After two Gundams, the dice have served us up a very different beast, though still a product of the One Year War: the Gelgoog, Zeon's endgame grunt. Six and Dylan are both initially skeptical about the Big Shoulder Boy, but by the end of their discussion there's a begrudging respect for the effective and practical design of this workhouse. Plus, there are so many cool variants! I want a Galbaldy Alpha real grade.

Sometimes it feels like grunts are where mobile suit artists can really flex their talents. The Graze is a fantastic design: modular, striking, assertive, and crisp. There are numerous interesting variants, including one that's a war crime! It has elements that are a tribute to previous grunts, and walks a line between human and inhuman with elegance. What if a mobile suit was a Gundam, but also a cop? Hmmm. Sorry, I guess that doesn't narrow it down. Ok, and ALSO a total chump. No? Still don't know? Well, it's the Jegan. One of the many children of the GM project, the Jegan and its many variations are a classic example of how over time, optimization strips the excitement out of design. It's not a bad robot, by any means. But it's definitely not exciting either, unless you get really worked up about mobile suits with hand grenades.

Let's make a bug friend! Our first run-in with the designs of Victory Gundam presents us with one of the greatest creations of Zanscare's BESPA mobile suit engineers. In a series of weird weapons, the Gottrlatan, or just Gottr for short, is a fairly conservative design. This despite it having a head-mounted beam antenna, beam tonfa on each wrist, and a huge Eff You beam cannon mounted on its back. Victory designs are good, is the thing.

The story can now be told. Long ago, in the early days of Mechanista in G, we rolled. And we rolled the XMA-01 Rafflesia, from Mobile Suit Gundam F91. We talked for a good half hour. And then we discovered that my (Six's) Audacity... wasn't picking up my microphone. My half of the conversation was just gone. Now, Dylan is the one that brings all the knowledge anyway, but without a cohost to bounce off of? That isn't a releasable podcast. We rerolled. We talked about something else that week.

Then, a few weeks later... we rolled the Rafflesia again. And we said NO. We can't. We can't! We can't do this again. The conversation is too fresh in our minds, and besides, it's cursed. We rerolled. And for a time, there was peace. And then. A few months later. We rolled the Rafflesia again.

This time, it recorded just fine. The track was pristine. But I (Six) had a cunning plan. We'd recorded 3 episodes that day, a feat we haven't accomplished before or since. And we'd done so with the intention of putting one on ice, to post while I was in the hospital for a major surgery. And wouldn't it be FUNNY if the one we put on ice was the cursed ep we'd already lost once?

So ok, weird personal story time. When I'm at work (I work retail), there's a lot of pushing vehicles loaded with boxes. Often you can't see where you're going. And so there are a lot of times where you realize there's this vehicle loaded with shit that's on a collision course with you, and you can't dodge, but the person pushing it can't see you. So I developed this weirdly deep "AHHHH" yell that sounds like a goat pretending to be a person to alert them.

See my logic is, it's a weird enough yell that you know no one is in pain or in like big trouble, but it still gets your attention. And you're like "ah ok there must be someone in the way." And I've gotten weird looks but no one has hit me with a vehicle since I started using it. Anyway this is all to say that's the sound I associate with the Zakrello's funny open mouth. It's doing a weird goat-pretending-to-be-a-person AHHHH.

It's the best mobile suit, Charlie Brown! The weakest part of the mobile suit is of course the pilot. Now, a DUMB designer would try to accommodate this by making the machine protect the pilot, give it safety features, maybe try to assist them in the task of piloting. But we ain't about that. Let's talk about a GOOD designer, or rather six of them (don't forget Howard!), who instead decided to make a machine that the pilot either learns to be less weak or freakin' dies. What does the term "upgrade" really mean? Was Windows Vista an "upgrade" to Windows XP? There is in fact such a thing as too much. Or, maybe there isn't. Maybe there's only a point where the excess ceases to be well-managed. Somewhere along the line of this mobile suit's lineage, the design takes a bad step, and never fully recovers. I mean, I say "somewhere," but it's not like a secret. It's with the Reborns Gundam Origin. Everything thereafter is a mess. It's a shame, I do like the idea.
