30 Mar 2021Crime Stoppers of Houston, with Rania Mankarious00:27:53

Rania Mankarious, CEO of Crime Stoppers of Houston, guests on the SnapCast. We talk about The Balanced Voice podcast, her work with Crime Stoppers, and the challenges she currently faces in the current climate. Among the topics we cover:

  1. Fundraising and the need for effective messaging and marketing. You can have the best product in the world but if the community doesn’t know it, get it and relate to it, you have no value.
  2. Know your audience. Nonprofits must speak to so many different groups - their donors, their volunteers, their team, their partners and the communities they serve. It’s an art and a science to understand how to message individually or simultaneously to all.
  3. Strategic planning is sometimes a myth.
  4. When it comes to fundraising, think broadly, think strategically and think ahead. It’s critical that NGOs are ready for whatever punches they take. Layering support and expanding support options is critical.
  5. Social media is the greatest tool in your tool belt. Not enough nonprofits use it to tell their stories or they use it only to post events or “flyers.” Social media and the virtual world can and should be your greatest entryway for the community to learn about the nuances of your work.

  • Changes and innovations GlobalGiving is implementing to lighten the load for their partners.
  • Lessons nonprofits may learn from pandemic, including the presence of a silver lining.

"Remember the feeling of bumping into an old friend at an in-person conference? You two step off to the side in the conference center hallway and take a few minutes to catch up before moving on to see the keynote speech together or to go find new medical professionals to network with. Your friend maybe even pulls you into a new conversation and introduces you to other people they know. If your conversation is cut short, you can always meet up later during the event when there's time. This is how fluid networking can be in real life." We discuss the ease of use and relevance of this software for nonprofits.

02 Mar 2021Can Nonprofits Be Bootstrapped For Free?00:37:27

Mickey speaks with Kate West, CEO of Your Fundraising Lab, and David Somerfleck, Founder and CEO of DMS Blue about the wisdom of using volunteers to staff critical organizational roles. Kate maintains volunteer-led organizations cannot grow or scale. Among the points we cover:

1.  Nonprofits need to distinguish between volunteers and unpaid staff and/or pro bono services for many reasons.  Volunteers don't work in their area of expertise, but do tasks that anyone could do or that the nonprofit has to train them to do.  This can be very valuable to a nonprofit, but volunteers are not considered to be as reliable, loyal or expert as staff (paid or unpaid).

2.  As an exercise, nonprofits could/should develop a budget that lists realistic salaries and fringe benefits for staff (whether paid or unpaid) and then offset these expenses with in-kind contributions as income.  This will help the board and donors (and staff) see the value of unpaid staff contributions.

3.  It's difficult to institutionalize volunteer-led organizations.

4.  When volunteers inhabit formal roles in organizations, corners are often cut including the development of job descriptions, personnel policies and other structures that guide professional conduct and development.  Unless it's somebody's role to develop these critical instruments, they are often remain unrealized.

Chris says, “I'm a firm believer of rather than talking about the problem, become the solution, and we did that.” What was the solution? Listen to find out.   Joe Arnold, retired SVP at Suntrust Bank, and panel moderator of the conference. Joe notes: “We've got a lot of CEOs who are constantly working in their own vacuum and don't know some of the other CEO leaders across our city, and we thought putting together an annual conference about four and a half hours once a year would be a great way to pull them all together. And I'm just delighted that here in our 13th year that again, we've got to sell out crowd.”   Mindy Binderman, Executive Director of GEEARS, the Georgia Early Education Alliance for Ready Students. We talk about issues of the importance of leadership in all of nonprofit work, “because we know that good leadership is essential for getting great outcomes for kids.”   Howie Rosenberg, Executive Director of Gigi's Playhouse Atlanta, a Down syndrome achievement center offering free services to participants and their families with Down syndrome. “I'm very passionate about what I do. I love my job. I love having no barrier for people to be successful and to get services. I can tell you we may have a family that lives at Country Club to the south, and we might have family that lives in their car and they get the same quality service and the same experiences as each other.”   Ron Alston, Senior Vice President at Truist, leading the Not-For-Profit & Government Banking practice. We discuss how nonprofit banking may differ from any other kind of banking: “Nonprofit needs are different. They really revolve around financing solutions they have. So if they are engaged in a capital campaign and they are building infrastructure, they can utilize tax exempt financing vehicles that small businesses don't have access to. If they're doing work in low to moderate income communities, there are tax credit programs that can be used to help them complete projects…”

  • Volunteer managers should be more valued within their organizations.
  • Volunteer managers should be using social media to tell their unique, professional stories.

12 Apr 2022AFP's Study of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access00:21:25

Melissa Brown of Melissa Brown and Associates visits the SnapCast to talk about the work she did with the Association of Fundraising Professionals to produce the IDEA Report (Assessment of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access).

Key points include:

Collaborative study with NINE organizations participating including African Americans in Development Offices; AFP; CFRE, Women of Color in Fundraising and Philanthropy; and more, with sponsorship from DonorPerfect.

Bad behavior is too common - 34% of study participants reported experiencing some type of bias in the prior year. Bias from co-workers is far more common than from constituents -- and both are vastly underreported at the workplace, with maybe half of the people who experienced bias saying they notified a supervisor or HR staff member. We asked about far more than race -- including age, religion, bias based on physical appearance (tattoos, size, hair style), and so on.

People leave jobs because of bias they have experienced. The NP sector is losing talent because in a high percentage of organizations people are either blind the realities, or possibly "just too nice" to admit this is a problem.

To address bias: NP leaders must be strong in their statements and actions to show no tolerance. Provide time and funding (for facilitation ) of discussions that are themselves inclusive. Have a team of diverse (whatever that means where you are) staff and volunteers to create written policies and procedures. The report has links to some examples. Then be sure that EVERY staff member (and volunteer) is empowered to recognize, name, and take action in the event of bias.

12 Jun 2021Designing Equitable Futures00:51:29

On this week's Possibility Project: More and more critiques and conversations are capturing the elements of design that reinforce white supremacist, white dominant, ableist, and cis-heterogeneous norms. The future of our work as changemakers rests on how we reimagine, elevate, and co-create disruptively. So, let’s get into the nitty gritty of addressing how we might use speculative and disruptive design as tools to imagine and create possible futures, all centered around equity.

These fantastic changemakers will lead us in this session:

  • Katie Krummeck is an educational designer and an international thought leader in leveraging the power of design to drive change in the K-12 system.
  • Christopher Rudd is an Instructor and Head of Community-led Design for the Chicago Design Lab at the Illinois Institute of Technology-Institute of Design (ID) where his work focuses on co-designing with community stakeholders.

09 Feb 2021Doing More With Less, with Ben Munoz00:22:03

In 2006, Ben Munoz suffered a rare form of stroke called arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Unable to find the support he was looking for on the internet during his lengthy recovery, he created a patient community AVMSurvivors.org in late 2007 to find others like him.

It rapidly became apparent that “community is the best medicine.” Ben soon co-founded BensFriends.org, with the sole focus of creating and operating safe, compassionate communities for people who need them (including patients and their families & friends).

Among the things we discuss is how the organization’s culture is built around running lean and efficient. A core tenet is always considering how to do more with less--how to maximize impact for the patients in their support communities.

Some of these approaches include:

  • Asking for favors.
  • Reading how-to books and doing it ourselves.
  • Finding overseas talent and figuring out how to work across time zones.
  • Avoiding sunk cost fallacy on failing projects.
  • Remembering it's not a sprint, it's a marathon.
  • Providing a mission that people can get behind.

21 Apr 2020What Kind Of Boat Are You Driving? Sarah Olivieri, Part 100:17:38

This is the first of three conversations we had with Sarah Olivieri, Founder of PivotGround, author of The Impact Method. The Impact Method hinges on three guiding principles:

  • Having a process for improvement.
  • Having plan in place for implementation, instead of a stand-alone strategic plan.
  • Building the right leadership / organizational structure.

We discuss the notion that the vast majority of nonprofits don't actually have money problems--that they really have people problems, not knowing how to organize and leverage their people.

18 Oct 2021Inflation Proof Your Nonprofit, with Sean Hale00:22:11

Mickey talks with Sean Hale of Sean Hale Consulting to dissect the issue of inflation, and talk about things nonprofits can do to protect the buying power of their reserved funds. This conversation stems from Sean's recent blog post:

https://www.seanhale.org/blog/dont-let-inflation-wipe-out-your-cash-surplus

Does your nonprofit have more money in the bank than you need to cover day-to-day operations?  If so, rising prices across the economy, AKA inflation, could significantly reduce the value of your nest egg.  Please don’t allow your nonprofit’s hard-earned savings to go up in smoke.

09 Jul 2024No Matter How Shiny It Is...00:32:48

Paul Morris is the Founder/Principal of Foundry Fundraising. We talk about the nonprofit sector's use of technology. Among the things we discuss:

  • Technology won't do the work for you and doesn't solve all your problems.
  • Nonprofits are woefully underinvesting in the technology tools needed, especially for development. There seems to be three reasons for this:

  • Nonprofits don't have to invest wildly, they can and should be smart about it. The right tools supports the work.

  • The impact of this underinvestment? Wasting a ton of time - staff, stakeholders, volunteers, donors.
  • The risk to not investing has short-term and long-term impacts.

13 Feb 2025Computerwork vs Peoplework Colleen Cook00:25:30

Colleen Cook is the Chief Business Officer for High Tide. We talk at length about computerwork vs peoplework, and how High Tide's unification of data makes data management universally useful for the entire nonprofit. Among the things we discuss:

  • Unified, comprehensive data for nonprofits: Nonprofits deal with a lot of data points, but too often that data is siloed, making it difficult to see the complete picture. Streamlined data allows nonprofits to make fully informed decisions about donor relationships, communication strategies, etc. This is especially important because nonprofits tend to deal with higher levels of employee churn, meaning that data points can be lost when employees leave the organization if streamlined processes are not in place.
  • Technology lag in the nonprofit sector: Nonprofits tend to be years behind other industries when it comes to technology development & adoption. Fundraising vs. sales: Fundraising and sales at times use similar strategies and concepts (i.e. digital engagement metrics) - but there are key differences when one asks for a donation for a nonprofit, compared to selling a product or service to a customer.
  • Donor experience: Every touchpoint with a donor is critical for nonprofits in order to maintain positive, lasting relationships within their donor revenue stream. Nonprofits should tailor the donor experience to each individual donor, with unique communication, requests, and touchpoints for each donor. “People give to people.”
  • Changing donor demographics: Nonprofits need to consider and begin establishing relationships with the next generation of donors. Trillions of dollars will be changing hands from current, aging donors to the younger generation (donors of tomorrow), and nonprofits need to establish those relationships well before they begin asking for money. Millennials and Gen-Z also have different expectations on communication, accountability, etc. than Boomers. All of this must be considered & acted upon by nonprofit organizations.

14 Apr 2022Association of Philanthropic Counsel00:17:33

Melissa Brown hangs with the SnapCast for a second conversation about the Association of Philanthropic Counsel, a membership association of consulting firms that advise philanthropic (nonprofit) organizations. Upholding a strict code of ethics, APC is committed to ensuring that nonprofit organizations of all sizes can engage experienced, qualified counsel by strengthening the abilities, growing the resources, and expanding the knowledge and networks of our members. Our key talking points include:

  • Code of ethics even "stricter" than AFP's - which is one reason for the referral and references pieces. For example, we commit to continuously updating our professional knowledge. In fact, that knowledge-gain is a key reason people join APC.
  • Membership survey this year showed extremely high commitment to DEIA as an organization and also across members in terms of how they work with clients, such as for board development, strategic planning, and other services, plus in their fee structures, etc.
  • Discussions still underway but it looks like revised Values, Vision, and Mission will be very clear about the commitment we have to inclusion, diversity, equity and access within APC - as a membership association -- and in our firms. That commitment dates to the organization's founding in 1995. It will be much clearer, though, in our public-facing language.
  • We try to live this commitment within the Association through how we seek vendors, our programming, including regular reading/discussion groups and who we invite as speakers, and in our firms based on how we work with clients, our hiring practices, etc. Within APC, we are also working on reviewing association fees and processes to be more accessible, too - stay tuned.
