28 Jun 2022124: 4 Actions Your Small Business Can Take to Make Change00:14:19

Needless to say, it has been a rough few days. As a high schooler in 2004 and 2005 working on Planned Parenthood's Teen Council, I never could have imagined that in 2022, Roe V. Wade would be overturned and pregnant people would lose the right to autonomy over their own bodies. It's been difficult, but I've been trying to give myself a lot of grace since the decision came down and to allow myself the space to process and grieve. It feels particularly challenging to focus on my business right now. But you know what? Small business owners have more power than you might think!

For today's episode, I crowd-sourced ways small businesses are taking action and organized the responses I received into four main themes. I also shout out the business owners who shared their thoughts because I think they're all worth checking out. So take a breath, give yourself a break from business as usual if you need, and when you're ready consider following the lead of some of the amazing small businesses that weighed in for this episode.

16 May 2023175: The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker (Making Good Book Club)01:01:59

This was a fun one, dear listeners.

While The Art of Gathering is not technically a business book, it is absolutely one that can be relevant for all of our businesses and I really encourage EVERYONE to read it!

So much of our lives are spent gathering –at school, at parties, with family, at religious institutions, etc. – and yet, we tend to spend very little energy thinking intentionally about what’s most important in these events… and then designing these meetings deliberately to prioritize what matters most.

The Art of Gathering is about the fact that even a simple meeting can be a transformative experience – the world or someone’s world can be just a little bit different as a result of it, and this is worth thinking through!

This episode is for ANYONE who hosts events, in person or online. You will learn a lot.

In this episode, we’re going to cover:

  • What is long-form content
  • Why long-form content matters
  • Choosing the right format of long-form content for you
  • Creating a long-form content plan

  • And more

23 May 2023177: How to Build a Regenerative Business with Helen Tremethick01:14:30

One of my favorite things to do on this podcast is to share an idea or concept that is new to me and that I am so excited about. This is one of those episodes!

Today we’re talking about regenerative business. Wondering what that is? I was too until I had this conversation with Helen but it’s safe to say I’ve become a believer that this is an idea we can ALL embrace

My guest for today’s show is Helen Tremethick. Helen Tremethick is a Regenerative Business Designer & Holistic Business Coach for entrepreneurs who are ready to show up more fully (and authentically) in their lives and their businesses.

06 Jun 2023179: Thriving as an Introvert in Business with Tara Reid01:12:24

When the words ‘entrepreneur’ or ‘business person’ come to mind, who do you imagine? Often, we are told that people in business have the most outgoing, loudest voices in the room. My guest today, Tara Reid, is here to tell you that there is very much a place for introverts in the business world, and if you identify as one, you don't have to change a thing. As an introvert myself, there were so many moments in this conversation that resonated with me. If this sounds like you too, get ready for some major “ah-ha!” moments. Don’t think of yourself as an introvert? There are plenty of valuable nuggets in here for everyone.

We also discussed  one of Kate’s big interests: productivity and time management! She shared some great tips for managing tasks and projects that I know will be super helpful to you. Kate has been my #1 supporter in my business in just about every way you can imagine, some of which you’ll hear about in this podcast.

16 Jun 2023181: Making Good Book Club #19: Traction01:22:00

Today we are back with this month’s edition of Making Good Book Club, and we’re talking about Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business by Gino Wickman.

Traction is all about how we can best organize our businesses to set ourselves and our teams up for success. The book walks through six key components of a business and dives into how each one can be made more streamlined, and more effective.

You guys, this is SUCH a Charelle book, lighting up and inspiring her not-so-hidden inner business organization nerd. Even if you’re a team of one, we both thought there were so many valuable nuggets in this book for any business owner, especially if you may want to build a team down the line. If you’re anything like me, you MIGHT find this book a little dry, but it is absolutely worth a read.

28 Jun 2023183: Principles of Imperfectionism [Permission to Do It Badly]00:47:47

Today’s episode is about something that is so, so, SO important – a concept that has changed my life and that I wish I’d put into practice so much earlier than I did.

And that concept is what I call IMPERFECTIONISM. In other words, the willingness to do things imperfectly.

Because of perfectionism, I’ve spent a lot of my life holding back. Not putting things out into the world, not sharing my work, not showing up.

But. Here’s the thing:

The only way to get better at something… in other words, to get closer to “perfect”... is to do the thing imperfectly.

I am THRILLED to share this episode because today’s topic is a Making Good first!

Many listeners of the show may know that online education, along with this podcast and other resources, is a large part of how I educate small business owners about marketing. That’s why I was so excited for Melissa Guller to come on the show to explain how YOU (yes, you – even if you don’t think it’s right for YOUR BUSINESS) can diversify your income with online courses.

Melissa is the founder of Wit & Wire, where she helps creators build profitable online businesses so they can scale their income and impact online. She also hosts the Wit & Wire podcast and co-hosts the Everything is Teachable and Book Smart podcasts. Before becoming a solopreneur, Melissa was part of teams at course creation platforms like Teachable and General Assembly.

It might come as a surprise that we haven’t spent much time talking about website optimization on this show yet. Trust me, when I realized that was the case, I was just as shocked. After all your website, as today’s guest called it, is “your business's home on the internet.” So of COURSE, in addition to it reflecting your brand and personality, we want it optimized for your business’s goals.

Elissa Voris joined me on the show to break it all down for us. Elissa is the founder of Elissa Mae Creative, a branding and website design studio specializing in lifestyle and beauty brands. With her 20 years of experience in web design, product design, and more, Elissa knows not only what makes a website beautiful, but how to make it an efficient tool for your business.

I’ve noticed something about this podcast, and specifically about you, dear listener.

And that’s this: You tend to be something like me. The things that I’ve struggled with, so so so often they are things that you struggle with too.

Things like self-doubt. Perfectionism. Consistency.

And, as we’re talking about today – procrastination.

The more I reflect on the topic of procrastination and its role in my own life – which, spoiler alert – has been huge. The more I realize that it’s such an important topic.

08 Aug 2023190: 4 Essential Stories with Ché Elizaga Castro01:13:43

I just have to say I really loved my conversation with today’s guest.

On Making Good, we have talked quite a bit about transparency, authenticity, and sharing your story. But storytelling can feel like a huge task, and getting it right can seem intimidating. My guest today, Ché Elizaga Castro, demystifies what it means to share your story as a business owner, and does an amazing job breaking it down into clear, bite-sized pieces.

Ché is the founder of Come Alive Co., where she works with entrepreneurs on their brand story strategy, copywriting, and connection with other impact-driven leaders. Her purpose, in her own words, is “to help women feel known, seen, and worthy of their wildest ideas.” She does this by helping people step into their story so they can approach their marketing with confidence.

Ché’s passion for what she does is truly infectious, and I’m so grateful for how generously she shared her wisdom. This episode is an absolute goldmine.

15 Aug 2023191: Making Good Book Club: Company of One01:19:37

If you’re someone who is considering the future of your small business, this book is worth a read. In it, author Paul Jarvis makes the, (I would say very strong), case for why keeping your business small is the best plan, rather than aiming for growth just for growth’s sake.

It should come as no surprise that Charelle and I are very on board with this perspective. There was a lot of head-nodding as we read through Company of One. In addition to outlining the reasons for keeping a business small, Paul Jarvis offers some excellent advice about keeping your small business chugging even with a tiny (or non-existent) team, and without burning out.

I really loved digesting some of the ideas in this book with Charelle. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

22 Aug 2023192: Analytics Without Overwhelm with Aby Blum Sudds01:02:00

Repeat after me, “Google Analytics.”

How does that phrase make you feel? If ‘intimidated,’ comes to mind, you are definitely not alone. Today’s guest is here to tell you that actually, not only is google analytics, or data analytics in general, not scary, but it can be an essential tool in your small business toolkit. Would you believe me if I said having a handle on your data can even be a stress reliever?

Aby Blum Sudds offers online business management services & products for visionary entrepreneurs who don’t want to stress over the details. She primarily works with folks whose life circumstances, like chronic illness or neurodivergence, mean they need their businesses to work for them in specific ways. To Aby, understanding and utilizing your data is one way to make life easier, and it can even relieve some of the self-doubt and imposter syndrome that can arise for business owners just starting out.

I loved talking with Aby, and learned so so much. No matter what life circumstance you find yourself in as a small business owner, there is so much gold to take away from this conversation.

15 Sep 2023196: Making Good Book Club: The 12 Week Year00:53:34

It seems like I’ve been saying this a lot lately, but this is truly the most Charelle of books.

So much so that the whole second half of our conversation was essentially a clinic on how to incorporate the methods laid out in The 12 Week Year into your own life and business. One of the reasons I was excited to dig into this book with Charelle is because since she read it many years ago, she has baked it’s methods into so many aspects of her own life and business. She also uses it in her work with her clients, supporting their goals and growth using The 12 Week Year as a general framework. Needless to say, I had a blast picking Charelle’s brain.

The 12 Week year is all about planning, taking action, and ultimately getting more out of our time, and I mean, who can argue with that?

You have a superpower. Specifically, a marketing superpower.

And I know that probably, we’ve never even met, but I can tell you this with 100 percent certainty. And it gets better! This superpower doesn’t cost you anything. It doesn’t require you to pick up any new skills. It’s something you have access to ALL of the time and you can activate at any time.

This superpower is something that can help you connect with your ideal customers, grow your audience, build relationships and trust, make sales, and do so many of the other amazing things that marketing can do for our small businesses.

In today’s episode, we’re going to talk all about that marketing superpower: what it is, why it’s so powerful, and I’m going to give you some concrete strategies for putting it into action.

26 Sep 2023198: Sleaze-free Selling with Megan Smyth00:39:41

If you’re like most listeners of this podcast, you first started your business not because you’re an experienced business person… but because you have something you love to do, or you care about, and you decided to make it your full-time gig.

And then, you find yourself in the situation we all find ourselves in as small business owners, which is that we have to sell our thing. Our product, our service, our offer. Whatever it is, it’s only a business if we’re selling it… and for most businesses, selling is an active process. We can’t just wait for sales to come in – we need to set our sales and marketing processes up so that those sales actually happen.

This is for many of us quite uncomfortable. But it doesn’t have to be, and that’s where today’s episode comes in. We’re talking all about selling – and specifically – sleaze-free selling. Selling in a way that feels good and aligned.

And I have a guest today! Her name is Megan Smyth. Megan is a sales copywriter and consultant for mission-driven entrepreneurs. Through her in-depth research process, personality-filled copy, and pull-no-punches consulting, she helps purpose-driven founders drive revenue and make a positive impact–without unethical business practices or sleazy sales tactics.

03 Oct 2023199: How to (Actually) Get Stuff Done00:23:40

Today is an important episode, because it’s about one of the most important topics we could ever cover here.

Getting stuff done.

After all, we can have all the big bright ideas in the world, but if we’re not executing on them, it doesn’t really matter. Our ideas can’t change our lives and change the world if we don’t take action to make them a reality.

But. How do we ACTUALLY get stuff done?

In today’s episode, I share some tips and strategies that I’ve picked up in my own journey with productivity. These are techniques that are really working for me lately, and I hope you find them useful too.

11 Oct 2023200: 10 Things I’ve Learned in 200 Episodes of Making Good00:17:26

HOLY MOLY. TWO HUNDRED EPISODES!

I started this podcast in May of 2020, needing something to be excited about in the pandemic.

I don’t think I would have EVER been able to dream up all of the things that this podcast has brought me.

In the last 3 years, we’ve done 200 episodes. We’ve reached nearly 150,000 downloads. The podcast has led to my favorite place on the internet, my membership program Making Good Happen. Interviewing guests and connecting with all of you has led me to build relationships and friendships that are some of my most treasured.

This podcast has required a lot of me – time, energy, effort – even when I sometimes didn’t feel like I had it. But its given me so much more.

And probably the most powerful thing that this podcast has given me is WISDOM! I’ve learned so, so, so much from hosting this podcast.

So, today… we’re rounding up 10 things that I’ve learned from 200 episodes of Making Good. Truly – I probably could have come up with 200, but hey – I'd rather skip to the biggest and best.

15 Oct 2023201: Making Good Book Club #23: Stories That Stick00:55:08

I’ve got to say, Charelle and I really enjoyed chatting about this one.

As a book about storytelling, it should come as no surprise that in addition to laying out really helpful ideas and frameworks, Stories That Stick was super well-written and fun to read.

This book is chock full of examples, questions, and prompts to get your wheels spinning. If you are someone who feels you don’t have anything to say, or that your story isn’t worth telling, by the time you finish Stories That Stick you will have stories in spades. Even though I’m someone who has always been interested in narrative and has found a lot of success in sharing stories with my audience, reading these prompts sent little sparks of inspiration shooting through my mind. Luckily, author Kindra Hall walks you through how to sift through your newfound pile of stories and choose which to tell and how.

Stories That Stick was a joy to read and talk through with Charelle, and I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

My passion for this probably comes as no surprise, given the titles of my podcast and of my membership program, Making Good and Making Good Happen. Many if not most of this show’s listeners are, or want to be, socially conscious entrepreneurs, and it has been such a joy to witness the community forming and growing around this idea. As today’s guest said, it is so vital to surround yourself with peers and fellow business owners who “get it;” who support your business’s mission for good.

To help us think through how to center doing good in our businesses, (hint: there are so, so many ways), Stephanie Malon-Rufi joined me for a fantastic conversation. Stephanie is the owner of Spark Good, where she consults with and coaches socially conscious entrepreneurs. She helps to distill their vision into a focused strategy and action plan, helps solve key challenges with mindset blocks, and helps them have a greater positive social impact with their business.

It was so much fun to get to talk with someone else in the social entrepreneurship space, I learned a lot from my chat with Stephanie. No matter where your business is in its journey for good, I know you will get a lot out of this conversation.

Small businesses are so powerful and make such amazing impacts on the communities around them — especially when they get the support they need. To illustrate this, I was joined by Ibrahima Souare from NYPACE, an incredible organization that mentors entrepreneurs, as well as Tamekia Flowers-Ball of Epiphany Blue, business owner/mentee who participated in NYPACE's program.

In this episode, we discussed:

  • NYPACE’s mission
  • Tamekia’s  experience at NYPACE with her business, Epiphany Blue
  • How NYPACE continues supporting the small businesses that complete their program
  • Qualities of the most successful small business owners and entrepreneurs
  • The ripple effects of small business entrepreneurs’ success
  • Who would be a good candidate to work with NYPACE
  • And more
