02 Apr 2025Dave Parkin: Trusting Your Instincts01:07:30

Twenty-five years ago, Dave Parkin opened Blackbird Sound Studio in Perth, Western Australia, an independent recording studio that he own’s and manages. Since then, he’s been working in the music industry, picking up awards along the way—including 14 WAMI Producer of the Year wins and an ARIA-winning song—plus a handful of nominations. Dave’s had numerous songs chart in the ARIA rankings and a few tracks in the Triple J Hottest 100, with one reaching #2 and several others making the top 10.

Beyond the accolades, one of the most rewarding parts of his career has been working closely with bands such as Jebediah, South Summit, Old Mervs, Great Gable, and Spacey Jane, to name a few, on song structure, arrangement, and helping shape their sound. He’s had the privilege of contributing to the launch of many successful artists, both independent and signed to record labels, guiding them through the creative process and bringing their music to life.

Despite all that, Dave has kept a pretty low-key online presence and hasn’t relied much on advertising— he’s always preferred to let the music speak for itself, and people find him through the work he’s done. More than anything, Dave loves what he does and feels lucky to have built a career around it. These days, he’s found a better balance between work and family, trading the long, late hours of his 20s for a more sustainable routine. Making music is still his passion, but so is spending time with his wife and kids.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL LEARN:

  • Getting started with running a studio
  • How to find good bands to trust you with working on their music
  • Being open to experimentation
  • Dealing with impostor syndrome
  • How to create clarity with effects
  • Automating effects during the tracking stage
  • When to use reverb vs. delay
  • Creating movement in a mix through sidechained effects
  • Distorting drums
  • His trick for tracking big, fat snare sounds

26 Jan 2022Dusty Wakeman: Choosing the Right Microphones01:10:45

Dusty Wakeman has worn a lot of hats – producer, engineer, musician, and owner/manager of Los Angeles based Mad Dog Studios. His work with Dwight Yoakam, Lucinda Williams, Roy Orbison, Michelle Shocked, Buck Owens and many other artists has helped generate a number of multi-platinum and Grammy-winning records.

Growing up in Texas, Dusty developed a love of the whole process of making music, from touring in groups to engineering records and designing his own studios. After moving to Los Angeles in 1977 to pursue a career as a bass player, he took a “temporary” gig at West L.A. Music, where he became store manager and stayed for three years. In 1980 he founded Mad Dog Studios, which he owned and operated for 28 years.

Dusty discovered Royer mics in 2000, caught ribbon fever, and picked up a number of Royers for Mad Dog Studios, leading to a close relationship with Royer Labs. Looking for a ‘lifestyle change’ after 25 years of constant engineering, producing records and touring, Dusty came across the prototype for the MA-200. His enthusiasm for the new brand led to Dusty joining Mojave Audio in September of 2005. His in-depth knowledge of recording, understanding of the importance of choosing the right microphone for the job, and his ability to share his experience make Dusty an invaluable asset to Mojave Audio. Dusty serves as President of Mojave Audio.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL LEARN ABOUT:

  • Imposter syndrome: What to do when you’re feeling doubt in your abilities as an engineer
  • Mic combinations to get the ultimate guitar sound
  • When to use ribbon microphones instead of dynamics or condensers.
  • How to use low pass filters to create more clarity in your mix
  • What makes one microphone better than another
  • What to look out for when buying microphones
  • A great resource for being able to shootout hundreds of microphones
  • Tube mics: Are they worth the hype?

19 Feb 2025Eric Valentine: Giving Instruments Clarity in a Mix01:12:34

Eric Valentine’s journey into music started with a $50 drum set from a garage sale and drum lessons at age nine. By 12, he was experimenting with home recordings, and by high school, he had a 4-track recorder and was recording local musicians. At 17, he and a friend launched a 16-track studio in a garage, advertising $10 per hour for recording sessions—marking the start of his professional career.

His big break came when his band, T-Ride, signed with Hollywood Records under the condition that he produce and engineer their album. Instead of renting an expensive studio, he upgraded their own space, investing in high-end gear. Though the band didn’t achieve major success, it led Eric to focus on producing local artists. Over the next few years, he worked with rapper Paris, recorded Joe Satriani, and ultimately helped launch the careers of Smash Mouth and Third Eye Blind. He co-produced Third Eye Blind’s debut album and took a DIY approach with Smash Mouth, finishing their album before they even had a deal—leading to their signing with Interscope just days after mastering.

With multiple hit records under his belt, Eric relocated from the Bay Area to Los Angeles, closing his legendary “H.O.S.” Studios to establish Barefoot Recording. There, he produced major albums for Queens of the Stone Age, Good Charlotte, Taking Back Sunday, Maroon 5, Slash, and Gwen Stefani, accumulating nearly 65 million album sales worldwide. In 2010, he expanded into recording equipment design, launching Undertone Audio to create high-end studio gear, including a Class A console with a revolutionary EQ.

Most recently, Eric moved his studio setup to Vermont, where he spent four years building a state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot recording facility. Now settled in, he’s focusing on his latest passion: The Audionaut Institute, an educational platform where audio enthusiasts can explore the art of recording and production.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:

  • Learning on your own vs. having a mentor
  • Working with Queens Of The Stone Age, Good Charlotte, and Third Eye Blind
  • Establishing the vision of a project
  • How he gets big, natural-sounding drums
  • Using minimal micing techniques
  • How to tune drums to the key of a song
  • The beauty of imperfection
  • Arranging your tracks so they practically EQ themselves
  • Making extreme mix moves
  • Creating movement, energy, and width in a mix
  • Tips for getting the low-end right
  • His delay trick for controlling low-end headroom
