Black History Continues...

EP 103 Carl Scott Head of Content Players’ Tribune

An audiophile by nature, Carl’s path to a career in media has been a circuitous one. After receiving a degree in Interactive Multimedia from Columbia College Chicago, Carl worked for several years designing, developing, and programming web features for a range of clients including Esquire, Elle, Christie’s auction house, Black Girls Rock!, International Masters Publishers, and ASCAP. In his spare time, he began contributing to a fledgling Chicago-based internet radio show at the invitation of a friend. As he began to expand and hone his audio and storytelling chops, he accepted an opportunity to work as a mobile facilitator with StoryCorps, the nationally-renowned oral history project featured regularly on National Public Radio. He packed his bags and travelled through a half-dozen states interviewing, recording and archiving the stories of everyday Americans. On this journey, he performed one of the final interviews with prize-winning historian John Hope Franklin, recorded not long before his untimely passing. After that fateful year, Carl went on to produce shows for Public Radio Exchange in conjunction with Black Public Media (FKA the National Black Programming Consortium), and wrote and produced three hour-long documentaries for New York Public Radio (WNYC/WQXR). In 2018 he teamed up with the award-winning film and theatre actor Harry Lennix to sound design Lennix’s directorial debut for the stage, A Small Oak Tree Runs Red. Currently Carl serves as Head of Content at The Players’ Tribune where he oversees all podcast and video and editorial written content for this new media sports company, a first-person athlete storytelling outlet founded by Hall of Fame baseball player, Derek Jeter. EP 110: POD.DRALAND ft. Alexandra Cohl

Alexandra Cohl is a writer, editor, educator, podcast producer & host of The Pod Broads, and a podcast social media growth and PR strategist.

Alexandra grew up in Maryland and moved to New York City in 2014. We talk about Baltimore, being a writer and helping support women in the podcasting

POD.DRALAND is a space dedicated to the voices of women in podcasting. Here, she writes in-depth women-hosted podcast episode recommendations and quick podcast lists, as well as feature interviews on independent women podcasters. Alexandra's intention with this website and the community have cultivated specifically on Instagram is to amplify women’s voices, encourage everyone to listen to women, and increase these podcasters’ subscribers and streams.

Only one-third of hosts on major networks are women, and that needs to change. Beyond that, she noticed that often men are still looked to as the main experts in certain fields like business, film, medical practices, and more. This, too, must change because it is simply not true, and one way this can be done is through podcasting. So, this space is for deep listening and learning, as well as entertainment, for people of all genders

18 Oct 2021EP 149: Maryland State Senator Cory V. McCray00:50:31

EP 149 Aaron Dante sits down with  Maryland State Senator Cory V. McCray. We talk about how got  into politics. How my neighbors have spoke highly of him. What bills he has helped pass and his love for reading books. Tune in this is an episode you don't want to miss.

Cory McCray was elected to represent the 45th Legislative District in the Maryland State Senate in 2018. Since that time, he has been named a “legislator to watch” by The Daily Record and Maryland Matters. Additionally, Cory also serves as First Vice Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party.

Cory’s story is a uniquely Baltimore story. Like many of us, Cory grew up in a Baltimore whose greatest resource was its hardworking men and women. In spite of that resource, the City often struggled to give those men and women the opportunity they deserved. As a teenager at Fairmount- Harford High School, Cory was also in search of opportunity. After a brief trip down the wrong path as a teenager, he found out about apprenticeships at the age of 18. The rest is history. By 19, he had become a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. By 20, he was a homeowner. Cory continued to meet opportunity halfway, working his way through community college and a bachelor’s degree, all while growing a small business focused on rental properties.

Those years also brought marriage and four loving children, along with a career focused wholly on working families and the communities they hold dear. Cory continues working for his local union and as a community organizer to this day, helping expand the opportunity for a better life to men and women across our City.

In 2014, neighbors across the 45th District elected Cory to represent them in Maryland’s House of Delegates. During his time in the House, leading news outlets like Center Maryland called him one of the most effective freshman legislators in the entire state.

Cory’s approach to public service is listening to his constituents’ problems and then figuring out how to solve them. When his constituents asked for better jobs, Cory passed the ACTION and POWER Apprenticeship Acts, which expands funding for apprenticeships that lead to family supporting careers. When he was asked for a larger investment in public schools, Cory passed legislation that scores school construction funding, so that lawmakers can’t cut Baltimore out of the resources it deserves.

Cory’s neighbors also asked him to make sure that they have a voice in Annapolis. He gave them a voice by passing legislation that restored voting rights to thousands of Marylanders. Just weeks after that victory, Governor Larry Hogan vetoed the bill and again silenced voices at the ballot box that many men and women had found for the first time in decades. But Cory didn’t give up. He returned to the legislature more determined than ever, building a coalition of legislators from across Maryland who overturned the governor’s veto, restoring the voices that Governor Hogan had silenced

As the 45th District’s Senator, Cory is continuing his mission to bring greater levels of resources and equity to the City of Baltimore.

Senator McCray, current, past, and public service assignments below:

Current Assignments

2020 Deputy Majority Whip 2019 Budget and Taxation Committee 2019 Capital Budget Subcommittee, Budget and Taxation Committee 2019 Health and Human Services Subcommittee, Budget and Taxation Committee 2019 Pensions Subcommittee, Budget and Taxation Committee 2019 Joint Audit and Evaluation Committee 2019 Joint Committee on Pensions 2019 Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland

With a start in the Baltimore school system, most notably the historic Western Senior High School, Jada M. McCray, LCSW-C, began a lifelong dedication to education and growth. Though having already succeeded greatly, Jada felt the call to forge new paths in the mental health field. In recent years, ada has become an entrepreneur.

31 Jan 2022EP 163: LIVE SHOW ft. Photographer E. Brady Robinson SK8R GRLS PHOTO EXHIBITION00:20:02

EP 163: Aaron recorded a live show with Photographer E. Brady Robinson at the Hotel Indigo discussing her new Photo Exhibit SK8R GRLS. We discuss her inspiration behind the project, her love for roller skating, how she chose the Women for this and what is the soundtrack to this Exhibition.

IG:@ebradyrobinson

IG: MarylandArtPlace

IG: Acutevisions

SK8R GRLS is a photo series by E. Brady Robinson celebrating the freedom and joy of roller skating. The  exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo Baltimore, located at 24 West Franklin St. from Jan 25th - March 18th. A  public reception will take place on March 8th from 5 to 7 pm in celebration of International Women’s Day.

In spring of 2021, Robinson took up skating as a way to stay active and reconnect with friends outdoors  during COVID-19. During these skate dates, she photographed friends and eventually, a wider network of  Baltimore-based female-identifying skaters. This work combines her love of athleticism, fitness, and fashion  photography. These images, made at a moment where it felt like the world was reopening after over a year  of closure and isolation during the pandemic, evoke a feeling of release and freedom.

Robinson completed her BFA in photography at MICA and MFA in photography at the Cranbrook Academy of  Art. Her background is in documentary photography and portraiture. The nine archival metal prints on  display at the Hotel Indigo depict strong women amidst a backdrop of Baltimore monuments and sites.  Locations such as Lake Montebello, Patterson Park, the Druid Hill Tennis Courts, and the Ravens parking lot,  signal the public landscape of Baltimore for those that know it well, in contrast to photographs made in the  artist’s Maryland Art Place studio which utilize strobe and gel lighting to simulate the vibes of the 80’s  roller skating rinks reminiscent of Robinson’s childhood.

The skaters photographed include artists, musicians, and female entrepreneurs; women in the creative scene  in Baltimore, including Amy Cavanaugh, Caitlin Gill, Jade Davis, Tina Thompson, Brittany Wight, Les Gray,  Hayley Furman, Jessica Lauryn, Sophie Kluckhuhn, and Wildège François.

Brady Robinson is a photographer based in Baltimore and a current resident artist at Maryland Art Place.  She divides her time between personal art projects and commissioned work. Her documentary Art Desks was  published by Daylight Books with an essay by Andy Grundberg and distributed by ARTBOOK D.A.P. Her  photographs have been featured in The Washington Post, Channel One Russia TV, The Bund Shanghai,  Hyperallergic, BmoreArt, Featureshoot, Slate among others. Robinson leads photography workshops  throughout the United States. Select exhibitions include Lishui Photography Festival China, Orlando Museum  of Art, Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Katzen Art Center at American University, AIPAD NYC, and Art Miami. Select  collections include American University, Orlando Museum of Art and Spanish Cultural Center, Santo Domingo,  DR.

Robinson is a University Instructor of Photography at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, and faculty at  ICP in New York. She received her BFA in photography from The Maryland Institute, College of Art, and MFA  in photography from Cranbrook Art Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Robinson is represented by  Addison/Ripley Fine Art in Washington, DC.

Maryland Art Place (MAP) inspires, supports, and encourages artistic expression through innovative programming, exhibitions,  and educational opportunities while recognizing the powerful impact art can have on our community. MAP creates a dynamic  environment for artists of our time to engage the public by nurturing and promoting new ideas. MAP has served as a critical resource  for contemporary art in the Mid-Atlantic since 1981. mdartplace.org. MAP is supported by the Maryland State Arts Council and The  Citizens of Baltimore County.

EP 113: "A Chance to Make a Difference" Part 1 ft Jade-Addon Hall

Contributors: Comedian Ivan Martin and Lawyer/ Legal Contribitor Natasha Axelrod

Like many of you, this past year has been eye-opening for me. The overwhelming inequities and systemic racism that continues to plague our nation left me wondering, “What I can do to help?” One area that became abundantly clear was the healthcare gap. In 2019, for example, we lost 73,000 Black Americans to cancer; the highest rate of any racial or ethnic group. Because of the exorbitant costs of cancer treatment, even with Medicaid, the gaps in healthcare are significant.

My friend Jade-Addon Hall was nominated for the 2021 Man & Woman of the Year Campaign, to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). I’m proud to announce that I have joined Team Cure Excellence in an effort to raise funds and awareness for ending blood cancers and providing equitable care for those who need it most.

We discuss why he asked me to join in the effort for raising money to LLS. We talk about how I was hesitant at first and why this is so important to me. This is part 1 of 2 episodes about LLS. Part 2 comes out on Tuesday April 4.6.21 with a local Baltimore Cancer Survivor that was helped by LLS.

You may have seen Maryland Governor Wes Moore speaking at the DNC. Last week, the CEO of For All Season Inc  Beth Anne Dorman  and Aaron Dante the host of  NoPixAfterDark podcast had the opportunity to sit down with him at MACo to discuss the critical importance of mental health.

In our conversation, Governor Moore shared, "Being able to deal with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) is so important because oftentimes we're talking about people who are suffering the consequence of something that they're not responsible [for]. As a kid who came up with a multitude of ACEs that came up against me, if there were not people and systems in place that allowed me to understand that the world was bigger than what was just directly in front of me, or the circumstances I was born into, or the circumstances that happened to me after I was born, then I would not be here right now, and definitely not as a 63rd governor of the state of Maryland." Catch the full episode to hear more of his insights and why mental health matters for all of us.
