Episode Summary

We’re back for the first Shonen Heat week of 2024! This episode tackles Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 247, My Hero Academia chapter 411, and One Piece chapter 1103. In Jujutsu Kaisen, the battle between Higuruma and Itadori vs Sukuna continues with a shocking death and an even more shocking finale. Meanwhile, over in My Hero Academia Shigaraki strips Deku of one of his quirks and pushes the young hero to go beyond his limits. Finally, One Piece finishes the Kuma flashback and more of Bonney’s past is revealed by Saint Saturn and her spirit begins to break. The DCEU and the MCU have multiverse fever! Long hinted at in both franchises, the multiverse is getting explored in 2022. Marvel Cinematic Movies like Avengers: Endgame and Spider: No Way Home just scratched the surface of the multiverse. This year, Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness will dive deeper into different worlds. Likewise, The DC Extended Universe releases its live-action Flash movie which saw its star character crossover on the CW's Flash show.  This Flashpoint-inspired movie will see him cross different into different universes including the world of Batman 89. Now that these properties are opening up to the multiverse, the possibilities are endless to what comic book fans can see on the big screen. Amazon's Invincible aired its first season and put other superhero shows on notice! This show is another in a recent string of superhero shows that have taken our ideas of what heroes are and turned them on its head. Shows like The Boys and Umbrella Academy offer competition in the genre. However because Invincible is animated, the creative team can have more fun. We brought back Mike and Max from past shows to help us break down Amazon's Invincible season one.

None of us have read the comics, so this review is based solely on the information presented in season one. In this episode, we talked about the different heroes and villains we met throughout the show, and who we want to see more of in season two. We also talked about some of our favorite moments from season one and when we all saw the plot twist.  Obviously, we have to talk about everyone's new favorite subway scene and the other amazing fights we saw this season. My Hero Academia and Black Clover just had two of their best chapters of the year. Both chapters got us excited in their own special way and we figured it was time to do another double manga chapter review. The newest chapter of My Hero Academia had some awesome action from Stars and Stripes, as well as an explanation of her OP quirk. We covered her backstory, fight with Shigaraki (or AFO), and what potential fates her character will face in the first segment. In the second segment, we talk about the revelation of Yuno and his new magic; Star Magic. His battle with Zenon is starting to draw many parrallels, setting up an epic final controntation between the two. The dual grimoire user still has his sights on becoming the next Wizard King of the Clover Kingdom, but where does that leave the Spade Kingdom?

Summary

My Hero Academia chapter 369 continues the final arc with an epic battle heating up between Deku and Shigaraki. In the first half of this episode we talk about the growth both our main hero and villain have showed since their first encounter in terms of character and power. We also discussed the epic cliffhanger we were left on before the transition to Spinner vs Shoji at the hospital. The second half is all speculation with our thoughts on Kurogiri joining the fight, Deku's time limit, Bakugo's return and more. Will Shigarki be using his quirks next time we see him? The Black Clover anime has officially ended after 170 episodes and two seasons. Even though we'll be getting a Black Clover movie soon, there is still no word if we'll get another season. So in this episode, we showed the story a little love. We talked about our favorite characters, fights, and moments, as well as what the movie could be about.

Meanwhile, the Black Clover manga continues to go strong. The manga's most recent chapters offer some great background information on characters and some amazing fight scenes that we would love to see animated. It also provides a potential plot hole in the story that contradicts events that happened in the anime and manga's War Arc with the reincarnated elves.

Summary

One for All is the most powerful quirk in My Hero Academia. Also, it is a very unique quirk, as it is able to be passed on from one user to another. As of recently in the manga and the anime, the quirk has been the center of attention. First, we have anime watchers who recently discovered that Deku will be able to gain access to six additional quirks outside of the power boost OFA gives him. Then you've got manga readers, who are aware of all its quirks except for one. In this episode, we break down all the former, current, and even hypothetical users of the quirk. We also discuss the different quirks inside OFA and how the quirks have been boosted.

However, before we get started talking about the different powers, we start with the origins of the quirk from All for One and the generations-long conflict between him and all the previous users, including his younger brother and the former number one pro hero, All Might. Deku has come a long way since our last My Hero Academia review and he's going to need all the power his quirk has to offer in order to defeat All for One and Shigaraki. Happy Father's Day!  Marq, the MB8cast host, and fellow father joined us for this special episode. We kick off our Father's Day special with some special guests. Viv and Ella, future podcasters get behind the mic for the first time. They covered the hard topics; unicorns, sleepovers, and of course --- Father's Day.

After they wrapped up their segment, the dads talked about some underrated fictional dads we've come to idolize over the years. This list won't have name's like Mufasa and Uncle Iroh, as they get plenty of credit.

Our list contains both animated and live-action fictional dads. Some animated dads we highlighted include Grandpa Phil from Hey Arnold and Stu Pickles from Rugrats. On the other hand, our live-action dads include the likes of Floyd Henderson from Smart Guy and Michael Kyle from My Wife and Kids. Marq usually joins us to talk football, but he showcased his knowledge on movies, TV, and parenthood in this one! We closed this episode reflecting as parents and what we learned from all these great depictions of dads. Especially all the good representation that was out there for us. Summary Gotham Knights joins a long list of Batman shows that don't center around the Dark Knight. The upcoming CW show features Bruce's newest adopted son, Turner Hayes, teaming up with the children of Batman's enemies after Turner is framed for Bruce's murder. We have a lot of complaints about the show based on the trailer and synopsis. This includes dragging two underutilized Robins and some very obscure characters into the show. Record of Ragnorak is the latest anime to hit Netflix. Adapted from the Record of Ragnorak manga, the 12 episode season was released last month to the streaming service. Much like Yasuke, this series was also meant with some mixed reviews. While the plot and characters are interesting enough, the animation and pacing left much to be desired.

In this review, Max from our superhero and supervillain football team episodes brought his anime knowledge to the table. Everyone loves a good tournament arc in anime, but Record of Ragnorak is a tournament show! First, we talked about the all-star lineup of humans and gods we were introduced to in season one. Those we discussed included Zeus, Shiva, Adam, and Lu Bo. Then, we broke down the fights we got to see during the 12 episode run. Finally, we wrapped up this episode by looking at who still has to fight on both sides and gave some matchup predictions. Which match-up are you most excited to see? Space Jam: A New Legacy is currently in theaters and streaming on HBO Max. Don't listen to the LeBron haters; the new movie is just as good, if not better, the original. We brought in basketball expert Marq from the MB8Cast to help review Space Jam: A New Legacy and he did not disappoint. This episode highlighted his sports and film knowledge. While the movie may not be getting any Oscar nominations, if you want to watch LeBron James play basketball with Bugs Bunny, that's exactly what you're going to get.

In this review, we covered all the sports references and Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the movie. Considering every Warner Bros. character you can think of showed up, there was a lot to cover! We also threw out some matchups, including The Monstars vs The Goon Squad and the team LeBron wanted to put together. The DECU is about to be gone in a flash. Literally. The Flash movie coming out later this year will be the send-off to the DCEU and usher in James Gunn's DC Cinematic Universe. Summary

Our Fairy Tail vs Black Clover series has reached its conclusion. Much like the anime for both these stories, all good things must come to an end. However, there is hope over the horizon. Even though there's no new Fairy Tail or Black Clover to watch, you can still catch up with your favorite wizards in the pages of their respective mangas. Fairy Tail is still going strong with its sequel series, Fairy Tail: 100 Year Quest and Black Clover's latest arc sees our favorite magic knights going to war with the Spade Kingdom.

In this episode, we discuss what's currently going on in the manga of both stories as well as speculate about their future, both in the pages and on the screen. Before we start though, we address a time that C. Ro was loud and wrong concerning a potential plot hole going back to Black Clover's War Arc with the elves. Summary Godzilla vs Kong dropped last week in theaters and on HBO Max. The film delivers, despite what critics might say. If you want to see Godzilla fight King Kong, then that’s exactly what you’re going to get. The nearly two-hour movie delivers on the action, even if there are plenty of moments where you have to suspend your disbelief. Godzilla vs Kong doesn’t take itself too seriously and when we see these two legendary titans go at it, they get down! The action scenes didn't disappoint and it's easier to laugh with the movie than at it at many points. If you're looking to turn your brain off and take in some giant monster action, look no further! The Olympics just wrapped up in Tokyo after a delay due to COVID-19. With the location being Japan and the ambassador being none other than Dragon Ball's Goku, it's needless to say anime completely took over the games. Events like shot put, archery, horseback riding, and others got a healthy dose of shonen energy. 

We took a look at all the anime references we could find from watching the Olympics and searching the Internet. Highlights included some nods to One Piece characters that got attention from the anime's official Twitter, an honorable anime getting some love, and two major publications showed the world they don't have an otaku running their social media. Summary Mortal Kombat is currently streaming on HBO Max and showing in theaters. The long-awaited live-action adaption of the Mortal Kombat videogame series has been with mixed reviews. We at the Nerding with Friends were not fans. Like the last movie we reviewed, we went in with low expectations, just wanting to see some awesome fights and gore. Questionable acting, a weak story, and lack of memorable fatalities are just a few reasons we didn't like this movie. It was hard to ignore the story and enjoy the fights with how underwhelming the fight scenes were. However, this review is more of a versus thanks to a superior film released a year prior. Much like DC, it seems like the Mortal Kombat animated movies will be better than their live-action counterparts. Mortal Kombat: Scorpion's Revenge is a much better film all around. While we can excuse the effects, the animated film's plot not only has fan service and action but is a far more compelling story. We took a look at both these films and every way we looked at it the animated version comes out on top. Did you see wither of these movies? Summary

Black Clover has given us some amazing characters. One of which is fire magic user Magna Swing. Magna Swing is a character we've talked about a lot on the podcast about not getting his time to shine. Black Clover chapter 293 just changed that.

Before we started giving Magna Swing his praise, we took a minute to discuss two things. The first was a positive COVID test that caused us to miss a few weeks. The second was taking a moment to discuss the recent passing of Berzerk mangaka, Kentaro Miura. The impact he's left on the anime world will forever be present and can be seen in the likes of stories like Black Clover.

Batman: The Long Halloween is another gem in the DC Animated movie vault. This two-parter was a breath of fresh air compared to other Batman movies released in recent years. Batman: The Long Halloween does a great job of bringing the comic to life while adding some great new changes. These movies feature not only a grounded Batman but a young one, way before he became the World's Greatest Detective. Part one of The Long Halloween introduces us to some fan favorites such as Catwoman, James Gordon, and Harvey Dent. We also are introduced to some characters casual fans might not know like Calendar Man.

Also, we are introduced to the story's main villain, The Holiday Killer.  The mystery of the killer runs through both parts and is a driving force of the story. Between the mafia-inspired Maroni and Falcone families and Harvey Dent, whose sanity is questioned. Overall, Batman: The Long Halloween ranks high on the list of DC animated movies and is hopefully a sign of good things to come. What did you think of parts one and two of The Long Halloween? Anime has gained popularity for many reasons over the years. Some of these include well-developed characters and amazing fight scenes. Another thing anime is notorious for is disrespectful moments. These moments of disrespect can range from slight to super. Luckily, we're here to break them down. In our first segment, we went over a list of the top 10 most disrespectful anime moments from Bilibili ANIME. Summary

The DC Animated Universe movies did what the DCEU couldn't. The DC Animated Universe is still going strong with Batman: The Long Halloween Part 1 releasing later this year. Anime and Manga have brought us some of the best duos in fiction. In this new series, we're taking a look at some of the most iconic duos in anime from the new school and the old school. Of course, we had to start things off with a pair of OGs in Goku and Vegeta from the Dragon Ball franchise and Naruto and Sasuke from the Naruto franchise. In the first segment, we look at how both duos looked fighting against, as well as with each other, and how their bonds were formed. We’re back with Shonen Heat Week! One Piece is on a break this week, so we reviewed Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 237 and My Hero Academia chapter 402. Following the defeat of Gojo, we pick up right where we left off in Jujutsu Kaisen as the battle between Sukuna and Kashimo begins. Both these fighters, once viewed as the strongest of their time, clash in philosophies and use special one-use techniques that will make this fight more interesting. Taking a page out of Jujutsu Kaisen’s book, Chapter 402 of My Hero Academia features the presumed death of a beloved character. Ironically, a manga chapter filled with callbacks back to chapter 0 left us considering the future. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was the second MCU show to hit Disney+. The show, presented as an action-adventure thriller, discussed serious subjects like race and classism. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier wrapped up season one in April, but it laid the groundwork for future MCU properties. In this episode, we were joined by K-Mitch, a good friend to the podcast and the first guest we had on the show. Similar to our Star Wars episode with K-Mitch, this episode focused heavily on race, particularly the comparison of Sam Wilson and Isiah Bradley -- two black men that took up the mantle of Captain America.

Another subject we tackled was the development of characters like Sharon Carter, Baron Zemo, and most importantly, Bucky Barnes. Also, we got into some of our highlights of the show. John Walker aka USAgent actor Wyatt Russell might've stolen the show along with a surprise appearance from the Dora Milaje.

A subject we touched on briefly was the scrapped pandemic storyline. Due to the real-world COVID-19 pandemic, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier went through a couple of rewrites. My Hero Academia recently finished wrapping up its War Arc and the world of heroes has been turned on its head. We’re back with Shonen Heat Week! Jujutsu Kaisen is on a break, but since we missed last week we had to touch on what happened in chapter 235. The battle between Gojo and Sukuna has concluded and Gojo is HIM! In this episode, we explore the latest developments in "My Hero Academia" with Chapter 400. Aoyama and Hagakure’s fight concludes with the former making a stunning declaration. All for One and All Might’s fight continues as All Might displays more Class 1A quirks in his armor. Things take a turn when an unexpected ally joins the fight. 

Then, we set sail with the Strawhat Pirates for chapter 1092 of One Piece Chapter. Akainu confronts Kuma in the Holy Land and Luffy continues to battle with Kizaru. The admiral was able to contend with Snake Man and make his way to the crew and VegaPunks, which recently cracked York’s code, but how will he fair against Gear 5? 

How will the fight between All Might and All for One end? What about Luffy vs. Kizaru? Let us know!

Summary

The Justice League: Snyder Cut was released last month on HBO Max. Fans loved this version of the film and it didn't feel like an edit of the theatrical release. However, The Justice League: Snyder Cut felt like an entirely different movie from the original. The Snyder Cut has been a film we've been anticipating for quite some time now. It was only right we brought back Gareth from our DC Fandome episode to go over this four-hour-long, fan-driven film.

The Snyder Cut was still not without its own flaws, despite being a huge upgrade over the version we originally received. This may be the best, and longest film in the DCEU, but how does it compare to DC's animated movies? What did you think about The Snyder Cut? Was it a great movie or just better than the original?
