18 Dec 2024# 45 SEO for designers: Why audience comes before keywords with Nina Clapperton00:58:00

Tired of hearing about keywords when it comes to SEO? That’s not the only thing that SEO is all about. SEO isn’t just about embedding the right keywords into your website. It’s also about deeply understanding your audience and speaking their language.

In this episode, I sit down with SEO expert Nina Clapperton who shares how to attract the right clients by focusing on what your audience is actually searching for. She breaks down the steps to creating content that gets found by Google and resonates with potential clients—without attracting DIYers who just want free tips.

What you’ll learn in this episode:

  • Why focusing on your audience matters more than keywords in SEO.
  • How organic traffic brings in warmer leads compared to ads.
  • The importance of having a website you own and control.
  • The power of long-tail keywords and how they can help you rank higher.
  • How to create content that filters out DIYers and attracts clients ready to hire.
  • Tips for building high-quality backlinks that boost your site’s credibility.

Memorable quotes from Nina:

  • "Audience is the cornerstone of SEO. Keywords are just filtering your language so that people can follow what you're talking about."
  • "I like to think of it as someone literally asking you for what they want with organic traffic. They are stumbling upon you naturally."
  • "When you're relying entirely on referrals, you're not in control of your traffic sources, and that means it could vanish at any moment."

Key highlights:

  • Audience-first SEO: Nina emphasizes that everything starts with understanding your audience’s pain points and questions, not just keywords.
  • 10 blog posts strategy: You don’t need hundreds of blog posts to rank well. With just 10 well-written, targeted posts, you can start making a major impact.
  • Backlinks as PR: Forget shady backlink strategies. Nina shares how to approach backlinks like PR, building relationships with others in your industry for real results.
  • Long-tail keywords: Why niche, specific keywords are more valuable than high-volume ones for interior designers.
  • Optimizing for local search: Nina explains the importance of optimizing for your city or region, especially for location-based services like interior design.

15 Jan 2025#47 Building a strategic website that attracts and converts with Cathleen Barnes00:36:22

Ah, how we all love gorgeous websites! I’m always admiring beautifully designed sites of my peers, competitors and interior designers that I serve. The smart navigation, bold graphics, sexy fonts! But just like function is vital  to a well designed home, so is strategy to a website.

Is your website for your interior design business bringing in clients? A beautiful design might catch the eye, but if your site isn’t strategic, it’s not doing the heavy lifting. Today, we’re getting into what really makes a website work – data-driven strategy and purposeful design that actually leads visitors to take action.

Joining me is Cathleen Barnes, a website designer who’s all about results. She shares how interior designers can elevate their websites with strategic design to attract high-end clients who are ready to hire. If you’re ready for a website that goes beyond looks and starts converting, this episode is for you.

What you’ll learn in this episode

  • Why most designer websites miss out on conversions and how to change that

  • A powerful approach to ensure your website works as a strategic tool, not just an online portfolio

  • How high-end clients evaluate websites differently—and what yours needs to stand out

  • Strategies for a website that both attracts and converts, taking visitors from interest to action

  • The importance of case studies and intentional content for building credibility

Memorable quotes:

  • "Websites work in a very similar fashion... yes, they should be beautiful, but there are so many pieces that make a website strategic."

  • "An inspector tool... shows me exactly what they're doing, what they're clicking, and where they're getting stuck."

  • "When you know your ideal client, you can craft focused messaging around that. They’ll read it and say, 'I get you.'"

  • "I recommend turning your portfolio into a case study... so high-end clients see the full process and results."

  • "If your website isn't getting at least one out of every hundred visitors to take action, you’re missing out."

  • "Generic testimonials are boring... they don't tell me anything about the outcomes."

Key highlights:

  • Understanding your ideal client is key to a high-converting website.

  • A strategic website has a purpose for every page, not just aesthetics.

  • Simple, purposeful navigation keeps visitors engaged.

  • Transform your portfolio into case studies to showcase the design process.

  • Effective use of call-to-actions can increase conversions.

  • Integrating inspector tools gives insight into user behavior on the site.

  • Use specific testimonials to build trust, rather than generic ones.

02 Apr 2025#56 What to do to get featured in the media with Liana Zavo00:38:39

Some designers get featured in magazines, land podcast interviews, and attract high-visibility collaborations—while others with equally beautiful work are barely noticed.

Here’s the thing.. It’s not always about talent. Often, it comes down to how well you tell your story.

In this episode, I’m chatting with a publicist Liana Zavo, CEO of ZavoMedia PR Group and a Forbes thought leader who has helped thousands of founders get seen, heard, and remembered. We’re talking about creating origin stories that get attention—not just from your audience, but from media outlets, collaborators, and even your dream clients. Whether you’re pitching yourself for press or just trying to stand out in a crowded market, this conversation will shift the way you think about your personal brand.

  • How to use past challenges as credibility—not baggage
  • The secret to tailoring your story for clients vs. media vs. partners

  • "I’m a college dropout and a single mom. That’s part of my story. It doesn’t make me less credible—it makes me real."

  • Liana’s own origin story, including how she turned health challenges into fuel

25 Sep 2024#34 Three things to do before a website rebrand00:19:44

If you’ve been thinking about a website rebrand—whether you're hiring a professional or attempting to DIY—it’s not just about refreshing your design or adding new copy. Before the visuals or the words, there are three essential things you must get clear on to make your rebrand successful.

In this episode of Marketing for Designers, I’m talking about the foundational steps you need to take before you start working with a website designer or tackling that rebrand on your own.

Here’s the must-do prep work that ensures your new site not only looks amazing but resonates with your dream clients and sets you apart. Trust me, skipping these steps could lead to wasted time, money, and an uninspiring website.

What you’ll learn in this episode:

  • How to identify your ideal audience before starting the rebrand.
  • Why defining your Unique Value Proposition (UVP) is essential for standing out.
  • The difference between features and benefits—and why benefits resonate more.
  • How to make your messaging emotionally engaging to attract dream clients.
  • How to align your UVP and benefits with both your website copy and design.
  • How to avoid wasting time and money by rebranding without clear messaging.
  • Why refining these elements upfront ensures a successful rebrand and beyond.

Memorable quotes:

  • "Your website is often the first touchpoint a potential client has with your brand. It’s not just about looking beautiful; it’s about being crystal clear on who you're talking to, why they should choose you, and what they stand to gain by working with you."
  • "A unique value proposition isn’t just a catchy tagline—it's the thing that sets you apart from every other interior designer out there. It’s what makes you the right choice for your ideal clients."
  • "You need to show your prospects the benefits they’ll experience from working with you—whether it's peace of mind, a beautifully functional space, or more time to enjoy their lives."
  • "When you clearly communicate the benefits of working with you, it builds trust with your audience. They know you understand their needs, and they’ll feel more confident in choosing you over someone else."

Let’s not beat around the bush…interior design is expensive. You know it, and your clients know it. Even if your clients don’t say it out loud, they’re probably thinking it. Most homeowners view interior design as a luxury or fear that the costs will spiral out of control. So cost is a BIG concern for your clients. In this episode, we’ll tackle how to address these pricing objections head-on with smart, strategic website content. From tackling it on a killer Services page to leveraging your Portfolio and FAQ sections, I’ll show you how to communicate the value of your expertise and position your services as an investment, not just an expense.

What you’ll learn in this episode

  • How to overcome pricing objections with strategic website copy.
  • Why showcasing value is more important than listing prices.
  • The power of case studies and testimonials to justify your pricing.
  • Blog ideas that educate clients on the cost of NOT hiring a designer.
  • Essential FAQs to tackle client hesitations about costs.

  • "Position your services as the solution to avoid costly mistakes. Highlight how your expertise prevents overspending, delays, or buying items that don’t work in the space."

Now, back to the episode…

Interviewing your clients is exactly how I get the richest, most insightful and interesting audience insights when I write website copy for my interior design clients. The result? Website copy that deeply resonates with ideal clients.

Client interviews, for a professional copywriter like myself, is a non-negotiable part of my copywriting process. I don’t write a word of copy without gather audience data first. I even developed a signature framework REVEAL - my proprietary process for strategic website copy rooted in audience insights. And in this episode, I’m giving you a glimpse into why I collect audience insights through client interviews and the types of insights I look for.

Insights collected through customer interviews not only get you incredibly evocative customer testimonials, but they also help you gain an in-depth understanding of your clients’ unique challenges, desires and aspirations.

Once you have those insights, and weave them into your copy – your website ends up speaking directly to your clients’ experiences and expectations. By understanding your audience’s pain points, desires, and specific language they use, you transform your website from just a story about your brand into a meaningful dialogue that resonates with your ideal clients.

What you’ll learn on this episode:

  • Why audience insights matter<
  • What types of audience insights you should gather before writing your website copy
  • Examples of pain points and aspirations your clients may have
  • The role of client interviews
  • What to do after you’ve gathered customer data

26 Mar 2025#55 How to make your personal brand work for you with Valerie Morris00:49:29

If you’ve ever thought, “My work should speak for itself,” or cringed at the idea of showing your face on social—this episode is your permission slip to stop hiding.

Because the truth is, your personal brand already exists. Whether or not you’ve built it intentionally, your audience is making assumptions about who you are and what it’s like to work with you.

And when you're trying to attract high-end clients who trust your vision and don't second-guess your decisions, those assumptions matter.

In this episode, I'm talking with Valerie Morris, a digital marketing strategist, author, and speaker who helps professionals build authority and show up as the expert. With a degree in architecture and nearly 15 years in content marketing, she gets what it's like to be in the design world—and how to stand out in a saturated space.

We talk about what personal brand really means, how to show up online without feeling self-promotional, and why LinkedIn might be the biggest missed opportunity in your entire marketing strategy.

Whether you’re 2 years into your business or 10, this episode will challenge the way you think about visibility, positioning, and the kind of content that actually builds trust with decision-makers.

What you’ll learn in this episode:

    • What "authority-building content" is—and how to create it

    • Simple profile tweaks to make your LinkedIn actually work for you
    • The type of content that builds credibility (without being salesy)
    • How to use personal stories strategically to connect and stand out

    Memorable quotes from Valerie:

“Everyone has a personal brand, whether you invest in it or not.”“Your personal brand is just your reputation—what people think about you when they see your name or face.”“If you’re not showcasing your values or personality, people only see what’s out there. And sometimes that’s not enough.”“The algorithm on LinkedIn is friendlier. People are there for business. That’s what makes it powerful.”“Authority-building content gives people subconscious signals that you know what you’re talking about.”

    Key highlights:

    • Valerie’s unexpected journey from architecture to marketing—and how her design background informs her approach
    • The biggest mistake designers make with content (and how to avoid it)

    • The power of showing—not just telling—your values and expertise
    • Why even your personal Facebook account can be a quiet marketing machine

Most interior designers struggle to articulate what makes them different—and that’s a problem when you’re trying to stand out in a competitive market. If you can’t clearly communicate your unique value, your dream clients won’t see why they should choose you over someone else.

From producing stories for Google and Steve Harvey to working with top interior designers, Jude knows how to bring compelling narratives to life.

If you’ve ever felt like your marketing sounds like everyone else’s, or you’re unsure what your true differentiator even is, this episode will give you the clarity and confidence to own your story and communicate it effectively.

    • How to use storytelling to attract high-end clients who align with your values

    Memorable quotes from Jude:

    • "In the same way that every business has a differentiator, every person has a differentiator."
    • "The only limitation you have is the one that you create."
    • "If you want people to believe in what makes you unique, you have to believe it, own it, say it, and then share it."
    • "Hearing something a thousand times is not as powerful as seeing it once for yourself."
    • "Your audience enjoys hearing your story again—it reminds them why they trust you."

What if publishing a book could elevate your design business, attract premium clients, and make you stand out in a crowded market? Don’t we all want that?! Most interior designers think about websites, social media, and industry publication features when it comes to marketing and spreading the word about their brand. But in this episode, I’m going to tell you about another way. We’ll explore a unique and powerful strategy with a short business book publishing expert Mike Capuzzi.

Mike is the founder of Bite-Sized Books and an author of 20 books, including The 100-Page Book and The Magic of Short Books. He’s helped thousands of business owners, CEOs, and entrepreneurs, including local service providers like interior designers, differentiate themselves through short, helpful books. These “Shooks” are designed to be read in an hour but can have a massive impact on your visibility, credibility, and ability to attract the right clients.

In this episode, Mike shares how interior designers can leverage a short book as a lead generation tool, a client magnet, and a way to demonstrate authority in the industry. Whether you’ve dreamed of being an author or never considered it until now, this conversation will spark some big ideas.

What you’ll learn in this episode:

    • Why short books are more effective than traditional ones for marketing your services.
    • How publishing a book can attract higher-quality, more affluent clients.
    • Practical tips for deciding on a book topic that resonates with your audience.
    • How to use a short book as a lead magnet for your email list and client base.
    • The proven framework for creating and leveraging a short book in your business.

    Episode highlights:

    • Why publish a book? Mike explains the historical and marketing advantages of being a published author, especially for service-based professionals like interior designers.
    • Short and sweet: Discover why short books (100 pages or less) work better than traditional books for attracting and engaging potential clients.
    • Book-worthy topics: Tips for choosing a topic based on client FAQs, your unique design philosophy, or your “special sauce.”
    • Lead generation strategies: How to use your book as a referral tool, a lead magnet, or even a welcome gift for new clients.
    • Mike’s framework: A step-by-step recipe for writing and publishing a short book, including how to create pathways for prospective clients to take action.
    • Real-world example: Hear how a professional artist used a short book to attract art commissions and how interior designers could apply a similar approach.

    Memorable quotes:

    • "Books have been used by business owners as far back as the 1800s. There's something special about books—unlike most typical marketing materials, they don't end up in the recycle bin."
    • "A book gives you credibility and a perceived difference between a non-author and an author."
    • "If someone can jump on a plane, say from Toronto to Chicago, and read your book in an hour, and because of its design and structure, it encourages them to reach out to you—then it’s a win-win."
    • "We're not talking about the Encyclopedia of A to Z interior design. We’re talking about a subset of interior design, something actionable that helps readers make smarter decisions."
    • "A short book is like a little soldier working for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

20 Mar 2024#7: Unlocking secrets of your website visitors' behavior with Patricia Alix-Villa 00:30:05

Great website design goes beyond the beautiful aesthetic. To convert visitors on your website, you need a deep understanding of psychological principles (a.k.a. how do they behave online, what information are they looking for, how they make decisions, what do they pay attention to, etc). My guest to talk about all that is Patricia Alix-Villa, the owner of Fancy Girl Design Studio.

In her role as a brand designer and website designer, Patricia is known for her ability to create visually stunning websites, but her real genius lies in her strategic application of psychological insights to foster engagement and inspire action from site visitors.

Patricia and I have worked on multiple projects together and today I get to chat with her on how she leverages the principles of psychology to get website visitors to take action on your website.

    In this episode you’ll learn:

    • How the psychology of user behavior is relevant to web design and content
    • How your website visitors interact with your messaging
    • How to display information on your core pages

I’m not a fan of “marketing jargon” or “marketing speak” so I want to shed some light on what each one of these terms mean so that you as an interior designer can use them like a PRO marketer.

While they might seem similar and mean the same thing, recognizing how messaging, copy and content all play a unique role in your marketing strategy can really impact your interior design business and how you show up in the eyes of your clients.

What you’ll learn in today’s episode:

    • The difference between messaging, copy and content

    • The WHY, WHAT, and the HOW of your brand
    • Why articulating your messaging strategy is critical and how it’s different from copy and content

26 Feb 2025#51 Stop dreading networking and start making genuine connections with Rachel Rozen00:47:54

Networking shouldn’t feel forced or transactional—but for many interior designers, it does. If you’ve ever dreaded introducing yourself at an industry event or struggled to explain what makes you different too a vendor, this episode is for you.

I sit down with Rachel Rozen, a networking expert and connection coach, to talk about the biggest networking mistakes designers make and how to make networking feel effortless. We cover how to build relationships that actually lead to referrals, how to confidently talk about what you do, and how to follow up without it feeling awkward.

If networking feels icky, this conversation will change the way you approach it forever.

What you’ll learn in this episode:

    • Why networking feels awkward for many designers—and how to change that
    • How to introduce yourself in a way that sparks curiosity and referrals

    • How to make networking work for you—even if you’re an introvert

🗣️ "If people don’t know what you do, they can’t help you. So how do you talk about yourself when someone asks you, ‘Hey, what do you do for work?’ If you don’t have a good way to talk about it in a concise manner, people aren’t going to know how to help you."

🗣️ "You’re networking all the time, every day. You don’t have to necessarily go to an event to network. You’re doing it when you go to the grocery store. You never know when you're going to crack a conversation with somebody."

    Key highlights:

    • The #1 mistake designers make when networking—and how to avoid it
    • How to craft a compelling introduction that makes people remember you
    • A simple follow-up strategy that keeps relationships warm
    • How to navigate industry events with confidence (no more standing in the corner!)

28 Feb 2024#4: The 7 biggest mistakes interior designers make on their websites00:13:59

If your website isn’t attracting your ideal clients, or you feel the messaging on your core pages is not resonating with the right audience emotionally, you’ll love today’s episode. As a copywriter for interior designers, I visit hundreds of websites every month when I write website copy for my clients. And in my research, I found several patterns - common mistakes designers make on their website.

    In this episode you’ll learn:

    • The 7 biggest mistakes you may be making
    • Tips to avoid making these costly mistakes
    • The small tweaks you can make to your messaging for a big impact
    • How to connect emotionally to your audience
    • How to gain prospect’s trust through strategic copy
    • And so much more

    Memorable Quote:

"The impact of your messaging gets diluted if you’re trying to speak to everyone. It results in generic copy that fails to resonate deeply with any one particular group. And the problem with that - in not understanding your audience client - your copy does not speak directly to the needs, desires, and pain points of your target audience.”

02 Oct 2024#35 How to use storytelling to build a memorable brand with Sara Lohse00:48:42

Storytelling isn’t just a marketing buzzword—it’s a proven way to build authentic connections that keep your clients engaged and coming back for more. If you want to get better at marketing, get better at storytelling.

In today’s episode of Marketing for Designers, I’ve got a special guest Sara Lohse, founder of Favorite Daughter Media, to discuss how personal stories can be your most powerful tool in building a memorable, compelling brand.

Sara chats with me about why stories resonate so powerfully with people, how to find the right ones to tell, and why storytelling isn’t just for writers or creatives—it’s for every designer who wants to form a deeper connection with their clients.

Tune to this episode and you’ll get to hear Sara’s personal story that she has shared with her audience many times to humanize her brand and build deeper business connections.

If you're ready to elevate your marketing strategy with stories that truly resonate, this episode is a must-listen.

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

  • Why storytelling is essential in marketing: Sara explains the neuroscience behind why our brains crave stories and why they’re so effective in building client relationships.
  • How to choose the right stories: Tips on how to pick stories from your personal and professional life that align with your business goals.
  • The 4 key elements of a compelling story: Sara shares her storytelling framework—relatability, details, emotions, and the unexpected.
  • How to be vulnerable without oversharing: Understanding why putting yourself in the story helps build stronger client relationships.
  • Practical tips for incorporating stories in your social media and website copy: How to make your stories engaging, emotional, and memorable.
  • Memorable quotes:

  • “People want stories. Our brains are wired for storytelling. It was the way that people communicated even before we had language.”

  • “Your stories don’t have to be massive. They don’t have to be newsworthy. Connections come from shared experiences. The story that I told that changed my life was about a really embarrassing tattoo, and I found value in it.”
  • “I purposely, while everyone else is sharing their highlight reels, I share my blooper reel.”
  • “Treat AI like an assistant, not like an employee. An assistant is there to make your work easier. An employee is there to do its own work.”

  • 30 Oct 2024#38 Video, SEO, and outsourcing marketing like a PRO with Kirsten Graham00:33:27

What if the secret to scaling your interior design business is not just creating video content but outsourcing the work? And not just outsourcing to anyone but to a virtual assistant that specializes in marketing? I didn’t even realize there was such a thing as a Marketing Virtual Assistant (VA) until I chatted with today’s guest.

Today’s episode is a masterclass in getting the help you need without sacrificing quality.

    • How to create compelling video content specifically for interior design clients
    • Key elements to consider when hiring a marketing virtual assistant for video, social media, and other marketing tasks
    • The importance of documented SOPs (standard operating procedures) for a smoother outsourcing experience

    • SOPs streamline outsourcing: Documenting workflows through SOPs can help onboard new team members more efficiently, allowing interior designers to focus on client-facing work.
    • Client-specific content strategies: Kirsten shares the importance of targeting content toward your ideal client, so they connect with your messaging and style, avoiding mismatches.

08 Jan 2025#46 Why your marketing isn’t converting (and how to fix it) with Gee Ranasinha00:42:42

Can marketing get any more complicated?! You’re out there, following all the advice, tweaking your messaging, trying every new platform and channel, yet somehow… nothing. Results fall flat. Clients don’t bite. Sound familiar?

In this episode, I’ve brought in Gee Ranasinha, CEO of KEXINO and marketing veteran, to reveal the hard truths behind why typical marketing advice doesn’t work for interior designers—and exactly how to change that.

If you’re ready to break through the noise, get noticed, and connect with clients who actually get you, this conversation is a must-listen.

What you’ll learn in this episode:

    • Why the traditional marketing advice might be sabotaging your efforts

    • How to connect with your audience in ways that actually inspire action

    • Practical tips for uncovering what your clients really want from you

    • The biggest questions to ask when hiring a marketing expert to avoid common pitfalls

    • How to create brand awareness and drive consistent leads over time

    Memorable quotes:

    • "People are influenced by their emotions when they're making decisions—including buying decisions—positively or negatively."

    • "A lot of people say, 'I know my customers, I know them better than they know themselves.' They're deluding themselves."

    • "There isn't a single client on the planet who said, 'You know what, I want to spend money on an interior designer.' What they want is a space to be welcoming, to fill a particular function. That's what they're looking for."

    • "The only way you can get true, honest, impartial, unbiased data in terms of the buying habits of your audience is to speak to them and ask questions to actually get to the nitty-gritty."

    • "Do what you said you were going to do when you said you were going to do it. Just doing that puts you at the top 20th percentile of every single person in your industry because the bar is set so low."

    Key highlights:

    • Find out the pitfalls of “tactic-first” marketing and why every strategy should start with a clear understanding of your audience.

    • Discover how to create marketing that resonates with your audience’s everyday frustrations, not just their end goals.

    • Gain insights into building client trust by showing up reliably in every interaction—no matter how small.

19 Mar 2025#54 How to grow your email list with Kendra Corman00:29:30

Relying solely on social media to attract new clients to your interior design business is a risky move. One algorithm change or platform outage can derail your visibility overnight. That’s why email marketing is so important for interior designers. It’s the one channel you fully control, allowing you to nurture relationships with potential clients and stay top of mind when they’re ready to hire.

In this episode, I sit down with Kendra Corman, a marketing strategist, email expert, and author of Mastering AI in Communications. With over 20 years of experience, including her time as the Jeep Advertising Manager, Kendra now runs H2H Consulting and helps business owners simplify their marketing, leverage AI, and make email work for them. She’s sharing five practical, non-salesy ways interior designers can build an email list that actually generates business.

If you’ve been ignoring email marketing because it feels overwhelming (or worse—like an outdated tactic), this episode will change your mind.

What you’ll learn in this episode:

    • Why email marketing is still one of the most effective ways to stay top of mind
    • How to grow your email list without feeling like a pushy marketer
    • Five places to add an email opt-in link that you’re probably overlooking
    • The secret to writing a compelling email sign-up call-to-action (hint: it’s not ‘Join my newsletter’)
    • Why your website’s 404 page is an untapped list-building opportunity
    • How to leverage social media to grow your list without relying on the algorithm
    • Why short, simple lead magnets convert better than long, complicated ones

    Memorable quotes from Kendra:

    • "Your email list is the only audience you truly own. Social media can disappear overnight, but your emails land directly in your audience’s inbox."
    • "Never, ever say ‘Join my newsletter.’ Nobody wants more emails. Tell them what’s in it for them."
    • "You don’t need thousands of subscribers to see results. A small, engaged list is way more valuable than a big, unengaged one."
    • "Your website’s 404 page is an underrated list-building tool. Don’t let it go to waste."
    • "Consistency is key. Whether you email weekly or monthly, set a schedule and stick to it."

    Key highlights:

    • Why email marketing builds trust better than social media
    • The best places to include an email sign-up link that most designers overlook
    • How to frame your email list as something valuable (instead of just another newsletter)
    • How to use social media strategically to drive email sign-ups
    • How to make list-building feel natural through real conversations
    • Why a short and simple lead magnet often works better than a detailed guide
    • How often to ask people to join your email list on social media without sounding repetitive

24 Jul 2024#25 Audit your website copy like a PRO00:31:41

How effective is your website for your interior design business? Ever had your site audited by a professional copywriter? Wanna learn what to look for when auditing your own website like a PRO? I’m not talking about the visual side and functionality. I’m talking about WORDS or CONTENT on your website. I’m going to teach you my web copy audit method I use as a copywriter and messaging strategist that works exclusively with designers.

But first, are you on my email list? In case you didn’t know, I send weekly actionable marketing advice and tips to interior designers every single Friday to help you dramatically improve your online presence and positioning! I’d love it if you join my community of designers! Sign up here.

    Now, back to the episode…

Looking at your interior design website from the lens of a copywriter is different than looking at it from the lens of a web designer. Web designers look at design elements, fonts, the way the copy is organized on a page, loading speed, amongst many other important things.

As a copywriter, first and foremost, I look for strategic messaging and emotional resonance with your ideal audience. I ask things like…

    • What’s the first thing your website visitors see when they land on your homepage?
    • What do they see next?
    • Are you able to capture their attention with the first words you’ve got displayed above the fold?
    • Do the words resonate?
    • Do they make your audience feel a connection?
    • Does your content attract your ideal audience, or just about anyone?
    • Does the content compel your website visitors to act and reach out?
    • Does your website effectively tell your story?
    • Does it show the value you bring to your clients?
    • Is your differentiator highlighted in copy?

I ask these, and so many other questions when I undergo a website copy audit for my interior design clients.

What you’ll learn on this episode:

    • What to do BEFORE you audit your website
    • What information about your ideal audience you need to know before assessing your website’s effectiveness
    • What’s a user journey map and why is it important

    Now, back to the episode…

Did you know that some of the most successful interior design brands out there are known for their process. That means their process IS what sets them apart.

If you have a process that’s different, even if it’s a little different than a typical design process, then you too can set your business part based on your process.

And you should! Why? Because when you differentiate your design brand based on a solid process, you flag credibility and expertise. You show up like a confident expert who can be trusted with significant expense like hiring an interior designer.

What you’ll learn on this episode:

    • Why you need to differentiate your interior design business in the first place (i.e. the benefits)
    • Other ways to differentiate as an interior designer (i.e. design aesthetic, picking a niche, technical expertise, etc)
    • How to differentiate your process
    • Documenting your design process and setting up systems
    • Promoting your process
