Caylen and Phillip are back together in Yakima for a few weeks of June. They're just coming off their Win at the Granite Creek Sniper Challenge hosted in Montana underneath the Rifleman's Team Challenge. They bested over 40 teams, which some of them have years of experience shooting together. Matt has spent 17+ years in the Marine Corps infantry with four deployments between combat tours and MEUs. And has been a part of the Sniper community for 12 years and has served as a Team Leader, Chief Scout Sniper, and Platoon Sergeant. He has also held the positions of Chief Instructor for Pre-Sniper Course, Primary Marksmanship Instructor & Primary Field skills Instructor at Scout Sniper Course West, and Chief Instructor at II Expeditionary Operations Training Group (EOTG) Urban Sniper Course & Aerial Sniper Course. He has also assisted in instructing the II EOTG's Reconnaissance & Surveillance Course & Close Quarters Tactics Course, and has also contracted as a marksmanship instructor for SOF level 1 Sniper Courses throughout his career. He is also pursuing a bachelor's degree in Computer Technology with a concentration in Web Development.  He is a certified Breacher and has graduated Scout Sniper Course, Urban Sniper Course, and Aerial Sniper Course.

In this episode we brought on special guests from the Army Sniper community, Christopher Roberts and Christopher Rance. Both Roberts and Rance have spent some time not only as Snipers but as instructors at the US Army Sniper School in Fort Benning, GA. At Modern Day Sniper, we want to ensure the term "Modern Day Sniper" doesn't just revolve around what "Caylen and Phil" are up to, but to ensure all of our audience understands that being a Modern Day Sniper is a mindset that we are always learning and always evolving to be as proficient as we can in how we employ our long range precision rifle system, regardless of application. Obviously, for military snipers, it's the development on how to be as proficient and lethal on the battlefield as we can be. Caylen and Phil are together down in Grand Junction CO shooting the NRL Hunter Grand Slam. They recently taught a class with Stone Glacier up at Heart Mountain to help the team there get ready for their hunting season. Wind, the great equalizer of the long range shooter. Many of us are humbled by it on a daily basis, regardless if we’re professionals or novices. We’re overdue for a technical topic so in this episode Caylen and Phil tackle this phenomenon and talk about their process for interpreting the wind and using that information to derive a correction. After a hiatus that lasted too long, Caylen and Phil are back at it with some big news; Phil is now an official member of the MDS team! The pair catch up on what they’ve been up to for the last month and a half which involved in-person classes, mentorship students, Phil’s budget Tikka build, Caylen’s American Rifle Company builds, an early fall bear hunt, and a local club match.

Caylen and Phillip dive into a contentious topic among the sniper community; the practicality of maintaining such a high emphasis on using the mil relation formula to establish ranges to targets at the basic sniper skill level. Caylen and Phil discuss the origin and history of range estimation with milliradians and how even modern reticle designs are still not accurate enough to produce ranges to targets that reliably fall within the danger space of the currently fired projectiles.

In this podcast episode, Phil and Ryan take a deep dive into their experience at the NRL Hunter in Utah competition that they recently participated in as a team. They go over the various stages they encountered, including some of the obstacles they had to overcome, the techniques they used to achieve success, and the lessons they learned along the way.

Not only did they share the good moments, but they also delved into the bad ones and discussed how they could have done better. The discussion also covered the importance of preparation, teamwork, and communication in the competition.

Furthermore, Ryan will be teaching Intro to Precision and Scoped Carbine at the same venue, so they took the opportunity to do some range reconnaissance and familiarize themselves with the surroundings. They talked about the significance of knowing the range and how it can help in better performance.

We had a great opportunity to get to know Ryan Cleckner in this episode. Caylen and Ryan explore Ryan’s path as a US Army Ranger sniper and how he progressed within that community. Ryan talks about how he got himself into the Army’s sniper program and how the lessons he learned as a young Ranger translate to his career today as a firearms attorney and his newly established online venture, Gun University.
