Murder Sheet (MurderSheet)

On November 17, 1978, four young employees began the night shift at the Burger Chef restaurant in Speedway, Indiana. By midnight, they had vanished, never to be seen alive again. Two days later, their bodies were found in a wooded area in Johnson County.

To this day, no one has been convicted of the Burger Chef murders, as they came to be known. But the young victims — Jayne, Ruth, Danny, and Mark — and the brutal way they died have not been forgotten. The unsolved case continues to haunt loved ones, investigators, and the communities of Speedway and the greater Indianapolis area. 

Brand new podcast Murder Sheet will launch with an inaugural six-part miniseries delving into the Burger Chef murders. Titled "You Never Can Forget," the miniseries will debut on November 17.

Cohosts Áine Cain and Kevin Greenlee will be taking a close look at the facts of the case, and a number of twisty, fraught theories that have arisen over the years. Kevin is a lawyer from Broad Ripple who began researching the case in 2016 after coming across the online community dedicated to discussing the murders. He now represents the sister of one of the victims. Áine is a journalist from New York who became obsessed with the case while writing a feature story on the murders for Insider. 

 After the six-part series concludes, Murder Sheet will continue as a weekly podcast focusing on different crimes and topics in the world of criminal justice. The show's first season will cover the phenomenon of restaurant homicides and shine a spotlight on the violent underbelly of the fast food industry. 

The podcast's title is a reference to the spreadsheet of around 1,000 homicides involving restaurants, bars, and other eateries that Kevin and Áine have compiled, starting with 17th century tavern shootouts and ending with the modern rage slayings that often occur in burger joints.

Could a missing man accused of killing his girlfriend be responsible for the Burger Chef murders? Or is he yet another victim?

This episode covers one of the most confounding theories in the Burger Chef case. In 1981, Indiana State Police detectives Jim Cramer and Donovan Lindsay received a call from a jailhouse counselor. A young man was claiming to have information on the Burger Chef murders — an eyewitness account, in fact.

Allen Pruitt went on to tell police he saw two men abduct the employees from the restaurant three years before. And he named names, telling detectives exactly who he saw force the four victims out of the Burger Chef.

But revelations from yet another informant ultimately throw everything about Pruitt's story into question.

Allen Pruitt was more than a witness in the Burger Chef case.

He told police in 1981 that he almost became a victim himself, saying that he barely escaped the two killers the day after the murders. He said that he ran for his life through the woods after Tim Willoughby and Jeff Reed lured him out to a lonely country road called the Devil's Backbone.

But a deposition from a different police informant concerning yet another unsolved murder upended Pruitt's version of events.

Emile "Bob" Zaniboni never came home one cold winter's night, over half a century ago. The next morning, his family discovered him murdered in the Cattle Car Restaurant he owned and operated alongside New York State Route 22, between Pawling and Wingdale. He'd been shot three times with a .22 caliber weapon, and his restaurant had been ransacked.

To this day, the crime remains unsolved.

Early on a summer morning in 1919, cops and robbers faced off in Sioux City, Iowa.

On early autumn night in 1971, two creepy men visited Winchell's Donut Shop in Salt Lake City. Sherman McCrary and Carl Taylor sipped on coffee, and directed profane remarks at other customers. Then, when the shop had cleared out, they kidnapped Sheri Martin, the young clerk on duty.

In 1967, two young women working at High's Ice Cream in Staunton, Virginia were shot to death at work. Decades later, one of their coworkers, Sharron Smith, confessed on her deathbed to the killings.

But that wasn't the end of the story. For some, it was just the beginning. William "Bill" Thomas, a man who had been acquitted of one of the murders, brought a lawsuit against Staunton itself, after living under a cloud of suspicion for years.

On a spring day four years ago, a gunman burst into a restaurant in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood. He opened fire, killing two young men in the eatery, and a pair of brothers attempting to flee the scene.

Many questions remain about the murders that occurred on March 30, 2017 in Nadia's Fish & Chicken Grill. The sudden massacre happened in the midst of a spate of killings in the South Shore. Police quickly identified a local suspect: 19-year-old Maurice Harris. Presumed Innocent was made into a successful movie starring Harrison Ford and- just last year- was also adapted into a television series on Apple Plus. That story focused on Rusty Sabich- who was facing a murder trial for the death of his lover. 

Turow returns to Rusty's story in his latest novel, Presumed Guilty- and you don't need to have read any earlier novel in order to appreciate it. Now a much older Rusty has settled down in a rural part of his state. He seems to have found true love. But there's a pretty big complication- the African American son of Rusty's partner is charged with murdering his girlfriend-- and he wants Rusty to defend him in court. 

A Scott was kind enough to take the time to talk with us about the new novel. the stresses of trial work and how a prosecutor knows when he's ready to move into criminal defense.

In 1991, a young college student named Anita Byington was brutally murdered in Austin, Texas. A man named Allen Andre Causey was tried and convicted of the murder, based largely on his confession to police. Causey was paroled recently. But the Innocence Project of Texas took on the case, believing that he was factually innocent of the crime and that he deserved to be exonerated. The Travis County Prosecutor's Office agreed with their assessment, and legal proceedings have been going on this year around Causey's exoneration.

But Anita's cousin Kristina Byington is pushing back. She feels that Causey is guilty of the crime, and she has criticized the Travis County Prosecutor's Office for leaving her in the dark and working too closely with Causey's team. Today, we will speak to Kristina. Tomorrow, we will hear from the other side when we interview the Innocence Project of Texas, a group of attorneys who strongly feel Causey is innocent and that another man killed Anita all those years ago.

For years, Tony Strombeck served as the town marshal of the tranquil, lakeside community of North Webster, Indiana. Over the years, one case came to haunt him. That was the 1975 abduction, rape, and murder of 17-year-old Laurel Jean Mitchell.

Researching and thinking about the Delphi case requires us all to think about dark subjects most people are not be familiar with– topics such as internet predators and child sexual abuse materials. We feel that it would help us all understand better what happened in Delphi back in 2017 if we were able to get more context in those areas. We are beginning this endeavor by talking with David Finkelhor. 

Dr. Finkelhor has been researching issues involving child victimization, child maltreatment and family violence since 1977– which is even before there was an internet. He is the Director of Crimes against Children Research Center, Co-Director of the Family Research Laboratory, Professor of Sociology, and University Professor, at the University of New Hampshire.
