13 Aug 2024A Star Is (Re)born - Victor Robles Extended! Meet at the Mitt Podcast01:31:51
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Zach Mason, John Trupin and Kate Preusser are here on Monday August 12th to celebrate the extension of Victor Robles! A generation removed from Jerry low balling Jarred Kelenic on a long term extension, the Mariners finally have their Robin (to Julio’s Batman) in Right Field. Who is up for an extension next and why is it Cal? Can we keep both Logan and Kirby? Sure Robles is fun now, but what can we expect going forward? Have the outfield vibes ever been so decadent? https://mybookie.website/MeetAtTheMitt TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/MeetattheMitt https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio https://twitter.com/AndersJorstad https://twitter.com/RealZachMason https://macdougallbats.com/ We are partnering with MY BOOKIE to give you an extra 50% on your first deposit! 14 Apr 2023Jarred Ascending - Is This The Breakout We've Been Waiting For? Meet at the Mitt Podcast00:57:47
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Anders Jorstad, Zach Mason and Evan James are here for Meet at the Mitt on an auspicious Thursday afternoon/ The Mariners won the final game of the 3-3 road trip to roll back into Seattle at 5-8. There have been highs and deep, profound lows in the seasons first two weeks, but some bright spots are there to be found. Zach breaks down Jarred’s monster success over the season’s first few weeks, capping it off with some highlight reel home runs in the Chicago series. Anders preaches patience as Kolten Wong sorts himself at the plate and Dylan Moore slowly ramps up to speed. Evan reminds us all that 13 games is just far enough into the season for opinions to gel, but not late enough to fully crystalize. Everyone collectively shares a little jealousy over the wild start of the Tampa Bay Rays. Lastly we take stock of where the team is and where hopefully it might be headed. 11 Oct 2022Lookout Landing Podcast 206: American League Division Series Preview01:14:14
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! On this episode Kate Preusser, Zach Gottschalk and Jacob Parr are here to look forward to the American League Division Series against (who else but the Seattle Mariners most hated and dangerous rival) The Houston Astros. Yes indeed, if the Mariners intend to reach the mountain top they first have a dragon to slay. From a narrative perspective this feels like it was inevitable; You can’t be the best if you can’t beat the best and make no mistake, the Astros have (despite the cheating) been the best. Kate brings up a great point, that after the sour post season exit last season, it feels like the Astros are fighting for how legitimately their legacy will be remembered. The Mariners on the other hand find themselves in the comfortable role of underdog ready to take on the world. The crew breaks down the Houston lineup and rotation the Mariners are set to face and assesses our chances and advantages at each position. Lastly everyone picks series awards for the victorious Mariners, and predicts the series outcome.   TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio Learn more about your ad choices. Hello Seattle Mariners fans! John Trupin ,Kate Preusser and Evan James are here for Meet at the Mitt episode 24 on June 14th. The team is back to .500 after winning their first series of the season against a “good” team in the Miami Marlins. Furthermore, the team wRC+ has slid comfortably into league average at a flat 100. Who could be traded off to help the cause? Who could be traded for? Is Mike Ford the answer at DH? Is Caballero the answer at 2B? Will regression strike the pitching staff? 20 Dec 2021LockedOut Landing Podcast 177: Santa's Mailbag01:24:44
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! It has, once again, been incredibly quiet on the baseball front. As the holidays rapidly approach, the general consensus is that baseball is shut down for 2021, and negotiations on a new agreement between the league and players association won't be taking place until at least January. That, sucks. In the meantime, to counter the dreaded silence across the sport, we are here with Santa’s grab bag full of reader questions to bring the hard hitting knowledge straight to your dome piece. Assorted Musings: ·     Mariner gifts for Christmas ·     CBA Negotiations ·     The most depressing Mariners trivia of all time ·     Cal Raleigh, stud? ·     What to do with Evan White? ·     Who is the oldest tenured Mariners prospect? ·     Witty banter Learn more about your ad choices. 19 Mar 2020Lookout Landing Podcast 106: Please welcome Michael Ajeto!01:06:44
0:00-21:55: Podcasting in the age of ‘roni. We’re talking to Michael Ajeto, newest hire at Lookout Landing, about his debut article for the site. Mikey wrote about Justus Sheffield, who was making some changes in Spring Training before they shut down the whole operation. Listen to Mikey break down why Sheffield’s fastball has struggled, what spin rate has to do with it, and how he’s trying to work around these issues. 22:00-42:15: Moving forward (whenever the heck that is), what will it take for Sheffield to be a legitimate MLB starting pitcher? With so much data at our fingertips now, what are good ways to actually evaluate pitchers? Who are some of our favorite pitchers to watch (hypothetically speaking, of course)? The boys reminisce over Mike Leake’s almost perfect game. 42:20-46:55: What stood out in the tiny amount of Spring Training action we saw? Matthew praises the concept of longform content, especially during a time when people are in desperate need of entertainment. 47:00-1:04:00 Mikey walks us through his journey as a Mariners fan. This 2001 game against the Giants gets its first shine on the podcast. When did we realize that nobody has any idea when sports are coming back? Stay strong and stay safe, everyone. 31 Jul 2021Lookout Landing Podcast 165: Red Deadline Redemption?01:48:15
The Mariners roared into the deadline fronting a big game and came out with mostly a swap of relief pitchers, and a good infield prospect, but not the marquee name fans had hoped for. We dive into the return for Kendall Graveman and discuss our evolving feeling about what was a very contentious trade for the team. We reflect on the Mariners clutchness. so far and ponder whether or not it can survive such a drastic cultural shift. However, we also examine Graveman's role on the team, and conclude, as we did several weeks earlier, that he was always expendable given where he stood on the roster. We also briefly touch on the Mariners trade with Tampa Bay for Diego Castillo, whom we all like a great deal. We also wonder what on earth the Astros see in Montero, and are concerned the Rays will turn Austin Shenton into a bonafide star (if he can find a position). We touch on new Mariners president of business operations Kate Griggs and express excitement at her role within the organization. We conclude with a look at the wider trade environment in baseball, and why perhaps the Mariner chose to make the moves that they did, given the prices on the trade market. Apologies for the sound on this one, John's audio is a bit skippy here and there, and I smoothed it over as best I could, but its not perfect. Learn more about your ad choices. 12 Nov 2021Lookout Landing Podcast 174: Typical Butt Scuttling01:10:27
Hello everyone! We are back! After a slow couple of weeks for the Seattle Mariners, the MLB season has wrapped with the Atlanta Braves defeating the notorious cheaters and karma recipient Houston Astros. After a quiet few days, the calm before the storm has begun to dissipate as the hot stove cranks up. Kate is in Arizona scouting the fall league this month, so we have prospect guru and baseball maverick Joe Doyle here to dig into the slowly heating hot stove. Jerry has been running the press circuit over the past few weeks name dropping free agents and players of interest, and we look at the who and the how much when it comes to those potential players. We talk who the Mariners might be looking at on both shorter and longer deals. We say goodbye to Yusei and ponder who might take his spot in the rotation (Sheffield? Dunn? Paxton? Matt Brash?). We talk Bryan Reynolds, former and potential future Mariners trade target. We spend a fair amount of time breaking down the outfield situation, and we each see a variety of possible scenarios moving forward depending on whom the Mariners import in the coming weeks. We talk Matt Brash, Kyle Lewis, Evan White and other guys who could be on the team out of camp but likely need a brief minor league stint for one reason or another. Lastly Evan gets philosophical on the nature of success, failure, and baseball prospects. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
30 Sep 2021Lookout Landing Podcast 170: The Hunt for Teal October01:37:33
Hello everyone! We are back under incredible circumstances. John has fixed his microphone, the Mariners are a half game out of the playoffs, Chris Pratt is Mario, Dr. Dre is doing the super bowl halftime show, and I feel like my brain is literally melting under the weight of adulation and deep confusion. Anyways, the Seattle Mariners are half a game back in the wild card after grinding the pitiful Oakland Athletics underneath their heel for what feels like the 47th time this season. With only one series remaining against the rival Angels, the team looks to crank up the fun differential for one last ride that will catapult them into the postseason. Naturally, this is perhaps the most fun podcast of the year, as we’ve all felt the enthusiasm around the team rise to the occasion in dramatic fashion. The team appears to be selling tickets to the final home stand rapidly, and Lookout Landing will be there to represent in epic fashion. After a long, dark playoff drought, no matter what the outcome, this has been an unexpected and wondrous few weeks for fans, and we have much to dig into as the final bend approaches. Assorted topics ·     Milli Vanilli ·     Are the Oakland As cooked? ·     Is Matt Chapman cooked? ·     Are front office changes in store for Oakland? ·     How dangerous are the Angels and Astros next year and beyond ·     Kate & Evan playoff memories ·     When did the Mariners become this new entity we all love? ·     Who pitches for the Mariners in a one game playoff? ·     Jarred’s thick thighs & Cal Raleigh dumper appreciation ·     Team MVP JP Clutchford ·     Sean Doolittle: good? ·     Remember Daniel Zamora? 11 Jul 2022Lookout Landing Podcast 194: Farm To Table Setters01:16:57
Hello Seattle Mariners faithful! What an absolute roller coaster ride of a week it has been. The Mariners have rocketed back into contention with an 8 game win streak and taking 16 of their last 19. After a May that was so dreary most of us had largely written the team off, they find themselves rolling into the All Star break with their lone representative, a rookie on a 6 win pace, and comfortably sitting in wild card position. Isabelle Minasian joins Evan, Kate and John to dig into the new, good Mariners. Collectively the crew stands in amazement of the turnaround the Mariners have conjured, while acknowledging works remains to be done. Isabelle assets that now is a key time to spend and invest in the team, especially since they have thrust themselves back into contention and she advocates for Toro to get the lions share of playing time at second base for the next few weeks to see if he can’t catch fire and ignite his way into a trade. Kate and Evan look at some potential replacements for Frazier in the infield and coverage for Kirby’s future innings in the rotation. Lastly, we collectively marvel at the good fortune that has rolled the Mariners way after a dreadful first quarter of the season. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish, and the Mariners are looking to finish strong. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Kate Preusser, Evan James, Zach Mason and John Trupin are here to talk playoff baseball on August 20th 2023 for Meet at the Mitt episode 43. The team has swept the pitiful, overrated Houston Astros into oblivion by dealing them four brutal loses at home. The Mariners emerge from the desert with the hottest team in baseball fronted by the hottest player on the planet. Wins and Julio, a perfect combination. What’s not to love? With .500 baseball firmly in the rearview the Mariners sights are fully trained ahead and looking towards the playoffs. 07 May 2020Lookout Landing Podcast 113: Emily Nemens on her new book, The Cactus League00:59:50
0:00-23:00: Emily Nemens, author of the recently-released book The Cactus League, graces the hallowed air waves of the Lookout Landing podcast. Emily grew up in Seattle as a Mariners fan, but also a fan of baseball in general, which led to the publication of this book! As book tours are illegal right now, we try to replicate that through the power of podcasting. Our conversation starts with a general conversation about the book and the characters involved before delving into some of the process behind it. She also shares a story of her real life experiences at Spring Training, featuring none other than George Steinbrenner. 23:05-34:35: Was there any moment in particular that made Emily want to write a baseball book? What sort of memory association will come with releasing a book during a global pandemic? What was the hardest part of writing The Cactus League? 34:40-56:50: Emily reads an excerpt from the book, which details an on-the-field moment between a pitcher and catcher. We end our conversation by talking about, what else, the Mariners. Like several past guests, Emily has left Seattle and had to adjust her fandom to the eastern time zone. How has the Mariners being bad re-shaped her brain, and does she think it affected the book at all? 06 Aug 2020Lookout Landing Podcast 122: Reading Some Mariner Headlines01:15:06
0:00-27:20: Matthew is back from some extreme chillin’ in Idaho and is now Idahosting this podcast again, restoring balance in the universe. While Matthew was gone, the Mariners played roughly 10 percent of the season, so he’s got some catching up to do! We’ve gathered some headlines from that period, and it’s up to John and Kate to fill him in on what happened. After getting updates on Kyle Lewis, we start talking neck. Then it’s on to Joey Gerber and his first MLB game against a man who debuted before his fourth birthday. 27:25-39:50: A direct plea to Rob Manfred and an appreciation of Rebelution, a band that J.P. Crawford apparently loves? Our last headline centers on Yusei Kikuchi and his recent masterful performance against Oakland. 39:55-1:11:06: Time for listener questions! Which player does Kate already anoint as a dark horse MVP candidate? Is there any chance for trades during this loopy, hard to figure season? The only thing that derails our intellectual, stimulating conversation is the news that Kyle Seager’s middle name is DUERR. As per usual, the conversation steers toward Dylan Moore’s confounding ass, DMX quotes, and Puerto Rican hip power. Music: “Still D.R.E.” by Dr. Dre feat. Hello Seattle Mariners fans! The team is off for the All Star week after tearing through the league en route to a 14 game win streak. John Trupin, Evan James and Isabelle Minasian convene to discuss Julio’s legendary performance at the 2022 home run derby. We collectively marvel at how the 2022 MLB All Star Game and home run derby have felt like both an American awakening to Julio, but also his birth as an international star. We hand out first half grades for the team across various topics like MVP (duh), most surprising vs disappointing, and flowers for the pitching staff. We collectively marvel at Ty France and JP, who have already assumed the roles of quietly excellent veterans amongst a very young squad. We look ahead at the future and make some bold predictions about where the Mariners might find themselves in October. 04 May 2021Lookout Landing Podcast 158: “Why I’m a Mariners Fan” with hip-hop producer Jake One01:18:32
It’s a banner episode for the show, as Seattle hip-hop legend Jake One aka Flamie Moyer blesses the mic. Jake usually makes his bones on the production side, which means he can still do his job from home. Which old white man sport (other than baseball) has he leaned into during the pandemic? When it comes time to talk about the Mariners, Jake takes us back to his favorite Kingdome memories from his summers in the ‘80s. Mike Schooler and Phil Bradley, stand up. When his career started to take off in the early 2000s, how did Jake’s baseball fandom evolve? One thing that took his career to a new level was making John Cena’s entrance music. Has he ever thought about making a walkup song for a ball player? Baseball and hip-hop aren’t exactly a natural marriage. How do we get baseball on the same level of mainstream coolness as basketball or football? Is it even possible? Which rapper that Jake has worked with is the biggest baseball fan? Which one faked it all the way to an MLB Network appearance? Jake shouts out a Dave Magadan name drop in an early Fat Joe track, leading Matthew to list some of his favorite baseball bars. Finally, let us praise the man, the myth, the legend: Rick the Peanut Guy. 17 Sep 2020Lookout Landing Podcast 130: “Why I’m a Mariners Fan” with Hanna Brooks Olsen01:17:00
0:00-21:00: Hanna Brooks Olsen is here, just in time for plumes of ash to block out the sun and end humanity once and for all! As an Oregon resident, where does Hanna find the Mariners in the Oregon sports hierarchy? Hanna grew up in a household with dueling fandoms, which led to her grandfather’s ashes being scattered at a division rival’s field. After a brief rundown of the perceived itchiest player in Major League Baseball, we find out how Hanna fell hopelessly in love with baseball, which will always hit different on the radio. 21:05-45:20: Everyone’s got a beloved Mariner who wasn’t good at baseball. Hanna’s is a recently departed, perennially thicc middle reliever. During this segment, the concept of time takes Matthew behind the woodshed and absolutely beats him senseless. As Mariner fans, we have a protective turtle shell that shields us from danger but also allows us to hide in our own comforting isolation. Toomgis, Larry King, juggalos, and a Pioneer Square bar with carpeted tables also come up. 45:25-56:55: The Mariners, this year’s Mariners, aren’t a complete embarrassment! Thoughts? Feelings? We know we’re in a weird zone when Kyle Seager has a beard. Matthew and Hanna then talk about those moments where another person is confronted by the reality of how much you care about the Mariners. One more important announcement from this part of the show: Coors Light is good. 57:00-1:13:00: Asking Hanna about her favorite Mariner ever, the time she saw Daniel Vogelbach crushing chicken wings on Aurora, and Dave Niehaus’ death. 04 Apr 2024April Cold Showers - Are the Strikeouts Real? Meet at the Mitt Podcast01:12:47
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Zach Mason, Evan James and here with Kate Preusser on April 3rd to dissect the early returns of the 3-4 Mariners. A forgettable day on offense, defense and from stalwart George Kirby renders discussion of the immediate unpalatable, so the crew takes a more holistic view. What do we make of the early strikeout issues? Are these ghosts of 2022 coming home to roost or a whole new strain? Will Luis Urias or Dom Canzone shake out of their deep funk? But most important of all, what has gone right so far that we can feel good about? The answers: Julio walk-off wins, Bryce Miller’s new pitch and the specific role of Josh Rojas (current Mariners ERA leader). Shout out to our sponsor MacDougall bats! 20 Feb 2024Which Mariner Will Surprise This Spring? Meet at the Mitt Podcast01:16:17
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Evan James, Anders Jorstad and Zach Mason are here on Monday February 18th to talk spring baseball as the Mariners arrive in Peoria. While much of the team is settled with starters healthy and entrenched in the lineup, there are battles for roster spots yet to be won. How does the bullpen shake out? Is Levi Stoudt a lock to make the team? Is Austin Voth actually going to be a swingman even though Scott historically eschews the archetype? Is Taylor Trammell a dark horse in the outfield? How will the platoons ultimately shake out in terms of playing time? The market for some high profile free agents remains cold; could the Mariners be back in the Chapman mix? Why do we already have our eyes on the trade deadline? Hope springs eternal because baseball is back. Shout out to our sponsor MacDougall bats! Editor's note: Ander's mic is busted and getting high end feedback/buzzing. I've cleaned it up extensively, but that's why his vocal is a bit on the thin side. 19 Feb 2023PECOTA Pessimism - How Will The Mariners Beat The Projections? Lookout Landing Podcast01:19:04
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Kate, Evan and John are here to bask in the early glow of spring training. Pitchers, catchers, coaches, Jerry, the gang is all out in Peoria warming up for the much anticipated sequel to the highly rated, award winning 2022 season. First Kate expresses her concerns over the fate of many in The Last Of Us, but she will find no solace nor reprieve in the fates of those entwined. Once the Mariners eventually come up, topics from Twitter like Evan White, mystery pitches and some striking style from Tom Murphy make the cut. The whole gang wonders about the PECOTA projections for the Mariners and wonder if it could be underestimating a young team. Do you agree with the PECOTA projections or do you believe in the Mariners? There is much due fawning over Julio’s new commercials for Topps baseball cards with great anticipation for his even more awesome star power yet to come. How will Julio improve in 2023? Everyone has a different but equally exciting answer. Lastly, Kate confirms she is not hard and would not last long in a zombie apocalypse. 04 Dec 2022Sorcerer Supreme In Seattle: Lookout Landing Podcast 21101:16:06
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Trader Jerry strikes again! After adding Teoscar Hernandez several weeks ago, the Mariners have continued to forge the 2023 roster by acquiring long-rumored Mariner and much needed second baseman Kolten Wong in exchange for struggling prospect Abraham Toro and Jesse “change of scenery” Winker. The crew Kate Preusser and John Trupin are here (Evan is out sick) to fit all the pieces together and see how the Mariners currently stack up against their primary competition: The Houston Astros (who just signed Jose Abreu) and the Texas Rangers (who just signed Jacob deGrom). While this trade seemingly closes the door on signing one of the big ticket free agent infielders, it also closes a big hole in the Mariners infield and opens up the possibility to use prospects and free agent dollars to add at other positions. With some interesting options available on the trade market, do you think this was the right strategy for the team? Who would you like to see the team acquire (Brian Reynolds) or sign (Mitch “for Mayor” Haniger) in the wake of this trade? Do you think Aaron Judge gets a full 10 year deal? What do you make of Kolten Wong's strage defensive season in 2022? Crank up the heat and let the hot stove cook! 18 Apr 2022Lookout Landing Podcast 185: Teetering Competency With Matthew Roberson01:16:44
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! The Mariners are right at .500 after taking the home opening series against the Houston Astros to sit comfortably at 5 – 5 through 10 games. Today we are blessed with the return of Looking Landing Podcast prodigal son and New York Daily News writer, Mr. Matthew Roberson, fresh of a dunking from Buck Showalter and an elevator ride with Chris Christie. We have Matthew reveal all the secrets and behind the scenes tips from a true baseball media insider. We look around the league and analyze the returns from the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox series. We get explicitly political as the ambient sounds of New York envelop the podcast. Kate and John dig deep into the emergent legend of Matt Brash. We overwhelmingly concur that Ty France played Yu Gi Oh. Matthew outs himself as a Verlander Truther and we collectively dismay that JV has returned to haunt the Mariners into eternity. Lastly, we look ahead to the Texas Rangers series, kicking off with (maybe) Gray vs Ray, the battle of the century, as the Mariners will get their first look at the Rangers expensive new offense for the first time, while Matthew predicts a bright future for the Mets in the East. 13 May 2021Lookout Landing Podcast 159: Happy Jarred Kelenic (and Logan Gilbert) Day!01:17:32
The day has come! Two of our supposed saviors are finally in Seattle, and they’re playing on Thursday night at T-Mobile. It’s been a season of deflation in a lot of ways, so does this news put the air back in our bouncy house? That’s really for Jarred Kelenic to decide. Matthew reminds everyone that Brodie van Wagenen is the driving force that made this happen, while also revealing that he tried to record this song only to realize that his voice was trash. Do we have any concerns about Kelenic’s game? While we were having a nice, relaxing talk, the news that Logan Gilbert was also coming up came across the wire. We react calmly and normally. Is it a little messed up that Gilbert’s first start will naturally get overshadowed by his left fielder? Kate warns us not to sleep on Gilbert’s competitiveness, even if it’s less outward than his blonde-haired teammate. More questions about Kelenic include: Is it possible to be...too strong? Where does he hit in the lineup? Could he be the best left fielder in team history? How long will it take for him to join that conversation? How do we feel about him as a person? The listeners want to know what our definition of success would be for these rugrats, who will be on the receiving end of Kelenic’s first pimp job, and how much fans should tame their expectations to avoid getting over their skis. The last part of the show is dedicated to fighting one of nature’s most adorable birds. Music: “24 Hours” by Sky Ferreira // “100% Pure Love” by Crystal Waters Learn more about your ad choices. 29 May 2020Lookout Landing Podcast 115: Bucky Jacobsen joins the show01:23:07
0:00-28:10: Mourning a Memorial Day without baseball before welcoming Mariner legend Bucky Jacobsen to the show! Bucky breaks down the origins of his name and how he went from the smallest kid in his school to a hulking MLB slugger. Which earthly process does Bucky’s career most resemble, and how did it come out of eastern Oregon? He also shares a story about his athletic career in the aquatic world. 29:15-43:55: Let’s dig in to Bucky’s career, starting with the day he got called up in 2004. You might not remember which beloved Mariner got released to make room for big #33. You definitely don’t remember what happened in his first game, which was a disaster for the Mariners but memorable for Bucky, especially because of a pregame ritual that ticked off the second baseman. 44:00-55:55: What changes has Bucky noticed in baseball culture today compared to when he played? Which future Hall of Famer did Bucky describe as having a “dump truck ass” when they crossed paths in the Venezuelan winter ball? This leads to some talk about the Mariners’ current crop of prospects and how they might progress. 56:00-1:20:00: Time for trivia! We ask Bucky if he knows the only Mariner to hit more home runs than him in less than 180 plate appearances. Can he name every pitcher he homered off? Finally, we end with an Ichiro story. Hello Seattle Mariners fans! John Trupin, Kate Preusser and Evan James are here for the Meet at the Mitt episode 16 on the morning of May 16th! After a Kirby start where the mariners beat the tar out of the feeble Detroit Tigers, much optimism abounds. First up John asks the gang whether or not this is the greatest Mariners rotation of all time? How does it compare to the legendary 2001 and 2010 rotations? What is eating Matt Brash? Kate gives flowers to Taylor Saucedo and Juan Then for their impressive innings out of the pen. 01 Apr 2021Lookout Landing Podcast 154: Mariners Opening Day 2021, let's have some fun01:08:41
0:00 - 6:30: As we get settled in for the podcast and also the outset of the MLB season, we note a few fun facts that home in front of Matthew, Kate, and John. New Red Sox UTIL man Enrique Hernández is a surprisingly popular jersey, Matthew loves a flowy baseball pant for the summer season, and John manages to successfully quiet and calm a woebegone Corgi before diving into the questions. 6:30 - 31:00: Questions!!! Some of the topics include... what's the outfield going to look like in the early days with Kyle Lewis OFFICIALLY on the 10-day IL to start the year? We remain mildly flabbergasted by José Marmolejos sidling his way onto the roster once more. John considers getting his Jeff Feagles on for Matthew's cheerful suggestion of a Mitch Haniger trade return, and Kate and John spar over Haniger's relative value to the Mariners versus another club. Where might Haniger be shopped to if Seattle is in fact in such a flush position midseason when their young outfield is potentially runneth over? Also, Kate uncorks a secret tip of the trade for teachers everywhere. 34:00 - 1:05:41 (END): Further email questions dig into the pitching staff and third base position. Yusei Kikuchi is a hot topic, particularly wondering about how his 2021 could lead to the Mariners choosing to take his 4-year, $66 million team option after 2021. Kate creates a new type of guy, John makes a comp for Kikuchi that his cohosts do NOT accept gladly. Not much love is cast Ty France's way defensively, but the group is split on how Kyle Seager might be replaced (or not replaced) after 2021. Matthew learns a little French in attempting to locate Shed Long Jr. and we conclude by discussing what a successful/unsuccessful 2021 looks like, along with some predictions. They also debate if Seattle’s current run of nice weather is good or bad for quarantining? 16:55-37:30: Diving into our Twitter questions, which provides a natural jumping off point for Kate to talk about her first foray into video games. Matthew only knows about video games that are at least six years old. Which player did Kate take the most joy in striking out while playing The Show? After this spirited discussion, we answer one of the best Mariner questions we’ve ever received.  37:35-50:35: What are the actual Mariners up to? You can check out minor league sidearm pitcher Jack Anderson on Instagram for some woodworking content. Isn’t it wild how clocks don’t exist anymore and all we have is our stomachs telling us that it’s time to eat again? Which novelty toy that was popular in the ‘70s did Matthew miss out on because Bartellls ran out? We also come out as an anti-sourdough starter podcast. 50:40-1:03:00: Remember, you can always do nothing, as long as nothing means “listening to the Lookout Landing podcast”. Or watch the Casey Anthony documentary. Who cares, none of this will feel real a year from now, just like we’ll all laugh hysterically at this god-awful plan MLB devised to save the season. 27 Jan 2020Lookout Landing Podcast 99: "Why I'm a Mariners Fan" with Jeva Lange00:51:47
0:00-12:25: Jeva Lange, a culture critic for The Week, joins the show to discuss her Mariner journey! Jeva grew up on the Eastside but lives in New York City and, in her own words, is an avid Mariner fan but also a bit detached. This means, unfortunately, that a huge part of her Mariner experience is watching them at Yankee Stadium. Pro tip from a New Yorker: Citi Field > Yankee Stadium. What was her reaction to seeing James Paxton in pinstripes all over town? How does she cope with having a boyfriend that actively roots for the Oakland Athletics? 12:30-29:05: How to explain the Mariners to non-sports people. Claiming bragging rights on prolonged suffering. Matthew and Jeva discuss things that can take your mind off of sports and also the ways those can backfire. However, we will always have the luxury of falling asleep to Mariner games, especially those of us on the east coast. How do we feel Twitter has shaped our approach to baseball? What about keeping score? A brief chat on the art of doing things by yourself.  29:10-41:25: We’re talking uniforms, baby! Get ready to have someone say something you disagree with. Despite being a self-proclaimed superstitious person, Jeva is still a proud trident hat wearer. How does being a critic affect Jeva’s outlook on a 162-game season? Which current Mariner does Jeva have a truly insane story about? 41:30-47:47: How we feeling with another fresh season just months away? Find out who Jeva’s favorite player on the roster is and what baseball-related item she bought on her trip to Japan last year. If you’re planning a trip to see the Mariners in New York or Spring Training this year, look for Jeva! Music: “Bike Dream” by Rostam // “Us” by Regina Spektor Learn more about your ad choices. 16 May 2024Which Mitch Is Which? Meet at the Mitt Podcast00:59:21
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Evan James and Anders Jorstad are here on Wednesday afternoon, May 15th to talk Mariners after a series win over the Kansas City Royals. Julio’s bat seems to be heating up, but is he all the way there? What do we make of Mitch, Mitch and Jorge? The Return of Canzone is here, but how will playing time shake out? Where would we be comfortable adding a trade piece/who would we be comfortable sitting to accommodate the trade? How close are Locklear and Young getting to the show? Is Felnin Celestin primed to break out? Shout out to our sponsor MacDougall bats! 16 Apr 2021Lookout Landing Podcast 156: Bullpen woes and Baltimore woos01:20:47
Good morning to your first place Seattle Mariners, frustrating and fascinating in, well, not equal measure, but hefty sums. With Matthew traipsing along the coastline of the Pacific Ocean, John and Kate commandeer the helm and break down their pleasant surprises and early disappointments, digging beyond the still-stinging loss of James Paxton and looking at a few starters who had more encouraging outings on Thursday. We talk Taylor Trammell, both in context of the present and future, with an eye on the 'ol service time manipulation requirement counter for Mr. Jarred Kelenic, which has ticked down to zero and is now smoking and threatening to burst. Also highlighted: the bullpen! Is this just what it's going to be with John Stanton pulling out the empty pockets of his casual fit Fendi slacks and making a frowny face at M's fans? As exciting as this club has shown it has the capacity to be, their penny pinching has already cost them a few games and should likely have cost them more with a bullpen of question marks. We rapid-fire a few more questions and finish with a discussion of what other clubs and players have caught our eye league-wide, as well as our... excitement(?) at the Astros coming to town as a test for these M's. 02 Jul 2022Lookout Landing Podcast 193: When You Wish Upon A Winker01:15:51
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! This week John, Kate and I look at the surging Mariners, fresh off of beat down series against the hapless Baltimore Orioles and the sinful Los Angeles Angels. After a win last night against the w”A’s”hed Oakland Athletics, the Mariners find themselves a mere 4 games under .500, with winnable series ahead and some injured stars returning. We assess the Mariners spot in the second wildcard hunt and try to envision what the trade deadline might look like for a team in this position. We collectively emerge from the covid fugue state to answer twitter questions from our diehard fans. John digs into Jarred’s Tacoma Rainiers stat line and identifies improvements. We look at the Mariners pitching situation and who might cover Kirby’s rookie innings gap over the final quarter of the season. We barely even mention Julio because he’s so good that functionally he has become a separate entity entirely. Long live the J Rod Show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
18 Jan 2023New World Order of the Phoenix - Is Felnin Celesten A Future Seattle Superstar?: Lookout Landing Podcast01:40:10
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! The whole crew Kate, John and Evan are back in for the second podcast of 2023, basking in the afterglow of the freshly finished Seattle Seahawks season and looking ahead to spring training just around the corner. First up, "the Phoenix" Felnin Celsten is finally here. After what feels like 2 plus years of speculation linking the top international prospect to the team, the deal has finally come to fruition. Next up Kate gives a deeper analysis on Dylan Wilson out of Curaçao and notes the Mariners success in drafting out of Venezuela (Felix!). John ponders the Mariners success with international pitchers and the tangled web it weaves. Next the whole gang answers twitter questions for our wonderful listeners and diagnoses the fix for the Seattle Mariners arbitration cases. 30 Apr 2020Lookout Landing Podcast 112: The Glue Guys Draft01:17:22
0:00-7:25: Matthew drops a fire intro before teeing up his guest, Lookout Landing staffer Grant Bronsdon. The fellas are joined together, separately, to draft teams of Glue Guys. This is essentially the direct opposite of the last draft they did, in which they tried to create the best possible teams in Mariner history out of individual players’ seasons. For this one, the only players who are eligible are ones who were not very good. If you were worth 3.0 Wins Above Replacement, sorry, you’re disqualified. This draft was inspired by Matthew’s world-changing article from last week. 7:30-29:55: With the first pick, Matthew perhaps falls victim to recency bias. Grant responds by taking someone from the 2001 team, but probably not who you think! After Matthew makes his second pick, a quick Internet search reveals a hilarious story about him. After a defensive specialist and a superstar on the come up get picked, Grant grabs the first pitcher and Matthew takes a cartoonish slugger. 30:00-39:40: Grant responds with a glue guy slugger of his own, who is also one of the best players in franchise history, because Mariners. This leads to a world of discovery at the next pick, when a Mariner legend from the early days is snatched up, causing two people who were not born at the time of his playing career to find out that he was a…free spirit. Then, a wild relief pitcher appears! 39:45-59:20: Matthew intentionally makes things harder on Grant by drafting a guy at his second position so Grant can have him at his first. We also accidentally go out of order because neither of our brains work anymore. The next bullpen pick sparks a conversation about relievers who received MVP votes, and then. 59:25-1:14:50: Grant takes to the skies for his final pick while Matthew identifies the keys to the game. Then, we go over some honorable mentions and recap our selections before disappearing into our quarantine caves again. 04 Dec 2023Emergency Podcast: Mariners Offload Salary, Strikeouts; Acquire Payroll Flexibility, Suspect Pitchers01:21:20
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Evan James, John Trupin, Max Ellingsen and Kate Preusser are here for an emergency episode of the podcast as one of the biggest moves of the offseason has fallen. After not extending a qualifying offer to Teoscar Hernández and trading Eugenio Suárez, the Mariners have now traded Jarred Kelenic along with Evan White and Marco Gonzales, surely for salary considerations in such a deal. Emotions are running high as one major piece of the Mariners outfield future is moving on so soon, but did they get anything interesting in return at least? Well, mixed reviews on that front, which is perhaps the most important piece of discussion. Jackson Kowar is at the very least a major league pitcher, kinda. Cole Phillips is to quote John “a very interesting pitcher coming off tommy john surgery”. Shout out to our sponsor MacDougall bats! 23 Jun 2022Lookout Landing Podcast 192: We Come Back To You Now, At The Turn Of The Tide00:59:19
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! We have been away, and ill, as two of our fearless podcast hosts have come down with the ‘Rona over the past week. We collectively remind everyone to get boosted if you can, mask up, stay healthy, because being sick is neither fun nor fiscally beneficial. In the interim, the Mariners finished off a good stretch of play by dropping a series to the Angels in pitiful fashion. There has been real anger and discontent amongst the fan base, and whispers for change (read: firings) have grown louder as the team has tumbled. Kate digs into her article about the Mariners leadership and the persistent faith we have in Scott Servais as a manager. We touch on Abe Toro, Jesse Winker and some of the other Mariners who have most underperformed so far, and perhaps what can be done about it. We try to understand just where we are, how we got here, and what a path forward looks like. Full disclosure, this is a deeply sober podcast, reflective of some tangible disappointment with the team. Yet even in the darkest hours, there remain reasons for true and honest optimism: Taylor Trammel’s hitting, Cal’s hitting, Julio’s everything, Logan’s command, George’s entourage. Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint and there are miles left to run. Are the Mariners still “in it”? Not reasonably, no, but they remain one of the youngest teams in the league with more baseball in front of them than behind. Last year Ryan Divish was on the podcast about this time and the parallels were made between the 1995 and 2021 Mariners squads. If that was the case, 2022 has some resemblance to the step back of 1996 before the team truly came into its own in 1997. Development is rarely linear, and in the midst of this current struggle, it is important to recognize how far we have come as a team, an organization and a fan base. If Cal Raleigh can hit anything is possible. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
24 Jun 2020Lookout Landing Podcast 119: The Mariners... are back?01:10:28
Note: At around the midpoint (30 minutes in) John’s audio quality drops off for some reason. It’s only a mild difference but he does get quieter, apologies for the inconvenience. 0:00-14:00: So they’re gonna do this baseball thing. Matthew, Kate, and John share their trepidation for the logistics of the MLB season in the throes of a resurgence (did we ever halt the first surgence?) of COVID-19 nationwide, and somehow end up talking about cup stacking and waveboards for a while. 14:00-28:00: We dig into the temporary (or not) rule changes. Universal DHs, runners on second in extra innings, no spitting, altered ILs, and of course, the wet rag. Whose ass is going to be soaking wet for us, the viewer? 28:00-End: Questions! What is an ideal shortened Mariners season in our eyes? Is there any way MLB doesn’t royally screw this up and get a ton of people sick? How should the Mariners handle their prospects? Where is Yasiel Puig at anyways? How will a trade deadline (and trade market) work or develop, and will it impact any of the potential short-term players on Seattle’s roster? Plus, who will have the most creative “safe” celebrations? Music: “Just” by Mark Ronson & Alex Greenwald (Radiohead cover) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
10 Oct 2022Lookout Landing Podcast 205: An Infusion of Brotherhood with The Athletic's C. Trent Rosecrans01:04:19
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! This episode Lookout Landing captain Kate Preusser is joined by special guest and Cincinnati Reds writer for the Athletic, C. Trent Rosecrans to talk all things baseball but specifically some Reds/Mariners imports making waves in the Pacific Northwest. Kate praises the Mariners for acquiring Suarez & Castillo while lamenting that such foundational, all start caliber players found themselves moved at all. Trent gives a brief history of Luis Castillo, newly minted Mariner ace. Trent praises the camaraderie between Winker, Suarez and Castillo and predicts it portends great things for the Mariners. Kate and Trent dive deep on Suarez’s good vibes only policy and how it has blossomed into the Mariners collective dance routine. Trent illuminates for Mariners fans just how hard the loss of (literally ALL of) the Red’s All Stars has been for the Cincinnati faithful and perhaps how hard it has been for those same players as well. The duo discusses Winker and tries to make sense of a perplexing season on all fronts, perhaps finding some optimism for his future in Seattle. Lastly they stand back and take a birds eye view of both organizations and the bright future of the prospects acquired by the Reds: Noelvi Marte & Edwin Arroyo.   TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio https://twitter.com/ctrent Learn more about your ad choices. 21 Dec 2020Lookout Landing Podcast 142: Andrea Williams discusses her upcoming Effa Manley biography01:06:53
0:00-7:45: Prior to the recent MLB-Negro League news, Andrea Williams, author of the upcoming book Baseball's Leading Lady: Effa Manley and the Rise and Fall of the Negro Leagues, called the Lookout Landing hotline. The prerequisite vibe check blends into a conversation about the parallels between today and some of the book’s themes. Andrea also reflects on the fact she’s publishing a book during a pandemic. 7:50-24:55: What caused Andrea to take an interest in baseball in the first place? After name dropping Johnny Damon and Jermaine Dye, a confession arises from the rubble of Kansas City fandom. To kick off the deeper Effa Manley conversation, a brief primer is required. Not only does Andrea explain who Effa was and what she did, but also the layers of Black baseball that enrich her greater story. Branch Rickey, catch this fade. Just because Harrison Ford played you in a movie doesn’t automatically mean you get off scot-free. 25:00-37:30: What did Andrea think about the way things unfolded this summer, as she began promoting a book about Effa Manley and the Negro Leagues as America started paying more attention to race relations? It turns out, writing a book is very hard. What are some things that need to happen moving forward to ensure that progress doesn’t stall out? Andrea shares her promise of becoming “obsessed” with Effa and how much knowledge she had before putting pen to paper. This portion of the show also includes an examination of Jackie Robinson under a different lens.  38:30-1:03:53: The logos and graphic design of the Negro Leagues were cool as hell. Andrea details the perspective of her writing for this book, what she hopes to accomplish with it, and how seeking information from the correct sources is the most important part of learning. To put a bow on this lively conversation about what is sure to be a wonderful book, Andrea reads a passage from it. 07 Jul 2021Lookout Landing Podcast 163: The Prodigal Son Returns01:16:52
This week we look at red hot Mariners as the stone cold Yankees come to town. In order to further our analysis we feature the return of the prodigal son, current shadow manager of the New York sports teams, Mr. Matthew Robertson. He dishes on the morbid state of the 4th place Yankees team, his close relationship with Aaron Boone, the ghost of Brett Gardner still haunting New York, and their new "hit by pitch" secret weapon Tim Locastro. We also look at some potential Mariners trade and free agent targets as we move closer to the second half, and generally reflect on what has been an excellent run of baseball for the team over the past month. In the future we aim to be releasing this very podcast on Wednesdays, so be looking out for it! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

11 Feb 2020Lookout Landing Podcast 101: Who are these guys?01:06:44
0:00-17:15: First question, what goin on? Second question, how do we sneak John into the Mariners’ bullpen? This portends what is, no joke, probably the most in-depth discussion on the Mariners’ bullpen that anyone has had in months. Small steps, mankind, things of that nature…Read more about Yoshihisa Hirano from this titan of online reporting. 17:20-20:40: Please, Mariners, please, at the very least, give us some fun. Maybe that means Zac Grotz breakdancing on the mound. Goodbye to Reggie McClain. We hardly knew ye. Hello to Yoshihisa Hirano, who is wearing a single digit number. 20:45-35:35: What will the outfield look like as Mitch Haniger remains shelved? Do the Mariners have a third straight Opening Day upset in store? Matthew proposes a revolutionary approach to lineup management. John mentions one of the utility men that Seattle has run through the Dylan Moore-Shawn O’Malley car wash in hopes that some of their stuff seeps in. Allow us to introduce you to José “El Loco” Siri. What do we expect from Nick Margevicius?  35:40-48:55: Where does the Mariners’ shipwreck end up? A top-five draft pick would be nice, but so would having working eyesight by the end of the season, and those things are working directly against each other. Kate and John talk about getting mad online because of prospect rankings. Which young buck do we expect to get their antlers? 49:00-1:02:44: Do we get any fun comedy this season? Does the Mariners Quad-A squad make it out of Minute Maid alive? It’s not the Lookout Landing podcast without someone pulling up from 35 feet with a vocal impression. 18 Jul 2022Lookout Landing Podcast 195: Flawless Execution, Total Domination01:23:24
Hello Seattle Mariners fans. My how the mighty have fallen, and the chosen have risen. Yes indeed, the Seattle Mariners, after bottoming out at 10 games under .500 in May, have miraculously rattled off 14 wins in a row to ride off into the All Star break at a brisk 51-42, a game ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays for the second wild card spot. For this special episode (noted Abe Toro fan) Jacob Parr and Grant Bronsdon take over for John, joining Kate and Evan to celebrate the Mariners historic streak. The crew takes listener questions about key moments from the win streak and favorite games in particular. We highlight specific players who have turned it up in July and deserve some flowers, notably Cal, Sam Haggerty? And Carlos Santana. We ponder a trade for Juan Soto in Mariners teal, and make some bold predictions for the home run derby. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
22 Apr 2024Flying High In Colorado - Did Julio Get His Groove Back? Meet at the Mitt Podcast01:09:25
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! John Trupin, Evan James and Grant Bronsdon are here on April 21st 2024 to talk suddenly red hot Mariners before the double header closes out the weekend. Last night, on an audacious 4/20 the Mariners decided to roll up and smoke the Rockies in a blizzard. Finally getting deep double digits hits (4 hits for Cal and Julio!) propelled the offense to look more alive than they have all season. Your eyes do not deceive you, the team had indeed played better offensively and defensively of late. Where did the suspect fielding go? Has the offense found its grove or is this a strength of opponent mirage that will fade in Texas? The MATM crew takes a smattering of listener questions from Twitter and tries to sus out the forest from the trees in a time when small samples begin to crystalize as trends. 02 Apr 2020Lookout Landing Podcast 108: Killing Time with Nick Stillman01:08:51
0:00-17:40: Matthew is joined by Nick Stillman, his former colleague at both Lookout Landing and Short Relief. They begin by talking about how normal and not weird their lives have been during this global pandemic. Just kidding! Did I fool you? Do you still remember how humor works? Is society still there? Are you high right now? Do you ever get nervous? 17:45-26:25: How on Earth do we fill the void left by baseball’s absence? Which food is most like watching the Mariners? What happens if, after all of this, the Mariners are just super good? 26:30-47:35: Are we ready to watch old Mariner games again? Matthew already treated himself to this one. What makes for a good Mariner re-watch anyway? What did we think this season was going to look like before the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 ruined our lives? Nick had high hopes for this group at least being a fun team to hang out with. Where are we at now, in terms of optimism for having a season? Luckily, podcasts are an essential business. 47:40-1:06:00: Why is Nick Stillman a fan of the Seattle Mariners? There’s some real romantic stuff in here, folks. A good conclusion from this portion of the show: nerds are always right. Matthew also shares a story about the 2014 Marlins teaching him how much he loves baseball. 11 Mar 2022Emergency Podcast: Baseball is Back01:16:08
Hello Seattle Mariners Fans! After 99 long days locked out of the sport we all love, the chains have come off the doors and it is time to come home to baseball. Yes indeed, the players union has reached an agreement with Major League Baseball that was confirmed earlier this afternoon (Thursday, March 10th 2022), an as of 3PM PST free agency is back open for business. Kate is here to bring us into the big news with myself (Evan James) and prospect expert Joe Doyle to break into the juicy details behind the new agreement. This includes things like the Universal DH appearing for the first time in 2022, a major pay increase for young players, and a new competitive balance system aimed at penalizing teams for repeating losing seasons. We talk about some of the major changes in the new CBA, and how some of the tendrils could affect the Mariners operations moving forward, especially as it relates to highly regarded prospects. We dig into a wealth of twitter questions about potential trades or free agent signings by the team, but ultimately hit the pause button on that speculation while the hot stove heats back up over the next 24 hours. Be on your toes fam, we will be back with another impromptu emergency pod when the Mariners sign Kris Bryant. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hello Seattle Mariners fans! Evan James and Anders Jorstad are joined by Lookout Landing prospect expert Max Ellingsen on Thursday June 6th where the talk of the town is new bullpen convert Logan Evans. 13 Jul 2024They Might Be Mariners: 2024 Draft Edition - Meet at the Mitt Podcast01:54:02
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! John Trupin, Kate Preusser are joined by Lookout Landing prospect expert Max Ellingsen on July 13th to talk future stars at the halfway point in the minor league season. Max has been spending time watching the Everett Aquasox, getting to see the much heralded Lazaro Montes and Michael Arroyo in person. Max remarks on improved athleticism and movement from our future star and Kate points out that Lazaro has unfairly been given the “big boy” speed tax based on his size. Kate says Aidan Smith in the fourth round was the Mariners biggest draft steal in recent years, next to Logan Evans and Brandon Garcia. The gang reflects on the Fangraphs prospect rankings and the differences in perception on some of the higher profile names (Arroyo, Ford, Morales). Finally we shift to looking at the draft and a world of possible selections. Does the team add young arms to begin the next rotation? Could a surprise college bat make an impact right away? Which teams might be looking to draft similar players and could foil the plot? https://mybookie.website/MeetAtTheMitt TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/MeetattheMitt https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio https://twitter.com/AndersJorstad https://twitter.com/RealZachMason https://x.com/EllingsenMax18 https://macdougallbats.com/ We are partnering with MY BOOKIE to give you an extra 50% on your first deposit! 16 Nov 2022Scott Was Robbed: Lookout Landing Podcast 21001:27:24
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! The crew Kate Preusser, Evan James and John Trupin are back to feast on mid-November hot stove cooking. Scott was shafted in the Manager of the Year voting in favor of Terry Francona, Julio Rodriguez was rightfully crowned Rookie of the Year and the Mariners have traded Erik Swanson and Adam Macko for Teoscar Hernández. It’s a whirlwind start to the stove season and I would ask you faithful listeners, how would you rate these moves? Teoscar adds a real bat in an otherwise sparse outfield group, even if the defense is somewhat suspect. New bullpen arms Luke Weaver, Gabe Speier and Easton McGee start filling out “the pile”, but let us know if you have a dark horse in that group. Are you excited to see Isaiah Campbell attempt to wrestle away the title of “best stache in the northwest” from Gardner Minshew? How do you see his infusion of dad energy meshing with the team’s existing vibe? Are you sad about Casey Sadler? Let us know in the comments. Lastly we look forward into the hot stove future and pick out some dates to mark on your calendars. The team has added a big piece, but the question of just how much better the squad is after the trade is an important one. How many wins would you say Teoscar adds? Was this the right move for this team to make instead of a free agent add? And do you think they have the resources to pull off another meaningful trade? Let the hot stove cook.   TWITTER LINKS: https://twitter.com/LookoutLanding https://twitter.com/JohnTrupin https://twitter.com/KatePreusser https://twitter.com/EvanJamesAudio Learn more about your ad choices. 06 May 20209. They Might Be Mariners: Reviewing Seattle's draft history - 2013-201501:27:19
John, Kate, and Joe coalesce to discuss something far less appealing than the upcoming draft: Seattle Mariners drafts of the past. Specifically, looking at the waning years of the Jack Zduriencik regime, and what happened with the 2013, 2014, and 2015 drafts. Plenty went wrong, obviously, but many of the picks made sense at the time, and only with the benefit of hindsight can we piece together how truly awry things went. Together, we try to put ourselves in the mindset of those drafts, and draw connections between the decisions made then and what might lie ahead in the 2020 draft. A healthy discussion on player development, communication, and what we all want to see next from the Dipoto regime lies within. In exchange the Mariners parted with a player to be named later and 2023 draft picks Brody Hopkins and Aidan Smith. Is this as cheap as it seems? 16 Mar 2021Lookout Landing Podcast 152: Shannon Drayer on Mariners’ Spring Training, Kyle Seager, and the kiddos01:18:32
0:00-15:20: Longtime beat reporter Shannon Drayer was kind enough to call in and give us the low down on Spring Training. What’s it like to be one of the few people who’s actually on the ground watching this stuff happen? How do the players seem to feel about it? Shannon tells us that with so few people in the stadium, managers on the field can hear writers in the press box talking about them. She also acknowledged that even though last season was only 60 games, there was an unquestioned element of fatigue when it was over. 15:25-35:55: A firsthand story of what it was like to be at Spring Training last year when the initial shutdown happened. Some gabbing about Kyle Seager’s pandemic looks open us up for a larger conversation. Shannon shares her thoughts on the Kevin Mather situation, and how much it’s still lingering over camp. Kate asks straight up if Marco Gonzales is boring. 36:55-51:15: Let’s talk about some of the personalities on the Mariners that we haven’t been able to see yet. There’s a relief pitcher who, according to Shannon, threw himself into the leadership van’s driver’s seat. We get some fascinating insight as well into the young players and how they gather like moths around certain veteran lights. One thing about Lookout Landing dot com, Julio Rodríguez gonna come up. 51:20-1:07:45: Shannon helps us figure out these final roster spots! Dunn or Margevicius? Who goes to the bullpen? What does the back end of the bullpen look like, both in terms of usage and in terms of stuff? How close is Logan Gilbert, who we’ve already seen punch Mike Trout out? We all have our own opinions about the rugrats and when they should make their big-league debuts. What does the actual organization that makes those decisions think, though? 1:07:50-1:15:00: We get some very heartening news when Shannon Drayer, queen of the Mariners’ beat, admits that even she struggles to recognize some of these guys. One guy who is always recognizable, though, is Ichiro. What’s it like watching him transition from legendary player to legendary quasi coach? 06 May 202126. They Might be Mariners: Minor League Season Preview!01:26:40
It's been what felt like a decade, and in actuality was a year and a half on the Gregorian Calendar, but official, affiliated Minor League Baseball has returned at last. Our prospect team of Kate, Joe, and John are over the moon, and absolutely elated at the chance to see old friends and (functionally) new faces playing on a near-nightly basis yet again. The reoriented minor league schedule has no shortage of new tricks up its sleeves, including a schedule that leaves Monday as an off day every week, at every level except AAA. Nonetheless, from the intriguing arms and Latin lineup of Modesto to the prospect-drenched Everett pitching staff AND position player group, to the few hungry youngsters and longtime farm hands in Arkansas, to the three guys most likely to play in Seattle in the next few months licking their chops in Tacoma, we've got you covered on everything you need to know for a summer of minor league baseball. 15 Mar 2022Emergency Podcast: Jerry Nabs A Winker01:14:09
Hello Seattle Mariners fandom! Well, here we are. The team did it. After intense speculation, hot stove rumors that burned us all, and a seemingly lack of real free agent acquisitions, the team has address the biggest holes in the lineup with two the Cincinnati Reds biggest stars. While this doesn’t necessarily preclude the team from otherwise making a big spending splash, Jerry seemed to admit on Monday that free agent quests “hit dead ends” and this seems to be more or less the infield/outfield we should expect going forward, or at least for now. There’s no question at all that the team is better today. We on this pod have openly advocated for moving Jake Fraley, and Williamson has long been seen as the most pliable prospect on a team littered with quality arms up and down the farm system. But is this the fleecing some are making it out to be? And with Suarez in particular, what kind of performance can we expect going forward? The only way to find out is to listen. 30 Apr 202125. They Might Be Mariners: Early prospect impressions and Mock Draft intrigue01:11:15
With the long awaited beginning of the minor league baseball season right around the corner, Joe, John, and Kate convene once again to kick off a more regular schedule of They Might Be Mariners. This week's episode takes on three major topics: the current progression of the prospects at the big league level and down at minor league spring training, the developments of possible selections in the 2021 amateur draft, where Seattle picks 12th overall, and the upcoming assignments of minor leaguers to their affiliates, which should be revealed in full by this weekend. Much of our discussion centers around Seattle's drafting proclivities in past, and how their comfort in developing a certain type of player (read: college pitcher) can be a positive or a negative. We also look more specifically at some of the recent mock drafts put out by national sites, who have paired Seattle with a few players we have wide ranging opinions on, including University of Miami C Adrian Del Castillo. 17 Apr 2023Sunny Side Up - Have The Mariners Steadied The Ship? Meet at the Mitt Podcast01:34:56
Hello Seattle Mariners fans! John Trupin, Kate Preusser and Evan James are here for the Meet At The Mitt episode 9! The Mariners swept the Colorado Rockies out of Seattle and find themselves at .500 with things looking up as the rare foe St. Louis Cardinals come to T Mobile Park. Ten percent of the season is in the book, so how are we feeling? Jarred, right? So hot right now. The biggest (non)surprise so far? The pitching staff is collectively tied with Tampa Bay for the league lead in WAR by Fangraphs. Kate goes into detail on Logan Gilbert, Walter, “The Stopper” and how essential he has been to the team’s success. Twitter questions abound on the great shelling of Chris Flexen, Kolten Wong’s smoke and mirrors show and the state of the American League West. Everyone gets in a few jabs at the deeply questionable design choices embroidered in the Texas Rangers City Connect uniforms and nervously awaits the Mariners own design reveal on May 5th. 03 Feb 2020Lookout Landing Podcast 100: We're not talking about baseball!01:05:19
0:00-15:00: 100 episodes, countless laughs, infinite bad takes, they’ve all led to this moment. Just please don’t actually go back and count, we’ve probably made several counting mistakes. For this very enormous episode, we’ve decided to not talk about baseball at all. Instead, we answer all of your random, non-sports questions from Twitter. First up: when is it too late to say Happy New Year? John and Matthew then wax poetic about their favorite high school teachers. 15:05-26:50: Matthew defends two dirtbag California bands. Which Adam Sandler vehicle gets John the most conflictedly excited? Kate espouses a certain fast food chain’s breakfast menu. 26:55-40:20: We talk pets! Good, bad, annoying, alive, and those no longer with us. Stick around to find out which avian creature John considers his favorite animal.  40:25-1:01:00: Which one of us is trying to leave Earth for a new life on Mars? Then, somehow, we get into Kate speaking Latin and some philosophical musings. What happens to Mariner fans when we start to have good, happy expectations seep in? How has the crushing weight of failure affected our approach to blogging? What would life be like if the Mariners had the Dodgers’ level of regular season success? Support us this season as the Mariners gear up for another bad time! We end by previewing some upcoming content, which we promise will be about baseball.  Music: “Passing Out Pieces” by Mac DeMarco // “Glowed Up” by Kaytranada & Anderson .Paak Learn more about your ad choices. 09 Mar 202124. They Might Be Mariners: Talking changeups and TJ recovery with RHP prospect Levi Stoudt00:57:05
Kate, Joe, and John are joined by Mariners 2019 3rd round pick, RHP Levi Stoudt out of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The one time 97th overall pick has shot up some scouting lists over the winter, including ranking 12th in the organization according to Baseball America. Stoudt has yet to pitch in an official professional game due to Tommy John surgery he underwent shortly after draft day in 2019 and the cancellation of the MiLB seasons in 2020, but he turned plenty of heads in the fall instructional league Seattle was able to put on with a few other clubs. We asked him about what it's like to be entering his third year as a pro, with plenty of momentum and enthusiasm, but not having technically debuted. His mid-90s heat and Vulcan changeup work alongside a sweeping slider, and we ask him about how he developed each pitch. The Eastern Pennsylvania native also shared his opinions on several of the state's finest fare, and potentially making a case for water ice to finally sweep the West Coast, with Kate's enthusiastic backing. We also hear Stoudt's draft day story, his intense on field face-off against one of the top starters in his draft class, and what exactly someone does in Peoria, Arizona when they've spent over two years almost exclusively rehabbing and adding strength without games to play in.
