24 Jan 2024Plastic Pollution to Precious Jewelry with Alice Birnbaum of ABSeas01:01:40

What if jewelry became a powerful medium for change? An ocean activist, traveler, and jewelry brand founder, Alice Birnbaum turns littered microplastics into one-of-a-kind treasures. Inspired by the plastic pollution she encountered traveling and doing beach cleanups, ‘AB Seas’ pieces build awareness around the plastic crisis and our ability to transform it with beautiful, creative solutions. We ask Alice about balancing entrepreneurship and beach cleanups with artistry and mental health. Her story is an example of what happens when one’s time and place aligns with their passions, skills, and life calling to make a positive difference in our world.

19 Dec 2023Toxic Truths in the Body Care Industry with Mike Malterre from Stream2Sea00:59:57

Our questions about the reef-damaging chemicals in common sunscreens lead to so much more. Our body care products are not only harming the ocean, bleaching coral and killing larvae, but they’re also hurting us. We talk with Mike Malterre, Executive Vice President of Stream2Sea, about the hormone-disrupting ingredients in so many of our daily products. Conversations like these remind us we’re not so separate from nature after all.

28 Jun 202429: Irene Pancrazi & Coral Reefs in the Maldives00:50:52

Irene is a marine biologist working in the Maldives to protect, preserve, and grow new corals. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone that loves corals as much as Irene– she explains their importance to the Maldives, the impact of tourism, and how Save the Beach Maldives is working with local communities to reduce plastic pollution. How does bleaching actually work? What even is it? I loved hearing how delicately and carefully they have to transfer the baby corals to new areas when new resorts or highways are being built.

12 Jun 202427: The Orca Man: New Species of Killer Whales, Whale Watching Guides, & Orca Lore00:51:50

If you’re a huge orca fan, this one is for you. How The Orca Man got his name (and fascination with the creatures). A land-based whale watching guide from Seattle to Vancouver with 28 excellent spots for getting outside and sighting whales this summer. Killer whales have a new species delineation, potentially. Begging for $8,000 on the street with a pillowcase in order to buy a captured killer whale, but actually winning it by winning an arm wrestle. These are just a little peak into the world of orca lore that The Orca Man shares with us in this episode.
