15 Feb 2022 | Representation Matters! How Representation Can Improve Your Child's Mental Health | 00:32:49
Welcome back to part 3 of this 4-part Black History Month Series! Five years ago, 3-year old Sophia from South Carolina went viral when she visited a Target with her mother and chose a doll made in the image of her favorite cartoon character -Doc McStuffins. The cashier questioned why Sophia, a 3-year old white child, would choose a black doll. Sophia's response was heard worldwide as she explained how she and Doc McStuffins were the same - including they were both doctors and both pretty. The moral of the story is that representation and exposure matter for all children. While Sophia's story makes my heart sing as a doctor, I want us to do more to ensure that children of all genders and races see themselves represented in media and academics. In today's episode, I am focusing on why representation matters for black children and the ways that adults and the community at large can advocate for representation.

22 Feb 2022 | Breaking the Stigma! Let’s talk about the mental health of Black Children and Adolescents | 00:40:22
Welcome to the final episode of our Black History 2022 wellness series. When I heard the news concerning the suicide of Cheslie Kryst, attorney, television correspondent, and former Miss USA, I was left speechless like many of you. Suicide rates amongst people of color look are skyrocketing. And for every story that makes national headlines, ten more don't. I understand that many of my listeners are parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles dealing with children, adolescents, and young adults living with mental health concerns. In this final episode, I want to discuss the stigma surrounding mental health in the black community. Together, we will examine the cultural attitudes that keep the stigma in place and have an honest conversation about creating real change starting in our own families and the children around us.

The complexities of foreign policy and long-standing feuds between nations are too intricate for adults to understand let alone children. 22 Mar 2022 | Screen Time and Your Child's Mental Health | 00:39:57
Technology, namely portable devices, has impacted every industry imaginable while giving us unprecedented access to information. Through these advancements, our children have learned online during a pandemic, connected to relatives in different parts of the world, and gained knowledge at a speed that we could have only imagined 20 years ago. Despite the positive impact that portable computers, tablets, and smartphones have provided, we cannot ignore the negative impact. As children become more connected to devices, parents and caregivers often ask me how these devices and the media that children consume on them impact their mental health. In this episode, we discuss screen time through the lens of mental health for children. We'll cover screen time recommendations based on The American Psychological Association's research for different age groups and strategies to help parents and caregivers monitor and control access to what their children are consuming.

Likes, comments, subscribers - Oh my! Social media plays a significant role in peer-to-peer interaction for today's children- if you're 35 years old or older, you grew up differently. You built friendships through face-to-face interactions at prescribed times (school, recreational activities, and playing outside until the street lights came on;) We often talk about the harmful impacts of social media. Yet, we rarely have conversations that balance social media's positive and negative components until today! In today's episode, I discuss the pros and cons of social media while sharing strategies that families can use to set boundaries, ensure safety, and, most importantly, tend to the mental health needs of their children. Don’t be afraid to broach the topic of therapy/mental health treatment with your child. She also explores the ways in which schools, school leaders, and educational policies are positioned to support teachers' critical work for social justice and inclusion. In this episode, we talk about creating a working relationship with your child’s teacher. Dr. Jones shared her tips on speaking to your child’s teacher about grades and other conflicts. We discuss the importance of assessing your child’s strengths in the classroom.
