15 Feb 2022Representation Matters! How Representation Can Improve Your Child's Mental Health00:32:49

Welcome back to part 3 of this 4-part Black History Month Series!

Five years ago, 3-year old Sophia from South Carolina went viral when she visited a Target with her mother and chose a doll made in the image of her favorite cartoon character -Doc McStuffins.

The cashier questioned why Sophia, a 3-year old white child, would choose a black doll. Sophia's response was heard worldwide as she explained how she and Doc McStuffins were the same - including they were both doctors and both pretty.

The moral of the story is that representation and exposure matter for all children. While Sophia's story makes my heart sing as a doctor, I want us to do more to ensure that children of all genders and races see themselves represented in media and academics. In today's episode, I am focusing on why representation matters for black children and the ways that adults and the community at large can advocate for representation.

  • [00:02:15] Listen as I recap our 4- Part Black History Series and updates about future episodes
  • [00:06:46] The article of the week: The 1940's Doll Test The Study of The Psychological Effects of Segregation and how it relates to representation.
  • [00:10:06] What is representation - and how adults can use it to impact their child(rens) mental health positively.
  • [00:11:49] Research-based information on how representation impacts children's mental health -such as identity development and more.
  • [00:18:07] Discovering how diversity and exposure encourages empathy and compassion for other races and cultures
  • [00:20:47] What can we do to make sure that there's diversity in a child or adolescence? Mindful strategies for parents and caregivers
  • [00:30:31] Helping to instill pride and a positive self-image.

I understand that many of my listeners are parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles dealing with children, adolescents, and young adults living with mental health concerns.

In this final episode, I want to discuss the stigma surrounding mental health in the black community. Together, we will examine the cultural attitudes that keep the stigma in place and have an honest conversation about creating real change starting in our own families and the children around us.

  • [00:10:36]What is Mental Health Stigma, and how does it show up in the black community?

The complexities of foreign policy and long-standing feuds between nations are too intricate for adults to understand let alone children. Therefore, I understand why many adults shy away from having conversations about war and conflict.

22 Mar 2022Screen Time and Your Child's Mental Health00:39:57

Technology, namely portable devices, has impacted every industry imaginable while giving us unprecedented access to information. Through these advancements, our children have learned online during a pandemic, connected to relatives in different parts of the world, and gained knowledge at a speed that we could have only imagined 20 years ago.

29 Mar 2022Social Media and Your Child's Mental Health00:28:19

Likes, comments, subscribers - Oh my!

Social media plays a significant role in peer-to-peer interaction for today's children- if you're 35 years old or older, you grew up differently. You built friendships through face-to-face interactions at prescribed times (school, recreational activities, and playing outside until the street lights came on;)

We often talk about the harmful impacts of social media. Yet, we rarely have conversations that balance social media's positive and negative components until today!

In today's episode, I discuss the pros and cons of social media while sharing strategies that families can use to set boundaries, ensure safety, and, most importantly, tend to the mental health needs of their children.

Welcome to another episode of Notes From A Child Psychologist.

05 Apr 2022How to Know If your Child Needs Therapy00:29:14

Don’t be afraid to broach the topic of therapy/mental health treatment with your child.

Parents are often surprised by how willing their children are to speak with someone about what is going on in their lives. Many parents make the assumption that mental health may mean that their child will be stigmatized or that they may automatically require medication or even a hospital stay. What we know is that therapy can be a great place for your children and adolescents to learn new coping strategies, learn problem solving skills, and can even be helpful in improving your relationship with your child.

Today we are going to jump into a few ways that you will know your child needs therapy and what that looks like for them.

•[00:11:00] A lot of therapy for adolescents looks like playing or drawing, or even sketching because these are forms of communication for children.

•[00:13:44] Position yourself in such a way that your adolescent knows that therapy is a safe space for them and do not expect for the therapist to reveal everything that was discussed during the session.

•[00:16:50] Common signs to know that your child needs therapy.

•[00:18:40] Ask yourself, is this causing significant impairment in my life and is this changing my family dynamic.

08 Feb 2023Black History Month 2023: Developmentally Appropriate Conversations about Race, Racism, and Social Justice00:29:40

Having conversations around race, racism, and social justice is very often hard for parents and caregivers. Yet, parents and caregivers are the most equipped to create spaces for healthy dialogue—today, children have access to news, commentary, and social media but lack the context that history provides.

This month I am celebrating Black History Month, in my annual Black History Month Series. We're kicking this series off with today's episode titled:  Developmentally Appropriate Conversations about Race, Racism, and Social Justice.

In this episode,  I am sharing a framework that parents and caregivers can use to begin discussing race, racism, and social justice with children and adolescents, in  a developmentally appropriate way!

We cover the following:

  • How adults prepare mentally and emotionally for these difficult conversations.
  • The key to having developmentally appropriate conversations with your children about race,  racism, and social justice.

16 Feb 2023Black History Month 2023- “Look, She looks like me!” Why Representation is KEY!00:27:56

This week we are in part 2 of the 2023 Black History Month Series!

On this week's episode of the podcast, I talk about the importance of representation.

There is a plethora of research that suggests that it is extremely important for children to be exposed to positive images of people who looked like them! Representation is when children and adolescents see people who look and/or have similar experiences to them in books, media, politics, movies, and the many other things they consume on a daily basis.

Join me in this episode so we can have a conversation about how you can make sure there is representation in your child's life.

In today’s world, there is no escaping the barrage of likes, comments, and follow requests. Our children are growing up in a world where social media is becoming increasingly accessible to younger audiences by the day. From privacy, to safety, to screen time, it seems like there are countless topics we must help our children navigate.

However, fear not! Social media is not without its benefits! Engaging online can allow your children a creative outlet, and ample opportunities for social connection and interaction.

Being a double-edged sword, it is vital that parents and caregivers give social media the proper educational attention to ensure that our children are reaping the benefits, while minimizing the possible drawbacks.

In this episode of the Summer Series, I am going to walk you through tangible ways to monitor and tailor your child’s time online to ensure the security of their mental health, and their safety.

29 Aug 2023Helping Your Child Develop Their Voice!00:38:00

In an increasingly complicated world,  caregivers have to equip their children with the tools to advocate for themselves, their needs, and their safety. Assertiveness is not innate to children. It is a muscle that has to be exercised. A child’s ability to use their voice will translate to success in the classroom, in social circles, in extracurricular activities, and will foster confidence and competence.

In today’s episode,  we discuss why developing your child’s voice is so important, and how this will benefit every aspect of your child’s life. I will provide you with the actions you as a caregiver can take to strike the right balance between a well-mannered child and an assertive, self-advocating child.

Give your child the gift of their own voice, just in time for back to school!

01 Feb 2022Black History Month 2022: How Knowing Their History Can Improve Your Child's Mental Health00:33:10

Having conversations around race and mental health is hard for parents and caregivers. Yet, parents and caregivers are the most equipped to create spaces for healthy dialogue—today, children have access to news, commentary, and social media but lack the context that history provides. In addition to understanding the world we live in, exposing children to Black History is also an opportunity to celebrate and promote a positive self-image.

This month I am celebrating Black History Month with my first series. For February, we will discuss Black History and Mental Health. We're kicking this series off with today's episode titled: Why Knowing Their History Can Improve Your Child's Mental Health. In this episode, I discuss three ways that understanding mental health can improve your child's mental health.

Future episodes in this series include:

  1. How to talk to your children about race and racism.
  2. Why representation is crucial for your child's mental health
  3. The importance of breaking the stigma around mental health for Black Children and Adolescents.
  • [00:05:05] The note of the week, 2022's Black History Month Theme.
  • [00:09:09] The significance of this year's theme and how we use it to support children's mental health in the wake of recent events.
  • [00:11:15] Our adolescent children benefit significantly from understanding their history as this is a critical time in Identity Development. Here I discuss ways parents and caregivers can use history to help their children process the world around them.
  • [00:14:30] Research supports that children with a healthy sense of identity take pride in their culture. Learn how to use Black History and your family history to improve self-esteem and promote a positive self-image.
  • [00:15:48] The stress of racial uprisings, protests, and disturbing videos are emotionally triggering. As adults, we have the context to help us process our emotions through understanding history. Unfortunately, our children don't. Here I discuss how discussions about history can support your child's mental health and foster understanding and empathy.
  • [00:17:59] Resources for parents and caregivers that foster communication
  • [00:21:11] Discussions about history improve family connection and create moments for family connection. Join me as I share tips for creating memories through historical events.
  • [00:29:00] Why Black History Month and an understanding of race and racism is a conversation for everyone.

Don't forget to Listen, Share, Comment, and Rate. These small actions support this podcast and raise awareness about Childhood Mental Health.
