22 Jul 2020 | S2E13 - Understanding the Assisted Fertility Process, with Kristen | 00:30:06
Up to 50% of women with Endometriosis experience infertility issues. This means that many eventually choose to go through the process of assisted fertility. Over the years, the success rates of assisted fertility methods have increased, and 1 in 4 treatment cycles are said to be successful. For those less than 35 years old, the success rates increase to 1 in 3.
In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is when eggs are collected from the ovaries and then combined with the sperm in a laboratory dish, and any fertilised embryos are then implanted into the womb.
Today’s conversation is with Kristen, an embryologist whose job it is to care for the embryos from the time of egg retrieval to when is it safely implanted in the woman’s uterus. Kristen will be sharing with us what her job is like, what the process of IVF entails and what makes her job so fulfilling. Kristen's Instagram page is @ilikemyeggsfertilised. Go show her some love!

Welcome to episode 4 of Endo 101! Endo 101 is a mini-series that seeks to inform and educate on the enigma that is Endometriosis. My purpose in this mini-series is to talk about all the aspects of endometriosis, right from proper definition to treatment methods and even myths that are pandered about the disease. I am so privileged to be joined today by Mr. Thomas Bainton, the Endometriosis Fellow and a senior registrar in obstetrics and gynecology at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, in London, UK. The last episode we discussed the path from symptoms to diagnosis and really went into the different hormonal treatment options for Endometriosis. Today, we will be talking about surgical treatments for Endometriosis, and why the gold-standard treatment for Endometriosis is excision surgery to remove the disease completely. It is also very important to understand that there are many factors that can require your doctors to offer various other treatments other than surgery. This could depend on your situation, for example, the desire to have children which means your fertility has to be treated as a priority, the location of the disease, e.g. if it is Deep Infiltrating bowel disease that could be complex and potentially require a colostomy bag, and so on. One thing that is very important is to understand all your options, and why your doctor thinks a particular approach is the best one for you. So join us again on this episode as Tom breaks it all down for us! If you have any questions you are keen to get answers to or if you just enjoyed this episode and would like us to know, send an email to info@notdefinedbyendo.com with your questions, or DM me on Instagram @notdefinedbyendo or the Instagram Page of Chelsea Centre for Minimal Invasive Gynaecology (CCMIG) @ccmig.london. There, Tom shares a lot of relevant and helpful information on Endometriosis. Don't forget to share, rate, and subscribe to this podcast. Till next time, remember, you are not defined by endo! Welcome to episode 5 of Endo 101! Endo 101 is a mini-series that seeks to inform and educate on the enigma that is Endometriosis. We also understood the different surgical approaches based on the kind of Endometriosis, whether an endometrioma, peritoneal endo or even deep infiltrating bowel endometriosis. Today, we want to talk about Endometriosis and Infertility. Up to 40-50% of women with Endometriosis do suffer from infertility or subfertility. 02 Sep 2020 | S2E15 - Racial Bias in Healthcare | 00:56:48
“None of us alone can save the nation or the world. But each of us can make a positive difference if we commit ourselves to do so.” - Cornel West Today's episode is with Amy, an amazing advocate for Endometriosis, and founder of 'In Sixteen Years of Endometriosis' Podcast, where she and her co-host Brittany give us incredibly uplifting accounts of their experiences dealing with Endometriosis for over 16 years. Amy is very active on social media, specifically Instagram, through her page ‘in16yearsofendo’, where she thoroughly educates the community on Endometriosis and the scientific research available and provides resources to support women with the disease. She also has a website https://insixteenyears.com/ where she has so many resources to educate and support women going through the disease. Amy and I support each other a lot and share our life experiences, and we thought it would be great to do a podcast episode together. We realised that something that we had both been thinking about is racial bias in healthcare as well as access, or the lack of it, to healthcare in lesser developed countries like Nigeria. We decided that this is something we both wanted to explore, research and talk about and here we are! Remember that you can follow me on instagram @notdefinedbyendo, and you can follow Amy @in16yearsofendo. This episode is airing on each of our podcasts, so kick off your shoes, get yourself a refreshing drink, and let’s have a listen!

03 Jun 2020 | S2E10 - Unlearn Your Pain, with Dr. Howard Schubiner | 00:25:21
Pain is no stranger to chronic illness sufferers, in fact, sometimes it feels like we don’t remember what it feels like to be without pain. Many of us have been told that the pain is only in our heads, which only serves to unfairly invalidate what we are going through. But what exactly is pain? Is it caused by strange endometriosis implants in our bodies? Is it caused by inflammation? Is it caused by structural abnormalities within our organs, muscles, or bones? How are pain signals transmitted from the brain? These are all very important questions and today’s episode is with Dr. Howard Schubiner, a clinician, author, and researcher who has conducted ground-breaking research on a treatment plan that can resolve, rather than manage, chronic pain. He is the director of the Mind-Body Medicine Center at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan, and a Clinical Professor at Wayne State University and Michigan State University School of Medicine. He has authored over 60 scientific publications and lectures nationally and internationally. Dr. Howard is the author of the book Unlearn Your Pain and co-author of the book Hidden from View - A clinician's guide to psychophysiological disorders. 30 Sep 2020 | S2E17 -The Bittersweet Early Diagnosis of Endometriosis, with Lily Avery | 00:25:23
Today’s episode is with Lily Jane Avery, a 19-year Endometriosis warrior, and advocate. Lily was diagnosed with endometriosis at the very young age of 14, and she is one of the few who have had to carry this burden of a chronic disease at such a young age. Despite her early diagnosis, Lily was once told by her doctor to buy a colouring book to colour away her pain. This only made her fight even harder to be heard. Lily is not a victim, oh no! Instead, she has embarked on the very important cause of advocating for and educating both young and old about endometriosis and letting people know that the pain is not in their head. Lily started an Instagram account called @over.endo where she educates people on the various aspects of the disease. Please follow her and show her some love. 04 Aug 2021 | S4E3 - Endometriosis: Under-funded & Under-researched - A conversation with Endometriosis South Coast Advocate and Research Student, Jodie Hughes | 00:31:04
Welcome to today's episode of Not Defined by Endo Podcast! Today’s episode is with Jodie Hughes, the founder of the charity Endometriosis South Coast in the UK, and a Ph.D. student studying how endometriosis differs in different sample groups of people. Jodie’s endometriosis story begins at the tender age of 11, and like many of us, she has had to navigate a behemoth healthcare system, advocating for herself and others and raising awareness about the disease. Endometriosis is such a poorly-funded and poorly-researched disease, and Jodie is working hard to change this by devoting her life to studying the impact of Endo. For her undergraduate and master's studies, she researched the stress levels of patients with endometriosis and was able to obtain statistically significant results in both studies. Apart from doing research on Endo, she also founded the all-inclusive charity called Endometriosis South Coast, supporting and educating those with endometriosis by running webinars and support groups. Welcome to today's episode of Not Defined by Endo Podcast! Today’s episode is with Kelly Newton, who founded BP3 Underwear in 2019. We know that many young women with Endometriosis, Interstitial cystitis, and even those in postpartum also have bladder issues, and Kelly soon realized that all of these women could use her knickers both for their periods and leaks and incontinence. He also sees and treats women with other benign gynaecological conditions such as heavy menstrual bleeding, ovarian cysts and menstrual disorders. He is also an NHS Consultant at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (ASPH) in Surrey. ASPH has a long history in the treatment of severe endometriosis for many years and was one of the first few centres accredited for treatment of severe endometriosis by the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE). In 2012 Mr Khazali co-founded CEMIG (Centre for Endometriosis and Minimally Invasive Gynaecology) at ASPH, which has been one of the busiest accredited centres for the treatment of severe endometriosis in the UK. In 2018 and again in 2019, CEMIG treated more patients than any other accredited endometriosis centre in the UK, making it the busiest BSGE centre in the country. 18 Sep 2019 | S1E1 - My Endometriosis Story | 00:15:21
Welcome to Not Defined by Endo Podcast, Season 1 - Episode 1. Our first full episode this season tells my endometriosis story. How it all began, and where I am on my journey now. As many chronic illness sufferers know, there never seems to be an end to the journey. But we each have a unique, though familiar story, and we need to embrace every aspect of our journey. Healing is never linear, so we take it one day at at time. My story is by no means done, and I would love for you to join me on this journey of healing and self-discovery. 25 Sep 2019 | S1E2 - "You can have pain-free Sex with Endo" - Guiding you towards Pelvic Health with Dr Nicole Cozean DPT | 00:51:26
Endometriosis and pelvic pain. Painful sex. Painful urination. Painful bowel movement. These are just some of the symptoms many of us experience, both during and outside of our menstrual periods. Many say endometriosis causes pelvic floor dysfunction. But what exactly is the pelvic floor? What are the signs that I have a pelvic floor dysfunction? And how does Endometriosis affect this? How can I improve my pelvic health? Today's episode is with amazing Nicole Cozean DPT, a Physical Therapist I had the honor of meeting a while ago. Nicole has a private practice, called Pelvic Sanity in Orange County, California and treats women and men with any sort of pelvic concern such as pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, urinary and bowel conditions and pre- and post-natal issues. Nicole has so much knowledge about the relationship between endometriosis and pelvic health and teaches us how to address our pelvic pain by addressing our sources of pain generators and therefore calming down our central nervous system. For more information on Nicole’s practice, visit www.pelvicsanity.com. Also follow her on Instagram @pelvicsanity and make sure to watch her IGTV Endo and Gut health mini-series. Nicole’s Book, the Interstitial Cystitis Solution is available on amazon and can be found here. If you enjoyed this episode, I would love to know. Join me on Instagram and Facebook. 02 Oct 2019 | S1E3 - Beating Endo - An Endometriosis Specialist's Perspective | 00:59:07
Does an Ultra-sound detect Endometriosis? Why do I still have so much pain after my surgery? Does pregnancy really cure Endometriosis? What are my options? Many Endometriosis sufferers have all these questions, but feel like no one, not even the medical professionals who we trust so much, can answer them. This is why I am so excited to be speaking to Dr Iris Orbuch in today's episode. Iris is an Endo Excision specialist and the Director of the Advanced Gynecologic Laparoscopy Center in Los Angeles and New York City. She operates at Lenox Hill Hospital, Mount Sinai and Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. She is one of the few physicians who understand that even though excision surgery is the gold standard for endometriosis treatment, the disease requires an integrative approach combining both Eastern and Western medicine to help patients heal and get them on the road to recovery. Infact, she just released a book called ‘Beating Endo’ with her co-author Dr Amy Stein. There is so much to learn from Iris today and it is an absolute honour to be interviewing her. So, sit back, relax and let’s have a listen! If you want to reach Dr Iris and know more, please visit her website www.lagyndr.com. You can also call the number on the website. Also make sure to buy her book, Beating Endo, which is now out. You can get it on www.HarperCollins.com or www.HarperCollins.co.uk and also on Amazon.
