Shereece Spain combines her love of sewing, crocheting, and pirates in her business name - such an impressive play on words!
We talk about all these loves, and how they've grown to provide a source of income for Shereece's family, allowing her to stay closely involved in her kids' lives, and to have them involved in her business too. Her upcoming pattern release was in fact inspired by a Shrek marathon with the kids. What's not to love?
Shereece recently designed and donated the pattern for the 2022 Stronger Together quilt along, which raised funds to help underrepresented students earn a college education. This project celebrated Black History month. You can still take part in this fund raiser! Find the pattern at the Fat Quarter Shop. It's FREE, but you'll be offered a chance to donate to this excellent cause.
Clearly, she has a huge heart, plus some great encouragement for finding and expressing your creative side.

Audrey Esarey - exploration is key to developing your own style
Audrey Esarey is an artist - no doubt about it! Her quilts are graphic, highly original, layered in interest and details, and, well....just a feast for the eyes.
Audrey and I chat about her journey from her first quilt class to here - how that involved exploration, and trying out new skills, and even a complete hiatus for some years. But all those things served to clarify and refine her esthetic. And who knows what other new things may be over the horizon? For now, hand-dyed fabric, radial designs, and intricate line quilting are hallmarks of Audrey's style. It's fascinating to peak behind the scenes on some of these skills as she's developed them.

Sue Heinz is a gem of a teacher, but WHAT she teaches is equally remarkable. Her quilting tools and designs are in a class of their own.
Sue shares some rich (and maybe never-before-heard?) stories about personalities and history in the quilting industry. We chat at length about the value of giving credit where it's due, and the life-changing power of connections.
Plus we give a good plug for Elmer's sticky stuff (NOT glue, you understand).
Sue is absolutely genius in her development of tools that make complex measurements and marking very do-able for the machine quilter. And she follows that with incredibly creative and original quilting designs and motifs. I know this firsthand, as I personally use her tools and designs A LOT.

Karlee Porter - Graffiti Quilter and Fabric Artist
Karlee Porter is an artist! In her own words: "I excelled in the clay pencil holders of elementary school; I dominated the 10 minute drawing warm ups of my inner city middle school art class; and, against my mother’s most polite wishes, I skipped most of my high school core classes to escape to the art studio on the 3rd floor of my art-deco-from-the-great-depression high school."
Happily for us, these days she considers fabric and thread her medium. We chat about her first entry at Houston Quilt Festival (1st place ribbon winner, woot, woot!), her signature graffiti quilting, the art and business of digital quilting designs, plus the roses and thorns of being an entrepreneur.
Karlee has built a unique business that prints full-size quilt tops. These gorgeous "panels" are a wonderful stepping stone for quilters that is low-risk, and still beautiful.
I know you'll appreciate Karlee's thoughts about where our validation comes from. Solid life lesson in that one.

Courtney Kimball first learned to sew in special some one-on-one time with her grandmother, and she's been "making" ever since.
In 2017 she and her husband and family moved to Honduras to develop their existing business. And over time, Courtney became acquainted with the desperate needs in the slums right next to their apartment complex. It began by meeting and learning to know one woman, Jocelyn, and exploring her circumstances, her dwelling, and her struggles. Then came sisters...aunts...daughters...and the common threads were found. Courtney found herself in a place where she could use help prepping a hand-sewing project, and she was able to employ a young woman to do just that. That planted a seed of an idea for expanding this possibility to help MANY women earn for their families.
Courtney and her state-side sister set out to change the trajectory of the lives of these women and girls by providing a way for them to make a living - prepping quilt kits.
The story is ongoing...but if you'd like to meet some of the women of One Common Thread, check out Courtney's website. You'll be introduced to individuals, and see where they live and work. And of course you'll be able to see the beautiful hexie quilt kits they offer.
One of the simplest ways to help is to LIKE and FOLLOW and INTERACT on social media pages. This help raise visibility and awareness of the One Common Thread project.

We've all cringed at those words. C'mon, admit it!
This is my exploration of edge to edge and custom quilting, and why and when you might want to choose one over the other.
Custom quilting is specific to areas, or blocks, or borders; may include stops and starts or thread color changes, and is often more complex or intricate. It is definitely more time consuming than edge-to-edge, so that's a huge consideration. But there ARE times when it fits the bill. Maybe you want something very WOW as a focal point to hang on your wall. Or perhaps you've got your sights set on winning a ribbon. Or maybe you just want to try out some ruler work or a brand new fill you've just learned. All legit reasons for using custom quilting.
But many times - maybe even most of the time - we're creating quilts to be used and loved. We want them to be serviceable and cozy, as well as beautiful. E2E quilting is the answer. It creates texture while remaining in the background, letting the fabrics and pattern shine.
If you like to see some of my favorite designs on a variety of quilts, here's some swipe-worthy photos: Pinterest - edge to edge gallery of designs Facebook - current projects and photos Instagram - current projects and photos

Today's episode is a little departure from the podcast norm....I'm giving some backstory on why I created a comprehensive course on the art of machine quilting. It was born directly from the need I felt as a novice quilter to have some solid and extremely practical guidance as I got to know my machine and my own style of quilting.
What type of quilter or creator might want that? Who is it intended to help? And of course, what can you expect to discover or learn? And how will it help you in your quilting journey.
I've tried to answer all these questions, and above all, to show that freehand quilting absolutely can be learned, by anyone who wants to.

Machine quilting can be very solitary, especially on a longarm. It's just not that easy to pack up your machine and head to a friend's house for the day, right? But it's important to have that community - that sharing of ideas and tips, encouragement and motivation.

Sam Alberts - building and pivoting a crafting business
Sam Alberts was one of my very first podcast guests - see Episode #4. Now she's back to give us an update on her Quilting Curve Studio.
Sam's been (of course!) quilting, lo, these many months. But also, she's made significant pivots in her business. She was finding that a) there are only so many hours a body can quilt, and that translates into a ceiling on income b) she has a wealth of experience to share with other quilters who are earlier in their journey c) she missed the companionship of other quilters
So! Sam's quilting has entered the digital world. She's launched a YouTube channel, as well as several on-demand courses, and also been traveling to local and national quilt shows.
Listen in as Sam lets us see behind the shiny bits - the new skills that have to be learned (video editing!)...the prioritizing that takes place (fewer customer quilts)...and ultimately the reward of seeing her quilting business grow, and her students flourish.

Today I'm talking about a slightly uncomfortable topic - what to do when everything’s just going wrong.
Just last week, I received a schooling in this! I regularly live stream quilting a project on YouTube and Facebook. I’ve dubbed it Live & Unscripted, and sometimes Quilting’s First Reality Show because it’s just that - real time process without any edits or “cleaning up”. I’ve always included the rough bits, like thread or needle breaks, or second-guessing design decisions, because my goal is to help viewers see what a quilting studio really looks like. See how long things really take. See if I really do quilt in bare feet and manual mode!
Well, this particular live stream started off with a lurch. About 8 minutes before going LIVE, I discovered that the backing of the quilt was about 2” shorter than the front. That’s a problem. A big problem.
It kind of went downhill from there….re-doing while loading…tension problems…camera problems…a loose seam catching the hopper foot and stitching it in…and so it went, until finally I just called a halt.
So this is some candid talk about how that feels....and what I learned from YOU, the viewers.

Adria Good has been quilting for a very long time! She's quilted through getting married...kids...homeshooling...basketball coaching...all the things.
Her story is one of learning and growing. New idea? Research and learn. New upgrade? Practice, and expand capabilities. New challenge? Take it one step at a time. You CAN do the hard things.
Listen to hear all these stories and more. Adria has grown from sewing simple plush toys with her first sewing machine to working at an industrial longarm quilting machine. She now produces YouTube video and online courses, teaching women all over the world the art of free motion quilting.

Over 10 years ago Karlee Porter invented and made wildly popular her signature style of quilting - Grafitti Quilting. Machine quilting has never looked so gorgeous!
Basically, it's a mashup of all kinds of unexpected designs in the same quilted area. But that's not all. Oh no! It also involves breaking lots of quilting "rules" to achieve a very unique, and extremely personalized look.
In the first edition of her book "Grafitti Quilting", first published in 2017, Karlee broke down her system into a step by step process that even non-doodlers like myself could learn to quilt.
In her upcoming 3rd edition, she has MASSIVELY enlarged on the printed content of the book, plus added tons of QR codes, linking to all kinds of in-depth video training.
Listen in as we chat about the new book, traveling the world, the marvels of digital learning, and much, much more.
If you can't wait to take Karlee's class, here's a sweet $25 off for you! Use the code SBS25 class registration: https://bit.ly/3v1ZD0u

Meri and I have been sisters-in-law for over 30 years, so we share a lot of crafting history. She's not afraid to try things - from beekeeping to shearing sheep and carding wool to knitting socks to soap-making to toothbrush rug-making....she's tried 'em all. I think we forgot to talk about mummifying a chicken with the homeshooled grandkids - but, yeah, she's done that too. We'll save that for next time!

You really should check out the fabric shop on her website - it's unlike anything I've seen before. It's peer-to-peer fabric shopping, providing a place for sewists to pass on fabric they don't love any more, and find new enthusiasm in someone else's previously loved yardage.

For about 20 summers, Karen Schoepflin Hagen hit the road and showed off her quilts in gymnasiums and cafeterias across the Western U.S. Now, the quilts she’s made over the past 45 years — hundreds of them! — cover the walls of the former Masonic Lodge in Genesee and are available for public viewing. “To me, it’s just a dream come true,” Karen said.
The two-story building on the corner of Laurel Street and Ash Avenue is called Kascha Quilts — named after the first two letters in each of her names.
The public can view Karen’s work from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday or by appointment. To schedule an appointment, call (208) 285-1786. There is no admission fee, but donations are accepted.
Our visit to the museum was a treat! Karen's enthusiasm and humor are infectious, and she has so many original ways to use fabric and create dimension and depth in her quilts.

Barb Edwards - Seeing the Community at the End of the Lane
Barb is a local (to me) crafter who stepped up to fill a need for masks early on in the pandemic. Being rural, she simply put out a bin at the end of her long driveway offering them to anyone who had a need. How did those masks make a quilt, and how did Barb end up in the news? Well, you'll have to listen to find out!
Here's where you can read the News 8 article that features Barb's story.

Janice E. Frisch received her PhD in folklore from Indiana University, where she studied women’s textile arts, particularly quilting. Her research focuses on transnational influences in textiles and on the stories women tell about their art. She has conducted research at numerous museums, including the International Quilt Museum, the Winterthur Museum, and the Quilt Gallery and Museum in York, England. Her groundbreaking work on the development of the block-style quilt in the United States was recently published in American Quilts in the Industrial Age, 1760–1870, edited by Patricia Cox Crews and Carolyn Ducey.
In this episode we chat about Janice's first "quilt" style, her wonderful quilting mentor (we should all aspire to be one of these!), and her extensive travels. Janice learned early on that if you volunteer, you get to actually handle the quilts! With gloves, of course.
She currently works for The Electric Quilt Company, helping them test their latest software for designing quilts, while also running her own business, giving lectures, and teaching about quilts and quilt history. More info and contact information for Janice's lectures can also be found on her website.

------------------------- Laura and I had a riveting discussion about the art, the emotion, and the expression that are so visible in her one-of-a-kind pieces. Her words describe her technique the best:
"My material is salvaged wood gathered in the aftermath of environmental tragedies, such as Hurricane Sandy, forest fires in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and from numerous other unnamed storms in Massachusetts. The wood is from damaged and wrecked houses – cedar sidings, screen doors, kitchen cabinets, wood tables- and repurposed into luminous, patchwork constructions. Through these difficult situations, my work is filled with vibrant color and uplifting hopefulness. I never paint the wood, they are as I found them and bear the marks of usage through their nail holes and scratches reminding us that material has memory."
And of course I had questions!
How do you store a wooden stash?
And what's fussy cutting?
And how big are your wood quilts?
Prepare to be amazed and inspired by Laura's creations. You can view the exhibition we referred to here: New England Quilt Museum

Machine quilting can be very solitary, especially on a longarm. It's just not that easy to pack up your machine and head to a friend's house for the day, right? But it's important to have that community - that sharing of ideas and tips, encouragement and motivation.

Liz McDade is passionate about pursuing a zero waste lifestyle, and no trace products. In her own words "no trace products are reusable, washable alternatives to their evil disposable twins". So we chat about how that passion grew, how her hobby has grown into a business, and Liz gives great tips for reducing waste in your cooking, and even in your bathroom!
Liz has tons of YouTube tutorials for making re-usable storage and shopping solutions, publishes patterns, and if you're in a hurry to get started using them, you can find ready-made products in her Etsy shop.

So many of us know Vanessa Christenson for her gorgeous ombre fabric lines, but she is SO much more! Here she is, in her own words:
Vanessa Christenson is a wife and mom of four humans and two cats who likes to quilt, sew, decorate, run her mouth, hang out with other women who can stand her, and fake organize the death out of anything (i.e. get rid of things). She started V and Co back when her husband was deployed (because why wouldn’t a mom of four add yet another thing to her plate) and has since grown it into the go-to place for amazing ombre quilting fabric and patterns. Vanessa calls Iowa home — although as a California native — she’s still not a big fan of Midwest winters.
She can also be found in all these places: Website: https://vanessachristenson.com/ (head here if you'd like to book a coaching consultation) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/VandCo Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vchristenson/

Welp, we had a dilly of a week! And these things happen to entrepreneurs on the regular, don't they?
In the moment, it can be tough to learn the lessons...make the pivots...decide the decisions. So we (my husband Dave and I) pulled back the curtains on some of our rough spots and how we've worked through them. We talk about individual lessons learned, eye-openers in my business, and how we've learned to entrepreneur (is that a verb?) together.

Kathryn is a quilter with broad experience - maker, longarmer, shop owner, pattern writer, all the things. But now, lucky for us, she's set her sights on becoming an author. Did you know a "cozy" is a genre of mystery novel? And in a cozy, the reader has the opportunity to solve the murder right along with the main character, usually an amateur sleuth. What could be more perfect for crafters?
Join us as we talk about the creative journey, and the plot twists and pivots along the way.

Susan Smith: Life Lessons from my Favorite Quilter - My Mom
My mother was a tremendous influence in my life, and not by her words, but by her example. In this episode I highlight a few of the lessons I learned from her, and how they impact my life to this day.
She had a saying for every occasion (it seemed to me!) and a few of these are highlighted too. "A stitch in time saves nine" and "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well", are just a couple of them.
I hope these memories will perhaps remind you of beautiful lessons your mother taught, or even encourage you in passing on enduring values to your own children.

Susan Smith - Lessons Learned in the School of Life and Business
It's candid again! This week I'm opening up about business - how I fell into being an entrepreneur....what it looks like (for real!).... and a few things I've learned.
Many of us have pivoted and done new things in the last couple of years. This is a look at my personal journey, in the hopes that it will encourage and perhaps even help one or two of you.
I would absolutely love to hear back from you - does this sound familiar? What are some of the challenges you've faced? And have you emerged a stronger person because of it?
