The crew - minus Scott, who was "engaged" elsewhere -  had a blast at Joe Bob's Drive In Jamboree in Memphis, and this messy recording proves it. Our friends Tom and John join in via Zoom, and then we wrap up with clips from the actual Malco Summer Drive In, with "appearances" by Jonah Ray, C. Robert Cargill and several fellow Monster Kids and Mutants.

The audio was problematic on this one, but we think it is still worth your time.

07 Dec 2022Monster Movie Happy Hour Ep. 94, Random Picks #1, "The Final Terror"01:43:18

In this first (and possibly LAST) Random Picks episode, the crew lose their tiny minds, as evidenced by the fact that they left the selection of the movie AND the cocktail to chance! The movie, drawn from Dave's WW1 helmet, was 1983's "The Final Terror", which was first recommended by screenwriter C. Robert Cargill and gifted to us by our dear friend Tom, turned out to be a lot of fun.

Did we mention this is a LONG episode?

When it came to drinks, the cocktail ingredients were randomly rolled for using various-sided dice and 2 of the three were not bad. In fact, #2 was considered above average. #3 is perhaps best avoided . . .

Random Cocktails

Drink 1:
1oz Brandy
1oz Cointreau
2oz Apple Cider
Pour contents into low ball glass filled 3/4 with ice. Stir.

 Drink 2:
1.5oz Rum
1oz Aperol
1oz Lime Juice
Bitters
Lime Slice
Pour rum, Aperol into highball glass, 3/4 filled with ice, add Lime Juice, stir. Add dash Bitters, garnish with Lime Slice.

 Drink 3:
1.5oz Whiskey
1oz Maraschino Liqueur
4oz Orange Juice
1oz Cream
Lime slice
Pour whiskey, Maraschino Liqueur & Orange Juice in low ball glass, stir, top with Cream. Garnish with Lime Slice. (This one could be shaken)

06 Jan 2023Monster Movie Happy Hour Ep. 96, "Shivers"01:33:24

Scott, Mary and Dave welcome in the New Year by re-watching Cronenberg's 1975 science fiction body horror film, "Shivers". Though disgusted by the truly awful use of child actors in a few scenes, the crew had a great time watching it, as always, and it gave them a chance to gush about the stunning (and gracious) Lynn Lowry.

Dave's cocktail was actually a hit. Who'd a thunk it?

The "Starliner Sour"

This is a variation on the Whiskey Sour with a Canadian and Cronenberg twist!

2 oz Canadian Whiskey
1 Egg White
1/2 oz Maple Syrup (The REAL STUFF . . .)
1 oz Lemon Juice
3 dashes Angostura Bitters
1/2 oz Cherry Liqueur

Dry shake Canadian Whiskey and egg white until frothy.

Add ice, Maple Syrup, Lemon Juice and 3 dashes of Angostura Bitters, shake 15 seconds.

Strain over ice in a Lowball glass. Let the foam head settle in place. Drizzle or splatter Cherry Liqueur like blood.

Enjoy . . .

03 Feb 2023Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 98, "Moontrap"01:26:18

The crew watch 1989's "Moontrap", a pleasant, if somewhat unremarkable, sci-fi movie starring Star Trek's Walter Koenig and genre favorite Bruce Campbell.
The joy of sitting down together and sipping Scott's delightful cocktail may have prevented a truly in-depth analysis (or even basic description) of the movie . . .

Lunar Cocktail

With ice, shake vigorously:

2 oz White Rum
2 oz Heavy Cream,
1 oz Dark Creme de Cacao
1 oz Triple Sec

31 May 2023Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 107, "Shock Waves"01:10:21

To celebrate Scott's birthday and mark the end (sniff, sniff) of Mary's time in the Minnesota Deep Dark Lounge, the crew watch TWO movies, back to back - and ALMOST record two episodes, back to back!

The first movie was this underrated gem from 1977, "Shock Waves". You will have to check out episode #108 for the second movie.

Scot mixed up two cocktails, as well - here is the first one:

“Shock Wave” cocktail

In a shaker with ice, combine and shake:
1.5 oz Coconut Rum
.5 oz Orange Liqueur
.5 oz Peach Schnapps
3 oz Orange Juice
.5 oz Lime Juice

Shake until well chilled, strain into Highball glass with ice.

14 Jun 2023Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 108, "The Giant Claw"01:32:06

The second part of the Scott Chesebrough Birthday/Mary Challman Leaving the Nest extravaganza continues with a look at 1957's "The Giant Claw".

SOMEBODY fell asleep before we could record the "Tail End" of the episode (no bird pun intended), so, several hectic moving days later, Mary had to join us from The Deep Dark Lounge East to wrap it up.

Also - Scott's second cocktail was a hit!

"The Giant Claw" Margarita

In a blender with 5-6 ice cubes, combine and blend until smooth:
15 oz. bag of frozen Strawberries
6 oz. Silver Tequila
3 oz. Triple Sec
3 oz. Lime Juice
3 tbsp. Honey

Pour into 2 Margarita glasses and garnish with a Lime wedge and 6 to 8 Blueberries.

While Mary continues to settle into her new chamber in the Deep Dark Lounge East, Scott and Dave muse at length about movies starring Pterodactyls - and their kind - as the main monsters.

Scott's appropriately named cocktail was delicious.

"Malicious Pterodactyl Punch"

In shaker with ice, combine:
1.5 oz. Banana Rum
1.5 oz. Blue Curacao
4 oz. Watermelon Juice
Strain into a Highball glass with ice.
Garnish with a Maraschino Cherry, a Kiwi slice and a splash of Spiced Rum.

12 Jul 2023Monster Movie Happy Hour Ep. 110, "Rabid, 1977"01:33:36

The crew watch 1977's "Rabid" by David Cronenberg, and despite HAL Jr's best attempts at sabotaging Mary's  computer and phone, they manage to record their thoughts and sip Dave's variation on the whiskey sour- yes, that's right. ANOTHER whiskey sour for ANOTHER Cronenberg.

The "Rabies Sour"

Ingredients:
1 Egg white
2.5 oz of Bourbon (Bulleit)
.75 oz of Lemon Juice
.75 oz of Maple Syrup
.5 oz of Cherry Liqueur (Cherry Heering)

In a shaker with ice combine all but the egg white and Cherry Liqueur. Shake 15 seconds, strain into spare glass, discard ice, pour chilled ingredients back into shaker. Add egg white and “dry” shake for another 15 seconds. Strain into a coupe glass.

Drizzle Cherry Liqueur over the froth.

26 Jul 2023Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 111, "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things"01:31:44

The crew watch director Bob Clark's 1972 "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things", a zombie film heavily inspired by Romero's "Night of the Living Dead".
Scott teases Dave and Mary with memories of his early 1970's wardrobe, provokes them with possibilities of photographic proof, and now they can't think of anything else . . .

Mary's cocktail was delicious!

"Orville’s Shake - Up"

In a shaker with ice, combine and shake until chilled:

 .75 oz. Banana Liqueur
1.5 oz. Spiced Rum
.5 oz. Cinnamon Sugar Syrup
.5 oz. Lemon Juice (less than Mary’s recommendation – shhhhh!)

Strain into a Coupe Glass and garnish with a Lemon peel.

Friend of the podcast, John "Fading Arcader", joins the crew to help them deal with Dario Argento's 1993 "Trauma". John is the one who introduced us to the movie and pointed out that it was shot in Minneapolis, so . . . in many ways, this whole episode is his fault . . .

Scott's delightfully blue cocktail was a hit.

“Minneapolis Trauma” cocktail

1 bottle Smirnoff Ice
1 can Strawberry sparkling water.
2 oz. Blue Curacao
Strawberry slice for Garnish

1.Fill Collins glass with ice.

2.Mix together ½ a bottle of Smirnoff Ice and ½ a can of Strawberry sparkling water in glass.

3.Float 1 ounce of Blue Curacao on ice. (Good luck!)

24 Aug 2023Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 113, "Kwaidan"01:56:00

The crew watch 1964's "Kwaidan", a thoroughly striking Japanese ghost anthology movie that is over 3 hours long - and if you guessed that this is a LONG episode, you would be right. Good for you!

Dave's strong cocktail may have contributed to some tumbles down a few rabbit holes, but hey, at this point, does it even matter? Between listener questions, musings on Post-WW2 Japan and the usual distractions, there is a LOT to take in. Enjoy!

"Kwaidan" cocktail - a modified Manhattan.

In a mixing glass with ice combine:
1.5 oz. Bourbon
1.5 oz. Sake
.5 oz. Sweet Vermouth
.25 oz. Cherry Liqueur
1 dash Angostura Bitters
2 dashes Orange Bitters

06 Sep 2023Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 114, "Jacob's Ladder"01:31:08

Whew! The crew watch Adrian Lyne's "Jacob Ladder", which is a heartbreaking journey though the experience of memory, trauma . . . and the great unknown. The only thing to lighten the mood was our usual fall down various rabbit holes, another early garage band memory and Dave's continuing mispronunciation of Lyne's last name.

Mary's cocktail was a keeper!

“Demon Tail” cocktail

2.5 oz Spiced Rum
1 oz Cointreau
3 oz Pineapple Juice
1 oz Orange Juice
1 oz Sweetened Cream of Coconut
.5 oz Lime Juice

 Shake with ice

25 Sep 2023Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep.115, "Night of the Living Dead" 199001:55:59

Our dear friend Alex Taylor, that wacky Englishman living in Texas, joins us for a spirited discussion of Tom Savini's 1990 remake of "Night of the Living Dead", and we talk FOREVER! Seriously!

Unlike the last episode, Dave only messes up someone's name ONE time, mistakenly referring to actor Duane Jones (Ben from the original 1968 "Night of the Living Dead") as Duane Johnson.  Blast . . .

Scott makes a beer cocktail - and its pretty damned tasty!

"Uncle Rege's Recipe" beer cocktail

In a mixing glass, combine and stir:
Beer
1 oz Vodka
1 oz Rum
1 oz Lime juice
1.5 oz Grenadine

Pour into a glass half-filled with ice.

11 Oct 2023Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 116, "Session 9"01:26:30

The crew spend time in the infamous Danvers State Mental Hospital, via 2001's psychological horror film, "Session 9", all while drinking Scott's most complicated and visually disgusting cocktail.

The "Danvers Cocktail"

Cocktail ingredients:
2 oz Rum
1 oz Triple Sec
2 oz Maraschino Liqueur
4 oz Fruit Punch
2 oz Cherry Juice
2 oz 7 Up/Sprite
1 tbsp Lime Juice

For glass rim and garnish:
3 tbsp Black Sanding Sugar
3 tbsp Simple Syrup
Lychee "Eyeball"

For Lychee "Eyeball":
1 can Lychee fruit
Seedless Raspberry Jam
Blueberry
Red Food coloring

To make Eyeball -
Open and drain Lychee syrup. Pat Lychee dry with paper towel.
Spoon small amount of Raspberry jam into cavity.
Insert single, large Blueberry into cavity, dimple side up (the Pupil)
"Paint" Food Coloring veins on Lychee for bloodshot effect.
Add to cocktail by piercing pupil with cocktail skewer, which also holds "eyeball" together.

Prepare glass:
Dip Highball glass into plate of Simple Syrup, then into plate of Black Sugar. Let sit and dry in sugar for 3 minutes.

Blend cocktail ingredients in mixing glass.

Pour cocktail into Highball glass half-full of Ice, let sit for 1 minute to allow Black Sugar to drip into glass.

Garnish with Lychee "Eyeball".

Enjoy!

1/2 oz Blackberry Liqueur (Chambord)
1 1/2 oz pineapple juice

We join our friends over at the Castle of Horror Podcast to chat about this year's "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" and a damned good time was had by all!

There were a few minor audio hitches  (7 talking heads, 7 separate microphones!), but it was an absolute pleasure hanging out with fellow Dracula fans.

Dave's cocktail was rather tasty . . .

"Captain Elliot's Cherry Bounce"

Combine the following in a mixing glass with ice, stir and pour into a cocktail glass:

2 parts pineapple-flavored Rum
3 part lime-flavored LaCroix sparkling water
1 part cherry syrup
Garnish with a maraschino cherry

13 Dec 2023Monster Movie Happy Hour Ep. 121, "Rodan"01:26:54

The crew goes Old School and watches the classic kaiju, 1956's 'Rodan". Scott can't hide his anger at the filmmaker's confusion and misrepresentation of the noble Pteranodon/ Pterodactyl and goes on a frothing diatribe.

The cocktail was inspired by Scott's faulty memory regarding Rodan's breath and his overall anger at the creature's "scientific" classification.

“Pteranodon Imposter” cocktail.

1 oz. Amaretto
2 oz “Fireball” whiskey liqueur
3 oz Egg Nog
Dusting of cinnamon, sugar & nutmeg

In cocktail shaker filled 3/4 with ice, pour egg nog, whiskey & Amaretto.
Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
Strain into Old Fashioned glass

24 Dec 2023Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 122, "Rasputin the Mad Monk"01:45:36

In this Christmas episode the gang is visited by Hammer Studio's 1966, "Rasputin the Mad Monk" and at least ONE of the trio is thoroughly enchanted by Christopher Lee's performance . . . can you guess who?

Murderous computer HAL Jr is once again making his presence known. If only it had been "presents", but we don't think HAL Jr celebrates the season. Ah, well.

For his holiday cocktail, Dave combines suitable "Russian" ingredients and it ends up tasting like cheap Port wine. Dave LIKES cheap Port wine.

Happy New Year!

"
Rasputin's Blood" cocktail

3 parts Madeira Wine   (Allegedly loved by Rasputin)
2 parts Vodka   (Obvious Russian connection, right?)
1 part Cherry Syrup   (Cherry Varenya, a tea sweetener made by many Russians)

Pour over ice in an Old Fashioned glass, stir until cold, express oil from an Orange peel over the drink and add the peel as a garnish.

10 Jan 2024Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 123, "Event Horizon"01:28:11

To kick off the New Year, Scott, Mary and Dave buckle themselves in, drink a glass of Tang and blast into the  outer space, where they experience the horrors of 1997's "Event Horizon".  Mary gushes over Sam Neill repeatedly, but you knew that was going to happen, didn't you?

Actually, no Tang was consumed during this recording, but plenty of Mary's cocktail was.

“Gouged Eye” cocktail

2 oz White Rum
1/2 oz Maraschino Liqueur
3/4 oz Lime juice
1/2 oz fresh-squeezed Grapefruit juice (Dave and Scott used Pineapple juice)

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
Shake until cold, and strain into a coupe glass.

The gang seek shelter in 1932's "The Old Dark House" and have a grand old time with the denizens and travelers found within, though Dave has to call from the future a few times. Scott's hot shot cocktail was a hit.

"Fire Bug" cocktail

1 oz. Brandy
1 oz Pear liqueur
1 Tsp. Golden Rum

For Dave's birthday, the crew watch the Spanish-Italian zombie movie from 1974, "The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue".  Everyone was locked in their respective chambers and there was NO cake, but Mary's cocktail was a hit!

28 Feb 2024Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 126, "Happy Hour Adventures"00:35:28

As the crew prepare to record a slew of new episodes, we offer up this selection of dramatized "adventures" from past seasons. Think of them as a nod to the radio shows of old - without the same talent! We won't be offended if you hit the fast forward button.

Cheers!

13 Mar 2024Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 127, "Shrooms"01:28:47

The gang fall under the hallucinogenic influence of 2007's horror film, "Shrooms". Scott teases us with the notion that he considered adding mushrooms to his cocktail recipe - but wisely chose not to.

The "Murderous Mushroom" cocktail

Ingredients:

2 oz spiced rum
1 oz Maraschino cherry liqueur
1 oz apple cider or juice
.5 oz honey
.5 oz lime juice
Lime wheel or wedge (for garnish)

 Instructions:

1. In a cocktail shaker, combine the spiced rum, cherry liqueur, apple cider, honey syrup, and lime juice.

2. Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to combine and chill the ingredients.

3. Strain the mixture into a coupe glass.

4. Place a lime wheel or wedge on the rim.

27 Mar 2024Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 128, "Hereditary"01:31:44

Whew.  The crew watched Ari Aster's "2018 Hereditary" shortly after its release, and were so shaken by it that they vowed never to watch it again.

So . . . here they go again! Gluttons for punishment - and devotees of well crafted movies - they girdled their loins, strode forth into the maelstrom and subjected themselves to its unique "charms". All for YOU, dear listener. All for you.

Mary's cocktail was needed.

The "Scorched Body" cocktail

1.5 oz. Laphroaig Scotch – or a similar “peaty” Scotch
1.5 oz. Cocchi Americano
1.5 oz. Aperol

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass filled with ice. STIR until frigid, and garnish with a Luxardo cherry (floating on the bottom, of course, not unlike a decapitated noggin).

10 Apr 2024Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 129, "In the Mouth of Madness"01:23:58

The crew lose their minds over John Carpenter's 1994, "In the Mouth of Madness", and get all "Lovecrafty" . . .  so be prepared for the usual diversions and rabbit holes.

Dave's cocktail, like the village of Hobb’s End, seems sweet (and somewhat bland) on the surface, but will get you in the end.

"Hobb’s End Punch"

2 oz dark rum (Cruzan blackstrap rum)
1 oz lemon juice
1 oz pineapple juice
1 oz grenadine
.5 oz simple syrup
SEVERAL dashes of Angostura bitters

(Note - if you add orange juice, this becomes "Dave's Rum Punch".)

Shake to combine, pour over ice.

Enjoy

01 May 2024Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 130, "The Black Cat"01:58:26

The crew get a little TOO excited by the excess shown in this 1934, pre-code thriller starring Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, some black cats and a few faintly glimpsed nipples.

And don't get Scott started on the skin flaying scene . . .

Speaking of Scott, his cocktail was just what the Doctor ordered.

The "Poelzig"cocktail

In a highball glass filled with ice, pour, and then gently stir the following ingredients:

 2 oz Vodka
2 oz Cherry Brandy or Cherry Schnapps
4 oz Cherry Cola
2 oz Cranberry Juice
1/2 tsp. Juice from Luxardo cherries, (or Maraschino as substitute) in addition to 2-3 cherries for garnish.

The crew are still processing their thoughts about the hard-to-classify film, 1990's "The Reflecting Skin". It's a good thing they are all of a bright and cheerful disposition . . .

The crew gasps in horror (and giggles) as Michael Caine's character loses his hand in 1981, "The Hand", from writer/director Oliver Stone. Sir Michael may have been simply been paying for his garage with this baby, but it WAS quite entertaining.

“The Severed Hand” cocktail

75 oz. Cherry Liqueur
.33 oz. fresh-squeezed lemon juice
.75 oz. fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice
.33 oz. simple syrup

The crew checks out Dan Curtis' 1970 movie, "House of Dark Shadows", the first of two big screen versions of his "Dark Shadows"  TV soap opera.
Mary learns all about the Dark Shadows series, and the conversation runs far and wide, helped along by Dave's thinly-veiled Rum and Coke cocktail.

"Barnabas' Black Blood" cocktail

2 oz. DARK Rum

1 oz. Cherry Liqueur

In ice-filled low ball glass/ rocks glass, top with Coke, garnish with orange twist.

Enjoy this thinly disguised Rum and Coke!

The crew get all warm and fuzzy watching Cushing and Lee together again, in 1973's "The Creeping Flesh", directed by the fantastic Freddie Francis. Better than cold and slimy, right???

Mary's Challman strength cocktail was another winner. Yum!

2/3 oz. Chartreuse
2/3 oz. Luxardo
2/3 oz. Freshly squeezed lime juice
1/4 oz. Ice cold water

Rats!

No, seriously. This blast from the past has rats - LOTS of 'em!

The crew watch 1971's "Willard", starring a VERY young Bruce Davison, a middle-aged Ernest Borgnine and a rather old Elsa Lanchester. Did we mention the rats? What more do we have to say? Watch it!

The cocktail was . . . interesting.

12 Dec 2024Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 142, "The Screaming Skull"01:48:29

One of our listeners suggested that the crew watch 1958's "The Screaming Skull", and we aim to please. This movie is much maligned - and perhaps rightfully so - but we managed to find a lot to talk about and not all of it was negative. What a curious surprise . . .

Also we loved the cheeky warning at the beginning, ""The Screaming Skull is a motion picture that reaches its climax in shocking horror. Its impact is so terrifying it May have an unforeseen effect: it May kill you. Therefore, its producers feel they must assure free burial service to anyone who dies of fright while seeing The Screaming Skull."

“Screaming Mai Tai” cocktail

2 oz Pineapple Rum
1 oz Blue Curaçao
1/2 oz Lime Juice
1/2 oz Cinnamon simple syrup

30 Oct 2019Monster Movie Happy Hour, episode 2, "Night of the Demon"00:48:00

Dave and Scott indulge in an afternoon of cocktail tasting and a viewing of the Jacques Tourneur 1957 British classic, "Night of the Demon" (American title - "Curse of the Demon"), while Mary has to be content with calling in from work.

They spend a LOT of time talking about the Demon . . . a LOT.

The cocktail this time around is "Demon Juice".

•          1/2 shot of amaretto

•          1 shot of pomegranate juice

•          1/2 shot of orange juice

13 Nov 2019Monster Movie Happy Hour, episode 3, "Jennifer's Body"00:55:40

The crew watch and discuss the 2009 dark comedy/horror movie, "Jennifer's Body", and Farm Mama Mary makes Scott and Dave feel old, once again.

The cocktail pairing for this episode is the "Corpse Reviver, #2".

(inspired by a recipe from thespruceeats.com)

Dash absinthe

1 ounce gin

1 ounce Lillet Blanc (we used sweet vermouth)

1 ounce lemon juice (fresh squeezed)

1 ounce orange liqueur

Garnish: orange peel

Rinse a chilled cocktail glass with absinthe and toss the excess (Dave drank it).

Pour the remaining ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

Shake well.

Strain into the rinsed glass.

Garnish with an orange peel.

19 Nov 2019Monster Movie Happy Hour episode 4, "Let's Scare Jessica to Death"00:49:18

As winter approaches, Mary, Scott and Dave settle in to the Deep Dark Lounge for the evening to watch and talk about the under-appreciated 1971 film, "Let's Scare Jessica to Death." They manage to break their cycle of giving every movie a three shot-glass rating, (Note - the crew wishes this had been given a higher rating, and they blame their computer HAL Junior for the error)) and at least ONE of them enjoys the cocktail pairing, which is appropriately named, the "Asylum".

For your sipping pleasure, here is the "Asylum Cocktail":

  1/2 oz grenadine
  1 ounce Pernod
  1 ounce gin

"old-fashioned" glass

Pour slowly, in this order -- grenadine, Pernod, gin -- into an Old-Fashioned glass. Add 2 or 3 ice cubes; serve with stirring rod. Best to let the ice melt a bit before stirring so you can watch the pretty pictures the Pernod makes as it clouds up.

09 Dec 2019Monster Movie Happy Hour, episode 5, "The Lair of the White Worm"01:13:01

The crew watches Ken Russel's 1988 camp masterpiece, "The Lair of the White Worm", and spend a LONG time talking about the movie, sexuality, Sasquatch and Baby Yoda. Hold onto your hats - like we said, this is a long one.  Make yourself a drink and wade through all the wisdom that Mary, Scott and Dave have to offer.

The cocktail pairing this time out is "The Drunken Worm".

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2oz. Coconut Rum
  • 1.5oz Blue Curaçao liqueur
  • 4oz Pineapple Juice
  • 4oz Orange Juice

Pour over ice OR blend w/ 1 cup ice until a slushy consistency. Garnish with pineapple (white or clear) or white common Gummi worms, if available.

Note - we ended up using the blender, with even more ice, and Mary nearly choked on a frozen, multi-colored Gummi worm. True story.

20 Dec 2019Monster Movie Happy Hour, episode 6, "Gargoyles"01:15:42

Mary, Scott and Dave enjoy the cocktail selection a bit more than usual, this time around, as they watch and chat about 1972's made-for-tv movie, "Gargoyles", starring Cornell Wilde, Jennifer Salt and Bernie Casey. Due to a technical glitch, a few minutes of mindless banter disappeared in the middle, and you may well be thankful for that!

Dave's skull-shaped Christmas fruitcake is a hit, of sorts, and Mary suggests a gathering of gargoyles be called a "Gaggle".  The jury is still out . . .

Happy Holidays!

The "Gargoyle" cocktail:

2 oz Absinthe,

1 oz Lemon,

1 oz Simple Syrup,

6 blueberries.

Muddle blueberries,

add ice, Absinthe and lemon. Shake well. Add simple syrup. Shake and serve.

22 Jan 2020Monster Movie Happy Hour, episode 8, "Crimson Peak"01:01:24

The crew relish the chance to watch and talk about Guillermo del Toro's 2015 "Crimson Peak". It is a hand's down favorite of all three, and they "wax eloquent"  . . . at least until Mary's "Old Fashioned" cocktails kick in. Oh, brother.

The main drink for the evening was, appropriately, "The Crimson Cocktail." (You will have to ask Mary about her "Old Fashioned" recipe - the boys are sworn to secrecy.)

* 4 ounces pomegranate juice

* 2 ounces vodka

* 2 ounces amaretto

* 1/2 ounce lemon juice fresh

* 6 drops bitters

* ice

GARNISHES (OPTIONAL)

* 1 Twist of lemon

* 1 Maraschino cherry

INSTRUCTIONS

* In a Shaker, combine the pomegranate juice, vodka, amaretto, lemon juice and bitters. Fill the glass with ice and secure the metal tumbler over the glass.

* Shake the cocktail and ice together about 5-6 times to agitate the ice and chill the cocktail quickly. Strain the cocktail into tall glasses.

* Garnish with a twist of lemon and maraschino cherry, if desired.

05 Feb 2020Monster Movie Happy Hour, episode 9, "The Wind"01:01:52

Under assault from blowing winds, Mary, Scott and Dave hunker down in the Deep Dark Lounge. A shot of bourbon and a glass of refreshing, non-alcoholic sarsaparilla fortify the crew's nerves as they watch and discuss Emma Tammi's 2018 supernatural western horror film, "The Wind".

To relieve their sense of isolation and growing despair, they chat about the recent BBC "Dracula" adaptation, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and an alternate universe filled to overflowing with Scott Chesebrough clones. Shudder . . .

The cocktail this time out was simply a shot glass of "Mixed Blood" bourbon, created by  Du Nord Craft Spirits, the crew's favorite local distiller in Minneapolis. You can contact them here -

19 Feb 2020Monster Movie Happy Hour, episode 10, "Horror Express"01:12:14

The crew climb aboard the creaking, oddball - yet strangely charming - "Horror Express", a 1972 sci-fi/horror film starring Peter Cushing and Mary's boyfriend, Christopher Lee.
Even though this may be her favorite trip of all time, Mary jumps off, and the boys are left to continue the increasingly dangerous journey through Siberia on their own.  Brrr . . .

"Trans-Siberian Express" cocktail

The following ingredients should be poured in a shaker.

1.5 oz  Gin

.75 oz  Lime juice

.5 oz Vermouth

.25 oz  Crème de Menthe

1 tsp. Crème de Cacao

1 tsp.   Orange bitters

 1 sprig Mint (as garnish)

01 Apr 2020Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 15, "Caltiki, the Immortal Monster"01:21:09

The crew encounter the ancient, slumbering horror that IS "Caltiki, the Immortal Monster", a 1959 Italian film that was (in part) an early effort by horror maestro Mario Bava. We also sample a "unique" cocktail . . .

Note - This is the last episode that was recorded before Scott spilled a toxic liquid on the floor of the Deep Dark Lounge, forcing everyone to seek indefinite shelter in separate chambers. As a result, the sound quality is better than what will inevitably follow for the foreseeable future. Cheers?

"The Caltiki" cocktail

 Ingredients:

  •     3/4 ounce peach liqueur
  •     1/2 ounce Irish cream (Preferably chilled)
  •     1/4 ounce blue curacao
  •     Splash grenadine

Directions:

Pour the peach liqueur into a shot glass.

Gently pour the Irish cream into the shot glass to create a floating layer on top. If necessary, drizzle the Irish cream over the bottom of a spoon or knife to help control the pour.

From several inches above the shot glass, pour in the blue curacao, followed by the grenadine syrup.

31 Mar 2020Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 14 - Monstrous Musings 200:29:50

In this Monstrous Musings episode, the crew chat with the folks from Pollen Path Entertainment, who, at the time of this post, are trying to finance their feature-length horror film, "Captive". Owing to the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 outbreak, this long-distance episode was recorded using Zoom technology and the audio quality is less than stellar. Nevertheless, we felt it was important that we share this honest, behind-the-scenes look at the work required to bring monsters to the screen.

We also chat about the excellent movie, "We Are Still Here", and Scott's childhood encounter with eyeless fish  . . .

Cheers!

29 Apr 2020Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 18, "Equinox"00:58:49

The crew hunker down in their isolated chambers but still manage to watch 1970's "Equinox", a low - budget movie that brought us special effects wizards Dennis Muren, Dave Allen and Jim Danforth. It also brought us Frank Bonner, the man who played Herb on "WKRP in Cincinnati." What's there not to love????

Mary and Scott foolishly allow Dave to create another cocktail - guess what? This one ALSO has a hint of anise flavor in it. Surprised?

The Equinox cocktail

  • 3 ounces Calvados (French apple brandy)
  • 1 1/2 ounces fresh lemon juice, from about 2 lemons
  • 1 1/2 ounces spiced syrup - see below.
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Garnish: 2 lemon twists

For the cocktail: fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add Calvados, lemon juice, spiced syrup, and bitters into shaker and shake until well chilled, about 15 seconds. Strain into two cocktail glasses, dividing evenly. Garnish each glass with a lemon twist.

For the spiced syrup: Measure the water and sugar into a pot and stir together. Add cloves, star anise, and cinnamon sticks. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the sugar dissolves completely. Reduce heat and let simmer 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and let cool. Pour into a sealable container and refrigerate for 24 hours. Finely strain and use immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

Note - Dave used ready made mulling spices instead of cloves, star anise and cinnamon sticks, as the ingredients were all there.

This recipe was taken from the Serious Eats website -
"Kevin Martin's Equinox has become a favorite at Boston's Eastern Standard—it offers an autumnal twist on the classic sour. With apple-based Calvados, a savory spiced syrup, and that lemony kick, it's sure to be a home standard, too."
