Should hate crimes be treated differently or more severely than other crimes? The shocking murder of Sarah Everard has focussed national attention on violence against women. But should mysogyny be a specific hate crime? The charges brought against the suspect in the Sarah Everard case are for murder and kidnap. Is that sufficient? *EXCLUSIVE* In his first interview since being "cancelled" for a comment he made in a 2020 YouTube interview (dealing with slavery & genocide), Dr. David Starkey returns to our #SWYSI​ sofa to explain his remarks and discuss the storm that engulfed him in the immediate aftermath. Dr. Starkey reveals that whilst his social life was broadly unaffected, the impact on his professional life was severe. In this era of woke, when once venerable institutions can no longer be relied upon, Dr. Starkey found himself removed, dropped, ejected or forced to resign from one notable body after another -- from Fitzwilliam College & the University of Cambridge to the British Library & the Royal Historical Society -- with little recourse for appeal. He believes that the institutional elites who choose to react in such harsh ways are creating a stifling, authoritarian culture that is immensely destructive, both to academia and wider society. He draws a comparison between the experience of those who've been "cancelled" by woke extremists with the treatment traditionally meted out to heretics by religious fundamentalists. Dr. Starkey explains how the "mental adventurousism" of creativity, originality and ingenuity that underscored Britain's success and which stands as its best chance for future success against the great powers of China, India etc. cannot surive in such an environment. Dr. Starkey returns to the subect of slavery & genocide to explain what he had originally intended to say. He rejects the left's attempt to draw a comparison between the British Empire / slavery and Nazi Germany / genocide. He also attacks Black Lives Matter and rails against the victimhood culture which he believes is now endemic in the UK and the Anglosphere. He laments the current trend for assuming that America's cultural problems automatically apply also to Britain -- they don't. Britain doesn't have the race relations problems of America, yet BLM and others would have us believe there is no difference. In the wake of the US verdict in the George Floyd case and following the release of Tony Sewell's "Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities" report here in the UK, this week's #SWYSI​ examines the state of race relations in the UK, the left's attitude to ethnic minorities, education and social mobility. Film director Martin Durkin, dubbed "the Michael Moore of the right" and perhaps best known to our audiences for "Brexit: The Movie", returns to the #SWYSI​ sofa to discuss his newest documentary, a provocative feature-length film on the politics of race in America. In the "Great American Race Game" (https://greatamericanracegame.com/​) , Durkin explores a number of awkward questions: Has the accusation of ‘racist’ descended into a cheap political slur, used cynically and casually by the American Left to discredit, intimidate and silence political opponents? Are Democrats forced to focus relentlessly on the spectre of Racism, in order to maintain their grip on the ‘black vote’ (without which they would struggle to achieve power)? Does the Left’s embrace of Race as a primary focus, serve to make their otherwise unpopular anti-capitalist politics seem more noble and virtuous? A remarkable number of BLM and Antifa supporters appear to be white university students. Could it be that the Left’s disdain for consumer society, their championing of ‘Trans’ rights, and their obsession with ‘Climate Change’, does not resonate with ordinary black Americans? Are allegations of ‘systemic racism’ used to divert attention from the real problems facing America’s poorest black communities (for example, lousy government schools)? A large number of working-class Americans do not seem enamoured with high taxes and big government, and as a result they vote Republican. This working-class rejection of Socialism is clearly embarrassing for the American Left. Do blanket accusations of racism serve to vilify and dismiss working class Republicans as ‘ignorant racist bigots’? It is said that “All Whites Are Racist”. There is still plenty of racial bigotry in America, as there is elsewhere in the world. It is a terrible thing, and should be exposed, fought and condemned. Racists should be attacked and shamed. But is it helpful, or fair, to accuse people of being racist who are not, to find racism where there is none, and to use the accusation of ‘racist’ indiscriminately as a lazy political insult? What should we make of last week's news that the Home Secretary Priti Patel wants the police to stop recording these "non-hate crime incidents" over fears that the College of Policing's policy is blighting employment prospects and curbing free speech. Joining Peter Whittle to discuss these and many other policing issues are: * Harry Miller of the "Fair Cop" campaign group, which campaigns against attempts to criminialise individuals for expressing opinions that do not contravene any laws. Harry achieved national fame after he was investigated by police for posting a poem on Twitter. A “cohesion officer” from Humberside Police telephoned Harry and told him that, while his tweets had not broken any laws, he should "check his thinking" and not engage in political debate on Twitter “because some people don’t like it”. The officer cited 30 ‘potentially offensive tweets’, but the police have so far refused to identify the tweets they deem to be offensive. It's a view held by most people, so why has it become so controversial to state that trans women aren't women? On this episode of "So What You're Saying Is..." A former leader of the Conservatives in the London Assembly, Gareth Bacon MP is a member of the Conservative Party's anti-woke "Common Sense Group" (CSG). This influential group of Conservative Parliamentarians has published a new book with a long-term vision on how the party should adopt "common sense solutions" to crime, immigration and the culture wars. Among the policies proposed are the break up of the BBC, taking on the internet giants, scrapping the Supreme Court, defeating woke-ism, ending hate speech laws, tackling immigration and supporting marriage and the family. This time on #SWYSI, we are joined by legendary pollster Frank Luntz. As the world's leading expert on political language & communication, Dr. Luntz is extremely well known in both his native USA as well as the UK, where his advice is eagerly sought by governments and senior politicians. Dr Frank Luntz, has spent the summer working with the Centre for Policy Studies on a landmark survey of the British public’s language and values. He has conducted one of the most extensive polling exercises yet seen, uncovering the public’s sentiments on language and values. (Full report here: https://www.cps.org.uk/media/press-re...) His headline findings are: Britain is not as divided as America - but an alarmingly large segment of the public is deeply disillusioned. Voters are almost as fed up with business as with politicians - presenting a huge challenge for supporters of capitalism and enterprise. Tory and Labour supporters are united by their values - but fundamentally split on policies and priorities. Concern about climate change is cross-party - but ‘woke’ attitudes are far less mainstream than in the US. Voters prefer the Tory party of today to its predecessors - but all voters prefer the Labour Party of Tony Blair to that of Starmer or Corbyn. 43% of Britons feel they are invested in their country, but only 27% feel it is invested in them. 70% of respondents said politicians were in it for themselves or their party, with a mere 9% believing they prioritised their constituents. The key words people chose to describe their attitudes towards politicians were ‘disappointed’ (40%), ‘ignored’ (36%) and ‘fed up’ (30%). Nine of the top 10 answers were negative, with only 14% saying they made them feel ‘hopeful.’ Two thirds of respondents agreed that their attitude to politicians was 'F*** em all', including 78% of Labour voters and 46% of Conservatives. Islam is the fastest-growing faith community in Britain. Domes and minarets are redefining the skylines of towns and cities as mosques become an increasingly prominent feature. Yet while Britain has prided itself on being a global home of cosmopolitanism and modern civilisation, its deep-rooted relationship with Islam is complex, threatened by rising hostility. There is much media debate about embracing diversity in our communities, but what does integration look like on the ground, in places like Dewsbury, Glasgow, Belfast and London? How are Muslims, young and old, reconciling British values - of individualism, the rule of law, free speech & equality between the sexes - with literalist interpretations of their faith? And how is this tension, away from the public gaze, unfolding inside mosques today? In this episode of #SWYSI, author & academic Prof. Ed Husain discusses how his new book "Among the Mosques: A Journey Across Muslim Britain" took him into the heart of Britain's Muslim communities in a search for answers. Travelling the length and breadth of the country, Husain joins men and women in their prayers, conversations, meals etc. He tells their stories here in an open and honest account that brings the daily reality of British Muslim life sharply into focus - a struggle of identity and belonging, caught between tradition and modernity, East and West, revelation and reason. Ed Husain is an adjunct Professor in the Walsh School of Foreign Service in Georgetown University. He is also a writer and political advisor who has worked with leaders and governments across the world. He has held senior fellowships at think tanks in London and New York, including at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) at the height of the Arab uprisings (2010-2015). While at CFR, his policy innovation memo led to the US-led creation of a Geneva-based global fund to help counter terrorism. Husain was a senior advisor to former British Prime Minister Tony Blair (2015-2018). From 2018-2021 he completed his doctoral studies on Western philosophy and Islam under the direction of the English philosopher Sir Roger Scruton. He is the author of The Islamist (Penguin, 2007), The House of Islam: A Global History (Bloomsbury, 2018), and Among the Mosques (Bloomsbury, 2021). His writing has been shortlisted for the George Orwell Prize. A regular contributor to the Spectator magazine, he has appeared on the BBC and CNN and has written for the Telegraph, The Times, the New York Times, the Guardian and other publications.

This time on #SWYSI we are joined by barrister & legal commentator Francis Hoar, author of "In Protection of Freedom of Speech", a report commissioned by Laurence Fox's "Reclaim Party" and which includes a foreword by former Supreme Court Justice Lord Sumption. According to Mr. Hoar, a right to freedom of expression should be enshrined in UK law to counter the rising tide of “cancel culture” and other forms of woke-inspired censorship and discrimination. His report comes as the government propose an ‘Online Safety Bill’ which would require social media companies to censor ‘harmful’ speech that might offend adults, even if no criminal offence was committed. In his report Mr. Hoar proposes three key reforms designed to give UK citizens the same protection as the First Amendment to the US Constitution: 1. The police should lose the power to investigate so-called “non-crime hate incidents” and the Scottish Hate Crime Bill should be scrapped 2. Websites should be prevented from censoring content posted by users unless a criminal offence or civil wrong is committed 3. In his book Jeremy Black offers a historian’s interpretation from the perspective of the late 2010s, assessing James Bond in terms of the greatly changing world order of the Bond years―a lifetime that stretches from 1953, when the first novel appeared, to the present. Black argues that the Bond novels―the Fleming books as well as the often-neglected novels authored by others after Fleming died in 1964―and films drew on current fears in order to reduce the implausibility of the villains and their villainy. The novels and films also presented potent images of national character, explored the rapidly changing relationship between a declining Britain and an ascendant United States, charted the course of the Cold War and the subsequent post-1990 world, and offered an evolving but always potent demonology. Bond was, and still is, an important aspect of post–World War II popular culture throughout the Western world. This was particularly so after Hollywood launched the filmic Bond, thus making him not only a character designed for the American film market but also a world product and a figure of globalization. Class, place, gender, violence, sex, race―all are themes that Black scrutinizes through the ongoing shifts in characterization and plot. On this week's #SWYSI, the Chairman of Migration Watch tells the stark truth about UK immigration, revealing that he does not trust the government. He argues that government policy will increase not reduce immigration. Indeed, rather than enabling British jobs for British people post Brexit, government policy has opened up the UK job market to 600 million people globally. In the past 20 years the foreign born population of the UK has doubled to 9 million. Net immigration of 300,000 per year already poses huge problems for integration, problems that will become worse over time -- and highly damaging to society and the nation. Sarah Elliott is Chairwoman of Republicans Overseas UK, the official body representing the US Republican Party in the UK. In this interview with former BBC journalist Robin Aitken (author of "Can We Trust the BBC?"), Mrs. Elliott discusses her first-hand experiences of BBC attitudes towards Trump and the Republicans. Britain's longest-reigning king, George III has gone down in history as 'the cruellest tyrant of this age' (Thomas Paine, eighteenth century), 'a sovereign who inflicted more profound and enduring injuries upon this country than any other modern English king' (W.E.H. Lecky, nineteenth century), 'one of England's most disastrous kings' (J.H. Plumb, twentieth century) and as the pompous monarch of the musical Hamilton (twenty-first century). Andrew Roberts's magnificent new biography takes entirely the opposite view. It portrays George as intelligent, benevolent, scrupulously devoted to the constitution of his country and (as head of government as well as head of state) navigating the turbulence of eighteenth-century politics with a strong sense of honour and duty. He was a devoted husband and family man, a great patron of the arts and sciences, keen to advance Britain's agricultural capacity ('Farmer George') and determined that her horizons should be global. He could be stubborn and self-righteous, but he was also brave, brushing aside numerous assassination attempts, galvanising his ministers and generals at moments of crisis and stoical in the face of his descent - five times during his life - into a horrifying loss of mind. The book gives a detailed, revisionist account of the American Revolutionary War, persuasively taking apart a significant proportion of the Declaration of Independence, which Roberts shows to be largely Jeffersonian propaganda. In a later war, he describes how George's support for William Pitt was crucial in the battle against Napoleon. And he makes a convincing, modern diagnosis of George's terrible malady, very different to the widely accepted medical view and to popular portrayals. Roberts writes, 'the people who knew George III best loved him the most', and that far from being a tyrant or incompetent, George III was one of our most admirable monarchs. He agues that the British police were once unique in the world. They were an important conservative & very English institution which was set up in complete distinction from continental police forces. Parliament had seen European police forces become tools of oppression. They were armed & uniformed state police whose job was to enforce the will of the state -- and it was not felt that such a body should exist in Britain. Consequently, the British police force that was set up was very different: unarmed, not given special powers, limited in their abilities. We ignore our past at our peril. The problem, Tim argues, is that the Western tradition is anti-tradition, that we have a habit of discarding old ways and old knowledge, leaving us uncertain how to act or, even, of who we really are. The good news, he argues, is that tradition can also be rebuilt. It's been done before. Prof. Frank Furedi, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent, joins Peter Whittle on the #SWYSI sofa to discuss his new book "100 Years of Identity Crisis: Culture War Over Socialization". Born in Hungary, Prof. Furedi also reminisces about witnessing that country's famous anti-communist revolution of 1956. He also argues that contemporary Hungary & Poland are being demonised in the West and unjustly caricatured in ways he does not recognise. In terms of his new book, Prof. Furedi points out that the concept of Identity Crisis came into usage in the 1940s and has continued to dominate the cultural zeitgeist ever since. Exploring the historical origins of this development, Frank Furedi argues that the principal driver of the crisis of identity was and continues to be the conflict surrounding the socialisation of young people. In turn, the politicisation of this conflict provides a terrain on which the Culture Wars and the politicisation of identity can flourish. On 30 November 2021 Neil Oliver delivered the New Culture Forum's 2021 Smith Lecture to a sold-out audience in central London. The title to his talk was "The Attack on Our History & Culture". In recent years we have seen a concerted effort to rewrite British history, denigrating its achievements, exaggerating its faults and casting its heroes as villains. From Churchill to Nelson, our most revered national figures have been unjustly defamed & their reputations traduced. From the abolition of slavery to the Industrial Revolution and the development of one of the world’s most racially tolerant societies, Britain’s remarkable achievements are now undermined by agenda-driven historical revisionists. Alas, from schools to universities, our younger generations are now all too often taught such revisionism as historical fact. No surprise, therefore, that attitudes towards Britain’s history & culture, and institutions such as the Monarchy, are far more negative in those under 25 than above it. This divergence in opinion is greater than we have ever known before – and does not bode well for the future. For a nation ignorant of its past is unlikely to sustain its culture, institutions and society. Africa's population growth in the last 50 years has been unprecedented. By mid-century, the continent will make up a quarter of the global population, compared to one-tenth in 1980. By the end of the century, the proportion could be as much as 40 per cent. This is a mega-trend that should not be ignored. Africa's youth is the most striking aspect of its demography. As the rest of the world ages, and the population of many countries starts to shrink, almost 60 per cent of Africa's population is younger than 25 years old. The UK's new "No-Fault" Divorce laws should come with a public health warning as its outcomes will be apocalyptic for men. So argues, Matt O'Connor, founder of the Fathers 4 Justice campaign group, on this episode of #SWYSI. Fathers 4 Justice say that marriage is currently a sexist "man trap". They want to see genuine reform of the institution that removes anti-male elements such as spousal maintenance. Sweden, for example, has eliminated spousal maintenance for divorce settlements as it is sexist to expect a man to support a woman. Its disciples even have their own language, rituals and a determination to root out sinners through what has become known as 'cancel culture'. Doyle examines the underlying belief-systems of this ideology, and how it has risen so rapidly to dominate all major political, cultural and corporate institutions. He reasons that, to move forward, we need to understand where these new puritans came from and what they hope to achieve. The National Trust, a beloved national institution tasked with preserving Britain's heritage, has become mired in controversy in recent years. Following the horrendous attack on Salman Rushdie by a Muslim fundamentalist, Peter Whittle is joined by Wasiq Wasiq, Associate Fellow at the Henry Jackson Society's Centre on Radicalisation & Terrorism, for a wide-ranging discussion about Islam, Islamism and the fundamentalist agenda in Britain. Wasiq Wasiq is a founding trustee for the charity Muslims Against Antisemitism (MAAS). Moreover, with a particular expertise in Islamism, he has been raising the issue of how non-violent Islamism is threatening western democracies. Most recently, Wasiq was one of two lay advisors on the Singh Investigation into alleged discrimination and ‘Islamophobia’ in the Conservative Party. The report concluded that allegations of institutional racism against the Party were not borne out by the evidence available to the Investigation. This ground breaking and historic report was fully accepted by the Conservative Party whom have now agreed to all recommendations.
