01 Jul 2024 | Meet Meagan Guité, Ruby Star Society Project Coordinator! - Ep. 115 | 01:48:59
Meagan Guité is a Project Coordinator for Ruby Star Society who loves color, anything vintage and pets. Meagan's mom, Sarah, taught her how to quilt over 15 years ago when she opened a quilt shop. Meagan worked for her mom, and learned to quilt so she could answer questions for customers. Meagan's joy of making things with fabric comes from Sarah, and is something Meagan cherishes even more now. After Sarah passed away in 2021, Meagan found a new energy to create and sew. She quilted through the pain of losing her mother as a way to keep her close. Since then, Meagan quit her corporate job, and in a leap-of-faith moment, she applied for the job posted by Ruby Star Society looking for a project coordinator/social media/marketing expert. She got the job (that she splits with Audrey Savage) and now gets to live in the creative space of quilting and sewing. As the Project Coordinator, Meagan organizes the projects that will be mocked up in new fabric lines being released. She also helps write and create project plans and patterns. The new 10 Years of Magic pattern is one of Meagan's designs. Meagan is clearly an asset to Ruby Star Society and the world of quilting. Her ideas and excitement for design are so inspiring! 10 Apr 2023 | The Badass Quilters Society - Ep. 59 | 01:30:37
Today on the show Amanda talks with Maddie Kertay. She is an award-winning quilter and the founder and CEO of the BadAss Quilters Society. Maddie believes that dedicated community is far more important than a perfect quarter-inch seam or specific quilting style. A safe, supportive, and welcoming community for politically liberal quilters have been Maddie Kertay’s goal for 10 years and counting. BadAss Quilters Society specifically serves and supports politically liberal quilters with community, content, and commentary on the state of today’s quilting culture. Maddie is a long-time community builder having built her state’s first wholly inclusive and LGBTQIA-affirming homeschooling group to support her family and other progressive families like it when there was no place for her family to gather with others of a like mind at the time. Maddie is the mother to 6 children ranging in ages from 33-22 and grandmother to one, Maddie makes her home in Chattanooga TN in an old house she is restoring with her husband and way too many animals, including a rotating cast on neonatal kittens for which she is a professional foster and advocate for the most medically fragile of them year-round. Maddie is a fierce advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community of which she is a part. When not caring for kittens, slinging a hammer, or out in her garden you can find her writing on her blog to further the evolution of the larger quilting community to become a more welcoming and diverse place. Somewhere in there, she sneaks in time for her passion for art quilting and on occasion sewing some clothing. Find Maddie (and other Badass Quilters) here:

Her latest pattern, Ex, came about as a forgotten project that would have been a gift for her son's swim teacher/life guard. 19 Feb 2024 | Meet Amber Elliot of Alderwood Studio! - Ep. 96 | 01:31:07
Amber Elliot is the artist/pattern designer/quilter/educator behind Alderwood Studio. She has been sewing all her life, and has always loved bringing various fabrics together to give them new life. As a child, she used her grandmother's old clothes to create new fashion for her mom to wear. Then as a teen, Amber decided that she was going to make a quilt, so she did. Since then, Amber has quilted on and off, but when she started doing it more seriously, she realized that the design and the pattern layout was her favorite part. Up to that point, Amber had never used someone else's pattern. But, realizing that she wanted to try writing her patterns, she started purchasing patterns so she could learn how it was done. As Amber was building her pattern-writing skills, she had the idea for a subscription box that would bring fun projects right to your door (or inbox). In addition to the Modern Makes box, Amber felt compelled to create a pattern-writing course for budding designers. She decided to help other people do what she struggled to do on her own. If you know anyone who has taken her course, then you know that her platform builds strong partnerships in the quilting community. Amber believes in the old adage - "a rising tide lifts all boats". And as she pursues her dreams, Amber is now one of Riley Blake's new fabric designers! Her fabric line comes out this Fall, so call your local quilt shops to request it! 09 Sep 2024 | Meet Todd "The Bear Quilter"! - Ep. 117 | 00:51:22
Todd Leavitt, a Vermont transplant to North Carolina, has been on the quilt scene for quite some time now. But it hasn't always been his obvious passion. Todd and his brothers were all taught to sew at young ages by their mother. There was also some sewing during school for a home sciences class. Todd enjoyed sewing, but felt societal pressure to leave it behind and focus on his career. There weren't a lot of openly gay men in the sewing scene. All that changed when Todd experienced a heart-attack at 40. That was the wakeup call he needed to find more balance and start doing more of what he loved. That's where quilting entered his life. Now, he's a pattern designer, Craft-Thirster, Textile Daddy and content creator. The Bear Quilter has a new pattern to be released in October, and fabric kits and notions will be available on his website! Please enjoy this episode and go find Todd if you haven't already! 31 Jan 2022 | An Unlikely Movie Review - Ep 14 | 01:14:03
You’re here because you love podcasts (or quilting, or both) — we love ‘em too! One of our favorite podcasts is “How Did This Get Made” hosted by the hilarious Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas. It’s a podcast about bad movies and good friends. In this episode, we thought it would be fun to do our own riff on HDTGM with a quilty film from 1995, How to Make an American Quilt starring a young Winona Ryder, a bunch of other recognizable faces, and a brief but terrifying appearance by Jared Leto. Here’s what we thought.

04 Nov 2024 | Meet Erin Nichole of Mija Handmade! - Ep. 125 | 00:55:30
Erin Nichole Whinnery is the designer and maker behind Mija Handmade. Erin grew up, as she says, under her mother's sewing table. In 2011, she made a quilt for her niece, then her sewing sat on the backburner. Then, like a lot of us, she wanted something creative to do during the 2020 lockdown. She picked up some fabric and zippers and started making striped zippered pouches. When the novelty of pouches wore off, she dove into sewing in other ways. Stockings, home decor, quilts, improv... and along came the Sharrow Quilt. The first design of many to come from Mija Handmade. As you'll see in her patterns, Erin loves to incorporate bold lines with interesting geometry and movement. This is also demonstrated in her current Block of the Month: Learning Curves 2024. Erin and Amanda chatted about the beauty and inspiration that comes from what we see, and in the technical side of writing patterns. Erin views it as its own art, and Amanda agrees. Erin Nichole just released her latest pattern, Grandma Core, and is available now! You can also purchase acrylic templates to help get crisp even curves.
