In this engaging conversation, Dan Johnson interviews Jim Shockey, a renowned outfitter and author, who shares insights into his life, adventures, and the complexities of modern hunting. Jim reflects on his experiences over the years, the challenges of organizing expeditions in today's world, and the significance of storytelling through writing. He discusses the importance of artifacts and history, as well as his desire to change perceptions about hunting and promote tolerance for different lifestyles. In this conversation, Jim Shockey discusses the complexities of infighting within the hunting community, the profound impact of personal loss, and the journey of caregiving for his late wife, Louise. He reflects on the lessons learned from grief, the importance of cherishing every moment, and how these experiences have shaped his perspective on life and relationships. Takeaways Jim Shockey emphasizes the privilege of reaching an older age. Writing a book requires distilling a lifetime of experiences into a coherent narrative. Books serve as a lasting legacy compared to transient media. Artifacts hold the spirit of their creators and tell stories of the past. Hunting is part of a natural cycle of life and death. Jim aims to change perceptions about hunting among non-hunters. The logistics of modern hunting expeditions have become increasingly complex. Storytelling through writing is a significant challenge and accomplishment. Cultural perspectives shape our understanding of right and wrong. Tolerance for different lifestyles is essential in today's diverse world. Infighting among hunters often stems from a desire to elevate oneself by denigrating others. The instinct to compete and assert dominance is deeply rooted in human nature. Personal loss can lead to profound insights about the fragility of life. Caregiving for a loved one with terminal illness can redefine one's purpose and priorities. Every moment spent with loved ones is a precious gift that should be cherished. Grief is a personal journey, and everyone copes in their own way. Living day to day, and appreciating each moment, is essential after loss. Memories of loved ones can bring joy rather than sorrow if viewed positively. Life is too short to waste on negativity or regret. Embracing life fully means recognizing its fragility and valuing every experience. ‍ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

28 Jun 2024The Impact of Drought, CWD, and EHD01:05:51
John Hudspeth discusses hunting in Oklahoma and Texas, including the recent increase in non-resident hunting prices in Oklahoma. He also talks about the challenges of hunting with a young child and the impact of weather conditions on deer populations. The conversation then shifts to the topic of chronic wasting disease (CWD) and Oklahoma's plan to release captive deer that are deemed CWD-resistant into the wild. The conversation revolves around Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and the proposed plan in Oklahoma to release deer that are resistant to CWD. The hosts discuss the ethics of charging people for these deer and whether it should be done for the greater good instead of for profit. They also question the effectiveness of using captive deer to solve the CWD problem and express concerns about the potential impact on the genetics of the deer population. The conversation touches on other topics such as the prevalence of CWD in Oklahoma, the lack of testing facilities, and the potential effects of agricultural chemicals on deer and the environment. Takeaways: Non-resident hunting prices in Oklahoma have increased, making it less affordable for out-of-state hunters. Hunting with a young child can be challenging, requiring shorter trips and more strategic planning. Weather conditions, such as droughts, can impact deer populations and antler growth. Oklahoma has a plan to release captive deer that are deemed CWD-resistant into the wild to combat chronic wasting disease. The plan to release deer resistant to CWD in Oklahoma raises ethical questions about charging people for these deer and whether it should be done for the greater good instead of for profit. Using captive deer to solve the CWD problem raises concerns about the potential impact on the genetics of the deer population. Dan chats with fellow Sportsmen's Nation podcaster Chad Ryker of the Backcountry Rookies about his jump in to big game western hunting.  The guys kick off the episode by talking about how Chad , an Indiana native, was introduced to the outdoors and how he put hunting to the side for a bit while in high school and after joining the Army after 9/11. As a fan of long range shooting, he ran in to a couple guys who were fans of western hunting... and this is where it all started.  This is an excellent episode that will have you thinking about giving a different style of hunting a try. Also, Backcountry Rookies is a podcast you should all listen to, full of information dedicated to those who want to enter the western hunting arena.   Nine Finger Chronicles is Powered by Simplecast  Learn more about your ad choices. 29 Apr 2020Public Land Whitetails & Alaskan Fishing Guide01:13:52
On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan connects with returning guest Mitch Schmidt about his days as a Alaskan fishing guide and a 2019 trip to Kansas that resulted in a booner on the 4th day. Mitch walks us through why he decided to head to Alaska and become a fishing guide and his day to day responsibilities at the lodge he works for. He talks about being a boat captain, flying in a float plane, and bear encounters while fishing with clients on the river. Then we transition back to whitetails as he breaks down his 2019 Kansas bowhunt on public land with one of his best hunting buddies. They discuss the digital scouting that was involved and how the first couple days were dedicated to driving around, locating deer and putting boots on the ground looking for sign.  It didn't take long for the guys to find success as they were both tagged out within the first 4 days of a 10 day hunt.  This is just a kick ass story of guy living his best life!   Nine Finger Chronicles is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices.
