Wow! This one was a good one for me. I just love everything about the Western States Endurance Run. The Golden Hour is probably the greatest hour in ultra-running because of so many things. All the winners a podium finishers are back to the track, sometimes 12 or more hours after their finish along with many spectators cheering on the runners in the final hour before the 30 hour cutoff. The energy is palpable! Jenn does not usually chase cutoffs. She's typically a sub 20 hour finisher for most of her 9 other 100 mile races, even with a win or two, but June 24/25 was just not her day for being fast. She had some issues that slowed her down but she got in under the wire and earned that buckle. She's gotten more attention from this from any previous victory. She is such a happy and positive person! I think you'll enjoy.

He's run many ultras already and is quickly becoming a seasoned vet. He's currently preparing for UTMB in which he got in first try as well. Enjoy my chat with Zach and his mom Ranna as they discuss the journey to States and beyond. He is such a mentally tough and determined athlete. I believe he will go far in the ultra world. LOL Pun intended.
13 Aug 2023 | Episode 55 - Aaron Hale | 01:53:37
Aaron Hale is one of the most inspirational humans I have ever spoken with. He lost his sight and eventually his hearing while serving our country doing Explosive Ordinance Disposal in Afghanistan. After healing up somewhat, he decided to take control of his life. Not sit around and be depressed with his circumstances. He took up running, climbed mountains, started an investment company, a fudge company, and the list goes on. Aaron just crushed the Badwater 135 back in July and he shares his story of the darkest day of his life literally, his comeback, setbacks and more comebacks. This guy is a real American hero and I was honored to chat with him. Check it out!
20 Aug 2023 | Episode 56 - Puke and Rally with Matt Clapper and Josh Sloan | 01:48:21
Matt Clapper is a really nice guy. A husband a father, friend. He came on my radar when I was following him and Mike Alberts during their Across Florida 200 adventure. They crushed it and set a course record. I had the opportunity to witness Matt absolutely crush The Trident Immolation 24 hour race. This is not your average 24 hour loop race. Out of 25 starters, 5 people finished and they were all warriors. Matt won by over an hour cumulative time. He stayed strong and consistent for the whole race and he will tell you he couldn't have done it without Josh Sloan, who gave a clinic on crewing a runner for a loop type race. I learned so much about race specific training and unlocking levels.
27 Aug 2023 | Episode 57 - Indefatigable - Taz Shepherd and her Badwater 135 crew (2/3) | 01:39:59
In this episode I talk to Taz Shepherd from Key West, Florida and 2/3 of her amazing crew. She completed her 1st ever Badwater 135 with the help of that crew including JD McGee and Mark Cudak. She also had Lisa Graft on her crew but she had to work and missed the recording of the podcast. We talk Taz's running history, getting selected for Badwater, training, selecting a crew, and execution of a great plan like a well-oiled machine. I really enjoyed and learned a lot.
01 Sep 2023 | Episode 58 - Remo Spagnol | 01:16:07
Remo Spagnol is an ultra-runner. He's completed 25 races 100 miles or more including I believe 3 - 200+ milers. He is an ultra-running coach with great experience and expertise in sweat testing technology and applying that to hot weather running. His record speaks for itself with quality finishes in some of the hottest races on the planet including Badwater and the Keys. Check it out and check out his coaching site.
07 Sep 2023 | Episode 59 - Mike McKnight | 01:01:57
Mike McKnight aka @thelowcarbrunner is a professional ultra runner and coach, a fellow squirrel, husband and father, and just an all-around good dude. He seems to excel in the longer races, like 200 mile plus. In this episode we discuss hi amazing comeback at Cocodona this year. Dude was 30+ miles and 8 hours behind the leaders when he got to Whiskey Row which is mile 80ish. I'll let him tell you what happened next. Good stuff. We also discuss Arizona trail FKT redemption, Leadville, etc. Check it out. Good stuff!
10 Sep 2023 | Episode 60 - Under Armour Trans Rockies Run | 01:32:52
In episode 60, we depart from the typical interview format to discuss an awesome stage race. It's the Under Armour Trans Rockies Run. I had the privilege to have my friends Amy and Lulu to cover the runner's and volunteer's perspective, and Houda and Aaron covered the race official's perspective as the President of the company and operations/RD. I was so excited about the race after our talk, that I registered within 10 minutes of signing off the meeting. It is 11 months away and already half full. If you want to join me, I have a discount code for $250 off!
18 Sep 2023 | Episode 61 - David Castro | 01:25:54
This is a feel - good comeback story in several ways. My friend David Castro dealt with mental health issues in his early adulthood like so many of us, and ended up homeless, unemployed, and unemployable. But with a perserverance that he didn't even know he had, David fought his way back to being a productive member of society and then took up ultra running. This year David was one of only 12 people to complete the Badwater Ultra Cup, completing all 3 Badwater races. This was also a comeback in itself after David had a DNF at BW 135 in 2022. Check out David's Project 368 on Youtube. See link below.

Please support these awesome races and race directors as well, and of course Squirrells Nut Butter.
22 Oct 2023 | Episode 65 - Run Fastah | 01:12:25
In this episode, I have decided to throw all of my podcasting and soliciting energy into making a pitch for our USA 24 hour world championship team. I interview super speedy ultra runner, Scott Traer, aka @runfastah. He is a member of the 24 hour team and has been very outspoken about the injustice of the athletes having to cover almost all their expenses at the world championships. In the first 15 minutes or so, I have a visit from coach Chris Twiggs to discuss his role in the 100 Miles With Marty Project and then jump right into the interview with Scott. I hope it makes you mad. Please help support these members of our ultra-running family! Sign the petition! Please tell everyone you know. Get them to sign and share. Let's show the world that the ultrarunning community can and will stand together! Links are below!
26 Oct 2023 | Episode 66 - Mandie Holmes | 01:27:22
In episode 66, I talk to another elite athlete from the west coast, Mandie Holmes. I met Mandie this year at the Squirrels Nut Butter tent at Western States. She was there for her 4th running of the most awesome 100 on the planet. She's a fellow Squirrel, a Rabbit Elite, and y'all know I am a huge Rabbit fan. She's also the 3rd member of the USA 24 hour world championship team that I have spoken to. Mandie has lots of great stories and has a wealth of knowledge about west coast ultras. Just an absolute joy to talk with. I hope you enjoy.
11 Nov 2023 | Don't Take the Deal With Don Reichelt | 01:32:18
Episode 67 features my chat with Don Reichelt. He is a world record holder with three different categories on the manually powered treadmill. 12 hours, 24 hours, and 100 miles. He's also a smart guy, witty, super-fast, and just a great conversation. We talk about all things ultra running and specifically the 100 mile and 24-hour disciplines. He's finished epic challenges like Cocodona 250, Leadman, Bighorn 100 and several others. I also chat with coach Dawn Lisenby about her client Kelley Lomax in the #100mileswithmarty project. I think you'll enjoy this episode. I actually edited it twice. (long story)
22 Nov 2023 | Episode 68 - Revolution Running's Kevin and Annie Randolph | 01:22:57
This episode features an awesome chat with 1/2 of Revolution Running, Kevin and Annie Randolph. Revolution Running are race directors of many different formats of races and different venues. They have a track timed race - The Stinger All Comers Track race, they have 5k's paved and trail all the way up to 100 miler trail with other distances in between. Kevin and Annie are really cool, down to earth people with an awesome community of loyal participants in their many races. They are also accomplished runners themselves. Annie is a cancer survivor and is not letting that interfere with her pursuit of her goals. I think you'll enjoy getting to know this amazing couple.
26 Nov 2023 | Episode 69 - Lauren Runs for Grilled Cheese | 01:39:53
Episode 69 features a chat with Lauren Jones from Atlanta, GA. She's a pediatric nurse anesthetist and a bada$$ ultrarunner. Lauren recently won the No Business 100 up in Tennessee and Kentucky. She also took 2nd at Cocodona 250 last year and 18th female at Western States this year. She is such a soft spoken person to be such a bada$$, and so fun to chat with! I think you'll enjoy!
02 Dec 2023 | Episode 70 - Weak Things Break with Gus Karagrozis | 01:21:16
Enjoy a summertime chat with New York's own Gus Karagrozis. As a newbie to the ultra-running scene, Gus showed up down at the very tough Immolation 24 hour race down in Jupiter, Florida in late July and came out of nowhere as the last seed to place second. He surprised everyone but himself and his coach. He's a fun guy to chat with as well as his partner and crew chief, Alanna. Hope you enjoy!
04 Dec 2023 | Episode 71 - Kelly O Rocks! | 01:32:01
Episode 71 features my conversation with Kelly Odell. She is the first guest that I've had on the show that actually lives with a previous guest. She's also the first guest on the show that would probably not win a 100 mile race against every other inhabitant of her home and especially a backyard format. LOL. With all that said, though, Kelly is quite the accomplished ultra-runner in her own right. She's finished Badwater 135 and several other 100 milers including a sub 24 hour. One of the reasons I invited her on the show was for a DNF though. She has an interesting DNF story for sure. Enjoy!
18 Dec 2023 | Back Yard Ultras Part 1 with Mike Melton | 01:29:09
This is the first of 4 episodes about the growing popularity of backyard ultras. I have a conversation with Mike Melton, owner of MCM Timing. He is not only the best race timer in the business, he has been involved in every single Big's Backyard Ultra. Big's was the original, and now there are over 400 backyard races in over 70 countries.
22 Dec 2023 | Epidsode 73 - Backyard Ultras part 2 with Laz | 01:04:09
Episode 73 was/is a big deal for me. The documentary, Barkleys, The Race that eats it's young, played a vital role in attracting me to ultra running. Gary Cantrell, aka Laz, became like a cult hero to me for coming up with such a challenging race where many years nobody finished. It took a couple more years before I figured out he had other races too. One in particular, Big's Backyard Ultra, is the main focus of this episode as we discuss the growing popularity of backyard format races, but we do cover other subjects. Gary is a recent inductee into the ultrarunning Hall of Fame. He is chock full of stories and statistics from past races. My only regret is that I couldn't get multiple hours to chat with him about all the things. You can bet I will be doing it again as soon as I come up with another good reason. Enjoy!
31 Dec 2023 | Episode 74 - Harvey Lewis and Jon Noll, Backyard Legends | 02:08:56
Top 2 Americans in Big's Backyard overall mileage, Jon Noll and Harvey Lewis join me to discuss their experiences at this year's race as well as others. Also, Jon goes into training, fueling, and strategies for BYU success. Really good stuff.
07 Jan 2024 | Episode 75 - Metpro - Nutrition for Performance, muscle, and weight loss | 00:51:17
Episode 75 is a little different from my normal routine. In this one, I ask coach Ryan Padilla of Metpro, who happens to be my nutrition coach, to come on and discuss how Metpro uses their vast experience in metabolic profiling to build custom nutrition plans for their clients to help achieve different goals. My goal was to lose excess weight to lower my impact running and improve performance. They help others that aren't looking to lose weight, just increase muscle, strength, and improve performance. They can do all 3. Ryan talks about how that works and gives many tips on pre-race fueling, in race fueling, and fueling for training. I have lost over 20 pounds with Ryan's help, but more than that, I have learned a lifestyle of eating smarter and looking at food as another tool to help me get closer to my goals. Check it out!
08 Jan 2024 | Episode 76 - Jennifer Russo, Backyard Ultra female world record holder | 01:21:22
Part 4 of the Backyard Ultra series features a chat with Jennifer Russo. At 57, Jennifer broke Courtney Dauwalter's backyard mileage female world record last year at Capitol Backyard Ultra getting the assist and earning a ticket to Big's. She has an impressive resume of 100 and 200 mile races in addition to some awesome Backyard performances. She was such a treat to get to know. She's also a race director. Enjoy!
11 Jan 2024 | Episode 77 - Britta Devitt - Spinal surgery to 100 miles in less than a year. | 01:21:15
Well friends, this is one of my favorite episodes because I love a feel good story. I cry a lot and I am teary typing this because just hearing Britta's voice and the gratitude that she shows by just being able to run inspires me big time. Check out her amazing story and let me know what you think. Best of luck to all you Long Haul runners. Hope to see you and high five you out there. Wait around to Sunday morning and hug me when I finish.
21 Jan 2024 | Episode 78 - Marc Burget - 2023 Daytona 100 winner | 01:25:07
Enjoy my chat with the winner of December's Daytona 100, Marc Burget. Marc is a cool dude from Jacksonville, Florida and part of the PRS Running Club, which is known for exceptional athletes. He has won races such as Keys 100 and Miami 50/50, he's a Disney nerd, and spends a lot of time there pacing their races as well as enjoying the parks. Also there's a brief recap of the Longhaul 100 and a #100mileswithmartyupdate
22 Jan 2024 | Episode 79 - Matt Clapper Backyard Ultras | 00:57:18
Join me and previous guest and good friend Matt Clapper. We discuss his awesome performance at Tampa Bay 100 with 2nd overall and then just a couple weeks later followed with a win at Last of the Felascans BYU. Matt is a huge fan of the BYU format. He's very passionate about running, racing, and training. So that makes for fun conversation. Check it out!
27 Jan 2024 | Episode 80 - Enchanted Objects with Patrick Gallagher | 01:43:47
"His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one." This is a line from The Great Gatsby. It was also an answer to one of the many questions I asked Patrick. As I told him in the interview, I can't believe I have waited this long to have him as a guest. He's a teacher of 27 years, a "retired" very accomplished ultra runner and coach, and he weaves great motivational sayings and literary quotes throughout his conversation. This makes for a really enjoyable and educational chat. While this is the final installment of my series on backyard ultras, we spend probably less than half the time discussing them. Patrick won the Death at Dupuis a few years ago and at the time his performance put him in a position to represent at Big's Backyard. So, we do discuss those experiences among many other races. We cover his 2 races that he directs, which are Gate 2 Gate and Last of the Felascans and he also shares some great tips for flatlanders looking to do well in mountain races. Check it out.
28 Jan 2024 | Episode 81 - John Parker Runs | 01:22:11
Get to know speedy and tough runner John Parker. His wins are all on really challenging terrain and conditions, so that speaks a lot about his strengths. I think one of the reasons I love the Florida Ultra Running community is that even though they lack elevation for the most part, they find other ways to make it challenging. I love that. Give it a listen!
01 Feb 2024 | Episode 82 - Sam Atherton conquers! | 01:45:28
Join me for a nice chat with fairly new ultrarunner Sam Atherton from Nashville. Back on January 20th, less than a year after his first ultra he toed the line at "The Conquer" which proclaimed by it's RD's as "America's Toughest Ultra". There was a $10,000 cash prize and let's just say he conquered. Sam is a passionate guy about running community and training, so he was a treat to talk to. I think you'll enjoy that and his race recap.
18 Feb 2024 | Episode 83 - Teri Swanson and crew | 01:39:34
Terri Swanson has completed many marathons, but until recently, never really considered a 100 mile ultra. That is, until she was challenged by the legend, Bob Becker, and she accepted. Terri took on the Daytona 100 ultra. She had an awesome crew, although she didn't know them very well, and she got it done. Here's their story.
22 Feb 2024 | Episode 84 - Bart Yasso | 01:28:29
Enjoy my chat with the mayor of running, Bart Yasso. This position is not elected or self-appointed. It is a term of endearment earned with great admiration and respect of many legends in the sport of running. Bart is the retired chief running officer at Runners World magazine, back when magazines were still a thing. He's run races all around the world on behalf of Runners World and has hundreds of cool stories from it. I have the honor of sharing some of those with you. Enjoy!
04 Mar 2024 | Episode 85 - Whitney Dancaster | 01:50:15
Episode 85 is dedicated to the memory of Laken Hope Riley, a nursing student that was brutally murdered while out on a run on February 22. Please be vigilant when running alone! It (the episode) features my chat with my Florida friend, Whitney Dancaster. She's a social media influencer, a badass ultra-runner, and an all-around humble and kind soul. It was a real pleasure to get to know her better and talk running and races. I hope you enjoy.
10 Mar 2024 | Episode 86 - Donna 110 Ultra | 01:29:21
Join me for a recap of the Donna 110 Ultra with male and female winners Charlie Poblenz and Jamie Saunders. Both pf these folks are super kind and humble humans and just a joy to talk to. Also The Donna Foundation is an awesome organization that has made a tremendous impact in the Jacksonville community. I hope and pray this episode will inspire some of you to join me there as runner, crew, or volunteer there next year!
16 Mar 2024 | Episode 87 - Embrace the Pain, Manifest Victory! The 100 miles with Marty project update. | 01:14:25

Andrea Mehner is an astronomer of German descent living in Chile. She, of course is also a badass ultrarunner. Join me as I learn her story of growing up on the wrong side of the Berlin wall, witnessing first-hand the wall coming down as a child and then becoming the awesome human that she is today. She is fairly new to the backyard format but has a great future with her base of mental toughness and fitness. Hope you enjoy!
31 Mar 2024 | Episode 89 - Chris Stayman | 01:40:38
Join me for a chat with Chris Stayman from Tennessee. He recently won the Pistol Ultra 100 mile race and set the Tennessee 100 mile record. He's a super cool dude and I think you'll enjoy his story. Check it out.
05 Apr 2024 | Episode 90 - Fixing Feet with Tonya Olson | 01:56:19
Tonya Olson literally wrote the book on fixing feet! At least she co-wrote it with her friend and mentor, Jon Vonhoff. If you're an ultra runner, you have probably had problems with losing toenails, blisters, and maceration. I know you are tough and all, but just one of these things in the wrong spot at the wrong time could end your race. And what if it's a race that took you 5 years to get into, or one you spent $8000 on getting you and your crew there?
18 Apr 2024 | Episode 91 - Howie Stern | 01:48:38
Howie Stern is an extremely talented race photographer, an accomplished ultra-runner, and just an all-around passionate, genuine dude that is a huge fan of our sport. I had the honor to discuss many things he has done and witnessed over the years including most recently capturing the iconic shot of one of the greatest moments in ultra-running sports history. If you like passionate people and ultra running and the mountains, you will love Howie. Enjoy.
21 Apr 2024 | Episode 92 - Austin Brennan | 01:25:04
Back in March I took a field trip down to South Florida for the Hungryland 100, not to run it, but to do my thing, cook, cheer, hug, eat, hang out, and to grow my circle of ultra-running community family.
24 Apr 2024 | Episode 93 - Flipping the Script with a Chief Ladiga 100 recap | 01:35:35
This one makes me a little uncomfortable. For someone who talks as much as me, it's weird, but I don't like to hear myself talk so much. In this episode, 2/3 of my Chief Ladiga 100 crew, and dear friends, Jamie Saunders and Tina Wolfe interview me for a recap of my last race. If you don't like to hear me talk about me, I am perfectly ok if you pass this one by. The interviewers do a fine job. The guest is a little boring. Maybe it will keep you company in some late miles at Bronze Dragonfly or another race. Enjoy!
26 Apr 2024 | Episode - 94 - Ladies' Ultra-running Round Table | 01:39:34
Three badass women of ultra form an experts panel and discuss issues that females deal with at ultramarathons, physically and emotionally. Amy Bukszpan, Lulu Yun Pelz, and Melinda Hooper join me for a nice chat. This turned out to be an eye-opening thing for me. If you know me, you know I am all about this awesome community we have, and growing it, not turning people off. So some of the simple things discussed in how we treat each other can make a difference, also some of the information helps us as men understand that ladies have some challenges that we don't have to face. It says female issues, but I promise it is worthy of a listen to the male runners out there to learn how to be more inclusive and respectful.
05 May 2024 | Episode 95 - Gene Dykes aka The Ultra Geezer | 01:13:27
Gene Dykes is 76 years old and holds many world records in the Masters and 70+ age groups across a broad range of distances. He's got tons of great stories and some interesting takes on fueling and electrolytes. Hope you enjoy!
08 May 2024 | Episode 96 - Nicole And dogs | 01:50:28
I first encountered Nicole Armbruster on the many out and backs of Long Haul 100 this past January with her unicorn hat and genuine smile, and then a few weeks later at Hungryland 100 where she took 2nd female. She also just won first female at the inaugural SkunkApe 100 a few weeks ago. She is such a passionate and happy runner with an interesting story and just a treat to talk to. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I know a lot of us are probably busy obsessing on the Cocodona 250 livestream, I know I am, but it will be over this weekend. Also please support the #walkwithwhit fundraiser for the little girl battling liver cancer.
16 May 2024 | Episode 97 - 100 Miles With Marty Project Finale | 01:36:11
Wow! And just like that the 100 miles with Marty project has come to an end. What an incredible experience it has been for me to witness the journey of three smart, courageous, adventurous, young ladies as they trained their way into being 100 mile ultra finishers! Buckle up! I know their lives will be forever changed by the experience and maybe some physical scars as well, lol, but I feel like I reaped more benefits than they did. I mean, I drew so much inspiration and life lessons from meeting Kelley, Kassy, and Amber and seeing their transformation. Being a 100 mile ultra finisher just gives you a sense of internal strength and confidence that is undeniable. I hope you, the listener, enjoyed their journey as much as me. I present to you the post-race interviews with the runners and their crews. Please give these ladies and their awesome supporters some love for their accomplishments!
31 May 2024 | Episode 98 - Elsa Jaworski | 01:27:29
Elsa Jaworski is such a joy to talk to! She is not interested in being the fastest. She wants running to be fun and bring joy and she does an excellent job at it. She ends up doing pretty well at the fast thing along the way. She had a 2nd place finish at Tahoe 200 last year and top 10 at Cocodona this year. She's got lots of interesting goals in the future, one of which several of my friends have done or are currently planning to do as well. Across Florida 200. She's also a Georgia Bulldog and that's pretty awesome! Give it a listen. I think you will instantly become a fan of Elsa!
05 Jun 2024 | Episode 99 - Running with Simon | 01:44:05
Simon Guerard is an experienced ultra runner with around 40 -100 milers or longer under his belt. He started filming his race experiences at some point and has started a YouTube channel called Running with Simon. He does an awesome job recapping races, giving tips, and reviewing the equipment that he uses. He's not biased by corporate sponsors, so his tips come from a neutral viewpoint. He has a great sense of humor. His movies make you smile. I think listening to his story will make you smile. Check it out. Give his YouTube and IG a follow. I think you'll enjoy.
07 Jun 2024 | Episode 100!!! - Rachel Entrekin | 02:21:12
Episode 100 is here! Thank you so much to the listeners and supporters! Be sure to listen at the beginning for an opportunity to win lots of cool swag such as race entries, t-shirts, and product. I had no idea who I could get to be "the perfect guest" for episode 100. I figured I would just keep talking to awesome humans and the answer would come. Well, that is exactly what happened. First off, she has won her last 11 races. Mostly 100 milers, with a 100k and a 250 miler which was Cocodona last month. So, to say she is a badass ultra runner is an understatement. She was so passionate that her part literally required no editing. I think you will smile a lot as you hear her story. If you or someone you know is a series ultra related corporate sponsor prospect for her, please give this a listen and or share it. Thanks again for your support! Important links below. |
