09 Jan 2021 | What Do Farmers Think of GMOs and Pesticides? with The Farm Babe Michelle Miller | 00:38:44
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Are you worried about pesticides on your produce? Do you want to eat healthy but can’t always afford to buy organic? Do you worry that the chemicals that farmers use are compromising your health? I want to help you understand the real danger of pesticides and GMOs from the perspective of someone who has been on both sides of the argument. My guest today was previously opposed to pesticides and GMOs, but after increasing her understanding of farming practices by becoming one herself, has become an advocate for GMO practices and works to inform consumers about the truth behind pesticides. I’m joined today by Michelle Miller, also known as The Farm Babe, a keynote speaker, online influencer and farmer who raises sheep, beef cattle and grows over 2,000 acres of corn and soybeans in Northeast Iowa. Michelle herself is a mythbuster that works to connect consumers and farmers. She explains her own journey from myth-believer to mythbuster and explains in clear and simple terms the truth about the practices of both conventional and organic farmers, the pesticides and practices they both use, and what these facts mean for the health and safety of consumers.
Key Takeaways: [1:08] Today’s topic is the truth about GMOs and pesticides. [2:24] Michelle explains the reasons she ate non-GMO and organic foods in the first place and the experiences that started to shift her understanding. [7:41] The amount of herbicides sprayed on a GMO field per year is equivalent to two beer cans — Michelle explains how different that looks from the chemicals farmers were using in the 1960s. [9:08] A comparison of the relative toxicity of glyphosate — also known as RoundUp — compared to the table salt in your kitchen. [11:22] The importance of eating more fruits and vegetables will always outweigh the net effects of pesticides, and a look at what non-GMO labels have to gain by selling to consumer fears. [13:44] What precautions do farmers take to ensure pesticides don’t harm butterflies and bees? And how can everyone benefit from keeping an open mind to all science and medicine? [20:00] Dr. C shares his farming background, the life experiences that led him to naturopathy, and his desire to keep all people as informed as possible. [25:33] Is it possible that you’re not feeling well because you ate GMOs? Consider your diet, exercise and sleep habits before you draw any conclusions about GMOs. [27:32] Consumers need to choose to not be intellectually lazy when seeking to understand their health problems — “Dr. Google” is not going to give you the full picture of what exactly is going on. [30:03] Which pesticides are actually dangerous, and in what amounts? Even organic and home-gardened food does not provide pesticide-free options. [33:14] An overview of sustainability, using science for agriculture and the difference between attempting to produce purely organic produce now from 100 years ago. [35:20] Does it really make sense for farmers to destroy their soil and crops with harmful pesticides? Michelle explains the risks farmers aren’t willing to take when using pesticides. Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. On this episode we’re taking a look at your gut and the fermented foods that are claiming to increase your overall health. Fermented foods can be good for your intestines, but some fermented foods are actually harmful to your health in certain situations. Oftentimes the fermented foods that are being sold in grocery stores are not the same foods that are being studied in research, and that can make it very difficult to know which fermented foods you should incorporate into your diet. I’m joined today by Summer Bock, a microbiologist with a thorough background in the fermented world who trains fermentationists and coined the term ‘gut rebuilding’. We’re going deep into all things fermented, including the time Summer got into a bathtub full of fermented foods. She explains the history of food fermenting, which fermented foods you should avoid at the grocery store, and the value of incorporating fermented foods into your diet for improved overall health. If you have been struggling with your gut health and aren’t sure what to try next, be sure to listen to my conversation about fermented foods with Summer Bock.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is fermented foods — which ones are best for your gut health, which ones should you avoid, and how they can help improve your overall health. [2:18] Introducing Summer Bock, who explains why certain ferments should be avoided depending on your health concerns. [4:02] Examining the authenticity of one of the hottest fermented food products on the market today — kefir. [6:53] What is a SCOBY, where did it come from and how does it affect food fermentation? [10:29] Lactic acid is a healthy natural microbial most commonly found in yogurt. [12:08] How does leaky gut react to ingesting fermented foods? [14:58] Summer explains multiple reasons why you will want to avoid kombucha when dealing with digestive issues. [19:18] GMOs and natural fermented foods — is it possible for a natural food be patented, marketed and sold in grocery stores? [21:23] Understanding how foods fit together from a historical standpoint and multiple ways that fermented foods interact with your bodily functions. [23:22] Will you get sick if you try fermenting foods at home? Consider the sugar content, alcoholic content and smell of homemade fermented foods before drinking anything. [26:58] An overview of Summer’s gut health, chronic illness and functional ferment pairings charts. [28:12] How to avoid the pitfalls of making your own ferments at home, the value of watching someone else make a ferment in person, and why you should expect to fail at your first attempt. [30:52] The journey that led Summer to her work with fermented foods started with severe environmental allergies and led her to selling sauerkraut from her home. [37:44] Summer’s fermenting experiences, from fermenting mushrooms, tempeh, and beans to bathing in sauerkraut brine. [45:12] Digestive impairment and amino acids — are you protein deficient? Dr. C is on a mission to help us navigate the confusing world of health information. In particular, he's taking a closer look at hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's- two conditions that can be tough to understand with all the conflicting advice out there.
Hashimoto's was named after a Japanese physician who discovered its autoimmune nature in 1907. Dr. C clarifies that even though Hashimoto's is common, hypothyroidism caused by it is relatively uncommon. He also corrects the misconception that Hashimoto's always leads to hypothyroidism in a linear manner, highlighting the diverse presentations of Hashimoto's and the non-linear nature of its course. Dr. C helps us understand the differences between overt hypothyroidism and its milder forms and why it's essential to get a precise diagnosis and suitable treatment. He challenges the commonly accepted beliefs regarding the ideal levels of thyroid hormones and discusses how medications can assist in balancing our thyroid function. He also highlights the drawbacks of relying solely on pharmaceutical interventions to manage autoimmune factors. Furthermore, Dr. C addresses the prevalence of symptoms in Hashimoto's, even in the absence of overt hypothyroidism, and explores the complexities surrounding medication decisions.
As the episode concludes, Dr. C offers a glimpse into future discussions. Come along on a journey to explore thyroid health! 14 Sep 2020 | 2020 Update on Leaky Gut — The New Hypothesis with Dr. Tamara Duker Freuman | 00:51:29
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Leaky gut is the catchall scapegoat for bloating, fatigue, and constipation, but is it a real diagnosis? Is it possible that it’s not a real condition at all? Also known as increased intestinal permeability, leaky gut is a digestive condition in which bacteria and toxins are able to "leak" through the intestinal wall, but is that such a bad thing? I’m joined today by Dr. Tamara Duker Freuman, registered dietitian and author of The Bloated Belly Whisperer and expert in healing digestive disorders through diet. Dr. Freuman clearly lays out the truths and myths surrounding increased intestinal permeability and together we dive deep into the idea of leaky gut, what we actually know about permeability and its relationship to leaky gut, and how your health and wellness is affected by these facts. She explains why you actually need exposure to some of the bacteria and viruses that humans have always co-evolved with, and reasons that a one-size-fits-all approach to ‘healing’ a leaky gut isn’t going to solve your constipation and bloating issues at all. To find out what you should do instead, you need to listen to today’s episode of Medical Myths, Legends, and Fairy Tales with Dr. Tamara Duker Freuman.
Key Takeaways: [1:11] Today’s topic is leaky gut — what it actually is and how it’s really affecting your health. [2:25] Dr. C introduces Dr. Tamara Duker Freuman and shares his previous biases about a leaky gut diagnosis. 27 Jun 2019 | How Much Thyroid Medication is Too Much? Parts 1 & 2 with Janie Bowthorpe, M.Ed. | 01:08:32
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
On this episode we’re going to wrap up our examination of current thyroid disease issues. Have you ever wondered if it is okay to take higher doses of thyroid medication, even if your blood tests say you’re getting too much? Many patients say that they don’t feel better until their hormone levels are much higher than is recommended. I’m joined today by Janie Bowthorpe, thyroid patient activist and author who feels it is important to disregard blood test results. Her own health was compromised when she developed thyroid disease and it wasn’t until she started dosing natural thyroid medication more accurately that she started to feel better. She has joined me to share her opinions on the best way to diagnose and treat thyroid disease, and to consider the many factors that affect thyroid health, including iron levels, cortisol problems, TSH levels, and adrenal problems. Janie is passionate about her calling and I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about her perspective and experiences as an advocate for thyroid patients.
After the interview, I will follow-up on the key points of our conversation. I want you to consider the need for conducting high-quality studies and of the importance of understanding the many side effects and complications that may not be highlighted in patient-shared experiences. To do so, I will give you an overview of several studies regarding low TSH, each of which included a look at how low TSH levels can affect your body’s ability to manage free radicals, bone health, cardiovascular health, and total mortality rates. Once the facts are laid out, I will share my opinion on this important topic of thyroid disease and medication.
Key Takeaways: [:35] Today’s topic is the third of three segments on the topic of thyroid disease. [1:55] Introducing Janie Bowthorpe, who shares the health and medical experiences that led her to becoming a thyroid advocate. [5:23] The symptoms that led Janie to the diagnosis of thyroid disease only got worse over time, but she quickly she experienced a turnaround and stabilization once she started natural thyroid medication. [10:28] Janie’s calling to be an advocate for thyroid patients and a look at how her observations were reflected in large numbers of patients over time. [14:32] Defining ‘optimal doses’ in thyroid patients using dessicated thyroid means people feeling their best and staying that way. [20:27] Achieving optimal doses and identifying thyroid hormone resistance through patterns of groups of patients and genetic testing. [25:41] What are the concerns that come with TSH levels that are too low or too high? How do inadequate iron and cortisol problems play into these concerns? [30:43] Ferritin versus serum iron and considering the presence of inflammation and cortisol problems. [35:46] Are the benefits associated with TSH suppression worth the long-term health risks? [39:40] Studies that have disregarded adrenal problems may not be as telling as patient-shared experiences. [43:54] Wrapping up with Janie Bowthorpe and her testimony of the importance of patients listening to other patients. [45:57] Should you ignore your TSH? Understanding your TSH as your pituitary gland telling your thyroid to work, and a look at what patients have experienced in trying to optimize it’s levels. [48:47] My five criteria for reviewing evidence, and the importance of placing more weight on the evidence that is independent of the source it came from. [51:30] Understanding the treatment that thyroid patients have received from the medical community and a host of secondary problems that can contribute to feeling unwell despite thyroid stability. [54:08] What high-quality studies have been conducted to increase our understanding of what happens to people with low TSH levels? [59:02] Study results include redox pathways and the body’s antioxidant capacity, bone health as it relates to lumbar spine density and bone age, increase in inflammation, and increased mortality rates relative to decreasing TSH scores. [1:06:02] My recommendation for thyroid patients — based on the facts. [1:07:58] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? Contact me on Facebook or Instagram using #medicalmyths.

09 Dec 2019 | How Can a Plant Based Diet Heal Hashimoto’s? with Elena Wilkins | 00:49:17
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
On this episode we’re looking at plant-based options for improving the health of your thyroid. I’m joined by Elena Wilkins of 360 Impact Health to discuss the success she has had with overcoming hypothyroidism, pituitary adenoma, and infertility without medication. Instead, Elena has used healthy eating and lifestyle choices to overcome her symptoms and today she is healthier than ever before.
Elena not only shares her story but also shares hope for anyone who feels like they have exhausted their search to find the answers they need to live a healthier, fuller life. We talk about the importance of having low levels of iodine in your diet, the potentially dangerous effects of a paleo diet, and all of the points of both mental and physical health that are examined and healed as part of the Elena Wilkins diet. Elena’s advice is encouraging, and her story of healing is simply amazing. If you’ve felt like the options for healing that you’ve been presented with just aren’t for you, you’ll want to be sure to listen to my conversation with Elena Wilkins to restore your hope and help you recognize that a healthy, happy, disease free life really is within your reach.
Key Takeaways: [1:11] Today’s topic is healing your thyroid naturally, without medication and with a whole health approach. [2:58] Introducing Elena Wilkins, who shares her story of overcoming hypothyroidism and infertility with diet and exercise instead of medication. [9:34] The turning point in Elena’s story started with her husband’s daily chest pains and led to a search for answers. [12:11] The whole foods, plant based, low fat diet that reversed Elena’s hypothyroidism includes one key factor — low iodine. [15:19] The nearly 100-year-old study that proved that the skin iodine absorption test is completely inaccurate. [18:22] Will cutting out dairy and processed bread in a paleo diet result in too-low levels of iodine intake? [21:17] An overview of the Elena Wilkins diet, the success rate, and the specific physical and mental health indicators that are examined. [27:22] How does mental or physical abuse and stress affect the health of your thyroid? [30:05] The symptoms and cure for Graves disease in relation to the health of your thyroid. [34:00] Because the supplement market is not regulated like the medication market, multivitamins often contain a higher iodine content, and your thyroid suffers as a result. [38:47] Elena shares the final chapters of her transformation, and why she doesn’t have any regrets about the healthy lifestyle changes she has made. [41:39] Elena’s top tips for a simple whole foods diet include batch cooking — preparing a week’s worth of food at one time. [42:53] Advocating for yourself starts with asking for a second opinion, and a third opinion, and not stopping until you find the answers you are looking for. 26 Jun 2019 | Further Investigation of the Shocking Link Between Soy and Thyroid Disease with Anthony Dissen, MA, RDN | 01:04:34
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
On this episode we’re going to continue our examination of the link between soy and thyroid disease. I want you to consider the sum total of knowledge on this topic and the general scientific consensus of evidence from real human studies, not just the shocking results of one or two outlier studies. To help with the conversation I’m joined by Anthony Dissen, professor of public health at Stockton University. He is a nutritionist and is active in many non-profits in the cancer world, and is a scholar of plants and specifically soy.
Anthony offers an overview of the general misunderstandings about soy, how soy got its bad name, and why eating a meat-based diet does not equate to avoiding a plant-based diet. We talk about the dangers of eating any one food in excess and how the body works in healthy but non-intuitive ways. We take a look at the link between soy and GMOs, thyroid cancer, breast cancer, and menopause, and discuss what ideal soy consumption amounts should look like for both omnivore and plant-based diets. Anthony’s shares his favorite way to eat soy, and offers two of his favorite quick recipes. I will then wrap up our conversation by sharing some of the findings that I’ve discovered in the years that I have spent studying soy and its effect on the health of the human body.
Key Takeaways: [:35] Today’s topic is the second of three segments on the correlation between soy and thyroid disease. [1:48] Introducing Anthony Dissen, who shares my perspective on the general misunderstanding from the medical community and the population at large about soy and its effect on the body’s overall health. [6:11] When did soy start to get such a bad name? [9:48] Eating a meat-based diet does not mean that you are avoiding a soy-based diet — consider what animals are fed before they are butchered. [11:28] What is in soy formula for infants, and how is it affecting child development? [14:28] Examining the link between soy and thyroid disease, including iodine deficiency, dietary goitrogens and autoimmune diseases. [18:42] The danger of eating any one food in excess is the same for soy, flaxseed, bok choy, mustard seeds or kale, because of their common goitrogenic properties. [25:08] Cooked or raw? How to enjoy your vegetables while minimizing goitrogenic properties. [26:00] GMOs and soy — understanding the difference between soy produced for animal and human consumption. [27:40] Parameters for normal soy consumption, healthy sea vegetables and safe iodine content. [32:45] Soy and breast cancer — are there benefits of soy for reducing risk of recurrent breast cancer, and what exactly are phytoestrogens doing to our bodies? [37:51] Soy and menopause — how does soy protect and maintain the health of an aging body? [42:22] Human studies that have proven that antinutrients are a non-issue with soy consumption. [45:55] Anthony explains how increasing permeability could possibly be is a good thing. [49:02] What is the ideal amount of soy intake for a plant-based diet and an omnivore diet? [55:51] Is there any relevance between fermented and non-fermented soy? [58:15] The findings from my research on thyroid disease included three categories that I couldn’t explain away — soy formula with iodine, one study on siblings, and one study on hypothyroidism. [1:02:17] Wrapping up with Anthony — whether it’s soy food or not, any food that is being consumed in normal quantities can only be of benefit to your health. 11 May 2020 | Does Red Meat Cause Cancer? with Dr. Garth Davis | 00:52:38
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
Are you having a hard time determining if you have too much or too little protein in your diet? Too much protein means you might be dealing with potential disease risks, while too little protein presents the possible risk of changes to healthspan. Either way, the literature is often confusing and inconclusive and often leaves people with more questions than answers.
I’m joined today by Dr. Garth Davis, a bariatric surgeon, and author of Proteinaholic. Dr. Davis is an active member of the protein-based community and he has joined me to talk about the possible dangers of dietary protein and to share evidence-based truths about protein and how it might be affecting your health. We dive deep into the specifics of meta-analysis and epidemiology, how red meat really affects overall health, and the points of any study that you need to understand before accepting or rejecting its findings. We also take a look at the new lab-grown and plant-based meat movement that is quickly gaining popularity.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is animal protein — does it really affect your overall health and what are the actual risks of cancer for red meat eaters? [3:57] Dr. Davis shares a classic example of the disconnect between obesity and protein that he regularly experiences in his work. [5:47] Challenges that surface when trying to study the effects of protein on cancer, including correlations and meta-analysis in epidemiology. [11:02] Understanding the protein-inclusive diets of blue zone populations and the misunderstandings that are often associated with mechanisms of action. [17:12] A strong argument comes from a combination of high mechanistic action, high rates of epidemiological evidence, and meta-analysis, but what comes after that? [22:03] Key points that have to be studied and understood in order to correctly interpret a meta-analysis. [24:38] The features of red meat, fish, and poultry, and the details of leading healthy diet studies, including the PURE study and the Adventist health study. [30:20] The overall characteristics of healthy patterned eating behavior often include eating poultry and fish, and Dr. Davis shares an example of the results from various studies and offers his overall advice for a healthier diet plan. [35:47] How diet messages are received by a population is just as important as the details of the diet itself, but too often the public latches onto the wrong details and starts making poor health choices as a result. [40:12] Dr. Davis offers his viewpoint on veganism, the clean meat movement and how both affect the environment and human health. [47:50] The increased popularity of plant-based foods just may be proving that meat is in no way good for your heart health. [52:05] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? On this episode we cover what the best ways to fuel your active body and your active muscles are. Do you have to choose between carbs and fat, and do you know which one is better for fueling your body? Athletes aren’t the only people that need to consider the best way to fuel an active body. Choosing the right fuel makes a big difference in overall health for everyone. I’m joined today by Matt Fitzgerald, endurance sports coach, nutritionist and author of over 20 books. His work with pro level and Olympic athletes has given him superior experience and knowledge of what works best for some of the best performing individuals in the world when it comes to fats, carbs, healthy diet, and the importance of food variety. Even if you aren’t a high performing athlete, you surely want to have more energy, get more out of your health, and figure out what the best diet is to achieve your goals.
On this podcast we’re covering five major tips that will help you make the best food choices for higher energy and a healthier body, including one that I can guarantee you’ve never heard before! From the best source of energy to burn quickly to the importance of choosing high quality foods, Matt’s experience and knowledge will inspire you to start making better food choices for your body today. We cover everything from the keto diet to food favorites of elite athletes around the world and how you can apply their food choices into your everyday diet. If you’ve ever felt like you have to choose between enjoying the food you eat or eating the right foods, you need to listen to my conversation with Matt Fitzgerald.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is the best way to fuel your active body — is it fats, carbs, or a combination of the two? [2:30] Introducing Matt Fitzgerald, who responds to a letter I received from a listener who wrote in for advice regarding the keto diet and her thyroid. [4:43] Which diet really works for world class athletes? Some experiences that have shaped Matt’s views on the best way to fuel an active body. [9:18] Matt explains why the keto diet is a risk that is not worth taking for elite athletes, including Olympic cycling medalist Georgia Gould. [10:57] Is fat a superior fuel? Matt explains why the denser content of fat does not make up for the inefficient way that it is metabolized. [14:16] Lasting energy versus fast energy — how you can balance sustained energy with the more quickly spent energy that comes from sugars. [16:46] Energy to burn — whether it comes from fat or carbs — at a higher capacity is the main goal of high performing athletes — just look at the winners of the Boston marathon. [20:31] Are elite athletes genetically superior to everyone else? [23:22] Everyday energy and fueling exercise is important for the health of everyone, not just elite athletes. [26:25] Raw talent will only take an elite athlete so far — the next level of world class success requires raising the diet bar. [30:26] A higher quality diet is going to yield higher quality results every time, and just because something works well doesn’t mean something else isn’t going to work even better. [33:40] The Endurance Diet’s recurrent themes and habits from carb-eating endurance athletes from around the world. [36:10] Eat everything — different types of foods check off different boxes and a healthy diet leaves no stone uncovered. [39:54] Diet Cult and a look at why most fad diets are based on restrictions unreasonably applied to foods that humans have been eating for centuries. [45:02] Eat quality — meaning that if a food makes you healthier, then it is high quality, regardless of what the food contains. [48:56] Eat a carb centered diet — include high quality carbohydrate rich foods in almost all of your meals and snacks. [50:50] Eat enough — don’t worry about counting calories or tracking your intake as much as you are making sure that you are eating the right amount of food. [55:24] Individualization — work with what works best for your body and stop eating foods that don’t improve your overall health. [1:00:36] Matt explains the value of choosing foods that you like to eat and keeping high-quality favorites in your diet. [1:05:03] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? 28 Sep 2020 | Is ALS Reversible? with Dr. Shelena Lalji | 00:52:38
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Every 90 minutes someone in the United States loses their battle with ALS. A myth by absence, and often left undiagnosed, neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS leave a devastating wake. Common neurodegenerative diseases include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and today’s topic, ALS or Lou Gerhig’s disease. The diagnosis is often considered a death sentence, and my guest today is working hard to change that. I’m joined by Dr. Shelena Lalji, founder of the Dr. Shel Wellness and Aesthetic Center, OB/GYN, and ALS expert by both her personal experience and professional mission. Dr. Shel shares the indirect, unclear, and all-consuming journey that eventually led her husband to receive the devastating ALS diagnosis. She highlights some of the greatest myths surrounding neurodegenerative diseases, including root causes and the triggering events that can cause the disease to manifest itself. She also shares the studies that offer hope for slowing down, halting, or perhaps even reversing the effects of ALS. If you or any of your loved ones have been touched by the shocking diagnosis of neurodegenerative disease, I know that my conversation with Dr. Shelena Lalji will offer the direction you need and greater hope for healing.
Key Takeaways: [1:11] Today’s topic is the myths surrounding neurodegenerative diseases. [2:08] Dr. C introduces Dr. Shelena Lalji, who has been personally affected by the quiet destruction of neurodegenerative diseases. [6:00] The moment that Dr. Shel’s husband told her he has ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. [9:00] The devastating process that neurodegenerative diseases take patients and their family’s through. [10:05] ALS tends to be more prevalent in military personnel and athletics, and other startling statistics about this often undiagnosed and deadly disease. [14:24] The realities of the emotional, physical, and financial burdens that come with providing the advanced care that is required to live with ALS. [21:30] Dr. Shel shares the exhaustive, frustrating, and sometimes unnecessary testing steps that must be taken to receive an ALS diagnosis. [27:10] Understanding the root cause of neurodegenerative diseases may not be as important of a step in curing the disease as identifying the triggering events that make the disease manifest itself. [34:30] Dr. Shel’s recommendations for resources include connection with a functional medicine practitioner who can identify root causes, including gut health, viral strains, mold exposure, heavy metals, and cavitations. [39:36] Understanding the emotional, mental and spiritual toxins that create ‘dis-ease’ in the body, and how that is affecting your overall health. [41:20] Dr. C shares his views on the non-physical stressors and trauma and the damage they can do as triggers for chronic conditions and more. [42:05] Dr. Shel shares the various elements of her neurodegenerative protocol for supporting emotional release, including sunlight exposure, adequate sleep, deliberate meditation, and detoxification with the PK protocol. [44:06] Is ALS ever reversible? Dr. Shel says yes, and shares the report of over 40 ALS reversals at Duke University, and the mind-body healing component of each reversal. [48:31] The cocktail of therapies that will be required to slow down, halt, or even reverse the effects of ALS will address the root causes of the disease. 26 Oct 2020 | The Latest Research: How Red Meat Can Improve Your Health with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon | 00:42:01
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Should doctors make massive health recommendations based on weak evidence? It seems strange, but one of the most controversial points in a healthy diet is also one of the most essential — protein has been villainized for too long and is the topic of today’s myth-busting episode. I’m joined today by return-podcast guest Gabrielle Lyon, a fellowship-trained physician and expert in nutritional science and geriatrics to discuss the facts about protein. We talk about the data surrounding the claims that red meat contributes to obesity, is linked to cancer, and has a negative environmental impact. Dr. Lyon shares the truth about protein, including ideal protein intake amounts and the reason that our bodies will continue to crave calories until our protein needs are met.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is red meat and the dangers, data, and environmental impact surrounding it. [2:25] The meta-analysis that proved no one actually needs to reduce the 2 ounces of red meat they eat each day. [5:45] Relative and absolute risk as it is associated with eating red meat, and the dangers of making health recommendations on weak evidence. [9:17] The health benefits of eating red meat, one of the top OG superfoods, include B-12, zinc, and iron, and the need for randomized controlled trials in diet recommendations. [12:56] The history of humans consuming red meat for the last 2.5 billion years and the big picture for cancer risks associated with animal proteins. [17:50] What is the actual environmental impact of our dietary choices when consuming red meat? [20:00] The moral duty doctors have to share the truth and debunk the myths surrounding red meat. [24:02] Dr. C. dives deep into the information surrounding linoleic acid and proteins in dietary intake. [26:39] The biggest issue that Dr. Lyon sees in her clinic is not excess red meat intake specifically, but excess caloric intake in general. She offers guidelines for ideal protein and overall dietary intake to achieve optimal health. [32:50] The benefits of food tracking to set a baseline for your dietary needs. [35:50] Do we just need to eat more vegetables to achieve optimal health? Our bodies will continue craving calories until we meet our protein needs, and Dr. Lyon explains why. [38:44] Dr. Lyon concludes the interview with a simple stance — there is no evidence that red meat is bad. [41:28] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? So many are asking what product is safe to use. Which ingredients to look out for? Is there a list of safe products? And the difficulty is that because they could change what's in the product, today can be different in the coming weeks or months and we can't keep up with all of them.

18 Jun 2019 | Do You Really Need Vaccines to Stay Healthy? Parts 1 & 2 with Dr. Max Cohen, N.D. | 01:34:19
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
On this episode we’re talking about one of the most controversial topics in the medical field today — vaccines. Are vaccines safe and do you really need them to stay healthy? I’m joined by Dr. Max Cohen, naturopathic physician and passionate advocate for vaccines as an essential part of whole health natural care. Dr. Cohen has spent years studying the medical facts and dispelling the fiction behind vaccines. Today we’re diving right into the controversy of vaccines and answering the hard questions that seem to be on everyone’s mind. What are vaccines made up of, and how exactly do they interact with the body’s immune system? Is there value in administering vaccines on an altered schedule? How effective is the flu shot? Does the MMR vaccine cause autism? Is there any danger associated with the HPV vaccine?
The information you will hear on this episode is designed to help educate you about vaccines so that you can act with confidence, and not with fear. Still, I am fully committed to sharing both sides of the story with you, and you may be surprised when you hear the vaccine-hesitant view of this conversation. On the second half of this podcast we will look at the vaccine controversy from the other side. Is speaking out against vaccines considered an exercise of freedom of speech? Does personal belief ever outweigh the common good of the public? I share experiences both from my own childhood and with vaccinating my own children, and explain how these experiences have helped to form the strong opinion that I have about vaccines today. Join me as we consider both sides of this critical health debate — to educate yourself and to be inspired to act confidently on your knowledge.
Key Takeaways: [:35] Today’s topic is vaccines — are they safe? Do you really need them to stay healthy? A look at the facts on today’s podcast will help you make an informed decision about vaccinations. [2:20] Introducing Dr. Max Cohen, N. D., who shares his experience working with the development of the tuberculosis vaccine and the effect it has had on his career, his research, and his interactions with concerned patients. [7:30] A look at the controversy and history of vaccines shows that concerns over the safety of vaccines is nothing new, but that doesn’t make them any less safe than they have ever been. [9:47] Is there any health value in administering vaccines on an altered, spaced out schedule? Dr. Cohen explores the potential physical and mental side effects of delaying vaccines. [16:03] Are you wondering whether or not you should get a flu shot this year? Consider these potential risks and side effects and weigh them against the benefits of this low-drama vaccine. [22:12] Vaccine reporting systems — who can file a report about a vaccine-related incident and what you can expect will happen after you do. [24:49] A look at the numbers — the risks of not getting a flu vaccination based on studies, complications, and annual deaths related to influenza. [30:30] Do MTHFR variations and other genetic polymorphisms increase the risk of a negative reaction to the flu vaccine? [34:55] High quality research has already answered our next question — the MMR vaccine does not cause autism. Dr. Cohen details the studies and data that proves why. [39:41] Consider the transparency that has come with vaccines from the industry, researchers, and pharmaceutical companies that all stand to benefit from pushing potentially unsafe vaccines. [42:47] The truth about administering vaccines in increased frequencies from past generations and a look at concerns about autoimmune diseases and the effects of vaccines, including the HPV vaccine. [48:38] Understanding causation versus correlation — and why treatments administered reactively seem to work better than treatments that are administered proactively. [51:33] What exactly goes into a vaccine? Addressing your fears about aluminum, formaldehyde, thimerosal, environmental toxins and preservatives. [1:01:02] Gathering medical information may be easier than ever, but that doesn’t mean that what you’re reading online is accurate or what is best for your health. [1:07:26] Wrapping up and connecting with Dr. Cohen. [1:08:38] My experience with trying to find a vaccine-hesitant speaker, and the importance of preserving freedom of speech in the face of fear. [1:15:17] Understanding why personal choice does not outweigh the public good, especially in matters of communicable diseases. [1:21:37] Breaking vaccines down — how do vaccines work and which elements of a vaccine are actually working with the body’s immune system to protect the body against illnesses? [1:26:27] The considerations of overcoming fear, probability, causation and correlation when understanding the side effects of vaccines. [1:31:00] Bad things in tiny amounts are actually good for you — what do broccoli and vaccines have in common? [1:33:45] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? 16 Sep 2019 | Do You Have Lyme Disease? Parts 1 & 2 with With Dr. Tom Moorcroft | 01:04:28
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
On this episode we’re diving into one of the most misunderstood diagnoses in the medical field — Lyme disease. Do you think you might have Lyme disease? If you’ve been experiencing symptoms that you haven’t been able to explain or are wondering if Lyme disease might be the diagnosis you’ve been waiting for, then you need to listen to my conversation with Dr. Tom Moorcroft. Dr. Moorcroft is a world renowned expert on Lyme disease who practices osteopathic medicine and focuses his work on finding the true causes behind the symptoms of those who may be suffering from Lyme disease.
In the first part of this episode Dr. Moorcroft will differentiate between patients who may not have Lyme disease but are experiencing it’s symptoms from those who will get the diagnosis and do need to seek further Lyme disease treatment. He’ll answer some of the hard questions about the topic — can Lyme disease be solved? What is the number one symptom that points to Lyme disease over any other symptoms? At what point in treatment can patients reasonably expect to see positive changes in their symptoms? And what is the best approach to your health that will nearly guarantee a fighting chance for your body to heal from this disease? Dr. Moorcroft has seen countless cases of Lyme disease, as well as too many misdiagnoses, in his work and shares many insights into the knowledge that makes him a clear authority on the topic.
In the second part of this episode I will follow up on the conversation I had with Dr. Moorcroft, including research and reference checks, a look at the likelihood of contracting Lyme disease in a non-endemic area, and a list of possible other diseases that your symptoms may indicate you are possibly dealing with instead. I’ve created a flowchart to help you think through the process of further pursuing or rejecting a Lyme disease diagnosis, and I am confident that you will have a greater understanding of the probability of being diagnosed with Lyme disease after listening to this conversation.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is Lyme disease — it’s symptoms, causes, and too-often misunderstood diagnosis. [2:32] Introducing Tom Moorcroft, who differentiates patients who may not have Lyme disease but are experiencing it’s symptoms from those who will get the diagnosis and need to seek further Lyme disease treatment. [8:05] Dr. Moorcroft explains the importance of prioritizing the multiple stresses that are affecting your health before you begin to treat for Lyme disease. [13:00] How likely is it for someone without classic exposure to Lyme disease to be diagnosed with it? [18:06] A look at accuracy and the CDC required time frame for Lyme disease testing and what that can mean for altering effective treatments. [22:03] Are chronic antimicrobial treatments helpful for potential Lyme disease patients? Dr. Moorcroft explains the effects of a chronic treatment approach and why antimicrobial herbals are even more effective for many of his patients. [27:33] At what point should a patient stop thinking they have Lyme disease based on test results and symptoms? Dr. Moorcroft shares his standard approach to treatment when there are questions marks in the diagnosis. [31:25] The danger of assuming that you have Lyme disease, and the importance of seeking out a proper diagnosis no matter what your symptoms are. [35:18] Wrapping up with Dr. Moorcroft, who shares his personal experience with battling Lyme disease and the three key changes he made to his lifestyle in order to let healing happen. [38:00] Examining Lyme disease further — are the symptoms alone enough to qualify for a diagnosis of Lyme disease? [41:48] Follow up on the references that were discussed with Dr. Moorcroft regarding testing time frames, false negatives, and alternative testing options. [45:18] Ignoring a diagnosis altogether — how effective would antimicrobial treatments be for someone that is showing the symptoms of Lyme disease? [46:22] Dr. C examines the likelihood of being diagnosed with Lyme disease if you have the symptoms without a tick bite or a rash living in a non-endemic area and having received a false negative test result. [52:42] A walk through of the potential Lyme disease diagnosis flow chart. [54:50] What is the likelihood of having a co-infection along with Lyme disease and what would be the appropriate course of action? [55:39] Potential alternate diagnosis options for someone that has experienced Lyme disease symptoms for a long period of time but has not received the diagnosis. [59:25] Seeking treatment at your low point means that your reactions are almost guaranteed to make you feel better almost immediately. [1:03:54] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? 22 Aug 2023 | Marta’s story - Dangers of thyroid meds when overprescribed. | 00:43:58
In this episode of Medical Myths, Legends, and Fairy Tales, we have the pleasure of chatting with Marta, a behavior change facilitator who shared her journey battling hypothyroidism. The thyroid's primary purpose is to control the body's metabolic rate, which is the speedometer for energy conversion. If it goes haywire, it can affect the entire body system. We're talking about everything from sluggishness to skyrocketing energy levels. This is what exactly happened to Marta; she went through all the hallmark symptoms (breakouts, weight gain, renal change, depression, anxiety) of a person suffering from thyroid disease. While on desiccated thyroid medication, she learned through the discussion the importance of maintaining the correct medication dosage, eating healthy, and showing the body the TLC it deserves.
Marta's incredible tale and insights will have you rethinking everything you thought you knew about thyroids. There's so much misinformation about thyroid conditions that it's enough to make your head spin! Understanding the ins and outs of thyroid treatment is crucial, so let's dive right in!
Key Takeaways:
(0:00) Episode Overview (0:37) Introduction to Marta, a behavior change facilitator. (1:54) The story of Marta’s journey with thyroid disease. (3:51) Diagnosis of hypothyroidism, experiencing the hallmark symptoms, and initial treatment. (5:53) The ‘Spoonie Concept’ for managing energy and the body’s resources. (7:18) Suffering from depression due to declining health. (8:06) Initial benefits observed from the desiccated thyroid medication. (8:52) Coping with weight gain, fluid retention, and overall electrolyte management. (10:08) Desiccated thyroid for ten years, followed by a brain injury. (14:38) Marta’s realization leading to her tapering off desiccated thyroid. (16:13) Dr. Christianson’s anecdote about a patient who experienced hyperthyroidism. (18:56) Discussion on the correct dosage for desiccated thyroid. (20:01) Dr. Christianson’s interpretation of Marta’s dependency on desiccated thyroid: the cycle of feeling better and raising the dose until unbearable risks manifest. (22:38) The history of testing thyroid levels. (23:44) High mortality from heart disease among people on thyroid treatment around the 1930s to 1970s. (24:53) Marta’s reintegration of certain types of foods following reading Dr. Christianson’s book. (27:43) The pros and cons of both basic medication and overtreatment. (28:45) The body’s need for a TSH. (30:40) Taking care of your body and eating well to regain function. (32:41) Successfully deprescribing and tapering from medication. (33:54) Discussion on the T3 and T4 levels while on medication and in a healthy state. (36:48) Misconceptions on the correlation of TSH and T3 levels. (39:27) T3 levels that are continuously high as risk factors for both breast cancer and diabetes. (39:48) Impact of elevated T3 levels on renal frequency. (41:36) Relationship between the thyroid hormones, medication, and body weight. (42:42) Discussion wrap-up (43:03) Closing statement
Marta is not just your average person. She's a Spoonie, a mental health advocate, and a behavior change facilitator in employee wellness and healthcare. Marta sustained a traumatic brain injury years ago, leaving her with cognitive issues. During her recovery, she realized she was trapped in what the scientists refer to as the Intention Behavior Gap– the place between knowing what to do and actually taking action. Driven by a passion for discovering methods for bridging this gap, she embarked on a transformative journey involving the guidance of experts in the medical field. She proves that change doesn't have to be complicated or boring—it can be easy and FUN!
When Marta isn't busy discussing behavior change, you might catch her doing something silly at the Second City's amateur improv classes and hunting down the best gelato in town!
"...I had this really horrific negative experience and I still wasn't hearing them [the doctors]... and I had the same thing happen to me the following year. That's when it shook me...my mental health is more important than whatever other things I'm afraid of."

19 Jun 2019 | Can your breast implants cause autoimmune disease? With Dr. Anthony Youn, M.D. | 00:34:49
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
On this episode we’re talking about the connection between breast implants and thyroid disease. Awareness of Breast Implant Illness (BII) is growing in the medical community, and today we’re going to answer some of the most pressing questions surrounding this topic. Who is at a greater risk for developing an illness after implants? Is implant removal the only solution for those with Hashimoto’s disease? If you already have implants what are your options? There are many questions that have yet to be answered on this topic, but that didn’t stop me from diving into the literature to find out all I could about this controversial topic to share with you on today’s podcast.
I’m joined by America’s holistic plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn, who performs up to 150 breast augmentation surgeries each year. We discuss the quality of research that is currently being conducted to help identify the correlation between breast augmentation and certain autoimmune diseases and what options are available to women who have already had implants. You’ll want to hear the advice that Dr. Youn gives to all women who are considering getting implants and why the one test that tells whether you will have implant complications may not be worth it’s $4,000 price tag.
Key Takeaways: [:33] Today’s topic is the connection between breast implants and thyroid disease. [1:55] Introducing Dr. Youn, who shares how his education and training taught him to view breast and thyroid disease issues. [3:51] An overview of the main confusion points around silicone breast implants, including the 1992 implant ban, FDA studies and subsequent ban lift in 2006, and the recent increase in stories from women suffering from illness and disease after undergoing silicone breast augmentation. [6:15] What questions are being researched in breast implant studies and who is funding these studies? Dr. Youn argues that the studies are not getting good answers because they’re not asking the right questions. [8:30] Studies that do support a connection between breast implants and illness, and a look at what Dr. Youn has seen in his own practice. [12:32] Dr. Youn’s recommendations to women who are prone to autoimmune diseases and are considering breast augmentation. [14:20] Have you already had breast implants? A look at the health risks versus benefits for removal of implants. [19:29] Understanding the correlation between ALCL cancer and textured or smooth silicone breast implants. [22:44] A look at the specific data surrounding Hashimoto's disease in relation to implants. [26:56] Is the silicon antibody test worth it’s $4,000 price tag? [29:10] The emotional aspect of breast implants and how it plays into making an educated, well-informed decision when considering implants. [33:26] The importance of educating yourself and making sure your decisions are backed by science, not emotion, in helping women make the right decision for their health. 28 Mar 2024 | The Importance of Iodine for Thyroid Health | 00:14:00
In the latest podcast episode of the Thyroid Beginner Series, Dr. Christianson discusses the importance of iodine for your thyroid health. He compares it to the mantra in real estate of "location, location, location," with "iodine, iodine, iodine" being the first three things you need for your thyroid to function correctly.
Dr. C explains how our genes can affect how we process iodine, which is essential for thyroid health. Some people's genes work better in low-iodine environments, while others work better in high-iodine environments. Interestingly, people who are prone to thyroid disease may have a lower tolerance for iodine, making them more vulnerable to triggers, even at normal iodine levels.
The podcast explores how iodine interacts with thyroid hormones and autoimmunity, and the delicate balance required for optimal thyroid function. Dr. C simplifies iodine requirements and stresses the importance of maintaining a safe intake, especially for those susceptible to thyroid issues.
As supported by research, Dr. C stresses the effectiveness of regulating iodine intake in reversing thyroid disease. He provides practical insights into assessing iodine intake and offers valuable resources for monitoring and optimizing iodine levels. He also emphasizes iodine's essential role in thyroid health and encourages listeners to check out his Thyroid Reset Diet for comprehensive guidance. With a better understanding of iodine and its implications, individuals like you can take proactive steps toward improving thyroid function and overall well-being.
Discover the secrets of managing your thyroid health journey with confidence! Dr. C is here to help you understand the benefits of iodine and how it can improve your overall well-being. Make sure you catch this chance to take control of your health and feel your best!
Key Takeaways:
(00:02) Introduction (00:34) The importance of iodine in thyroid function (00:58) Genetic factors and iodine metabolism (01:30) Adaptation to low or high iodine environments (02:10) Iodine intolerance and the role of genes (02:36) Formation of thyroid hormones and iodine's role in hormone production (03:50) Immune response to excess iodine (04:16) Difference of iodine levels for children and adults (05:13) Recommended iodine intake (05:51) Role of sodium iodide simporter (06:38) Presence of iodine in foods (07:09) Iodine in thyroid medications (07:40) Having tolerance and sensitivity to iodine (07:56) Metabolism of iodine inside the thyroid (08:10) Looking at iodine intake with www.iodineinventory.com (08:52) Iodine tests: helpful or not? (09:37) Effects of regulating iodine intake with the Thyroid Reset Diet (11:36) Importance of diet inventory (13:00) Transition to maintenance stage in diet (13:15) Conclusion (13:27) Outro
“Getting too much iodine is just like getting too little iodine. So it's like a lot of things. It's about balance, [you know] like the Goldilocks and the three bears. It's not too hot, not too cold. Thankfully, our bodies are so frugal and so efficient with iodine that getting too little is pretty much never a problem.”

One of the greatest gifts we have in this life is the gift of hope and purpose. Without it, life can feel like going through the motions. That is how Forrest felt when he was in his early 20s, feeling fat, sick, and depressed, it was even while getting his doctorate in chiropractic he was told "this is how life was". It wasn't until a friend asked him to attend a seminar on nutrition did he get his first exposure to the world of wellness. From that time on Forrest has coached and impacted thousands of lives towards better health and hopefully a better purpose.

20 Jul 2020 | The Dangers of Bathing With Salt | 00:21:33
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Is it possible to avoid iodine entirely? The concerns about iodine, especially for those with thyroid disease, are not limited to what we put in our mouths. Many people try to avoid iodine by eliminating it from their diet, but there are other sources of iodine that may be negatively affecting your thyroid levels. Beauty and skincare products with high iodine levels, especially those containing seaweed, sea salts, and kelp, may also contribute to dangerously high TSH levels. It can be hard to know what to avoid when limiting your iodine intake, and my goal here is to separate the facts from the myths. Today I’m joined by my brilliant integrative health colleagues for a panel discussion about iodine. We start with a case study and then dive into the concerns of iodine from any source, including skincare products, cosmetics, neti pots, and medications. If you and your doctor have been unsuccessful in normalizing your TSH levels and you’re not sure what to try next, this panel discussion is one that you won’t want to miss.
Key Takeaways: [1:07] Today’s topic is iodine, the various sources it comes from, and how it affects your thyroid. [2:34] Dr. Raquel Espinol shares the case of a patient who was bathing in dead sea salts and had dangerously high TSH levels. [3:38] Skin products that use iodine dense compounds, including polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), can increase the absorption rates of iodine up to 4.5%. [5:47] The FDA has banned topical skin antiseptics from containing iodine because it is considered a safety hazard. [7:09] Is there an iodine hazard in your mascara? What about night cream or hair conditioners? Dr. C breaks down the numbers to explain the true danger of various levels of exposure. [9:24] Dr. Linda Khoshaba shares a case study of a patient whose thyroid has become less stable as she has increased her use of an anti-aging skin cream containing seaweed. [13:12] Dr. C shares a list of ingredients to be wary of, including ammonium iodide, potassium iodide, sodium iodide, and iodoform. [13:52] Dr. Guillermo Ruiz explains the dangers of using a neti pot with nebulized iodine to cure sinus infections. [14:50] What is the difference between iodide and iodine? Dr. C explains and cautions against overuse of either to protect against thyroid toxicity. [15:32] Dr. Roz Ranon warns of the dangerous iodine levels that can be found in anti-aging products that include seaweed, algae or kelp. [17:09] Dr. Khashaba highlights the potential iodine levels in medications used to balance blood pressure or hyperthyroidism. [18:22] A comparison of serum versus urinary iodine levels shows that there is not a linear relationship between the two, and one of these two is much more difficult for your body to eliminate. [20:10] Dr. C wraps up the discussion on iodine and suggests a safe and effective kitchen product you might want to move into your bathroom today. [21:00] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? This is not the only thing but was a major driver for my source of fatigue. So I was just kind of piecing things together, like what would I do as a provider for myself?"
In this episode, join Patricia as she shares her journey with thyroid cancer and how it has impacted her approach to practicing medicine. She also explores her mission to promote public awareness of thyroid health and resilience through her clinic, The Integrative NP. Don't miss out on her insightful story!

“Just get over it” might be the worst possible advice someone can hear after suffering through a major life crisis. Trauma can be a major source of chronic symptoms, but too often it is misunderstood and left unresolved, resulting in prolonged health problems and unnecessary suffering.

01 Oct 2021 | Top Myths About Carbs and Weight Gain With Dr. Stephan Guyenet | 01:08:29
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
Do you feel like your cravings are out of control? Are you worried that the sugar in carbs and fructose is sending your insulin on a roller coaster that is the culprit behind your weight gain? And why is it that the amount and types of food we intend to consume rarely line up with our actual dietary intake? I know how frustrating it can be to change your dietary plan and continue to fail in your attempt to lose weight. And while there are limitations to the idea that carbs are the culprit behind weight gain, there are some truths that I want to make sure you are aware of as well.
I’m joined today by Dr. Stephan Guyenet, scientist, author of The Hungry Brain, and creator of the Red Pen Reviews website to discuss the facts and myths behind our cravings and our instincts. Dr. Guyenet explains the role that carbs play in our health and weight loss (or gain) and offers insights into the reasons that all too often, we eat more than we intended to. He sheds light on the best way to sort out the highest quality information available in the myriad of health books and offers some simple and very doable ways that anyone can retrain their brain to crave the foods that will optimize health and minimize cravings, starting today.
Key Takeaways: [1:08] Today’s topic is the relationship between carbs, sugar and weight gain. [2:27] Dr. Guyenet dives right into the carbohydrate-insulin hypothesis as an explanation that humans too often eat more than they planned to. [7:22] Do carbs really cause a net accumulation of fat in your body? Dr. Guyenet says no and explains why a low-carb diet may or may not result in successful weight-loss. [9:50] Understanding the insulin and brain-related studies that show genetic differences between people with higher and lower levels of body fat. [16:23] What are some of the alternative reasons that we eat more than we want to? Dr. Guyenet examines homeo- and non-homeostatic eating options including energy needs, proximity to food, satisfaction levels, and social situations. [20:24] Is there one magical switch in the brain that can regulate the mechanisms that trigger hunger and encourage fatness? GLP-1 drugs may be the answer to overcoming the brain mechanisms to achieve effective weight loss. [26:48] How have obesity and weight loss standards shifted over the last few decades? Calorie intake, access to food, outsourcing food preparation and variety of foods all play a role. [33:50] The American diet never really went low-fat, and we’re eating more processed, high-calorie foods than ever on top of that. [37:50] The brain is always looking for the best deal, even with caloric intake. Your brain will always crave an easily accessible mix of carbs and fats, even if it’s not the healthiest choice. [40:42] Will focusing on less processed foods result in durable changes in your overall health? Dr. Guyenet details some of the studies and diets that compare weight loss against calorie intake with processed and unprocessed foods. [45:42] Common misconceptions consumers have surrounding the durability of the calorie intake model. Do you really need to count calories to lose weight? [50:41] Will cutting 3,500 calories from your diet each week result in losing one pound of weight each week? Dr. Guyenet says no and explains why. [57:31] Red Pen Reviews is a resource that will evaluate the quality of content in diet and health books so that you’re not misled in your weight loss efforts. [1:07:36] Dr. Guyenet highlights the importance of avoiding overeating by consuming food that is satisfying and filling but not hyper-palatable. [1:09:52] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? 02 Sep 2019 | Which Lectins Are the Most Dangerous? with David Katz, MD | 01:03:35
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
On this episode we’re discussing lectins, the naturally occurring proteins that are found in most plants. Are they dangerous? Which ones are the most dangerous? What do you do about high lectin foods that are otherwise healthy? Lectins are a hot topic in today’s health conversations and the research seems to be both confusing and inconclusive. Joining me to break down this controversial topic is Dr. David Katz, author and founder of the Preventive Research Center. He has a strong background in public health and a solid understanding of how to weigh medical evidence accurately. He has joined me today to share his research-based opinions about the benefits and risks of keeping lectins in your diet.
In addition to our conversation about lectins we are going even deeper to look at the crucial importance of valuing research over opinion, the danger of allowing science to overcome common sense. We take a look at the benefits and risks of following current fad diets and the long-term implications of the clean meat movement. Dr. Katz also shares some insights into the books, initiatives and apps that he has developed to encourage greater health today. This conversation is about so much more than just lectins — it’s about the long-term effects of the health decisions that you make every day, and how you can know that you’re making the best decisions that will add years to your health and health to your years.
Key Takeaways: [:35] Today’s topic is lectins — exactly how dangerous they are and what you should do about them in your diet. [1:55] Introducing David Katz, who offers an overview of lectins and where you can find them in your diet. [4:20] Looking at lectins with logic — research has proven that people who eat more legumes, fruits, vegetables, and grains have better health than those who don’t. [8:00] Lectin research and data that has been gathered has shown that lectins can bind red blood cells and slow the effects of cancer. [10:37] An overview of Dr. Katz’s new book The Truth About Food includes an in-depth look at the benefits and risks of lectins in your diet. [15:11] The importance of applying a fine lens filter when considering the benefit-to-risk ratio of any medical decision. [16:17] Dr. Katz’s five quantitative approaches to decision-making CARE — clinical applications of research evidence — include efficacy, safety, quality, what else is there for this condition? And patient preference. [20:12] Similarities between the Gundry lectin study and the parachute study and why you should be leery of both. [26:02] Why have food and nutrition succumbed to dogma and the domains of science? Consider the benefits reaped by big food, big pharma, big media, and big publishing companies. [32:12] The modern day threats to our hard-wired brains are coming at us in slow motion and with long-term effects. [34:50] What does the ketogenic diet have in common with cholera and a cocaine binge? They can all help you lose weight quickly with no regard to long-term health goals. [38:42] Natural science and the importance of being both responsible about the use of scientific evidence and responsive to patient needs when evidence is lacking. [40:51] Why the things that matter most will never be proven in RCTs, hierarchies of evidence, and how to understand what is true. [44:17] The usefulness of evidence threshold pathway mapping and the ultimate purpose that it serves. [46:15] Dr. Katz shares his opinion on the clean meat movement, from intake levels and sustainability to exploring meat alternatives. [49:47] What are the health effects of clean meat foods and what is the net environmental impact of producing synthetic meats? [51:23] Dr. Katz introduces Diet ID, a diet mapping app that captures the overall footprint and assessment of a diet. [55:29] Wrapping up the questions that we have discussed on this episode and the value of research that will give us the answers we need. [1:02:27] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? 22 Jun 2020 | Do Conventional Medications Work for Depression? with Dr. Irving Kirsch | 00:59:27
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Are antidepressants harmful? Do their side effects outweigh their benefits? Should you avoid using them except in the most critical cases? The answers to these questions only matter if the medications you’re taking actually work. And, particularly in the case of psychotherapy drugs, the answer is not always a clear one. I’m joined today by Dr. Irving Kirsch, associate director of the Program of Placebo Studies at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kirsch has spent years researching the true effect of placebos on health and healing, and I know you’re going to find his findings just as shocking as I did. We discuss the duration of effectiveness of placebos, the potential danger of nocebos, and the potential future of medicine and healing. Whether you are looking for alternatives to medications with potentially negative side effects or just want to further your understanding of the power of placebos, this is one medical myth-busting episode you won’t want to miss.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is the effect of antidepressant medications relative to the placebo effect. [2:31] Dr. C introduces Dr. Irving Kirsch, who explains the origins of his findings on placebo effects in the treatment of depression and the studies he ran to reach these conclusions. [8:12] Companies are required to show that medications are more effective than placebos, but they are allowed to run any number of studies to obtain the findings they are looking for. [10:40] The numerical relevance of the numbers from Dr. Kirsch’s findings and the effects that both patients and doctors experienced with the placebos and the actual drugs. [18:44] The duration of the placebo effect can last for years in patients suffering from depression, asthma, Parkinson's disease, allergies, digestive issues, and more. [21:51] The physiological and subjective changes that take place with the placebo effect are all very real, as are the side effects of the nocebo effect. [25:32] Dr. Kirsch offers an overview of the research that went into his new book and the policies that should be changed as a result of his findings. [31:47] A look at effective non-drug treatments for depression include physical exercise, psychotherapy, acupuncture, Omega-3 supplements, yoga, and homeopathy. [34:31] The effectiveness of open placebo trials in which patients know that they are being given a placebo and the necessary explanation that must be given in order for it to work. [40:35] What you need to do if your antidepressant medication is not working and it is posing negative side effects. [43:43] Dr. Kirsch shares the experiences he has had as a result of sharing his findings in The Emperor's New Drugs, including placebo surgery, injections, and pills. [49:41] The color, size, quantity and price tag of placebo pills all influence their effectiveness. [51:11] The most surprising findings that Dr. Kirsch has discovered relative to the placebo effect, his hopes for the future of placebos in clinical practice, and his recommendations for patients. 25 Nov 2019 | Deep Dive into Oxalates with Dr. Sarah Ballantyne | 01:08:43
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
On this episode we’re examining oxalates, taking a look at the benefits and dangers of consuming higher amounts of them, and the effect that oxalates can have on your body and overall health, from kidney problems to causing inflammation, vaginal pain, and fibromyalgia. There is some scary information circulating online about the negative effects of oxalates in your diet, and I’ve teamed up with Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, also known as the Paleo Mom, to tackle this topic.
In addition to our conversation about oxalates, we discuss the importance of seeking out accurate and reliable information so that you can make better health choices now. You can avoid being misled by diet and health fads, and Dr. Sarah and I have both found in our research and our experiences that it’s not just food, but a combination of many inputs that are having a significant impact on your overall health. I know you’ll benefit as you listen to our conversation about the importance of seeking out the most reliable research, whether any one food can be considered a miracle food, how taking a vacation can affect your health, and the one key factor to better health that you have probably been neglecting.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is oxalates — are they as dangerous as the internet is telling you they are? [3:22] Introducing Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, who values scientific research and making evidence-led decisions to incorporate a healthy diet into your life. [7:50] Examining the power of placebos and the overly microscopic study of health and the human body. [10:47] The importance of considering all of the information that correlates to any given reaction, rather than isolating that information to support one predetermined outcome. [12:26] Only 6% of current grant funding comes from the unbiased research funds of the government. What does that mean about the agendas of the rest of grant funding? [15:00] How many foods have you tried to avoid in order to have a more ‘healthy’ diet? [19:34] The dangers associated with an oversimplification of dieting attempts without considering scientific, evidence-led facts. [20:43] What might be holding back healing? Dr. Sarah’s experiences with identifying and diagnosing true oxalate sensitivity shows it is only present in one in a million cases. [25:01] What are the dangers of cutting healthy foods out of your diet unnecessarily? You need to make sure you’re getting enough of these essential and non-essential nutrients. [29:08] The importance of understanding the interaction of nutrients and how they react inside your body before blaming any health troubles on one particular healthy food. [33:25] A look at the history and theories surrounding oxalate reactions shows that none of them have been proven to be correct. [37:00] Are higher levels of oxalates in your diet the cause of recurrent kidney stones? [39:31] Troubleshooting deficiencies and reactions before eliminating additional healthy foods will provide clearer answers to improving your overall health. [43:33] How can taking a vacation help improve your overall health? Other factors in addition to changing your diet that are almost guaranteed to clear up when you take time to vacation. [45:40] Dr. Sarah may be The Paleo Mom but that doesn’t mean that she has subscribed solely to the paleo diet, or any other fad diet. [49:41] Dr. C’s red pill moment while reading Digital Minimalism reminded him of the importance of limiting time spent with online platforms when seeking reliable health resources. [52:23] Is celery juice a magic potion? Dr. Sarah explains why the science behind the health benefits of celery — and every other health food — have to be considered independently from a fad food following. [55:07] A comparison of the simple theories that haven’t been proven over time with the more complex, correct messages that prove to be harder to hold onto. [58:47] Dr. Sarah’s final word of advice is about sleep — where does sleep fit into your to-do list and how is it affecting your health? [1:07:08] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? 03 Feb 2020 | The Whole Truth About Whole Grains — Part 2 with Dr. Joel Fuhrman | 00:36:21
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
Today we’re continuing our conversation about grains with family physician, nutritional researcher, president of the Nutritional Research Foundation and best-selling author Dr. Joel Fuhrman. He and I discuss the role that plant foods have in promoting overall health, especially whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds.
If you are concerned about the potentially negative impact that these foods might have on your health, including inflammation or compromising autoimmune states, you need to hear the clinical information that Dr. Fuhrman shares regarding the ability of these foods to actually reverse such conditions. And if you feel that you’re living in fear of the future of your health, I know you will feel encouraged by the simple and meaningful steps that Dr. Fuhrman shares to help you start feeling better today.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] We’re wrapping up our conversation about grains with Dr. Joel Fuhrman, nutritional researcher and advocate for a whole grains nutritarian diet. [2:10] Dr. Fuhrman shares success stories of the diet that is most effective at reversing aging and slowing cancer, alleviating fibromyalgia, allergies, and autoimmune disease. [4:24] An overview of the nutritarian diet, which is rich in anti-cancer and micronutrients but doesn’t miss any nutrients that can help human health and longevity. [6:17] Understanding the plant-derived G-BOMBS (grains, berries, onions, beans, mushrooms, and seeds) diet and its scientifically-based anticancer effects. [8:10] Scientific studies that have proven the negative effects of increasing animal proteins in your diet include shortened lifespan and risk of cancer and cardiovascular death. [10:39] What dietary choices would you be willing to make in order to extend your lifespan to nearly 100 years? [11:50] Sensitivities to the richest source of resistant starch — beans — are not reason enough to eliminate them and their benefits from a healthy gut diet, including the second meal phenomenon. [14:27] Eating these four foods, including soybeans, will offer the most health benefits to the lining of your digestive tract. [15:53] The three ways that you can gather information to make the most informed and beneficial decisions for your gut health, and the advancement of our genetics that optimize the nutrients that come from G-BOMBS. [18:55] The importance of raw versus cooked foods, which ones offer aroma taste inhibitors, angiogenesis inhibitors, fat storage, and cancer cell promotion, and how to best prepare each for your diet. [25:24] Dr. Fuhrman’s retreat programs offer the opportunity to learn how you can make drastic lifestyle changes that can change your health for the better — and for good. [28:42] The psychological benefits and transformations that come with overcoming unhealthy food addictions to better control our health destiny. [32:54] It’s time to stop living in fear of the future of your health. Dr. Fuhrman’s mission is to bring people hope of living a better life, free of pain and free of fear. 31 Aug 2020 | Do Doctors Ignore Women? with Dr. Mariza Snyder | 01:00:20
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Have you heard that horse urine is an effective hormonal treatment? Or that a commonly recommended solution for endometriosis is getting pregnant? Did you know that it has only been in the last 30 years that women have received equal federal healthcare research funding to men? Too much of the information and too many of the findings we have about women’s health aren’t really about women at all. There is so much waiting to be understood about women’s health, and today we’re going to bust some of the most common, and potentially dangerous myths about women’s health. I’m joined today by Dr. Mariza Snyder, author, speaker and advocate for women in today’s imbalanced medical society. She begins by clearly highlighting some of the biases against women in the healthcare system, from research and testing to misdiagnoses and incorrect treatments. She explains the history and misunderstandings resulting from the big business of women’s health services and also enthusiastically shares the importance of functional nutrition, lifestyle choices, and advocating for yourself as a woman in today’s imbalanced healthcare system. If you’ve ever been told that your symptoms are all in your head or you’re just not sure which steps to take next to solve the mystery of your health, I know you’ll be encouraged by my conversation with Dr. Mariza Snyder.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is women’s healthcare — the history, the imbalance, and the future of women’s health. [2:23] Dr. C introduces Dr. Mariza Snyder, who shares her experience of misdiagnosis for chronic fatigue and hormone imbalance that led her to her life’s work. [7:23] Understanding the possibility of dependency on prescriptions that may or may not relieve symptoms. [8:10] The essential role of self care and proper supplementation for your physical and mental health, and how to avoid relapse into self sabotaging actions. [11:19] The 45-minute bedtime routine, including her favorite essential oils for resetting and relaxing, that Dr. Snyder refuses to sacrifice under any circumstances. [14:10] Understanding the reasons behind the ineffective “add women and stir” NIA funded research approach that has been followed in the healthcare system for far too long. [21:48] The blame that the womb has taken for the fate of women in the healthcare system beginning in the 5th century and the 1940s transition from hysteria to hormone replacement therapy. [25:40] Male vs. female reporting in the doctor’s office and the results that can have on effective healthcare, including harmful hormone treatments that have been overprescribed in the past. [34:35] Busting medical myths around endometriosis — its ‘causes’ and ‘solutions’ and the greater understanding that we finally have of it today. [41:28] Defining endometriosis, its symptoms and the correlation with patients who also suffer with thyroid disease. [47:12] The readily dismissed symptoms that women are too often misdiagnosed for, including chronic pain, autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease, and hormonal-driven changes. 17 Feb 2020 | The Whole Truth About Whole Grains — Part 3 with Stephen Yafa | 00:44:24
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Today we’re continuing our conversation on the effect of grains on health. I’m joined by Stephen Yafa, an author and speaker who has critically studied the current ideas and widely accepted misconceptions about wheat — if it has been genetically modified in dangerous ways, whether its basic structure has changed over recent decades, and whether it triggers diseases outside of Celiac. Stephen clarifies the differences between refined wheat and whole wheat, explains the benefits of various types of sourdough, and offers insights into the artisanal flour movement in America. If you are wondering if grains are actually harmful to people without Celiac disease, or what might happen to the gut health of a person with Celiac disease who decides to eat more fermented foods such as sourdough bread, you’ll want to listen to my conversation with Stephen. He has taken the time to break down some of the most common misconceptions about wheat, and he just might convince you that the health benefits of a whole grain diet is worth getting more involved in the growing and delicious worldwide artisanal movement.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today we continue our conversation about grains — are they harmful to people who don’t have Celiac disease? Introducing Stephen Yafa, a gluten researcher with answers. [2:31] Stephen shares the experiences and preconceived notions that led him to dive deep into the controversial topic of gluten. [6:15] A quick overview of the false information that is being presented in some of today’s most popular anti-gluten literature. [9:02] Has there been a dramatic shift in genetics that has caused humans to be less tolerant of wheat over the last century? [12:02] How the origin of wheat positively affected civilization over thousands of years. [13:09] The correlation between wheat and the obesity epidemic has more to do with the processing of wheat than the composition of wheat itself. [15:34] Evidence shows that natural fermentation can affect your health in a far more significant way than processed wheat. [18:04] A look at the benefits of making whole grains a central part of a healthy diet, including lower cholesterol and blood pressure and a longer-lasting feeling of fullness. [19:50] Understanding the link between cardiovascular death and whole grain in people without Celiac disease. [21:15] The health benefits of ingesting naturally fermented breads, particularly sourdough, when it passes through the gut wall without triggering an immune response. [25:38] What would happen if you offered a naturally fermented sourdough bread to a person with Celiac disease? [27:56] A peek inside the artisanal flour movement, including baking conventions and the passion and knowledge that inspires bakers around the world to continue experimenting with wheat. [32:32] Stephen’s weight loss findings from perfecting his Final Five sourdough bread recipe. [36:40] A gluten-free diet is synonymous with healthy eating, and other misconceptions about what people have to give up in order to live a more healthy lifestyle. [40:39] Stephen’s recommendations for adding layers of complexity and flavor to any diet — fermented foods. [42:36] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? 25 Jun 2019 | Uncovering the Shocking Link Between Soy and Thyroid Disease, Parts 1 & 2 with Dr. Kaayla T. Daniel, PhD | 01:16:21
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
On this episode we’re going to begin our examination of the link between soy and thyroid disease. As I have spent time deep in the research, my opinion of the correlation between the two has changed over the years. My goal for this three-episode series is to have conversations with people with strong views from both sides of the argument of the link between soy and thyroid disease. Each guest will present their perspectives on the topic and then afterward I will weigh out their evidence and discuss the results.
I’m first joined by Dr. Kaayla T. Daniel, PhD and author of The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side to America’s Favorite Health Food. She shares her experience with studying soy and thyroid disease — from poor-quality research to studies that have been inconsistent in proving the effects of soy on the thyroid. Dr. Daniel highlights who is at greater risk for negative soy effects and also shares her top picks for soy in a healthy diet.
After our conversation I will wrap up with my key takeaways, citational studies and a look at four main areas of health that can be affected by soy consumption — including breast cancer in menopausal women, perimenopausal symptoms, cardiovascular health, and bone density. The studies are conclusive and the evidence is clear, and you won’t want to miss the results I share on this first of three conversations about the highly important topic of thyroid disease and soy.
Key Takeaways: [:35] Today’s topic is the first of three segments on the correlation between soy and thyroid disease — and we’re looking at it from the angle of an anti-soy expert. [2:31] Introducing Dr. Kaayla Daniel, who shares her experiences with soy research and an overview of ayurvedic medicine and soy consumption in Asia. [7:05] A look at the numbers — how the correlation between cancer rates and soy consumption increases or decreases based on cancer type, how it affects symptoms of menopause, and its effect on cardiovascular health. [13:24] Dr. Daniel shares her findings about soy as it relates to thyroid health, it’s effects as a goitrogen, and a look at supporting research. [21:28] Studies that have been inconsistent in proving that soy does not have any effect on the thyroid often select humans that are not at risk for thyroid disease in the first place. [25:06] Understanding the iodine issues is not a simple, isolated factor to the soy issue, especially in people that already have health and thyroid problems. [29:15] Differentiating the effects of foreign xenobiotics (non-biologically derived estrogens) from plant phytoestrogens and how the body responds to each at different stages in the life cycle. [31:50] Dr. Daniel’s general health takeaways include understanding who is most at risk for negative soy effects, including vegans, menopausal women, and infants on soy-based formula. [38:35] You may be surprised to hear that Dr. Daniel enjoys eating natto, tofu, and tempu, all of which she considers safest in moderation and when avoiding this list of highly processed soy foods. [44:25] A description of some of the best sources of soy, and what Dr. Daniel really thinks of the taste of natto. [48:25] Dr. Daniel’s work with debunking the dirty secrets of detoxification programs and one obvious reason that you can’t always trust studies at face value. [54:46] A look at the citational studies from my conversation with Dr. Daniel, including soy as a cause of cancer, soy affecting thyroid peroxidase, and the risks associated with feeding soy formula to infants. [1:00:17] Is there a drawback to avoiding soy? The evidence shows that soy may not simply be a neutral product to avoid but is actually beneficial to overall health. [1:01:29] Cardiovascular disease is the biggest killer of adult women, and it can be preventable in part by soy consumption. [1:04:02] Bone density and menopause studies show that soy consumption can have a positive effect on estrogen level status in females. [1:07:30] The breast cancer studies results that have shown that soy intake was a cause in lower risks of death or recurrence of cancer. [1:10:05] Large population studies results are conclusive — ‘soy supplementation has no effect on thyroid function’. [1:15:56] Do you have a topic you’d like me to cover? 16 Mar 2020 | Healing MS Beyond Observation and Anecdote with Dr. Terry Wahls | 00:49:33
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. If someone fully recovers from an illness, did it really even happen? Is making an observation in a clinic a good enough reason to act on and interpret findings as a new idea worth sharing with others? Should these observations always be acted upon? One standalone experience is not proof enough that a method of healing should be adopted by the health community at large — we have to go beyond and create data in order to affect policy. I’m joined today by Dr. Terry Wahls, a clinical professor at the University of Iowa who conducts clinical trials testing therapeutic lifestyle and diet on multiple sclerosis, the progression of the disease and its symptoms. Dr. Wahls is an author and speaker who has joined me to discuss the personal experiences and extensive research that she has conducted in order to make a claim as grand as finding the answer to healing MS. She shares the trials and setbacks she has encountered along the way, updates with her research and several action items that anyone with MS can take today to begin their journey toward healing.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is the diet that can heal MS and the level of research that had to be conducted before making such an amazing claim. [2:55] Dr. Christianson introduces Dr. Terry Wahls, an expert at looking beyond observation and anecdote to create real evidence in healing who shares her experience with Full recovery from progressive multiple sclerosis whole healing after being wheelchair-bound. [10:00] An overview of the studies that Dr. Wahls has conducted, their details and results, and a brief history of the low-fat Roy Swank diet for healing MS. [14:39] Which is superior: a low-fat or a vegan diet? Both offer results including improved quality of life, reduction of disease, lower cholesterol, and weight loss, but neither reduce MRI lesions or relapses. [16:40] Microbiome, added sugar, gluten, and dairy are all contributing factors that have an effect on MS patients and can be altered or eliminated in order to promote healing. [18:49] Specific recommendations for eating more vegetables and less meat. [21:20] Dr. Wahl shares updates with her research and experiences with the study of diet and MS. [24:45] Similarities found within additional studies of other diseases and their results and the importance of health behaviors. [26:08] Understanding the shift in the funding that has made this kind of research more possible and Dr. Wahl’s work with frozen biomarkers. [30:47] Too many people who rely on drug therapies don’t do so out of true conviction so much as a lack of evidence for other approaches. [32:54] Securing a positive community response has been a long road for Dr. Wahl due to complaints of promising false hope, but her thorough research and relentless commitment to sharing the truth has paid off. [38:48] A look into Dr. Wahl’s updated book and the detailed conversations and guidance that are found within it. [43:16] Actions steps that anyone suffering with MS can take right now include defining your personal mission, refining your diet, and radically ramping up vegetable consumption. [47:33] Dr. Wahl shares her gratitude for the entire journey she has traveled — from profoundly disabled to fully recovered MS patient — and the resulting research and story that she now shares with the public. 09 Nov 2020 | What a Low TSH Can Mean with Dr. Brittany Henderson | 00:40:05
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve discussed the topic of low TSH levels on the podcast before, and I’ve shared with you my own perspective and the testimonials of healthy patients with varying TSH levels. Too commonly misdiagnosed as a pituitary disease or thyroid hormone resistance, low TSH levels can play a major role in the struggle to overcome sleep disturbances, weight loss or low energy levels. I wanted to get one more angle on the topic, this time from conventionally trained endocrinologist and thyroidologist Dr. Brittany Henderson. Dr. Henderson has an integrated approach to care and sees the value in lifestyle and diet changes, but she is also no stranger to the harm of misdosing patients with thyroid medications. She has answers to some of the questions that I hear most often regarding TSH levels and thyroid disease, including how to reach optimal dosage levels and how to proceed when your thyroid levels aren’t where they should be. Dr. Henderson’s career evolved from hospital and research to clinical care as she really listened to the stories from patients who were struggling, and her expertise may offer the answers you’ve been looking for. This final conversation on TSH levels is one that you won’t want to miss.
Key Takeaways: [1:07] Today’s topic is low TSH levels and the true effect they can have on your journey to optimal health. [2:17] Dr. Henderson explains the data behind ‘normal’ and low TSH levels, and why this hormone has to be optimized along with all of your other hormones. [6:00] The actions of TSH are not limited to just stimulating thyroid hormone production and actions in the fat cell and lipolysis, and TSH should not need to be suppressed. [8:18] How can TSH levels be relevant when T3 and T4 levels are on the low end of the desired scale? Dr. Henderson explains. [11:48] Understanding the scenario in which TSH levels can be tested as low while hormone levels are fluctuating, and the expected time it will take for the TSH levels to start moving after pituitary has been overly suppressed. [13:44] What if you only feel well when your TSH levels are low? Dr. Henderson explains how she adjusts dosage to maximize wellness and the side effects that prove it’s not safe to continue with low TSH levels. [17:58] A look at ‘subclinical’ thyroid disease and its relationship to diabetes and chronic heart disease as well as the imperfect tools that have to be used to optimize thyroid function. [21:10] The history of and critical need for correct thyroid hormone dosage amounts to avoid toxicosis. [25:54] The reasons that you will not find much research on double-blind studies regarding Hashimoto's disease, and where you can get reliable information instead. [27:49] Dr. Henderson shares the reason for her shift from hospital and research career to clinical care, and offers encouragement for anyone that is wondering how to proceed with their thyroid care. [33:20] Dr. C concludes with a reminder of the goals and intentions of the conversations that take place on the Medical Myths, Legends, and Fairy Tales podcasts. 08 Jun 2020 | Does Animal Protein Cause Cancer? with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon | 00:59:01
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
Do animal proteins cause cancer? Are they dangerous? Many popular views and diets including the keto and paleo diets say that animal proteins should be reduced or eliminated for various health reasons, while other evidence shows that the health benefits of animal proteins outweigh the risks. We’re going to dive deep into this critical topic today to figure out exactly how much protein is too much, what happens to muscle mass when you limit protein intake, and how protein affects overall health and wellbeing.
I’m joined today by Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, a fellowship trained physician and expert in nutritional science and geriatrics to discuss the facts about protein. We talk about the truth behind some of today’s most popular claims about protein, the negative effects of experimentation with macrobiotics, and the “clean meat” movement of the future.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is animal protein — does it cause cancer? Do the health benefits outweigh the risks? [2:55] Dr. Christianson introduces Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, who has trained under one of the world’s leading experts on protein and begins by clarifying the facts behind protein and cancer. [6:05] Questions you need to ask yourself when engaging in conversations about the relationship between food intake and cancer. [7:45] Understanding mTOR stimulators, animal proteins and their link to obesity and cancer. [12:18] Shifts in trends of protein intake based on NHANES data show that average muscle mass is dangerously low despite an increasing need as people age. [15:41] Why would a change in protein affect body composition and obesity? Dr. Lyon explains the link between protein intake and the need for increased muscle protection. [17:57] The protein leverage hypothesis provides clarity to Dr. C’s experience with exhibiting eating disorder-like symptoms when he was lacking protein in his diet. [21:58] Is protein carcinogenic? Dr. Lyon offers clarification about claims from The China Study. [24:09] Understanding risk ratios of cancer and protein intake as well as the potential effects of under intaking protein. [26:59] Vegetarian? Vegan? Dr. Lyon gives dietary suggestions for meeting protein needs from plant-based foods and a gram guideline for protein intake for every dietary style. [32:03] Healthspan vs. lifespan — understanding the value of arriving at old age in the best health possible, and how you can make a high quality life happen. [34:07] Low-protein, five-day modified fasting programs are hugely popular right now, but how do they really affect overall health? [40:04] There is no doubt that higher muscle mass positively affects health throughout ageing, and Dr. C. notes the increased vulnerability of women to such detrimental conditions. [43:05] A deeper look at the clean meat movement, sustainability, and the true correlation between cows and the greenhouse effects. [49:10] The biggest reason Dr. C. believes the clean meat movement won’t catch on anytime soon might surprise you. [53:19] Genetic variability, soy, the effectiveness of extreme dieting and why it just doesn’t work for everyone. [55:04] Dr. Lyon wraps up with a summary of the conversation and encourages listeners to take an objective look at poor science and agenda-driven information. 21 Oct 2019 | Is the Dirty Dozen Dirty? with Steve Savage | 00:57:12
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
On this episode we’re examining the facts behind organic foods and pesticides — which pesticides are the most dangerous, what are the exposure limits for pesticides in the food system, and exactly how much better are organic foods for your health? The Environmental Working Group releases a Dirty Dozen list each year of the foods that are highest in pesticide residue, as well as a Clean 15 list that reports that which produce is the safest to eat. But many people don’t realize that these lists are changing and updated every year, and that the methods used to compile the lists may not be the most accurate or reliable approach to gathering this data. Regardless of the lists, there are persistent pollutants in the food supply, some that are even more prevalent in organic foods. How is this possible? How does the Dirty Dozen actually make their list? And how should we react to the information that we learn from it?
I’m joined today by Steve Savage, food scientist and agricultural speaker who has spent over 40 years communicating food issues to the public. Steve has joined me to help explain the relationship between pesticides, organic food, and the foods that have been deemed the most and least safe by the EWG. Dr. Savage and I are discussing the answers to these questions, as well as taking a look at USDA testing methods, overcoming the psychological fears that come with eating toxins, and the most dangerous toxin in food that is rarely discussed that you will want to be sure to avoid more than any pesticide.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is pesticides and the Clean 15, the Dirty Dozen and the logic and methodology that goes into compiling these lists. [2:59] Introducing Steve Savage, food scientist and agricultural speaker who describes how the Dirty Dozen list is formulated each year and what its data really tells us. [6:10] What levels of consumption are safe when considering pesticide exposure in produce? [8:29] Creating the Dirty Dozen — Dr. Savage explains the process of turning the data set into the annual list — and the key indicator of safety that is ignored by the EWG. [10:39] Why you shouldn't buy solely organic foods if you are trying to avoid pesticides. [14:28] USDA testing does not look for the pesticides that are naturally occurring in many foods, including organic produce. [16:50] Overcoming psychological fears of the danger of ingesting toxic chemicals in tiny, non-dangerous amounts. [18:20] The reason the Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15 are not accurate gauges of toxicity levels in foods may have something to do with who is funding the EWG. [20:21] If you can’t afford to eat organic, should you stop eating fruits and vegetables? [24:21] An overview of the types of pesticides that have been used in agriculture over the last several decades shows that safety improvements are continually being made, with one elemental exception. [30:06] The relative toxicity of glyphosate and the results of it’s studies as one of the most highly tested pesticides in the world. [35:09] Differentiating between risk and hazard — understanding how we can mitigate risks by controlling exposure. [39:15] The dangerous group of chemicals that no one is talking about — mycotoxins — and how it affects organic foods. [43:18] Why are organic almonds at the top of Dr. Savage’s lists of organic foods to avoid? [49:04] Wrapping up with Dr. Savage — don’t believe everything you read on the internet, and further your understanding on exposure and threshold testing. 31 Dec 2019 | How Do Carbs Really Affect Your Health? | 00:33:31
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. On this episode I want to address your fears about how carbohydrates really affect your health. Our understanding of energy balance has increased dramatically over the last decade, and I want to make sure that you have a solid understanding of the science-based information that is available today so that you can make the best decisions for your health. Carbs have been villainized for too long and I want to help you understand the dangers of eliminating any macronutrients from your diet. If you are looking for ways to lose weight and be healthier and you just can’t decide between lowering your carb intake, lowering your fat intake, or lowering your overall food intake, you need to listen to the evidence I present in this episode. There is a clear answer to this question, and you may be surprised to learn that optimal health doesn’t actually come from any one of these options. I will walk you through a more intellectual approach to understanding scientific findings, review the results we have seen from low-carb diets, and offer my suggestions for an optimal and healthy diet. There is no agenda behind my stance on the benefits and dangers of eliminating carbs from your diet, I simply want you to make the best informed decision possible with the information that we know now.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is carbohydrates — addressing your fears, your questions, and the misunderstandings we’ve all heard about this essential macronutrient. [4:02] The three lines of evidence that you can examine to prove or disprove a claim include mechanisms, epidemiology, and intervention. [6:09] Dr. C. breaks down the big phrases that are used to support the carbohydrate model, starting with misunderstandings about the model itself. [10:15] Is there one essential carbohydrate? If not, can you afford to cut any carbs out of your diet? Consider the effects of getting higher than recommended doses essential nutrients. [13:50] Dr. C. explains how the low-fat diet movement of the 80s never actually happened based on average intakes and percentages, and therefore how it never worked. [16:05] Can you trick your body into losing weight by denying yourself any one macronutrient? [17:53] A deeper look at populations of people with varying carbohydrate intake. 27 Dec 2021 | The Effects of Beef on the Environment with Robb Wolf | 01:04:04
The health benefits of protein are pretty clear. It helps the body build and repair tissues, allows metabolism to function well, and it also helps in maintaining proper pH and fluid balance. Animals, like cows, are a good source of protein. Many argue that if we care for our health and our environment, we should get rid of red meat such as beef but science says otherwise. I read a book recently called Sacred Cow written by Robb Wolf and Diana Rogers. They put this book together about how raised meat can actually be good for the planet and can give a positive environmental impact.
Join me as we dive deep in the effect of beef in the environment with Rob Wolf.
Key Takeaways: [2:05] Introduction to Robb Wolf. [3:50] Health implications of consuming meat. [5:35] Research claims around consuming animal products. 17 Sep 2021 | Is Adrenal Fatigue Real? with Ari Whitten | 00:47:14
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place.
Is adrenal fatigue a real thing? Is it the culprit behind some of your most frustrating chronic symptoms? Do low levels of cortisol mean that your body is unable to make cortisol? The balance and rhythm of your cortisol levels are immensely important to your health and can be one of the biggest predictors of your longevity and wellbeing, but regulating your cortisol levels can be an unnecessarily frustrating journey with misinformation at every turn.
I’m joined today by Ari Whitten to dive into some of the myths and misunderstandings surrounding cortisol. Ari is a best-selling author and the founder of the Blueprint Energy System. With a Ph.D. in clinical psychology doing masters work on human nutrition and functional medicine, Ari is an expert on all things cortisol. He addresses the most common misunderstandings surrounding cortisol levels and adrenal fatigue, explains several of the studies that have been conducted on the topic, and shares the one factor that is most likely to point to low levels of morning cortisol levels.
Key Takeaways: [1:06] Today’s topic is adrenals and cortisol levels and the impact they have on your overall health and fatigue. [2:10] Ari defines adrenal fatigue and explains the role of cortisol and its role in stress response, fatigue, depression, brain fog, cravings and more. [6:22] The three basic phases of adrenal fatigue include the acute, intensitory, and exhausted phases, but there is zero science to support any of these phases. [8:01] Doctors diagnose adrenal fatigue every day while the endocrine society has stated that adrenal fatigue is not a real medical condition — who is telling the truth? [11:48] Is adrenal fatigue the cause of your symptoms of chronic fatigue and to what extent is chronic stress linked to the wearing out of the adrenal glands? [14:08] Ari shares the results of his deep dive into the data regarding adrenal fatigue, and how you can break down and understand these studies. [23:12] A breakdown of the conflicting results and statistics of 59 adrenal fatigue syndrome studies conducted from 1995 to 2010. [28:15] Is there evidence that people with lower morning cortisol levels have more symptoms than those who don’t? [34:00] Studies focusing on burnout and cortisol levels show inconsistent results and bring the effectiveness of hormone replacement therapy into question. [38:01] Is HPA slope and stability an accurate predictor of long-term health outcomes? Ari breaks down the variations in and statistical significance of various effect sizes. [44:05] There are no studies that show a relationship between low morning cortisol levels and adrenal fatigue. [46:03] Factors that are consistently linked to low morning cortisol levels include circadian rhythm disruption, sleep disruption, and being a night owl. 20 Jan 2020 | The Whole Truth About Whole Grains — Part 1 with Dr. Peter Osborne | 00:49:03
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Today is the first episode of a three part series that examines the effect of grains on health. I’m joined today by the Gluten-Free Warrior — Dr. Peter Osborne, the founder of the Gluten-Free Society who works to help people with autoimmune and degenerative diseases. He shares some of the experiences and citations that have led him to work so passionately to educate people about the effect of grains on our overall health. Dr. Osborne has helped over 5,000 patients regain overall health and wellness with a grain-free diet, and his approach to healing is focused on individuals with auto-immune diseases. If you’ve ever suspected that you might have gluten intolerance but aren’t sure if you have Celiac disease, if you’re wondering what environmental factors might be affecting your health, or if you are looking for ways to eliminate painful reactions to gluten, you need to listen to this conversation to help you decide which steps you need to take next.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s topic is grains — are they harmful to people who don’t have Celiac’s disease? [2:00] Introducing Dr. Peter Osborne, who shares his overall thoughts on the effects of grains on human health, the quality of studies that have been conducted about grains, and the importance of identifying autoimmune diseases when healing for chronic disease. [5:48] Dr. Osborne reacts to the statement that reduced-grain diets contribute to worse health outcomes, including cardiovascular death, and explains how the quality of the diet is a greater factor than the gluten intake itself. [9:52] The correlation between a grain-free diet and autoimmune disease, and a snapshot of the overall history and changing health factors that have an influence on a person's weakened health status. [15:00] The danger of not controlling for variables in a patient, the importance of believing that you can feel better again, and the value of overall body-fuel balance. [18:10] How can you tell if you have non-Celiac gluten sensitivity, and what can you do about it? Dr. Osborne suggests starting with diet change and supporting nutritional deficit. [22:30] Understanding the prevalence of non-Celiac gluten sensitivity and the environmental factors that accelerate it including exposure to pesticides, plastics, antibiotics, chemicals and medications. [27:04] Should all people with a gluten sensitivity be tested for Celiac’s disease? Dr. Osborne says that it is not necessary, and he explains why. [29:40] What are the pitfalls of making dietary changes that are not accurate relative to the symptoms that are actually present? A look at the variables that affect overall health regardless of gluten-sensitivity. [37:04] If variables such as molds, pesticides and hybridization are present, it becomes increasingly difficult to separate individual aspects of the diet. Here’s what to do about it. [39:24] A list of conditions for non-Celiac gluten sensitivities that are actually caused by gluten and the next steps you should take to begin healing. [43:41] Dr. Osborne’s number one tip for enhancing overall health starts with self observation — pay attention to how your body responds to activity, exercise and food before you decide that your condition is irreversible. 02 Mar 2020 | Is It Worth It To Test Your Genes? with Dr. Ben Lynch | 00:57:37
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Genetic testing is all the rage these days, but is it necessary? Is the information accurate or clinically relevant? Does it result in medical action that is unnecessary? Dr. Ben Lynch is a leader in the world of nutrigenomics and he has joined me today to shed some light on the topic. As the founder of Seeking Health and the author of Dirty Genes, Dr. Lynch has extensive experience, knowledge, and answers about the value and importance of the information you can gain from genetic testing. We dive right into the misconceptions about genetic testing which too often leads people to make poorer health choices than they might have without the testing. You will quickly learn from this conversation that the best approach to a long and healthy life is combining your genetic testing results with common-sense action. I understand that there are so many ways that you can feel frightened, overwhelmed, or hopeless in your journey to health, but genetic testing does not have to contribute to those negative feelings. Whether you’ve considered genetic testing but are feeling hesitant or you have already done the testing and don’t know which step to take next, you’ll want to listen to my conversation with Dr. Lynch.
Key Takeaways: [1:10] Today’s podcast covers everything you need to know about genetic testing and the true impact your genes have on your overall health. [2:14] Dr. C shares his experience with the accuracy of traits testing along with genetic testing. [6:28] The top takeaway points that consumers still get wrong when factoring genes into overall health include thinking your genes are ‘broken’ and trying to take supplements to correct for genetic variations. [8:38] Dr. Lynch shares the knowledge he gained, the experiences he had, and the actions he took following his own genetic testing. [13:29] Understanding the difference between gene status and gene expression — and how each one affects your overall health. [15:30] The accuracy of consumer-directed genetic testing and the potential negative effects of inaccurately or incompletely reporting BRCA mutations to consumers. [20:45] Functional and relevant variances in SNPs that should be reported have been built into the genetic testing offered by Dr. Lynch and offer increased insights into findings. [26:50] Dr. Lynch’s experience with testing positive for an MTHFR variant, taking a methylfolate supplement to attempt to correct it, and ending up with worse symptoms than he ever had before. [31:45] Common recommendations that come after identifying a mutated gene that often have a negative effect on overall health. [36:05] Dr. C recommends the Dirty Genes book as a way to get a better sense of your actual gene expression as well as recommendations that are not based on counterproductive unknowns. [37:20] What are the lifestyle steps that people should take as a result of genetic testing? Dr. Lynch recommends discontinuing the use all supplements to get a baseline measure of your true health and the importance of breathing through your nose. [44:38] Dr. C dives even deeper into the benefits of controlling osmoreceptors via nostril breathing. [48:36] The value of educating yourself on how your body functions and the lifestyle changes that will benefit you the most prior to doing genetic testing. [51:07] Examples of how responding to variances in context can provide advantages to your overall health, and a clear definition of which genes you actually have control over based on your lifestyle choices. 03 Aug 2020 | Using Carbs to Lose Weight with Dr. Sarah Ballantyne | 00:59:32
Between the latest online fads and the crazy media headlines, it’s easier than ever to get confused about your health. If you want to make better decisions about your health today so you can feel better and live longer, you’ve come to the right place. Do you feel fearful of carbohydrates? Essential nutrients have been demonized by many popular diets which have only resulted in confusion and frustration for too many. Our conversation today centers around the role of insulin in both health and disease. I’m joined today by repeat podcast guest Dr. Sarah Ballantyne to discuss the importance of keeping essential nutrients in your diet, regardless of what the latest fads are trying to convince you to do. We know that the link between diet and health is much more complicated than just limiting calories in/calories out, or tracking net carbohydrates, and today we’re going to take a look at the whole picture of overall health. Dr. Sarah offers a sensible and doable approach to losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and you might be surprised to hear that it has more to do with fiber, sleep, and laughter than you thought possible.
Key Takeaways: [1:12] Today’s topic is essential nutrients and the effects they have on your optimal health. [2:17] Dr. C introduces Sarah Ballantyne, a health educator who shares the journey that led her to lose 120 pounds but still didn’t solve her health problems. [7:12] Dr. Sarah reveals the one health struggle that emerged as a result of aggressively losing weight and why her health deteriorated despite losing so many pounds. [10:46] Why the number on the scale can’t be the only metric you need to use to define your overall health. [13:30] A look at the carbohydrate-insulin model hypothesis and how it relates to weight loss and calorie intake. [19:13] Are there truly no essential carbohydrates? Dr. Sarah says absolutely not and explains the reasons why. [24:58] The importance of keeping sugar in broccoli and root vegetables separate from white sugar when categorizing carbohydrates. [28:08] Insulin resistance and inflammation and how both reflect on lifestyle factors like sleep rather than diet choices. [32:42] The impact that lack of sleep has on cognitive function, memory, and ability to collaborate, along with increased diseases and decreased cancer survivability. [37:10] Why you shouldn't avoid eating fruit just because it has sugar in it, and why you can't support a diverse gut microbiome with a fibre supplement.
