28 Dec 2018MOMS #60: Aston Villa - The Rise and Fall of a European Champion01:04:09

My Old Man Said's David Michael interviews Richard Sydenham, author of Ticket to the Moon: Aston Villa - The Rise and Fall of a European Champion, to discuss the book which charts Villa's golden period and rise to the pinnacle of European football and then why it went so wrong, so quickly.

The interview includes Sydenham's experiences of talking to many of Villa's players from the period, a trip to the late Doug Ellis's house, winning the trust of the Ron Saunders and Tony Barton families, as well as his interviews with ex-bosses like Graham Turner and Ron Atkinson.

Also, he tells the My Old Man Said podcast how he got access to the club's boardroom notes and memos, which makes the book an authority on the club's most fascinating and glorious period, and why it didn't turn into a longer legacy of success.

We catch up on Villa's preseason matches, latest news and transfer dabblings - most notably the signing of Matty Cash. Also, there's talk of Jose Mourinho's role in All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur, the [Manchester] City Group's 10th club acquisition, the Premier League's live match TV dilemma with UK supporters, while it also encounters Chinese rights issues.

In Overrated and Underrated, in tribute to the signing of Matty Cash, we look at two former Villa right-backs in Gary Charles and Luke Young.

08 Nov 2018MOMS #56: Dean Smith's Progress and His Upcoming Tough Winter Test00:45:29

After maintaining his 100% record at Villa Park with a 2-0 victory against Bolton, the fixtures now get serious up until Christmas for Aston Villa Head Coach Dean Smith. In order to get his team on the promotion path, he must overcome the main Championship promotion contenders in back-to-back games.

My Old Man Said's David Michael and Chris Budd look at the progress so far under the Villa boss and the players that have benefited the most. Plus, they look at the potential issues that may hinder Smith during the rest of the year until the January transfer window.

We also pay tribute to Leicester City's late owner, question the rumoured Super League, address some supporter issues and take a trip down memory lane in the new section 'Where Were you, When We Were Good?' Where we look back to 1996 when a Villa player scoring a hat-trick still finished on the losing side. Are Villa currently lacking such a main man to win games for them or at least go down swinging?

Watch out for a listener question & answers extra show coming out soon.

23 May 2019Wembley Ramifications - The Team Villa Have to Beat00:58:08

It's death or glory time for Dean Smith's Aston Villa, as they stand one game away from a long-awaited return to the Premier League (three seasons has been too long). We've said everything there is to say about Villa, so David and Chris are joined by Max Stokes of Villa on Tour to discuss and analyse our Wembley opponents, Derby County. Or should that be 'Frank Lampard's Derby County'?

While most people in football have made Derby the under dogs, it's a position they thrived upon in their dramatic semi-final win over Leeds, that carried on their momentum from a strong run at the end of the regular season.

The Rams are a team that Villa don't really have any historic beef with, so both sets of supporters will be able to focus on what should be an open game of football to decide the final promotion spot.

We look at Derby's key men, Frank Lampard's time there and what we can expect from the team on the day.

Also, there's a Derby-related Scott Hogan Touch Count Meter and MOMS helps Mr Stokes attend to some other business he currently has on-going.

People...let's get ready to rumble at Wembley!

21 Jun 2018MOMS #46: The Wizard of Xia - Aston Villa's Humbug?01:12:20

The play-off final is lost and Aston Villa FC go into financial meltdown. What happened to the big promises to Villa supporters of Dr Tony Xia? The Chinese chairman sacks the CEO Keith Wyness and tries to organise a rudderless club for a third season in the Championship via conference calls from Bejjing. My Old Man Said's David and Dan pick through the bones of Villa's fiscal woe and farce, while trying to have some laughs along the way in the face of adversity.

There's 'Twitter With Tony' where Villa's 'Yorkshire Tony' reads through his most recent tweets - from Wembley hope to financial despair. While the show's favourite negative robot Negatron declares some affirmative action now that the situation has reached 'Defcon One'.

Show Highlights:

  • Wembley Fallout
  • Xia vs Wyness
  • Cumulative affect of player wages and stockpiling.
  • Early 2018 sh*t hits the fan
  • Improved Football Infrastructure Disfunction?
  • Bruce tactical shortcomings
  • Financial Quandary
  • Horror Show
  • World Cup Influence on Best Solution
  • Bruce Babes False Hope
  • Company House Movements
  • Jury's Out on Xia
  • Wizard of Xia promises
  • Crown Jewels

26 Oct 2018MOMS #55: Movin' on Up With Dean Smith01:04:54

The My Old Man Said podcast team of David Michael, Dan Rodgers and Chris Budd discuss 'Dean Smith's claret and blue army', as it begins to take shape. As well as spotlighting the Head Coach and his two assistants, John Terry and Richard O'Kelly, we look at Villa's new sporting Director and discuss a host of subjects such as the UEFA League of Nations, the manager that got away and his new job, plus, the policing issues around cabbages, drones and streakers.

There's also a new section called 'Where Were You, When We Were Good?' that looks back on a goal that saved Aston Villa's backsides back in 1994.

What's that on the episode cover? I hear you ask. It's a homage to Screamdelica, the great Primal Scream album of 1991. Their Birmingham-born keyboard player Martin Duffy is a massive Villa fan, with whom MOMS has had a couple of good Villa chats with over the years.

Hopefully with Dean Smith, to coin a Primal Scream song title, Aston Villa are finally Moving' on Up.

Also, listener questions are addressed - from the state of the Villa Park catering to whether the “Sitting with Xia” lottery will produce the next Villa centre-back.

14 Jul 2017MOMS Aston Villa Podcast Ep. 22 - Changes at Villa, from FCG to OAPs (including John Terry)00:53:00

As Aston Villa prepare for what has to be a serious Championship promotion assault, David and Dan look at the proposed changes off the field, as detailed in the recent Fan Consultation Group (FCG) meeting, and on it, most notably with the signing of talisman figure John Terry.

Can a team that finished a lowly 13th last season, turn it all around this season to get back amongst the crazy money of the Premier League?

We'll discuss many other factors too, as we begin to rev up for a new season.

We look at Bacuna's glory, Villa CEO Keith Wyness's ban and also Tony Xia's heart surgery, before going into key evolution for Villa supporters and the possible signings to follow JT.

There's also 'Twitter With Tony' and a host of other laughs throughout the podcast show, that to quote Bruce Springsteen, is tougher than the rest.

29 Jan 2019MOMS #62.5: One Game From Promotion, One Day Away From Bankruptcy00:57:45

What better way to brighten the mood for the rest of Aston Villa's campaign in the 2018/19 season, than a belated look back at the highlights and lowlights of the claret and blue year of 2018. From being 90 minutes away from the Premier League to the financial chaos that presented itself as forfeit for Villa losing to Fulham in the play-off final.

2018 was certainly was an eventful year for the club.

David Michael, Dan Rodgers and Chris Budd, ramp up the hilarity as they fondly look back on a year that had a full spectrum of emotions and dubious achievements. From Steve Bruce to Dean Smith, from Glen Whelan to Jack Grealish, and from Tony Xia to NSWE.

The second half of the bonus episode takes in some listener questions that look ahead to the rest of this current season and there's the answer to probably the biggest question of the past year or so...errr, would you rather have Gabby Agbonlahor's head on Steve Bruce's body or Steve Bruce's head on Gabby Agbonlahor's body?

10 Nov 2020A New Premier League Force is Born & 50 Shades of Grealish01:07:58

It could be argued that Aston Villa's 3-0 win away at Arsenal was a more complete performance than their earlier 7-2 battering of Liverpool. From front to back, Dean Smith's men were almost perfect. The football world are starting to take note and get a tad excited.

The My Old Man Said podcast team discuss the Arsenal game, while making a podcast porno about the game and sharing their personal experiences of John Travolta, after Ian Wright compared Villa to Travolta in Saturday Night Fever.

As well as the usual analysis, insight, fun and frolics, we look at more serious issues like PPV, Premier League Rules, Marcus Rashford's good work off the pitch and catch up with the latest Villa happenings.

Former Villa and England international striker Darius Vassell gets the Underrated or Overrated treatment.

24 Oct 2019Jack Grealish Delivers Hope as Villa's VAR Wars Continue01:03:03

Aston Villa finally lifted the curse of the not being able to beat 10-men, at their third attempt, as they overcame further VAR frustration, after Jack Grealish inspired his team to an injury-time victory against Brighton.

David, Dan & Chris discuss the Villa captain's most impressive display so far this season, as well as deconstruct VAR and shed some light on what the club has to say about it, based on the season, so far. The Brighton game at Villa Park is also broken down, as are the various levels of performances across the Villa team.

Also, we look at Ajax fan's master plan for their trip to Chelsea, which they're banned from. The loop hole that potentially allows 21,000 fans to watch Wolves away game at ŠK Slovan Bratislava, that's meant to be behind closed doors. Plus, this week's parliamentary committee on football administration, that raised some eyebrows to the way the bodies that run the game operate.

25 Nov 2018MOMS# 57: Dean Smith's Revolution Begins Big Test and Purslow FCG Meeting01:02:51

The Second City derby marks the start of a long hard winter for Dean Smith's Aston Villa team, that has showed real evidence of potential before the international break. The My Old Man Said podcast looks ahead to the derby and beyond.

Also, the main points from the recent Aston Villa Fan Consultation Group meeting with Aston Villa CEO Christian Purslow are discussed - everything from FFP, naming rights, tannoy systems, social responsibility, the club's media output, to the January transfer window. While we also give our first impressions on the man now running the club.

There's talk of the UEFA Nations League, the recent cheeky Villa-related antics of Nigel Kennedy, and MOMS' recent meeting with some of the European Cup winning side of 1982.

David Michael, Dan Rodgers and Chris Budd also take a trip down memory lane to tackle a Second City derby-related 'Where Were You, When We Were Good?' - the new regular section of the podcast.

And of course, there's plenty of laughs along the way.

25 Aug 2020Dean Smith Reflects on Premier League Naivety as Lack of Transfers Sparks Desperate Clickbait01:03:24

They may have their 2020/21 fixtures, but there's still no new Aston Villa transfers in for the upcoming season. While the market has been stagnant, during Villa's pre-season camp in Wales, Dean Smith reflects on what he's learnt in his first season in the Premier League.

We discuss Villa's new fixtures and away shirts, recent shonky clickbait about Villa players, and a new Youth Academy addition.

Also, we look at the Football Supporters Association 'Sustain the Game' campaign and discuss whether there is a crisis/meltdown at Barcelona.

The always entertaining Under or Overrated section returns to look at the ex-Villa player duo of Brad Guzan and Julian Joachim.

With games fast running out Aston Villa gave themselves a last chance saloon stab at Premier League survival after a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace. It was Villa's first win since January, can they now record back-to-back wins and stay alive?

As well as discussing the events of the Palace game we talk about Villa's new record, Mile Jedinak's retirement, the latest spate of Villa-related racism. We also look at Manchester City's great escape, Wigan woe and next season's TV scheduling.

14 Jan 2021Aston Villa's Academy Steps Up as Club Suffer Covid Setback00:55:20

It's been an unprecedented week at Aston Villa. First a COVID-19 outbreak saw 14 staff test positive, including 9 players from the first team. Then for the first time since 1874, Villa fielded an entire team of debutants against Liverpool in the FA Cup.

We look back at the week and the efforts of Louie Barry and his mates, plus, the latest Villa news and going on's in the football world at large...well, after a random anecdote about the late actor Christopher Lee.

Overrated and Underrated recalls the former Villa academy products, the Moore brothers.

06 Oct 2020Episode 7-2: Aston Villa Reborn After Baptising Liverpool00:35:28

7-2. Aston Villa dismantled Liverpool in spectacular fashion at Villa Park on Sunday night. This is MOMS podcast's first impressions of a result that shocked the football world.

This was a Liverpool team that have been crowned League Champions, European Champions and World Club Champions in the last couple of seasons. While the result is unlikely to have much affect on Liverpool's fortunes this season, it's a huge clue to how Villa could progress this term.

With the team's attacking threat newly charged by the arrival of Ollie Watkins and Ross Barkley, who both have helped Jack Grealish to finally go through the gears at Villa, anything is possible. With Emiliano Martinez and Matty Cash strengthening further a better organised defence, the signs are positive for Dean Smith's men, who are now seven games unbeaten in the Premier League and 100% this season.

Before we get ahead of ourselves though, let's reflect on an incredible game of football.

We also discuss some of Aston Villa's U-23 crop while we watch them play.

28 Feb 2020Aston Villa Life in Los Angeles With Bob Stephenson00:52:15

During Aston Villa's winter break, MOMS took a trip to Los Angeles, USA, and recorded a couple of shows with stateside Villans. In the first of these shows, over a few beers on Sunset Boulevard, we speak to actor and writer Bob Stephenson about all things claret and blue...and, black and gold.

During our chat with the Villan of over 20-years, we find out about being soccer buddies with Tom and Colin Hanks, the intriguing rise of his other team LA FC, US academy development, his hatred of the Europa League, the early years of his Villa love affair and his hopes for Villa's Wembley cup final and much more.

Thanks to the State Social House in LA for hosting us.

Enjoy the show.

06 Jul 2020Taking Inspiration from Liverpool to Tackle United00:25:05

In perhaps their best performance since the restart, Aston Villa gave a lacklustre Liverpool team a game and had chances to open the scoring, until a familiar end to proceedings struck. But are there signs Villa might take something off United?

We provide our reaction to the proceedings at Anfield and look at what Villa can take from the match going into their crucial Villa Park clash with Manchester United. How can Villa have success against the resurgent Red Devils?

We also look at the relegation picture, which Villa are very much in the end game of now.

01 Dec 2019Bonus: The Anti-Preview - Villan Hatred of Manchester United00:29:42

When you get beat 14 consecutive times by a team, you swiftly begin to despise them. In the case of Manchester United, it's not personal, it's just a matter of all those 'Fergie Time' wins, Federico Macheda and them selling us Djemba Djemba (amongst other duds).

In a bonus off-the-cuff show, recorded straight after Episode 92 of the main show, we take a trip down memory lane of playing Manchester United in the past few decades. We discuss the curse of Ronaldo and how Sir Alex had our number, while we try to cling on to Wembley 1994 and Gabby's header at Old Trafford in 2009.

24 Dec 2020The Unapologetic and Dysfunctional Villa Christmas Special - Part 100:50:54

2020...an interesting kind of year. Set for relegation, Aston Villa managed to utilise a global pandemic to hatch a great escape, secure their Premier League status, and then swiftly transition into world beaters at the start of the following season.

To look back on a madcap 12 months for Aston Villa football club, the My Old Man Said team have sat down to knock out a two-part Unapologetic and Dysfunctional Villa Christmas Special.

Who is the 'Villa Player of the Year...that isn't Jack Grealish'? Who is the 'Most Improved Player That Needed to Improve'? What were Villa's best pieces of business - in and out of the club - in 2020? What were the 'Best Limbs Moments of 2020'?

The Unapologetic and Dysfunctional Villa Christmas Special judges these and much, much more.

There's also a few old MOMS favourites too, including a 'Villa Year in a Villa Minute', Five Reasons to be Cheerful and The Good, Bad & Ugly of Villa's year.

And we address Grealish's 'for one game only' Cornish pasty hairdo.

Plus, bells, so many bells!

Enjoy.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our listeners.

19 May 2018MOMS Episode 45: Aston Villa Wembley Parklife Session00:41:56

Aston Villa are now 90 minutes (and maybe some extra-time and penalties) away from a return to the Premier League. My Old Man Said's David and Dan take the podcast into the great outdoors and enjoy a pre-Wembley detox in a Birmingham park, where the park life literally takes over the show in dramatic effect. Warning: there is strong language!

In a more casual than usual setting, we discuss the fallout from the Boro game at Villa Park - from over-hype, giant invisible flags and pitch invasions - and cast our first impressions look at the date with Fulham (aka the Pimms Sippers) at Wembley Stadium.

We also invent the 'Giant Emoji Flag'.

This is one podcast, we should have brought an umbrella for...Not animals were harmed in the making of this podcast...honestly.

Since we recorded this show in a park and the band Blur recorded an album called Parklife and the tour for it stopped off at AstonVilla Leisure Centre in 1994 (you may have seen my ticket for it on the MOMS instagram account / (hear gig here), you can hear the odd Blur homage during the show.

03 Aug 2017MOMS Aston Villa Podcast Ep. 23: A New Hope - Promotion or Bust!01:04:13

Welcome to the 2017/18 season. My Old Man Said podcast's presenters David and Dan look back over Aston Villa's pre-season - the signings, the exits, the hope, the disillusion, the ambition, Bruce's Plan A/B and the goal of promotion.

On route, they also discuss stuff like Sienna Miller, golf, theatre, Villa having five players in a recent England team, and Dan once again explains why he doesn't think football is complicated. Occasionally, they are rudely interrupted by Negatron.

Jedinak's Jungle is back in all of it's glory, plus there's a few outtakes scattered around the place.

Warning: We don't take anything too seriously, so there's always a few laughs along the way.

02 Apr 2020The Trials and Tribulations of Jack Grealish (Power Rating Episode: Part One)00:43:18

As the pandemic begins to ramp up in the UK, lockdown fever already seems to be gripping some people, including Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish, who committed a massive hypocritical faux pas mere hours after pleading to fans to stay home to help the NHS.

Due to the lengthy nature of the discussion on Grealish, in what was supposed to be an episode focused on the Top Ten Villa Player Power Rankings for the season, the episode has been split into two parts.

In this part, David, Chris, Max and Phil discuss the latest Villa issues (including Grealish's misdemeanour), as well as going through the three points of the week, including the likely end to this season and the implications it may bring to clubs.

Part two, with the full Villa player power rankings that were voted on by MOMS Patrons, will be released very soon.

03 Dec 2018MOMS# 57.5: The City is Ours...Again - A View From the Balcony00:35:17

A somewhat alternative take on the latest Second City Derby. From Rio to Moseley, from shadowing the police to discovering away fan cabbages, and viewing Villa's glory on the pitch from an iron balcony overlooking the Holte End, we look back at an eventful Second City derby.

My Old Man Said's David Michael is joined by Dan Rodgers and Chris Budd to discuss a true turning point in Aston Villa's season, as Dean Smith's team proves their resurgence is for real.

And, as usual, there's plenty of laughs along the way.

26 Jan 2021Dean Smith Breaks Curse to Return Villa to Winning Ways00:49:31

It's often said that winning the Manager of the Month award brings a curse of bad results. After winning the award in December, Dean Smith saw his team winless in 2021 and hit by a Covid outbreak. A 2-0 win against Newcastle soon broke the spell though.

Speaking of curses, as well as discussing Villa's home win over a returning Steve Bruce's Newcastle United, we look at various alleged incidents of witchcraft, superstition and voodoo in football from around the world in the past couple of weeks.

As well as talk of a Villa transfer, we look at the latest incarnation of an attempt of a European Super League.

Overrated or Underrated sees ex-Villa and Newcastle midfielder Nobby Solano under the microscope.

02 May 2019The Rise of Resilient Villa and the Major Championship Play-off Issues00:59:32

The MOMS podcast looks at some of the major questions on the eve of the Championship play-offs. Are Leeds United fading post-Spygate, after they broke the traditional Christmas promotion guarantee? Why haven't Villa beaten any of the top four Championship teams? What is Villa's potentially toughest play-off test?

Also, David and Chris look back in detail at the sh*t show at Elland Road and what Villa proved in it, as well as casting an eye ahead to the dead rubber Villa Park finale against potential Championship title winners elect, Norwich City.

Expect a triple Scott Hogan Touch Count Meter treat and much more, including some very odd behaviour from Sheffield Wednesday and some connecting of dots between David De Gea and Bolton Wanderers.

22 Jun 2020Message to Dean Smith After Villa Show Lack of Urgency00:28:54

Despite a close looking 2-1 scoreline Aston Villa were unceremoniously swept aside by Chelsea at Villa Park. Is there scope for Dean Smith to make tactical changes to get a tune out of this crop of players? We may have one solution.

In a bolt-on podcast to episode 107, we catch up on events at Villa Park, as the team show little desire in the final stages of a game they some how still had a chance to rescue something from.

24 Mar 2021Aston Villa Must Address Fundamentals to Get Their Mojo Back00:42:04

The players know it, Dean Smith knows it and as MOMS has been saying for some time, Villa have been below their par for the 2021 part of this season. It's not longer about the perspective of last season, the here and now needs addressing.

The show highlights what is wrong with Villa at the moment and why suggesting it's all about Jack Grealish's absence is glossing over some obvious concerns. We look back at Villa's avoidable home defeat to Spurs and catch up on the latest Villa news, the highlight being Ollie Watkins call-up to the England squad.

We also take a look at the potential scope of merging the Belgian and Dutch leagues, Angel Di Maria's bizarre substitution and Bono's injury-time goal.

Overrated or Underrated looks at a player with one of the shortest Villa careers - Robbie Keane.

29 Nov 2017MOMS Ep.34 - Piano Man, Tractor Boys and Departing Doctor Xia00:53:05

The MOMS podcast takes an irreverent look at another week of Villa madness.

David and Dan discuss Aston Villa's new Piano Man, the rubbish modern day version of the Peaker Blinders and 'Proper Football Men', before getting to grips with the controlled execution of Ipswich and the issues it threw up.

They discuss the secret behind Albert Adomah's rise this season, the rebirth of Glenn Whelan, Samba's magical knock out blow and the quest to replace John Terry.

They also look forward to the Leeds United clash and consider how Villa will fare in the Doomsday December set of fixtures.

Also, there's the return of 'Twitter With Tony', with the Yorkshire accented Doctor seemingly a busy bee in the past week, although he still found time to invent 'the winning goal'.

In a new closing segment provisionally entitled 'Under Der Hammer', verdicts are given on whether the persistent #BruceOut boys and girls should call a truce and whether Ross McCormack could still be an option for Villa come January.

22 Jan 2020What's Samatta Deeney? Villa Grab Season-Defining Win00:33:23

It was a dramatic and potentially season-defining night at Villa Park as Watford came seeking to do the double over their relegation rivals. A six-point swing to the Hornets would have seen Villa growing roots in the relegation zone, but alas after an injury-time 2-1 win, they escaped the drop zone.

In a bonus MOMS show, David and Chris look back at a Villa Park night that travelled a full spectrum of emotion. Along the way, we contemplate the enigmas that are Douglas Luis, Danny Drinkwater and the Villa back three. We also look at the incoming striker Mbwana Samatta.

This show is dedicated to the Villa Park ball boys - good job lads!

17 Feb 2021Current Aston Villa Limitations Exposed and Possible Solutions00:52:19

Not for the first time this season, Aston Villa's midfield was overrun, as Brighton's press frustrated and neutralised a Villa team that eventually was lucky to escape the Amex with a point, thanks to Emilio Martínez and his back four.

The 0-0 draw at the Amex Stadium wasn't the first time we've seen Villa struggle against a high energy midfield. Is Dean Smith's perceived first XI up to the job against such teams? Or does he need to make adjustments? We look at the Villa midfield situation and the midfield personnel searching for solutions.

Also in the show, there's talk of compromised zoom calls, bizarre reasons to postpone football games, the retirement of Ron Vlaar and Jacob Ramsey's new contract.

Overated or underrated features ex-Villa and Brighton midfielder Steve Sidwell.

10 Feb 2021Aston Villa's Season Still Full of Opportunity & the Question of Barkley00:48:21

After a poor performance and defeat against the Hammers, Aston Villa rallied well to beat an Arsenal team for the third time on the trot in the Premier League, and record the first double over the Gunners since the 1992/1993 season.

The MOMS team discuss the impressive Villa rearguard action after taking an early lead against Arsenal, as well as clearing up Mikel Arteta's claims of injustice. They look at the question mark over Ross Barkley's role in the Villa team in the short and long term. Plus, highlight how important Ollie Watkins is to the team.

Outside of Villa, the Three Points features: Chesterfield vaccine queue jumpers, a big step up for women referees and the legend of 'El Loco' and his world record of playing for 30 clubs.

The subject of the latest episode of 'Under or Overrated' is the Swiss former Gunner and Villa centre-back Philippe Senderos.

28 Apr 2021Aston Villa Accountability on and off the Pitch Examined00:47:38

A 2-2 draw at Villa Park against West Brom, while not the greatest result, saw Keinan Davis's first Premier League goal and the long-awaited return of Wesley. The game also raised a season-long question, are Villa's substitutions proactive enough?

Meanwhile, off the pitch, Villa's yearly accounts were issued and the court case began of two police PC's in relation to their liability in relation to the death of former Villa striker Dalian Atkinson. Elsewhere, there was differing fortunes for both Villa's Women and Youth teams.

Outside of Villa, we welcome familiar faces back to the Premier League, look at referees taking liberties with the 90 minutes of the game, and look at Bayern Munich's approach to manager compensation.

In Overrated or Underrated we look at Pep Guardiola's invisible captain, who used to play for Villa.

Enjoy.

18 Mar 2021The Split Personality of Aston Villa 20/2101:00:25

Aston Villa's 1-1 draw against Newcastle was typical of the performances Villa have served up in 2021. There's none of the confidence or fluidity of the team that started the season with such swagger. What's gone wrong?

As well as discussing the difference of the second half of the season so far, to the first, the MOMS team round up the latest Villa news before tackling Three Points, that take in the Football Stock Exchange, an odd football broadcasting subscription idea and football Greenland style.

Overrated and Underrated looks at Steve Watson...and his film career.

08 Jul 2021England and Jack Grealish Make History and Set up Italian Job00:31:29

Unless you were on this earth in 1966 you'd have never seen England win a major tournament semi-final.

You'd probably never seen a player 'subbed subbed' in a semi-final either. While Jack Grealish taking one for the team riled up some Villa fans, the big picture is England fans are in dreamland. A final between England vs Italy could be epic and see the single mindedness of Gareth Southgate win out against his doubters. The MOMS match reaction to a unique night at Wembley. UTV

07 Aug 2019Aston Villa Premier League Transfers and Squad Assessment01:12:53

It's the last show before Aston Villa begin their Premier League campaign at the impressive new stadium of Tottenham Hotspur. We look at how Villa look in all departments - goalkeeper, defence, midfield and attack - after their big summer business.

Also, MOMS caught up with former Villa midfield favourite Ian Taylor to get his views on the current Villa squad, the club's transfer business and his hopes for the season.

As well as providing predictions for Villa in their return to the Premier League, the title winners and the relegation three, we also take a look at Harry Maguire's record transfer, crisis clubs like Bolton and how a harmonica was recently used in a game of football.

Plus, as always, lots more.

15 Feb 2019MOMS #63: More Needed Than Blades Miracles for Play-offs01:09:14

It'll take more than a mad last eight minute miracle to provide a spark to revive Aston Villa's flagging play-off hopes after an away defeat against Brentford made it two win in Dean Smith's last 12 games in charge. We look at Smith's transfer window and all the other business connected to Villa - from Mings' stamp to Villa's failure to deliver in recent weeks.

As well as the Villa discussion, analysis and laughs, we look back at the big news in recent weeks, including the sad news at Cardiff City, the 'Monaco Syndrome' and the Notts County chairman's dick pic scandal.

Also in the episode is an exclusive competition to win two VIP tickets to Villa Park for the Middlesbrough game on the 16th March.

The 'Where Were You, When We Were Good?' section goes back to the FA Cup 6th round in 2010, when Villa in the Premier League under Martin O'Neill, were one game away from Wembley, but found themselves 2-0 down at half-time away to Championship Reading.

19 Oct 2018MOMS #54: Ron Atkinson Interview Remix Special00:59:54

My Old Man Said goes back in the archives for our newer listeners to put together a special on former Aston Villa boss Ron Atkinson, who played a brand of football, present Villa boss Dean Smith will be looking to emulate. As well as discussion on Big Ron between David Michael and Chris Budd, we revisit an improvised 'Big Fat Ron Claret & Blue Army' podcast segment set in 1991 and also rerun the MOMS interview with Ron Atkinson from two seasons ago that took place at Villa Park.

The interview, which takes up the second half of the show, covers everything from Ron potentially getting the Villa job earlier than he did, the title race with Manchester United, 1994 cup final gambles, almost losing £10,000 cash in Grimsby, funny stories from his Sheffield Wednesday days, plus a load of football anecdotes with a cast including Brian Clough, Paul McGrath, Graham Taylor, Andy Gray, Shaun Teale, Carlton Palmer, David Hirst and Doug Ellis.

22 Dec 2020Aston Villa's Squad Completes Unbeaten Pre-Christmas December00:42:37

After a late win against Wolves followed their postponed Newcastle game, Aston Villa carried on life without Ross Barkley by going unbeaten for December before Christmas Day with a 0-0 draw against Burnley and a win at West Brom.

Villa now boast the highest average shots per game tally of the whole Premier League. Couple that with the fact Villa have recorded clean sheets in their last three games and you have the foundations for a successful team. The Christmas period of games will no doubt tell us more, as Barkley finally returns to the action.

In this catch-up show we discuss both the Burnley and West Brom games, while looking at other footballing issues like the five sub rule failing to get the vote, Big Sam's return to the Premier League and Robert Lewandowski winning FIFA player of the year.

Watch out the MOMS Christmas Show coming soon...

After a break of a few weeks due to personal and technical issues the My Old Man Said podcast returns to catch up on a issues in the Villa universe. We look at Tony Xia's focus turning from this season to next, his request for ideas for improved match experience at Villa Park (adult mascots!!!) and what went wrong this season.

This episode was scheduled for realise last month but has been re-edited for release now as a stop gap show, before we come back firing on all cylinders.

Update - Dan has a new laptop, so all should be good now on the technical side of things.

We're very much now looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.

27 Aug 2021Something for the Weekend - Villa's Key Fitness Concern & Good Loan Move00:26:10

The second of back-to-back home Premier League games for Aston Villa sees the visit of Dean Smith's old chargers, Brentford. A team that Villa have failed to beat in each of their last six encounters. Will Ollie Watkins win his fitness battle to feature against his former team?

A win would set Villa up nicely for the international break, from which they'll return a stronger team, as injuries clear up.

Is Wesley's loan move out a good one? That and more discussed.

11 Sep 2021Key Aston Villa Players Begin to Return for Chelsea Test00:23:08

The Argentine international situation is ultimately a shame for Aston Villa, as Dean Smith would have been able to pick a relatively full-strength team. We'll have to wait until Everton for Martinez and Buendia to return, but it should be interesting to see the likes of Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins start at Stamford Bridge.

We catch up on the happenings since Villa last played.

18 Sep 2021Argentine Concern Threatens Season's First Full-Strength Villa Team00:25:23

Is Dean Smith playing mind games with Everton over Villa's Argentine duo Emi Buendia and Emiliano Martínez returning back to the UK on the day of the game?
