The New York Islanders are back in training camp, and Joe Pantorno returns to NHP with his thoughts on days one and two. The New York Islanders self-destructed against the Washington Capitals was the latest in an awful streak of bad play to start 2023. The New York Islanders training camp rolls on, and preseason games have begun. The Islanders beat the New York Rangers 4-0 in their first preseason contest (2:30). Erik Gustafsson played well in his first appearance in the orange and blue, and the fourth line found the score sheet early and often (4:11). Gustafsson wasn't the only defenseman who impressed, as the young Robin Salo opened a lot of eyes in his North American preseason debut and could make a case for a roster spot (6:20). Ross Johnston continues to have a strong preseason and is a capable everyday fourth-liner (20:00). The tandem of Ilya Sorokin and Jakub Skarek impressed against the Islanders cross-town rival, shutting the Rangers out in impressive fashion (24:15). The forward lines are becoming a little clearer, as Barry Trotz stated Kyle Palmieri gets the first crack at first-line duties with Mathew Barzal, so how does that impact the rest of the forward group (34:14)?
