How having PRE WORKOUT/COFFEE/CAFFEINE first thing in the morning affects your body:
This continuous increase in cortisol leads to BLOOD SUGAR IMBALANCES & DECREASES PROGESTERONE. [PROGESTERONE supports our metabolism, skin, hair, thyroid, ability to hold onto a pregnancy, regular periods & moods. Progesterone is easily DECREASES with POOR SLEEP & STRESS.]
REASONS to AVOID/REDUCE caffeine ESPECIALLY if you have PMS, are trying to conceive or have menstrual issues:

I cannot wait to dive into my philosophy and how important it is to really address the root cause rather than treating the symptom.
I always had an irregular period, I had IBS, facial hair, random rashes & migraines. I thought all of these problems were separate from each other & that my body was breaking down. I felt soooo confused.
I went to the gastroenterologist for my digestive problems & was offered a pill. I went to the gyno for my irregular/non existent period and was offered the birth control pill. I got blood work and everything was “normal”. I went to the neurologist for my migraines and everything was normal so I was given another pill for that.
Unfortunately none of the doctors connected the dots about what was actually going on and how all of those symptoms were connected to each other and coming from one root cause!
The most common root causes of imbalances that I address in MIND Your Hormones 101 are:

Today we're getting into the science & research around VITAMIN D3 & how it SIGNIFICANTLY reduces your chances of getting Covid 19. I can’t wait for you to dive into today’s episode about all things migraines! I used to suffer monthly from debilitating migraines so I totally understand what you’re going through! But it’s important to see where these migraines are coming from so we can address the root cause instead of putting a bandaid on the situation. NSAIDS taken for migraines cause inflammation in your gut leading to leaky gut. They can also suppress ovulation, make headaches worse & put a bandaid on the root issue.
Hormonal headaches are cyclical and mostly occur just before or after your period, or around ovulation due to the spike in estrogen which triggers ovulation. I recommend tracking your migraines to pinpoint what’s going on.

Today we're chatting all about "random" symptoms that could be signs of a HORMONAL IMBALANCE! Maybe you're not sure WHY you’re getting all these “RANDOM” symptoms? I used to feel the SAME WAY! I struggled with DIGESTIVE issues for YEARS! I would be so BLOATED after EVERY SINGLE thing I ate it would feel like I was 3️ months pregnant. I would go back and forth with CONSTIPATION and go DAYS without going to the bathroom! I also used to get severe MIGRAINES at least once a month. On top of that, I had more obvious hormonal imbalance symptoms such as an IRREGULAR period that turned into a NONEXISTENT period. But I had absolutely NO IDEA that my BLOATING, CONSTIPATION & MIGRAINES were coming from the SAME ROOT CAUSE that my IRREGULAR periods were coming from: A HORMONAL IMBALANCE. For me it was PCOS. For others it isn’t necessarily a syndrome like that, but rather an imbalance of specific hormones in the body. I talk to so many women who say to me, “I’m not sure if I’d be a good fit to work with you because I don’t know that I have hormonal imbalance. But I do have ACNE, I’m extremely FATIGUED, I have a lot of CRAVINGS, and I really CAN’T LOSE WEIGHT.” Those are CLASSIC hormone IMBALANCE SYMPTOMS. But when we go to our doctors with these issues, instead of identifying the CAUSE of these symptoms & recognizing they are ALL CONNECTED, they treat the SYMPTOM with MEDICATION. If you have ANY of the below symptoms, you need to consider the fact that it can be caused from a hormonal imbalance. Start looking at your body as a WHOLE instead of separated parts. Do you know the answers to these questions?: WHEN does it come? For HOW MANY days? What COLOR is it? Is it HEAVY? Is it LIGHT? Are there blood CLOTS? Is it CONSISTENT? Your period is your monthly REPORT CARD. It’s our 5th VITAL SIGN. A PHYSICAL sign of your INTERNAL & OVERALL health. I NEVER payed attention to my period because I had NO IDEA WHY it mattered! It wasn’t even something I consciously thought about it! If I got my period okay I got it. If I didn’t, I didn’t. I NEVER kept track of it. I NEVER thought I NEEDED to. I never knew ANYTHING about it because I was never TAUGHT anything about it! If we’re having IRREGULAR cycles, PAINFUL periods, HEAVY periods, NO PERIODS, etc. THAT’S our body’s way of TELLING US there’s an UNDERLYING issue that NEEDS to be UNCOVERED & ADDRESSED! The 1st step is PAYING ATTENTION to your period. STEPS TO TAKE GOING FORWARD:
IF I knew that OVULATING was CRUCIAL to my OVERALL HEALTH, METABOLISM, THYROID, BONES, SKIN, HAIR, STRESS RESPONSE, I would’ve paid more attention & given more WEIGHT to the fact that I wasn’t getting a period at all for 2 full years! It wasn’t a PRIORITY because I wasn’t trying to get pregnant. I had no idea that OVULATING was CRUCIAL for more than just pregnancy. I can’t wait for you to hear today’s conversation between me and Joelle Suess about how crucial it is to alter your work outs based off of our cycle phases.
Some quick information on Joelle:
My name is Joelle Suess (see-s) I have been in the health and fitness industry for 10 years. I studied dietetics in college, taught group fitness, personal trained clients, and then settled into the world of virtual health and fitness coaching. I am a mom of 2 boys and my husband and I are both born and raise Minnesotans! She is the host of the FEMININE FITNESS podcast. Here’s what we get into:
4 phases to our cycle: Follicular, Ovulatory, Luteal, Menstruation (check out Episode 5 for some more info on cycle phases)
1. Follicular 7-10 days: energy & hormones are rising. This is a great time to try something new and do workouts such as cardio, dance, running etc.
2. Ovulatory phase 3-5 days: energy & hormones are at their highest peak in this phase. You have energy to burn in this ohase so this is a great time to do more spin, HIIT workouts etc.
*NOTE: If you have a hormonal imbalance & are at the beginning of your journey, your body may not respond well to intense workouts in any phase of your cycle. Keep your exercises from 20-30 mins max and listen to your body. You should feel energetic after a workout NOT depleted.
3. Luteal 10-14 days long: The first 1/2 of this phase you may still have energy left over from Ovulation as it is slowly declining preparing for menstruation. Use the beginning part of this phase for slow strength training or intense yoga. Later in this phase scale back to lighter movements like walking, pilates, stretching, yoga etc.
4. Menstruation 3-7 days long: Your hormones are at their lowest concentrations so this is the time to REST. Especially the first few days of bleeding. Later on in the week you can incorporate walking, yin yoga, mat pilates.
Never prioritize waking up early to work out over sleep. SLEEP is more important.
Switching up your exercises and slowing down during your luteal & menstruation phase will help you LOSE WEIGHT and BALANCE YOUR HORMONES. WAYS WE CAN CONNECT!

If you've been with me for a while, you already know I have PCOS and ALWAYS had an irregular period that once turned into NO period for a full two YEARS. (Check out EPISODE 1 for my full hormonal journey) Thankfully, I changed my nutrition & lifestyle so I have been getting it regularly for the last 2.5 years! HOWEVER, my cycle is VERY SENSITIVE to intense stress & transitions which is why my period was 10 days late, causing me to not get a period in August. (10 days late might not seem like a huge deal to you if your period is all over the map like mine used to be. I GET IT! BUT, this is a sign from my body that things are starting to get out of balance. Taking action NOW will prevent the irregularities to continue.) Let's get on the same page: On August 3rd I formally resigned from my 9 year teaching career to work full time in my Nutrition Business. While it was the easiest decision in the sense that I 10000% knew this is what I wanted to do, it was EXTREMELY challenging to wrap my head around it and overcome the fear. For the months leading up to it, my mind was CONSTANTLY running about how scared & overwhelmed I was. This then affected my cortisol levels, routines & sleep patterns which caused my hormones to get jacked up. Here are the 3 steps I’m taking to get back on track

Today we are getting sassy and chatting about how to deal with other people’s reactions/opinions to your lifestyle change (or really to anything in life). I hope this episode empowers you to stand in your confidence and do what's best for YOU!
I cannot wait to hear what you think about today’s episode! It’s a sassy one for sure but one that was on my heart. I get asked about this a lot from my clients so I figured you might be experiencing some of the same feelings. So…how can you handle peoples reactions/thoughts when making a lifestyle change?! [I’m so Lucky to have amazing people around me.] When you care more about what you’re doing than you care about what they think then it doesn’t matter. When your why is deeper that’s all that matters. Why do other people care what I am or am not putting in my body? They’re not the ones that have to wake up in my body tomorrow. I do. And I know what feels good and what doesn’t. I’m not going to eat something that makes me feel like shit just because someone else has a problem with it. You eating or not eating, drinking or not drinking, doing or not doing something has absolutely 0 affect on anybody else. Other than it bringing up an insecurity that they might have. Most of the time when people are judging you, or making fun of you, it’s because it’s triggering something in them. That’s not your issue to overcome. That’s theres. It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them. If you want to change your lifestyle but you’re holding back or are nervous because you’re afraid of what someone else is going to think about it, you’re literally not improving your life because it’s going to make someone else uncomfortable. If you do that you’re never going to be fulfilled in life. You’re letting someone else run your life. Because how you do one thing is how you do everything. Because of how much I felt better and how much I was learning about it, I couldn't care less about what anyone else thought about it. I literally blocked it out and just focussed on what I was doing and why I was doing it. And if anyone made a comment I would just laugh it off with them and move on. It’s not always worth it to defend yourself because they might not be open to that conversation and you have nothing to prove. The message I want to give to you today is that if you are interested in making a lifestyle change, obvi you are if you’re listening to this, but you’re hesitating or feeling uncomfortable when you go out to eat or go places because other people might feel uncomfortable, please don’t let that stop you. If I let the opinions of other people stop me I wouldn't be where I am today.

I cannot wait to jam out on this topic with you! I love looking at the body as a WHOLE and all connected parts because that’s exactly how it is. It’s so empowering to know that we can improve our health & quality of life with way more than just nutrition. Our gut is directly connected to our brain via the vagus nerve. Because of that stress causes inflammation in our gut and when our gut is inflamed it causes stress. Things that inflame our gut: sugar, gluten, dairy, stress, environmental toxins, medications (antibiotics, hormonal birth control, Advil etc). This inflammation can lead to anxiety, depression & stress. Stress can cause constipation & bloating because of the vagus nerve connection.
TIPS TO IMPROVE DIGESTION & STRESS: 1. 3- 5 deep breaths before every meal to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system 2. Being present while eating & chewing thoroughly (not working through it, multi tasking, texting while watching tv etc) 3. Journal/breathe think about why you’re craving what you’re craving and if it's actually hunger or if it’s emotional 4. I cannot wait to jam out on this topic with you because it’s a game changer! Nutrition, movement & supplementation are critical to overall wellness, but they only take us so far. When we hyper focus on food & movement alone we end up ignoring a huge part of our being. I became a Holistic Nutritionist because I believe that everything is connected: our mind, body, emotions & spirit. That’s how I’ve approached my health & how I lead my clients. Our body needs more than just food & exercise to truly thrive. It also needs emotional & spiritual nourishment. When we IGNORE the emotional & spiritual parts of us that’s when: stress takes over, we feel disconnected, we feel a sense of lack, we feel scattered & drained, we feel low vibe because we’re draining our emotional & spiritual cup. We’re pretending they’re not there. Those feelings of lack & disconnection are a result of the lack of emotional & spiritual nourishment. (& probably old beliefs we need to rewrite). PLUS since our emotions are connected to our body, they can manifest into PHYSICAL symptoms. A lot of what we experience physically can be traced back to a repressed emotion. One of my favorite parts of MIND Your Hormones 101 (my group coaching program) is the emotional breakthroughs that happen on our calls. THAT’S when the real transformation happens. I can’t wait for you to dive into this episode because it’s super important! There’s more and more talk on intermittent fasting and all of it’s benefits which I’m not denying! BUT there isn’t enough of a conversation about how it can ALSO DISRUPT OUR HORMONES.
To start, it’s crucial to have times when we aren’t eating. When you eat around the clock your body stays in storage mode. If it’s constantly taking in food- it can never burn sugar & fat so we need to make sure we have certain points of fasting.
Extended periods without food tell the body that now isn’t a good time for reproduction. BUT you need to know that estrogen and progesterone do more in the body than just get us pregnant. Intermittent fasting can disrupt estrogen balance and mess up these essential physiological processes.
Intermittent fasting has been associated with numerous health benefits (improved insulin sensitivity, reduced body fat, cognitive function, lower risk of chronic health conditions) but it is also linked to hormone disruption. So if something you struggle with is getting in movement. Instead of waking up and being like eh I just don’t feel like doing it (there’s a diff between listening to your body & not having motivation to do it), if you adopt the identity of a person who moves their body daily in some way, you wouldn’t have that conversation in your head. So excited to chat with you about this because I want you to enjoy eating our without feeling anxious! The easiest cuisine’s I’ve found for being plant based when eating out are Mexican, Spanish, Italian & Asian. Mexican & Spanish are super conducive for those who are dairy & gluten free. You can get rice & beans, veggie tacos etc. Italian places have a lot of gluten free options: pastas or pizzas. There are also a lot of places that have vegan cheese options. Start looking at appetizers and sides to bulk up on veggies. Make sure you have some type of veggie before your meal especially if you’re eating animal products because animals don’t have fiber & fiber improves our gut microbiome. This also helps with portion control since the portion sizes at most restaurants is insane! Don’t be afraid to ask for accommodations! Speak up and ask for what you want. Just do your best and enjoy the experience! It’s not so much about the food it’s about enjoying the company that you’re there with. And if you eat something you don’t normally eat, don’t beat yourself up about it. Enjoy it & get back into your routine the next day!

I’m SO happy you’re here for today’s conversation because it is EXTREMELY important to know what’s normal & what isn’t. Our culture has made CRAMPS & period PAIN something that women should just “DEAL WITH” & “TOUGHEN UP” about because “that’s just what happens when you get your period.” This is SO MESSED UP on SO MANY levels. Not only does it MINIMIZE the STRUGGLE & PAIN that some women go through on a MONTHLY basis, but it NORMALIZES something that ISN’T NORMAL. This makes women IGNORE an underlying problem that could be serious (such as ENDOMETRIOSIS). Mild/moderate cramping can be “normal.” If they are MINOR cramps you can tolerate & don’t need to take any medication/pain relief for. BUT if you’re having INTENSE CRAMPS where you’re reaching for Midol or even more intense medications, you can’t get out of bed, or you’re getting nauseous from the pain, that is NOT NORMAL. Pain like that could be a SYMPTOM of ENDOMETRIOSIS which is an INFLAMMATORY disease that shouldn’t be taken lightly. THANKFULLY there are NATURAL ways to heal your Endometriosis & get rid of the pain.🙏🏼 One of my clients with endometriosis went from a 10 (on a scale of 1-10 of pain)to a 2! WITHOUT MEDICATION This shift happened from implementing an ANTI INFLAMMATORY diet & a supplement protocol for her specific needs. So THERE IS HOPE & there are NATURAL ways to accomplish this.

It's so important to include a Protein, Fiber & a HEALTHY Fat in each meal in order to balance blood sugar which helps balance hormones! Insulin regulates how much glucose or blood sugar actually gets into your cells. But when we are having poor eating habits or binging on tons of sugar, there's a problem. Insulin goes high but your cells eventually stop listening. This can also happen when you have inflammation. Even if your diet is perfect, inflammation can still occur and cause issues with insulin, which is especially a problem if you're really stressed. If your cells aren’t responding to insulin, they don't take in sugar, they don't function correctly, and your blood sugar goes high, leading to a whole lot of hormonal issues & diabetes. If you have insulin issues here are some symptoms you may experience. You're feeling shaky or anxious or irritable between meals. BLOOD WORK: You have a fasting blood sugar level greater than 85 mg/dL. You have difficulty avoiding things like chocolate, ice cream, potato chips or french fries. Are you craving sugar all the time? This might be a sign of blood sugar issues. If you already know you have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), your fasting insulin is greater than six, or you’re holding onto way more body fat than you should be then getting a complete metabolic blood test may be in order. PROTEIN, FIBER & FAT at every meal This is the key to blood sugar balance. It keeps you full longer and helps you maintain optimal levels of blood sugar. When it comes to fat, aim for about 1-2 tablespoons with each meal. This will also increase your libido. What’s an adequate amount of protein?

I love this topic because I used to suffer from migraines so I understand how debilitating they can be. The good news is that they're coming from a root cause that we can address & heal so they go away! Elevated blood sugar & insulin cause our immune system to produce excess inflammatory chemicals creating inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation that goes unnoticed is a major root cause of pain in any part of your body, specifically migraines, ovulation pain and menstrual cramps. What causes inflammation? Eating problematic foods like refined carbs (white bread, pizza, bagels, desserts etc) and sugars triggers the same reaction inside your body as it does to your foot when you stub your toe on the table. It’s a kind of inflammation you can’t see that happens in your brain, gut, joints, reproductive organs, and more. If we continue eating inflammatory foods, the inflammation never gets a chance to heal so it starts to spread in your body like wild fire. When it comes to cramps, migraines, period pain there’s something called Prostaglandins that come into play. Insulin resistance and excess inflammation reduces the anti-inflammatory prostaglandins and increases the pro inflammatory Prostaglandins which we obviously don’t want. When the Inflammatory prostaglandins are activated they trigger inflammation, pain and fever in the injured part of the body in an attempt to heal the damage area. When there is bleeding involved, prostaglandins simulate the formation of blood clots and contract the muscles around the damaged area to prevent blood loss. Women are at higher risk of developing a migraine or tension headache in the 2 days leading up to their period. And at the highest risk between days 1 and 3 of their period. Prostaglandins are a major cause of migraines throughout the course of our entire cycle. PGE2 Prostaglandins increase significantly during a menstrual migraine. I cannot wait for you to hear today’s episode all about FAT! It is such a huge misconception that fat makes you fat so we are debunking that! We literally NEED fat to live optimally. Our BRAIN is fat. Our liver uses fat to produce cholesterol which is a building block for sex hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. It helps balance our blood sugar. It nourishes our gut. It’s anti inflammatory.
Women have 10% more body fat than men because WE GROW HUMANS. Our bodies are always trying to get pregnant & if you don’t have enough body fat, it’s not going to think you can properly nourish a fetus during pregnancy & sustain that baby once they’re born. This is one of the main reasons I didn’t have a period for so long. IT WILL NOT MAKE YOU GAIN WEIGHT. Fat helps you feel satiated so you don’t over eat and it curbs cravings.
