24 Sep 2020 | E064: Planning: Executive Function and ADHD | 00:14:37
Are you a planner? Or are you more of a "maybe should have made a plan before I tore out that wall in my kitchen" kind of person? I can not explain what ADHD is without discussing Executive Function, because executive functioning is the CEO of our brain. You use it to run your life: your productivity, efficiency, family, work, friendship, including every single decision you make, from career choices to when to brush your teeth. One area of EF is Planning. Or the lack thereof, being the hallmark of ADHD. How does it affect an ADHD adult? Let's learn about our ADHD brains. 24 Jun 2021 | E098: Feeling Resentful Towards Your ADHD Brain? How to Accept Your ADHD and Work With It Instead of Against It: Q+A Session | 00:06:33
How can we start to accept who we are and how our brain works? You asked; I answered. Here's another question I get often from other folks with ADHD. Keep in mind, I've known about my ADHD for 20 years, so granted, I've got some experience to draw from. It's taken me a while, and yes, I still get frustrated with myself. I'm a human, not robot. My ADHD is part of me. It affects every part of my life, but it's not WHO I am. My ADHD is not all of me, not everything I am. You, too, can take steps towards accepting your differences and obstacles, and working towards being a little more okay with who you are. Here's some quick thoughts on this hefty question. 05 Oct 2023 | E210: I'm Sorry, I Forgot! Please Don't Be Mad At Me...It Was My ADHD | 00:22:20
Appointments, birthdays, permission slips, library books, names, the one thing you went into the store for… In today's episode, I delve into one of the most frustrating features of ADHD: forgetting important things. From my personal experiences of forgetting to pick up THE ONE THING that my husband had requested while I went backpacking through Spain to missing my child's swim lesson due to a mix-up in scheduling, we’ll explore the guilt and shame that often accompany these forgetful moments. But it's important to remember that having ADHD is not an excuse for forgetfulness, but rather an explanation. But how do you clearly make the distinction in your intention so everyone’s not mad at you for forgetting the thing for the 300th time??? In this episode, we explore the delicate balance between understanding the role of ADHD and taking personal accountability for our actions. Join me as we uncover strategies and insights to navigate through forgetfulness and rewrite our stories from shame spiral to success story. Get ready for a powerful (and uncomfortable) discussion on forgetfulness in motherhood and ADHD. They call it PMDD for short, and it's a very real and serious hormonal disorder that affects up to 10% of women! Symptoms include things mood swings (aka rage attacks), sadness, anxiety, hopelessness, depression, and even severe panic attacks. Many women with PMDD are either extremely tired or have bouts of insomnia. And then there's excessive crying and other emotional swings. Not to mention all the bloating, gastro issues, food cravings, and possible weight gain. Phew. I need a nap after writing that alone! Today my guest Heidi and I unpack what PMDD is, the symptoms of PMDD, how PMDD can be linked to post-partum issues, and how to talk to your doctor about getting a diagnosis. If you've been following along on in the last few months, we've talked a lot about menstrual health, hormones, and cycle syncing. We've uncovered numerous ways our menstrual cycle relates to ADHD symptoms in women. It's fascinating and disturbing at the same time. But there is hope, Successful Mama! Heidi Hogarth is a naturopath, a mom of two, and a PMDD survivor. 21 Jan 2021 | E076: Planning for the New Year with ADHD: One Month at a Time | 00:08:53
January is the start of the new year and it feels like everyone is tooting their Goal Setting and Yearly Planning horns. While intentions are good, planning is not my strong suit because I have ADHD. Throw in some time blindness, another feature of ADHD, and I have trouble planning today, let along the next 12 months. How can I plan for October when I don't know even what I am going to make for dinner tonight? Instead, let's break down planning into baby steps, and bring the future into the "now" by looking only at the upcoming month. While this won't magically fix our missing "time" skills, this will remind us what is coming up and help us feel prepared for what is ahead. Much appreciation to Lara Casey, from whom I adapted this technique. Download the notes from today's episode here: https://www.patriciasung.com/monthahead Do you want to be on the podcast? “I’ve tried everything!” When you’re dealing with a particularly frustrating problem that’s gone on for years, like parenting your exasperating child, looking for relief from a chronic health issue, or advocating for your child struggling at school, you start to run out of energy AND optimism. When you’ve got a situation that feels hopeless… When you’ve run out of ideas… When you’ve looked under every rock and barked up every tree… Should you just give up? Sigh. Except you REALLY want to find a solution. You’re not ready to give up on your kid, your health, the things that truly matter to you. What’s a mom to do? My kindergartener surprised me with his fresh take on counting last week, and it made me think twice about how I look at the same-old-same-old. In today’s episode, I’m sharing five valuable ways to find a fresh perspective when you feel overwhelmed or stuck. Let’s look outside the box and past the same advice you’ve heard 37 times to find what you actually need or could use. These are the kinds of problems that are worth another go. You’re worth it, too.

All right, today we're talking about the elephant in the room: MENSTRUAL CYCLES. I know, I know - not everyone's favorite subject! Adolescence, puberty, pregnancy, postpartum...there's no denying everything's in flux pretty much all the time. So, the question is what do we REALLY need to know and how can we navigate our ADHD symptoms while our bodies are on a constant hormonal roller coaster? I did a looooot of digging and I think you'll love the tools and resources I'm sharing. 08 Jul 2021 | E100: How do I overcome the ADHD energy roller coaster and be more productive? Q+A Session | 00:16:14
Mama, 100 episodes!?! High fives all around! I hear this one a lot: How can we have more energy for the whole day? How can we do more, be more, get more done? You asked; I answered. We get frustrated that we can't go at the same speed all day long. We're irritated that our day is an energy roller coaster. But why do we think we need to go-go-go from sun up to sun down? Perhaps the issue is not that we can't be uber productive 24/7, but instead that we expect ourselves to be as consistent as a robot. Energy regulation is a difficult part of ADHD. Maybe we need to lower the bar. Let's discuss. Ready to get your day organized? Join Daily Planning for ADHD Moms, where we learn how to keep a calendar and organize our to do lists in an ADHD and mom friendly way. Taucha Post of ADHD Yoga is sharing with us all about our brains and how mindfulness creates new pathways for us to learn how to slow down our brains, and present in the moment. We'll also dive into how mindfulness and ADHD are connected in the brain, and how the default mode network distracts us from our task at hand. Taucha and I also trudge through shame, perfectionism, and setting ourselves up for success instead of letting the failure mindset take over. Learning a few basic mindfulness techniques will give you a free ADHD treatment that you can practice throughout your day and with your children. It's easy to get started with mindfulness for ADHD with the mindfulness techniques Taucha will teach us. Incorporating mindfulness for an ADHD child is easier than we think. Taking care of yourself is a basic requirement of living - like food and water - not a luxury item. Self-care can and must be done in every stage of motherhood. Get ready - let's figure out what self-care truly fits you. You are worthy. You are valuable. You are not alone. Did you listen last week when Taucha shared her Adult ADHD journey? 06 May 2021 | E091: This ONE THING will create daily confidence, productivity, stop the chaos, and organize your life! | 00:17:35
Just one? Really. Big changes come from baby steps. This is baby step 1 of planning your day. But HOW did I figure out how to plan my day in a way that works WITH my ADHD brain instead of against it? Step 1 is learning how to write events in our calendar. Our chaotic brains need ONE system. ONE plan. When we harness the power of the planner, it can change the course of your day. Your day starts off smoother and you are prepared for what is happening. But, we can't do planners the way everyone else does planners, as evidenced by the stack of partially used planners sitting on our shelves. We need a calendar system that works WITH our ADHD brains. When we first consider our time blindness, lack of task initiation skills, motivation to stick with the schedule, and the shame spiral of failed planners past, then - and only then - can we build a system that works for us instead of against us. If you're ready for some help on making a schedule for ADHD, I've figured out a way to make calendars work for ADHD brains and I want to share it with you. Friday is the last day to sign up for this round of How to Keep a Calendar for ADHD Brains, so head over to patriciasung.com/adhdcalendar now to jump in or sign up for the next round. Do you struggle with reading or math? Do you lose your place easily when working? Is reading sheet music ridiculously hard? Well, it might not be your eyes OR your ADHD, mama. It might be something called Irlen Syndrome. Not only does it tend to go along with ADHD (& autism!), it can lead to misdiagnosis. Irlen Syndrome, also called Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, is a perceptual processing disorder, not a vision problem. For those of us who have it, it can lead to some funky vision impairment and: - Extreme light sensitivity - Wanting/needing to read in dim light - Seeing waves or “rivers” in between the lines of text as we read - Poor depth perception - Bad coordination issues & clumsiness - Low self-esteem or motivation …and more.
However, even if you get this diagnosis, there’s good news: There are things that can help! Tune in to this week’s episode of Motherhood in ADHD to find out more about this condition and learn what you can do to counter these tough symptoms, including what symptoms to look for in children. 02 Dec 2021 | E121: Estrogen, Progesterone, and Your Menstrual Cycle: Do scientific research studies prove that our ADHD symptoms are affected by our hormone levels? with Dr. Michelle Martel | 00:32:26
What is scientific research REALLY doing for women with ADHD? It might *feel* like there is no research being done to help women with ADHD...but my guest today has insight into what's ACTUALLY going on behind the scientific research curtain. Dr. Michelle Martel, a professor and Director of Clinical Training of Psychology for the University of Kentucky, utilizes a translational, “bench to bedside” perspective to examine developmental pathways to Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), using multiple levels of analysis. Her bio is impressive and our conversation is SO GOOD. Her research uncovers what's really going on in the brains of people with ADHD and further - figures out what's going on internally with our hormones. Dr. Martel brings tons of knowledge around how our hormonal fluctuations affect our ADHD symptoms AND what that means for our mental and emotional health. I'm thankful for people like Dr. Martel who have dedicated time and energy to helping the ADHD community. Her research is not only fascinating, it gives YOU, Successful Mama, options to improve your life by understanding your body.

Honestly, she kinda lost me in the beginning of the book, and then it came full circle and I figured out why all that discussion at the front end was life-changing. As a shame researcher, Brene gives practical advice on how identify, and subsequently counter, shame. 21 Nov 2019 | E039: What's Your Motivation? | 00:15:24
Why? Why do you have that goal? Why are you trying to make a change? ADHD often gets us stuck. We aren’t sure how to proceed. It’s overwhelming and overstimulating. Or we forget about our new goal and make the same impulsive/bad/unhelpful choice as last time, tossing our new goal into the black hole along with all the forgotten goals and changes we never made. Figuring out WHY we are trying to achieve a goal makes us far more likely to stick with it. But not a surface why. Let’s dig down deep to the real why. 19 Aug 2021 | E104: The ONE Thing that Makes Your Daily Planning a Success when You Have ADHD | 00:13:24
We can be successful with ADHD when we start living purposefully like we have ADHD. The obstacles pop up like weeds when we try to live life like we don’t have ADHD. I pretended like I could be "ADHD-free" for many years. And I failed over and over. I finally realized that THIS is what I needed in order to successfully plan my day with ADHD. When we think about what systems we should have in place, we need to consider what works for an ADHD brain. If we don't consider how our brains process differently, we will always be trying to jam a round peg into a square hole. Creating a plan that actually WORKS for the ADHD brain means sometimes we have to chisel out a square hole on our own! "Neurotypical planning" is difficult for many of us - because it wasn't meant for us! The system I've created with the ADHD brain in mind makes planning actually achievable. Now, I'm not saying it's easy...and I'm not saying it doesn't take some guided effort. What I am saying is there is a way, a system, that I can show you that will help! Join me, and more ADHD mamas, in my **Daily Planning for ADHD Moms** course and weekly accountability group. Let's get your calendar and to-do list organized and create a plan for your day. 25 Mar 2021 | E085: Improving Our ADHD Diet & Food Choices for ADHD Moms with Anna Rubano | 00:25:23
Our guest this week is Anna Rubano, of In Tune with Anna K. We're talking about self care for moms who have ADHD and we're talking about food choices. This is a sore spot for a lot of us moms. How do we plan for healthy eating when we're barely surviving on handfuls of goldfish crackers and sandwich scraps leftover from our toddler? Take a deep breath and relax. This isn't a chat on the benefits of paleo vs. keto, or how to count your macros. Anna will encourage you no matter what your food choices currently are. Our discussion isn't about what you look like, or achieving that goal weight, or the perfect meal plan. Instead, we talk about: -how can we take care of ourselves through making small changes in our food choices -using food as fuel to nourish our bodies and feed our ADHD brains -how Anna stays committed when she does not have motivation -what you can do to get started when you are feeling overwhelmed -ideas on how to stick to your meal plan when you don't really feel like eating that thing any more Anna is a holistic health coach, helping women integrate whole health into their lives, looking beyond just healthy food choices to what is happening off the plate and in your life. She's not pushing diet culture. Instead she guides women on how to work on our physical health with big picture view - not nitpicking the details - which is a great match for our ADHD brains. Taking care of yourself is a basic requirement of living - like food and water - not a luxury item. Self-care can and must be done in every stage of motherhood. Get ready - let's figure out what self-care truly fits you. You are worthy. You are valuable. You are not alone. Anna's journey is part of our March Mama Madness Series. Be sure to listen to part 1, when Anna shares her ADHD diagnosis story of being diagnosed later in life after her son was diagnosed with ADHD. We covered aaaaaaall the feelings of shame starting in childhood, feeling like we're not good enough, and the grief & relief of having your diagnosis. Anna's soft spoken strength gives us hope that we can find our strength, too. Get ready to laugh and cringe as you hear parts of your life woven through Anna's story as she shares her ADHD journey with us, and witness her honesty and vulnerability through her struggles with ADHD. 01 Dec 2022 | E172: Whats the difference between an IEP and 504 plan? A teacher's explanation | 00:14:24
What’s the difference between an IEP and a 504 plan? While many kids with ADHD do well in school, a much greater percentage struggle to excel. The system is complicated and confusing. The first step is understanding what your options are. In public schools in the US, there are both 504 plans and IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) to help students with disabilities struggle less. Today I’m inviting you into an ADHD coaching call with a mom who asked for help in understanding how to help her son who seems to be doing okay so far… but what about when he doesn’t? While we usually focus on you, the mom, in your coaching call, we often we will discuss your kids because they are who made you a mom! Because I have worked in both public and private middle schools before I became a mom, I want to share with you a simple explanation on the difference between an IEP and a 504 plan. Plus I’m including my two cents on when is a good time to seek out these accommodations for your child. 28 Jan 2021 | E077: 5 Reasons We Fail at our New Year's Resolutions (and what to do about it) | 00:10:45
By the end of January, more than 90% of people have forgotten about, given up on, or started cursing at our new years resolutions. That we made. That we chose. That we *wanted* to do. And yet, we didn't. We failed at our resolution. But it doesn't have to stay that way. Having ADHD does not mean we can't set goals, or push forward, or succeed. February is just as good of a month to make positive changes as January, or July, or September. Let's ditch the "New Year's" part of the resolution and talk about 5 common reasons WHY we often fail at achieving our goals, and what we can do to get back on the horse, and do the thing that you really want to do. Download the notes from today's episode here: https://www.patriciasung.com/resolutions Do you want to be on the podcast? Here are the questions I wished parents would ask me, covering preschool to high school.
