09 Nov 2020Sharing Stories of Successes and Failures in My OT Career Journey With Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L00:32:00

Bill is an occupational therapist from California. He has been practicing since 2012. Currently, he practices in skilled nursing facilities setting. He also is an adjunct faculty at Stanbridge University. Bill is finishing up his first term as the California #2 rep for the AOTA Representative Assembly. Bill was a speaker for TEDxGrandForks in 2015 and TEDxYouth@AlamitosBay in 2017. He was also the curator for TEDxAlmansorPark in 2019. Bill is passionate about autism, leadership, and social media in occupational therapy.

Successes and failures and what I got out of the experiences.

Failures/Setbacks

1. During my time as a student for my masters, I was amongst the bottom dwellers of my class. I barely got by kinesiology and neuroscience. Phys dys was my worst subject. I was able to get through this part because I generally built pretty strong rapport with my classmates. They encouraged me to keep fighting and reminded me that finishing up the degree is what matters. Now I am passing on this advice to students I come across on social media. Of course, these experiences were also assets as a faculty, too. I have students told me that because I experienced these struggles, I am able to relate to them better while giving them hope in the process.

2. I found out I have Asperger's in the middle of year 1 and year 2 of OT school. At that time, I was able to put a name to my struggles. But, it was not easy to figure out what accommodations I needed, let alone quickly. I contemplated a leave of absence even though I tried what I can to find hope and support. Turning point of this happened when I was attending the NBCOT/AOTA Student Conclave in 2010. I met Jaclyn Schwartz, who was the ASD Steering Committee chair at the time in person for the first time. We got to know each other because we ran against each other for that position a few months before that. Long story short, Jaclyn gave me a pep talk when we were waiting for our flights to return home from the conference. After she left, even though I still was searching for hope, Jaclyn's words rekindled my passion for OT again. Soon after, we started our unofficial friendly rivalry, as we try to challenge one another to do great things in OT. (I have been joking that our relationship has become one of the best friendly rivalries of all time in OT.)

3. My first year of working clinically was a struggle. I thought my first job was a good fit- location reasonably close to home, having some familiarity with my supervisor, having past successes in school based level 2 fieldwork, and I have a reasonable strong foundation of autism knowledge. However, it ended up exposing many of my weaknesses instead- weaknesses in behavior management, poor play and executive functioning skills. On top of that, I ended up having a relapse after I managed my anxiety well prior to that. So, I abruptly left that job 3 months into it. I then had an unsuccessful attempt at private practice for a year. When I decided to go for a paycheck-to-paycheck job again, I ended up taking a leap of faith to try skilled nursing facilities setting. Instead of taking a full time position right away, I chose to do per diem and started at 20-25 hours a week. My rationale was that I wanted to learn about the setting in my own terms and pace. This strategy turned out to be successful as I was able to become a full time therapist 1.5 years later.

4. I applied for the then AOTA Emerging Leaders Development Program 3 times and got rejected for all 3. I knew I needed some seasoning and mentorship even though many of my contemporaries thought that I was further along than them. Rather than giving up, I decided to build my own mentoring team. This has turned out well for my career. Meanwhile, these rejections gave me swagger to do my best in every OT leadership position I get to have. Of course, how my career is turning out also is motivating...

30 Oct 2022Helping Mothers Thrive00:28:01

Jessica Peterson, OTR, MSOT and Gayle Schwee, OTR, MOT co-founded Matresecence Occupational Therapy to provide community-based OT services to support clients during the transition to motherhood. Born and raised in southern California, Jessica moved to Austin, TX after finishing grad school and has over a decade of experience in SNF and acute care. Jessica is in the process of developing a resource and education website for OT practitioners working with parents with physical disabilities.

Gayle is a born and raised Texan with Filipinx roots. Occupational therapy became her second career when she realized she was inclined to be a care provider. 19 Jan 2021Opening Minds Through Art Part II00:51:33

Oma Episode Part II includes an interview with Art for the Journey's (AFJ) Executive Director, Cindy Paullin, and VCU's OT graduate student, Hannah Johnson. This episode complements the first part of the OMA episode series by exploring the evolution of Art for the Journey through its inception, which began as a non-profit, volunteer organization, until today, as it perseveres through the obstacles the pandemic has presented. It explains how Opening Minds through Art (OMA) was added to AFJ's programs and the impact that it has had on their development and subsequent programs. Art for the Journey overcomes barriers and transforms lives through creative expression, with a special focus on people who do not normally have access to such experiences.  They provide a range of art programs aimed at bringing a sense of wellbeing and even healing within an environment of personal engagement, support, and celebration.  AFJ provides instruction and art-making experiences to women in prison, low income elderly, at-risk children, children with Juvenile Diabetes, older adults with dementia and Alzheimer's, and veterans suffering PTSD and combat-related disabilities.

While AFJ was not created by OT's, much of what they do in their work is very relatable to the field of OT and it's practiced. In this episode, we compare and contrast some of these similarities and bring light to the many ways in which this program is helping numerous populations of the community. Hannah Johnson discusses her experience completing her doctoral capstone project in response to the pandemic and a changing schedule to the curriculum and how she incorporated her OT knowledge into program development with AFJ.

If you have any questions about this episode, AFJ, or would just like to connect, feel free to reach out to the student influencers by email or text!"

Jackie has been working with the military population for 8 years and shares how much they have changed her life. Working with this population, Jackie shares the importance of gaining trust from your client. Jackie's eco-therapy approach to treating Veterans will be a well attended topic at the AOTA conference in Boston.

Her dedication to the program includes teaching several classes such as facilitating specific units and labs, Case-Informed Discussions, and educating students as a fieldwork educator. Jackie is currently the director or rehab at Sitrin Health Care Center in Utica, NY. I am lucky enough to learn at such a beautiful facility that treats patients with neurodegenerative conditions such as ALS and Huntington's disease. The Neuro Care Center is the first and only of its kind in Upstate New York, providing comprehensive care to individuals with Huntington's Disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), two diseases that have no cure and no treatment to slow their progression. This facility treats any patients needing medical rehabilitation as well as the growing military rehabilitation program that Jackie plays a huge role in.

20 Apr 2020Positive Approach to Care: An Interview with Teepa Snow00:27:43

Teepa’s experience in neurological impairment care spans both her personal and professional worlds. Early in her life, her grandfather moved into her family’s house due to his changing abilities. However, at the time words such as eccentric then senile were used. Later on, she helped provide support for other family members with various forms of brain change. As a teenager, Teepa started by volunteering with a group in order to work with children with various developmental disabilities. This group included her much younger sister, who had developed an inoperable brain tumor by age three, leaving her with lasting severe developmental issues. By the time she started college at Duke University, Teepa had been a nursing assistant, before there was a certification, and a volunteer in day programs and hospitals near campus.

TEEPA AT GRADUATION

After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Duke University with a degree in zoology, Teepa worked as a night-time desk clerk at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill, NC. She then went from volunteering at a day program that served elders and people with developmental disabilities to being a full-time assistant there, while she explored what she wanted to do professionally. In 1978, she entered the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill’s (UNC-CH) brand-new Occupational Therapy (OT) Master’s Program and was in its first graduating class in 1980. She gave her first speech to over 500 OTs in San Antonio, Texas, under the direction of Joan Rogers. She finished her 30-minute presentation in under 20 minutes. Lots of nervous energy, to say the least, but a great way to get over her fear of speaking in a hurry. Shortly after that, she published her first article with Joan in the official journal of the American Occupational Therapy Association. After graduation, Teepa consulted in a continuing care retirement community, two local home health companies, and a local nursing home for two years until she began working with UNC.

Teepa was an interdisciplinary team member and clinical associate professor at the UNC-CH School of Medicine's Program on Aging, and a coordinator and care manager for CAP Medicaid waiver services in North Carolina. She has served in a wide variety of leadership and advisory positions in professional organizations at both the state and national levels, including the Alzheimer's Association, Alzheimer's Foundation of America, AOTA, and NBCOT. She’s currently working with a number of national and international projects and organizations. She is currently on the board of the US Dementia Action Alliance, the Alzheimers Support Network in Naples, Florida, and has been asked to join the Advisory Board of Dementia Alliance International, led by Kate Swaffer.

Teepa is an advocate for those living with dementia and has made it her personal mission to help families and professionals better understand how it feels to be living with the challenges and changes that accompany various forms of the condition so that life can be lived fully and well. Her company, Positive Approach to Care, was founded in 2005 and offers education to family and professional care providers all over the world. Her training, services, and products are available through video, online education, and in-person trainings and consulting.
