Wondering if there are any manufacturing options for you that are outside of China? More and more toy makers, toy creators, and even toy companies want to expand their manufacturing resources beyond China, but they don’t know where to start. Major toy companies and retailers have announced goals to move 30%-60% of their manufacturing of toy products out of China by 2023. And where will they move them? Likely India. India is an emerging country for manufacturing in general, but especially is a current hotspot for toys, in part thanks to today’s guest.

Today on the podcast, I chat with Joshua Punin, the owner of Source 4 India. Joshua connects both small toy creators and large toy companies to factories in India that can help manufacture their toy or game ideas.

You will also learn more about current and future manufacturing capabilities in the region, the benefits and major differences between working with factories in India VS Chinese factories, and why Wal-Mart’s website listed a directive to move 30% of their manufacturing to India by 2027. 04 May 2022#124: The Effect Of Skimpflation and Shrinkflation On Toy Creators00:30:11

All across the globe we are seeing a massive increase in prices and reduction in quality. In fact it’s so prevalent, it has a few nicknames. Shrinkflation and Skimpflation are two practices of reducing the quality of goods and services to maintain margin, and reducing the actual contents of goods and quality of services while increasing the cost. Customers have noticed the change in gas prices, groceries and now even our toys. If you are a new entrepreneur, inventor, or toy maker you may think that Shrinkflation doesn’t affect you, but you’d be wrong my friend, it certainly does!

When a company performs a cost reduction exercise under a normal economic climate, they take a look at their product and make small, simple changes. The goal is typically to reduce cost without affecting overall aesthetic or playability. But when companies have to make up for 10% or more in lost margin, there’s no way around affecting the size and sometimes the quality of a product. A lower margin industry wide, and changing consumer expectations is something you could stay acutely aware of over the next year.As an inventor these monetary changes could affect the categories you focus on and as an entrepreneur or maker, it can affect the amount of components you need for your toy or game to stay competitive. If you want to maintain a cash-positive toy business you’ve got to look at the bottom line, and that means adjusting when margin and revenue take an unfortunate tumble.

When asked what it takes to create a small toy store, today’s guest answered: “Well, you have to be crazy, but that’s fine. In today’s episode you’ll learn about what it is like to start a small toy store, toy brand, and a new manufacturing technique. In today’s podcast episode, find out what it really takes to open a toy store in terms of time, money, heart, and labor.

Todays’ podcast guest, Isaac Elliott-Fisher's experiences in the film industry as a cinematographer led him to toys in an interesting and unexpected way. In my interview with Isaac, you’ll learn how it all came together. You’ll find out how much money goes into creating a brand new toy store, what kind of out-of-the-box thinking helped the process, and about the benefits of having a generous and open mindset. It is a myth that toys are shallow or don’t make an impact on kids. Today’s guest was inspired to leave a tenured position as the top professor in her field to create a meaningful line of dolls. Listen to today’s episode to discover what inspired her and how she made it happen.

14 Dec 2022#155: In-Person Interviews with Entrepreneurs At Chicago Toy and Game Week [1 of 3]01:07:35

In December of 2022, The Toy Coach Team ventured out to the windy city to set up a live podcast recording booth at Chicago Toy and Game Week, also known as CHITAG by Mary Couzin and People of Play. This annual, public toy and game fair is where toy and game brands connect with the consumers who love their products, debut new lines, and marketing activations.

During this 2 day fair, I interviewed 10 toy and game creators during this fair to learn about their toy journeys and ask them to share any toy biz wisdom they’d gathered along the way. This is Part 1 of a 3 part interview release series featuring my interviews with Dolphin Hat Games, Eblox, Pockimals, and Project Genius.

The video of these 10 interviews will be released on my YouTube channel before the end of 2022! If you don’t want to miss the video release, head over to youtube.com/thetoycoach and hit the subscribe button to be notified when they are available.

The Toy Coach Team ventured out to the windy city to set up a live podcast recording booth at Chicago Toy and Game Week, also known as CHITAG by Mary Couzin and People of Play.

This is Part 2 of a 3 part interview release series featuring my interviews with Kate Hunt, a current student in toy creators academy and the creator of the Ultimate Treehouse game. After that, we'll go right into an interview with Joe Barron Gray Matters games,  the games company with a devotion to supporting brain health. 04 Jan 2023#158: AI-Assisted Toy Design: Revolutionizing The Toy And Game Industry00:51:07

I bet that YOU can generate a high resolution concept image of your toy idea for free, and in seconds. The use of AI art exploded in recent months, with the search term “AI art” spiking in the US this past December. The breakout AI tools have been Midjourney, Lensa, and DALL-E. Since then, there has been considerable and understandable backlash against AI art from real human artists across the globe. In this episode we explore three things, 1) how AI can help the development process of your toy or game, 2) why some artists are frustrated by the growing popularity of ai art, and 3) what legal ramifications using art generated by AI could pose.

As the golden age of AI art seems to be just on the horizon, one of my favorite quotes by Tom Waits seems to be challenged. “ Fast, Cheap, and Good… pick two. If it’s fast and cheap it won’t be good. If it’s cheap and good, it won’t be fast. If it’s fast and good, it won’t be cheap.” It seems that at least for now AI art can deliver fast, cheap, and good work. Some might argue the “good” is debatable, but out of that trifecta, I think it’s the affordability of AI art of the future that we really have to worry about. What use is a free AI generated image, if you can’t use it because it infringes on the copyright of an existing artist? Find out the answer to that question and more in this podcast episode.

EPISODE CLIFF NOTES

  • Learn the 3 popular AI tools of today, Midjourney, Dalle, and Lensa.[3:28]
  • Find out why developers consider AI to be creating unique images and why artists disagree. [10:42]
  • Hear how I prompted Midjourney AI to design an actual toy! [17:21]
  • Curious if AI art can help you develop a children’s book? Maybe not entirely, but find out what it can do for your composition. [30:56]
  • Why you may not be able to use the images you generate. [39:12]
  • Find out how independent board game designers are making use of AI art. [44:26]

17 May 2023#175: The Impact of Toy Guns: A Tough Conversation00:39:13

In this thought-provoking episode of Making It in The Toy Industry, host Azhelle Wade and returning guest Marjorie Spitalnik dive into a sensitive but crucial topic - the impact of toy guns on children and the potential connection to real-life gun violence. Given the alarming statistics of gun violence in the U.S., they explore the responsibility of toy makers and the toy industry as a whole in shaping children's perceptions of violence and gun use.

Marjorie, founder of Little Rebels, shares compelling anecdotes from parents about the positive influence of her Plush Doll Line. Yet, this positive evidence also begs a challenging question - if toys can have such a profound positive impact on children's development, can they also contribute negatively, specifically when it comes to toy guns?

Join Azhelle and Marjorie as they navigate this delicate topic, probing the role of play in a child's understanding of reality and questioning whether the toy industry could be inadvertently normalizing the concept of shooting as fun. They discuss potential solutions and draw comparisons to a problematic toy from years ago.  The goal of this episode is not to provide definitive answers, but to spark a conversation about an issue that directly affects our children.

Please note, this episode deals with sensitive topics that may not be suitable for children.

30 Aug 2023#187: Making Change Through Play with TOTY Nominated Dr. Zabina Bahsin00:33:07

Dr. Zabina Bhasin began her journey of understanding the powerful role toys play in shaping a child's identity. As a child psychiatrist, she used her expertise to observe that children were naturally drawn towards toys, books, and crafts. Yet, as a mother, she noticed a distinct gap in the market - there were no multicultural or ethnic studies toys. This realization sparked an idea, a vision to create a space where children could learn about various cultures and traditions, and feel a sense of belonging. This was the birth of In KidZ, a company that was much more than just a toy manufacturer. It was a creator of connections, a builder of bridges between cultures, and a purveyor of inclusivity. No longer would children ask insensitive questions about one another's backgrounds. Instead, through play, they would learn to appreciate and respect the beautiful diversity of the world around them.

Awards and nominations not only serve as a form of recognition but also validation of an entrepreneur's efforts. They can be instrumental in boosting morale and signaling excellence within the industry. Acknowledgment of one's work can also raise public awareness about the mission or cause the entrepreneur is passionate about. Reflecting on her own nomination for the TOTY awards, Dr. Zabina Bhasin expresses her gratitude and sense of validation. It's evident that these recognitions mean the world to her as they support her aim to make an impact in the lives of children through her culturally diverse and inclusive toys. This testament reassures listeners about the commitment and dedication behind her work.

This award-nominated change maker will be at New York Toy Fair at booth #4821. Please reach out to azhelle@inkidzco.com if you want to stop by and few the latest in In KidZ product!
