04 Aug 2022What does it mean to you, to be a leader?00:06:34

Send us a text

What does it mean to YOU to be a leader?

This is always the first question I put to all my interviewees on the Manufacturing Leaders Podcast.

As I am about to go away for a couple of weeks, and there will be a few weeks break on the podcast, I thought it would be good to recap on some of the lessons learnt so far!

Thank you so much to everyone so far who has participated or listened / watched. It really does mean so much to me that you have taken the time to give back and share with others!

What does it mean to them to be a leader?

Gareth Richards – Ops Director – Salamander Pumps

Have a clear goal and strategy – communicate that to the team . Everyone in the business needs to know exactly what you are trying to achieve

Chris Balmer – Head of Ops – AR Power

Spreading the passion and giving people a platform. Rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in as well. I wouldn’t ask someone to do something I wouldn’t.

Sam Reynolds – Engineering Manager - BHK

Be that person people come to, for help and inspiration. Be the Manager that people trust to come to with problems instead of fearful they cant.

Richard Byatt – Engineering and CI Manager – Coveris UK

The Difference  between management and leadership – Management is organising things, it’s the practical side to controlling things. Leadership is the human element. Humans need leadership direction and creating a culture.

Andy Scott – Head of HR at Darchem Engineering

A leader Is someone who develops and allows  someone grow. They don’t micro manage, they inspire enthusiasm, celebrates success with them and the team.

Phil Atkinson – Managing Director – BTS Fabrications

Think about what it actually means to YOU. He showed the importance of being a leader and what you have created. To take a step back and actually look at the positives! Passion!!

John Celino – Business Improvement Consultant

Using your experience to impart on other people. Be there for any questions. See people grow and use systems and support to do that

Randal Smith  - Managing Director - Veny

Being the person at the top of the tree, but still being able to see what is going on around you. Being a leader gives you a large scope.  Enjoy leading people and achieving as a team

Craig Conway – Production & Logistics Director – Janus International

Being the one that encourages staff and motivates them. Be the inspiring talent. A good leader isn’t all for themselves, they try to push them to achieve and grow

Dan Williams – Managing Director / CEO - Orean

Make sure you encourage people to be themselves. You may not be the best talent. Create a safe space and room to grow and develop your staff

Tom Russell – Operations Manager – TMD Friction

Enabling people to reach their potential, when often they don’t  always see It. You also don’t have to be ‘in a leadership position’ to do this. Anyone can lead and develop

Andrew Mcnally – Senior Engineering Manager – Thomas Swan

Have a vision and a strategy. Be clear about it, and what part your team plays in it. Let them see the bigger picture. As a leader, it’s your opportunity to help bring someone up and help people realise they

What makes an effective leader in today's complex manufacturing environment? Scott Lowrie, Operations Director at Fujifilm, reveals that authentic relationship-building trumps traditional command-and-control approaches every time.

"It's very easy to talk the talk, but you've got to walk the walk," Scott explains, highlighting how behaviours cascade through organisations when leaders model what they expect. The most powerful validation? Walking into a meeting room to find your team confidently running things without you – proof that empowerment truly works.

Scott challenges the outdated notion that introverts can't excel in leadership positions. His journey demonstrates how emotional intelligence and relationship-building create stronger foundations than charismatic authority. This perspective feels particularly relevant as manufacturing evolves to accommodate generational shifts in workplace expectations.

At Fujifilm's rapidly expanding operation, transparent career progression has become a cornerstone of talent retention. Their structured career ladders give employees clear pathways forward – addressing the needs of younger workers who value purpose and clarity alongside compensation. This systematic approach to development works regardless of company size, offering valuable lessons for organisations of all scales.

The conversation delves into leadership during challenging times, balancing pharmaceutical manufacturing demands with sustainability goals, and supporting a workforce with evolving mental health awareness. Scott's practical advice for aspiring leaders? "Grab as many different experiences as possible, even outside your comfort zone – you can't see it when you're young, but that depth of experience becomes invaluable later in your career."

Carole Williamson, In-Work Support and Training Officer at Durham County Council, explains why embracing neurodiversity in the workplace benefits everyone.

Key Points:

  • Neurodiversity reflects the natural variations in human cognition, yet traditional workplaces often exclude neurodivergent talent.
  • Many neurodivergent individuals mask their traits to fit in, and many—especially autistic women—remain undiagnosed.
  • Inclusive workplaces start with education, practical accommodations, and rethinking hiring processes to focus on skills, not interviews.
  • The "Four S’s" framework—See, Support, Safety, and Success—helps create a truly neuro-inclusive environment.
