, not imitation, is the secret sauce to a lasting, competitive business. Many start their online ventures by mimicking others, assuming that the existing models are the gold standard. But entrepreneurship is about breaking out of that box. It's about pushing boundaries, introducing something new, or enhancing what's already out there. Your business shouldn't just plateau once you've launched something useful; it should constantly evolve and innovate. So let's explore this.

In this episode, you’ll hear…

  • Why most entrepreneurs start by imitating instead of innovating
  • How to spur innovation and find inspiration in your online business
  • Two case studies on how creators and entrepreneurs found success through innovation

26 Jul 20211. Community Over Competition is BS: Tips to Navigate Your Competition in a Healthier Way00:36:54

There can be so much pressure to engage with people offering the same professional services that you do online – especially when you’re starting out. I’m here to tell you that “community over competition” is BS. Don’t listen to it. That doesn’t mean you can’t be polite and friendly with other people doing what you do, but at the end of the day, they’re not your clients and they’re never going to be your clients. You only have a finite amount of time and energy to spend professionally, so why waste it on your competition? Taking a step back will be better for you in more ways than one. It can feel counterintuitive so here are my six tips for navigating online communities and social media and an explanation of why each one is the right thing to do.

I reached out for questions on this topic, so I also answer a few of those on this episode. I explain how avoiding consuming the work of your competitors will make you feel healthier in the long run and how it’ll lead to you doing better work and I also lay out how you can still be friends with your competition just because you’re not necessarily seeing their Instagram posts any more!

In this episode, you'll hear…

  • 03:16 - Engaging with your competition online
  • 09:45 - The pitfalls of being a follower
  • 14:43 - Dealing with analysis paralysis
  • 17:46 - Standing out from the competition
  • 21:50 - Outsourcing market research
  • 24:16 - Connecting with your ideal clients
  • 25:44 - What to do when your competition buys your product
  • 29:34 - Answering your questions

Writing a book isn’t just about writing a book. It brings up all kinds of business and personal dynamics, challenges, and opportunities for growth. Today fellow debut author, Jannese Torres, joins me to talk about why she chose to write a book as part of her personal finance business, and how she has made it work.

Jannese is an award-winning Latina Money Expert. She helps her clients and listeners build successful online businesses that allow them to pursue financial independence and freedom. Her podcast, Yo Quiero Dinero® is a platform to de-stigmatize money as a taboo topic in the Latinx & BIPOC communities and make personal finance fun, relevant and relatable. She decided to write a book in order to reach more people, and to cement herself as a thought leader in the field. Jannese talks about making time for writing (and everything else that goes along with creating a book), she had to implement some automated processes in her business and rely on her circle of support.

In today’s episode Jannese gives us great advice about investing in your business when it has hit a plateau, where to find free resources, and how to deal with online trolls.

Hey there! Today, I want to chat about the importance of defining our path and not just following the herd, especially in the digital landscape. Just like seeing someone else break a rule in school won’t hold up when the teacher catches you, the same applies to online business and legal issues.

  • The dangers of not legally forming your business and other shortcuts simply because others appear to be doing so.
  • How justifying your actions by pointing out others’ similar actions won’t save you from consequences—especially in the world of business.
  • The benefits of focusing solely on what's best for your business and brand, rather than getting lost in the noise of popular trends.
