I can’t wait for you to dive into this episode with me because I think it’s SUCH an important topic & REFRAME!

 

Chugging coffee and/or pre workout FIRST THING in the morning is the NORM for so many people. BUT we do it without knowing WHAT it’s actually doing in your body and HOW it’s affecting your hormones.

 

Here’s some of the juicy details:

 

How having PRE WORKOUT/COFFEE/CAFFEINE first thing in the morning affects your body:

 

  1. It dehydrates you which SLOWS DOWN DIGESTION & INCREASES FATIGUE.⁣

 

  1. CAFFEINE is very STIMULATING to our nervous system & increases cortisol (stress hormone) that when functioning properly is already high in the morning (because it’s the hormone that wakes us up) & is going to increase more when you workout.

This continuous increase in cortisol leads to BLOOD SUGAR IMBALANCES & DECREASES PROGESTERONE.⁣

I cannot wait to dive into my philosophy and how important it is to really address the root cause rather than treating the symptom.

 

I always had an irregular period, I had IBS, facial hair, random rashes & migraines. I thought all of these problems were separate from each other & that my body was breaking down. I felt soooo confused.

 

I went to the gastroenterologist for my digestive problems & was offered a pill.

I went to the gyno for my irregular/non existent period and was offered the birth control pill.

I got blood work and everything was “normal”.

I went to the neurologist for my migraines and everything was normal so I was given another pill for that.

I cannot WAIT for you to hear today's episode! I think this may be one of the most important topics I've ever talked about on the show.

Today we're getting into the science & research around VITAMIN D3 & how it SIGNIFICANTLY reduces your chances of getting Covid 19. (& of course, I also go into the benefits Vitamin D3 has on your hormones).

  • 65-95% of Americans are deficient in Vitamin d.
  • D3 is a master hormone needed for hundreds of functions in the body.
  • We are especially low in this micronutrient because of the lack of sunshine we get without sunscreen.
    • We do NOT absorb vitamin d with sunscreen on!
  • This micronutrient regulates insulin levels which stabilizes blood sugar levels
  • It has also been linked to dopamine production & serotonin levels which increase mood.

 

Women with higher vitamin D3 levels are 4x MORE LIKELY to conceive via IVF than women with low levels (2012 issue of Human Reproduction- In the FLO by Alisa Vitti)

 

93% of women struggling with infertility have below normal levels of vitamin D3 (IN THE FLO)

  • this study holds across all races, ethnicities, genders & age ranges
  • over 65 and with multiple co morbidities- this info works for them as well
  • people who are deficient were twice as likely to be susceptible of infections

 

Studies have shown that Vitamin D isn’t effective & that’s because they’re not dosing it correctly. A single high dose of vitamin d doesn’t work when they have moderate to severe covid.

 

You must take a synergistic approach. Dosing every day- in therapeutic range, not a maintenance range. Enough in the blood stream for immune system to do it’s job.

23 Feb 202145. Root causes of MIGRAINES & NATURAL relief.00:21:18

I can’t wait for you to dive into today’s episode about all things migraines! I used to suffer monthly from debilitating migraines so I totally understand what you’re going through!

But it’s important to see where these migraines are coming from so we can address the root cause instead of putting a bandaid on the situation.

NSAIDS taken for migraines cause inflammation in your gut leading to leaky gut. They can also suppress ovulation, make headaches worse & put a bandaid on the root issue.

 

Hormonal headaches are cyclical and mostly occur just before or after your period, or around ovulation due to the spike in estrogen which triggers ovulation. I recommend tracking your migraines to pinpoint what’s going on.

 

NATURAL STRATEGIES

1. HYDRATING- 100oz a day with electrolytes

2. MAGNESIUM GLYCINATE- shown to prevent headaches- muscle relaxer, anti inflammatory & crucial for hormone health. 300mg daily- can increase to 600mg when you’re prone to getting a headache

Today we're chatting all about "random" symptoms that could be signs of a HORMONAL IMBALANCE!

Maybe you're not sure WHY you’re getting all these “RANDOM” symptoms? I used to feel the SAME WAY!⁣ I struggled with DIGESTIVE issues for YEARS! ⁣ I would be so BLOATED after EVERY SINGLE thing I ate it would feel like I was 3️ months pregnant.⁣ I would go back and forth with CONSTIPATION and go DAYS without going to the bathroom!⁣

I also used to get severe MIGRAINES at least once a month.⁣ On top of that, I had more obvious hormonal imbalance symptoms such as an IRREGULAR period that turned into a NONEXISTENT period.⁣

But I had absolutely NO IDEA that my BLOATING, CONSTIPATION & MIGRAINES were coming from the SAME ROOT CAUSE that my IRREGULAR periods were coming from: A HORMONAL IMBALANCE.⁣

For me it was PCOS. For others it isn’t necessarily a syndrome like that, but rather an imbalance of specific hormones in the body.⁣

I talk to so many women who say to me, “I’m not sure if I’d be a good fit to work with you because I don’t know that I have hormonal imbalance. But I do have ACNE, I’m extremely FATIGUED, I have a lot of CRAVINGS, and I really CAN’T LOSE WEIGHT.”⁣

Those are CLASSIC hormone IMBALANCE SYMPTOMS.⁣

But when we go to our doctors with these issues, instead of identifying the CAUSE of these symptoms & recognizing they are ALL CONNECTED, they treat the SYMPTOM with MEDICATION.⁣

When we're trying to be "perfect" in whatever area of our life, what's actually happening is that:

  • We're robbing ourselves of joy

  • We cause more harm than good

And plus, perfect doesn’t exist- everyone’s definition is different. There's such beauty in the mess that we need to learn to trust the process & not take life too seriously.

Steps you can implement to help your perfectionist tendencies:

Step 1: notice what areas you’re trying to be perfect in

Step 2: when you notice it in real time ask yourself "why do I feel the need to be perfect? Where is it coming from?"

Step 3: catch the negative self talk when you feel guilty about not being perfect and replace it with something that serves you.

I can’t wait for you to dive into this super quick episode about tracking your period! Are you PAYING ATTENTION to your period?

 

Do you know the answers to these questions?:

WHEN does it come?⁣

For HOW MANY days?⁣

What COLOR is it?⁣

Is it HEAVY?⁣

Is it LIGHT?⁣

Are there blood CLOTS?⁣

Is it CONSISTENT?⁣

Your period is your monthly REPORT CARD.⁣ It’s our 5th VITAL SIGN. A PHYSICAL sign of your INTERNAL & OVERALL health.⁣ I NEVER payed attention to my period because I had NO IDEA WHY it mattered!⁣ It wasn’t even something I consciously thought about it!⁣ If I got my period okay I got it.  If I didn’t, I didn’t.

I NEVER kept track of it. I NEVER thought I NEEDED to. I never knew ANYTHING about it because I was never TAUGHT anything about it!⁣

⁣⁣

If we’re having IRREGULAR cycles, PAINFUL periods, HEAVY periods, NO PERIODS, etc. THAT’S our body’s way of TELLING US there’s an UNDERLYING issue that NEEDS to be UNCOVERED & ADDRESSED!⁣

The 1st step is PAYING ATTENTION to your period.⁣

STEPS TO TAKE GOING FORWARD:

  • Get a tracker app (I use myFLO)
  • Count how many days it is
  • NOTICE the SYMPTOMS you get, NOTICE the COLOR & the CONSISTENCY.⁣
  • DAY 1 IS THE FIRST DAY OF BLEEDING. 
  • A regular period is anywhere from 21-35 days.
  • What’s important is that it’s always the same give or take a couple days.⁣

 

IF I knew that OVULATING was CRUCIAL to my OVERALL HEALTH, METABOLISM, THYROID, BONES, SKIN, HAIR, STRESS RESPONSE, I would’ve paid more attention & given more WEIGHT to the fact that I wasn’t getting a period at all for 2 full years!⁣ It wasn’t a PRIORITY because I wasn’t trying to get pregnant.⁣

I had no idea that OVULATING was CRUCIAL for more than just pregnancy.⁣ Learn from MY MISTAKES & start CARING ABOUT & PAYING ATTENTION TO your periods. EVERY MONTH.⁣

08 Jan 202132. [CYCLE PHASES] INTERVIEW: Changing your WORKOUTS based on your CYCLE PHASE with JOELLE SUESS00:39:42

I can’t wait for you to hear today’s conversation between me and Joelle Suess about how crucial it is to alter your work outs based off of our cycle phases.

 

Some quick information on Joelle:

 

My name is Joelle Suess (see-s) I have been in the health and fitness industry for 10 years. I studied dietetics in college, taught group fitness, personal trained clients, and then settled into the world of virtual health and fitness coaching. I am a mom of 2 boys and my husband and I are both born and raise Minnesotans!

She is the host of the  FEMININE FITNESS podcast. Follow her on INSTAGRAM @joellesuess where you can find more information about her Feminine Fitness Program.

 

Here’s what we get into:

 

4 phases to our cycle: Follicular, Ovulatory, Luteal, Menstruation (check out  Episode 5 for some more info on cycle phases) 

 

1. Follicular 7-10 days: energy & hormones are rising. This is a great time to try something new and do workouts such as cardio, dance, running etc.

 

2. Ovulatory phase 3-5 days: energy & hormones are at their highest peak in this phase. You have energy to burn in this ohase so this is a great time to do more spin, HIIT workouts etc.

 

*NOTE: If you have a hormonal imbalance & are at the beginning of your journey, your body may not respond well to intense workouts in any phase of your cycle. Keep your exercises from 20-30 mins max and listen to your body. You should feel energetic after a workout NOT depleted.

 

3. Luteal 10-14 days long: The first 1/2 of this phase you may still have energy left over from Ovulation as it is slowly declining preparing for menstruation. Use the beginning part of this phase for slow strength training or intense yoga. Later in this phase scale back to lighter movements like walking, pilates, stretching, yoga etc.

 

4. Menstruation 3-7 days long: Your hormones are at their lowest concentrations so this is the time to REST. Especially the first few days of bleeding. Later on in the week you can incorporate walking, yin yoga, mat pilates.

 

Never prioritize waking up early to work out over sleep. SLEEP is more important.

 

Switching up your exercises and slowing down during your luteal & menstruation phase will help you LOSE WEIGHT and BALANCE YOUR HORMONES.

29 Sep 20207. [PERIOD HEALTH] WHY my PERIOD SKIPPED a month & HOW I’m getting it back on track.00:20:05

If you've been with me for a while, you already know I have PCOS and ALWAYS had an irregular period that once turned into NO period for a full two YEARS. (Check out EPISODE 1 for my full hormonal journey)

Thankfully, I changed my nutrition & lifestyle so I have been getting it regularly for the last 2.5 years!

HOWEVER, my cycle is VERY SENSITIVE to intense stress & transitions which is why my period was 10 days late, causing me to not get a period in August.

(10 days late might not seem like a huge deal to you if your period is all over the map like mine used to be. I GET IT! BUT, this is a sign from my body that things are starting to get out of balance. Taking action NOW will prevent the irregularities to continue.)

Let's get on the same page: On August 3rd I formally resigned from my 9 year teaching career to work full time in my Nutrition Business.

While it was the easiest decision in the sense that I 10000% knew this is what I wanted to do, it was EXTREMELY challenging to wrap my head around it and overcome the fear.

For the months leading up to it, my mind was CONSTANTLY running about how scared & overwhelmed I was.

This then affected my cortisol levels, routines & sleep patterns which caused my hormones to get jacked up.

Here are the 3 steps I’m taking to get back on track

  1. Eating dinner earlier
  2. Prioritizing sleep
  3. Scheduling in down time in nature

It’s not about being PERFECT, it’s about knowing WHAT caused it & exactly HOW to rebalance your system.

Today we are getting sassy and chatting about how to deal with other people’s reactions/opinions to your lifestyle change (or really to anything in life). I hope this episode empowers you to stand in your confidence and do what's best for YOU!

 

I cannot wait to hear what you think about today’s episode! It’s a sassy one for sure but one that was on my heart. I get asked about this a lot from my clients so I figured you might be experiencing some of the same feelings.

So…how can you handle peoples reactions/thoughts when making a lifestyle change?!

[I’m so Lucky to have amazing people around me.]

When you care more about what you’re doing than you care about what they think then it doesn’t matter.

When your why is deeper that’s all that matters.

Why do other people care what I am or am not putting in my body? They’re not the ones that have to wake up in my body tomorrow. I do. And I know what feels good and what doesn’t.

I’m not going to eat something that makes me feel like shit just because someone else has a problem with it.

You eating or not eating, drinking or not drinking, doing or not doing something has absolutely 0 affect on anybody else. Other than it bringing up an insecurity that they might have.

Most of the time when people are judging you, or making fun of you, it’s because it’s triggering something in them.

That’s not your issue to overcome. That’s theres.

It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them.

If you want to change your lifestyle but you’re holding back or are nervous because you’re afraid of what someone else is going to think about it, you’re literally not improving your life because it’s going to make someone else uncomfortable.

If you do that you’re never going to be fulfilled in life. You’re letting someone else run your life.

Because how you do one thing is how you do everything.

Because of how much I felt better and how much I was learning about it, I couldn't care less about what anyone else thought about it. I literally blocked it out and just focussed on what I was doing and why I was doing it.

And if anyone made a comment I would just laugh it off with them and move on. It’s not always worth it to defend yourself because they might not be open to that conversation and you have nothing to prove.

The message I want to give to you today is that if you are interested in making a lifestyle change, obvi you are if you’re listening to this, but you’re hesitating or feeling uncomfortable when you go out to eat or go places because other people might feel uncomfortable, please don’t let that stop you.

If I let the opinions of other people stop me I wouldn't be where I am today.

I can’t wait for you to dive into today’s episode where we chat about how we can better serve ourselves by changing how we talk to ourselves and how we can’t expect to always be “perfect”! I’m a (recovering) perfectionist so this topic is super close to home & something I’m constantly working on.


 

Here’s what you can expect!

 

  • What I’ve been working on: Aiming to eat before 7pm because that's when I notice my PCOS symptoms are most at bay. Over the weekend I got so upset & frustrated because it was after 7 when I ate & I turned into a monster over it!
  • Perfect doesn’t exist. PROGRESS ALWAYS WINS. STRIVE FOR BETTER NOT PERFECT.
  • Maybe you had a few extra drinks over thanksgiving or ate some stuff you’ve been avoiding.  Maybe you skipped a workout.
  • Whatever it is for YOU, we ALL go through it. The feeling of DAMN, I “SHOULD’VE” done this or I “SHOULDN'T” have done that!⁣
  • Maybe it’s TRUE you made CHOICES that weren’t EXACTLY in line with your health & hormone goals.⁣
  • BUT that doesn’t mean YOU SUCK & need to feel GUILTY about it! It means you have an OPPORTUNITY to GROW & get BETTER!⁣
  • If you hold yourself to an EXPECTATION that’s UNATTAINABLE, you’ll NEVER be PROUD of yourself for the SMALL GAINS that turn into BIG GAINS that you’re doing OVERALL.⁣
  • We need to look at everything as, am I BETTER than who I was yesterday? Am I taking steps in the RIGHT DIRECTION?⁣
  • When you’re changing your lifestyle it can be OVERWHELMING & if you don’t look at it as being BETTER than BEFORE, rather than being PERFECT, you’re missing out on an OPPORTUNITY to feel PROUD of yourself & give yourself the MOMENTUM to KEEP GOING!⁣
  • When we CELEBRATE 3 days of lemon water instead of feeling DEFEATED from the 4 days without it, it make us want to keep going!⁣
  • Be PROUD of YOURSELF for the changes you ARE MAKING!⁣
  • Acknowledge them & it’ll help you CONTINUE making progress. PROGRESS over PERFECTION. ALWAYS!
  • I’m not saying to not hold yourself to a high standard and take care of yourself. BUT beating yourself up over it ISN;T DOING ANYTHING.
  • Would you say the things you say to yourself to your friend, sister, daughter? Probably not!
  • We need to treat ourselves & talk to ourselves internally like we would to the little girl inside of us
  • You’re not a piece of shit because you didnt 100% stick to something. You made a choice. That doesn’t make you a failure.
  • Do we always want to be getting better & making the best choices we can? Of course. But not at the cost of our mental well being.

I cannot wait to jam out on this topic with you! I love looking at the body as a WHOLE and all connected parts because that’s exactly how it is.

It’s so empowering to know that we can improve our health & quality of life with way more than just nutrition.

Our gut is directly connected to our brain via the vagus nerve. Because of that stress causes inflammation in our gut and when our gut is inflamed it causes stress.

Things that inflame our gut: sugar, gluten, dairy, stress, environmental toxins, medications (antibiotics, hormonal birth control, Advil etc). This inflammation can lead to anxiety, depression & stress.

Stress can cause constipation & bloating because of the vagus nerve connection.

 

TIPS TO IMPROVE DIGESTION & STRESS:

1. 3- 5 deep breaths before every meal to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system

2. Being present while eating & chewing thoroughly (not working through it, multi tasking, texting while watching tv etc)

3. Not looking at your phone first thing in the morning- taking time to check in with you first.

4. Meditation

Back when my period came every few months & then eventually disappeared for 2 FULL YEARS, I had NOO clue that the quality of my period (or lack there of) was a sign of an underlying health issue. AND that it was as important as my heart rate, body temperature, respiratory rate & blood pressure!

  • A vital sign is a bodily response you can monitor to measure how your body is functioning. The four most commonly excepted vital signs are heart rate, body temperature, respiratory rate the number of breaths you take each minute, and blood pressure.
  • By measuring your vitals your practitioner gains a window into your overall health and is able to see subtle warning signs of an underlying health issue
  • Just like your heart rate, body temperature, respiratory rate, and blood pressure, your menstrual cycle is such a central part of who you are that if your body isn’t functioning normally neither will your cycle.
  • The American Academy of pediatrics and the American College of obstetricians and gynecologist report that ministration should be monitored as a vital sign adolescent girls. 
  • This is emphasizing the important role of menstrual patterns and reflecting overall health status.
  • Patterns meaning regularity in cycle length, consistency of blood flow and amount of days of bleeding and symptoms. 
  • Regular ovulation is only possible when your endocrine system and reproductive system are functioning normally an irregular or abnormal cycle is an early warning sign of an underlying health problem

  1. IDENTIFY YOUR WHY
    • You need a FOUNDATION you can revert back to when things get CHALLENGING!
    • Not a SURFACE LAYER why. “I want to improve my health/lose weight/feel better.” WHY do you want to improve your health/lose weight/feel better?
    • WHO is going to BENEFIT from you showing up?
    • WHO is going to be NEGATIVELY AFFECTED if you DON’T show up?

 2. CHOOSE ONE THING

  • Changing multiple things at once creates OVERWHELM & leads to GIVING UP.
  • Pick ONE thing you want to have in your routine & stick to it for AT LEAST A WEEK. IDEALLY, until it becomes a HABIT that you don’t have to think about!
  • Consistency helps you GAIN CONFIDENCE.
  • Consistency AND confidence =  RESULTS.

3. ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER.

  • Tell someone your GOAL so they can check in on you & make sure you’re sticking to your word. Knowing someone is going to ask you if you did “X” will keep you showing up.

I can't wait for you to dive into today's episode! I've been down the cravings rollercoaster & I know you probably have too! These tips are for combatting cravings in the moment.

 

So where do cravings COME FROM?! Because you know I'm all about that ROOT CAUSE!

  • Comes from blood sugar disregulation & insulin resistance
  • A main function of the endocrine system is to transport glucose to your brain, muscles & heart. If anything about the process goes wrong, you’re going to have disregulated blood sugar which doesn’t allow any of the other parts of the endocrine system to function properly.
  • Unstable blood sugar is one of the most important underlying causes behind hormonal imbalances.
  • When you eat refined carbs (sugar), your body breaks it down into simple sugars like glucose. Your pancreas reacts to this load of glucose by releasing the hormone insulin which is meant to go inside of our cells.
  • Your pancreas also reacts to LOW blood sugar levels from not eating ENOUGH or waiting too long between meals
  • When you're insulin resistant- this excess insulin doesn’t go into the cells & perform their job because the cells are RESISTANT to it. Instead, it stays floating around in the bloodstream causing weight gain, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes & too much testosterone which leads to facial hair, acne, hair loss

 

TIPS to help cravings in the moment:

1. Set timer for 10 minutes before giving into the craving

2. Drink a full glass of room temp water

3. Journal/breathe think about why you’re craving what you’re craving and if it's actually hunger or if it’s emotional

4. If you're having a sweet craving, have a tea latte- hemp/oat milk with herbal tea and 1tbsp cacao powder. If you're having a salty craving, try carrots or celery & hummus/guac or cucumbers with sea salt & hummus/guac.

Today we’re chatting all about progesterone & ovulation because it’s VITAL for our hormones & overall health. Ovulation is the ONLY way you make PROGESTERONE which is a hormone that is beneficial for mood, energy, libido, insulin response, thyroid, skin, hair, metabolism more. 

Progesterone is essential for healthy reproduction & periods but it also supports your brain, immune system, and detoxification enzymes! Here are 7 ways Progesterone supports you! (Adapted by Lara Briden- sources linked below!)

 

  1. Boosts energy by stimulating the thyroid and amping up your metabolism. That’s why your body temperature goes up half a degree when you make progesterone after ovulation. It also relieves adrenal fatigue which is really HPA dysregulation because it stabilizes the communication between the hypothalamus (modulates the endocrine system through its connections with the pituitary gland)  & adrenal glands. 
  2. Soothes mood and rescues sleep because stimulates sleep centers in the brain and is essential for combatting PMS insomnia 
  3. Nourishes hair and clears skin because it reduces male hormones (androgens) by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. The result is faster-growing hair, less skin oil (sebum), and fewer skin break-outs.

HOW TO TRACK OVULATION:

  1. Cervical fluid- egg white consistency & stretchy leading up to ovulation
    1. Before ovulation it’s between 97 and 97.7
    2. After ovulation it increases about .5 and maintains that higher level until your period
    3. Take your temperature before getting out of bed, at the same time every morning.
  2. Tracking Basal Body Temperature.

15 Sep 20205. [Q&A] SIGNS of OVULATION, cycle PHASES, BEST types of EXERCISE, how to identify an IRREGULAR period.00:28:14

Today I'm answering 4 AMAZING questions straight from YOU in the community!

 

1. MARTHA: How do you naturally check for ovulation? What are the physical signs?

 

*Bleeding is not a sign of ovulation because your follicles (small sac of fluid) still make estrogen as they grow and try to ovulate and eventually that uterine lining will have to shed.

OVULATION is when one of your follicles will grow big enough, is stimulated by LH & finally ruptures & releases an egg.

 SIGNS OF OVULATION:

  1. Egg white consistency, stretchy, stays wet & happens BEFORE OVULATION but can occur anytime estrogen levels are high
  2. Basal Body Temperature (waking temp) will SPIKE after ovulation (progesterone raises your temp) & stays high until you get your period about 10-14 days later. Before ovulation your average temperature is about 97-97.7 and will increase about .5 degrees after ovulation.
  3. Mid luteal blood test to show higher levels of progesterone

2. SAM: What do you mean when you say cycle phases?

We have 4 CYCLE PHASES:

1. FOLLICULAR

  • hormones are low but estrogen, testosterone and FSH (A pituitary hormone that stimulates ovarian follicles to grow)are slowly increasing & stimulating your follicles to make estrogen

2. OVULATION

  • the rise in FSH stimulates the hormones to release an egg
  • Estrogen continues to rise to thicken the lining

3. LUTEAL

  • Progesterone rises. Progesterone counterbalances estrogen- yin to yang. Progesterone thins uterine lining & estrogen thickens it.
  • BENEFITS: reduces inflammation, builds muscle, promotes sleep, protects against heart disease, calms nervous system, supports metabolism, thyroid, skin & hair health.

4. MENSTRUATION

  • hormones decline quickly to their lowest levels 

1st half of cycle (follicular &  ovulation) you have more energy than 2nd half (Luteal and menstruation)

3. CASSIE: Are slow exercises beneficial or do you need to do intense workouts to make an impact?

  • If you’re in the early stages of managing your PCOS or healing your hormonal imbalances, it’s important to keep your workouts to no more than 30 minutes. The time limitation will prevent excess cortisol production and adrenal fatigue.
  • When you get your heart pumping your body burns glucose in your bloodstream for energy. The supply only lasts about 30 minutes. After that your body turns to your adrenal glands which start pumping out the stress hormone cortisol which converts stored fat into usable glucose so you have the energy to continue working out.

  • John Kabat—Zinn Mindfulness based stress reduction clinic in Massachusetts 
  • Study: Basketball athletes were split into 2 groups. One athlete was shooting free throws for several weeks. The other athlete didn’t practice. He sat and visualized him successfully doing it. At the end of the study, when the athlete who visualized the free throws actually played he was more successful and had a different perspective (even when he missed) than the player that was physically practicing for weeks.
  • Mindfulness calms your nervous system, lowering cortisol levels which is so important for hormone balance.
  • Your mind, body & hormones are all connected- you will not be able to fully heal if you are only focussed on food and exercise.

I’m so excited to teach you this simple formula so you can create your favorite smoothie! Ever wonder what you need to actually include in a smoothie to ensure it’s hormone healthy? Well today you’re going to learn exactly that. Not only is this amazing for your hormones, it’s also immune boosting, feeds your brain & is skin brightening.

 

*ALL ORGANIC INGREDIENTS- or at least the dirty dozen organic (check out Episode 2 for more information and/or head to ewg.org)

1. 70% greens (rotate for variety)

2. 30% fruit (phase of cycle rotation- berries)

3. 2 tbsp healthy fat (chia seed gel, flax/pumpkin/sesame/sunflower)

Today I'm chatting all about alcohol & your hormones! Here’s what to expect:

  1. How alcohol affects your hormones & PMS
  2. How it affects people with PCOS differently
  3. The most ideal time in your cycle to avoid drinking
  4. The “best/better” options of alcohol
  5. How to minimize the negative effects of alcohol

DETAILS & RESEARCH:

  • Alcohol increases estrogen production (even after 1 drink)
  • EXCESS ESTROGEN SYMPTOMS: Irregular or heavy periods, water retention, breast swelling and tenderness, headaches, migraines, fibrocystic breast changes, weight gain, mood swings, hair loss, painful periods ,PMS
  • Drinking makes you 45% MORE LIKELY to experience PMS symptoms if you’re having 1 drink a day.
  • More than 1 drink a day increases your PMS symptoms by 79%.
  • How it makes PMS worse
    • Dehydration
    • Depletes Magnesium
    • Fluctuates hormone levels
    • Keeps your liver busy so you can’t process hormones
    • Affects gut microbiome so you can’t eliminate hormones
    • Imbalanced blood sugar levels
  • Estrogen levels peak just before ovulation & about a week before your period starts, so those would be ideal times to avoid drinking.

Nutrition, movement & supplementation are critical to overall wellness, but they only take us so far.⁣ When we hyper focus on food & movement alone we end up ignoring a huge part of our being.⁣

I became a Holistic Nutritionist because I believe that everything is connected: our mind, body, emotions & spirit.⁣ That’s how I’ve approached my health & how I lead my clients.⁣

⁣⁣Our body needs more than just food & exercise to truly thrive.⁣ It also needs emotional & spiritual nourishment.

When we IGNORE the emotional & spiritual parts of us that’s when:⁣ stress takes over⁣, we feel disconnected⁣, we feel a sense of lack⁣, we feel scattered & drained⁣, we feel low vibe because we’re draining our emotional & spiritual cup. We’re pretending they’re not there.⁣

Those feelings of lack & disconnection are a result of the lack of emotional & spiritual nourishment. (& probably old beliefs we need to rewrite).

PLUS since our emotions are connected to our body, they can manifest into PHYSICAL symptoms.⁣

A lot of what we experience physically can be traced back to a repressed emotion.⁣

I can’t wait for you to dive into this episode because it’s super important! There’s more and more talk on intermittent fasting and all of it’s benefits which I’m not denying! BUT there isn’t enough of a conversation about how it can ALSO DISRUPT OUR HORMONES.

 

To start, it’s crucial to have times when we aren’t eating. When you eat around the clock your body stays in storage mode. If it’s constantly taking in food- it can never burn sugar & fat so we need to make sure we have certain points of fasting.


 

Extended periods without food tell the body that now isn’t a good time for reproduction.

BUT you need to know that estrogen and progesterone do more in the body than just get us pregnant. Estrogen helps us with metabolism, weight loss, mood,  anxiety and stress, energy, bone density, and cognitive function.

 

Intermittent fasting can disrupt estrogen balance and mess up these essential physiological processes.

 

Intermittent fasting has been associated with numerous health benefits (improved insulin sensitivity, reduced body fat, cognitive function, lower risk of chronic health conditions) but it is also linked to hormone disruption. Here’s a close-up look at the cascade of hormone imbalances that can start with intermittent fasting.

 

First, intermittent fasting can disrupt estrogen balance. Estrogen imbalance may show up as: low energy, poor glucose control, weight gain, impaired cognitive function, decreased bone density, poor muscle tone, reduced skin & hair health, poorer cardiovascular health, infertility.

 

A disruption in one hormone system in the body can trigger other hormone imbalances. The other major hormone considerations for women when it comes to intermittent fasting are cortisol, the stress hormone, and thyroid hormone. When cortisol is imbalanced, symptoms include:

  • Anxiety
  • Low energy
  • Insomnia
  • Feeling wired-but-tired
  • sugar cravings

 

Imbalanced thyroid hormones symptoms include:

  • Weight gain
  • Brain fog
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Dry skin
  • Dry hair
  • Irregular periods
  • Trouble regulating body temperature

I can’t wait for you to hear this episode because it is GAME CHANGING.

Motivation isn’t what’s going to get you your results because that comes and goes. If you’re in a bad mood, didn’t get a good amount of sleep your motivation is in the tank.

 

Creating habits that you’re consistent with is what leads you to your results. But in order to stay consistent with those habits you need to adopt the identity of the person you want to become.

 

So if something you struggle with is getting in movement. Instead of waking up and being like eh I just don’t feel like doing it (there’s a diff between listening to your body & not having motivation to do it), if you adopt the identity of a person who moves their body daily in some way, you wouldn’t have that conversation in your head. You would say “ I’m a person that moves my body daily because I want to feel energetic."?

So excited to chat with you about this because I want you to enjoy eating our without feeling anxious!

The easiest cuisine’s I’ve found for being plant based when eating out are Mexican, Spanish, Italian & Asian.

Mexican & Spanish are super conducive for those who are dairy & gluten free. You can get rice & beans, veggie tacos etc.

Italian places have a lot of gluten free options: pastas or pizzas. There are also a lot of places that have vegan cheese options.

Start looking at appetizers and sides to bulk up on veggies.

Make sure you have some type of veggie before your meal especially if you’re eating animal products because animals don’t have fiber & fiber improves our gut microbiome. This also helps with portion control since the portion sizes at most restaurants is insane!

Don’t be afraid to ask for accommodations! Speak up and ask for what you want.

Just do your best and enjoy the experience! It’s not so much about the food it’s about enjoying the company that you’re there with.

And if you eat something you don’t normally eat, don’t beat yourself up about it. Enjoy it & get back into your routine the next day!

I’m SO happy you’re here for today’s conversation because it is EXTREMELY important to  know what’s normal & what isn’t. Our culture has made CRAMPS & period PAIN something that women should just “DEAL WITH” & “TOUGHEN UP” about because “that’s just what happens when you get your period.”

This is SO MESSED UP on SO MANY levels.⁣

Not only does it MINIMIZE the STRUGGLE & PAIN that some women go through on a MONTHLY basis, but it NORMALIZES something that ISN’T NORMAL.⁣

This makes women IGNORE an underlying problem that could be serious (such as ENDOMETRIOSIS).⁣

Mild/moderate cramping can be “normal.” If they are MINOR cramps you can tolerate & don’t need to take any medication/pain relief for.⁣

BUT if you’re having INTENSE CRAMPS where you’re reaching for Midol or even more intense medications, you can’t get out of bed, or you’re getting nauseous from the pain, that is NOT NORMAL.

We're talking about my struggles with facial hair growth, bloating, rashes/acne.

TIPS

Whenever you go to criticize a part of your body, whether that's facial hair, acne, weight, bloating etc, in that moment immediately notice it, forgive yourself for speaking negatively to yourself and then immediately focus on something you love about yourself.

Whether that’s your hair, your eyelashes, your butt, your nails, literally anything. Also personality wise, think about things that you love about yourself so that could start outweighing the things that you are self-conscious about.

01 Jan 202130. [BLOOD SUGAR] How to create a hormone balanced meal!00:12:02

It's so important to include a Protein, Fiber & a HEALTHY Fat in each meal in order to balance blood sugar which helps balance hormones!

Insulin regulates how much glucose or blood sugar actually gets into your cells. But when we are having poor eating habits or binging on tons of sugar, there's a problem. Insulin goes high but your cells eventually stop listening. This can also happen when you have inflammation. Even if your diet is perfect, inflammation can still occur and cause issues with insulin, which is especially a problem if you're really stressed.

If your cells aren’t responding to insulin, they don't take in sugar, they don't function correctly, and your blood sugar goes high, leading to a whole lot of hormonal issues & diabetes.

If you have insulin issues here are some symptoms you may experience. You're feeling shaky or anxious or irritable between meals. BLOOD WORK: You have a fasting blood sugar level greater than 85 mg/dL. You have difficulty avoiding things like chocolate, ice cream, potato chips or french fries.

Are you craving sugar all the time? This might be a sign of blood sugar issues. 

If you already know you have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), your fasting insulin is greater than six, or you’re holding onto way more body fat than you should be then getting a complete metabolic blood test may be in order.

PROTEIN, FIBER & FAT at every meal

This is the key to blood sugar balance. It keeps you full longer and helps you maintain optimal levels of blood sugar. When it comes to fat, aim for about 1-2 tablespoons with each meal. This will also increase your libido.

What’s an adequate amount of protein?

  • 6 ounces of fish or chicken (size of your hand)
  • ¼ cup nuts (size of a golf ball)
  • Raw nuts & seeds
  • Spirulina
  • Protein powder
  • Sprouted grains (buckwheat, oats, quinoa, millet)
  • Dark leafy greens, mushrooms, peas, broccoli, brussels, peppers, yams
  • legumes

What’s a healthy fat?

  • Coconut oil
  • Cold pressed olive oil
  • Avocado oil or whole avocado
  • Macadamia nut oil
  • Grass fed ghee

The focus here is on whole, quality foods that optimize hormone health.

I love this topic because I used to suffer from migraines so I understand how debilitating they can be.

The good news is that they're coming from a root cause that we can address & heal so they go away!

Elevated blood sugar & insulin cause our immune system to produce excess inflammatory chemicals creating inflammation throughout the body.

Inflammation that goes unnoticed is a major root cause of pain in any part of your body, specifically migraines, ovulation pain and menstrual cramps.

What causes inflammation?

Eating problematic foods like refined carbs (white bread, pizza, bagels, desserts etc) and sugars triggers the same reaction inside your body as it does to your foot when you stub your toe on the table.

It’s a kind of inflammation you can’t see that happens in your brain, gut, joints, reproductive organs, and more.

If we continue eating inflammatory foods, the inflammation never gets a chance to heal so it starts to spread in your body like wild fire.

When it comes to cramps, migraines, period pain there’s something called Prostaglandins that come into play.

Insulin resistance and excess inflammation reduces the anti-inflammatory prostaglandins and increases the pro inflammatory Prostaglandins which we obviously don’t want.

When the Inflammatory prostaglandins are activated they trigger inflammation, pain and fever in the injured part of the body in an attempt to heal the damage area.

When there is bleeding involved, prostaglandins simulate the formation of blood clots and contract the muscles around the damaged area to prevent blood loss.

Women are at higher risk of developing a migraine or tension headache in the 2 days leading up to their period. And at the highest risk between days 1 and 3 of their period.

Prostaglandins are a major cause of migraines throughout the course of our entire cycle. PGE2 Prostaglandins increase significantly during a menstrual migraine.

Our BRAIN is fat. Our liver uses fat to produce cholesterol which is a building block for sex hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

It helps balance our blood sugar.

It’s anti inflammatory.

 

Women have 10% more body fat than men because WE GROW HUMANS. Our bodies are always trying to get pregnant & if you don’t have enough body fat, it’s not going to think you can properly nourish a fetus during pregnancy & sustain that baby once they’re born.

This is one of the main reasons I didn’t have a period for so long.
