Episode 5 -  Yvonne Mwale - Performer

A global artist by any measure, the eclectically versatile and ever-passionate Yvonne Mwale returns this year with her fourth album release, the brilliantly vibrant and immersive ‘Free Soul’.

From difficult beginnings, growing up as an orphan in Zambia, Yvonne’s journey through life has been one that ultimately showcases an entirely unique style and perspective in her music. Currently residing in Germany, Yvonne works hard to leave her struggles behind her, to move on from the past and embrace a brighter future with open arms. ‘Free Soul’ is absolutely an embodiment of that progression and intention.

A supreme collection of original recordings, designed to provoke feelings of energy and blissful escapism, ‘Free Soul’ incorporates tribal rhythms and a number of different genres and styles. Leading with an organic world music vibe, yet skilfully fusing this with multiple layers of pop, jazz and even EDM, the album is an easy must for world music and pop fans far and wide. Wherever the moment takes her, the songs represent this in a unique instance of expression and creative freedom. Even amidst such variety though, Yvonne’s inherent connection to her roots can always be relied upon to breathe life and authenticity into the process.

Far from a new starter, Yvonne has already performed at a plethora of international music festivals, and has bagged a handful of impressive awards along the way. In 2009 she won Best Upcoming Female Artist at the Ngoma Awards in Zambia. That same year she took home an award at the CrossRoads InterRegio Festival. In 2013, her well-travelled nature found her as a finalist at the RFI Prix Decouverté in France, and in 2018 she took second place at the World Citizen Artists Awards in Jamaica.

The journey has been a long and unpredictable one, but these qualities and experiences undoubtedly shine with stunning brightness throughout this latest project. From mellow layers of melody to choir-like harmonious anthems and outright dance-floor smashes, ‘Free Soul’ encapsulates precisely the concept implied by its title. Yvonne Mwale is a free soul, through and through. A talented, emotionally intentional and musically skilful artist, who we can expect and hope to see performing on stages across the globe in 2020 and beyond.

Being a trans man in Cardiff, Wales, in 2023 may involve a variety of experiences, as attitudes and inclusivity can vary within different communities and environments. Wales, in recent years, has made efforts to be more inclusive and supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, including transgender individuals.

In Cardiff, as in many urban areas, there may be more resources, support groups, and awareness of transgender issues. The city may offer more inclusive spaces, both socially and within institutions. However, the level of inclusivity can also depend on individual attitudes and specific circumstances.

It's important to note that while progress has been made, challenges and varying degrees of acceptance can still exist. Some trans individuals may face discrimination or encounter less understanding in certain situations. On the positive side, awareness campaigns, advocacy efforts, and legal protections have been implemented to foster a more inclusive environment

In addition to his musical pursuits, Casper has dedicated himself to comprehensive research on Trans Inclusion and Safety. His focus extends to understanding the unique challenges faced by transgender individuals within the music industry and at live events in Wales. With a grant from Becon Cmyrru Wales, he founded Transform Music, a platform that amplifies the voices and experiences of transgender artists.

Casper actively engages in discussions about the publication of his research findings, shedding light on the intricacies of being a transgender individual in the music scene. Along the way, he has confronted and triumphed over numerous issues and barriers, paving the way for his current position. His journey not only exemplifies personal growth but also serves as an inspiration for others facing similar challenges.

Stay tuned for the revelations of Casper James' research, a testament to his commitment to fostering inclusion, safety, and understanding within the music community in Wales. Through Transform Music, he continues to break down barriers, advocating for a more diverse and accepting space for all.

07 Jan 2024Austel - Annie Rew Shaw - What's It Like Being A Female Producer, Artist & Sound Engineer00:33:47

Send us a text

Austel - aka Annie Rew Shaw - is a Devon-born London-based artist, songwriter and producer, crafting introspective, brooding music led by ethereal vocals and intimate lyricism.

Influenced by a wide range of artists spanning from Bon Iver to Thom Yorke, Cocteau Twins to Jon Hopkins, Nick Cave to Elliott Smith, Austel fuses her background in classical music and songwriting with ambient textures, cinematic soundscapes and contemplative electronica.

Having cut her teeth as a session musician performing at Glastonbury Festival, supporting Fleet Foxes, and touring the UK with multiple bands, Austel began collaborating with guitarist, producer and music technologist Adam Stark (MiMU Gloves, Rumour Cubes) - developing her own songs with a fresh lens.

Austel’s 2018 self-released debut EP ‘Unfold’ received plaudits from the likes of BBC 6 Music, Killing Moon and The Line of Best Fit, while 2020’s ‘Cold Love’ drew further support from O2 Music, BBC Introducing and Fresh On The Net. In 2022, she released ‘Feathers’ - a ghostly, piano-based reworking of her discography to date, followed by dream-pop single ‘Cut Me Down’, a collaboration with artist/producer Ruby Smith aka post-dusk.

Austel’s single ‘Beds Of Stone’ was co-produced with Grammy-award-winning producer and engineer Guy Massey (The Beatles, Manic Street Preachers, Richard Hawley), and featured on Spotify UK & Ireland’s Fresh Finds, RTÉ, Amazing Radio & BBC Introducing. Her highly-anticipated debut album is scheduled for release in February 2024.

25 Jan 2024Joshua (Satch) Satchell - What is It Like Being a Trans (male) Singer / Songwriter in the UK music Industry ?00:29:42

Send us a text

Small town born and fled, Joshua ‘SATCH’ Satchell migrated to Brighton to pursue his songwriting career, eventually forming and fronting the band ‘‘Frankie Furlow’, with long time collaborator Will Nash. The project enjoyed early success and performed at major festivals such as Glastonbury, The Great Escape and Reeperbahn and at venues across the UK and Europe, but something was missing.

After coming out as Trans, his voice breaking and the lowering of the keys of many songs, it was time to write some new ones.

With lyrical candor, genre-queer pop arrangements, and a band of talented friends alongside him, SATCH began sharing his story at Pride festivals all over the country, including headlining the first ever trans led stage at Pride in London.
Simultaneously, the young wordsmith was inspired to help others to tell their stories, and started co-writing with artists and producers around the globe, while also interviewing various trans voices on his esteemed podcast ‘Satch and Leo’s Transmission’.

His ground-breaking, autobiographical debut album “Present In The Post'' was released in October 2023. Launched to a packed out Phoenix arts club in London, one music journalist remarked ‘'Satch is one of the most impressive new songwriters of this year. He speaks from the heart and stands out from the crowd’.

Sonically connecting with the marginalized, SATCH isn’t a project aiming to change the music industry. SATCH is a project aiming to change the world.

24 Feb 2024Fiona Ross - What Is It Like Being a Female Jazz Artist, Community Builder & Journalist ?00:32:08

Send us a text

Named among the 100 Alternative Power Music List for 2020, multi-award winning jazz artist, editor-in-chief, journalist and founder of the award winning Women in Jazz Media organisation Fiona Ross never stops. As vocalist, pianist, composer and producer, Fiona has become known for creating her own contemporary jazz sound incorporating fast paced Latin Jazz, vintage Jazz club, a little neo soul along with heart wrenching ballads. She came to the worlds attention as ‘the artist that gave Ed Sheeran his ‘first push’ but very quickly established herself as an artist in her own right and has received incredible reviews and awards across the globe for all of her albums.

Her live performances have seen her perform at prestigious venues including 606 Club, Pizza Express, Hampstead jazz Club, Nells Jazz and Blues, Jazz Café Posk and Toulouse Lautrec and festivals such as the EFG London Jazz Festival and her music is played on radio stations all over the world.

Fiona has achieved many accolades for her work including Best Jazz Song from the World Songwriting Awards, Outstanding achievement awarded by the Global Music Awards and International female songwriter of the year from the International Singer Songwriters Association. She has been featured in many publications including Tinnitist, Jazziz, Record World Magazine, Jazz Corner, Ink 19 and Jazz Quarterly. Fiona’s song ‘Mistress’ which was recorded live in a stairwell, was selected to be included in the British Library archives for prosperity.

There has rarely been a day since then for Fiona that has not centered around
music. Enrolled in dance, drama and singing lessons at the age of two, piano at age six. At what moment did Fiona make a conscious choice to pursue a career in music? There wasn't a moment. There was never a time when there was any other choice. By the age of eight years old Fiona was starring in London's West End. Talent like Fiona's doesn't go unnoticed; soon she was signed to an agency and was featured in a string of television commercials and print advertisements and was recording radio jingles for everything from ketchup to Fairy dishwashing soap.

At the age of fourteen she lied about her age and talked her way into gigging on weekends in jazz clubs throughout London, from the classy nightspots of the elite to some rather seedy pubs that were no place for an ordinary teenager. There were never any contracts to sign, it was always cash in hand at the end of the night. No one even suspected that a voice that startling in its maturity and passion could belong to a singer barely into her teens. Fiona says “ Telling them that I had a job singing and playing Jazz as a solo artist in a club in London, I was so thrilled, but they were furious - well, I was only 14 at the time. ”

Fiona attended the prestigious Arts Educational School (the English equivalent of New York's High School for Performing Arts) where Julie Andrews, Catherine Zeta Jones and Will Young, to name just a few, also trained. Fiona's career has taken her all over the musical map. She has worked as a musical director, session musician, composer, choreographer, director, dancer, actor, model - She even sang back-up for a rock and roll band called Rocking Willie and the Y-Fronts when she was 15.

Alongside this, educating young people has been Fiona’s passion and she was Head of British Academy of New Music, London, for nearly nine years, where she was responsible for the training of Ed Sheeran, Rita Ora and Jess Glynne, to name a few.

Rory Jack McDonald, a Canadian music professional, born on March 13th, 2001, in Toronto, Canada, discovered his passion for music at the age of 3 when he received a harmonica. By age 4, he began piano lessons, and at 6, he started performing. Throughout his childhood and teens, Rory showcased his talents at pubs, galas, and blues festivals. Self-taught on various instruments, including guitar, drums, bass, and accordion, he expanded his musical repertoire.

After playing trumpet in a regional arts high school program, Rory decided to pursue his musical passion. In 2019, he was accepted into Berklee College of Music on guitar, where he delved into music production, and songwriting, and honed his instrumental skills. 29 Oct 2024Mark Noble - Disability & Sustainability in Arts & Culture00:31:08

Send us a text

Mark Noble is an English artist based in Somerset, UK. His works shine a new light on the under-valued aspects of the world in which we live. Often specialising in landscape paintings and abstract work, he infuses his worlds with a melancholic and spiritual beauty.

After a difficult time at school (dealing with autism and severe dyslexia) and spending nearly 20 years working in a local plastics factory, Mark set out to pursue his dream of becoming an artist. Inspired by the work of Turner, he expresses the mystical, dream-like and sublime, through delicate attention to the commonplace or overlooked.

Mark has exhibited paintings across the UK and Europe and has received interest from as far afield as South America. He is currently running art workshops to encourage those who, like him, have creative dreams yet to be fully realised.

Work was recently sold at a large exhibition in London (the OXO Gallery) to raise awareness of Parkinson’s Disease and paintings are on display in several other galleries around England. In March 2021, Mark became an ambassador for a charity called 'Outside In' – their aim is to assist and promote disabled artists. He is also busy working on private commissions, exhibiting, developing new ideas and getting children involved with art (one Lottery-funded project involved children painting a mural at a local school in Glastonbury). In 2022, Mark also became an 'Inclusivity Ambassador' for 'Creative Portal'. This is an innovative website where artists from all disciplines can showcase their portfolios to industry professionals. Mark is helping to attract charities/organisations and encourage disadvantaged young people to sign up, get involved and express themselves creatively.

Moving forward, Mark wants to promote environmentally friendly art as much as possible. His ‘Driftwood Collection’ features art painted on recycled materials such as old tiles, window frames, bark and even old coffee table tops!

She revels in the making of chai, this earthy elixir that reminds her of the power of each brown-skinned woman. Patty has written for Thrive Global, The Southern Poverty Law Center and other publications, and was selected to give a TEDx talk on changing the narrative of inequity. Andy created Viva La Visa in 2009 and now has a team of visa and immigration specialists for the music and creative industry (and beyond), who aim to streamline the visa application process and enhance the overall experience.

Viva La Visa is a one stop shop when it comes to passport and visa needs, with a high success rate and an array of experience, the team focus on providing seamless hassle-free visa services across all nationalities and to any destination.

Viva La Visa was created by Andy Corrigan in 2009. As an experienced musician and touring veteran he wanted to ensure that tour managers, as well as other organisations, have access to assistance when it comes to navigating the complicated 'minefield' of visas, work permits and travel documentation. Our experienced team of visa experts are dedicated to working closely with clients to ensure the best chance of success with all applications. With an office based in scenic Suffolk, we make sure to place you in the best possible position for a positive outcome.

We have a high rate of returning customers and word of mouth referrals, and we strive to offer excellent customer service drawing from our combined knowledge and practice.

Many of our clients use us as a ‘one-stop-shop’ when it comes to their passport and visa needs as we simply take the stress out of the process. Showbiz travel can be a complicated undertaking, and if done incorrectly can restrict future travel plans, and thus impact on a career overseas.

Although the music industry is still central to the company today, we have organically grown over the years and now we work with actors of both the stage and silver screen with varying levels of distinction, models, sports stars, business executives, conference delegates and sightseers!

The fashion industry is thriving, we assist model agencies with visas and passports for their models and photographers based all across the world. Andy has a company that works with the best of the best including Elton John, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran & Dua Lipa ..

13 Dec 2024From Video Store Dreams to Big Screens: Tom Jolliffe on Writing, Producing & Crafting Horror Hits00:26:35

Send us a text

Tom Jolliffe is a screenwriter, producer and film journalist, known for Renegades (2022), War of the Worlds: The Attack (2022), Cinderella's Revenge (2023) and The Baby in the Basket (2024).

He grew up in Marlow, England with a passion for cinema that began in the video store aisles. After studying film at university he focused more on writing film reviews including some guest reviews for publications like Aint it Cool and Moviehole, before becoming a regular contributor (and still remains so) for popular UK film site, Flickering Myth.

With an interest in screenwriting, he began focusing increasingly on trying to get scripts made, coming close to selling a number of shorts and features (which fell at the final hurdle). He then took to producing to take more control over the outcome and co-produced Out (2015) an award-winning short film starring Shone Romulus (Top Boy) and Joerg Stadler (Saving Private Ryan).

After successfully following up with a number of award-winning short films, he transitioned to features writing low-budget horror films, including Amityville Witches, Jurassic Island and Jack and Jill, which have all been released worldwide on DVD and VOD.

In 2020 he signed on to write the star-studded revenge film, Renegades (2021), starring Lee Majors, Danny Trejo, Michael Pare, Tiny Lister, Billy Murray and Ian Ogilvy. In 2022 he signed on to work with Mark L. Lester (Commando) on Cinderella's Revenge (Natasha Henstridge) the first of four horror adaptations with Lester as producer.

He continued to write regular features, jumping between several genres before looking to produce his own films. After working with long-time friend, Nathan Shepka on the critically acclaimed When Darkness Falls (2022), the pair collaborated once again on The Baby in the Basket (Maryam d'Abo, Paul Barber) joined by Gary Collinson, the editor-in-chief of Flickering Myth for whom Jolliffe has written articles since 2010.

He also began working on the Singaporean production, The Hungry One based upon Chinese folklore, as well as ghostwriting several projects. In April 2024, the film Cinderella's Revenge was released in US cinema, with more international theatrical releases following. He also has several projects in development with LA-based producer, Jane Chua including the psychological horror, Psykhe and apocalypse horror, Demon Hunter.

The future will see Jolliffe continue to work for hire, (but more selectively) whilst producing his own films, beginning with the psychological drama, We Go Again.

Turned down writing Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey due to a schedule conflict.
Plays guitar and has composed several of his own films.
Has had three films feature on Red Letter Media (a show he's a fan of). Mega Lightning was reviewed on an episode of Best of the Worst. Amityville Witches and Ouija Hosts are both referenced in the episode, Beyond the Black Void: Watchbait.
Also writes scripts for Youtube videos, particularly on the subject of soccer. The videos have accumulated 10s of millions of views.
Comes from a musical family. His uncle Steve is a former member of Tangerine Dream. His Uncle John was in a band called Big Big Sun, which had one album released in the US and featured on Baywatch (1989). His cousin Ben was in the British rock group, Young Guns whose song Bones was used as entrance music by The Undertaker (WWE) once.

Send us a text

The East London School of Music (ELSOM) was formed to provide an affordable, stimulating musical training platform of the highest standard to music students of all levels and all ages. We cater for ages from 5 years all the way to adult. Our relaxing and supportive environment allow Students and Tutors to flourish and work together to develop and enhance everyone’s musical abilities, including composition and performance. We aim to ensure that children, young people and adults are given the opportunity to be creative whilst learning the proper way to play an instrument, become a singer and/or become composers in their own right.

At ELSOM we ensure that all students receive high quality classical music tuition. Our school is a non-profit musical organization, therefore you will not be paying huge amounts of money, we keep our fees low and affordable for anyone wanting to learn a musical skill. Our primary aim is to give students quality musical training that is both affordable and enjoyable.

Myself and my team at the East London School of Music are on a mission to raise funds so that we can put musical instruments in the hands of disadvantaged children, young people and senior adults. Most of our students are from the black and ethnic minorities who cannot otherwise afford classical music training and we just want to make classical music more accessible for them. Talent is everywhere, opportunity is not, and I'm on a mission to address that. Our main challenge at the moment is funding. I am looking to connect with people to who can help us, and I am so glad to have connected with Mark and ACN – without this connection, I would not have had the opportunity to connect with you guys 😊

We were involved in a really exciting project from Jan-May 2024 – Community Orchestra Project involving 53 BAME children and young people aged 8-19 years.

Amsterdam chapter of The shesaid.so community of women, gender nonconforming people, and allies in the music industry.

We are thrilled to reignite the Amsterdam chapter of Shesaid.so. Our city is known for creativity, tolerance and pushing boundaries and therefore it's only natural that we relaunch a community that mirrors this same spirit.

Our objective is to establish an inclusive and comprehensive platform dedicated to supporting women in music at every stage of their careers, including students, junior-level professionals, seniors, and those in C-suite positions. We want to foster a vibrant community where individuals from both Dutch and international backgrounds can unite, share their experiences, and collaborate with one another. We believe it is imperative to cultivate an enjoyable and engaging atmosphere where members can connect and find inspiration while building meaningful relationships within the music community.

As Programme Lead for Postgraduate Hospitality, Events, and Tourism at the Oxford School of Hospitality Management, she’s shaping future industry leaders. With a PhD in Culture, Media, and the Creative Industries from King’s College London, her research explores how politics and identity shape festivals and cultural events—key themes that resonate in the music industry. Now, as Associate Dean of Postgraduate Studies at Oxford Brookes Business School, she’s driving forward the SHAPE agenda, highlighting the social and economic impact of the creative industries. Whether examining the cultural power of music festivals or advocating for diverse voices in events, Nicole is deeply concerned about inclusion and representation issues in the creative industries and wider society.

Dr Rosa Codina is a Senior Lecturer in Events and Tourism Management at Oxford Brookes University. She teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the subjects of tourism impact analysis, global events operations, global events and society, and co-leads qualitative research seminars for PhD students at the Business School.

Rosa’s research focuses on the socio-cultural and political impacts of tourism and events in the Global South, with an emphasis on host communities and historically underrepresented groups. Her work examines the experiences of women and other underrepresented individuals in the tourism industry, as well as the influence of tourism and events on gender norms and values. She is particularly interested in working with communities affected by tourism and event development.

Rosa earned her PhD from Oxford Brookes University, where she conducted an ethnographic study on the role of tourism in shaping local power dynamics in Pisac, Peru. Her research critically examined how tourism influences community relationships, with a specific focus on women and those with limited influence in local decision-making.
