03 Aug 2021 | Covid Communication and Comparisonitis: Q&A with Marty & Em | 00:14:51
Episode #153 // This Q&A episode deals with two excellent listener questions! The first, is about how to communicate the uncertainty of the current environment, while still making employees feel supported and secure. Sometimes, it can be tricky to find the balance between honesty and optimism. In the second question, we explore how to manage your emotions when a new employee comes in, all shiny and keen, and casts a shadow over you. The contrast between their attitude and energy, and your own, can make you feel even more jaded and exhausted. So how do you cope with these feelings? This episode has some great hacks to help you approach these types of situations with confidence and ease! We LOVE answering listener questions, so if you've got something you'd like us to cover, send your question to hello@yourceomentor.com and we'll add it to the Q&A list. 28 Jan 2020 | The Curse of the Middle Manager: All Pain, No Glory? | 00:20:29
Episode #74 // Middle management roles are sometimes the toughest of any role in an organisation. However, if you have the right mindset and perspective, it is also the place where your leadership career is forged. If you have already passed through middle management ranks, this is an opportunity to once again put yourself in a middle managers’ shoes. If you are living the middle management dream right now, I have some tips that will hopefully help you to navigate the choppy waters ahead. In this episode, I get really specific about the divergences between senior management and the workforce, that tend to strand a middle manager in between (with some practical suggestions, of course, for how to handle it). 07 May 2019 | If Money Doesn't Motivate, What Does? Tapping into discretionary effort | 00:16:41
Episode #36 // We spoke in Episode 30 about remuneration, and how leaders should view the role of pay rises and bonuses in motivating their people to perform. Although bonuses can provide an effective performance incentive, there are many other ways to elicit people’s discretionary effort. So what do you do when you can’t throw money at people to get the results you need? This episode deals with the things that will motivate your people to perform and deliver value, no matter what is happening to their pay packet. We explore the principle that ‘the money is the money’, and that it is far easier to hire people who are intrinsically motivated, than it is to try to drag people kicking and screaming to deliver discretionary effort. Finally, we offer seven practical suggestions for motivating people without using financial incentives to bring out their best. 12 Mar 2019 | Your Peers Are Really Smart Too: What will differentiate you? | 00:16:22
Episode #28 // We have spoken in recent episodes about leadership attributes and competencies. During your career, you will come into contact with many people who are smart, well educated, experienced, shrewd, politically astute, and even some who are downright Machiavellian. So what is it that is going to make you stand out? In this episode, we cover off on the foundational criteria for career success (the ‘ticket to the dance’), and then go onto talk about what it takes to stand out even in this group. Knowing yourself, understanding your strengths and weaknesses, and not trying to be something you are not, are the keys to developing your own unique ‘leadership fingerprint’. 27 Apr 2021 | Fighting Fear: What does it take? | 00:18:22
Episode #139 // This week we take on a great listener question that will be on many people’s minds at the moment. Fear has been stoked to extraordinary levels during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the subsequent impact of lockdowns and travel bans on many businesses has been severe. Many people are living in fear, as they see their companies struggling to survive, and are faced with the harsh reality of their own lack of job security. What impacts are felt when individuals operate from a position of fear? What can we do to keep our fear in check? And what are the techniques for helping the people around us to keep going, so that we don’t see catastrophic impacts at the organisational level? This episode offers some practical guidance for dealing with the fear that we all feel at times like these. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode #43 // I have seen many leaders who are good under pressure, but just as many who really struggle in stress situations. Resilience is a core ingredient of success for leaders, regardless of the type of organisation they work for. If you can handle the inevitable setbacks that come with a level of calm, rational confidence it will help you to lead people through the toughest crises. 30 Jul 2019 | Building Trust and Managing Change: Q&A with Marty | 00:17:11
Episode #48 // This week, Em and I take on a few great questions that appear to keep coming up regularly for our listeners! The first question we tackle is from Sam, who wants to know how to build credibility quickly in a team he has inherited. (1:40) Secondly, we answer Blake’s question which is quite a complex one. He wants to know how to deal with those people in his team who really struggle with change, and how to work out when it’s right to just keep moving forward with the change, even when people are anxious or resistant to it. (7:30) We end with Laura’s question about using informal communication channels and cliques to communicate and incite change. 20 Nov 2018 | The War For Talent: Attracting and keeping the best people | 00:17:33
Episode #12 // Building the best team you possibly can is a prerequisite to delivering the results that will make you a successful leader. It begins with the hard yards of capability building that we spoke about in episode two ‘Building a High Performing Team’; there's also the need to attract and retain the best talent into your organisation, and you're in competition for that talent with other similar organisations. So in this episode, I’m going to focus on the fact that we all want to hire the best people, but sometimes this is easier said than done, and our industries and our companies have their natural limitations. I’m going to pull apart how we attract and retain the best talent we can by covering the below:
Now, I know that a lot of you listening to this podcast don't have the ability to influence the recruitment and retention cycle in your organisation. But if you don't, I think this presents a great opportunity for you to show some leadership from below, and to take this up the line and say, “Hey, I've got some ideas for how we can get better people into our organisation and into our business.” I challenge you to try that this week, and do something that's going to set you apart as a leader of the future. If you liked this episode, please share it with your leadership network on LinkedIn, Facebook or Instagram so that we can reach even more leaders, and make sure you tag us @yourceomentor so that we can connect with you! I know you'll take every opportunity you can this week to be a No Bullsh!t Leader. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
02 Oct 2018 | Using Power Wisely: Why HOW we get results actually matters | 00:16:38
Episode #5 // To be an outstanding leader, you need to understand power; what it is, and how to use it. Knowing what the different types of power are, and having awareness of what power you are using when, is fundamental to building a high performing team, that delivers discretionary effort for its leader. We all exercise different types of power each day in our relationships with others, so we’re going to start this episode by exploring what the different types of power actually are. We’ll then cover:
This episode takes some great research theory, and provides a practical roadmap for leaders to use. There are some hidden gems in there that will really help you evaluate the type of power you use with your people to get the job done. Challenge yourself this week and see if you can consciously use the influence of referent power instead of another type, to achieve results. I’d love to know how effective you find the different types of power to get the results you’re after, so please head over to my LinkedIn page and send me a direct message or send me an email hello@yourceomentor.com Hosted on Acast. 07 Jul 2020 | Addiction in the Workplace: Managing the fallout | 00:15:24
Episode #97 // Many people suffer from addictions, and they don’t check them in at the door when they turn up to work each day - their choice is to either function through their dysfunction, or lose their job. How should we, as leaders, handle incidences of addiction in our people? What are the boundaries we should maintain, and how much slack should we cut people who suffer from these issues? We look at why no team is immune to the effects of addiction, the link between substance abuse and impairment, and the role of social culture in the workplace. This is an incredibly tricky topic, so if this brings up anything for you, please reach out to one of the many organisations who can help such as Lifeline. 04 Dec 2018 | Friendly But Not Friends: Appropriate leader relationships | 00:18:33
Episode #14 // This week's topic is another slightly controversial one, but has turned out to be a very common question from listeners, so we thought we’d dedicate a whole episode to tackling how you as a leader, can set the right boundaries in your work relationships. The key questions here is, how do you strike the balance between maintaining professional distance, while establishing a trust based, caring relationship with your people? In this episode I’ll answer this question by covering the following:
The free resource for this week is ‘The Dos and Don't’s of Appropriate Leader Relationships’, which should really help you with drawing a line in the sand. You can download this resource from www.yourceomentor.com/episode14 This episode is one to mull over in the coming days. When you first listen to it you may think, ‘But I met my wife at work!’, or ‘I met some of my best friends at work!’, and that’s great, there are always exceptions to the rule. What I’m doing in this episode, is showing you the boundaries, the ramifications of different decisions, and what are in my opinion, the best types of relationships to create if you want to be able to lead your team effectively. As always, I’d love to know what you thought of this episode, so send me any of your feedback to hello@yourceomentor.com. If you haven’t rated or reviewed the podcast yet, please do it now! 18 Aug 2020 | When You're Ready to Commit: Leadership Beyond the Theory | 00:23:34
Episode #103 // We’ve had lots of questions lately from listeners asking how to implement the learnings from the podcast into their organizations, and to get their leaders to pick up on the concepts and actually use them! Unfortunately there are no simple answers to this question. The podcast is designed for leaders like you, to expose you to different ways of thinking, and to give you some practical tips, from the leadership “front line”. But for most of us, including me, when we listen to a podcast, we do so without any commitment to actually changing. It’s a great way to shift our thinking, but I know hundreds of executives who, despite having the right leadership knowledge, are genuinely awful leaders, because they never develop the habits that would truly help them to lead better. In this episode, Em and I talk about what it takes to change. This is why we developed Leadership Beyond the Theory (LBT) - if you love the podcast, LBT is the next step - it’s there for you when you’re ready to commit to taking the No Bullsh!t Leadership concepts, and embedding them as repeatable habits and behavior. If you’re not ready to commit, that’s perfectly fine - everyone is at a different stage in their lives and careers, and only you know when you are ready to get serious. But this episode is still worth listening to so that you can understand the difference between involvement and commitment. In this episode we mention the below links:

26 Feb 2019 | The Roadmap to Exceptional Leadership Part 2: The 7 Pillars of Leadership Performance | 00:15:48
Episode #26 // This week is Part Two of The Roadmap to Exceptional Leadership! I've taken my 30+ years of practical leadership experience, a LOT of trial and error and lessons from some incredible mentors, and have distilled these learnings into a model, my 'secret sauce'; the 7 Pillars of Leadership Performance, and this is what today’s episode is all about! These 7 pillars are designed to unlock the real, practical strategies and focus areas that we believe will make or break your leadership journey. These are the things that, in my experience, differentiate leaders from the incompetent, through the mediocre, to the great. In this episode I talk through the 7 Pillars of Leadership Performance in detail, covering why I believe they are so important, and what you can do to develop yourself in each of the below pillars:
Together these 7 Pillars of Leadership Performance are what make up our online leadership program, Leadership Beyond the Theory, and hopefully you can see after this episode why that is! 14 Sep 2021 | Don’t Lose Your Best People: Competing in the Labor Market | 00:17:35
Episode #159 // With a hot labor market emerging in many countries at present, the threat of your people being headhunted by a competitor is increasing. What steps can you take to keep your people committed to your organization? Who should you be trying to retain, and why (because it’s NOT everyone!)? Even when other companies are able to pay more for the same skills, there are things you can do to ensure you don’t lose your best people. But you may need to make some tough decisions pretty quickly, rather than waiting for the situation to deteriorate to the point where you’re forced to react. In this episode, I offer some ideas for identifying your key people and locking them in (even when you don’t have a lot of money to throw at them), and I reveal a method for looking at the bigger picture, so that you see the pay disparity issue in the context of the broader performance of the business! 20 Oct 2020 | Is Gut Feel a Thing? Q&A With Marty & Em | 00:18:52
Episode #112 // We get an enormous number of questions on making better decisions, but we haven’t really addressed this subject directly in quite a while. Ultimately your ability to make better decisions, faster than your competitors provides the foundation for execution excellence. In this week’s episode, we go back to Q&A format, where Em and I pick up a couple of questions from our podcast listeners on the finer points of decision making. First, Olivia asks if there’s a place for ‘gut feel’ in the decision making process. Then we answer Tim’s question on how to manage a situation where a decision that’s already been made by one of your people needs to be reversed. // We are on a mission to hit 1 million listens by the 31st December 2020. To help us to reach this goal, and impact even more leaders just like you who would benefit from the strategies and tools that Marty covers in the podcast, please share the podcast with your network. You can also subscribe, follow, rate and review the podcast, that will help more leaders find us when they’re searching for a new leadership podcast to binge on. If we hit our goal, we will be running a completely free live virtual leadership event in February 2021, and we would love for you to be there! 17 Mar 2020 | Jack's Legacy: The good, the bad, and the ugly | 00:18:30
Episode #81 // On 1st March 2020, we heard the news that Jack Welch had passed away at the age of 84 from renal failure. For over 20 years, he was the CEO and Chairman of General Electric, at the time one of America’s premier firms. Welch guided GE through the heady 1980s and 90s, at a time before the 2001 recession and the 2008 GFC curbed everyone’s enthusiasm. Welch is widely credited with transforming American capitalism. He was named the Manager of the Century by Fortune magazine in 1999, beating out some pretty stellar competition from earlier in the 20th Century. Since then a lot of what Welch did has been discredited, or at best questioned. In this episode, I look at the legacy that is Jack Welch, and explore the good, the bad, and the ugly. Hosted on Acast. 24 Aug 2021 | Managing Your Ambition: Don’t win, only to lose | 00:20:45
Episode #156 // I recently came across a new book called Return on Ambition: A Radical Approach to Your Achievement, Growth, and Well-Being. The book exposes a study on ambitious people, in which over half of those interviewed felt as though they’d sacrificed too much to get to where they were, and didn’t feel as though the rewards were commensurate with their effort and sacrifice. This got me thinking about my own ambition, and how I felt about my career achievements and the energy it took to fulfill them. Sure, nothing worthwhile comes without sacrifice, but how do you know in advance whether or not you’ll find those sacrifices were worth it when you look back in 10 or 20 years’ time? Everyone is different when it comes to their personal drivers and goals, but in this episode I give four key insights that you might find useful in deciding where you truly want your ambition to take you! 30 Apr 2019 | Driving Value From Your People: Establishing a winning culture | 00:16:00
Episode #35 // As senior leaders we spend an inordinate amount of time, energy and resources trying to squeeze every drop of juice out of the lemon when it comes to the concrete, tangible elements of business. We look for cost efficiencies, value accretive mergers and acquisitions, growth projects, product innovation, and greater capital productivity. However, we often ignore one of the greatest sources of untapped value – the people who work for the organisation day-in, day-out. They have an incredible impact on company performance, and the only way we can realise their full value is through providing the strong leadership that creates a high performance culture. Interestingly, this is the one area that most leaders tend to avoid. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
04 May 2021 | Horrible Bosses and Managing Up: Q&A with Marty and Em | 00:26:04
Episode 140 // In this week’s Q&A, we’re going to cover two questions about the subtle art of managing upwards and how to deal with a passive aggressive boss. We do get an awful lot of questions about how to deal with those leaders above you, so much so that we’re actually planning out a mini-course about it! In the meantime, the two questions we’ve chosen for this episode cover the main issues that we see. The first question from Genevieve is about how to influence upwards when you feel as though you don’t have any basis for doing so, and the second from Chris is about working under a passive aggressive boss. We cover a lot of ground in this one, dialling it right down to the practical questions you can ask your boss today to better influence up the line. If you've got a horrible boss, this episode is going to give you the perspective and practical tips you need to move forward with confidence! 20 Aug 2019 | The Millennial Dilemma: Is the future of leadership in good hands? | 00:16:37
Episode #51 // Last week marked International Youth Day, so to celebrate we’ve put together this long-awaited episode on how to lead Millennials, a pretty common question from listeners. Marty was recently quoted in an article for The CEO Magazine (Generations X and Y: leadership ready?) written by Adam Courtenay), which explored the future of leadership when Millennials take the baton from the current generation of leaders. Millennials get a bad rap for lots of things, but they have some distinct advantages over Baby Boomers and Gen Xs. Surprisingly, leading Millennials is no different to leading other types of people - the problem is that, if you are a poor leader, you will just get away with a lot less! Hosted on Acast. 03 Mar 2020 | Where Accountability and Culture Collide: Q&A with Marty | 00:19:17
Episode #79 // This episode takes us into another Q&A, where we address three excellent listener questions - and to celebrate International Women’s Day, we have an all-female roster. Janine asks about driving leadership change in an organisation where the tenets of accountability and empowerment that we subscribe to are not supported by the organisation’s prevailing culture. Vicky, an HR professional, asks us how organisations can better recognise the value to be achieved from the HR function. And for Lily, we explore the question, “If you are a young leader, where do you start?” All great questions, which we tend to get quite often in one form or another. This episode sheds some light on these issues that will broaden your perspective, no matter what your experience or industry. 22 Jun 2021 | Huddles, Handovers and Peer Envy: Q&A with Marty & Em | 00:25:38
Episode #147 // In this episode we have another couple of great questions to work through! First we’ll deal with how to manage the fallout of peer envy. There’s no doubt that when you start to rise above the pack, the pack will try to pull you back to them (especially in Australia - say hello to Tall Poppy Syndrome).
I saw a lot of these situations in my corporate career, and watched some people deal with this better than others! I’ll be sharing with you what I think works best.
Secondly, we had a great question come in from one of our Leadership Beyond the Theory alumni, Kaleb, who asked how he can more effectively manage handovers between teams on a change of shifts. We’re going to broaden this one out a little to start with all handovers, and then narrow down to the specific situation Kaleb has described. This is one of our longer episodes, but it's well worth the listen because we get really detailed on all these topics - it's a deep dive you don't want to miss! Hosted on Acast. Episode #141 // Understanding risk, and being able to respond in a manner that’s both appropriate and proportional to the level of risk is a fundamental capability for leaders. When we talk about judgement in leadership and decision making, a lot of it comes down to how well we can assess and respond to risk, given the uncertainty that faces us at any given point in time. This episode brings the discipline of risk management to life, with a number of examples that take the mystery out of the subject. 01 Sep 2020 | Steadying the Ship: Following an incompetent predecessor | 00:16:26
Episode #105 // Sometimes, you come into a new leadership role where the team you take over is broken. This happens with surprising regularity. Why? Because there’s a strong correlation between poor culture, poor performance, and poor leadership. We know that great leaders are in short supply, and the role models we look towards don’t necessarily show us how to improve. So how do you pick up the pieces after a poor leader has left? 02 Mar 2021 | The Emotional Toll of Leadership: Successful self-management | 00:20:49
Episode #131 // I run into leaders all the time who struggle with the personal impact that a leadership role has on their lives. It can be emotionally draining, and it can have far reaching impacts through every aspect of their lives. To be a successful leader in the longer term, and at the most senior levels, you first have to learn how to manage yourself. As they say during the airline safety briefings, “if oxygen is required, fit your own mask first before assisting others”. Strong leaders are strong people - strong enough to shoulder the duty of care that comes with a leadership career, and equipped to help others develop. This week, we look at the common types of fallout that many leaders experience, and provide seven practical tips for dealing with the emotional toll of leadership. We've also created a FREE PDF downloadable summary that wraps this all up in a nice bow for you, which you can download at www.yourceomentor.com/episode131 Hosted on Acast. 08 Oct 2019 | Imposter Syndrome and Other Dilemmas: Q&A with Marty | 00:19:47
Episode #58 // This week, Em and I take on a few great questions that appear to keep coming up regularly for our listeners! (0:55) The first question we tackle is from Stephanie, who is about to inherit a team member that is known company wide as an under performer (and quite frankly, pisses a lot of people off!), but her boss really likes this team member and doesn’t seem to see her faults. We help Stephanie work out what to do and how to manage both the under performer AND her boss. (6:35) Secondly, we answer Mike’s question which is an absolute cracker - how to deal with imposter syndrome. I get pretty deep in this one, and it’s a topic I haven’t spoken about very much, so I really hope it’s valuable. (12:50) We end with a great question from Pete, who asks us to address how to implement initiatives that have been agreed on in strategic planning sessions. So often great ideas come out of planning sessions, but then 6 months down the track no movement has been made because everyone is getting on with their standard day to day activities. If this resonates with you, you’ll get a lot of value out of my answer. If you’ve got a question that you’d like us to cover in the podcast, email it through to us at emma@yourceomentor.com, we’d love to hear from you! 18 Jun 2019 | First, Create Value: Developing the right leadership mindset | 00:18:55
Episode #42 // Realising that value is the fundamental building block of leadership, business, and in fact, all human endeavour, is a critical mind shift for a leader. If we could actually do this, it would potentially lead us to do very different things when we turn up each day to lead our people. This episode covers off a few pointed examples of what value looks like (and doesn’t look like) to get your creative juices flowing. Hear about the value v price paradox, total cost of ownership, the time value of money, and the key economic concepts of specialisation of labour and comparative advantage. It all begins with value, and this is the lens a leader must look through. Doors have now opened for our 7-week online leadership program, Leadership Beyond the Theory! 04 Sep 2018 | Respect Before Popularity: Letting go of the need to be liked | 00:16:47
Episode #1 // Needing to be liked is a symptom of a deeper issue - conflict aversion. This affects everything you do as a leader. How would you know if you, or your people, had a problem with this? Overcoming it is key to any successful leader’s career. On today’s show, we’re looking at why letting go of the need to be liked is critical for your success as a leader. I love talking about this, because it's so closely tied to one of my favourite career killers; the inability to handle conflict. In this episode we'll cover:

11 Sep 2018 | Building a High Performing Team: Weak team = poor results | 00:16:20
Episode #2 // If you want to be successful as a senior leader, you first have to build a team of successful individuals. A key part of this is recognising when someone is not going to be successful in their current role, and freeing them up to be successful in another organisation. 30 Oct 2018 | How to give your boss feedback & maintain your mojo: Q&A with Marty | 00:19:40
Episode #9 // This episode is going to be just a little different to our normal format! We've had a lot of really great feedback on the podcast and quite a few questions from listeners who either want us to do deep dives or look into a specific issue that they're having. I thought we'd turn this into a Q&A episode, where I can answer a couple of these questions for you. We love getting feedback from you, so if there's something that has come up for you this week or anything that you'd like some advice on, let us know and we'll record an episode on it for you. To help me with this Q&A segment, so that I wasn’t asking myself the questions, our producer and the other half of Your CEO Mentor, Em, joined me. In this episode, we discuss two questions:
We’ll cover a bunch of easy to implement tips and strategies that address the above questions and to make life even easier for you, we’ve put them in a PDF for you to download at www.yourceomentor.com/episode9! That way you can keep them on hand to reference later when you are stuck in a rut or need to have a tough talk with your boss. We’d love to know what you thought of the format of this episode, and if you’d like us to answer any of your questions, so please email us at hello@yourceomentor.com, and we’ll either reply with an answer to work it into one of the upcoming episodes! Episode #129 // INTERVIEW In today's podcast, I talk about the 'Executive Breakthrough' with Michelle Foley, Chief Customer Officer at The Arnott's Group. Michelle has been with The Arnott’s Group for over 17 years now, and knows the company intimately. The iconic Aussie brand that brings us Tim Tam cookies and Jatz crackers is now going through some change, and Michelle is one of the key executives guiding the company through its next phase. In this exclusive pre-recorded interview, Michelle shares her tactics for striking a balance between being a cheerleader for your people, and still being driven by results. She takes a deep dive into building competitive advantage, the work life juggle, and the legacy she wants to leave. This is a live event interview recording, so the audio quality isn't as sharp as usual, but the content is absolute gold so I really hope you enjoy this change in format! // Leadership Beyond the Theory is now taking enrolments for the March 2021 cohort! 22 Jan 2019 | Education Vs. Experience: Balancing your toolkit | 00:16:40
Episode #21 // Formal and informal education plays a critical role in any leader's development. Having said that, we need to be realistic about the role that education plays in our career paths and ensure that our experience and achievements are commensurate with our qualifications. Not all education is equal! When I talk about education, I'm going to completely ignore the realm of specific competency certifications. So that's things like undergraduate disciplines (law, architecture, commerce etc.) and professional certifications or tickets required by tradespeople to certify their competencies. So I start this episode talking about why education is so important, and the different types of education I’ll be referring to. I’ll then cover off:
This episode should give you a really good understanding of where you’re at, and get your brain working on where you want to go and the types of education you think you’re missing in your toolkit. Em and I created a great little quiz that should help you figure out which professional development option is best for you this year, so spend 30 seconds doing it here at www.yourceomentor.com/quiz and find out what your education path could look like this year. To further support this, if you’ve got a program or course that you’d like your organisation to pay for, but you’re not sure how to discuss it with your boss, we created a really simple business case to help you put it together, including a full email script! You can download the free business case here at www.yourceomentor.com/businesscase I’d love to hear if this has helped you choose an education path, and what your thoughts are on education vs. experience from your personal journey, so please send me an email to hello@yourceomentor.com with your thoughts! 01 Jan 2019 | What will you do as a leader in 2019? Setting yourself up for success | 00:15:51
Episode #18 // As the New Year's hangover subsides, we need to start thinking about what we're going to make happen in 2019, and it is absolutely up to us to make it happen. For ourselves, for our team and for our organisations. So in today’s episode, the first of the year, I’m going to start by talking about why New Year's resolutions don't work - so I hope you made all those yesterday, because today's the 2nd, you can forget about those and move on! From there, I’ll cover: • Why having a great year is all about setting up better habits - I’ll give you some examples of the habits I practice in my life • Why paying attention to what you’re doing, is going to make the difference between reaching your goals, and not • Some questions to help you reflect on where you’re going, both long term and short term • A technique that I use with senior leaders that is extremely powerful in working out what these goals are (this is the gold of this episode, and you’ll want to spend some time on this before you head back to work!) • Why modelling what it looks like to take personal accountability for your growth as a leader is so important • How you can hold yourself to account and actually achieve the things you have committed to for 2019 • The free downloadable for this week is the Five Steps for Setting Yourself up for Success in 2019, which you can download at www.yourceomentor.com/episode18 - I encourage you to download this and spend an hour or two with a pen and paper, working through these questions and getting your plan really clear, so that you can deliver on it throughout the year I also talk about Leadership Beyond the Theory, our 7-week online leadership program that is kicking off in February. If you know that 2019 is your year to accelerate your leadership skills and become a leader who stands out from the pack, I strongly recommend getting on the waitlist for the program. We’re only taking limited entries for the February cohort, and it won’t open again until July, so head to www.yourceomentor.com/program to work out if it’s a good fit for you. I am really looking forward to 2019. It's going to be an incredible year. I'm going to be riding shotgun with you on your journey all the way through. Em and I will continue to release a podcast episode every Wednesday morning, and we're going to continue to deal with the issues that we think are most going to be able to improve your leadership performance - with some help from your fantastic listener questions of course! As always, if you're enjoying this podcast series, please share it with your leadership network, because we want to reach as many leaders as possible, and help them through their leadership journey. I’d love to know what you thought of the tips and strategies that I covered in this episode, and if you’ve got any strategies of your own that you use in the new year to get yourself on track for success! 15 Jan 2019 | Make Great Decisions: Getting the most out of your team | 00:17:07
Episode #20 // There are so many factors to making great decisions. Some of these factors are technical and analytical, but many are based on your leadership skill. In today’s episode, we deal with the fundamental question of how to get the most from your people, to enhance and improve your decision making capability. I start this episode by asking the question, ‘Why all the fuss about diversity and inclusion?’ From there I go on to cover:
There are so many great gems in this episode! Most of the strategies I talk through require you to step outside your comfort zone and reflect honestly on your behaviour, but if you can do this, you’ll be able to create a culture of confidence and speed in decision making. If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, review and subscribe to the podcast - it means a lot to us and it gives us an idea of what you are getting the most value from, so that we can make more of it! 08 Dec 2020 | Change Fatigue: Is it a thing? | 00:18:24
Episode #119 // A lot of leaders say that their organisation is suffering from “change fatigue". Although there are no doubt many impacts from the seemingly endless list of change initiatives that organisations roll out, is change fatigue really a thing? Maybe it’s simply an inevitable part of life in a fast-paced business environment. But the problem with using cliches like ‘change fatigue’ is that they can lead us to overlook the role that our own leadership behaviours play. What’s the difference between change fatigue, and change resistance? Has Covid changed all of this? And what could we do differently to bring some sense and order to our change initiatives, while protecting our people from the most damaging side-effects? We've also put together a really handy free PDF downloadable to summarise the key takeaways from the episode, which you can download from our website www.yourceomentor.com/episode119 Hosted on Acast. 11 Dec 2018 | Stranded By The Boss: Promotion without support and training | 00:16:38
Episode #15 // I’ve got to say, we get some seriously great listener questions every week! When we started the podcast we were coming up with our own topics, and now we get so many questions, that we get to make what you guys want and need to hear - which was our ultimate goal of the podcast from day one! The question I'm answering today is no different, in fact we liked it so much we moved this episode up the priority order as I suspect this is something that happens far more frequently than we might imagine. Listener James asked: "In a recent leadership transition from individual contributor to management, I was tasked with delivering tasks above my competency and was under supported in acquiring these skills, resulting in damage to my career brand. When acting in a new level, how do you ensure a safe learning approach and don't damage your reputation?” A cracking question James, and first of all I want you to know - you’re not alone! I’m going to answer this question by covering the below:
Now I’m going to make a pretty educated guess and say that because you’re listening to this podcast, you’re already going down the self development path, however I hope this gives you clarity on what you need to focus on, and how to move yourself forward, even if you’ve been stranded by your boss! 24 Sep 2019 | Dealing with Change Resistance: You will have to shoot a hostage | 00:18:03
Episode #56 // For a leader, trying to shift a culture, improve performance, or lift the standard of a team is fraught with danger. Ideally, everyone would recognise the necessity for change, the benefits to be gained, and the logic of the plan. They would then get behind you with their unequivocal support. In reality, this is not how the world works. So what do you do when the change management frameworks and theories cease to work, due to the entrenched change resistance of a handful of your people? I have chosen a rather graphic expression for this - shoot a hostage (not literally, of course!) - because I need to get your attention. If you can’t shut down the passive aggressive resistance that some people deploy, all the change experts and process frameworks in the world won’t help you. Remember, not changing is NOT an option! 01 Oct 2019 | Challenge, Coach, Confront: The leader's basic toolkit | 00:16:38
Episode #57 // I often talk about the hard work of leadership as being the process of challenging, coaching and confronting your people. I had quite a few questions from our last Leadership Beyond the Theory cohort asking to explore this in more depth, so this episode takes a closer look at how it works. If you want to learn how to set up each phase, and use this approach to get the best results possible from your people, you need to understand a few of the basic concepts in this framework. The ability to challenge, coach, and confront - confidently and competently - has a huge impact on individual and team performance. You’ll need to master this if you have any aspirations of being a great leader. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
17 Dec 2019 | The Price of Leadership Weakness: Your people suffer most | 00:18:16
Episode #68 // Strong leadership is rare, but incredibly valuable to people and organisations. Unfortunately, with the amount of superficial, feel-good leadership content being peddled these days, you could be forgiven for thinking quite the opposite. For many, leadership has deteriorated into a quest to ‘make people happy’. Many leaders then begin to believe their own bullish!t. They misinterpret superficial contentment as productivity, and limited achievement in an undemanding environment as high performance. This episode contrasts strong and weak leaders, exposing the high price of leadership weakness. To take your learnings on this topic even further, download the 'Strong V. Weak Leader Checklist' that I've put together at www.yourceomentor.com/episode68. Are you a strong leader, or a weak leader? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
23 Mar 2021 | Being “More Strategic”: Whatever THAT means! | 00:16:08
Episode #134 // Have you ever been told that you need to be “more strategic”? t can come as part of the dreaded post-interview feedback, when you find out that you haven’t got the job, or in a talent management discussion when your boss tells you that you aren’t seen as someone who might rise to the next level. Telling someone that they need to be more strategic means… well, nothing! This episode explores what your boss really means when she says “you need to be more strategic”, and I give my 6 top tips for becoming more strategic (with some work and commitment, over time). I've put these 6 tips into a FREE downloadable PDF so that you can keep it on hand to reference at any time! Head to www.yourceomentor.com/episode134 to get your hands on it! Hosted on Acast. 30 Mar 2021 | When Empathy Becomes Sympathy: What’s the difference? | 00:18:28
Episode #135 // Is there such a thing as “too much empathy”? Despite what many pundits say, I believe that there’s a place for almost limitless empathy in a leader. The more you have, the better you’ll be able to lead your people. The risk is that weak leaders often allow their empathy to devolve into sympathy, which is a very different thing. If you combine empathy with the right leadership behaviours - strength of character and uncompromising standards - it will build the foundations for everything you need to do as a leader. In this episode, I take a critical look at the nexus between empathy and sympathy. If you’re aware of this distinction, you’re more likely to resist the temptation to become a weak leader who rationalises, avoids, and freezes when faced with difficult choices. Hosted on Acast. 12 Feb 2019 | Building Organisational Capability Part 2: Making it part of your culture | 00:21:13
Episode #24 // Did you listen to last week’s episode? If you haven’t, it’s well worth the 17 minutes to listen to it - it’s part 1 of Building Organisational Capability and it will give you a much better understanding of this episode! Today we’re onto Part 2: How do you build capability into your organisation and culture? We’re going to carry on from last week’s episode, by talking about how to build a competitive advantage into our culture - one of the toughest things to do. So I’ll start with a very short recap on last week's episode (remember our favourite acronym, PROFIT?), then I’ll cover the following:
The question on building organisational capability from our keen listener in Bucharest, Radu, has been quite challenging for me to answer, to be honest. I found it quite difficult to take such a vast and complex topic, and simplify it sufficiently to make it useful in a couple of short podcast episodes, so please feel free to let me know how you think I did. Send me an email (hello@yourceomentor.com), and pass this on to anyone you think who could benefit from delving into this topic! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
05 May 2020 | Rolling your sleeves up: Is this leading from the front? | 00:17:35
Episode #88 // It’s difficult to lead properly or act at a more strategic level, if your boss expects you to have a very hands-on component to your role. Some larger organisations these days seem desperate to become more entrepreneurial, and to ‘transform’. To do this, they are trying to mimic start ups. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all be tech unicorns?! What it means in practice, though, is that people in senior leadership positions are expected to roll their sleeves up and work alongside their teams, buried in the detail. We cover a lot of ground in this episode, from innovation theory, to micromanagement, to what it really means to lead from the front. Hosted on Acast. 05 Mar 2019 | Unleashing the Power of your People: How empowerment and support drive results | 00:16:58
Episode #27 // This week's episode is a de facto part 2 of episode 19 Execution for Results, so if you haven’t listened to that one yet I highly recommend doing it before you get stuck into this one! It focuses on how single point accountability is the most critical factor in being able to successfully execute on your plans, and sets the ground work for where we’re going today with Unleashing the Power of your People. This episode is all about empowerment, which is the flip side of the accountability coin. Accountability and empowerment should be inseparable, but often leaders don't understand that. Let's face it, execution is tough, but there are a few secrets that aren't often spoken about. So, I’m going to unpack those today! In this episode I start with a quick flyover the top of what accountability is as a refresher, and then I’ll cover the following:
This episode should create at least one ‘pie in the face’ moment for you, but I’m pretty confident that you’ll reflect on these and realise that there are quite few that could use your attention! You can use this episode to first evaluate your team and what you actually practice as a leader, and then rank which of these elements you should start implementing in order of where you believe the most value will come from. I would love to hear what you thought of this episode, and whether it enabled you to see your culture and team in a different light, so please send me your feedback at hello@yourceomentor.com. 21 Apr 2020 | The Silver Lining on the Pandemic: Long term positives from COVID-19 | 00:15:31
Episode #86 // Although we are still in lockdown mode in many parts of the world to stem the tide of the COVID-19 pandemic, we can start to look at the long term benefits that we are likely to see when we come through the other side. Indisputably, there is incredible pain for some, uncertainty for others, and for all of us, a change in how we view our world. But, eventually, we’ll emerge better for the experience (as humans have done over centuries). It’s now fast approaching the time when leaders should think about doing what they have signed up to do - to accept the cold hard facts for what they are, and work out how to take people beyond that, calmly and confidently, so that value emerges from this crisis. Episode #52 // Today is our first birthday! Episode 52 marks one year of weekly No Bullsh!t Leadership podcasts. So Em and I wanted to take the opportunity this week to reflect on the year, and give our listeners a little insight into the origins of the podcast, and where we are taking it. In this episode we have an informal chat to expose some of the key decisions that led to the establishment of Your CEO Mentor, and the creation of the podcast. In lessons for any business, big or small, we talk about the role that purpose plays for us, we explore the way consumption of information is changing in a digital world, and we let you in on some of the key growth trends of the podcast. Episode #136 // How do you know when it’s time to leave an organisation? Like almost every question in leadership, the answer is - it depends. Every situation is completely different, and only you know the factors that affect you: the workplace culture, your personal circumstances, the impact your boss has on you, and your ultimate career aspirations. But wouldn’t it be great to have a framework that could help you make smart decisions whenever you face a career dilemma?! Who is committed to coming out the other side better for the experience? This episode illuminates the road to true resilience, as we tap into the experiences of those who’ve come before us. 07 Sep 2021 | The Blame Game: It’s not me, it’s you! | 00:19:32
Episode #158 // Blaming others when something doesn’t go to plan is one of the most insidious (and unfortunately, most common) leadership behaviors. Culturally, this is a cancer that has to be eradicated. When a leader tolerates the blame game as a part of the performance evaluation cycle, excuses become the norm, and organizational politics finds fertile ground. In this episode, I look at how the blame game plays out in politics and business, and I revisit an old podcast episode that’s playing out in the US courts at the moment. I also offer some rules of thumb to ensure that you don’t fall into the trap of either blaming others, or allowing your people to shirk their accountability when they don’t deliver on their commitments. 29 Sep 2020 | Servant Leadership: Does it work? | 00:20:27
Episode #109 // The concept of “Servant Leadership” was first formulated by Robert Geenleaf 50 years ago, most likely as a reaction to the command-and-control leadership style of corporate America in the 1950s and 1960s. Servant Leadership has a lot going for it. Putting the focus on the growth and well-being of the individual, and using this as a means to achieve organisational outcomes is indeed compelling. And despite the fact that there is little empirical research to support the hypothesis, a number of successful companies swear by this approach. Join me as I unpick the key elements of servant leadership, explore the potential downside of adopting it as an overall style, and have a crack at cherry-picking the best features to help us improve and expand our existing leadership repertoire. Link reference: Episode #5 Using Power Wisely: Why how we get results actually matters // We are on a mission to hit 1 million listens by the 31st December 2020. We had such a cracking conversation that I wanted to get him on our podcast, so that he can share his wisdom with you! Jacob is a 4 x best-selling author, speaker and futurist. 02 Nov 2021 | Don’t Mollycoddle Your People: They’re Paid to do a Job | 00:21:31
Episode #166 // Debate is raging about the merits of remote work versus on-site colocation, exposing some real issues for leaders. One of the lighter discussions is on whether people should be allowed to turn their cameras off during Zoom meetings. This has generated some interesting debate in the wake of a research study published recently in the Journal of Applied Psychology. I released an episode a couple of months ago that deals with a few of these types of issues — Ep.154 Return to Work Rules — in which I developed a framework to guide you through the decision-making process. In this episode, I go a little deeper into some of the ways these issues can affect you and your people. I address the Zoom question, in typical “No Bullsh!t” fashion; I give a comprehensive example of what can happen when you let your people take on an air of entitlement; and I give you some rules of thumb for delivering the best outcome for your organization, while still maintaining critical relationships with your people. 09 Nov 2021 | Getting Ahead of the Next Crisis: An ounce of prevention | 00:15:27
Episode #167 // We receive a lot of questions about resilience, and we’ve produced several episodes over the last three years that offer some guidance for how to cope when things are tough. While still on the resilience theme, the focus of today’s episode is slightly different, as we explore what happens when teams become addicted to crisis. Well-run teams and businesses don’t wait for a crisis to occur, and then spring into action. Quite the opposite: they mitigate risks proactively, and avoid the types of scenarios that many other companies fall prey to. It’s important to get on the front foot, and preemptively deal with the risks that could otherwise plunge your team into crisis, so I give you my five hot tips for getting ahead of the next crisis (available as a free PDF downloadable at www.yourceomentor.com/episode167). 16 Nov 2021 | Political Sabotage at Work: Surviving the shark tank | 00:17:27
Episode #168 // Politics is no fun. It can undo you, even if you’re operating with good intent, and doing everything right. On one level, politics can be seen simply as the process of influencing—but on another it can be a devious, divisive, and manipulative tool, used by individuals to further their own power and control. If allowed to fester, this creates a toxic culture, which can ultimately ruin your company. During my corporate career, I was almost brought undone a few times by political attacks that I didn’t see coming… so, today is all about how to recognize and navigate politics, without buying into the political game yourself. I even get a little help from Niccolo Machiavelli, the father of political strategy, who brings a layer of understanding to the numerous scars I’ve acquired! Hosted on Acast. Episode #169 // Even after the disruption of the last 18 months, I still see many companies weighed down by a perfectionistic culture. If we’ve learned nothing else from the Covid experience, it’s that we can move so much faster than we initially think we can—but to do so takes a commitment to the principle of excellence over perfection. What will it take to conquer our need for perfectionism and instead, to adopt an achievement orientation? In this episode, I explore why the pursuit of perfection is not as noble as it might first appear, and expose the six key performance elements that are stymied by perfectionism. Hosted on Acast. 30 Nov 2021 | Epic Team Building Fails: It’s hard not to be cynical | 00:16:59
Episode #170 // This week, we’re taking a look at team building exercises. They come in all different shapes, sizes and colors… some are useful, some are borderline disastrous! During my corporate career, I had my fair share of both. So, do we need to reevaluate our commitment to the annual off-site meeting? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? Does smashing each other with paintballs or abseiling down a cliff face actually bring us closer together? In this episode I give an insight into my own team building fails, cover off the most common problems to be aware of, and offer some suggestions for building team morale without needing to leave the safety of your own office! You want everyone to enjoy the celebration appropriately, and at the same time, feel as safe and respected as they do in their normal work environment.
In this Q&A episode we cover all things Christmas parties, from venues to fancy dress to alcohol-free zones...and everything in between. 14 Dec 2021 | Stop Doing Your People’s Work: Lead THEM to do it | 00:16:04
Episode #172 // When one of my articles for Harvard Business Review blew up recently on social media, we decided to make it more accessible to our community of No Bullsh!t Leaders by turning it into a podcast episode. And because I don’t have a word limit here, I can expand it out and offer examples until my heart’s content! When you first move into a leadership role, it’s easy to develop bad habits… one of those habits is over-functioning for your people: doing their work for them. We think we’re doing it for all the right reasons and it’s easy to rationalize. But it’s also the surest way to weaken your team, limit its potential, and constrain its culture. In this episode I briefly touch upon the transition from individual contributor to people leader, explore why we love to do our people’s work for them, and give you three surefire ways to build the discipline to let your people do their jobs, without your well-meaning but unhelpful intervention! To make this episode even more valuable for you, I've put the key points into a *free* PDF resource, '3 Failsafe Ways to Stay Out of Your People's Work' which you can download at https://www.yourceomentor.com/episode172 Hosted on Acast. 21 Dec 2021 | Inside Life at the Top: Paul Scurrah Interview | 00:49:06
Episode #173 // Today we bring you an in-depth interview with Paul Scurrah. Paul is the CEO and Managing Director of rail freight business Pacific National. When we recorded the interview almost 12 moths ago, Paul had just finished his stint as CEO of Australia’s second-largest airline, Virgin Australia, which had undergone a tumultuous change of ownership on the back of the covid pandemic. Given that it’s only a couple of days before Christmas, we thought this would be a nice free-flowing discussion for you to sink into as you reminisce about the year that was! We cover why the airline industry is so tough, yet still so attractive… We talk culture, politics, and crisis management. We talk about how to win the customer, and we even talk about one of Paul’s leadership roles in an organization that wasn’t winning. Wishing you a very happy and safe holiday from the Your CEO Mentor team! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode #174 // As we traditionally do at Christmas time, we take a look back on our year of podcast episodes. Em and I have picked our favorites for you to go back and listen to while you’re enjoying some downtime in the New Year. 2021 has been a big year for Your CEO Mentor! Amongst other things, the No Bullsh!t Leadership podcast recently reached 2 million downloads. That translates into a whole lot of impact for the leaders in more than 100 countries who have tuned in. Once again, to break up the Marty monologues, we had a bunch of Q&As where Em hit me with some of the best listener questions we received. We also introduced a handful of interviews for the first time. NHL legend, Luc Robitaille; global jewelry mogul, Samantha Wills; and leadership futurist, Jacob Morgan each brought another dimension to the show. Whether you enjoy the current affairs commentaries, the practical ‘how to’s, or the straight no bullsh!t talking, there’s a perfect episode in the annual wrap for you! Hosted on Acast. 11 Jan 2022 | When You Don’t Get the Job: What next? | 00:16:20
Episode #176 // Apart from the multitude of listener questions on leadership and business that we get at Your CEO Mentor each week, we also field quite a few seeking career guidance. The question we deal with in this episode is, “What should I do when I don't get the job that I thought I was certain to get?” To come up with an answer, I went back through the No Bullsh!t Leadership catalogue. When I realized how much relevant content we’ve already produced, I decided to bring together this broad range of concepts into a cohesive framework. Every person, every career, and every situation is unique, but if you adapt and apply the principles and tools in this episode, you’ll find you have a comprehensive guide for managing your career under any type of boss, in any company, under any circumstances. 18 Jan 2022 | The Billable Hours Dilemma: Breaking the paradigm | 00:21:50
Episode #177 // In the billable hours world, supplier companies deliver services to client companies in an exchange of time for money. It’s the dominant business model in legal, accounting, and consulting firms. This presents a wonderful opportunity for organizations to leverage expertise and capability that they don’t possess themselves. But it also comes with its own peculiar issues and risks, which can erode or negate any potential value. In this episode, I explore the billable hours model from both sides of the equation. Why is it so hard for service providers to think long term? What are the ‘traps for young players’ when engaging service firms to deliver work on a time and materials basis? And what can you do to increase the likelihood of extracting real value from any engagement? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
25 Jan 2022 | Visibility in a Remote World: Appearances can be deceiving | 00:21:44
Episode #178 // Since the pandemic forced us into remote working, many people have turned their work day into performance art. They now pursue the goal of appearing to be busy, rather than actually delivering value-adding results. The activity becomes the end, rather than the means to an end. Although this is nothing new (there have always been people who appear to be busy, while achieving little), it has definitely become harder for leaders to identify and deal with than it was in the past. How can you tell when someone is replacing real work with demonstrations of their own busyness? We’d all like to think that we’re able to spot this behavior a mile away, but it’s sometimes a little more complicated than we might imagine. This episode is all about identifying and managing the people on your team who are potential Oscar nominees for the award of “Best Performance in a Working Role”. 01 Feb 2022 | Survival of the Fittest: Is it the path to high performance? | 00:25:57
Episode #179 // While enjoying my holiday Netflix binge, I watched the documentary series, Formula 1: Drive to Survive. While I’m not a fan of motor sports, I found the series unbelievably compelling. There are countless lessons to be taken from the series about leadership, high-performing teams, organizational culture, and the consequences of the extreme pressure that comes with performing at the absolute highest levels. In this episode, I unpick the cultural dynamics of F1 racing portrayed in the documentary, both good and bad. How does capital investment affect the teams? Do the team principals callously discard underperformers? How does nepotism affect performance? And does the F1 ethos allow a culture of bullying and harassment to flourish in some of the teams? 08 Feb 2022 | The Family Culture: Is it a good thing? | 00:20:24
Episode #180 // I’ve heard many leaders in my time making statements about their team being “more like a family” than anything else (as if that’s a good thing)! Recently, the CEO of one of the largest companies on the Toronto Stock Exchange railed against the company’s decline into a family culture. He sent a lengthy memo to his employees explaining exactly why this was a problem…and when it was leaked it caused quite a stir! In this episode, I unpick the mystique of family culture. What are the distinguishing features of a family culture? How do you incorporate some of the positive elements of the family culture, without also suffering the destructive elements it inevitably brings? And is it even possible to get high performance from a family culture? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

22 Feb 2022 | What is Strong Leadership? Taking people where they ought to be | 00:20:15
Episode #182 // Almost all of the content that we produce on the No Bullsh!t Leadership podcast is designed to help you become a stronger leader. But what is ‘strong leadership’? How would you know if you were being strong enough, without crossing the line into tough, controlling, or autocratic leadership? This episode delves into the detail of what defines strong leadership. What are the observable characteristics of the strong leader? Your primary objective as a leader is to deliver value—to produce results, and maximize the use of the resources that your organization has entrusted to you. How do you do that in a compassionate, empathetic, and considerate manner, without succumbing to the temptation simply to please the people who are closest to you? Hosted on Acast. 01 Mar 2022 | Mentors, Coaches, and Trusted Advisors: What’s the difference? | 00:22:47
Episode #183 // There’s an inordinate number of passionate, dedicated people all over the world who coach, mentor, and advise others. Many do this as part and parcel of their day-to-day roles as leaders, but some go even further to actually make it their career. So what’s the difference between coaching and mentoring? What are the pros and cons of each? How about a trusted advisor? If you’re coaching or mentoring others, how would you know when to deploy different techniques and approaches? In this episode, I unravel the mystery of the different types of advisors, with a particular focus on external mentors and paid coaches. Even as an individual contributor it’s not a good look… but as a leader it can be almost impossible to get away with. In this Q&A, Em and I discuss the difficulties of maintaining your leadership mojo when you aren’t aligned to your organization’s direction—and, of course, we offer some practical tips for overcoming the problem. 15 Mar 2022 | The Mental Health Minefield: How do you lead? | 00:21:12
Episode 185 // TW. Today’s episode is about mental health in the workplace, so if you are currently struggling with trauma or any other mental health-related issue, I will be discussing my perspective on this topic, hopefully to educate and enlighten leaders who are struggling with it. It may be triggering for some people. I am not a doctor or mental health expert, I’m just speaking from my own experiences. If you need someone to talk to, please Google your local mental health hotline and connect with a professional who can help. // There’s an ever-increasing number of articles, blogs, and podcasts talking about the human cost of the Covid pandemic, in particular its impact on people’s mental health. This is a really sensitive topic, but it’s an area where your leadership skills are going to be challenged repeatedly. Some of the trickiest situations for leaders arise when an employee who’s struggling with personal issues isn’t performing their job to the required standard. How much latitude should you give to someone who’s having trouble functioning at work due to personal struggles and challenges? And should you always insist that people meet the standards of performance and behavior that are so critical in building a constructive, high-performance culture? In this episode, I go out on a limb to give you some guidance on how to approach these rather delicate situations. // ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES FACING LEADERS EVERYWHERE IS BURNOUT 🔥😰McKinsey estimates that the cost of burnout, in turnover and lost productivity, is $322 billion annually. This can be devastating, not just from a personal perspective, but also for team performance! 29 Mar 2022 | Avoiding Burnout: Streamlining your leadership approach | 00:21:35
Episode 187 // In a recent episode, we explored the continuing decline in mental health, and how it can affect a leader’s role. It’s a sensitive topic, and if this were the only disruptive trend we were experiencing, that would be enough to add to the tremendous load that leaders already carry.
But there are plenty of other issues to contend with: pandemic uncertainty… physical dislocation of people and teams… changes in societal standards and expectations…
This may explain, at least to some extent, the ever-increasing number of leaders suffering from burnout. If leaders can’t remain healthy, positive, and productive in these tumultuous times, then what chance does the rest of the population have?
This episode gives some key insights into the underlying causes of burnout, and presents a solution that can be found only through improving and streamlining your leadership skills. 05 Apr 2022 | It’s Hard To Say Sorry: So when should you? | 00:22:18
Episode 188 // People make mistakes all the time, and leaders are people! More often than not, when a leader makes an honest mistake, everyone just moves on and leaves it behind with no fanfare or post mortem.
But there are times when it’s appropriate for a leader to stand up and say, “Hey, I got this wrong, and I’m sorry”.
Do this too much, and you can appear weak, ineffective, and indecisive. Do it too little, and you can seem arrogant, disconnected, and out of touch! To complicate matters further, it’s not always your choice to make!
In this episode, I examine the pressures facing leaders when they’re deciding whether or not it’s appropriate to say “sorry”, and I outline half a dozen likely scenarios you may find yourself in that require you to make this kind of judgment call. // Leadership Beyond the Theory is BACK! 👊 The most practical and comprehensive online leadership program that will take your leadership confidence, skills, and capability to BRAND NEW LEVELS 🔥 Learn more about the program and enrol at www.leadershipbeyondthetheory.com Class starts on Monday 11th April 2022, so save your spot now! 12 Apr 2022 | Successful Transformation: Is there such a thing? | 00:20:57
Episode #189 // The term 'Transformation' can mean a lot of different things. I’ve seen it used to describe everything from a new IT system, to a simple cost cutting exercise, right through to a complete change in strategic direction and organizational structure.
However it’s defined, and whatever you want to call it, the unfortunate truth is that your transformation is unlikely to succeed. A research report recently released by McKinsey suggests that most transformations fail to deliver anywhere near the benefits that are envisaged at the outset.
Whether you’re a CEO calling the shots by making critical decisions on transformation scope, or someone who leads a team further down the organizational hierarchy, there are things you can do to increase the likelihood that your next transformation is a success. 19 Apr 2022 | Leaving Space For People To Grow: Remembering Taylor Hawkins | 00:17:02
Episode #190 // After the recent untimely passing of Foo Fighters’ drummer, Taylor Hawkins, I came across an article in Rolling Stone magazine. It was Hawkins’ last live interview, and I was struck by a few incredible leadership lessons about fear of failure, strong leadership, and teamwork.
In today’s episode, I not only want to pay tribute to Taylor Hawkins (who was one of my favorite drummers), but also to take the learnings from the unexpected world of rock music to illustrate some behaviors and strategies that all leaders can learn from.
The opportunity that leaders have to create astonishing results by giving their people space to grow, and increasing their confidence to perform, is brought to life in the story of Hawkins and Dave Grohl, the Foo Fighters’ frontman. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
26 Apr 2022 | Are You a Hypocritical Leader? You may be surprised… | 00:17:58
Episode #191 // Many leaders inadvertently behave in a hypocritical way when they take a “do as I say, not as I do” approach. Sometimes, this is the result of a deep sense of entitlement in senior leaders, who are quite happy to set a standard for their people that they have no intention of observing themselves.
But many of us are simply oblivious to our own behaviors, and we aren’t in tune with what other people see. We genuinely think that we’re behaving in accordance with the standards we set for our team, but often this is no more than a breathtaking lack of self-awareness… and we use rationalization as a crutch.
This episode explores why it’s easy, even with the best intent, to sometimes come across as being hypocritical. How do you keep yourself honest, and what can you do to reduce the likelihood that your people will brand you as a hypocritical leader? Hosted on Acast. 03 May 2022 | Avoiding Common Biases: What really drives our decisions? | 00:22:32
Episode #192 // We frequently hear about cognitive biases, especially when it comes to discrimination on the basis of gender, race, and sexual orientation. But our inbuilt biases operate much more broadly than this, and they can have a disproportionate influence on the outcomes we experience if we don’t develop a keen awareness of them.
In this episode, I explore some of the biases that limit our self-awareness and affect our judgment, and even some that straight-up deceive us.
As you become more familiar and aware of what these biases are, and how they affect your thinking, it’s possible to avoid their most destructive consequences. And if you manage to tame the biases that drive your decisions, your people will massively benefit from your efforts! ———————— FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? 10 May 2022 | Navigating The Great Resignation: Q&A with Marty and Em | 00:19:45
Episode #193 // A lot of businesses are finding it extremely challenging to operate in the volatility of a hot labor market. Despite the hundreds of podcasts, blogs, and articles that are published daily about The Great Resignation, there doesn’t seem to be an oversupply of solutions (other than the vague notion that you need to focus on your people and keep them happy in order to retain them).
In many cases, “keep them happy” equates to “pay them more”. This can have significant consequences for many businesses, which are forced to either raise their prices, or cut their margins. It can be a pretty tricky game to play and, for many smaller businesses, you may find yourself one bad decision away from a death spiral.
In this Q&A episode, we answer a few listener questions that focus on specific aspects of the hot labor market. We cover the bonus culture, and people’s expectations for financial rewards; we look at the increasing number of situations where people who’ve left your business want to return; and we talk about how to leave the door open for your top performers if they do choose to leave. ———————— FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? 31 May 2022 | Virtue Signals Aren’t Enough: Leadership requires more | 00:17:24
Episode #196 // It may surprise you to learn that organizations across the globe spend over US $370 billion annually on leadership development programs. This doesn’t include the millions of other leadership resources that we tap into each day: books, podcasts, networking groups, websites, blogs, social media posts… the content is literally everywhere you turn.
But despite this, none of it seems to move the needle. Leadership appears to be in as poor a state as it’s ever been, and people continue to cite poor leadership as the biggest issue they face at work.
Why aren’t all these leadership development efforts making a difference? Some blame surely rests with our slide towards virtue-signaling. Leadership has become about publicly expressing opinions that demonstrate good character and moral superiority, as much as anything else.
But leadership is so much more… and your people know it!

07 Jun 2022 | Why Can’t We Be Friends? Navigating friendships as a leader | 00:21:26
Episode #197 // I first outlined one of my most important leadership philosophies in Ep.14: Friendly, But Not Friends. Since then, a few things have changed…
We’ve listened to over 1,000 leaders, who’ve taken our flagship program, Leadership Beyond the Theory; societal standards have changed (yes, believe it or not, in only 3 or 4 years); Covid has come and (sort-of) gone; and I’ve been challenged by many leaders who’ve told me that they completely disagree with my Friendly, Not Friends principle.
Despite all of this, I still firmly believe in the need for professional distance between a leader and her people. In this episode, I update and reboot this important topic! Every working relationship you develop will be different. But if you can manage to maintain professional distance, you’ll be able to lead your team more effectively, and your life will be a whole lot easier. ———————— FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? 14 Jun 2022 | Layoffs Are Back: Q&A with Marty and Em | 00:27:38
Episode #198 // The great resignation is in full swing, and this is causing a shortage of people in the labor market…which in turn, is pushing up wages…which in turn, is increasing the cost of doing business.
From the other side, the squeeze is coming in the form of higher inflation…which leads to higher input costs…which leads to companies raising their prices…which leads to reduced demand for their products and services.
These market forces are making it harder for companies to remain profitable. And so, the cost-cutting begins. Big tech companies like Netflix, Carvana, better.com and Peloton are laying off staff in their thousands as growth slows.
This affects people’s lives. Those who are laid off, and those leaders whose accountability it is to do the laying off, can be significantly affected by the experience.
In this Q&A episode, we look at layoffs from both sides, and give you some ideas for how to handle it, if you do happen to find yourself on either side of a layoff conversation! ———————— FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? 21 Jun 2022 | Employee Engagement: Is it the right measure? | 00:18:42
Episode #199 // In the last 20 years, employee engagement has become the dominant method of understanding and measuring job satisfaction. There are a number of well-worn engagement surveys, which have global reach and lots of historical data that can be used for benchmarking and statistical analysis.
Many companies run an annual engagement survey, and pay close attention to the results, as if it were a key predictor of people performance. Some even reward their leaders based on improvements to this simple metric. Although an engagement survey may give you a good indication of how your people are feeling, does it really tell you how well they’re performing?
In this episode, I dive into this a little deeper to see what the reality of employee engagement is, whether it really leads to better outcomes, and what other factors are likely to give you a picture of your people’s true performance! ———————— FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? 28 Jun 2022 | 5 Episodes That Every Leader Must Listen To! | 00:27:05
Episode #200 // When Em and I started the No Bullsh!t Leadership podcast in September 2018, we spent a lot of time thinking about how we would ensure that our message would stand out in the never-ending tsunami of leadership content. We wanted our content to be clear, no bullsh!t and practical. This might sound easy if you say it fast enough, but creating content about the complexities of navigating the workplace as a leader is incredibly difficult to do in 15-20 minutes without oversimplifying it or sounding as though we're offering a silver bullet! Over the years we've become better at doing this, but there are some episodes that stick out more than others. To celebrate our 200th episode, Em and I are going to talk you through the 5 episodes we believe every leader MUST listen to. If these are the only episodes you listen to out of the 200 we’ve produced, you’ll be far better off in your pursuit of exceptional leadership. 05 Jul 2022 | Finding Your Purpose: How important is it? | 00:19:56
Episode #201 // I recently came across two articles on the role that purpose plays in your career. The first, by Marcus Buckingham, proposed the idea that finding a career with purpose is actually a lie. The second, by Tom Rath, argued that without purpose, there will be negative consequences for your long-term prosperity, happiness, and wellbeing.
Which of these is true? Are both true to some extent?
It feels as though purpose has become a panacea—“Follow your purpose”, we’re told. These days, it almost seems as though pursuing anything other than your life’s true purpose is somehow frowned upon.
In this episode, I look at the role that purpose plays in your career, and what else might matter. I also give you some ideas for putting ‘purpose’ into perspective, so that your career can be fulfilling, no matter what. 12 Jul 2022 | Eliminating Selection Bias: Why is it so hard? | 00:20:17
Episode #202 // Despite the very vocal and public focus on Diversity & Inclusion in the last 10+ years, it still appears to be a huge struggle for most organizations. It seems that the inertia created by the entrenched structures, processes, and attitudes is way harder to overcome than anyone might have imagined.
When it comes to diversity, many countries, industries, and businesses have put rules in place to encourage speed of adoption, and to accelerate the rate of change… once again, this is clearly not working in most cases.
In the US, the National Football League (NFL) implemented something called The Rooney Rule almost 20 years ago. This rule was designed to eliminate selection bias against African American coaches in the sport, but it has recently come under severe criticism.
In this episode, I take a deep look at selection bias, and offer my seven hot tips for eliminating selection bias, and improving your hiring outcomes. 🚀 Want to read the episode in blog form and chat with me about the content? 19 Jul 2022 | Defending Against Disruptive Innovation: Capability is Everything | 00:22:50
Episode #203 // Episode #85 of the podcast addressed one of the most important (but often misunderstood) business fundamentals: “Strategy isn’t hard: don’t overcomplicate it”. It demystified some of the core elements of competitive strategy and, hopefully, it served to make strategy a little more accessible.
I’m now shifting the focus to look at disruptive innovation. How do you defend against something you often can’t predict or anticipate? How can you prepare for and respond to disruptive events?
Market disruptions don’t come very often but, when they do, they can have devastating effects, and severely damage your company’s market share and profitability!
In this episode, I unpick the different types of innovation, and look at some sensible strategies for combating disruption in your market. How do you build the cultural firewalls that will insulate you against the shocks that you won't see coming? ———————— FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? 26 Jul 2022 | The Big Leadership Moments: When real leaders step up | 00:17:35
Episode #204 // Adventurer and TV personality, Bear Grylls, (protagonist of the docuseries, Man Vs. Wild) said in an interview, “You have to come alive in the big moments... When it's NOT a big moment, you don't need to be front and centre, but when it's a big moment--BE THERE!”
That’s pretty powerful. Over the years, I’ve found it to be a defining characteristic of the best leaders I’ve seen. That’s when all the talk stops, and you get to see what people are really made of. Because you won’t see their true character until the big moment arrives.
We see examples in every area of life where some people step up in the big moments, while most people fade into the background, hoping not to be noticed.
The good news is that, wherever you are today, this is something you can learn… and it will really differentiate you as a strong leader, in whatever context you operate in! ———————— FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? 02 Aug 2022 | Leading in a Low-Accountability Culture: Q&A with Marty & Em | 00:23:15
Episode #205 // Every piece of content we produce focuses on the link between leadership and performance. Value creation is the name of the game, so knowing what value is in your context is a prerequisite to delivering it.
But, despite our laser-like focus, many of our podcast listeners work in organizations that have a very different view on performance. And many of those organizations reward people for not making waves, rather than rewarding them for making a difference.
No culture is perfect, and performance is always plotted on a continuum. But if you do find yourself on the lower end of the range, working in a low-accountability culture that isn’t focused on performance, it doesn’t mean you should fall back into the comfortable mediocrity of your peers.
In this Q&A episode we address this issue head on, and give you some tactics to use when the culture you’re working in doesn’t support you to do the leadership things that will make the most difference. ———————— FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? 09 Aug 2022 | It’s STILL Respect Before Popularity: An update on your favorite episode | 00:19:25
Episode #206 // The very first episode that we decided to lead out with on the No Bullsh!t Leadership podcast was Respect Before Popularity! We figured that, if we only ever released one episode, we wanted to expose leaders to this concept, above all others. And it turns out that it’s actually still our most popular episode.
So today, I want to revisit that very first episode, and give you an updated version that’s even more accessible… Let’s face it, my delivery in those early episodes was pretty sh!t :-))
But that aside, we’ve had an incredible number of leaders contact us to tell us how much of a difference the principle of respect before popularity has made to them, both personally and professionally.
In this episode, as well as recapping the original concepts, I take a deeper dive into the psychological and emotional drivers of conflict aversion, and bring a new perspective on what it takes to win respect. ———————— FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? 23 Apr 2019 | When It's Time For Someone To Go: Handling the most difficult conversations | 00:17:42
Episode #34 // Sometimes a leader has to let someone go, either because of the choices an individual makes around their behaviour and performance, or through no fault of their own when their role is made redundant. This episode deals with termination for performance reasons, and gives a brief but practical outline of these difficult situations. We start by making sure you understand the responsibility you carry as a leader to ensure that all your people perform to an acceptable standard; it’s all about what happens before you decide that someone has to go that really matters. Know “when” the right time is to make a significant decision like that, and our dozen ‘rules of thumb’ for handling these situations will give you a new-found confidence. Take this on board, and don’t be that leader who avoids making necessary decisions on under performers through fear, dread, or weakness. 16 Aug 2022 | Leadership Transparency: Are there limits? | 00:21:25
Episode #207 // Transparency in leadership is a huge topic! Virtually every leadership pundit on the planet will tell you what an important quality transparency is for a leader to possess. And they’d be right! But it isn’t black and white… there’s an incredible amount of nuance and judgment in this subject.
This episode looks at transparency from the macro level (companies and countries), right down to the day-to-day complexities you face in determining the right level of transparency to employ as a leader. It can be a lot trickier than you think!
Putting aside the big questions of ethics and confidentiality, you’ll need to make some judgment calls on the practical realities of transparency when leading large teams.
What’s the relationship between transparency and accountability? Between transparency and trust? 06 Sep 2022 | Managing Your Time and Energy: Master this, or burn out! | 00:21:31
Episode #210 // We still get a seemingly endless stream of questions from leaders who feel as though they’re heading towards burnout, and have very little idea about how to stop the decline.
This ultimately comes down to being able to manage your time and energy effectively. Often, burnout is a slow creep, and it just chips away at you over time until you realize you’re not functioning at the same pace, and achieving the same performance that you used to.
You get that jaded feeling… you lose your zest and enthusiasm, and find it increasingly more difficult to keep up the energy for your team. Days that used to feel effortless become a real chore, and then you feel guilty about not bringing your best for your people.
In this episode, I give you strategies in three distinct areas that you can use to manage your time and energy, and rebuild your enthusiasm for the job, regardless of how you feel about it at this moment! We've also put together a *free* PDF, A Leader's Time Audit, to help you make sure that you're only working on the things that really matter.
