Mt. Rainier has been the site of more than 400 recorded deaths since it was established as a National Park in 1899. Tragedy is no stranger of the glaciated peak with causes of death including climbing accidents, falls, avalanches, murder and suicide. However this 75 year old accident still holds the solemn title for the single greatest tragedy in the history of the park. Strap in and hold on tight as Danielle talks us through the Curtis Commando R5C crash of 1946.

Pack your bags and bring plenty of supplies, who knows how long you will be joining us in Isle Royale National Park. In this episode we are taking you back to the 1800s during the Copper Rush around Lake Superior. When an indigenous woman and her French-Canadian voyageur husband are asked to head to Isle Royale to scope out copper they agree to stay there for three months during the summer, but when no one comes back for them they need to figure out how to survive the harsh winter of northern Michigan. With starvation and the spirit of Windigo lurking, surviving this winter is going to be extremely difficult.

Pack all of your cold weather gear, trash bags, and oxygen tanks. We are heading to the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest in Sagarmatha National Park. In the past 80 years over 300 people have died on this mountain and many of their bodies have never been recovered.

While tourism to summit Mount Everest has brought money to the country of Nepal it has also brought a huge problem, litter. In a climate where survival is more important than being respectful to our planet, over 100,000 pounds of trash have been left ontop of Mount Everest, cantaminating their water resources. Today we will join a group of Nepali Sherpas who head out to summit Mount Everest to rid it's peaks of garbage but to also recover bodies, something that has never before been done. We will join them on this crueling 29 day adventure where each one of their lives is at risk every single day. With avalanches, freezing temperatures, and oxygen levels not compatible with survival, this team has a lot of obstacles to overcome if they are to make it out alive.

To celebrate National Indigenous History Month, we take a step back in history as Danielle flips back the pages of time and brings us to a dark chapter in US history. Bring your life preserves, lots of food and water, and a camera! We are taking you down an epic trip in the Grand Canyon down the Colorado River in a sweep scow boat. When newly wed couple, Glen and Bessie Hyde set out to the Grand Canyon to set records as the fastest river runners and the first woman to ever run the canyon, they had high hopes but just after a month on their journey they disappear. Their disappearance is anything but normal and they seem to just vanish into thin air. This sparks lots of rumors and theories of what could have happened to them and brings us on a long journey of possibilities. It even makes us question the motives and who people are even years later.

Forrest Fenn was dying when he decided to come up with a treasure hunt. He had plans to give 2 million dollars worth of his gold and treasures to anyone that could find where he hid it. He wrote a poem with 9 clues that would lead one lucky person somewhere into the Rocky Mountains. What he wasn't counting on was all the people that would die, the destruction it would cause, and the crimes that he himself would become a victim of.

This week we are heading deep into Denali National Park to summit Mount Foraker, the third tallest summit in the United States. Bring your ice picks and crampons because we are going to be climbing for this one.

When Colby Coombs, Tom Walter, and Ritt Kellog head out on a mountaineering expedition together the weather created a huge obstacle. With inches of snow falling everyday, huge crevasses, and avalanche conditions, this was no easy trek.
When an avalanche hits, trajedy stikes and leaves one climber with a broken neck. Making it back alive is going to be nearly impossible.

John Wilkes Booth wasn't alone though. He had accomplices and they are going to have to pay the price for conspiring with him. When a friend Dr. Samuel Mudd gets convicted after helping John when he is injured fleeing, he is sent to the most desolate prison in the United States. Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas. The conditions here are horrid and being imprisoned in a place surrounded by ocean, there is no escape.... Or is there?

Alcatraz Island is synonymous with prison. Almost every book, TV show and movie portrays this rocky island in San Francisco Bay as a place where big name gangsters like Al Capone or Alvin Karpis were locked away.  But what you may not know is that this same location renowned for violence and incarceration also served as a beacon of peace and symbol of regaining freedom. For the last episode of 2021, we are headed to the Hawaiian island of Molokai, home to one of the most remote peninsulas in the world. For over a century, thousands of people suffering from ma'i ho'oka'awale, or the “separating sickness” were ripped from their families and forced to the Kalaupapa peninsula, doomed to spend their lives in exile. The dark history of this National Park Historic Site is lightened by the resilience of the native Hawaiian people, their enduring spirit and their efforts to protect and preserve this sacred place.

This week we are heading back to our home state of New Hampshire. This little state is full of big surprises as it is known for the worst weather on the entire planet. 

We dive into our knowledge of New Hampshire and the White Mountains (and add in some local tips for your visit) as we head to the slopes of Mount Washington. 

In January of 1982 two teenage climbers headed out to ice climb and summit but a horrible storm rolled in bringing snow, 140 mph winds and negative temperatures. 

When the Mountain Rescue Service goes out to help them, they find themselves in their own mission for survival. This is a story of extreme loss and tragedy and then redemption and strength.

This week we are traveling back in time to the 1800s. Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and we are taking a deep dive into one story in black history. We follow Freedom Seekers Ellen and William Craft on their 1,000 mile journey to the north. After being enslaved their entire lives, they decide to risk everything to find freedom and create a life they always wanted. 

It's not an easy journey, as Ellen disguises herself as a white male and William's enslaver. They face many challenges and people who would go to extreme lengths to make sure they never escape. 

The National Park Service not only preserves our wild landscapes and wildlife, but it also preserves history. The Boston African American National Historic Site preserves an important part of theirs.

In today’s episode we head back to Yosemite to have a debate. National Parks were created “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people”, but what happens when that enjoyment is restricted? BASE jumping is the most dangerous sport in the world, but that doesn’t stop people from wanting to pursue it. National Parks are some of the best (and safest) places to enjoy the sport, but it’s illegal. Have you ever wondered why some trails are created? In Pacific Rim National Park Reserve on the coast of Vancouver Island, is the West Coast Trail. A beautiful trail that attracts backpackers from all over the world every single year. It is full of lush greenery, beaches, and exciting wildlife. It's the perfect place to escape to for an adventure. 

But this trail wasn't created for backpackers. It was created for a different reason, to rescue survivors of shipwrecks off the coast. Here lives some of the most dangerous waters in the Pacific Ocean. In 1906 one of the most devastating shipwrecks happened. Due to bad weather conditions and mistakes in navigation, it crashed onto a reef, just out of reach of land. Passengers and crew members did everything they could to try to get to safety but the violent waves fought them every step of the way. Onlookers had no way to reach them to help, and stood by helplessly as people died.

Join us this week as we venture around the US to different National Parks.
First stop is Cuyahoga National Park. A park that holds a lot of history and is a staple for conservation and restoration of it's resources. In the late 1800's feathers were a huge fashion craze, to have them on your clothing was a signal of wealth and importance. To obtain these feathers, plume hunters decimated the fragile ecosystem and wading birds of the Everglades. The devastation caused an uproar and a call for conservation efforts to be put into place. Guy Bradley happily accepted the position as Game Warden and wildlife protector of the Everglades. He believed in the cause, and was willing to give his life for it. After his murder, the world finally took notice on what he was fighting so hard to protect.

In May of 1996, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams headed to Shenandoah National Park on a backpacking trip. They were two avid outdoor women who were in love and celebrating their relationship, new jobs, and moving in together. Several days into their trip they went missing and eventually park rangers found that they had been brutally murdered. To this day the case has still not been solved and investigations have slowed down, until now. 

In this episode we speak to investigative journalist Kathryn Miles. Kathryn recently published her newest book, Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. She spent the past several years personally investigating this case discovering police cover ups, negligence in their investigations, lost records, and evidence that was never properly investigated. Today, she tells us about the evidence she has found, the likelihood of this cold case being solved, and how this horrific event has rocked the outdoor community.

In 1945 a sightseeing tour plane carrying American military personnel crashed into the western New Guinea jungle. The survivors spent the next several weeks trying to survive the harsh elements in a land that they knew very little about. They weren't alone though, they had landed right in the middle of indigenous tribal territory, people who they knew to be cannibalistic and violent. In this struggle for survival, they'll  have to open their hearts and minds to people who are foreign to them if they want to make it out alive.
