29 May 2020Graeme Schlachter's Marathon Swim Story00:33:46

Send us a text

In my conversation with Graeme Schlachter, we talk about swimming the English Channel to sort out back issues, working out when and how you want, being outcome driven and so much more!

In his own words:
12 years ago was the start of my incredible journey that was to change my life and me as a person. It all started with, at the time, I thought was a very silly idea to help sort out a back issue. Swim the English Channel. 11 hrs 45 minutes

Organiser and participant in Extreme 5 challenge involving
Cycle Lands End to John O’Groats (length of Britain)
 Run a marathon
 Kayak Across Scotland
5 rounds of Golf in a day
 Raise £100 000 for charity

For Some reason, Swimming eventually found me again and since then the following have been done
Lake Zurich 26.4km
Lago d’Orta, 28km
SCAR – 41 miles over 4 days
Jubilee River 3 times solo and 1 time as a relay
Champion of Champions in Dover
Thames marathon 14km 2 time solo swim
Long reach Swim 8.6 km
Swim the island in Italy. 6 km, 3km, 1,5km
Multiple 3 and 5km swims
10km charity event for the last four years
2Swim4Life as a team (24Miles in 24 hours)
Guildford 12 (12 Miles in 12 hours – 1 mile per her every hour on the hour)
Humdinger 6 hour swim
Loch Lomond 21 mile Overnight swim.
Loch Lomond 24 mile Relay swim

As you can probably tell from the above, Ultra distance is something I tend to gravitate towards but never stop challenging myself with shorter swims in Pools and galas and colder swims during the winter. I just love the idea of swimming without wetsuits and tend to try and do it all year round.
My 12 year journey has been amazing but my passion lies in helping others realise their dreams and goals no matter how big or small they are. Not only has sport changed my life but it has taken me to some wonderful places around the globe and brought me into contact with some amazing people
So why not start your journey.

In 2019 I released my book (Let’s do Something different – An open water swim journey). Available on Amazon.

Public speaker on Mind matters for endurance events.

Send us a text

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories with Martha Wood we talk about reacquainting yourself with the water after 15 years, life preparing you for marathons, training your kayaker, and so much more!

This is how Martha described herself on her 20 bridges application: Martha Wood grew up in New Hampshire immersed in a life as a competitive swimmer.  She swam on the swim team and played water polo in college, and swam on masters teams on and off for 15 years before taking a 15 year break from swimming.  After returning to the water 6 years ago, Martha started swimming in open water by her home in Manchester, Massachusetts.  After a health crisis in 2014, she undertook marathon and ice swimming as a way to return to health.  Over the years she has come to recognize marathon swimming as a means of finding inner strength and joy, and comraderie with other swimmers.  In the summer of 2019 she was the first place female at the 15.5 mile St. Vincent’s Swim Across the Long Island Sound.  2018 she placed second in the 25km Border Buster at the Kingdom Swim.  She also competed at the 2018 World Winter Swimming Championships in Estonia,  winning 4 gold, one silver and one bronze medal, and plans to compete in ice swimming competitions Winter 2019-2020.  She will to continue to challenge herself by swimming all four stages of SCAR in April.  Inspired by the joy of swimming and fellow swimmers she has met along the way, Martha looks forward to swimming 20 Bridges.

21 May 2020John Gale's Marathon Swim Story00:27:38

Send us a text

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories, John Gale talks about being a late onset swimmer, enjoying cold water, swimming in Ireland, and so much more!

In his own words: I describe myself as an adult-onset swimmer as I started swimming in my late 40s after a knee injury due to a fall sidelined my distance running career. After my doctor advised me to take up another sport or risk an early knee replacement, I slowly found my way to swimming. Over time, I joined a local masters group and discovered open water and cold water swimming. As I moved to longer events, I became interested in marathon swimming. I am fairly early in my marathon swimming journey and have done Boston Light, Swim the Suck, and the 10 mile event during the Kingdom Swim. I began training for the English Channel. My scheduled swim last September never took place due to the movement of Hurricane Umberto through the British Isles. Like many, my swim plans are in flux due to the world-wide impact of COVID-19. One of the greatest things about marathon swimming is the community that it provides. In terms of my non-swimming life, my wife and I live in Portland, Maine and we have a 31 year old son. I am a Senior Research Associate at the Maine Rural Health Research Center at the University of Southern Maine. I focus on a range of policy issues related to rural health care including rural hospitals and clinics, emergency medical services, as well as mental health and substance use treatment services.

Send us a text

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories, I talked with Christopher Graefe about returning to swimming after a 20 year hiatus, swimming success, why it's a good idea to stop sometimes, and our love of the open water community.

In his own words: Christopher Graefe is an open water swimmer residing in Boston, Massachusetts. A childhood age group and collegiate varsity swimmer, Christopher had been swimming most of his life before taking a sizable hiatus up until the age of 40, when he discovered open water. Building off a few shorter Caribbean events, Christopher quickly fell in love with the sport and has participated in events and solos all around the US since 2015. As with many swimmers in the open water community, Christopher loves the friends he’s made through the sport, and the support so many of us give one another through our unique goals and pursuits. He looks forward to brighter days ahead when we’re all back in the water and chasing down those dreams… or just LOVING being able to swim…. once again.

16 Apr 2020Mark Spratt's Marathon Swim Story00:28:09

Send us a text

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories with Mark Spratt, we talk about Mark's huge resume of swims, racing instead of training, when you swear that you'll never do another marathon swim and then you realize that you've done 43! Handling that point that you want to quit, and so much more!

In his own word: Swimming has been a part of Mark Spratt’s life ever since he taught himself to swim at age four. For most of his swimming career Mark was a pool swimmer focusing on sprints and middle-distance stroke events. Mark has been competing in open water swims since 1991, initially focused on shorter races such as the La Jolla Rough Water Swim. Over the last 8 years Mark has added longer races to his calendar. In 2013 Mark swam his first channel, the 17.5 mile Ederle Swim, between New York City and New Jersey. When Mark landed on the Sandy Hook Beach, he figured the Ederle would be his last marathon swim but that was not to be. 43 marathon swims later he keeps signing up for the insane swims. Mark have completed two legs of the Marathon Swimming Triple Crown (Manhattan Island and the Catalina Channel) and scheduled to attempt the English Channel in 2020.

Away from the water, this 64-year-old works as the Controller for Indiana Correction Industries, a division of the Indiana Department of Correction. Mark also loves reading, buying shoes, and eating hamburgers.

Cox is best known for her swim across the Bering Strait on 7 August 1987. The swim opened the border between the US and Soviet Union. Her accomplishment was hailed by both US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev at the signing of the INF Missile Treaty at the White House. 09 Jun 2020Courtney Moates Paulk's Marathon Swim Story00:32:24

Send us a text

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories, I chat with Courtney Moates Paulk. We talk about feeling like a poser at marathon swim events, no such thing as a DNF, enjoying the journey, and so much more!

In her own words: Courtney Paulk is an ultra-distance open water marathon swimmer from Richmond, Virginia. She is the first (and only) person to have completed the Triple Crown of Open Water swimming 3 times and also the first to have completed two of the Triple Crown swims as “doubles.” To say she loves the Triple Crown swims would be an understatement.

Courtney has swum around Manhattan 4 times, across the Catalina Channel 4 times and across the English Channel 3 times. In her quest to complete each of the Triple Crown swims as doubles, in 2017 Courtney completed the 57 mile 40 Bridges swim (by circumnavigating Manhattan twice) in 20 hours 15 minutes and 55 seconds. Ten weeks later, Courtney swam from the mainland of California to Catalina and back in 33 hours and 13 minutes.

In addition to her Triple Crown Swims, Courtney was the 7th person to swim across Cape Cod Bay. She also has completed several Boston Light and SCAR swims, participated in numerous Cork Distance Weeks, the Ederle swim, the Potomac River Swim for the Environment and 15 Great Chesapeake Bay swims.

Courtney has raised over $50,000 in connection with her swims for various charities.

Outside of the water, Courtney is the president of her law firm – Hirschler – an 85 lawyer firm headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. Her practice focuses primarily on representing clients in the construction industry.

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories, I chat with Cindy Werhane about finding yourself in your swims, falling apart after pushing through hard times, tough responsibilities during trying times, and so much more!

In her own words: Cindy identifies as an Oregon swimmer despite growing up in the Midwest. She swims to explore, both the physical world and her internal selves. She enjoys leading and mentoring, with the goal that the next generation of swimmers far surpasses anything she's accomplished.

19 May 2020Elizabeth Almond's Marathon Swim Story00:24:53

Send us a text

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories, I speak with Elizabeth Almond about denial, punching the water, accidentally swimming the Triple Crown in 84 days, and so much more!

In her own words: My name is Elizabeth Almond and I live in Atlanta, GA. I have lived other places, but native Atlantan which is quite rare these days. I graduated Emory University in 1996. I did not swim in college, but I swam Dynamo Swim Club and Swim Atlanta growing up. After college, I became a dive instructor in Mexico(Club Med), Hawaii(Beach Activities Unit Hyatt), and Grand Cayman(Red Sail Sports). While in Grand Cayman, I was working a private charter for Delta Air Lines. I told them I was coming home and didn’t know what I was going to do. They offered me a job and I worked as a flight attendant for the next 8 years in Portland, Oregon, NYC, and Atlanta. They offered a retirement in 2006, so I took it and went to pharmacy school to get my Pharm D(Doctor of Pharmacy). After Pharmacy School, I needed a new challenge and a hobby. One day I picked up competitor magazine and saw an Iron Girl Sprint triathlon at the lake in 2012 and I said I am going to do that this weekend. I had not swam competitively since 8th grade, I didn’t have a bike, and was definitely not in run shape, but I signed up and picked up a rental bike on the way to check in. I didn’t do well, but I was 2nd overall female out of the water. I decided to get in shape and start racing triathlons as I didn’t know what kind of swims were available for adult swimmers. I am not an early birdie, so master’s was not an option. I went on to complete several 70.3 and a couple full Ironmans before my doctor said you can’t stand on your feet 12 hours a day and continue to race like this. In the middle of the Ironman’s, I found Swim Around Key West. My husband said you can not swim 12.5 mile by yourself. He wanted his friend Justin to do the swim as a relay with me. I agreed and Justin and I took 3rd place in 2013. I was hooked on marathon swimmming. Justin never wanted to swim again . I came home and started looking for swims. I found this thing called Manhattan Island Marathon Swim. I was kind of grossed out, but intrigued at the same time. I knew I was not ready for 28 miles, so I kept searching and found Swim Around Charleston the same summer 2013. After the thrill of Iron Man wore off, I decided to pursue the Tampa Bay Marathon Swim as I had heard of it. Tampa Bay cancelled that year. However, while training I met a guy at Lifetime that trained in the outdoor pool all winter. I was intrigued and said I bet I can do that. We started to become friendly as i was the only other person swimming out there. That is when he told me about SCAR and winter swimming. I made sure to mark my calender for SCAR in 2017. Signed up, met a bunch of people, learned about a lot of events, and the rest is history. I left a very stressful job that had never allowed me to train properly in 2017. I took 2018 off to rest and recover from burnout. In 2019, I swam 20 bridges, Catalina, and English Channel in 84 days.

11 Jun 2020Michelle Macy's Marathon Swim Story00:39:03

Send us a text

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories, I chat with Michelle Macy about being your authentic self, not finishing what you set out to do, losing the joy, granny swimming, and so much more!

From macyswim.com: My parents have always told me that I could swim long before I could walk.  I would terrify the lifeguards by launching myself from the diving board at the age of 2 and swimming underwater to the wall.  It wasn’t too long after this that my parents enrolled me into USA Swimming.  From there the rest you can say is history.  I spent much of my childhood chasing the black line on the bottom of the pool.  This drive and competition lasted through college.

After college, I thought it was necessary to find out what life had to offer away from the 8 pool lanes and the chlorinated water.  I explored the world and moved to many new places.  Upon my move to Oregon, I needed a way to meet new people.  I again returned to the pool and met fellow water enthusiasts.  It was like coming back home.

Not long after returning to the pool, I was in a training class and the question was posed to me.  “If you had all the time in the world, what would you do?”  My post-it note quickly was filled with “I’d swim the English Channel”.  Now I thought this was some joke.  It was as if my subconscious had taken over and written this goal down before I had a chance to argue.

Well, there it was and thus my marathon swimming career began.  From my first tentative strokes in cold open water, I knew I was hooked. I had found my passion.  I did successfully complete the English Channel for the first time in September 2007 and was the fastest American for the Channel Swimming Association in a time of 10 hours and 2 minutes.

I also began to learn that through my swimming I could help the lives of others.  I set a goal to raise $50,000 for Breast Cancer Research through my swimming. (Donations are always welcomed.)  Three years later and I’ve reached the halfway point and just like in my swimming I intend to put one arm in front of the other until my swimming dreams and fundraising goals are fulfilled.

16 Jun 2020Kristin Valentine's Marathon Swim Story00:29:30

Send us a text

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories we chat with an adventure addicted cyclist and Ironman triathlete who taught herself how to swim. Kristin Valentine completed her first marathon swim event in 2019 when she swam 9 miles across Lake Massawippi as part of the Northeast Kingdom Swim Week in far northern Vermont. We laugh about not being attached to the outcome, resetting expectations, enjoying the adventure, the community, and so much more!

In her own words: I grew up swimming in cold lakes and rivers in the Pacific Northwest, although I didn’t actually learn any actual swim strokes until I decided to do a triathlon in 2007. I got a book out from the library, watched a few videos online, and figured it out. After a few triathlons, I focused on cycling for the next decade and didn’t get back into the water until 2017 when I got talked into doing an Ironman. I met open water swimmers through triathlon and it wasn’t long until I found myself swimming 5 miles down the Columbia river, swimming in freezing water in January, and staying up all night to swim in the Bay in February. My first marathon event was swimming across Lake Massawippi (9 miles) as part of the Northeast Kingdom Swim Week last summer.

18 Jun 2020Morag Hughes' Marathon Swim Story00:29:43

Send us a text

In this episode of marathon swim stories we had a delightful conversation with an ice and marathon swimmer from the West Highlands of Scotland. Morag Hughes schools us in how to say loch correctly and shares tales of spending the last two decades swimming the tarns and loches of Scotland. In 2010 she became the oldest female to swim across the English Channel, a record that she held for 8 years. We chat about an intense love of water, the Ye Amphibious Bathing Association, being stubborn, recovering from a broken arm to swim the English Channel, ghostly encounters, and so much more!

In her own words: I have been enjoying open water swimming for 42 years. Initially swimming breaststroke as I couldn’t swim front crawl for any distance. Worked on this and began entering BLDSA, YAABA and SASA events increasing my distance. I am a slow steady swimmer who gets there in the end. I seem to have the ability to make Lochs boil when I go into them for long swims. Swims I have done are English Channel solo and relay Loch Lomond 21 miles overnight solo Loch Lomond relay Loch Shiel 18 miles Loch Maree 13 miles Loch Morar 11 Loch Rannoch 10 Two way St Mary’s Loch 6 miles Loch Oich Half Loch Lochy Loch Lubnaig Loch Ore Lough Erne Windermere Conniston Champion of Champions Sea swims Rhu point to the Island of Eigg Mallaig to Inverie (which has the remotest pub on the British Mainland) Loch Eil, 3k in Holland. Canal swim at Sluis in Holland where you swam into Belgium and back. II also swim throughout the Winter and have completed the Polar Bear Challenges the last two years. Gold Challenge 2018/2019 swimming 250m twice per month from November to March and a total minimum distance of 5000m Jedi Challenge 2019/2020 swimming 250 twice per month November to March and a total of 3000m each month plus 2000m and 1500m at 9 degrees or under 1750m and 1250m at 8 degrees or under 1500m and 1000m at 7 degrees or under 1250m and 7t50 at 6 degrees and under 1000m and 450m at 5 degrees and under The above swims could be included in the 3000m per month. I completed just over 65,000m during the Jedi Challenge.

I am the first person to swim the lengths of Loch Shiel, Loch Maree, and Loch Morar.

When I swam the channel in 2010 I became the oldest female to complete it with the Channel Swim Association a record I held for 8 years.

I have also used my swims to raise money for Local and National charities, a local Community Council and a restoration project.

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories, I chat with the cofounder of the Marathon Swimmers Federation and creator of LongSwims Database and track.rs, Evan Morrison. In February 2020, Evan became the first person to swim San Francisco's Round Trip Angle Island swim in winter, with temp in the low 50's, for nearly 9 hours. We talk about putting everything out of your mind, finding ways to give back to the sport, how you always remember the feeling of completing a marathon swim and so much more.

In his own words: I grew up swimming in Santa Barbara, California, and am currently based in San Francisco. I’ve done marathon swims around Manhattan, up the length of Tampa Bay, across the Catalina and Santa Barbara Channels, and was the first person to swim San Francisco’s Round-Trip Angel Island in the winter. My Santa Barbara Channel swim was featured in the documentary film DRIVEN (driven.vhx.tv). I co-founded the Marathon Swimmers Federation (marathonswimmers.org) and currently serve as president of the Santa Barbara Channel Swimming Association (santabarbarachannelswim.org). My focus in recent years has been on developing the LongSwims Database (longswims.com), the track.rs GPS tracking service, and standards for documenting independent marathon swims.

12 May 2020Kris Rutford's Marathon Swim Story00:30:03

Send us a text

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories we talked to long time marathon swimmer Kris Rutford about the process, being committing to your commitment, how the same swim can always be different, and much more!

In his own words: I have been swimming my entire life.  It is really the only sport I have ever participated in.   I swam for the University of Nebraska 1977-1981 as a sprinter.   After college I continued to swim just to stay in shape and then suggested to a friend that “anybody can swim the English Channel”.  Needless to say, he took that as a challenge and successfully completed the Channel in 1986 with me as his trainer.  We reversed roles and I completed the English Channel in 1988.  That was my first “marathon swim”.   Having met another swimmer in Dover who suggested I try the swim around Manhattan, I became curious and as luck would have it made my first trip to NY and swam around the island 3 weeks later.  So that is proof that there was some sort of marathon swimming community back in the 80s, it just happened by word of mouth – no internet, Facebook, Zoom or cell phones.  Now 32 years later I have completed the Manhattan swim 23 times, every one of them different.  In 1995 I was the first person to complete the Manhattan Island swim clockwise.  In 2016 I finally got to the west coast and did the Catalina Island swim to complete the Triple Crown some 28 years after the first 2 legs.

In my day job I am a CPA employed as a tax accountant for a local public accounting firm.

23 Jun 2020Paula Yankaukas' Marathon Swim Story00:32:08

Send us a text

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories, we spoke to Paula Yankauskas, an endurance swimmer, veterinarian, and new grandmother. After completing the Catalina Channel in 2018, Paula became the third oldest individual to complete a Triple Crown - though she doesn't focus on her age, she's happy to motivate people to swim into their senior years! We talk about how swimming keeps you fit, meeting kindred swim spirits all over the world, and when someone "thinks you can" swim across the English Channel - so you do.

In her own words: Paula Yankauskas grew up in central Connecticut and always loved the water – the summer she turned 11, the City of New Britain opened its outdoor municipal pools – four 25 meter pools, and one 50 meter pool – spread out over different city neighborhoods. In the East End of New Britain, the home pool for those residents was Chesley Pool, and it was there that Paula spent nearly all daylight summer hours for the next five years. When she turned 16, she was eligible to work for New Britain Parks & Recreation; at Chesley, there was only an opening for locker attendant. Paula worked it for a short time; when the lifeguard Captain of Stanley Pool (the 50 meter facility) asked if she’d consider joining their Lifeguard roster; all loyalty to the “neighborhood” vanished, and she took the job at the rival pool Stanley, taking on coaching the swim team as well as teaching swimming (WSI - babies to adults) in addition to Lifeguard duties.

Paula is now a Vermont Swimmer – she first came to Vermont for college in 1972; attending UVM for undergraduate work (she was on the swim team for 7 semesters) and put in 1 year toward a Masters’ degree in Physics before getting into veterinary school. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in Philadelphia in 1981.

Central to Paula’s focus are 3 things: LVVS, family, and swimming, and not necessarily in that order (the attention devoted to each varies on a daily basis). LVVS and family took over for the 20 years between education and the 2001 opening of The Swimming Hole in Stowe; but once she had a pool to stretch out in, she was set to return to swimming and has not looked back. To top it all off, the Green River Reservoir State Park is in Paula’s home town of Hyde Park, Vermont - it is a “quiet” body of water (no power boats), so ideally suited for open water swimming.

She founded Lamoille Valley Veterinary Services (LVVS), in 1985 as a mixed animal practice and over the years it has evolved into a 5 doctor, full-service facility for small animals, mostly cats and dogs. Paula’s current focus is on behavioral and emotional health of dogs and cats.

An endurance athlete, Paula has at times held titles for age – she was formerly the oldest person on record to have swum the length of Lake Memphremagog  - September 2014, 25 miles, at 60 years. And currently, for the third oldest (average age) for the Triple Crown of open water swimming, having completed the English Channel in 2016 at 62, the Manhattan Island Marathon in 2017 at 63, and the Catalina Channel in 2018 at 64. She does think the age thing gets a little “old” at times, but is happy to motivate people to swim into their senior years, or even get started then.

30 Jun 2020Blaik Ogle's Marathon Swim Story00:34:05

Send us a text

This stormy Knoxville morning, we chatted with the founder of Bridges to Bluffs, Knoxville Open Water Swimmers, and marathon swimmer himself, Blaik Ogle. Quick to dismiss his accomplishments, Blaik focused the conversation on building community in Knoxville, but I got him to tell us a little bit about tackling the cold, not taking no for an answer, and getting stuck in a tree on a birthday swim.

In his own words: I am 40 years old and I live in Knoxville, Tennessee. I'm the co-founder of the Knoxville Open Water Swimmers and Co-founder/Director Bridges to Bluffs Open Water Swim.

Prior to the pandemic I was training for SCAR and Catalina. Now I spend my time cross training with heavy weights - both to be faster in the water and survive the “Real Life Hunger Games .... Southern States Coronavirus, Global Warming, and Systemic Racism Edition.”

I enjoy cold water swims, introducing new open water swimmers to year round/ distance/ night swimming, beagles, breakfast burritos, and dismantling the patriarchy of systemic racism with my white privilege and hillbilly accent.

Goals: Keeping “Bridges to Bluffs” on track to become the “Boston Marathon of Marathon Swimming” as well as creating new and “affordable” opportunities for the marathon swim community.

In her own words: Born and raised in Vancouver British Columbia I got into marathon swimming after many years of travelling. In 2015  I came home, where I was diagnosed with a hip impingement.

As a kid synchronized swimming was my aquatic choice . As I didn’t see the point in swimming back & forth in a pool !

I became the third Canadian to achieve the Triple Crown in 2019, with my dad navigating me around Manhattan by kayak.

Locally in the Salish Sea, I swim all around Vancouver. My toughest longest challenges at home.

Last August I swam my first pioneering route from Nanaimo harbour to kitsilano beach, my home beach. This took 30 hours and 13 minutes. I was the 11th Canadian on record to go over a 24 hour period of continuous swimming.

I swim with my dad (support kayaking) in local Vancouver and Suburbs.

03 Jul 2020John "Batches" Batchelder's Marathon Swim Story00:39:24

Send us a text

Prior to the 4th of July weekend, I spent my Friday afternoon chatting with Marathon Swimmers Federation 2019 Barra Award nominee, John Batchelder. We relaxed into the interview just like John relaxes into his distance butterfly and touched on swimming for weight loss, how John became "butterfly man", being motivated by others and finding ways to reciprocate that support.

In his own words: I am John “Batches” Batchelder, a 39 year old marathon swimmer born and raised in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado. I am the fifth of six children, and swimming was a huge part of my early years, following in the footsteps of my oldest two siblings who were both very good swimmers. I learned to swim when I was 4 or 5, joined USA swimming soon after, and found some success at age 8. However when I aged up and no longer could swim the 25s, I found myself to be at best an average swimmer, and I quickly became discouraged and started to swim less and less. After 3 years of high school swimming near the back of the pack, I had completely given up on swimming.

Fast forward about 15 years, at the age of 32 I had gotten so horribly out of shape and decided to get back into swimming, joining my local US Masters Swimming team. Through them I fell back in love with the water, and I particularly enjoyed my team’s distance focused workouts. Through them I was exposed to distance swimming, starting with the 1650 free at swim meets, then the USMS postal swims, and then the USMS open water nationals. I was more and more intrigued by the longer and longer distances, and somewhere along the way I was doing so many swims that started to do some of them butterfly because I needed a break from racing them freestyle and because somehow I could. This eventually brought me into MSF and other open water swimming communities, and I haven’t looked back since. Highlights include the Tampa Bay Marathon swim, ENDWET, 20 Bridges, In Search of Memphre, 3 Rivers Marathon Swim, the Catalina Channel, and the Capri-Napoli Marathon Swim.

Outside of swimming my hobbies are recreational mathematics (think math puzzles and riddles), playing bridge, and solving crossword puzzles. I love to travel, which these days goes hand in hand with open water swimming. Above all, even though I am very quiet and shy, I do love hanging out with my fellow open water swimmers and following what everyone else is swimming.

03 Jul 2020Shannon Keegan's Marathon Swim Story00:40:09

Send us a text

In this episode of Marathon Swim Stories, Elaine Howley interviewed me! It's easy to see why I prefer to be the interviewer as listen to myself struggle to find words and endure the play by play of my swimming history, and while the fear of messing up my kids is real, it isn't as paralyzing as it sounds when you listen to this!

My bio: I grew up frequenting neighborhood pools and found my way to year around swimming before I was 10, but it took another 25 years for me to discover the bliss of swimming in the great outdoors. I quickly caught the marathon swim bug and long to swim further.

In the last decade I've moved across the country and back again, married, brought two energetic boys into the world and taught them to swim. I can't wait to see if they are limit pushers like myself, and hope that they'll support me in my swims around the world as I encourage them to be kind, loving, curious, and empathetic in everything they endeavor.

When I'm not seeking the perfect organization method for LEGOs, drawing, coloring, or exploring with my boys, I love to empower others to swim efficiently and push their limits in the water @intrepidwater. http://intrepidwater.com

07 Jul 2020Liz Fry's Marathon Swim Story00:38:29

Send us a text

I had to prod International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honoree, Liz Fry, several times before she finally agreed to be our guest on Marathon Swim Stories. What a treat it was to hear her tell tales from her nearly 2 decade long career. The oldest person to complete the Oceans Seven, and the only person to ever double all of the lakes in the 4 day, 41 mile SCAR swim challenge - that's right, 82 miles in 4 days! Liz is incredibly humble about here accomplishments while quietly motivating marathon swimmers the world over with her achievements and her words of encouragement.

In her own words: I was born in New York City but learned to swim when we moved to Long Beach, Long Island at the municipal swimming pool.  We moved to Westport, Connecticut when I was in 6th grade and I joined the age group team at the YMCA.  I swam at the University of Connecticut and then after college started working and stopped swimming. I didn’t think people swam after college.  Luckily, I came back to Westport before moving into NYC for a Wall Street job and started swimming with the local Masters team.  It was there I met amazing “adults” who showed me that swimming was a lifetime sport. Unfortunately, city life, graduate school, and long work hours led me away from swimming to running through most of the 1990s.

I always loved to swim and body surf.  As a kid my dream was to swim the English Channel.  My father was British so as children we five kids heard constantly that to be a “real” swimmer, you would have to conquer this swim.  I was very blessed that he was still alive and came to Dover, UK  in 2003 when I completed it.

I am a little dorky – my day job is consulting to global banks, broker-dealers and capital market firms on corporate strategy and tax & compliance initiatives. Outside of work, I volunteer as the Marathon Director for the St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound which fundraises over $2 million to support patients and their families impacted by cancer. I started an event called the “January Jam” in 2008 in honor of Dave Parcells that raises funds for MS while challenging participants to swim as much as they can for the month of January.   I also volunteer as a coach/mentor and judge for the Fordham Foundry Pitch Challenge, Fordham University’s hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. As a member of the Board of Directors, I have led the development of strategic plans for the Westport/Weston YMCA and Safe Haven for Ethiopia (SHYE) a non-profit 501(c)3 organization operating in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. SHYE runs a children’s center which serves 115 impoverished children between the ages of five and eighteen.

Swimming-wise I am self funded and have an amazing crew led by my sister Peggy.  We have been to lots of beautiful places, experienced wonderful cultures and met incredible people.  I am so thankful for all the support I have received along the way from fellow swimmers, organizers and boat captains.

09 Jul 2020Vera Rivard's Marathon Swim Story00:30:38

Send us a text

We had a wonderful opportunity to chat with 16 year old phenom Vera Rivard, just days after her successful circumnavigation of Manhattan. Vera has already completed the 25 mile In Search of Memphre in 2018 and is crossing her fingers that she can make good on her English Channel window in August despite the pandemic of 2020. Vera describes a very similar experience to my own, as to how she found out about marathon swimming, just a few years ago and has been building distance ever since.

In her own words: Vera Rivard is 16 years old. Swims include: All Kingdom Swim distances, 25 mile In Search of Memphre, Cork Distance Week 2019 swimmer, 3 time Winter Swim participant (all events) on Lake Memphremagog, a double Lake Willoughby crossing, a double Lac Massawippi crossing and new this week she completed 20 Bridges NYOW.

14 Jul 2020Dan Simonelli's Marathon Swim Story00:34:29

Send us a text

If you've done the Catalina Channel, you've likely heard of, met, or had our guest, Dan Simonelli, as you kayaker! In 2015, Dan received the Marathon Swimmers Federation Streeter Award for Service to Marathon Swimming, and in fact has supported over 200 marathon swims as either coach, crew chief, support crew, or kayaker. A testament to his own marathon swimming pursuits, in 2016 Dan received the MSF Barra Award for Most Prolific Year, the same year that he commemorated the anniversary of the first crossing of the Catalina Channel in January, a swim tale that he shares in this episode.

In his own words: I grew up swimming on summer swim teams. I started swimming regularly in the ocean while I was in the Marine Corp stationed at Camp Pendleton. I subsequently worked as an Ocean Lifeguard for several years while going back to college.

Then after many years out of the water, I started swimming again in 2009 when a friend coaxed me into joining their team for the La Jolla 10 Mile Relay, and I’ve just kept swimming since then.

In 2012 I founded Open Water Swim Academy as I had noticed a demand from people wanting to experience swimming in the open water but needed guidance. As my own swimming progressed to going longer and training for channel swims and other marathon swims, my coaching and support of others’ swims continued to grow as well.

I’ve since supported over 200 Marathon swims in various roles: coach, crew chief, support crew or kayaker.

Some of my swims include SCAR twice, English Channel, Catalina Channel twice, other various relays and solo swims around the other CA Channel Islands and many other places such as Hawai’i, San Francisco, Florida, New York, Mexico, Italy, England.

I think the swim I’m most proud of is my second Catalina Channel which I did in January 2016 to commemorate the anniversary of the first crossing on Jan 16, 1927, becoming the second person to do so.

I’ve been the La Jolla Cove Swim Club President since 2012. I’m a voting Board member of the Catalina Channel Swimming Federation, and a member of the voting panel for the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.

16 Jul 2020Jia Jung's Marathon Swim Story00:33:54

Send us a text

I can almost remember the first time that Jia joined us at Marathon Swim Stories way back in the early days of the pandemic. She's been a constant on our calls, and today I finally got to hear her story! Jia is a an award winner and product of the New York City Parks and Recreation Adult Lap Swim Program and somehow feels hard pressed to call herself an athlete? Labels aside, I spot a fellow limit pusher, and I love how Jia talks about opening her mind to the possibilities as you hear her tales of swims in Boston, New York, New Jersey, Key West, Lido Key, Charleston, and Busting the Canadian Border in Vermont. A hard core marathon swimmer, among other things, she describes spontaneously adapting and out of body experiences.

In her own words: Jia H. Jung is still hard pressed to call herself an athlete since this all started as good fun. Apparently magnetized by water from birth, she participated in a mother-baby swim class before she can remember. As a result, the rest of her childhood ripples with magical memories of water off New England's shores, lakes at summer camp, the Y, and other people's pools. In college at the University of California, Berkeley, her NCAA rower roommate dragged her to the gym to acquaint her with the concept of voluntary exercise. In retaliation, Jia dragged her pal to the Hearst rooftop pool to suntan at the bleachers beside the 33 1/3-yard pure marble tank. She jumped in to cool down by drifting to the other side and back, only she didn't stop until some 25 laps later, by which time the notion of swimming continuously and at length had firmly taken root.

Her first open water swim was the highly experimental, inaugural 1-mile Charles River swim in 2007 in her home city of Boston. Her longest swim in distance since then has been the 15-mile Stage 4 of the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim in 2014, which she chose in blissful ignorance at the time solely for its scenery. Her longest swim so far in terms of time was the 10.5 hours before a DNF in Lake Memphremagog in 2019, after busting the US-Canada border. And there have been plenty of other swims in between these, each with a tale of  its own.  Having "done time" in New York City for the past decade, she gives special thanks to the Adult Lap Swim program of the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation for providing her with an outlet to train and stay sane before and after work every summer (except this summer) in the behemoth, historically significant pools around the city. She has swum hundreds of miles in those pools, and won a trophy, or even two, for most years of her participation in the program.

When not swimming, Jia  performs Polynesian dance with Lei Pasifika, podcasts sporadically, and organizes a charity Jeff Buckley tribute concert every November. She is working on her late father's biography, among a bunch of other writing projects, and looks forward to embarking on a part-time Master of Science program at Columbia Journalism School this fall while holding down the full-time job she is extremely grateful to have as a regulator of surgical trials supporting the heroic Department of Surgery at the Columbia University Medical Center.

17 Jul 2020Naji Ali's Marathon Swim Story00:53:57

Send us a text

An amazing story teller with many a story to tell, I could talk to Naji all day! But we finally cut ourselves off after just under an hour. A late onset swimmer, Naji was 43 when he learned to swim and wants nothing to do with pool swimming. "Out there" he says, referring to the Pacific ocean as the place that he wants to practice what he preaches as a Total Immersion Swim Coach. Naji strives to raise awareness of the rich history of black swimmers and while he would prefer to be just another number when swimming around islands and across channels, he'll settle for blazing the path for future African American Marathon Swimmers, being the first in most of his pursuits, along with Charles Chapman, Mina Rhoden, and Alice Dearing, to name a few.

Naji refers to his interview with Charles Chapman, the first African American to cross the English Channel, it's a great listen, here are links to each episode: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

In his own words: Naji Ali is a Total Immersion swim coach and marathon swimmer. he began his long distance open water swim obsession back in 2008, and has never looked back. He lives in San Francisco, CA, where he works full time at a soup kitchen, he lives with his wife, Chrissy, and their mischievous cat named, Mrs. Chippy.

21 Jul 2020Maureen McCoy's Marathon Swim Story00:33:08

Send us a text

Marathon Swim Stories has been a gift to me in so many ways, and how about this one, meeting a kindred spirit halfway around the world in Northern Ireland! Michelle Macy recommended that I find out Maureen McCoy's story, and I'm so glad that we connected. Maureen literally wrote the book on wild swimming in Ireland - https://wildswim.wordpress.com/! And her love of swimming shines through in our conversation. She even recommends a few of her favorite swim spots in case you're planning a post pandemic trip to Ireland! Enjoy!

In her own words: Author, Wild Swimmer, Marathon Swimmer, Swim Tutor
Having swum in the sea, loughs and rock pools with her family since she was a small child, in 2009, just after her fortieth birthday, she fulfilled her childhood ambition to swim the English Channel.

Maureen, amongst other swims, was Irish Ladies 17km Champion in 2006, she was in the first relay team to complete the full length of the two lough Ernes, Co Fermanagh, completed her English Channel solo in 2009 and the Pennock Island Challenge swim in Alaska in 2013. She also completed the Ice mile in 2015 and has since been exploring Ireland for hidden swim spots and writing.

Maureen trained as a lifeguard and swimming teacher and has been teaching and coaching swimming for 30+ years, including developing the Couch to 5km Swim Program with Waterways Ireland and FLOW Swimming Northern Ireland Open Water Coaching.

Maureen joined a local writing group in 2010 and began to write poetry and articles on swims, several of which were published in The Swimming Times, local and national papers.

She published her first book, Wild Swimming in Ireland 2016 (Collins Press ISBN 978-1-84889-280-4) with photographer Paul McCambridge
In her role as a Swim Ireland Tutor she now helps to train the next generation of swim teachers.

Maureen enjoys outdoor swimming throughout the year and she always keeps a swimsuit in her car – just in case.

23 Jul 2020Darren Miller's Marathon Swim Story00:37:18

Send us a text

After a foot injury halted his ultra marathon running career, Darren Miller read Swimming to Antarctica, and was inspired by Lynne Cox. He immediately set his sights on the English Channel. Within 3 years, in August 2013, Darren was the fourth person and the second American to complete the Oceans Seven - completing each of the grueling channel swims in a single attempt.

Darren oozes passion for doing and sharing what he loves with others and raises money for Team Forever at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh in the process.

Continuing to host the Three Rivers Marathon Swim in Pittsburgh is important to Darren as he also encourages us to plan something where we're at. He hints at some "never been done before" swims that are on his radar while he runs and plots race courses in the heat of the Palm Springs desert.

In his own words: Darren Miller was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In August 2013, he completed the ‘Oceans Seven’ on all first attempts to benefit his charity, Team Forever at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He currently resides in Palm Springs, California with his two children, Reagan and Penn.

24 Jul 2020Sandra Frimerman-Bergquist's Marathon Swim Story00:53:11

Send us a text

I could barely contain my excitement when talking to today's guest, a professional marathon swimmer, Sandra Frimerman-Bergquist. As we discuss in the episode, Sandra has been knocking her swimming dreams out of the park the last few years, participating in the FINA Marathon and Ultramarathon Swim Series, setting the record for the St Lucia channel, swimming the Traversee du Lac St Jean, and so much more!

In her own words: I was born in Walnut Creek, CA. I grew up in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. I started swimming after Janet Evans Olympic performance in Seoul against the East Germans. After trying a local 5 mile lake swim I knew that I was much better suited for open water rather than the constraints of the pool. I went to and swam at Eden prairie high school. I attended the University of Northern Iowa and St. Cloud State University. Studying environmental studies and water treatment. I decided to make it my goal to become a professional athlete after attending an open water safety conference in 2011 and learning about the FINA world marathon and ultramarathon series. Specifically the famed Traversee Internationale du Lac St. Jean 32KM Crossing. Along the way, I have completed over 35 swims of 10km or longer since 2012. My first swim of 10km or more came at the 27mile edition of END-WET in 2012, To completing the 36mile version of END-WET 4 consecutive times. I accomplished my dream of becoming a “professional” Swimmer in 2018 with 2 FINA Marathon Series 10km races in Canada. I reached my other goal of the completing the Traversee du lac St. Jean swim in 2019, along with another famed Ultramarathon, the 54th edition of The Maratono Del Golfo Capri Napoli, a 36KM swim from the Island of Capri to Naples, Italy.

28 Jul 2020Mark Sheridan's Marathon Swim Story00:39:17

Send us a text

Today we spoke with Mark Sheridan from his office in London. Growing up Mark was an all around athlete, but couldn't conceive of swimming more than a mile until relatively recently. Being smack dab in the middle of the financial crisis as an employee of Leman Brothers in 2008, he sought the pool for comfort.  After hiring a coach about a decade ago he was able to rapidly increase distance once his form improved.

Since then, Mark has become a distance swimming addict. After swimming through the entire British Long Distance Swimming Association calendar he started knocking out swims in the United States. In addition to achieving swimming nirvana, Mark has logged several British firsts along the way. While he's done the English channel a few times Mark prefers swimming in a lake surrounded by mountains.

In his own words: My name is Mark Sheridan. I live near Sevenoaks in Kent (UK) and am a mad keen open water ultra-distance swimmer. I have completed many swims over 21 miles including 43 mile Lac Leman (4th solo ever & 1st Brit), the English Channel (twice), Loch Lomond (44th person), the Catalina Channel in California, Two-way Windermere, Lake Tahoe, Lake Memphremagog and SCAR to name a few...I served on the committee of the British Long Distance Swimming Association for 7 years (President 2017), am the Swim Secretary the famously gruelling 9-mile Champion of Champions and distance training camps. I was awarded British Long Distance Swimming Association's Swimmer of the Year in 2013 and also won the Global Marathon Swimming Federation's Barra Award for Best Year in 2015. Above all, I enjoy sharing my experiences to help others reach their goals and giving back to this wonderful sport on a voluntary basis. I currently hold the British record for Lake Tahoe solo which I set in August 2018 taking almost 90mins off the prior benchmark. In June 2019, I completed 20 Bridges to bag the title of 'Triple Crown'.

Be sure to enjoy Mark's blog!

30 Jul 2020Marcia Cleveland's Marathon Swim Story00:43:03

Send us a text

Today we chatted with a marathon swimmer who first circumnavigated Manhattan in 1991. In 1994, she crossed the English Channel, documenting her preparation in her book Dover Solo. Upon completing the Catalina Channel in 2005 Marcia Cleveland set the record for the fastest Triple Crown, a record that still stands today. And she's still swimming marathons, having completed the Tsugaru Straight just last year.

I can relate to so much to what Marcia says about the pieces all coming together and everything working out just right so that you can complete a long swim! Once you're a mom, there's a whole new meaning to "shore support" - and actually getting to the start of a swim can feel like half the battle. After that, all you have to do is swim…

While also a marathon swimming mom of two kids, I feel like I'm quite the opposite of Marcia, who has kept logs of every single training swim since she was 15 years old! In comparison, I feel like I barely prioritize swimming, but know that I revel in each opportunity that I make.

The pure fact that Marcia started marathon swimming nearly 30 years ago is amazing enough, but the fact that she pushed on with toddlers, young kids, teenagers, and now continues with kids on their way to college is completely awe inspiring to me, I hope you're also inspired!

In her own words: Marcia Cleveland has been a swimmer all her life.  After her successful age group and collegiate careers, she began swimming Masters (USMS) in her early twenties.  Shortly thereafter, she discovered Open Water Swimming, and all the tranquility and challenge it offers.  Besides competing in swims and races all over the world, Marcia holds the fastest cumulative time for the Triple Crown and is second in the Grand Slam rankings.  She is a 2020 Honoree into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.  Her book, Dover Solo, which depicts the training and preparation she did for her English Channel swim, has become a “must read” for all serious open water swimmers. Her website, DoverSolo.com, contains comprehensive information and logs for all her marathon swims.

Besides her personal aquatic accomplishments, Marcia instructs, advises, coaches, and certifies water enthusiasts.  She has coached open water swimmers since 1995, helping a multitude successfully achieve major long distance marathon swims. The USMS team she coaches has over 30 members. In 2018, Marcia became an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and has certified over 50 individuals to be lifeguards in the past year. Between 1999 and 2009, Marcia served on several local and national USMS swimming committees and was the Chair of the USMS Open Water Long Distance Committee for 4 years.  She currently offers personal training, clinics, and coaching for swimmers at all levels, as well as ARC Lifeguard Certification, including CPR, AED, & First Aid Training. She is lives in the Chicago, Illinois, USA area with her husband, Mark Green and their two children.

04 Aug 2020Melinda Menzer's Marathon Swim Story00:43:58

Send us a text

Lately I've spent some time with my kids looking at a globe, "if you fly over it, can you see the border?" they ask.

No. These are lines drawn by man. Man argues, wars, and discriminates over lines, I tell them.

As today's guest, Melinda Menzer says, "you can't fence in the water", and she loves swimming across those silly lines that are drawn on maps. To demonstrate the fluidity of borders, Melinda swam from the US to Mexico and back last year, in the process raising over $10,000 for HIAS, the world's oldest refugee agency.

I loved hearing Melinda's story for so many reasons, I hope you do to - please enjoy this episode!

In her own words: Melinda Menzer is a long-distance open water swimmer and the swimmer behind Swim for HIAS, a project to raise money and awareness for HIAS, the world's oldest refugee agency. Melinda began swimming as a child but picked up open water swimming as an adult in 2011. She has swum some of the major American events, including Swim the Suck and SCAR. A few years ago, she decided to put her love for swimming to work for her commitment to the United States' historic role as a sanctuary for refugees and asylum seekers. In November 2019, she swam 10.2 miles across Amistad Reservoir on the Texas/Mexico border, crossing from the U.S. to Mexico and back; she raised over $10,000 for HIAS while making real the idea that borders are fluid. She is inspired by other great swimmers such as Lynne Cox and Yusra Mardini, who have swum across borders to bring people together in freedom.

11 Aug 2020Jennifer Dutton's Marathon Swim Story00:39:59

Send us a text

Jennifer Dutton started marathon swimming across Candlewood lake in Connecticut as a teenager in the 80's. 10 miles as part of a fundraiser swim - "Everyone did it. It wasn't a big deal. We didn't even train." she says.

Now a mother to two college aged kids, Jennifer recently brought marathon swimming full circle by completing 27 miles in Lake Cochituate at her parents house. It wasn't the swim she wanted to do this year, but with her parents, who were her first supporters, cheering her on, and her son, who she was pregnant with during one of her many Boston Light swims, kayaking for her, you can hear in her voice how special it was.

In her own words: Jennifer Dutton (nee Spencer) had a most ordinary high school swim career in Connecticut, then attempted college swimming at Bates College (ME) after a severe brain injury during freshman orientation. That season did not go very well, but she had completed a local 10-mile swim just prior to her injury and she soon found that the open water welcomed her back unconditionally. Since then, she has gone on to complete a wide variety of challenging open water marathon swims, including three firsts in Torch Lake in Michigan, and Keuka Lake and Great Sacandaga Lake in New York.

Jen has been a high school coach in MetroWest (mostly at Wellesley High School) for nearly 20 years, and has completed two, two-year stints as an assistant coach at Wellesley College. She has been a local Masters coach for two decades and is a USMS Certified Level 3 Coach. She has two college-aged kids who swim and play water polo and a husband who is her tireless support crew.

18 Aug 2020Qing Li's Marathon Swim Story00:50:09

Send us a text

In this episode I spoke with Qing Li who started her story off by reminding us that not taking a risk is a risk in itself. Wise beyond her years, Qing's investment in self discovery after a successful, but extremely stressful English Channel swim, is sure to pay dividends in whatever she pursues next in swimming and in life. Qing was so open, honest, and shared so many pearls of wisdom throughout our conversation - I laughed, cried, and found myself wondering if I was doing enough in my own life as she reminded me, "Don't let anything get in the way of what you love, not even yourself." Qing's positivity is infectious, and I just love her energy, enthusiasm, and emotion.

In her own words: I am a lifelong swimmer and owes my success in completing the Triple Crown to the people who believed in my crazy ideas. Swimming the English Channel was a seed of an idea as a teenager that started a deep personal and spiritual journey for me. Starting with the English Channel in 2011 and coming back to round out the Triple Crown and Grand Slam with 20 Bridges - 2018, Tampa Bay Marathon Swim - 2019, and Catalina Channel - 2019. Through this journey I can say that the open water swimming community has truly taught me so much about believing in myself, living with purpose, and letting go of fear.I strive to inspire people from all walks of life to reach just a little higher and push the boundaries of their comfort zone. I love seeing the joy of someone who accomplishes something they never thought they could.

21 Aug 2020Anthony McCarley's Marathon Swim Story00:48:33

Send us a text

In today's episode I spoke with Anthony McCarley. Two months before his 50th birthday, Anthony decided to fulfill his boyhood dream of swimming the English Channel. It took another 4 years, before his dream would come true. He's gone on to pioneer marathon swim routes, both in maturity and in new locations. Anthony insists that the only reason he continues to swim marathons is because of the community. Admittedly outcome driven, I immediately identified with Anthony. And I love how he's analyzed and broken down the attributes of a swim and applied those lessons to life. Both his, as well as his business clients. We could all learn a thing or two from Marathon swimmers! You're sure to pick up some helpful tips in this episode. Enjoy!

In his own words: Anthony has completed solo marathon swims around the world, including the Triple Crown (English Channel, around Manhattan, Catalina Channel). On his last swim, in November, he became the first non-South American and the oldest person to complete Travessia do Leme ao Pontal in Brazil.

25 Aug 2020Sylvia Lacock's Marathon Swim Story00:47:05

Send us a text

I first met Sylvia Lacock in 2019 at the marina in Camp Richardson about an hour before I set off for my swim across the length of lake Tahoe. At the time I was impressed by her knowledge of the lake, thoroughness in covering safety, and professionalism as a pilot. Later I came to find out that Sylvia had a marathon swim story all her own - FINALLY I pinned her down to tell us all about it.

In her own words: Adult-onset swimmer (33) now 50, with a few marathon swims completed, with the longest being a solo Catalina Channel in 2014. These days she spends more time at the helm as a USCG-licensed Captain and co-owner of Pacific Open Water Swim Co. with more than 2,000 hours per year piloting swimmers. Sylvia is currently working on her Master Captain's License and teaching others to become licensed. She is an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Golden Gate Flotilla and board member for the Northern California Open Water Swimming Association and Lake Tahoe Open Water Swimming Association.

01 Sep 2020Catherine Breed's Marathon Swim Story00:36:55

Send us a text

Today's guest is an Olympic Trials qualifier and Pan American gold medalist. Catherine Breed has always loved the water. She wasn't sure what to do after her college career swimming ended, but fortuitously, a friend introduced her to the Dolphin club, based at San Francisco's Aquatic Park.

At her first open water swimming event hosted by the Dolphin Club event she was a complete unknown. She was immediately hooked. Her first marathon swim was completing the length of Lake Tahoe, in record setting time.

I love how Catherine describes marathon swimmers as having to scratch an itch. This is exactly how it transpired for me! After completing my first 10 mile open water swim, I immediately jumped on the internet trying to find out what else was out there.

Fresh on the scene, and incredibly driven, I suspect we'll be seeing a lot more of Catherine Breed in the marathon swimming world!

In her own words: Former pool swimmer for Cal, 2x Pan American Gold Medalist, and 3x Olympic trials qualifier found love of open water in 2017. Since then had completed 2/ oceans 7 and broken 3 records along the way, currently holding fastest time for Lake Tahoe. Uses her platform to bring awareness to mental health and making the sport more inclusive and accessible.

08 Sep 2020Bridget Simpson's Marathon Swim Story00:47:37

Send us a text

Bridget Simpson thought the ocean was for playing in and didn't get into open water swimming until later in life, as a mom. She set her sights on a charity swim across the width of Lake Champlain, strategically increasing her distance from 2, 4, and then completed the 8 mile Shore to Shore Lake Champlain swim.

She quickly realized that even though she wasn't fast, she could swim forever. Commonly distracted by the beauty of being out in the middle of a gorgeous lake, Bridget loves swimming at all times of the day night and commonly swims solo. Shortly after getting disqualified for missing the time cut off in the Lake George Open Water swim 10K at Hague, she set her sights on competing the 36 mile length of the lake. I'll let Bridget tell the story.

In her own words: I do not come from a swim team background, other than one semester in high school.  I’ve taught and guarded for years, but only in recent years has pool swimming become a part of my training, and largely for off season prep for meets, which I was finally brave enough to try in 2016.  Even so, I enjoy the company of swimmers, enjoy events, and like locker room chat about goals and such, but am not drawn to the daily workout with a team more typical of Masters swimmers. I swim with a group for a mile weekly or a few times a week in the summer, and can share a lane with anyone, but most of my swimming is solo.  I decide as I go what I will do and how far.

15 Sep 2020Lyn Goldsmith's Marathon Swim Story00:46:08

Send us a text

In this exemplary episode of Marathon Swim Stories I chatted with Lyn Goldsmith - at 50 she decided to start kayaking. She loved supporting marathon swimmers as the trekked around Manhattan. While a lifelong water lover, she never considered swimming herself until a transformative experience swimming in a lake in Maine in her 60's.

She tells us about her journey over the last 5 years, from her first open water swim against a stiff current where after swimming alone for some time a support boat notified her that she hadn't quite made it to the start buoy yet, to cold hamburgers after her finishing her first 10K in Bermuda, and reliving parts of her life as she swam down the East River around Manhattan.

I call it an exemplary episode because I love Lyn's Marathon Swim Story. Sure, I love hearing from world record holders, swimming pioneers, and record setting swimmers, but there is something magic about hearing from the people who find joy purely in swimming and being grateful to finish a marathon.

In her own words: Though I kayaked for swimmers going around Manhattan for about a decade, and always knew how to swim, I didn’t start swimming for love, or thinking about my stroke, until I was 62. I’ve been slowly increasing my distance and time in the open water because it’s my happy place.

22 Sep 2020Craig Lewin's Marathon Swim Story00:46:18

Send us a text

I loved hearing Craig Lewin's Marathon Swim Story. Now a triple crown finisher, Craig was one of the first Americans to travel to England earlier this year, despite the pandemic and the 14 day quarantine period, in order to successfully swim across the English Channel.

As Craig attests, it's valuable to have a coach keep you accountable as you pursue your swimming goals.

I once heard it said, as children we have role models, tutors, and coaches whether in sport or education, but somehow after we get out of school, we think we have everything figured out and rarely do people pursue coaches. If you're striving to be more, I highly recommend connecting with someone who clicks with you. If you want to see if we click, book a conversation with me at http://intrepidwater.com.

In his own words: Craig Lewin is a USA Swimming Coach, ASCA Level 2 Coach and a US Masters Swimming Level 1 & 2 coach with over 10 years of swim coaching experience. He is a graduate of Boston College with degrees in Economics and Sociology, a graduate of Salem State College with a BS in Sport Movement Science and a graduate of Northeastern University with an MS in Clinical Exercise Physiology. Craig swam collegiately for the Division 1 Men's Swimming & Diving team at Boston College. He recently completed his Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming in July of this year with his English Channel Swim. Craig has done several marathon swims, including the Boston Light Swim, Swim Across the Sound 25km and the 25km swim at the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships in 2005 & 2006. He was a support swimmer for two separate English Channel swim attempts and recently completed his own solo swim across the English Channel in 2020. Along with marathon swimming, Craig has competed in triathlon at a high level and qualified for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in 2008.

29 Sep 2020Bill Shipp's Marathon Swim Story00:40:46

Send us a text

I met Bill Shipp on a boat in the middle of a lake somewhere north of the Canadian border. I can still remember the sun trying to warm us despite the brisk fall morning air and the surprising calm on the water. The pontoon boat that was nearly swamped, as we were way over capacity. Full of cold and tired swimmers and kayakers who had been brutally beaten by the wind and waves all night long. None of us were making it to the north tip of Lake Memphremagog this day (though many would go back to complete it!).

In his own words: Bill Shipp is a Maryland based marathon swimmer, having completed numerous open water swims since first crossing the Chesapeake Bay in 2006. Since then he has steadily increased the distance and difficulty of his marathon swims having successfully completed the Triple Crown of Open water swim in 2015. The Triple Crown consists of the English Channel; the Catalina Channel; and the circumnavigation of Manhattan Island.

06 Oct 2020Sarah Eismann's Marathon Swim Story00:51:55

Send us a text

When I moved to the idyllic hamlet of Talent about 8 years ago, I was quickly adopted by my new swim family and have been lovingly supported and encouraged as I pursue marathon swims… but no one wants to swim as far as I do. That changed about a year ago when I was excitedly greeted at swim practice, "good morning Shannon! Hey, have you met Sarah? She's a marathon swimmer too!" Our schedules hardly jive, but we've connected here and there since then. It's wonderful to share the local water with a fellow limit pusher.

In her own words: Hi, I’m Sarah :) Water and swimming have always been a very big part of my life. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t swim. My parents claim I swam before I walked. But I have always felt more comfortable in the water then on land; more graceful, more in tune. I swam competitively until I was 18. Competition, racing, and especially sprints never sat well with me though.

I started doing triathlons in 2014…but I was deathly afraid of open water. My first open water (ocean) swim EVER was one month before my first triathlon. I almost fainted my heart was pounding so hard in my chest. Then I finished my first tri and was totally addicted to endurance sports.

That’s when I “discovered” long distance open water swimming. And my life changed forever. Every big life lesson that I have learned in the last three years came from hours in the water, being tossed in huge swells, following my escort boat, finding swim community, fighting pain and panic, losing myself in the dark, or just listening to my breathing. In 2017 the Viking Width of Lake Tahoe was my first ever marathon swim, and less than a year later (on my 40th birthday) I became the second woman to circumnavigate Bermuda. I’m still utterly petrified of open water where I can’t see the bottom, but I’ll take that win.

I swim because it gives me a sense of well being and a feeling accomplishment. I am completely enamored of all the sensations of being in the water, floating, feeling weightless, the feel of the water on my skin, feeling completely ensconced, the silence under the water, the noise of it rushing past my ears, the movement of gliding through perfectly still water, the power of each stroke, the blue of sky as seen from under the water, the world that exists in clear oceans, the rhythm of the waves, the undulation of swells, the perfectness of it all.

I also swim to take myself out of all that and out of my comfort zone and to push myself beyond my limits both physically and mentally. The water can be a cruel mistress. She can toss you, fight you, throw you, make you cry, make you scream…and she is always right. She is always the most powerful. To learn how to be taken on that ride, to be respectful of everything she can do, to understand you are nothing, have no power, are less significant than a single drop in that vast body of water, and come out the other side humbled, safe, and more wise than when you started…that’s the goal. If you can do that, the rest of life is a piece of pie. Life on land holds no fear, no limits, no obstacles that can’t be overcome. Just be patient with the current.

13 Oct 2020John Kenny's Marathon Swim Story00:52:53

Send us a text

John Kenny says, "I started doing all of this stuff when I was a kid". Rather than getting over fears of open water and finding out that he can swim further, I love how he describes his parents having to get over the fact that he was going to swim no matter what.

Growing up near Atlantic City, John shares his intimate knowledge of the World Cup Around the Island Swim, which has a little bit of everything. He describes the course in detail, as well as the ability to draft off your support boat, what it's like to pick your crew out of a hat, and competing against the likes of Peter Stoychev.

As a coach, I can empathize with the struggles of owning a business and trying to squeeze in my own training. Personally, I find that coaching others inspires me to keep getting out there and doing more. I think the difference is that John describes himself as a competitive kid and self motivated to the point of having to get out of his own way. Whereas I've become very comfortable in just finishing, and love fostering that spark in anyone who is similarly motivated.

In his own words: John came from a competitive swimming and running background. He was a Pennsylvania state champion in high school swimming and all-district in cross country. John went on to run for one year in college, but continued to swim for all 4 years at Cornell University. At Cornell, John was a 4-time hardest worker and a 1-time MVP of the swim team.

During his college days and beyond, John found his niche in the sport of open water swimming. Aside from working for 10 years on the Atlantic City Beach Patrol, making numerous rescues, and winning numerous lifeguard races, he also had amazing success at the National and International levels. John was a 5-time US National champion in distances ranging from 10K up to 25K. He was a 7-time National team member and has competed at a wide variety of races including Nationals, Olympic trials, Pan Ams, Pan Pacs, World Cups, and World Championships. He has been competing at local open water races since 1990, attended his first Open Water Nationals in 1997, and most recently represented the USA in the 25K at World Championships in 2008. There were many swimmers out there with more raw speed in the pool, but very few could match his experience, endurance, tactics, and innate sense of finding the fastest, most efficient way to finish an open water race. From short races to marathons, flat lake swims to rough ocean or turbulent river swims, John Kenny is the most experienced open water swimmer in the United States, if not the world. Other coaches in the triathlon realm claiming to be “open water experts” do not come close.

Beginning in 2005, John began to race professionally as a triathlete. Although it took him a while to develop his cycling skills, he has recently begun to experience more success in multisport. Aside from winning many swim primes at major races such as 70.3 races and Lifetime Fitness races, John is almost always the first out of the water, even at the highest level of the sport.

20 Oct 2020Marlys Cappaert's Marathon Swim Story00:43:32

Send us a text

When I ask my Marathon Swim Story guests for a short bio, sometimes people send me a link to their Long Swims database entry. You won't find one for today's guest, but Marlys has an unparalleled drive to find her next big swim, and her rampant swim adventuring is something that I aspire to.

Marlys and I share a passion for inspiring swimmers to do just a little bit more. This is a tried and true marathon swimming technique. Sure, you don't think you can make it? Just start? Don't think you can go any further? Just swim to the next feed. I love giving people the gift of surprising themselves, and Marlys is like Santa Claus.

A guide for Swim Trek, you're sure to want to book a trip after listening to Marlys. But the part of her story that caught my attention is her wish that a swim would never end. "I can't stop," she says. Every time I swim, "I'm better."

In her own words: Marlys grew up in Michigan with a water-crazed mother who would resort to a bathtub if she couldn’t find a lake. She is forever an adventure swimmer who will attempt to swim across nearly anything. Marlys loves enabling others to swim ‘almost’ as much as she likes swimming herself. After careers in research plant pathology, software development, and middle management, Marlys decided SwimTrek guiding was the best. Her COVID-19 winter project is building a boat.

27 Oct 2020Tracy Knight's Marathon Swim Story00:51:52

Send us a text

A fellow marathon swimming mom, Tracy Knight discovered that there might be something to this distance stuff shortly before having kids. Her clue was that she completed more distance in an hour than fellow swimmers who would smoke her in practice! Thank you US Masters ePostals!

After completing her first 5K she didn’t hesitate to make the jump to the 17K Portland Bridge swim… and thus a marathon swimmer was born.

We talk about whether uniformity of scenery should be a new metric of marathon swims, being, perhaps, a reluctant marathon swimmer, and going swimming to avoid the incessant "mom… where are my socks!".

In her own words: I did age group swim team 8-12; swam on a very low-key Division III college team and started masters swimming at 26. About 15 years ago, after reading “Swimming to Antarctica,” I realized I was a distance swimmer. As life intervened, it wasn’t until 2016 that I swam Big Shoulders 5k. I was hooked! In 2017, I did the Great Chesapeake Bay (4.4 miles), the Portland Bridge Swim (17k) and Swim the Suck. I’ve been looking for new open water challenges ever since.
