We're not fans of music companies/labels in the KPop industry as a whole, but we've got BEEF with Starship Entertainment and their management decisions for Monsta X. Now that 5 out of the 6 members of Monsta X have re-signed with Starship Entertainment, their fate within the company is sealed. And although I.M chose to leave the company and chart his path as a solo artist elsewhere, he will remain part of the group as many other idols have chosen to do before. This episode is unlike any we've done before, as we call out many of the recent missteps by Starship, and we didn't mince our words. "YoUr DoG sPeAkS cHiNeSe?!" If you've come across this meme, you know Eric Nam. If you haven't, it's time to get to know him. Eric Nam is a staple of Korean entertainment, and in our eyes, he's also the Prince of Atlanta. Born and raised there, he took a chance on his talent and Korean execs jumped at the opportunity to have him. While he mainly sought to pursue music, he found another exciting skill in the process: show MC/host. His prowess as an interviewer is practically unmatched and his bilingual wit is seriously admirable. With the onset of the pandemic back in 2020, Eric took things a step further in his career by founding and managing multiple ventures with his two younger brothers that massively increased their reach and engage with the fans in every possible way. He took making lemonade out of lemons to the next level, and that's how we got to know and love him. That's daebak! When we heard Eric was going on tour and would be having a concert in South Florida, we knew we had to be there. After all, KPop or Korean entertainers don't make their way down here often so even if we didn't know his music portfolio in detail, we knew it would be a fun experience to see him live. To our surprise, Eric's music was equally captivating and now we officially consider ourselves members of #NamNation, and we're here to spread the gospel of this Namtastical man. On April 11 1992, Seo Taiji and Boys debuted their single "Nan Arayo" on a music show, and the rest is history. Now we're on the 4th generation of idol groups and things are going more and more global with each passing day. Their debut song “Nan Arayo” ("I Know") premiered on a talent show on April 11, 1992 which is why we consider this date the birth of K-Pop. Any other Latinos in the house, make some noiseeeee! Growing up in a Hispanic household in South America, we were always exposed to English/American influences, which at the time we were praised for and it was definitely the cool thing to do. Now that we're into KPop, though, our families and friends aren't as into it. "But you don't understand the language!" - we didn't either when we first started listening to music in English "Those are men? They look like women!" - yes. South Korea has different beauty standards, and male idols wear as much makeup as female idols do (which we're not mad to see some level of equality there) "You're fan-girling over boy bands and girl groups... in your 30s?!" - first of all, rude. Second of all, yes. Hell yes. We found a segment of music and entertainment that was new to us, is always exciting, and provides new content CONSTANTLY. What's not to love? In other words, our journey into KPop hasn't been something that is immediately understood or welcomed in our existing circles, but that's exactly why we started MIA2K. Also, we know we're not alone. There are TONS of South Florida and Latin American KPop fans, because people with good taste are everywhere, and that's just a fact. If you're feeling alone in your KPop journey, you're not! We're here for you, and whether your first language is Spanish, English, or Korean, good music is always going to be good music. We decided to start this podcast because we don’t have much hope of our favorites making their way down to SoFLo and it’s getting expensive to travel around the country to see them. This means it's now up to us to rally the troops and get everyone we know to become K-stans along with us!
All jokes aside, we saw a gap in the Korean Entertainment Commentary space, so we’re here to bring our unique perspective with a side of “So Miami.” We're making things easy peasy lemon squeezy for you with bite-sized episodes where we share our learnings of all the things you need to know in order to enjoy your experience as a fan to the fullest!
Disclaimer: we both have hispanic backgrounds and have lived in the US for most of our lives. We've always been exposed to and celebrated the vast diversity we see around us at home or on our travels. We consider ourselves welcoming of and interested in all cultures and people, and we’re just really enjoying sharing our newfound knowledge with those around us. As Westerners, we’re not here to appropriate or be KBoos, but rather discuss and appreciate the key aspects that make this current KExplosion so fun and refreshing for us all on this side of the world.
