On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, podcast Dan shares the story of harvesting his biggest buck to date and the amazing blood tracking adventure that followed. Even though the shot was back and did not instantly kill the buck, Dan's persistence paid off during the 2 day track job. The blood trail disappeared when heavy rain moved in and Dan was forced to grind search until dark. On a last ditch effort, Dan and a family friend went back to grind search the remainder of the farm. After grinding the first of the remaining ridges, the guys decided to head back down to where they found last blood. 2018 will go down as one of the most memorable hunting seasons for Eddie Johnson of Kansas. On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Travis Coulter of Kentucky shares a story about his father and a big velvet buck. The underlying topic of this episode is alcoholism and how it destroyed the life of a fellow hunter. Travis talks about going hunting with his father when he was a youngster until his drinking got so bad that his uncle had to step in and put him under his wing. Both Travis's uncle and father played their role building an outdoor foundation for Travis. Fast forward to 2019, alcohol finally caught up with his father and he suffered a major heart attack he was unable to recover from. The next year Travis bought a farm. And under a huge oak tree in the middle of an open field, Travis placed his fathers ashes along with a wooden cross. 2021 came and Travis decided to place an extension ladder in that oak tree that he planned to saddle hunt out of. On opening day, September 5th, Travis connected on a big velvet buck from that tree. He's convinced his father was there the whole time and helped him seal the deal on this buck! We continue Vortex Week with an amazing story about a group of guys who headed to Alaska for a once in a lifetime blacktail hunt. Mark, Sawyer, and Eric share the story of how the trip was planned, the logistic behind the trip like what gear they needed to take, how much of food to take, and where they planned to get their water from. It didn't take long for the guys to locate both deer and bear and put a game plan together for the upcoming days. But the hunt wasn't easy, the guys battle extremely wet conditions and fog for most of the hunt but were still able to find success. For most of us, Alaska seems like an impossible place to hunt, but the guys mention that the tags were over the counter and and for the most part affordable. Cameran shares the three year story that started in 2015 when the buck was a 2 year old and then in 2018 when he killed the buck as 5 year old. He tells Dan the story about in 2017 how he passed him at 20 yards as a 4 year old to kill a different buck. On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan connects with returning guest Mitch Schmidt about his days as a Alaskan fishing guide and a 2019 trip to Kansas that resulted in a booner on the 4th day. Mitch walks us through why he decided to head to Alaska and become a fishing guide and his day to day responsibilities at the lodge he works for. He talks about being a boat captain, flying in a float plane, and bear encounters while fishing with clients on the river. Then we transition back to whitetails as he breaks down his 2019 Kansas bowhunt on public land with one of his best hunting buddies.
