And then you have Wyatt Earp...a film that, on paper, had all the makings of a masterpiece. Suffering the critical success of Tombstone, which was released just months pryer, the film was slammed by critics and flopped financially. That being said, it seemed fitting to seize the opportunity to compare two films that tell the same exact story from different perspectives. Get your mustaches on and draw...it's Movie Wars.

29 Apr 2021Jaws Vs. Jurassic Park (Ep. 0004)01:24:03

Episode Summary: Film is often a canvas that can be used for so many things. They reflect the politics of the time. They often reflect the issues that people faced. Artists embody those by reflecting them onto the big screen But you also have movies like Jaws and Jurrasic Park. Two movies that can only be described as downright adventures. In the heaviness of any time period, leisure can be had in the form of pure entertainment. At a base level, film exists to transport us. It transports us to a time that we didn’t experience or tickles our imagination to wrap our minds around something we can’t comprehend on our own. Nothing accomplishes this like these two films. During randos, the guys talk about what it took to make these films, the struggles of the mechanical shark, the CGI of JP, Steven Spielberg’s desire to walk on making Jaws, and the improvised acting moments that often get buried by the action of Jaws.

Goyer's(Batman Begins writer) follow-up hit 1994's watermark? Or does it serve as a cash grab, obliterating the legacy of Brandon Lee? With a new set of villains, a tunic-wearing gang leader, and a grown-up Sara, how does Vincent Perez's Crow fare in this orange haze-filled setting? With another rocking soundtrack and the much-delayed casting of Iggy Pop, City Of Angels does what it can to extend the cult love of The Crow.

27 May 2021Tommy Boy Vs. Dumb And Dumber (Ep. 0006)00:57:23

Episode Summary: After the brain-searing, philosophically exhausting episode 0005(The Matrix Vs. Inception), the guys needed a week or two to catch their breath. For a change of pace, they give comedy a whirl. What better than quite possibly the best two buddy comedies of all time? Buddy comedy is its own subgenre of comedy. It appears throughout comedy in every decade. Dumb And Dumber and Tommy Boy are side-splitting films that take the audience on road trips through less than ideal situations. One of the major themes of episode 0006 is the idea that comedy in and of itself should be judged similarly to dramatic films(Jeff Daniels even said so). This rests in the fact that so many comedic actors can do drama but the reverse isn’t nearly as prevalent. Jim Carrey is an incredible example of this range. Knowing this is true, you can’t help but think about what several of entertainment’s biggest hitters had to say about the late and great Chris Farley. The common sentiment is that we hadn’t even seen the tip of the iceberg of his talent. Like many great comics, his potential to do drama was not only high, but expected. Kyle speaks to failure as a stand-up comedian to provide insights into the emotional layers of comedy. During randos, the guys discuss how Dumb And Dumber was a film that was more than likely never going to be made, how Jeff Daniels ended up playing opposite of Jim Carrey, and the original casting choices that would blow your mind.

18 Feb 2025Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga01:25:03

Kyle has his friend, standup comedian, and film critic Matthew Blevins join for the final entry of the Movie Wars Mad Max series. We close out with the controversial final chapter, Furiosa. We delve into the stark contrasts between this latest installment and its predecessors, particularly focusing on the diminished depth of character and narrative coherence that plagued "Furiosa." Our discourse scrutinizes the portrayal of the titular character, Furiosa, as well as the lack of engaging villains, which ultimately detracts from the film's potential impact. Furthermore, we explore the overall cinematic techniques employed, lamenting the absence of the gritty realism and imaginative vehicle design that characterized earlier films in the series. This examination culminates in a broader reflection on the evolution of the franchise, as we ponder the implications of its current trajectory within the realm of action cinema.

It was only a matter of time before the Movie Wars crew released an Arnold Vs. Arnold episode. Drew and Phil treated Kyle to cigars and Thai food for his birthday while we watched "Arnold" on Netflix. Needless to say, it was inspiring for us. We ditched "Mr. And Mrs. Smith" (which is a good match plotwise) for the ultimate Arnold fan matchup. By many standards and opinions, "True Lies" is considered to be Arnold's finest work, while "Eraser" marks the end of what film scholars believe to be Arnold's golden era which started with "Conan the Barbarian" in 1982. Often maligned, the MWP crew found a lot of joy in "Eraser" and the throughlines were too hard to ignore. Get erased and lie to your spouse about your career. Check out "True Lies" Vs. "Eraser."

31 Oct 2024The Crow (2024)01:18:31

The final installment of The Crow series holds its breath and dives into the 2024 reboot that inspired the series in the first place. When the first 2024 trailer was dropped, it marked the only time Kyle marched into his studio and recorded a "reaction" podcast(something Kyle prides himself on never doing). It was there that the MWP Crow series was born. The hosts express their disappointment with the film's failure to capture the essence of the original, highlighting how it lacks the compelling character development and emotional weight that made the 1994 version a classic. As they dissect the film's plot, pacing, and character motivations, they point out that the reboot feels more like a generic action movie, drawing unwarranted comparisons to the beloved original. The conversation reveals a split among the hosts regarding the film's merit, with some leaning towards a more forgiving view while others maintain a critical stance. With engaging banter and insightful commentary, the episode underscores the challenges of rebooting a cherished franchise and the impact of expectations on audience reception.

The discussion centers around The Crow franchise, particularly the latest reboot, which has prompted mixed emotions among the hosts. Kyle expresses his relief at finally wrapping up the Crow series, while Seth shares the challenges of the endeavor, emphasizing that the reboot was essentially an excuse for him to revisit one of his favorite films from 1994. As the conversation unfolds, Kyle critiques the reboot for its lack of originality, insisting that it shouldn't have clung to the original characters' names, Eric Draven and Shelly. The hosts compare the reboot to previous installments, noting how the reboot fails to capture the essence of the original while trying to appeal to a younger audience. Drew suggests that the film could have benefited from a different title altogether, emphasizing that the reboot's reliance on familiar names detracted from its potential to stand alone as a unique story.

As the conversation progresses, the hosts dissect the pacing of the film, lamenting how it takes a significant amount of time before any Crow action occurs. They draw parallels to the original movie, which established the action early on, allowing viewers to invest in the characters and their motivations more deeply. The reboot's slow buildup and emphasis on backstory lead to a lack of emotional investment in the characters, particularly in the romantic relationship between the leads. Despite some positive elements, such as the cinematography and soundtrack, the overall consensus remains that the reboot doesn't live up to the original film's legacy. The conversation concludes with the hosts ranking the films in the franchise, ultimately placing the 1994 Crow at the top, with the reboot falling lower on the list.

The episode effectively captures the hosts' nostalgic reflections on the original Crow film while critiquing the latest reboot for its shortcomings. Their discussion delves into themes of originality, character development, and the challenges of reimagining a beloved franchise. The hosts' camaraderie and humor shine through as they navigate their differing opinions, leading to a thoughtful exploration of what makes a film truly resonate with audiences. Each host brings their unique perspective to the conversation, resulting in an engaging dialogue about the Crow franchise's past, present, and future.

Takeaways:

  • The podcast discusses the Crow franchise, wrapping up its commentary on the reboot.
  • Listeners are led through a comparison of the Crow reboot to its predecessors.
  • The hosts share personal experiences and views on the evolution of the Crow series.
  • Critiques focus on the choice of names and character development in the reboot.

The video game movie genre is experiencing a renaissance. Traditionally, cinema has heavily influenced the production of video games. Games like Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid are evidence of this. As video games have become more cinematic on their own, the sentiment around video game-influenced movies has increased. Shows like The Last Of Us and the upcoming Super Mario Brothers movie are garnering more interest from the masses than any game-inspired IP before them. Today, the guys are covering two female-led video game films: Resident Evil and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Kyle, Drew, and Phile had a mighty fine time drawing from their love of video games for this matchup.

08 Jul 2021Heat Vs. The Departed (Ep. 0009)01:08:07

Episode Summary:  Cops and robbers are a sacrament of film. Once crime was introduced to cinema, filmmakers and writers uncovered its narrative power. Like any popular subject matter, it tends to get bland as films present watered-down versions and half-assed attempts at telling a compelling crime story. Fast forward to 1995’s HeatHeat is art meets action in the form of cops and robbers. Instead of your standard crime drama, Michael Mann serves up a delicious character study that focuses on the subtle variance in moral fibers that put good and bad on opposite sides. The movie breaks wide open when you realize that Vincent and McCauley are the same people. They just happen to fall on different sides of the law. The Departed seems like a Scorsese rerun on the outside. However, it doesn’t take long to see that it’s not his age-old formula of “3 hours of zooming in on the thing that makes a character unbearable.” Instead, he puts together a giant cast and shows his ability to tell a story across multiple points of view. In this episode, the guys discuss how simply having a giant, star-laden cast doesn’t guarantee a good film. It takes a director and a vision. These two films are the ultimate example of how to balance star power and story. As for randos, the guys discuss the preparation that actors went through, Michael Mann’s attention to character detail, and the artistic design of these powerhouse films.

20 Mar 2023The Batman Vs. Batman Begins (Ep. 0040)01:19:50

Batman films serve as a time-stamped looking glass into the temperament of society. The stark difference in tone is evident when you watch 2005's Batman Begins after watching Tim Burton's Batman (1989). The inherent silliness that endears 1989's Batman seems like a spectacle when compared to Nolan's entries which embody the post-9/11 nihilism that we've discussed on the podcast many times. Yet somehow, 2022's The Batman takes the cake when it comes to channeling darkness. When you pair the truly noir detective roots of Batman with Matt Reeve's pandemic-born, post-election-inspired grunge opus, you get The Batman. Join Kyle, Drew, and Phil in the Movie Wars cave as we pit two celebrated Batmen against one another.

23 Jul 2021The Godfather Vs. Goodfellas (Ep. 0010)01:37:48

Episode Summary:  You cannot assess the history of cinema without assessing the history of mob films. Filmmakers discovering that crime offered a new narrative form changed the direction of movies to come. Today, the guys discuss two of the most celebrated mob movies in history. The Godfather is in the constant rotation of films that are considered “Best Of All Time”. Goodfellas builds on the modern formula that The Godfather builds by giving the “Behind The Music” of running an organized crime organization. Also, these films don’t lack star power. When we analyze the cast of each film, it reads like the yet-to-be-realized youth of The Godfather versus the tenured De Niro/Pesci cast that Scorsese had perfected chemistry with. Buckle up for our most detailed Movie Wars to date. And remember, "never rat on your friends and keep your mouth shut” as Jimmy Conway put it.

08 Apr 2021Alien Vs. Predator (Ep. 0002)01:17:39

Episode Summary: Alien and Predator are two films that get mentioned in the same breath frequently. There are video games and the eventual fan-craved AvP series. At surface level, it seems that the only thing linking these two films are the extraterrestrials. There is a deeper thought there. In the estimation of the Movie Wars crew, what really links this film is a proliferation in how aliens are portrayed in films. Alien sci-fi really focused on the mystery of aliens. Maybe they probe you. Maybe they want to take over the earth. Nobody knows. Alien set a new precedent that whatever is out there is terrifying and violent. Predator takes on that idea in a more commercial way later on. Ridley Scott’s alien is vulgar, disgusting, morbid, and violent. Its journey is filled with sexual metaphors. Randos for this episode include a big-time actor who wore the first(and very ugly) Predator suit, the inspiration for the Alien look, an actor that required an insurance policy to protect the other actors and directorial decisions that led to some of the most iconic scenes in film history.

06 Dec 2023Lethal Weapon 2 Vs. Bad Boys (Ep. 0045)01:09:57

The Movie Wars crew was exhilarated to tackle two buddy cop classics in 1989's Lethal Weapon 2 and 1995's Bad Boys. Similar to Westerns, the Buddy Cop genre has been transformed and retooled, all while paying homage to a timeless formula. The chemistry between the lead actors drives both of these films. LW2 reveals that Riggs and Murtaugh are more like family than when they were introduced in the franchise's first entry, where they were beleaguered and struggled to reconcile their opposing policing methods. Bad Boys hinges more on Mike and Marcus' friction and bickering, leading to the ultimate payoff when their highly effective partnership is put on full display. Both films are anchored by comedic third wheels played by a pair of legendary Joes(Pesci and Pantoliano). How will the war score fair for these two genre titans? Give it a listen because you're never too old for this Movie Wars sh*t.

24 Jun 2021No Country For Old Men Vs. There Will Be Blood (Ep. 0008)01:08:37

Episode Summary: On episode 0008 of the Movie Wars Podcast, Kyle, Drew, and Phil dissect two modern masterpieces. These films duked it out for best film (No Country edged TWBB out) in 2008. Both qualify as American classics of masterful storytelling. These movies were even filmed in the same place. One of Kyle’s Rando’s covers how one film’s pyrotechnics halted the production of another. Kyle’s Randos cover original casting, pre-production mishaps with one of the film’s stars, notes from the books, and many more items. The story-hook focuses on how films were exploring dark and nihilistic themes comfortably after the tragic events of 911. Artists in all mediums weren’t shying away from dark themes. This created the opening for these two films. Not to mention that these two films were released the same year that Breaking Bad began its unprecedented run as, according to several, the best show ever made. Walter White took the concept of the antihero to new heights as do No Country For Old Men And There Will Be Blood. Anton Chigurh and Daniel Plainview are two of the darkest, complex, and interesting antiheroes to ever hit the big screen. The guys finish it out with their epic scorecard and personal picks to conclude the show.

08 May 2024Movie Wars Short: Revisiting Stanley Kubrick Vs. Stephen King00:24:25

Speaking of wars, Kyle revisits one of his all-time favorite Hollywood stories. If you weren't aware, the release of Stanley Kurbrick's The Shining started a kerfuffle with the novel's beloved author, Stephen King. The Shining was King's most autobiographical work that brought him into the limelight. He saw Kubrick's interpretation as an insult to his prized work. Kyle analyzes and retells the story and concludes with who he believes came out the other side victorious, albeit, decades later.

05 Mar 2024The Shawshank Redemption Vs. The Green Mile (Ep. 0047)01:26:21

Welcome to one of the most low-hanging fruit, on-the-nose matchups we've ever done. The same director. The same author of the source material. Both take place in prisons where plenty of free men are locked up for crimes they didn't commit. By many lists, The Shawshank Redemption is considered the greatest film of all time. Although The Green Mile doesn't share the same status, it carries plenty of cache on its own. Walk the Green Mile toward freedom with the Movie Wars crew!

08 Sep 2023The Boondock Saints Vs. Snatch (Ep. 0044)00:58:07

Watching "The Boondock Saints" was considered a dorm room initiation during Kyle, Drew, and Phil's college years. Highly requested by our listeners, "The Boondock Saints" possesses one of the most prolific cult followings in history. Its success was bolstered primarily by Blockbuster rentals. Although critics bashed the film, a lauded documentary titled "Overnight" received high marks for its portrayal of Troy Duffy; the highly volatile, rags-to-riches director who eventually found himself blacklisted for his uncouth approach to directing Harvey Weinstein's Diamond in the Rough. As for "Snatch," Guy Ritchie is the most requested director we've yet to cover. With his unique blend of violence, humor, and rapid-fire pacing, Guy Ritchie's style shines in "Snatch."

With God on our side, the MWP crew slays the wicked war card, bare knuckles and all.

The Mad Max franchise is known for its groundbreaking stunts and dystopian imaginings. It also introduced the world to future legend Mel Gibson. Originating from the Ozploitation movement of 1970s Australian cinema, Mad Max gained international attention despite a budget of only $400K. The Shakespearean villains are more memorable than the protagonist, who would rather fade into the oblivion of the Western-style conflicts he finds himself in. Cut from the framework of traditional Westerns, Mad Max offers a dystopian take on the classic "...a stranger walks into town" formula.

Although seen as two drastically different films, they make a great pairing for episode 0007 of the Movie Wars Podcast. Kyle, Drew, and Phil discuss the themes that tie these two films together. Although Rocky and Jake LaMotta are very different, Kyle surmises that they make up two sides of one coin. One is a naive optimist while the other is a gifted but insanely troubled person. This paradox is what makes sports films great. The sport itself is often just the proving ground that acts as a metaphor that plays out the complexities of the characters themselves. Boxing itself is arguably the most superior sport to tell those stories.

14 May 2021The Matrix Vs. Inception (Ep. 0005)01:20:35

Episode Summary: Kyle, Drew, and Phil were asking for a brain bruising when they decided to do this matchup. The Matrix carries its equal weight in philosophy as it does innovative action and camerawork. The only film that comes close in recent years is Inception. Both require multiple watches to understand. Typically, the first viewing amazes with their visuals. However, you are left scratching your head at the meaning of it all. The guys do their most research to date in order to do these titans justice. The story hook is summarized by two protagonists traversing alternate realities in pursuit of their own version of personal freedom. Truth is uncomfortable and unsettling. Dom(Inception) and Neo(The Matrix) push every boundary to accomplish those freedoms at a high cost. During randos, the guys discuss the high-powered actors who turned down the roles of Neo and Morpheus, the educational preparation that was required to make these films, the physical tole that was taken out on one star(and his stuntman), and the philosophies that drive these films.

28 Oct 2022Halloween Vs. A Nightmare On Elm Street (Ep. 0034)00:56:33

The Slasher film is easily one of the most popular subgenres in all of cinema. The genre’s roots begin with Hitchcock's desire to modernize the horror genre by taking it out of European castles and removing werewolves and vampires. 1960's Psycho and Peeping Tom are true predecessors to 1978's Halloween. That being said, Halloween is seen as the first film to solidify what would become the slasher formula. Just six years later, A Nightmare On Elm Street shows the evolution of the genre featuring a comedic and vocal antagonist which departed from the silent stalkers embodied by Michael Myers and Jason Vorhees. It doesn't matter how fast you run, Episode 0034 of Movie Wars will find you.

Film Summaries

A Nightmare On Elm Street

In Wes Craven's classic slasher film, several Midwestern teenagers fall prey to Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), a disfigured midnight mangler who preys on the teenagers in their dreams -- which, in turn, kills them in reality. After investigating the phenomenon, Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) begins to suspect that a dark secret kept by her and her friends' parents may be the key to unraveling the mystery, but can Nancy and her boyfriend Glen (Johnny Depp) solve the puzzle before it's too late?

02 Mar 2023Ocean's Eleven Vs. The Italian Job (Ep. 0039)01:00:27

Cue the house music beats and the getaway cars. Kyle, Drew, and Phil find themselves in the middle of the ultimate heist film battle. Both Ocean's Eleven and The Italian Job are remakes that attempt to sever ties with their source material. Ocean's Eleven boasts a veteran ensemble cast, including Julia Roberts, who is fresh off of her 2001 Oscar win for Best Actress for Erin Brockovich, which is also directed by Steven Soderbergh. The Italian Job's is more of an ensemble in the making, showing off a rookie class effort for burgeoning greats Charlize Theron and Mark Wahlberg. It's hard to argue that The Italian Job borrows mightily from Oceian's Eleven, which was released two years earlier. Strap yourself into your Mini Cooper and grab your finest suit as Movie Wars attempts to determine which heist film steals all the marbles.

17 Oct 2024The Crow: Salvation01:22:15

Have you been saved? Kyle, Seth, and Drew delve into the third installment of "The Crow" series, "The Crow: Salvation," highlighting its surprisingly positive reception compared to its predecessor, "City of Angels." The hosts discuss how the film successfully redeemed itself even with its straight-to-DVD status, with interesting character arcs and some standout performances, particularly from then-unknown Walton Goggins and Tim Decay. They explore the film's unique approach to the crow's resurrection powers, noting the creative twist with the character's mask and the overall aesthetic choices that set it apart from the earlier entries. Despite some criticisms regarding the lack of depth in the villains and the film's pacing, the hosts appreciate the entertaining moments and the thematic elements of revenge and justice. Ultimately, they conclude that "The Crow: Salvation" offers a refreshing take within the franchise, even if it doesn't reach the heights of the original film.

A captivating dissection of 'The Crow: Salvation' unfolds as the hosts of the Movie Wars podcast — Kyle, Seph, and Drew — embark on an exploration of this sequel's narrative and thematic depths. The conversation kicks off with a focus on the film's central character, Alex Corvus, as portrayed by Eric Mabius. The hosts examine his journey from wrongful execution to seeking vengeance, discussing the moral implications of resurrection and revenge. They highlight the performances of young Kirsten Dunst and Walton Goggins, noting how their talent brings a level of gravitas to the film that elevates it despite its flaws. The hosts admire Goggins’ portrayal of a corrupt cop, offering a nuanced perspective on the character's motivations and the film's critique of systemic corruption.

As the dialogue progresses, the hosts delve into the film's visual presentation, contrasting it with the original Crow and its sequel. They critique the cinematography, particularly the color grading and overall aesthetic, which they feel detracts from the film's potential. The discussion brings to light how the film's lower budget may have limited its creative execution, leading to a less engaging visual experience. They also reflect on the film’s pacing and structure, acknowledging the struggle to maintain tension and interest in the latter half of the film. This analysis is punctuated with humor and shared anecdotes, making for an entertaining and enlightening listening experience.

Toward the conclusion of the episode, the hosts ponder the legacy of 'The Crow: Salvation' within the franchise. They express a shared hope for a future reboot, one that could potentially reconcile the narrative and aesthetic inconsistencies of the sequels while honoring the original's legacy. This episode stands as a testament to the hosts' ability to blend critical analysis with humor, providing listeners with a rich understanding of the film and its place in cinematic history. 10 Nov 2022Face/Off Vs. Con Air ( Ep. 0035)01:03:00

Let's just call this the ultimate "Cage" match. Nicholas Cage had an incredible run of films starting in the early 90's and tapering off in the early 2000's. His popularity landed him roles that were tailored to his eccentric persona. If you've listened to Movie Wars before, we love talking about the evolution of action from how it was sprinkled into Westerns and Bond films, to the macho muscle era, and to the Average Joe Bruce Willis era. Face/Off and Con Air represent the era of absurdity that could only occur in the 90's. Swap faces with the Movie Wars crew for the ultimate "Cage" match.

14 Apr 2021Terminator 2: Judgement Day Vs. Aliens (Ep. 0003)01:16:33

Episode Summary: How does a director develop a sequel to a masterpiece? Ask James Cameron. Cameron originally directed The Terminator in 1984 and created the sequel T2. He also took on the daunting tasks of developing the sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece Alien. Hindsight is 20/20 now that we’ve seen Cameron make relevant and innovative films every decade since he came on the scene. At the time, Scott’s old crew from Alien wanted nothing to do with him. The visuals for T2 had never been done before. However, this didn’t stop him from making two sequels that(depending on who you ask) are better than their predecessors. James Cameron isn’t the only thing linking these two films. Both films are buoyed by strong female arcs that don’t yet exist in the sci-fi drama. When it comes to Randos, the guys discuss the budgets and innovation behind these two groundbreaking films, an actress who hated guns but shot a lot of them in the movie, alternate endings that would have changed the outlook for a certain franchise, and James Cameron’s not-so-friendly welcome by Ridley Scott’s original Alien Crew.
