03 May 2023#87 Understanding How Hormones Impact Weight Loss00:28:24

In this episode, Nicole interviews Amanda Harr, one of the lead dietitians at HSN, Amanda shares her knowledge and passion about hormones and how they affect weight loss. They cover various hormones, including thyroid, cortisol, serotonin, insulin, and sex hormones. They also touch on the role of sleep and stress management in maintaining an adequate metabolism.

Overall, this episode aims to empower women to take control of their health by understanding their hormones and how they can affect their weight loss goals. Stay tuned for an insightful and informative discussion!

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Understanding the different parts of the thyroid feedback loop, including TSH, T4, and T3, is important to maintain healthy hormone levels. Stress, nutrient deficiencies, infections, and extreme diets can impact hormone levels.
  • Spending time outdoors, taking walks, practicing yoga, getting enough sleep, and reducing screen time are ways to improve mental and physical health.
  • Sleep affects leptin and ghrelin levels, which are important for regulating appetite and satisfaction. Poor lifestyle choices like lack of exercise, poor sleep, and excessive screen time can negatively affect children's health.
  • Having margin in one's schedule and reducing screen time before bed improves the secretion of melatonin, which is essential for better sleep, lower cortisol levels, better leptin and ghrelin levels, and adequate melatonin for egg quality, particularly for those who want to get pregnant.
  • Taking melatonin supplements does not necessarily help one stay asleep. A de-stressing wind-down process before bed, including box breathing, can help one sleep better.
  • Sex hormones relate to women's menstrual cycles.

03 Jan 2021#6: Healthy Steps Nutrition Framework: Exercise00:24:15

Today, Nicole Aucoin and Ashley Osterman discuss the fifth pillar of the Healthy Steps Nutrition Framework: Exercise.

I recently conducted a poll, what is easier to get started -- a nutrition or fitness routine? Over 90% said that exercise was easier.

If you think about it, this week is historically the busiest week for gyms worldwide. People are motivated to finally see the results they are looking to join a gym.

Here's the problem, they don't have the coaching, and they don't have the accountability to stick with it. That's the reason why over 80% of people have ditched their resolutions and stopped going to gyms by the second week in February.

In this episode, Ashley and Nicole discuss:
- The importance of exercise
- The importance of finding something you like
- How to build exercise into your routine

Our mission is to empower 4k people in January to ditch the all or nothing mentality and take control of their health one step by listening to this podcast.

17 Feb 2021#14: 3 Reasons Your Diet Failed You00:22:11

Have you failed a diet before? We have all been there!

This week, Ashley Osterman and I discuss the three main reasons why diets don't work.

We are surrounded by diet food, diet information, and the latest diet trends. It's impossible to go to the grocery store and not see something about a FAD diet.
Research shows the average American will try FOUR FAD diets per year. I think we all know the story -- you try it, and it stops just as quick as it started. Studies show 65% of people will regain all the weight back and more.

It's not your fault. We have to flip the switch on diet culture and instead of "dieting," we must start changing the foundational habits that create our lifestyle.

26 Apr 2023#85 - Understanding Blood Sugar Management & Diabetes (Part 1)00:33:00

Growing up, I never expected that my passion for helping others would lead me to become an expert on understanding blood sugar management and diabetes - a journey of discovery that began with my mother's unexpected diagnosis of breast cancer. Little did I know that this experience would ultimately shape my mission to educate others on the importance of holistic health and empower them to take control of their destiny.

In this episode, I delved into the topic of blood sugar management and diabetes, exploring the importance of a holistic approach to maintaining balanced blood sugar levels. I shared my personal story about my mother's battle with cancer, which sparked my passion for helping people prevent and reverse chronic diseases. With 50% of the US population having diabetes or prediabetes, it's essential to understand the different types and how lifestyle changes can make a difference. I emphasized the importance of consuming whole foods, reducing processed carbohydrates and sugar, getting quality sleep, and incorporating daily exercise. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to take control of their health and prevent chronic disease through sustainable lifestyle changes.

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • Uncover the secrets behind managing diabetes holistically through the trifecta of nutrition, sleep, and exercise.

  • Harness the power of whole foods and balanced meals in effectively managing blood sugar levels.

  • Delve into the often overlooked connection between sleep quality and blood sugar control.

  • Embrace transformative lifestyle choices that aid in preventing chronic diseases and improving overall wellness.

  • Discover the potential of continuous glucose monitoring programs in delivering personalized nutritional guidance.

08 Feb 2023#83 - 10 Things I Wish I knew About Nutrition As A Teen Athlete00:23:56

Today is going to be really fun. This podcast is actually geared for parents first but then meant to be shared with your teen. 10 things I wish I knew about nutrition as a teen athlete.

Most teenagers, especially girls, want to look a certain way. We don't realize the food that we eat and how it fuels our body and how it's truly how we are going to build muscle, get stronger, get faster, and recover from strenuous workouts, especially when we are teen athletes. I remember growing up doing gymnastics and then cheerleading and my nutrition while I ate healthy foods.

I definitely didn't eat. Well, in today's podcast, I'm hoping that you get an outsider's perspective for your children, for your teens, so that they understand how the food they eat fuels their body, fuels their brain, and is going to help them get stronger and healthier. The goal of nutrition and healthy eating at a younger age isn't meant to be a fight.

We want to empower our kids to eat healthily and want to eat healthily. I know it sounds crazy, but it is definitely possible. I hope you enjoy this episode and please share it with your teen. I know it will impact them and help them think twice about their food decision so that they can perform better in school and sports.

10 things I wish I knew about nutrition as a teen athlete.

  1. Food is fuel - it gives you energy.
  2. You need to try something 12-15 times before you know if you really like it or not
  3. Food can be the most excellent medicine or the slowest poison
  4. How do you prepare things matters? Try roasting and get in the kitchen! One day you will be on your own and you will need to know how to cook.
  5. What you eat impacts your mood
  6. What you eat impacts your quality of sleep
  7. Severe calorie deprivation to lose weight (fasting or eating minimally) will slow down your metabolism and works against you
  8. Salads aren’t always the best option!
  9. If your parents make you eat healthily, it’s because they love you!
  10. The healthy habits you create today will impact you 20, 30, and 50 years from now

28 Apr 2023#86 - Understanding Blood Sugar Management & Continuous Glucose Monitoring (Part 2) with Brittany Wharton00:37:19

In this episode, Brittany and Nicole continue their discussion on Blood Sugar Management and Diabetes Education. They talk about the benefits of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM), which is a tiny device that can be inserted into the body to show real-time glucose readings. CGM provides quick feedback without causing much pain, and it can help diabetic patients understand what's going on inside their bodies and why their blood sugar levels are spiking.

They also emphasize the importance of taking control of your health and using tools like CGM to make informed decisions. By understanding your body's response to food and making small lifestyle changes, you can significantly improve your health outcomes and prevent chronic disease.

Here are some key points they discuss:

  • CGM is a tiny device that provides real-time glucose readings without causing much pain.
  • The device can help diabetic patients understand why their blood sugar levels are spiking and make informed decisions about their health.
  • CGM is a game-changer in diabetes management because it allows individuals to learn about their bodies and prevent health issues down the road.
  • Factors that can influence blood sugar levels include food, medication, illness, and stress.
  • Understanding how your body responds to food is crucial for regulating blood sugar levels, and the hosts offer simple tricks to help.
  • CGM can also benefit non-diabetics by revealing the impact of certain foods and drinks on blood sugar levels.
  • Making small changes to diet and exercise can significantly improve health outcomes and prevent chronic disease.
