08 Aug 2024Retinal Membrane (Macula Pucker) An Integrated Medical Approach00:06:29

Dr. Grossman explains that ERM comprises various cell types, including glial cells, retinal pigment epithelial cells, macrophages, and fibrocytes. The degree of visual distortion varies depending on the amount and location of the pucker, which can be assessed using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Although ERM typically affects central vision and not peripheral vision, it is often asymptomatic and progresses slowly. The condition is more common in elderly individuals and is associated with other eye issues such as retinal detachment and diabetic retinopathy.

Dr. Grossman suggests that inflammation may play a significant role in the development of ERM, possibly exacerbated by COVID-19 or its vaccine. He recommends an anti-inflammatory diet and supplements like Zyflamend, serrapeptase, and his own Meso Plus formula, which contains carotenoids to support macular health. While traditional medicine may suggest peeling off the scar tissue, Dr. Grossman advocates for natural approaches and consulting a retinal specialist for further advice.

For more information, listeners are encouraged to visit naturaleyecare.com and drgrossman2020.com, email info@naturaleyecare.com, or call 845-475-4158. Dr. Grossman also invites listeners to subscribe to and review the podcast.

Eye exercises are also recommended to maintain the flexibility of eye muscles.

The podcast also touches on the connection between physical exercise and reduced risks of chronic illnesses like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Dr. Grossman cites studies showing that regular exercise, even starting in middle age, can significantly lower the risk of dementia and improve memory.

Dr. Grossman concludes by urging listeners to incorporate some form of physical activity into their daily routine to preserve vision and overall health. 16 Jul 2020Natural Solutions for Pink Eye and Conjunctivitis00:08:07

Pink eye, red eye, or conjunctivitis is the most common eye disease in the Western hemisphere. How is pink eye diagnosed? What can you do to prevent and soothe this common eye infection?

The conjunctiva is the tissue covering the whites of the eye and inside the eyelid. Conjunctivitis comes on quickly. The eye becomes red, swollen, teary, and itchy. It might feel like a grain of sand is in the eye. Bacteria is usually the cause, but it could be allergies or certain viruses.*

Pink eye is highly contagious. It spreads through objects and contact. The doctor may prescribe sulfa-based eye drops. If the infection does not clear in 3 days, broad spectrum antibiotics could be used.

Dr. Grossman has researched and applied natural remedies to help clear up conjunctivitis. They include nutrition, acupressure, herbs, homeopathic remedies, and herbs. He has prepared his EyeEase herbal tincture, which includes many of these natural substances to fight this eye infection. Listen to find out how to use this tincture and where to find it.

*The podcast does not mention COVID-19; however, the coronovirus that causes COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, appears to be able to infect the eye. Learn more at https://www.naturaleyecare.com/blog/face-shield-protect-eyes-from-coronavirus-covid19/

24 Jul 2020The Thyroid, Nutrition, and Traditional Chinese Medicine00:08:07

How are nutrition, eye disease, and the thyroid connected? What is Traditional Chinese Medicine's point of view on the eye? The eyes are nutrient-hungry. Yet, our nutrition is partially thwarted by toxins and refined foods. As people age, their nutrition becomes weaker. What can seniors do to improve their nutrition and absorption of nutrients?

The eyes are windows to changes elsewhere in the body. For example, high blood pressure and diabetes effect the eyes. Did you know that both the iris and the whites of the eyes can indicate problems in the body?

Traditional Chinese Medicine sees specific organs as connected to parts of the eye. For instance, the liver is connected to the cornea and the iris. Something that is happening in the eye may also be happening in the body.

The thyroid gland regulates the body's basil energy metabolism. Hypothyroidism, or a low-functioning thyroid, means the liver cannot break beta carotene down into Vitamin A. This, in turn, can cause dry eye, poor night vision, and difficult adjusting to changes in light. Which eye diseases are associated with hypothyroidism? If a person has this imbalance, what does Dr. Grossman suggest?

14 Aug 2020A New Way of Looking at Eye Examinations00:07:26

Having an eye exam is far more than just reading letters on an eye chart. Ask your optometrist or ophthalmologist for the specific tests and exams that Dr. Marc Grossman describes in this podcast. These exams could help head off serious eye disease in the future through early detection. High-tech tests are important.

The doctor should take your history. Also, do you use electronics excessively? How can electronics use be mitigated?

Several sensitive tests for glaucoma include tests for eye pressure and tests on the cornea. The retinal exam should go beyond a basic slit lamp exam. A digital retinal scanner and OCT are newer technologies produce very detailed images. These machines are important for detection and tracking of eye disease. Everyone over age 50 could benefit from these test as a baseline. Research shows that supplements and lifestyle changes can affect the course of eye disease.

Special tests of the front of the eye look for dry eye and tear duct problems.

Visual field testing helps detect certain eye diseases. Low-tech visual field testing might mean the patient counting fingers at the edges of their visual field. High-tech testing would require the patient to look into a machine and respond to visual cues.

Call around and ask about the new tests. They may cost more, but they are an investment in your vision health.

But what if you want to delay or avoid the surgery? Are there nutrients or other options for cataracts? Zeaxanthin and lutein are nutrients crucial for eye health. However, senior citizens are at highest risk for eye diseases such as macular degeneration. Part of the reason is that they absorb nutrients less efficiently. Their caloric needs are lower. And, the Standard American Diet tends to be low in zeaxanthin and lutein. Therefore, seniors often need supplements. Find out about the research behind these statements. Dr. Marc Grossman's podcast explains how these antioxidants help not only the eye, but also the brain.

08 Oct 2020Controlling Blood Vessel Growth for Diabetic Retinopathy & Wet Macular Degeneration00:07:17

Angiogenesis is the unwanted growth of blood vessels in the retina that leads to vision loss. These excess blood vessels can obscure or distort vision, which damages the eye and may result in permanent damage. Eye doctors may give you injections of Eylea or Lucentis to inhibit the growth of these blood vessels, but some may want a more natural approach. Macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy are prevalent in seniors over the age of 60. Wet macular degeneration, which is worse than dry macular degeneration, affects 10-15% of macular degeneration patients. Those with wet macular degeneration can lose their vision quickly if not taking precautions.

Diabetic retinopathy affects about half of diabetic patients, in which new, fragile capillaries form in your eyes, distort your vision, and may even leak. Studies from Canadian and American researchers suggested that taking natural, herbal antioxidant supplements can halt the growth of these blood vessels. Researchers compiled a list of herbs that inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor, which is a signal protein cells make that tell the body to make new blood vessels. We recommend taking the Blood Vessel Control support formula that can be found on our website naturaleyecare.com
