24 Jul 2017 | MBR& - "Tailwind Nutrition" (July 24, 2017 #892) | 01:01:34
July 24, 2017 ABOUT THIS EPISODE:Ben sits down with Jeff for the second time on MBR and you don't want to miss it. They run through how Jeff got started riding, how he tasted his breakfast at the end of his first Leadville 100 and how that plays into how Tailwind was started. The story goes through a lot of growth, from using a Kitchenaid stand mixer to make one batch at a time to buying a tumbling mixer, but not having the money for a motor, how he made his own sifter using an orbital sander, and how as the business has grown to a 12 person team, they still keep a personal touch on every order. Ben chats with Christy and Brianna about what they’ve been going through and what they plan to do. If you have any ideas for future guests or episodes, please contact us atben@mountainbikeradio.com. CHRISTY & BRIANNA’S PURPOSEOur hope is to inspire, to raise funds, and to share our story. We want to inspire people, no matter what challenges they have faced or are facing, to get outside and find joy and beauty in the midst of hardship. My mom is the inspiration for this mission as she was recently diagnosed with b-cell lymphoma and is undergoing chemotherapy. We are hoping to raise funds for the King’s Fold Retreat Center (in the Canadian Rockies) which provides place of refuge for so many facing challenges in life. For the past 18 years, they have hosted a week-long retreat several times throughout the year specifically for cancer patients. We want to share our story and journey through cancer and the hope and joy that riding a bicycle can bring! CHRISTY & BRIANNA’S STORYWe are best friends who love life, have a passion to be outdoors and to explore this amazing world on two wheels, and who have both been impacted by cancer. Our friendship began in South Africa on an Athletes in Action service trip where we played soccer with the SA National team and put on soccer camps in poverty stricken townships. Since then we have supported each other through the highs and lows of life and have shared some of the most epic adventures together throughout the world. We are both passionate mountain bikers who have competed in mtb racing in North America. Last December, we moved to New Zealand to have the opportunity to adventure on two wheels and mtb race in NZ for a year. Unfortunately, our time had to come to a screeching halt a few months into NZ as Bri’s mom was diagnosed with cancer and Christian broke her back after falling 100ft off a mountain while biking. After nearly 100ft of tumbling head over heals, she came to a complete stop “only by the power of God’s hand and choosing for me to live.” She was heli-evaced out of one of the most remote places in the country, and learned that she had fractured her spine in two places, and compressed three vertebrae completely on top of each other. We will never forget that day and it has brought us closer in our friendship in a way that only a life and death experience can. Christian is now on the road to recovery and is planning on making a remarkable comeback to take on this challenge! After all this unfolded in NZ, Bri went home to Canada to support her mom through her journey with cancer and Christian returned to Colorado to focus on healing her back around the support of family and friends. Christian lost someone very close to her many years ago when her cousin she grew up with died of cancer at 19yo after battling cancer throughout his adolescence. This has impacted her life in a big way and is an inspiration for her to do this ride. Bri’s mom is in the fight of her life but we are holding hope that she is going to be a survivor! She is a resilient women and has a quiet strength about her that everyone seems to notice. Not once has she felt sorry for herself, and in fact continues to have a heart to serve her community and friends as she battles cancer. She loves being outside and in the mountains. Riding a bicycle has been a passion of her’s for many years and at the beginning of her chemotherapy treatment, she decided that her symbol of hope throughout treatment was going to be a bicycle; that she will soon be able to get back on the bike and ride to her heart’s content. And we are hopeful she will! THE PURPOSEThis September, we will be attempting to mountain bike through the Alps from Mont Blanc (Chamonix, France) to the Matterhorn (Zermatt, Switzerland) and finishing in the Aosta Valley (Italy). This will take us through some of the highest mountain passes in Europe and will undoubtedly be the most challenging bike ride we’ve ever done. We are taking on this ride in honour of my mom and her desire to ride her bicycle again. We are hoping that this challenge will inspire others to get outside and go for a ride, and raise a money for the Kings Fold Cancer Retreat Center. We are planning to make a short documentary of this journey and will also post to our FB along our purpose driven ride. We would be stoked if you would like to come alongside us as we venture through the Alps by checking out our page and hope you will share with others as we hope our venture encourages and inspires those impacted by cancer or any hardship in life. --------------------------------------------------------------- About Todd:
"Todd Wells was born December 25, 1975 in Kingston, N.Y. He fell in love with the bicycle at an early age starting with BMX from the age of five through sixteen. After graduating high school he picked up his first mountain bike and has been on a tear ever since. He found his way out to Durango, CO where he attended Fort Lewis College and began a pursuit of his career in cycling. Wells won two Cross Country Mountain Bike Collegiate titles for Fort Lewis College and the inaugural Semi Pro NORBA National Series title in 1996 before taking a break from his studies to become a full time professional cyclist with the Specialized Mountain Dew team.
His initial professional career was short lived as he decided to hang up his wheels at the end of the 1998 season and finish his collegiate studies at the University of Arizona. In 2000 he graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.S. in Management Information Systems and immediately started working for I.B.M., a company he interned with during his time as a student. Wells quickly realized that being a bike racer was better then having a “real” job and started training once again with his sights set on returning to the professional ranks. Some good results landed him a contract with the Mongoose Hyundai team and he was back on the circuit full time by the end of 2001.
By 2008 he was back where he started with the Specialized team and his results seem to get better with age. He has won fourteen National Championship titles across four disciplines. In 2011 he took on some endurance races and racked up wins in both the Leadville 100 and La Ruta de Los Conquistadors.
2012 might have been his best season yet with his third trip to the Olympic Games where he placed a career best 10th. He also managed to win his second PROXCT series title, second Pan American Championship title and stood on the podium at the Windham World Cup.
When Todd isn’t racing all over the world you can find him in one of three places; hanging out with his wife Meg, son Cooper and dog Winston, grinding it out on the golf course or hitting the dirt jump trails around Durango or Tucson, AZ."

When complete, the expansion's estimated cost will equal more than $250,000 and will provide riders of all abilities a more diverse selection of trail options. 14 Jun 2016 | Engineer Corner - "Elliptical Chainrings" (June 14, 2016 #717) | 01:05:04
June 14, 2016 ABOUT THIS EPISODE:This episode is brought to you by iSSi Pedals Phil and Ben discuss elliptical chainrings. Over the last few years, another generation of elliptical/ovalized chainrings has emerged. Many people are still turned off by the poor design of the Biopace chainrings of the 1980's-90's. The designs have been redesigned and refined with current technology to maximize the mechanical advantage in many situations. With more riders going to one front chainring set ups, we may see more riders switching over to elliptical chainring options. Listen in as Phil gives his engineering thoughts about elliptical chainrings and discussing power, torque, traction, mechanical advantage, and more. 13 Jul 2019 | Dirt Rag Dirt Fest PA 2019 - "Quick Intro" (July 13, 2019 | Host: Ben ) | 00:03:10
July 13, 2019 Dirt Rag Dirt Fest PA Show Page This is a real quick 3 minute intro to what is coming to the Mountain Bike Radio feed. You're going to start hearing a lot of content from Dirt Rag Dirt Fest from May in Pennsylvania which was a great time. Ben Welnak and Ben Hall (aka MTB Ben from New England Dirt) were fortunate to sit down with a wide variety of guests. Then after the Pennsylvania content, you'll get some from Dirt Rag Dirt Fest from July in West Virginia. Stay tuned! --------- ABOUT DIRT FEST Maurice and Elaine Tierney started Dirt Rag in 1989, creating a magazine that provided an inclusive forum where readers shared their stoke for the riding, culture, and lifestyle of mountain biking. After having a great time at the legendary Jim Thorpe Mountain Bike Weekend, the pair decided that Dirt Rag was in a position to translate the magazine’s in-print stoke to an in-person “gathering of the tribe.” The first edition of Dirt Fest took place in 1991 at Camp Soles, a YMCA youth camp east of Pittsburgh. The original event was decidedly chill. There was no vendor expo bristling with the bleeding edge of bicycle technology. Demo rides amounted to swapping bikes with a newfound friend. There was a lake, a bonfire, and a bicycle polo field. Nighttime entertainment consisted of an attendee strumming a guitar at the group bonfire—a far cry from The Earthtones jamming for a circus tent full of partying mountain bikers.
