In today's episode, we speak with Chris Bagg and Molly Balfe, co-owners and coaches for Campfire Endurance. Tune in to learn more about creating and coaching a community of endurance athletes around the world, carb loading before races, #pancakedoping and #appledoping.

Chris Bagg has been an actor, cook, teacher, freelance writer, professional triathlete, and coach. He runs Campfire Endurance Coaching with his infinitely patient business partner, aiming to make endurance athletes everywhere faster and happier. He lives in Portland, Oregon, but he grew up in Massachusetts and New York (he's a Red Sox fan, though). He played soccer in college and then taught high school English for a while before turning to the thing he discovered he loves to do: being a P.E. teacher for adults.

Molly Balfe has been an actor, restaurant hostess, epidemiologist, and has worked in film and television sales and marketing. She also lives in Portland, Oregon, where it rains all the time, she thinks. She grew up swimming, and her coach once described her career as "whimsical." She now coaches full-time and spends her free time on her bicycle.

About Savilia Blunk:
Growing up in the small town of Inverness, California, I learned the importance of understanding where you come from, your surroundings, and how you have the power to change your environment for the better. I come from multiple generations of artists, with the creative hand shaping my early life. These experiences have influenced how I express my own strengths and weaknesses as a female athlete, and how I relate to my environment and connect to those around me. This has all fueled what is now my career in professional cycling. Unfolding in my high school years with NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association), my passion as a cross country mountain bike racer was launched into a professional career as an athlete. During the three years of my professional career, I have earned 6 National titles, 2 U23 World Cup podiums, and multiple top 15 World Cup finishes. I now race professionally for Orange Seal Off-Road Team. However, I believe I have more to offer than being a bike racer on a bike, and I am here to share my stories, advice, and help inspire and motivate the next generation.

08 Nov 2022Episode 41 with Hillary Allen: Fueling for Skyrunning and Ultra Trail Running and Nutrition for Injury00:48:09

Send us a text

In today's episode, we speak with Hillary Allen about her love for sky running and trail running, and how she fuels for these challenging courses. We'll also dive into how her nutrition changed after her life-threatening injury.

About Hillary Allen:
My career as an endurance athlete has not been straightforward. Through injury, setbacks and being told I would never run again, I’ve had to re-think what I consider impossible, as I continued to push myself, believing in my best athletic days ahead.

Early in my career, I earned the nickname “Hillygoat” for my love of the uphill and my ability to run fast on steep, technical mountain terrain – a style of running known as Skyrunning. I won the US SkyRunner Series in 2014 in my debut season and since then, I have raced all over the world, racking up wins and course records, establishing myself as one of the best mountain ultra runners in the world.

In 2017 I had a life threatening accident, where I fell 150 feet off of a ridge-line during a Skyrace in Tromsø, Norway. I broke a total of 14 bones and I was told I would never run again – let alone compete at the elite level. After several years of rehab and recovery, I made a full recovery and returned to elite level racing, running some of my longest and most challenging races post-accident.

I maintain the belief that ‘your best athletic days are ahead of you,’ if you’re willing to work hard for what you love and never give up on yourself.

I also am a scientist, I have a masters degree in neuroscience and physiology and structural biology, I’m a running coach, and a gravel cyclist.

  • Her go-to race day recipes

  • Her experience with body image and "lighter is faster"
  • Her current training and nutrition strategies
  • Her travel nutrition tips

About Maddy:
I am a Canadian Olympian, pro 400/4x400m sprinter, motivational speaker, mentor, and advocate for athlete mental health.

My road to Tokyo and running full-time was filled with uncertainty as I dealt with my dad’s passing from cancer months after missing the 2016 Rio Olympic Team, coming back from foot surgery 12 months out from Tokyo 2020, and then the global pandemic, Olympic postponement, and its challenges.

Despite the odds, I helped lead our Women’s 4x400m relay team to a 4th place finish at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, just narrowly missing the podium and Canadian Record by six-tenths of a second.

Far more important than the accomplishment of becoming an Olympian is how I approached the process... with a gritty and “day by day” attitude.

Send us a text

In today's episode, we speak with Renee Kiley about...

  • Her transformation from smoking a pack of cigarettes a day to competing as a pro triathlete
  • Her nutrition pre-race, race fueling strategy, and post-race recovery

About Renee:
In January 2014, I was 104kg (230lbs), smoking a packet of cigarettes a day and the owner of multiple successful small businesses. I was obsessed with work, unhealthy, unhappy, and hadn’t exercised for over 15 years.

In March 2014, I competed in my first triathlon. Prior to this I had not ridden a bike or swam since primary school and I had never run more than a few kilometers without stopping my entire life. During 2014 I lost 44kgs (97lbs) and completely turned my life around.

I have had incredible progression and one that is very unique in the world of professional sport. I finished 252nd in that first sprint distance triathlon. I went on to do my first Ironman in 2015 where I won my age group. As an amateur athlete between 2014 and 2017 I was a regular winner and podium finisher in my category across all distances from Sprint to Ironman.

In just my first two years in the sport I had already competed at the Ironman World Championships (Kona) twice.

In late 2017 I turned professional. In 2020 I achieved my first Ironman podium result as a pro, finishing 3rd at the Ironman Asia-Pacific Championships in Cairns. I finished 2nd at Ironman Hamburg in 2021 (just 2 minutes behind the winner), qualified and competed at both ironman World Championships in 2022 and rarely finish out of the Top 5 in any race locally or internationally.

I am doing what most people who work in high performance say should not be possible. Regularly beating women who have competed at Olympic level or who have been lifetime athletes.

I am committing everything to becoming one of the best female Iron distance athletes in the world. And along the way, of huge importance to me is to use my profile and story to inspire as many people as possible of how they can completely transform their life through sport.

  • The lessons she learned as she upped her mileage
  • Building confidence through running & chasing new goals
  • Training her gut & finding calorie sources that work for before, during and post-race
  • The mental preparation that goes into running 200 miles
  • The Rising Hearts Foundation and elevating indigenous voices

About Callie:
She began running in 2013 as a way to lose weight after realizing she could barely walk a mile to meet a friend for brunch in Chicago. It was a slow-go getting started—she picked up a stress fracture, had to learn the real value of food and how to eat better vs eating out every meal. She struggled simply running around the block—but she kept at it and eventually, one day, ran 13.1 miles around her neighborhood and decided she wanted to try a marathon. The 2016 BOA Chicago Marathon was her first race (ever) and she finished! It was around this time too that she reached a total of 200 pounds lost.

After that, she tackled her first 50 miler. Then, her first 100 miler and in 2022 her first 200+ mile finish at the Moab 240.

It wasn't until she moved to Arizona that she truly started trail running, and now she's just two weeks away from the Western States Endurance Run, oldest 100-mile trail ultra in the country, which includes 17k of vert and 23k of descent. Needless to say, there's been a lot of learning this training cycle — not just with performance on trail but also how to fuel properly for a hot, hot, hot mountainous race.  It'll be a challenge, but like Callie likes to say, "We're runners and easy just ain't our thing."

Sam Laidlow (born December 23, 1998 in Oakley, Bedfordshire.) is a French professional triathlete. Runner-up in the Ironman World Championship last October in Hawaii, Sam Laidlow made history with the best French performance.

  • Making FKT attempts
  • How he got into mountain biking & gravel riding
  • How he fuels for training, racing and in the off-season

Born and raised outside Austin, Tex., Payson McElveen relocated to Durango, CO in 2012 to pursue Exercise Science at collegiate cycling powerhouse Fort Lewis College as well as his dream of becoming a professional mountain biker. Following graduation in 2016, his career began to take off, but not necessarily in the manner he'd expected. Rather than pursue the traditional route of XC that involves World Cup racing and Olympic aspirations, he gravitated towards longer events after a career-altering experience at the 6-day Mongolia Bike Challenge. A year later, he won his first professional national title at the 2017 Marathon Mountain Bike Championships, and a second title in 2018, successes that helped land dream sponsor Red Bull. This further spurred a commitment to longer events which were exploding in popularity at the time. Now splitting his time between off-road endurance disciplines and a focus on the Lifetime Grand Prix, Payson has continued to enjoy success at the biggest gravel events in the world, including three wins at The Mid-South, and podium finishes at the Leadville 100, Unbound 200, SBT GRVL and more. While his athletic achievements are notable, Payson strives to have a multi-faceted impact on the sport. Through his popular “The Adventure Stache” podcast, films, and innovative physical challenges such as FKTs and a first single push crossing of Iceland, he hopes to inspire riders to think about the sport in new ways. While racing remains his first and greatest love on the bike, he hopes to have an impact that extends far beyond the finish line.

21 Dec 2023Holiday Replay: Dr. Stacy Sims on keto, fasting, and fueling for women in sport01:00:25

Send us a text

As the holidays approach, we're taking a short break from recording, but we're bringing back our top 3 episodes of 2023, that we think deserve another listen. One of our most downloaded  this year was with Dr. Stacy Sims. We tackled a ton of super important topics that we hear a lot about - like fasting, keto diets, perimenopause /menopause, women's health issues, training and more - according to what the research says. There's so much to unpack here and we found it totally fascinating!

Dr. Stacy Sims is a forward-thinking international exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist who is striving to revolutionize exercise nutrition and performance for women. Along with her own business, she is currently the Senior Research Associate with SPRINZ- AUT University, supervising PhD students and writing academic papers. She is on the advisory board of several cutting edge companies, including Tonal Strength Institute, WILD.AI, and EXOS. Previously, she has directed research programs at Stanford and the University of Waikato, focusing on female athlete health and performance.

During her tenure at Stanford, she had the opportunity to translate earlier research into consumer products to explain sex differences in training and nutrition across the lifespan. She has been featured on a now-famous TEDx Talk, and her contributions to the international research environment and the sports nutrition industry has established a new niche in sports nutrition. She’s been named as a top visionary in several publications, including DMSE Sports, Outside Magazine and Triathlete Magazine and has written more than 70 peer reviewed papers, several books and is a regularly featured speaker at professional and academic conferences, including those by the USOC and USA Cycling.

28 Dec 2023Holiday Replay: Alexey Vermuelen on how he's learned from nutrition mistakes for better performance00:59:48

Send us a text

We hope everyone is having a happy and healthy holiday season. While we're on holiday break, we're bringing back a few of our top episodes of 2023, and this episode with pro cyclist Alexey Vermuelen is one of our favorites. We talked all about his nutrition experience and evolution, mistakes he learns from - so you don't have to - and training with the fastest cycling dog, Sir Willie the Weiner. Enjoy this episode!

Alexey Vermeulen is an American cyclist who grew up racing on the road after getting into the sport through kids triathlon and inspiration from his grandfather (Opa). After spending two years in the World Tour with Jumbo Visma, Alexey pivoted towards the dirt (gravel & MTB) believing that the sponsorship model in professional cycling was flawed and that he could make a bigger impact where the barrier for entry was lower. Vermeulen has become famous on the circuit for training with Sir Willie the Weiner, a long-haired miniature dachshund that he carries in a backpack while riding. Recent results include winning BWR California, and Iceman Cometh in 2022.

  • The logistics of running across the United States
  • Raising money for Team Red, White and Blue
  • Fueling for 3,000 miles in 52 days (and change)

In 2018 Naval Officer Paul Johnson went on his first deployment overseas to Spain. While it led to amazing opportunities, it was a difficult tour that weighed heavily on him and his fellow Sailors. His next duty station took him to San Diego in 2021, and once removed from the constant stressful environment of his first deployment, he began noticing the issues he had been dealing with, like persistent sleep issues, anxiety, and depression. He had been using alcohol as a coping mechanism, but his narrative began shifting in 2022, when a Marine friend asked Paul to train and run the Marine Corps Marathon. He trained for months, and they both ended up finishing the marathon in under 3 hours, and receiving their Boston Qualifier. During this time, he realized how much running helped him cope with the anxiety/depression symptoms he was experiencing. In January 2023, with a move to the East Coast, he started a run streak. This quickly evolved into entering the ultra scene, running 100 mile races by April 2023. Running was his therapy, and he found release and escape in a positive way. This year (2024), he tackled the TransCon, running 3,000 miles from California to New York to raise awareness & funds for mental health issues facing veterans through Team Red White and Blue, which exists to enrich the lives of veterans by providing opportunities to build a healthier lifestyle.

In this week's episode we talk to triathlon coach, Chris Bagg, about:

  • How to effectively train for Ironman (full and 70.3)
  • What you should be doing to qualify for Ironman World Champs

Chris Bagg has been an athlete his whole life, ever since he dangled from the outside of an escalator in the Boston Museum of Science at age five. Chris played soccer through college, standing in one place as a goalkeeper, and then, after moving to Washington D.C., he discovered he had an aptitude for endurance, rather than ball sports. Since then he’s been a runner, a triathlete, a cyclist, and a cross-country skier, all at a high level. He raced professionally and semi-professionally as a triathlete and cyclist for 15 years, respectively, posting career results of 4th at Ironman Canada in 2011, 2nd at Challenge Penticton in 2014, 13th (and top American) at the great Challenge Roth in 2017, 12th at the ITU Long Distance World Championships in 2017, and 22nd at Unbound Gravel in 2019. He started coaching endurance sports in 2009, but with his background as a teacher, he’s been a coach for most of his life. He happily describes his job now as “a gym teacher for adults.”

As the founder of Campfire Endurance Coaching, Chris aims to provide all athletes, regardless of level or genetic gift, with the kind of training that professional athletes receive: consistent and thoughtful communication, programs tailored to their goals and lives, and a wide perspective that encompasses the athlete’s entire career. He believes that endurance sport, through its unique flavor of adversity, can make athletes faster, happier, and healthier, and he wants that for all of you.
