19 Oct 2022Dr. Gabor Maté on Emotional Wellbeing, with Sean Fargo00:36:24
Anxiety, depression, auto-immune disease, addiction and suicide have been on the rise in the United States since before the COVID-19 pandemic. So what’s going on? Typically, we glaze over this question and focus instead on labeling people with diagnoses, treating symptoms and fixing behaviors. In this interview with Sean Fargo, Dr. Gabor Maté suggests we start by mindfully caring for our emotional wellbeing. By compassionately exploring the wounded human soul and the trauma at the source of our deepest pain, we can learn to heal ourselves and those around us. Topics in this episode include the parallels between emotional health and immunity, and the role of healthy anger, , why Dr. Maté never advises anyone not to judge, and how those of us in helping professions can better practice self-care for sustainable compassion.        Dr. Gabor Maté is a best-selling author and sought-after speaker whose experience is rooted in 20 years of practice as a physician in family practice, palliative care, and addiction. This interview is a brief excerpt from a presentation he gave to the Mindfulness Exercises Mindfulness Teacher Training program. 17 Jan 2024Bringing Curiosity to Shame, A Meditation with Sean Fargo00:17:02
Shame is the uncomfortable feeling we face having done something we don’t feel good about. Unlike regret, the mindful acknowledgment of a mistake, shame has a quality of self-judgment to it. And whereas guilt is focused on the action, shame is directed to our self as a whole. This can make it challenging to address and compassionately let go of our shame.   In this mindfulness meditation guided by Sean Fargo, we’re invited to face our shame directly. By bringing curiosity to shame and how it manifests in the body, we may find that it does not define us, nor does it have the power we once thought it did.   Listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Practice with eyes opened or closed, in a posture that balances comfort with alertness. May this meditation be of benefit to you in your mindfulness journey. Sean Fargo is a former Buddhist monk and founder of the online resource, Mindfulness Exercises. Mindfulness Exercises has shared mindfulness with over 6 million people via free and premium services including downloadable meditations, meditation scripts, mindfulness worksheets, courses, content and live online retreats. 16 Aug 2023We Are Capable of Meeting This Moment, A Meditation with Sean Fargo00:19:08
Each of us is far more capable than we generally give ourselves credit for. This is especially true when it comes to mindfulness meditation. We may feel as though our minds are too busy or full to be still. And yet, we’ve all had glimpses of what it feels like to be fully present in body and mind. Sustaining this presence takes practice, but it’s something we can do. In this guided meditation with Sean Fargo, we’re invited to place our attention on our natural capacity to meet this moment, just as it is, with presence and awareness. Through this practice, we strengthen this ability, allowing us to meet deeper layers of our experience with mindfulness. Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Find a posture that balances comfort with alertness, whether standing, seated, or lying down. 18 Jan 2023Finding Refuge in the Body, a Meditation with Sean Fargo00:12:56
When looking to feel safe, grounded, at peace, or joyful, we typically search outside of the body for something to help put us at ease. But tranquility is available in our own body, at all times. In this guided meditation, Mindfulness Exercises founder Sean Fargo guides us to become more mindful of the areas within ourselves that offer us safe refuge .  We’re invited to breathe, soften and allow, noticing which parts of the body feel calm, relaxed and full of presence. Becoming more mindful of these grounding sensations offers us the opportunity to take refuge in the body, from moment to moment, throughout our day.  Listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. You can practice this body scan meditation while standing, seated, or lying down. Sean Fargo is a former Buddhist monk and founder of the online resource, Mindfulness Exercises. 03 Jan 2024Acknowledging Fear, A Meditation with Sean Fargo00:38:19
We all have fears. Some live on the surface, impacting our everyday lives, while others are more subtle. We may experience fear of failure, unworthiness, fear of the unknown, or fear of being alone. It’s also common to fear abandonment, engulfment, or the ultimate fear: non-existence, the fear of death and dying.  Although it may not be possible to become completely fearless, we can find more spaciousness and peace by being with and exploring our fears. In this guided meditation, Sean Fargo invites us to open to our fears. As we sit with whatever fear that arises, exploring with a caring curiosity, we might find that our fears are not what we thought they were. They may even seem less scary. Listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Practice with eyes opened or closed, in a posture that balances comfort with alertness. 21 Jun 2023Mindfulness of the Head Space, A Meditation with Sean Fargo00:22:51
We’re often “caught up in our heads,” pushed and pulled by our thoughts. In mindfulness practice, we typically balance this thought-centered focus by directing awareness away from the head to the body and heart. In this guided meditation, Sean Fargo invites us to take a different approach. We practice intentionally remaining in the headspace, observing sensation (versus thoughts) in and around the head with tenderness, care and a gentle awareness.   Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Find a posture that balances comfort with alertness, whether standing, seated, or lying down. May this meditation be of benefit to you in your mindfulness journey. 25 Oct 2023Embodied Awareness of Breath, A Meditation with Sean Fargo00:24:40
When you bring mindfulness to the breath, do you include the entirety of your body, incorporating all your senses? Mindfulness of breathing is not merely a cognitive process, one that takes place in the head. In this guided meditation, Sean Fargo, founder of Mindfulness Exercises, invites us to observe our breathing using the body itself. Embodying awareness in this experiential manner connects us to the here and now, the only place where genuine happiness and contentment exists.   Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. 24 Apr 2024Sensing Beyond The Body, a Meditation with Sean Fargo00:28:03
Ancient wisdom traditions recognize the mind not as something limited to the brain, but as an expansive, heart-based awareness that extends throughout the body and beyond. One benefit of mindfulness meditation is that it can help us learn to connect to such awareness, for a profound experience of presence. In this guided meditation, led by Sean Fargo, we are invited to bring an awake and alert energy to the body as a whole. Using this embodied energy, we then sense into the space beyond for a more expansive experience of the mind.  Listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. 08 Nov 2023A Heartful Body Scan Meditation, with Sean Fargo00:24:00
A body scan meditation can be deeply relaxing, but relaxation is not the goal of mindfulness. Instead, mindfulness expands our capacity to be present with what is, whether or not what we experience is wanted.  When our mindfulness is imbued with a tender, caring, heartfulness, we’re capable of presence with that which may be uncomfortable or challenging. Paradoxically, lovingly accepting all that we experience often results in greater relaxation. In this guided meditation, Sean Fargo, the founder of Mindfulness Exercises, guides us through a mindful body scan. The practice emphasizes allowing for whatever we observe, as we apply a gentle heartfulness to our experience.  Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Practice with eyes opened or closed, in a posture that balances comfort with alertness. May this meditation be of benefit to you in your mindfulness journey. 23 Aug 2023An Apprenticeship with Grief, with Francis Weller00:28:51
How can we bring mindfulness to grief? Grief is something we all go through, for ourselves, our loved ones, our communities, and our planet. And yet, many of us are afraid to open up to the strong emotions of grief, sorrow and loss.  In this episode, we hear from psychotherapist, author and soul activist Francis Weller on how developing a long-term apprenticeship with grief can help us metabolize our sorrow and stay present for the fullness of this life.  Francis Weller, MFT, is a master of synthesizing diverse streams of thought from psychology, anthropology, mythology, alchemy, indigenous cultures and poetic traditions, a style he calls soul-centered psychotherapy. He is the author of several books on loss, sorrow, and grief, and offers a 4-session audio course, An Apprenticeship with Sorrow: Community, Ritual, and the Sacred Work of Grief.  This talk is a brief excerpt from Francis Weller’s guest teacher presentation to those enrolled in the Mindfulness Exercises Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program. 14 Feb 2024Loving-Kindness For A Loved One, A Meditation with Sean Fargo00:23:38
Loving-kindness meditation, or metta meditation, helps us cultivate feelings of warmth and goodwill toward others. Ideally, we extend this love to all beings, everywhere. For most of us, however, such a boundless expression of care is something we need to work up to.    In this loving-kindness meditation guided by Sean Fargo, we are invited to open the heart by practicing with someone we already have loving feelings for. By bringing mindfulness to the sensation of metta in our body, heart and mind, we encourage loving-kindness to grow and expand.   Listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. 08 Feb 2023Grounding, Calming Breath Meditation, with Sean Fargo00:22:52
When we’re too “in our heads”, disconnected from the body and the earth itself, we become anxious, scattered, restless and ill at ease. Intentionally bringing our attention back to the body and our connection to the ground can help us feel more stable, centered, rooted and calm. This is part of the process and benefit of grounding.  This guided meditation with Sean Fargo helps calm anxiety by grounding us in the body, and connecting us to the present moment. We’re invited to sense into the breath and our connection to the earth simultaneously. As we develop greater mindfulness of our grounded presence, we become more capable of carrying this calm and stability from our practice into the rest of our day.   Listen in a safe, quiet place where you are relatively free from distraction. Practice in a comfortable posture that allows for stillness. Sean Fargo is a former Buddhist monk and founder of the online resource, Mindfulness Exercises. 30 Aug 2023Opening to Gladness, A Meditation with Sean Fargo00:13:21
Who makes your heart sing? Sensing into the presence of someone who loves us deeply, who offers us unconditional kindness, can help us connect to present-moment feelings of gladness. This may be someone we know personally, or anyone we look up to as a source of care and comfort.  In this guided meditation with Sean Fargo, we’re invited to bring to mind one such person, and to sense into the gladness we feel when in their (imagined) presence. We explore that gladness as a sensation in the body and breath. By doing so, we become more familiar with it, and thus potentially more aware of its presence in everyday life.  Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. 28 Sep 2022Sensing into Safety Meditation, with Sean Fargo00:15:08
With meditation we can practice nurturing and growing a sense of safety for ever-present access to ease. Each of us has a memory, somewhere, of a safe place where we feel at ease, balanced, and welcomed to take refuge. This memory is stored in the body. We might feel a sense of safety in the belly, the heart or the hands, for example.  In this episode, Mindfulness Exercises founder, Sean Fargo, leads us in a meditation on sensing into safety. The practice begins with an invitation to check in and observe how the body is feeling in this present moment. Sean then gently invites us to notice where we feel a sense of safety. By placing our mindful attention in that space, we invite the sensation of safety to grow.      Sean Fargo is a former Buddhist monk and founder of the online resource, Mindfulness Exercises. 13 Jul 2022Mindfulness through an Equity Lens: Building Bridges with Michelle Maldonado00:44:05
When viewed through an equity lens, mindfulness helps us connect with others and overcome unconscious biases. In this episode, Michelle Maldonado encourages us to explore mindfulness not merely as a personal practice, but as a way of being in the world. When viewed from an equity lens, mindfulness becomes a powerful tool for transforming our judgment, unconscious bias and (often unintentional) microaggressions into opportunities for curiosity, introspection, and connection. Today’s topics include moving from judgment to curiosity, cultivating inner awareness to remove blind spots, and how to truly be anti-racist. Mindfulness and emotional intelligence educator Michelle Maldonado is a former corporate and tech attorney turned CEO of Lucenscia, a global firm dedicated to human flourishing and mindful business transformation. Michelle has worked with the world’s most powerful organizations in the education, industry and government sectors, with the goal of elevating human consciousness and alleviating suffering. Most of us only want to be happy and free from our pain. But how comfortable are we with the sensation of happiness? It can be challenging to be present with this emotion, especially in the face of so much global suffering. In this guided meditation with Sean Fargo, we’re invited to cultivate feelings of happiness by bringing to mind a past joyful experience. By working with memory, we invite happiness into the present moment. In this way, happiness is always available, here and now.  Listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. 31 Jan 2024Befriending Body, Emotion, And Spirit, A Meditation with Sean Fargo00:22:15
Every emotion has value, even those we might label as uncomfortable or unwelcome. Anger, for example, can help us set healthy boundaries. Grief can help us process loss, and jealousy can provide us with deep insight. When we allow ourselves to feel what we feel, there’s always something to be learned. In this mindfulness meditation guided by Sean Fargo, we are invited to tenderly listen to the body, the heart and spirit, to sense into what emotions are present and to practice presence with them. By befriending the entirety of our experience, we identify not with fleeting phenomena, but with the loving awareness that takes it all in. 06 Jul 2022Dr. Gabor Maté on Compassionate Inquiry, with Sean Fargo00:33:03
Each of us longs to be seen, heard and loved. Inquiring about our experience with curiosity and compassion lets us face old pains and strong emotions we’ve long ignored, which can lead to healing if we feel safe in our bodies, in the present moment, and in secure relationship with others. Through the method of Compassionate Inquiry, Dr. Gabor Maté teaches therapists, counselors and individuals to uncover the unconscious dynamics that run our lives, and find freedom from these habits. The method has gained worldwide recognition for its enlightening, empowering approach to healing. In a safe space, connected to our body, our breath and the present moment, we’re guided to gently uncover the layers of childhood trauma and suppressed emotion at the root of our illness and addiction. Although we begin with a guide, compassionate inquiry is ultimately a practice we can attend to on our own. In this episode, Gabor and Sean discuss the relationship between Compassionate Inquiry and the kind, non-judgmental curiosity we learn through the practice of mindfulness, the 5 levels of compassion that comprise the Compassionate Inquiry process, and why being triggered is not always a bad thing, especially within the safe container of compassionate, kind awareness.  Dr. Gabor Maté is a best selling author and sought-after speaker whose experience is rooted in 20 years of practice as a physician in family practice, palliative care, and addiction. This interview is a brief excerpt from a presentation he gave to the Mindfulness Exercises Mindfulness Teacher Training program. 29 Nov 2023Inviting Devotion Into Mindfulness Practice, with Oren Jay Sofer and Sean Fargo00:27:57
Devotion is not a quality that’s often talked about in secular mindfulness. But perhaps it should be.  Devotion can be an inspiring means of getting out of our heads, out of our own way, and connecting to our own hearts and communities. It need not be reserved for the divine. For mindfulness teachers, devotion can also help reinforce a sense of humility and reverence that makes our teaching both more impactful and fulfilling.  In this episode, Sean Fargo speaks with Oren Jay Sofer about his new book, “Your Heart Was Made for This: Contemplative Practices for Meeting a World in Crisis with Courage, Integrity and Love.” They discuss the quality of devotion and why we all could benefit from inviting devotion into our mindfulness practice. 01 Mar 2023Caring Curiosity Meditation, with Sean Fargo00:18:54
What’s uncomfortable or challenging in our lives tends to become the focus of our attention. This negativity bias can even arise within our mindfulness practice. But by framing mindfulness as caring curiosity, our attention becomes less judgmental and naturally imbued with more compassion and acceptance.  In this guided meditation, Sean Fargo invites us to sense into the body with caring curiosity, a gentle awareness in which whatever arises is not labeled as good or bad, but accepted, just as it is. If we can stay open with each new experience as it unfolds, we can then meet each experience with presence, grace and even a sense of awe and wonder, both within an beyond our formal meditation practice. Listen in a safe, quiet place where you are relatively free from distraction. Find a posture that balances comfort with alertness, whether standing, seated, or lying down. May this meditation be of benefit to you in your mindfulness journey. Sean Fargo is a former Buddhist monk and founder of the online resource, Mindfulness Exercises. Anyone can guide others in mindfulness, no matter their age or experience. Even a 5-year-old can teach mindfulness better than you think. In this episode, Sean Fargo, founder of Mindfulness Exercises, makes a bold statement about how even a kindergartener can teach mindfulness. Through a touching story about his daughter, Sean explains why teaching mindfulness is simpler than most people realize. It’s not about enlightenment or complicated techniques—it’s about inviting people to be present in the moment. Sean shares how his 5-year-old daughter helps him practice mindfulness by asking, "How are you feeling? Can you bring gentle awareness to this moment?" This episode shows that anyone can guide others in mindfulness, no matter their age or experience. Teaching mindfulness is about offering others a moment to connect with themselves, without judgment or expectations. 07 Jun 2023A Meditation on Feeling Tones, with Sean Fargo00:11:16
As thought, emotion, or sensation arises in our field of awareness, it quickly gets labeled as pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. This process of classifying our likes and dislikes is not wrong or bad. But when we mindlessly, habitually react to these labels, we sometimes bring harm to ourselves or others. Mindfulness of the feeling tones of pleasant, unpleasant and neutral is the first step in transforming this reactivity into a skillful, healthy response. This practice helps set the foundation for resilience and a balanced, stable mind. In this guided meditation, Mindfulness Exercises founder Sean Fargo invites us to become aware of sensation in the body. Whether we feel that sensation as pleasant, unpleasant or neutral, we practice holding all of it with tenderness and care.   Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Find a posture that balances comfort with alertness, whether standing, seated, or lying down. May this meditation be of benefit to you in your mindfulness journey. Please remember that mindfulness practice is not a replacement for therapy. Listen with care and self-compassion and practice within your window of tolerance. If this, or any other episode, triggers overwhelming, uncomfortable feelings, contact your healthcare provider. 01 Nov 2023Celebrating Mental Fitness, with John Macaskill and Sean Fargo00:30:14
The value of mindfulness isn’t always recognized in professions where high performance, mental toughness, and physical strength are celebrated. But what if we expanded our view of what it means to be fit, applauding mental fitness the same way we do physical fitness? Jon Macaskill is a former Navy SEAL turned mindfulness coach, speaker, and podcaster. He is also a graduate of the Mindfulness Exercises Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program. In this episode, he speaks with Sean Fargo about the professional and personal fulfillment he found via mindfulness, and why, after 24 years in the Navy, he is now inspired to share it with others. 29 Mar 2023Identifying Adverse Effects of Meditation, with Dr. Willoughby Britton00:30:26
Meditation’s benefits are often overhyped, while its discomfort, challenges, or ongoing adverse experiences tend to be little mentioned - even though the latter happens to around 1 in 10 meditators. This disparity can leave those who struggle with meditation feeling very alone and unsure where to find help. In this episode, we hear from clinical psychologist, professor and mindfulness expert Dr. Willoughby Britton. Willoughby presents a thorough, research-based overview on how to identify the adverse effects of meditation. She explains which ones are most likely to happen during mindfulness-based meditations. Perhaps more importantly, she offers both practitioners and teachers suggestions on what to do and where to go for help with the challenges of contemplative practice. This talk is a brief excerpt from Dr. Willoughby Britton’s guest teacher presentation to those enrolled in the Mindfulness Exercises Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program. 08 May 2024Softening and Opening, a Meditation with Sean Fargo00:17:35
What happens when someone tells you to relax? Often, the directive to relax or let go results in further tightening. When we attempt to relax on demand, we just can’t make it happen. Stress can then increase as we wrestle with what we may perceive as failure. Things change when we view letting go as a process versus a goal. In this mindfulness meditation, guided by Sean Fargo, we’re invited to soften our attachment to doing, to soften our need for control. In the process, we experience degrees of opening into the spaciousness of our experience. No longer wrestling with right or wrong, relaxed or not, we get closer to the calm we long for. 12 Oct 2022The Value of Healthy Anger00:04:08
Suppressing our anger, or attempting to rid ourselves of it completely is something many people try in order to become ‘more mindful’. But each of our emotions, including anger, serves a valuable purpose.  In this brief episode, Mindfulness Exercises founder Sean Fargo explains how, although we might aspire to be free from anger, a healthy expression of anger can motivate us to set boundaries, or take fierce, compassionate action for what we believe to be right. For a deeper dive into the subject of healthy anger, Sean recommends Sharon Salzberg’s book Real Change. Sean Fargo is the founder of Mindfulness Exercises and the lead teacher of the site’s Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program. This unique, self-paced certification program is accessible entirely online. Participants learn from Sean, his team, and the world’s most respected voices in mindfulness and meditation. 13 Sep 2023Contentment with Simply Being, A Meditation with Sean Fargo00:15:45
In a state of contentment, we fully accept the truth of this present moment, just as it is. There’s nothing missing and there’s nothing here that shouldn’t be. Mindfulness meditation, the art of practicing non-judgmental presence, can help us cultivate contentment for a more satisfactory experience of our everyday life. In this guided meditation, Sean Fargo invites us to ground ourselves in the body and in this moment by sensing into physical sensation. Having rooted ourselves in presence, we are encouraged to bring mindfulness to the quality of contentment. Familiarizing ourselves with the sensation of contentment helps us to be more aware of it outside our formal practice. Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Practice with eyes opened or closed, in a posture that balances comfort with alertness. 06 Dec 2023Allowing for Calm, A Sleep Meditation with Sean Fargo00:24:43
Meditating regularly, at any time of day, can help us fall asleep sooner and sleep more soundly when it’s time for bed. During daytime meditation, we typically try to stay awake and alert while practicing. With sleep meditation, the invitation is to let calm and relaxation take over, to allow yourself to drift off to sleep.  This calm and spacious guided meditation with Sean Fargo can be used as a daytime practice or as a sleep meditation. To meditate yourself to sleep, practice this meditation while lying down in a comfortable position with eyes closed. Stay present with the narration, yet allow for drowsiness as it arises. 26 Jul 2023Liminal Dreaming as a Mindful Practice, with Andrew Holecek00:33:28
What if falling asleep during meditation wasn’t a hindrance at all but, rather, an opportunity to mindfully explore liminal space? The intentional practice of liminal dreaming allows us to begin carrying mindfulness across the threshold between the waking and dreaming state.  In this episode, Andrew Holecek teaches us how to bring mindfulness to liminal states of mind. Liminal dreaming sets the foundation for the more advanced nighttime practice of lucid dreaming, but also, has its own unique benefits. For an overview of this and other nocturnal mindfulness practices, listen to Episode #036, Mindfulness While Sleeping, with Andrew Holecek  Andrew Holecek is an author and spiritual teacher who teaches worldwide on meditation, lucid dreaming, and Buddhist death preparation practices. His books include “Dream Yoga: Illuminating Your Life Through Lucid Dreaming” and “Dreams of Light: The Profound Daytime Practice of Lucid Dreaming.”  This talk is a brief excerpt from Andrew Holecek’s guest teacher presentation to those enrolled in the Mindfulness Exercises Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program. 24 May 2023A Meditation for Frustration, with Sean Fargo00:32:19
Annoyance, frustration and anger can be challenging emotions to work with. We often judge ourselves for feeling frustrated, equating this emotion with negativity or perhaps thinking it makes us a ‘bad person’. Other times, we might feel so righteous about our frustration that we hold to it tightly. By exploring how frustration feels in the body, we can learn to be present as it arises, neither avoiding nor grasping at it. In the resulting space that’s created, we can invite in self-compassion and understanding. After all, these emotions are not good or bad, nor right or wrong, they are what make us human.  In this guided meditation, Mindfulness Exercises founder Sean Fargo asks us to recall a past moment of slight annoyance or mild frustration. By sitting with this sensation and observing it, we learn we can let it move as it wants to.
