39. What is a Stock Split? (looking at the Nvidia stock split 👀)
00:27:44
Happy Fin-Friday! The Nvidia stock is now one of the big 3 in the S&P 500. We've talked about Nvidia earnings and how much the stock price has soared just this year. Now they have announced a stock split and a dividend increase from $0.04 per share to $0.10 per share. Let's demystify stock splitting. 🔮
🍰 What Is A Stock Split?
A type of corporate action that changes the cost of a stock.
Forward split - When a company increases the outstanding shares by issuing new shares to split up the value of each new share. NVDA did a 10 for 1 split (ie - if the stock is $1000 per share it is now $100 per share and everything rebalances everywhere), but companies can also do a 2 for 1, 3 for 1, etc. Say you had a sheet cake cut into 10 squares, but there are more people who want their own piece of cake, so you cut each piece in half and now there are 20 pieces of cake.
Reverse split - It's the opposite, companies do this to increase the stock price (for example, if the stock price falls below $1)
Why Is Nvidia splitting their stock?
According to their 2024 Stock Split FAQ the stock split isintended to make stock ownership more accessible to employees and investors.
Investor Relations
You can look at the investor relations for any company on their website to see the history of things like how many times they have done a stock split (for example, Nvidia has split their stock 6 times now).
Let us know your questions around stock splitting or any other investing topic. And as always, keep learning, keep earning, and keep breaking barriers!

49. Better w/ My Finance-Sis, Pt 2: Funds
00:35:06
Continuing our "Better with my Finance-Sis" Mini-Series, in part 2 we talk all about Funds! But not just the different types of investment funds, also the difference between Passive and Active Funds.
Passive Funds vs Active Funds
What is a passive fund?
Passive funds usually have lower expense ratios, with a more simplified investment strategy and less involvement of fund managers (or they can also be managed by computers).
They do still follow a benchmark and aim to deliver returns with that benchmark, and are still subject to 2 important items we need to cover called: expense ratio and tracking error.
Tracking Error Defined: Tracking error is a measure of how closely a portfolio follows the index to which it is benchmarked.
Expense Ratio Defined: The expense ratio is how much of a fund's assets are used towards administrative and other operating expenses. Because an expense ratio reduces a fund's assets, it reduces the returns investors receive.
What is an active fund?
Active funds typically feature higher expense ratios, attributed to the fund manager's in-depth research, analysis, and management efforts.

38. What is a Short Squeeze? (Talking About Meme Stocks, Hedge Funds & Market Mechanics)
00:34:35
Finally, short squeeze and gamma squeeze make sense! (Did you know gamma squeeze was a thing?)
Also, Roaring Kitty is out of hiding, remember that whole GameStop stonks thing that happened? Well apparently it's happening again with another memestock (super high risk, y'all).
We also learn about hedge funds, meme stocks, market makers and the roles played in making money off shorting stocks (or squeezing out the shorters). Check out our episode on Dark Pools for more background. We also very briefly discuss Options!
Shorting a stock is super risky. You're gambling on the failure of a company, essentially, and this tends to happen in hedge funds. A short squeeze is an event that happens when the people who are shorting stock shares have to cover the cost of the shorted stock because now the price is going up due to unforeseen demand (people suddenly buying it) and getting squeezed out of that position. It's like we always say, investing involves risk. ;)

25. Q&A: Roth IRA 101, Backdoor Roth IRA Contributions, Lifestyle Creep
00:19:07
Q&A from our listeners:
How do I do a backdoor Roth IRA contribution or conversion? How do I rollover a 401k into an IRA?
🏘
Remember in Episode 12 how we used the "building your dreamhouse" analogy to explain how to invest in the stock market? Well remember that dreamhouse during this episode and the different rooms that are your retirements accounts, in this instance. 😉
We had a fantastic chat in our latest episode, sparked by a question from Hello2jojo on TikTok. They were curious about backdoor Roth IRA contributions and rolling over a 401(k) to an IRA, which led to some really insightful discussions!
We dove into the world of backdoor Roth IRAs, breaking down how they work and what the IRS rules are all about. One key point we covered was the IRA aggregation rule, which basically treats all traditional IRA accounts as one when it comes to taxes and conversions.
We made sure to explain the difference between deductible and nondeductible contributions, stressing how important it is to understand the tax implications, especially when moving funds into a Roth IRA. Plus, we talked about the pros and cons of doing Roth IRA conversions, especially in light of your own tax situation.
Note: Roth IRAs have a 5-year aging rule.

31. Edu-action: How To Build a Brokerage CD Ladder
00:36:01
In the last episode (Ep. 30) of the Market MakeHer Podcast, we discussed how “The Fed” projects to cut interest rates 3 times by end of year. Hopefully, this means lower inflation, but it also means lower interest rates on your High Yield Savings Accounts as well.
Where can we stash our cash with higher interest rates for longer? Brokerage CDs!
One option is Brokerage CDs (certificate of deposit). This option is good especially if you have a very low risk tolerance and want to do something more than a HYSA that is a tad bit higher on the risk pyramid (Ep. 29), but still low-risk overall and locks in these higher yields we're currently seeing for a little bit longer.
We’ll teach you how to potentially lock in higher interest rates on your cash for longer with a Brokerage CD. You’ll also learn how to build a CD ladder! Watch the video on Spotify or our YouTube channel for visual how-tos. Otherwise, we’ll guide you through it with our words. 🎧🌚🌞
What is a regular CD?
CD = Certificate of Deposit (you normally see these at your bank or credit union where they offer you a decent interest rate on locking up a certain amount of cash with them for a certain amount of time, but did you know your brokerage firm can show you way more Bank CD options throughout the world and their current yields? Why only look at what your bank offers when you can see what 100s of banks are offering all at once!)
🔮 Takeaways:
CD laddering is a low-risk strategy for parking cash and locking in higher interest rates.
Brokerage CDs offer the advantage of a higher interest rate negotiated by the brokerage firm.
Building a CD ladder involves structuring investments in different timeframes to ensure regular cash flow.
Reinvesting and auto roll options allow for continuous investment and higher interest rates.
Understanding the difference between T-bills, T-bonds, T-notes, and CDs is important for making informed investment decisions.
Remember to keep your emergency fund separate - you don't want to lock up emergency money in a cage (or you can and just pay a penalty fee to get it out).

22. Q&A: Can I Have Multiple Roth IRAs? Are There 401k Rollover to IRA Tax Implications?
00:15:04
Questions on questions! We answer 3 questions from our listeners related to IRAs, 401ks, and taxes...and then Jessie asks additional questions - as usual.
Question 1: How to figure out taxes when moving 401k into a rollover IRA?
Question 2: Can you control how your employer 401k gets invested? (side note: you can borrow money from yourself!)
Question 3: Can you have multiple IRAs?
When moving a 401k into a rollover IRA, it is important to be aware of the tax implications. Consult IRS resources and consider seeking advice from a tax professional.
Employer-sponsored 401k plans often offer lower fees and benefits, so it is generally recommended to roll over the 401k into a rollover IRA when leaving the employer.
Individuals can have control over their employer 401k investments by choosing from the available investment options. It is important to consider risk tolerance and investment goals when making investment decisions.
It is possible to have multiple IRAs, but there are limits on contributions. Individuals should be aware of the IRS rules and income limitations when contributing to multiple IRAs.

42. AI Under Power Grid Pressure: The Price to Energy Ratio Risk
00:28:20
In this episode we re-visit our AI Portfolio and Investment Thesis that we discussed back in Episode 21, but with a new emerging headwind. According to our very own Jess Inskip, "the real ‘P/E Risk’ isn't overhyped price to earnings. The risk is price to energy." (Get it? That's a P/E Ratio joke 👻)
AI Investing
Most of us are invested in AI, whether we know it or not, because the S&P 500 is mainly technology, and according to Yahoo Finance the S&P 500 is 31% technology, with 29.5% of that being only 7 stocks! (The Mag 7 or Magnificent 7)
How Much Electricity Does Generative AI Use?
Nvidia (NVDA) valuations are justified as the hyperscalers are top customers and we are seeing real earnings at incredible profit margins. The earnings potential makes sense. However, the energy consumption and subsequent pressure represents the real risk. Blackwell chips have not even made its way to market yet – each Blackwell AI GPU sold by Nvidia consumes up to 1200 watts of power, so 3.5mn of them would consume 1.8GW of power in the US alone. (Consensus estimates 3.5b in GPU sales by 2027).
Validate Your Investment Thesis (What you eat, eats.)
Look at the root of the problem with all of this AI grid pressure and see where the solutions might be (as in which companies are coming up with solutions for this bigger issue). "Sustainable AI" is still in its infancy, but maybe there are some companies out there that are using AI for good and to help come up with solutions to some of these issues?
AI Opportunities (but do your homework)
The grid pressure is a longer-term risk, it does not mean the AI story has peaked yet. AI build out cycle still in play: Opportunities still exist benefiting NVDA, AVGO, MRVL, AMD, and MU. Q1 earnings told us that capex spending is only increasing. Not adding more here, rather maintaining positioning. You can look into Copper and Uranium ETFs as well, just consider your personal ethics in investing and how that comes into play for you and which companies' success you truly want to be invested in (remember, when you buy a stock you are not giving money to the company directly,

It's a Stock Market Tea Party, and you're invited! 🍵🍵
In our Feb. 2024 SMU, Jess serves Jessie the tea on the recent earnings season (the winners of positive earnings and growth in the market last quarter with many companies beating expectations) and they specifically focus on Nvidia's impressive earnings and its role in the AI industry.
The hosts also discuss the performance of consumer staples and consumer discretionary sectors. They explore analyst price targets and valuation, as well as the potential for building an AI portfolio.
Finally, we touch on the impact of record profits on employees and prices. The conversation covers topics such as inflation, real wages, employment, housing market, interest rates, and the Federal Reserve's policy.
Stay till the end for our silly, yet very real, stock market headlines. 😉

36. Refresher: We are Paying Attention to Bonds Again
00:28:20
The bond market has always been relevant, but it hasn't mattered as much since the Great Financial Crisis (GFC) - that's when the housing market collapsed in 2008. When we have a financial crisis, there is a fiscal policy response and monetary policy response to stimulate the economy. Right now we are in restrictive fed territory, they have raised rates to levels not seen since the GFC. Now the big market question is: when will they lower rates? If they do it too soon, it will reignite inflation, too late, it will tip us into a recession. The Fed's action affect the front end of the curve... when they lower and raise rates. WHICH AFFECTS YOU. (and that HYSA). You need to understand the yield curve and what de-inversion would mean.
Is The Fed going to tip us into a recession? What does that even mean? We've been seeing your questions around this and more after our recent episodes on the FOMC meetings.
Let's revisit how the yield curve works so we can all understand how the stock market and bond market is affected by The Fed's actions and what an inverted yield curve means for your money.
*This episode was recorded back in November 2023, so some things mentioned are related to that month, but overall still relevant to what's happening now.*

35. What Is CPI, PPI & PCE Price Index (Indices) in Fed Speak - Decoded
00:32:33
Come with us as we leap through the gallows and levitate down WallStreet. 🔮 Today we're discussing the most recent FOMC Press Conference led by the Hawkish Fed Chairman, Jerome Powell, and what it all means when he talks about the CPI & PCE Price Index. There's also a quick SMU (stock market update).
New Vocabulary Word: Tapering
Tapering is a monetary policy used by the Federal Reserve to phase out or reduce the number of assets purchased each month. Listen for more info.
Inflation Is Still Too High, When Are Interest Rates Getting Cut?
Remember in Episode 30 when we talked about how The Fed is projecting to cut rates 3 times this year (and how that's good for getting loans and lower CC interest rates, but bad for our HYSA)? Well now the Federal Reserve is not confident enough in the data to cut those interest rates just yet. They're being left at 5.25-5.5% (for the banks, but then we will still be seeing higher loan rates).
The Fed's Dual Mandate
Papa Powell stated that maximum employment and stable inflation at 2% is still the objective.

28. $AAPL Stock Impacts & Tools to Compare ETFs ($VOO vs $VTI)
00:28:52
Let's talk about what's going on with the $AAPL stock and also learn how to compare ETFs, like $VTI vs $VOO, with a tool! You'll want to watch the video about 10 minutes in, but if you can't watch it, we do describe everything we're analyzing.
$AAPL Stock Is Down, But The Market Is Up?
We know that Apple is one of the biggest stocks or companies in the S&P 500, which is the index we use to measure the stock market (check out episode 2), so then how is $AAPL down 8% and the S&P 500 is up 8% year to date (March 7, 2024)?
Magnificent 7 = Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG; GOOGL), Amazon, Apple, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla
Indices/Index: The big 3 (S&P 500, NASDAQ, Dow Jones) are how we measure the stock market, but we mainly look at S&P 500 to see how the market is doing
ETF = exchange traded fund (we have an episode on ETFs and Mutual Funds if you want a refresher).
Fiscal Policy - the government using taxation and spending to influence the economy. We also talk about the CHIPS Act in regard to how fiscal policy can affect stock price.

15. What's Going on with Inflation? (Inflation Explained)
00:28:55
Let's talk about the inflation situation. What is inflation? What causes inflation? And why we invest in the stock market (hint hint: to outpace inflation).
Is Inflation Going Down?
Inflation was 8.9% in the summer of 2022, and even though it's currently around 3.7% as of September 2023, we are still feeling the lag effects. The memes talking about the struggles a lot of us are facing are plentiful! There's definitely a trickle effect happening.
Different Theories and Measurements
We talk about CPI, PPI, Cost Push Theory, Demand Pull Theory, Built In Inflation and the Fed. We also talk about all the factors that led to our current inflation situation and where we see it going.
Let us know your thoughts or questions around what inflation is and how it affects the stock market and don't forget to check out the episode equity on the Ep. 15 page of www.marketmakeherpodcast.com

47. The Recipe for a Market Sell-Off: Carry Trade, SAHM Rule, Recession Fear
00:29:30
The stock market has been having quite the week since our last episode on the Fed’s decision to NOT do a rate cut and the resulting effects of the not-so-great unemployment numbers that came out last Friday.
Recipe for disaster?
Is the stock market crashing? Why was there a sell-off and what is a market sell-off? And is this a good time for us self-directed investors to invest more, like, is the stock market on sale?
We all know that the stock market recently tanked and there was a huge sell-off. Was this a pull back or a correction, are we in a bear market.
The difference is a decline of:
Pull back = 5-9%
Correction = 10 -19% (Stock Market Is Currently Here)
Bear market = >20%
✨The recent turbulence was the most severe since the 34% decline that occurred in Q1 2020.
✨ Market corrections happen almost every year. Since the early 1980s, there's been a greater than 5% drawdown in the S&P 500 Index in every year but two (1995 and 2017).
✨ The stock market has historically recovered quickly from corrections. The average time to recovery from a 5%-10% downturn is three months. The average time to recovery from a 10%-20% correction is eight months.
✨80% of corrections since 1974 have not led to a bear market.
✨ There's a 73% probability of a double rate cute (.50%)

Let's discuss and demystify the recent volatility in the stock market, NVDA earnings, Jackson Hole highlights including rate cuts, and the dreaded "R" word (recession). 🔮
"If the Mag 7 is coming down, and the other 493 are participating, that is a recipe for sideways action."
Nvidia surpassed earnings, but saw its stock price decline 6.5% today. There's a supply issue, not a demand issue here. And just like there was a let-down for Swifties when Taylor didn't announce Reputation TV, just like Nvidia didn't meet expectations of the market and there was a let-down. But we're still betting on Taylor Swift, so take that correlation how you will (not advice). 😉
The Broadening: Group Participation in the Class Project
Earnings growth is now happening in the other 493 stocks of the S&P 500, indicating a broadening of the market. Check out our episode: What Is Market Breadth (Ep. 45).

32. Q&A: Answering All YOUR Questions (keep 'em coming)
00:24:03
We're back, we had to take a week off because, if you didn't know, Jess is the sun and Jessie is the moon - we had to eclipse. 🌚🌞
First, a quick market update for April 11, 2024 about CPI and PPI!
Then we get to allllll your questions, yes, even questions from our very early episodes (told ya we'd get to them eventually 😅).
Questions we answer in this episode:
@lukodaian asked - can you please explain Dow [indice] points, S&P 500 points, and how they are calculated? what does it really mean?
@beyza asked a question from our last Episode (31) on CD Ladders - When you say the rates are annual, looking at 5.35% for 3 month period, does that mean i will be getting 5.35% at the end of that period or will it actually be less?
@tinaremlinger asked - I would like to know how I go about gifting stocks or buying stocks for my children.
Jane Smith Carson asked about Portfolio diversification! Should I diversify by sector? How do I add bonds in my brokerage account? Are Bond ETFs a good idea? Also she asked Jess what her favorite Taylor Swift song and album is 🙃
Mags asked - I’ve seen discourse about how BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street, etc. have too much market share! I would love to hear thoughts. And the best ways for young adults to build wealth, should we use AI investors, and is Social Security dead?
We help educate you on how the stock market works, so that you can make informed decisions on what to do with your money. Keep the questions coming! 💙💜

45. What is Market Breadth & Concentration Risk? Why Should YOU Care?
00:30:10
Inflation is at an all-time high and so is the stock market. This is a tale of two markets. How is the S&P 500 making record highs when so many Americans are living paycheck to paycheck?
We're going to break it all down. What's happening in the stock market, what the S&P 500 actually is, what market breadth and concentration risk means and why it all matters to you! We also discuss small-cap, mid-cap, large-cap, and even mega-cap companies in your portfolio, briefly, because the small-cap companies are starting to come up. This one is a little intermediate, but all very valuable info when you are a self-directed investor learning how to manage your portfolios to reach your goals. 💰💰💰
(Go to the 20-minute mark for a great analogy about this stuff if you get lost leading up to that point 😉🔮)

43. Stock Market During Election Years: We're Not Getting Political, But Is The Market?
00:29:39
How Does The Stock Market Perform During an Election Year? We are not getting political in this episode -- however, we are on a fact finding mission to understand if the stock market is. Let your fin-mom and fin-auntie break it down for you. 😉🔮
Does the U.S. Presidential election affect the stock market? Does the political party of the elected leader make a difference? Let's discuss, shallllll we? We're going to look at historical data going back to 1900 under each party and even drill down to the sectors.
Seasonality Happens Every Year, But Past Performance Is Not Indicative of Future Results 👻
There are 4 years in a U.S. Presidential cycle, the 4th year is positive for the stock market historically (S&P 500). Since 1928, the 4th year of an election cycle is up 73% of the time with a median return 9.5% - no matter who the political party is.
Does the political party in charge matter?
Looking at Democrat vs Republican, we go back to the 1900s when the DJIA (Dow Jones Industrial Average) was created and see a very minimal difference whether Dem or Rep is in office. Clearly there’s no dispersion because the stock market relies on growth, but the outlier might be those instances when the political party of the president runs both the house and senate, the data changes a little, but overall, the outcome of the Presidential election does not really affect the stock market. The median annualized return every election year is 7.7% when a Democrat wins and 7.9% when a Republican wins, historically. Such a very small difference - make whatever conclusions from that you'd like. 😘
The Takeaway
Elections don’t really impact the stock market. There’s natural seasonality around the time of year Presidential elections take place, but the election itself and the outcome don’t make much of a difference. Time in the market is still your friend!! Stay consistent with how you invest and don’t be an emotional investor. Look at the overall stock market performance over a large span of time and you’ll see that there are always ups and downs, but when you stay invested for a long time your return inevitably goes up.

53. The Fed Cut Interest Rates: Prepare For Landing 🛬
00:30:56
The Fed aka The Federal Reserve finally cut interest rates. Papa Powell (aka fed chair Jerome Powell) announced this week the federal funds rate is cut by 50 basis points (which means .50%). This might not seem like much to consumers like us, but cutting it by .50% in one meeting is actually a pretty big deal. Normally, everyone would flip out over something like this and wonder if it means we’re in a recession or about to be, but this time, EVERYONE was anticipating it and prepared for it. The stock market is actually at a high today. The S&P 500 rose to a new high today topping the record set July 16th. It’s up 11% since from its low on Aug. 5 when recession panic peaked after the brutal July jobs report. This year, the S&P 500 is up about 19%, despite high interest rates and everything happening in the world this year.
We explore economic indicators, the housing market dynamics, employment trends, and the Fed's dual mandate of balancing maximum employment with price stability. The conversation also touches on the political influences on monetary policy, the definition of inflation, and current market trends, providing listeners with insights into navigating the evolving economic landscape.

21. Investing in AI | Building the Investment Thesis
00:29:16
🐰 Curious about how to invest in AI? Let's fall into the Artificial Intelligence rabbit hole, shall we? And, yes we talk about actual AI stocks as well. Beware the Jabberwocky (aka AI Tools that claim to "beat the stock market" or predict the best stocks to buy).
🤖 AI stocks are beating earnings upwards of 40% (and much much higher). Are analysts not valuating these stocks properly? Perhaps we all need a little lesson on how AI works and the earnings potential across all sectors in terms of these companies that are part of the AI frenzy.
Wondering Which AI Companies To Invest In?
Let's first understand how AI works (follow @the.rachel.woods on TikTok to learn a ton about AI), what's needed to create a large language model, GPUs/TPUs, and who already has alllll the data.
What about the other companies and industries getting a piece of the AI pie? Break it down into B2B and B2C. And make sure you do your research and your homework - cuz you know we ALWAYS do. 😌

55. Replay: How did the Stock Market Perform Under Biden vs. Trump?
00:29:39
[This episode was originally recorded on July 05, 2024, before Biden dropped out of the Presidential Election Race. We examined historical data, facts, and statistics of what happens to the stock market when there is a Republican vs Democrat as President of the U.S.]
During election years, the stock market tends to experience increased volatility due to the uncertainty surrounding the outcome. However, historical data shows that the stock market performance during election years does not significantly differ from other years. The median annualized return for the stock market since the 1900s is 7.7%. The performance of the stock market is more influenced by factors such as economic growth and corporate earnings rather than the political party in office. It is important to stay invested in the market and focus on long-term growth.

34. Investing Jargon, Demystified 🔮✨ The Top 20 Terms You Need to Know - In Order
00:26:24
There's a loooot of jargon in the financial world. And it can seem overwhelming or like it's a language that was intentionally made to keep you in the dark, but Jess has been shining light on all this lingo since the beginning, and we've realized the jargon is actually pretty easy to grasp once it's explained to you in a logical, compounding way.
Compounding Knowledge 🧠✨
Just like your money compounds with interest, your investing knowledge compounds by starting off with the basic terms and building upon them. We'll take you through about 20 terms today (and we'll probably make a cute worksheet for you as well).
It's In The Name!
It's true, most of these jargony terms are self-explanatory and the answer is literally "in the name" for a lot of them.
We start with the basic stock market terms you need to know and build upon them. You gotta know what capital is before you understand market cap, capital appreciation and capital gain, for example. ;)

54. How to Find Investment Sector Opportunities
00:33:56
It's time to give your money a job, but if you can't decide on a company, you can start with a sector.
GICS stands for the Global Industry Classification Standard and they set the classifications for the 11 sectors.
2 Types of Sectors:
Cyclical sectors are sensitive to economic conditions. They do well when the economy is growing but can struggle during recessions. These sectors are more volatile, but high risk can also equal high reward.
Defensive sectors are stable across all economic conditions because they provide essential goods and services that people need regardless of how the economy is doing. They can be considered recession-proof.

46. Fed Update: What is Event Risk? Could it Trigger a Sell-Off?
00:29:40
We recorded this on 08/01/2024, knowing that unemployment numbers will not drop until this podcast airs on 08/02/2024, and that might also change so keep that in mind.
**Employment Report Update from Jess**
Fed's View on Labor Market:Fed Chair Jerome Powell stated that the changes in the labor market are "broadly consistent with a normalization process." However, policymakers are closely watching for signs of deeper issues.
Unemployment Report Highlights:
Unemployment Rate: Jumped to 4.3% in July, the highest in nearly three years.
Hiring Slowdown: Significant reduction in hiring activities.
Concerns: Increased fears of a weakening labor market and potential recession.
Trend: This is the fourth consecutive monthly increase in unemployment, rising from a five-decade low of 3.4% in April 2023.
Cause: The slowdown is driven by weak hiring rather than layoffs.
Following the release of the employment data: U.S. Treasury yields dropped, meaning bond prices rose and we are in a sell off.
Fed Meeting Notes aka The Powell-Point
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell announced on the latest FOMC press conference that there will NOT be any rate cuts. We're shocked, really. Let's go through the data!
It's no secret that most of us Americans are feeling the impact of higher rates to borrow money and inflation. But finally! It's not just us smaller consumers feeling the heat, larger companies are as they reported revenue declines. And if the big companies feel it, they will have to make some changes.
Price Stability + Max Employment & Event Risk
Something feels broken. The Fed has a toolkit to use when something is broken. Which means: rate cuts!
What does it mean for you?
We might see some sell-off in certain sectors. But that is normal rotation. Remember, this is not financial advice, but we have some episodes on What Is Inflation, CD Laddering, Bond ETFs, Are We In a Recession, etc., for you to understand what happens when the Yield Curve is de-inverted and what happens when rates inevitably get cut. 2. Understanding the Stock Market
00:23:20
In Episode 02 of the Market MakeHer Podcast, we learn what the stock market actually is (with shopping analogies 👜) and how the overall performance of the stock market is measured. In true Market MakeHer fashion, Jess explains these elusive concepts to us in more simplified language, and Jessie stops her to ask questions, define jargon, and break things down in even more relatable terms.
And speaking of "fashion" - the theme for today's episode was "hats" (hence the witch hat and Nasdaq bucket hat). We're open to episode theme suggestions, so be sure to send us your ideas for the video version of this podcast.
What we learned in Episode 02: * What the stock market is and how it is similar to those buy/sell/trade clothing stores (it even has open and closing hours: 9:30 am - 4:00 pm EST) * What the 3 major indexes are (also called "indices" pronounced in-dih-sees) and how they help us measure the "health" of the stock market - the value of all the stocks. * Difference between "price weighted" and "market cap weighted" * Difference between micro-cap, small-cap, mid-cap, and large-cap (these things are not necessary to know right now at a beginner level, but are helpful terms to keep in mind for later) * What are "points" when we hear that "x" index went up or down "100 points," for example? * How do consumers influence the performance of the stock market? * How does "fiscal policy" (what the government does) influence stock value? And how things like "the U.S. debt ceiling," for example, influence stock prices. * The consumers have the power - where we spend our hard-earned money matters ;)
Episode 02 - Simplified and Summed Up: The stock market is a "place" where a collection of stocks are bought and sold. A brokerage firm connects you to this place for you to buy and sell your stocks. The stock market is measured collectively through indexes/indices. Consumers influence sales by deciding where they spend their money, which makes the value of stocks go up and down. Stocks are commonly measured on 3 major indices/indexes (Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, Nasdaq - the S&P 500 is the best gauge of how the market is performing because it has the most variety) and this is how we get an idea of how the stock market is performing overall. Learning how to measu

3. What is a Stock (and how does a stock make money)?
00:22:30
In Episode 03 of the Market MakeHer Podcast, Jessie asks Jess: what stocks are, how stocks work, why people buy stocks, and how to understand the value of a stock. Don't forget that you can get more "Episode Equity" on the Ep. 03 page of our website: https://www.marketmakeherpodcast.com/episode/ep-3-what-is-a-stock What We Learned: 1. A stock is a type of investment that gives you a share of ownership in a company. 2. A company's profitability can be measured through earnings per share (EPS) and profit margin. 3. A company reports its earnings quarterly, it provides information about its past quarter performance and future quarter expectations, which can impact the value of its stock. 4. It is good to see increasing EPS and revenue, expanding profit margins, and optimistic forward looking guidance
Upcoming: On the next episodes we will talk about Mutual Funds and 401(k) accounts - subscribe to be alerted when these episodes drop! You can also submit your questions on our website for the next episodes. Keep the conversation going on our social media channels!

4. What Are Mutual Funds and ETFs?
00:26:10
In Episode 4 of the Market MakeHer Podcast, Jess Inskip teaches us what mutual funds and exchange traded funds (ETFs) are and how they work - and whew - we learned a lot! If you couldn’t take notes while you listened, don’t worry - Jess wrote an article to help explain it in the Episode Equity for the Episode 4 page of the site and Jessie took notes, which can be found in the Dividends section of the site.
Here are some things we learned in Episode 04:
The differences between mutual funds and ETFs
Active vs Passive
You can’t just buy the whole S&P 500, but you can buy a mirror of it
Allll the types of funds that are out there (including Target Date Funds - yes, we will do a retirement episode!)
Stocks are securities, but securities are so much more than stock (i.e. Stocks, Bonds, Funds, Money Markets - oh my!)
Portfolios are like an easter egg basket analogy
Mutual Funds are like a group gift analogy (Bonds are “IOUs” - duh)
Mutual Fund ticker symbols always has 5 letters and ends in "X"
Jessie’s light bulb moment about Primary vs Secondary Markets
Fees Fees Fees! (we also need to do an entire episode about taxes)
How Mutual Funds and ETFs could make you money
“The Greeks” and what Beta means - definitely marinating on this one
How often Jessie says "like" - all the time apparently
Bonus Tip: Don't leave your money sitting in a Money Market in your Brokerage Account! You have to take that money and then invest it in stocks, ETFs, Mutual Funds, etc.
There was also a surprise pop-in visit from Darling Lady Darla, which you can enjoy on our YouTube channel.
As always, you can send us any questions you have about Mutual Funds, ETFs, or anything about the Stock Market at www.marketmakeherpodcast.com/contact-us or on any of our social channels. We are keeping them all organized to be answered in the appropriate episode. And PRETTY PLEASE, if you’re learning something from these episodes - share with your friends, leave us a review, subscribe - you know the deal. <3

6. Stock Market Update: Who Is "The Fed?" What's Happening w/Inflation and the Labor Market?
00:15:36
What is the stock market doing today? What's going on with inflation? Learn this and more in our July 2023 "SMU."
The stock market is all around you!
We aren’t just talking about the current state of the stock market - we’re understanding how the things that are currently happening in the U.S. (and the world) affect the “forward-looking” value of stocks.
We’ve been laying down the foundation of what the stock market is, and now, we’re going to talk about what the current state of the stock market looks like, so that we can become savvy investors. Then, we can start getting into “the how” (that is, how to put this all into action for yourself).
Things we discussed in Ep. 06:
July 2023 theme of the market - inflation (surprise)
Who is “the Fed” and why do we care?
Monetary Policy (interest rates, reserves, banks)
How does the Fed’s decisions affect the stock market?
The labor market is back to where it was pre-pandemic, but we’re seeing different age ranges in the labor market (i.e. 50+ workers left during the pandemic). What will this mean?
This is what it sounds like, when the Hawk cries.
We’re probably going to need more automation and/or immigration to keep up with the labor needs.
Why does any of this matter and what does it have to do with stocks?
Restrictive policy (raising interest rates) makes the stock market go on sale 😉
Bull Market vs Bear Market (hint: + or - 20%)
How will the stock market change in the next 10 - 20 years?
Labor market report is coming!
Earnings season is coming!
What should we name these updates?
Upcoming episodes: Jess will teach us how to have an investment thesis, so that we can make wise decisions while we pay attention to what’s happening in the world, and ultimately, the stock market. We have another educational episode coming up, then we’ll learn how to pick a brokerage firm/company, and theeennnn we’ll be on our way to building our own portfolios. They discuss the concept of market broadening, highlighting the need for growth across various sectors rather than relying solely on major tech companies. The conversation also covers key economic indicators such as PCE, inflation, jobless claims, and retail sales, explaining their significance in understanding market dynamics. Finally, they address the Federal Reserve's efforts to achieve a soft landing for the economy and emphasize the importance of staying informed as market conditions evolve.

62. Demystifying Retirement Accounts: Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, Rollover IRA and SEP IRA
00:40:19
Today we’re learning allllll about IRAs (individual retirement arrangements/accounts) including Roth IRAs, Traditional IRAs, Rollover IRAs and SEP IRAs. You’ll understand contribution limits, tax implications, and eligibility requirements for each account. As always, we aim to empower you with all the knowledge you need to make informed decisions for future you. This is not advice.
✨Roth IRAs are best for you if you are in a lower income tax bracket and do not need a tax break, because you are taxed upfront, not later.
✨Traditional IRAs are best for you if you do not qualify for a Roth, or if you need a tax break… if you qualify for the deduction. The benefits are before tax dollars, offering you a tax break if you are eligible bc you are in a higher tax bracket.
✨Rollover IRAs you rollover an employer sponsored plan, like a 401k in the plan you want to keep them separate so you can roll it back into a new 401k plan at a new employer.
✨SEP IRAs are best for small business owners who do not want the complexities of 401ks. There are higher contribution limits, and all contributions are made by the employer.
Contribution Limits You have to have taxable compensation and your modified AGI. Beginning in 2024, the IRA contribution limit increased to $7,000 ($8,000 for individuals age 50 or older) from $6,500 ($7,500 for individuals age 50 or older). This stayed the same for 2025.

63. Elephant in the Stock Market: Trump Tariffs, Tax Cuts, & Immigration Policy Implications
00:35:57
Now that the U.S. election results are in, we’re discussing the “elephant in the room” - that is, the implications of potential Trump administration policies on the stock market. We’re focusing on tariffs, immigration, tax cuts, deregulation, and the Fed’s role. How will these factors influence market dynamics, inflation, and economic growth? What does it all mean for self-directed investors?
We’ll also define what all these terms mean to help you stay aware of false claims you see on social media (so many videos about tariffs that are getting it wrong). And we’ll discuss the risks of stagflation (new vocab term!) and the historical resilience of the S&P 500. As we all know by now, time in the market is your best strategy and we always encourage our listeners to stay informed and invested for long-term success.
Talk to a financial advisor or at least do a little more investigating before making any rash decisions with your portfolio. We’re always here to educate** and make you fin-fluent, not fin-fluenced.
<3 It's also important for us to say that we are very sympathetic to how these policies can potentially impact human beings and the environment. Our goal in this discussion is to help you be an informed investor so that you can best take care of future you and make your own educated decisions on what you want to do with your money. <3

65. Bond Vigilantes Are So Back
00:30:34
What is a bond vigilante? The Batman of the bond market? Kinda. In the last episode, we learned the bond market is the most powerful and influential market. Bond vigilantes are big-time bond investors who can use the power of selling bonds to influence the market and protest against fiscal and monetary policy (basically, they try to put restraints on the government from over-spending and over-borrowing, especially when inflation is high).
What do bond vigilantes do? When bond vigilantes sell significant amounts of their bonds, they drive bond prices down and yields up, making it more expensive for debt issuers (companies or governments) to borrow money. They do this to get someone’s attention when they don’t agree with fiscal or monetary policy.
Pre-Requisites (these episodes are other pieces of the puzzle you need to know):
* A treasury is a “fixed-income product” commonly known as bonds. * Companies can issue debt in the form of bonds. * Governments also issue debt from the Treasury, which funds our large country deficit (or debt, kinda like credit card debt). And that’s how the government can get more money for fiscal policy. * Bonds and Yields (interest) move opposite of each other. * Rising bond yields = higher borrowing costs = higher mortgage rates, credit card rates, and borrowin

66. Insider Trading: Lessons from Martha (Stewart)
00:31:45
What is insider trading and what can we learn from the highly-politicized Martha Stewart case regarding illegal insider trading? Find out on this episode of Market MakeHer. 😉
Illegal Insider Trading vs Legal Insider Trading
Legal Insider Trading is when company insiders (e.g., executives, employees or majority shareholders) trade their company's stock while following rules and regulations. They must report their trades to the Securities and Exchange Commission (you can search the EDGAR database) to ensure transparency and fairness (we talk about conspiracy theories regarding how people like Jeff Bezos sell off a lot of their shares, but it’s totally legal because they have to report it and it’s all public information that anyone can look up).
Illegal Insider Trading is when someone trades based on non-public, material information that gives them an unfair advantage. This includes tips from employees, confidential sources, or any form of access to proprietary information not available to the public. Like a secret that the public doesn’t know yet that would potentially affect stock prices. Illegal insider trading undermines market fairness and investor trust. This is why finance is so regulated.
👑 Icon and Legend Martha Stewart
Martha was convicted of obstruction of justice, not insider trading itself. Her case serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of transparency and honesty. She did her prison time, made the most of it, and completely rebuilt her brand after her reputation was tarnished. We talk about how she was made as an example and why it’s bad to lie. 😅

68. Remix: What Is the PCE Index & Why Does It Matter to Us?
00:19:28
*This content was taken from Episode 35, which was originally recorded in May 2024, but has been edited to mainly focus on the important terms PCE, PPI & CPI to help put into context the new data we are seeing now in December 2024 and how it affects us as consumers, workers, and investors.*
What Is PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures)? The PCE price index is considered The Fed’s preferred index. It’s kinda like how we use the S&P 500 indice to measure the stock market, but it’s a price index that measures specific goods and services and it’s regionalized. Basically, it's a guage on what Americans are spending and helps track inflation. It’s currently +2.8% YOY (October 2024), which is up from +2.7% in September 2024 - not what we want to see, we’d like to see it go down.
What is the difference between the CPI and the PCE Index? The CPI measures the change in the out-of-pocket expenditures of all urban households and PCE measures the change in goods and services consumed by all households, and nonprofit institutions serving households.

73. Remix: Understanding Your Risk Tolerance with the Risk Pyramid
00:29:02
*previously recorded on 03/15/24, but still relevant* Last week we talked about creating quarterly financial goals with a fun activity, and we thought it would be a good time to also revisit your risk tolerance with this past episode.
At the time of recording, The Fed still didn’t cut interest rates, but projected they would 3 times, so it was a great time to lock in the higher rates that we saw in fixed income securities (bonds, etc) in the months that followed until rates were finally cut several times the last half of 2024. Did you notice your HYSA interest rate has come down since then? We did prepare you for that, so if you’re not able to stay updated on everything going on in the markets and with The Federal Reserve, you might want to subscribe to the podcast. 😉 ——————————————
• What's your investment risk tolerance? (check out the risk pyramid below) • How are you diversifying your investments in your portfolio? • Are the interest rates on our high yield savings account coming down? •What should we do with our cash to make sure it's out-pacing inflation?
Figure Out Your Risk Tolerance
There are lots of quizzes you can do at your brokerage firm or even government sites that help you figure out your risk tolerance for your personal situation.
The higher the risk the higher the reward, BUT, remember that also means there's a higher risk to lose your money. Diversifying is key. 😉
Risk Pyramid
High Risk - On Top
Medium Risk - Middle
Low Risk - On the Bottom
------------------------------
High Risk Investments = Alternative Assets (Options, Futures, and Crypto is the most risky thing you can do with your money)
Medium Risk Investments = Fixed Income (government debt, corporate debt, real estate, blue chip stocks, growth stocks, etc.)
Low Risk Investments = Cash, Cash Equivalents (T-Notes, HYSA, Bonds, Money Markets, etc.) and you can get ETFs or Mutual Funds that have bonds and low-risk securities in them.
Figure out your risk tolerance and let’s see how that might change any of your Q2 goals when we do our Quarterly Financial Check-In! (Check out episode 72 to do your Q1 Financial Planning).

74. Replay: Demystifying Stock Order Types in Trading
00:35:52
This episode was first released on June 24, 2024. We’re replaying it for you for a reason! Think of it as a review of some of last year’s material before we get into all the investing topics we’re going to cover this year. 👩🏼🏫👩🏻🏫 We share our screen and actually show you how to place different order types at a brokerage firm - you can watch on Spotify or YouTube!
There are so many different ways to buy and sell securities in your brokerage account. What does Bid and Ask mean? What is Stop and Limit Order? What are market orders? How many different Order Types are there and what is the difference? This is your ‘set it and forget it” overview of order types for trading securities through your brokerage firm.
Remember These Things: Take taxable events into account (capital gains, losses, selling before holding for 1 year, etc.). Don’t try to time the market. This is education, not advice. 😉
Limit Order vs Market Order:
Limit Order guarantees price not execution. Market Order guarantees execution.
We’ve already gone over Bid and Ask prices and how those market mechanics work in Episode 16 (on Dark Pools, PFOF, Market Makers). You might also like Episode 10 (how to read a stock quote) and Episode 14 (how to analyze a stock for beginners). 😉✨

76. Replay: AI Power Grid Pressure: The Price/Energy Ratio
00:28:20
We are revisiting Episode 42, originally aired July 26, 2024, where we look at how AI Power Grid Pressure can also be a headwind to consider in your long-term AI investing strategy. Start with our AI Portfolio and Investment Thesis discussed in Episode 21 to understand the full AI investing picture. According to our very own Jess Inskip, "The real ‘P/E Risk’ isn't overhyped price to earnings. The risk is price to energy." (Get it? That's a P/E Ratio joke 👻) Most of us are invested in AI, whether we know it or not because the S&P 500 is mainly technology.
How Much Electricity Does Generative AI Use? Nvidia (NVDA) valuations are justified as the hyperscalers are top customers and we are seeing real earnings at incredible profit margins. The earnings potential makes sense. However, the energy consumption and subsequent pressure represent the real risk. Each Blackwell AI GPU sold by Nvidia consumes up to 1200 watts of power, so 3.5mn of them would consume 1.8GW of power in the US alone. (Consensus estimates 3.5b in GPU sales by 2027).
Validate Your Investment Thesis (What you eat, eats.) Look at the root of the problem with all of this AI grid pressure and see where the solutions might be (as in which companies are coming up with solutions for this bigger issue). "Sustainable AI" is still in it's infancy, but maybe there are some companies out there that are using AI for good and to help come up with solutions to some of these issues? Do your homework. 😉
AI Opportunities (but do your homework) The grid pressure is a longer-term risk, it does not mean the AI story has peaked yet: Opportunities still exist benefiting NVDA, AVGO, MRVL, AMD, and MU.

77. Margin Trading & Investing Explained
00:43:49
This is an advanced episode, but also a very important episode to help you understand market mechanics and put another piece together in the stock market puzzle we are conquering - with education! We gave you a few replay episodes before this one to help you prepare for a heavy dose of knowledge, so buckle up, because we’re about to math real hard.
What is Margin Trading or Investing?
When you buy a stock on margin, you create the ability to borrow against those stocks. You are required to own a certain percentage of those stocks. Any equity or surplus owned in excess of those percentage requirements, you can create a loan and buy more stocks. A great analogy is a home equity line of credit, or HELOC. But a bit more complicated, because stocks are priced every milisecond, which means requirements change every day, and there are requirements on what you buy with that loan.
Risk Tolerance: High
Margin is extremely risky, it provides leverage which means you can make more than you deposit, but you can also lose more. It magnifies gains and losses. You can easily lose a lot of money with this type of investing, so you really gotta know what you’re getting yourself into with this type of account!
Shorting Stocks Is Extremely Risky
We’ll also discuss the trends on social media around shorting Meta stocks and others and how easily you can lose money quickly when attempting those kinds of trades.

80. What A Recession Is and How the Business Cycle Informs Us
00:29:25
🚨 Recession Watch: What’s Happening in the Markets? 🚨
Major banks are raising red flags about a potential recession, pointing to uncertainty around trade, tariffs, and inflation. If there’s one thing the market hates, it’s uncertainty—it fuels volatility.
As of March 13, 2025, the S&P 500 has officially entered correction territory, meaning it has dropped 10% from its recent highs. Corrections like this are a normal part of market cycles.
🔍 Looking Back: This episode was recorded on September 6, 2024. Back then, the S&P 500 was at the same levels we saw in late August/early September, driven by recession fears and a spike in unemployment—concerns that led the Fed to cut rates by 0.50% for the first time.
📅 Looking Ahead: Fast forward to today, and guess what? The next Federal Reserve rate decision is coming up on March 19, 2025, at 2 PM ET.
So let’s stay calm, collected, and calculated as we break down: ✅ What a recession is ✅ How it’s officially declared ✅ How it fits into today’s market landscape
📉 Sector FYI: Consumer discretionary stocks are taking the hardest hit this year, down 13.4% year-to-date, with Tesla (TSLA) leading the decline as the sector’s biggest component.

81. Corrections, Bear Markets & the Sentiment Disconnect: Are We Headed for a Lost Decade?
00:33:32
In this episode, we’re diving into one of the most important (and misunderstood) topics in the stock market: what happens when things start to go south. We break down corrections, bear markets, and recessions—and how to tell the difference between them—while also exploring whether we could be on the verge of another "lost decade" for investors.
We also take a closer look at the current disconnect between how people feel about the economy (sentiment) and what the numbers are actually showing. From cautious consumers and rising savings rates to record-high household debt and steady earnings growth, the story is more nuanced than headlines suggest.
If you're feeling uncertain about where the market is headed or what it all means for your portfolio, we’ve got you. We walk through smart investing strategies, explain the importance of asset allocation (especially as you approach retirement), and share how to stay focused when the noise gets loud.

82. Wait…That’s What Caused Inflation? The Fed Pt. 1
00:35:26
If you’ve been hearing about inflation but aren’t totally sure what it means—or why everything suddenly got more expensive after the pandemic—this episode is for you.
We break down what inflation actually is and explain the real reasons prices went up: broken supply chains, government stimulus checks, rising wages, and energy shocks. It wasn’t just one thing—it was everything, all at once.
But here’s why this matters now: Fed Chair Jerome Powell is bringing back the word “transitory” to describe inflation again—this time because of tariffs. We explain what that word means, why it caused so much confusion the first time, and why using it again could be a big deal.
This is the first episode in our Fed Deep Dive series—where we connect the dots between the past, present, and what the Fed might do next.

83. How Tariffs Actually Impact the Markets
00:37:30
You voted, we delivered — and barely slept. The market is TARIFF-IED! 🙃
In this episode, we interrupt our regularly scheduled Fed deep dive to break down the 2025 Trump tariffs shock and what it means for your portfolio. It's a tug-of-trade-war and self-directed investors shouldn't try to time the markets, but should be informed, prepared, and diversified.
You’ll learn what tariffs are, how these sweeping new tariffs are fueling inflation and shaking up the job market while putting the Fed in an impossible bind. We’ll walk you through the ripple effects on the U.S. dollar, Treasury yields, and how investors are rethinking their strategy in real time. Plus, we dig into what history teaches us about past trade wars — from the Smoot-Hawley Depression era to the 2018 showdown with China — and how those lessons apply now. History is echoing...

84. Remix: When Yields Speak Louder Than Headlines
00:32:49
Lately, the market’s been moving over 1,000 points a day. We call this volatility fueled by uncertainty. We’ve been talking about falling yields, rising rates, and now tariffs are back in the headlines… but what if the real story is in the credit market?
In this episode, we’re replaying one of our favorite breakdowns: bond vigilantes — who they are, how they got their name, and the role they’ve played in shaping market history. And with everything happening right now, it’s more relevant than ever.
We walk through what’s going on with the 10-year Treasury yield, why a major hedge fund’s exit triggered a wave of selling, and how a “buyer’s strike” in the bond market could turn into something even bigger. Jess shares why she thinks this yield surge might be what actually caught Trump’s attention, and what that means for the rally that followed.
We also tie in the basis trade and why volatility in the bond market can be a warning sign for the economy.
This episode brings historical context to today’s chaos — because once you understand the credit market, you start to see how it quietly drives everything else.

40. Preparing for Rate Cuts: What are Bond Funds?
00:28:23
What Is The Bond Market and What Are Bond ETFs?
CPI is “cooling off” which means inflation is trending closer to the Fed’s target, which means a rate cut MAY be in our future! What does that mean? Well if the Fed, you know, good ol "Papa Powell" who we keep talking about, well if they actually go through with cutting rates this is what happens. Interest rates for things like home loans get lower, but that means those high yield savings account rates also get lower. So where do you stash your cash and still get those great returns? Bonds. More specifically, we're looking at Bond ETFs.
We've talked about different types of low risk investing on Ep. 31 about Brokerage CDs but we want y'all to know about all the ways you can make your money make money!

18. Understand The Yield Curve, Treasury Bonds, and Stock Market Impacts
00:26:37
Today we're talking bonds, Treasury Bonds, that is. 🍸 Along with yields, impacts on the market, and how the US always pays its debts 🦁😏
🤨 What exactly is the yield curve and what does an inverted yield curve mean?
We're going to learn how to use this as a scrying tool to predict the future in terms of interest rate changes and economic activity. Let's demystify the fixed-income security market (did you know there is not just a stock market, but also a bond market?) and learn about the US department of the treasury and how they issue debt.
🔮Yield Curve Crystal Ball 🔮
Normal Yield Curve = great, economy expected to grow over time
Steepening Yield Curve = might mean inflation is high, short-run good for stocks, but see what the Fed does
Inverted Yield Curve = Not always, but can indicate a recession
*See GDP and Economic Data for the scrying results*
💰 Should We Buy US Treasury Bonds, Notes or Bills Now?
FYI: Bonds = Long-term; Notes = Medium amount of time; Bills = Short-term
Having a portion of your portfolio that is risk-free (i.e. bonds) helps to have you a more diversified portfolio.
As of Nov. 9, 2023:

💸 How do you buy US Treasurys?
Go to your screener tool (we taught you about screeners in Ep. 08) and select "category: fixed income or treasurys" and you buy them in an ETF.
🧠 FYI, treasurys is the plural when we're talking about US treasury securities to differentiate from "treasuries" as in an institution like the Treasury Department 🧠
🧐 Who is "The Treasury" and What Do They Do?
They are the finance department of the US government. They issue the debt.
⚡️ What does this have to do with the stock market rally?
The treasury announced the issuance of debt funding, and it was a slower pace of supply than the last quarter. And in the last quarter it was a ridiculous amount. This gave cla

What's your investment risk tolerance? (check out the risk pyramid below)
How are you diversifying your investments in your portfolio? Are the interest rates on our high yield savings account coming down?
What should we do with our cash to make sure it's out-pacing inflation?
------------------------------
The Fed Balancing Act
Peak of inflation was 9.1% and now we're at 3.2% inflation rate. The Fed's target is always 2% YOY (year over year). It's good to understand how The Fed can change the stock market and the bond market when they raise or lower inflation, as well as how that changes your interest rates.
Think About Your Strategy
What are your plans for your money? How long are you going to keep excess cash or savings in a HYSA or different type of account? What's your plan for having your money out-pace inflation? This is what investing is alllll about!

24. Pay Yourself First (Saving, Budgeting, Investing)
00:31:09
Do I add money to my emergency account before maxing out my IRA?
When do I put my funds into a taxable account?
What makes the most sense for ME?
In this episode, we cover the order of events of how to pay yourself -- and some of the nuances you may want to consider as you enter various life stages. This is not a one size fits all formula. We'll help you think through that!
We do discuss the importance of budgeting and what happens when you have excess income: paying yourself. We cover topics like saving for a rainy day, maxing out company benefits, paying down credit card debt, and high-interest rate loans. We also explore the benefits of health savings accounts (HSAs) and the importance of maxing out IRAs and 401(k)s. Additionally, we discuss the value of saving for children's future financial needs. Financial independence is a personal journey that requires regular evaluation and adjustment. We talk about the importance of understanding the differences between retirement accounts and taxable accounts, and the flexibility and freedom that comes with taxable accounts.
Takeaways:
Save for a rainy day by building an emergency fund.
Maximize your company benefits, such as 401(k) matching.

30. FOMC Meeting, Interest Rate Cuts & Inflation (aka Jess Watched The Fed Press Conference So You Don't Have To)
00:35:20
The FOMC (aka "The Fed" aka The Federal Reserve) had a press conference on March 20, 2024 where they talked about federal reserve rates remaining unchanged, but there's 3 projected interest rate cuts by end of year.
What does this mean for our High Yield Savings Accounts interest rates, mortgages, credit cards, loans, and the economy?
What's going on with unemployment and inflation?
What are balance sheets and what is this balancing act that The Fed is responsible for?
Is good news good news? Or is good news bad news? Or is bad news good news? (i.e. is a spike in unemployment good news? this and other thoughtful words from Jess ✨)
🎧 In the last episode, we talked about the balancing act the FOMC has to do between maximum employment and price stability. Basically, making sure prices are stable (interest rates on housing
🔮 We first mentioned The Fed back in Episode 6 when we discussed who they are, what they do, and why do we care. But we're still giving you a refresher today. And we've definitely mentioned them a few more times since then along with the things referenced in these episodes:

51. What is the Business Cycle? Why Does it Matter NOW?
00:35:27
We are revisiting the business cycle and how it relates to the menstrual cycle, much like we did in Episode 13 on Recessions, but we compare the phases in each cycle, side-by-side this time and break it down further.
What Is The Business Cycle?
The Business Cycle is Periods of economic expansion and contraction based on the 3-Ds we discussed last time: depth (how bad is it?), diffusion (how widespread?), and duration (how long?) of a broad range of economic indicators.
The periods of expansion and contraction begin and end with what is called “turning points” as defined by the NBER (National Bureau of Economic Research). The turning points become peaks and troughs. Peaks are when the economy is slowing down. Trough is when it picks back up.
Why Does It Matter?
Monitoring economic data, such as GDP and unemployment, is crucial for assessing the health of the economy and making informed investment decisions. The stock market is not the economy, but it is closely related to the business cycle and the health of the consumer. Understanding the business cycle can help investors anticipate market trends and adjust their investment strategies accordingly.
Hard Landing vs Soft Landing vs No Landing
Soft landing is a slowdown in economic growth with a controlled reduction in inflation (think of a pilot making a slow controlled descent under the cloud cover to safely land a plane) and it’s usually followed by a period of growth.
Hard landing occurs when the economy contracts sharply due to the central bank's efforts to control inflation (raising interest rates too high for too long).
No-landing occurs when the economy continues to grow despite a series of contractions in monetary policies.
"The business cycle, it's like the menstrual cycle, more than just a period."

37. Finding AI Stock Investing Ideas with Jacey Saige
00:33:26
This week we are joined by Jacey Saige, a Gen Z financial literacy advocate who wants to discuss how to find AI opportunities and stock market impacts. Jacey is filling in for our beloved Jessie DeNuit - do not fret she will be back next week!
AI is an important narrative to sustain this bull market. The S&P 500 is about 30% driven by technology. 5% is NVDA. Which means the AI narrative matters because of how we define the market. NVDA is about duration and demand pull for AI. NVDA reports after the hyperscalers: (GOOGL, META, AMZN, MSFT).
There is a new emerging AI headwind: Grid pressure. AI is using a lot of power, every new iteration of NVDA becomes more efficient, the issue arises as demand is growing at an astronomical rate. Grid pressure is a byproduct of compute growth. The opportunity: power providers that canbring to market faster, or alternative, like nuclear power, quickly and at better margins.
Meet Jacey Saige!
Jacey got her first taste of entrepreneurship at 16yrs old, she amassed 30k followers on Instagram and TikTok through sharing her art. Transitioning seamlessly from showcasing her creativity to managing social media, she honed her skills as a freelance manager and created her first business. Now, as she delves into the world of finance, Jacey's journey has taken an exciting new turn.
Pursuing a degree in finance, Jacey shares her insights and discoveries onTikTok @jacey_saige, demystifying investing and empowering her audience to take control of their financial futures. She brings a fresh perspective to the often intimidating world of finance, making it accessible to all.

@maljones asked a question from What Are Preferred Stocks (Ep. 07): Are preferred stocks also called options? Are they the same thing or different concepts?
Jane Smith Carson asked: Other 'educators' talk crap about picking stocks, your advice makes me feel more confident to diversify my own portfolio. ETF. 27. Q&A Quickie: Investing at 40, Social Security and Money Mindset
00:07:57
We have a Market MakeHer short and sweet Q&A for you today regarding investing a little bit later.
Question from listener @spacey on TikTok: Should I be worried if I haven't started investing yet and I'm approaching 40?
Short Answer: No, but get started ASAP! Like we've said in previous episodes, time in the market is your best strategy. Cut down expenses and invest as much as you can (within reason).
Social Security
If you have been working, then you have social security. There's a government social security tool that can help you figure out how much you might be getting in those benefits.
Other Investments
If you have a home, that's an investment that can help you out later, or you might have other assets.
Money Mindset
We'll have an episode on this. Everyone has a different kind of relationship with money. Stay logical with your money instead of emotional. Check out Episode 25: Pay Yourself First for more budgeting tips.
