31 Jul 2020On The Line #11: Mary Akemon00:17:49

Escaping Florida with Mary Akemon, political operative.

"On The Line" is a series of quickly-recorded and only lightly-edited phone conversations with artists, professionals, and other people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and other associated disasters. We had a variety of audio issues during the recording this episode--part of what prompted me to shift to Zoom for a while--so please bear with it.

21 Jun 201612. Technology (Mary Akemon, Max Wallace)00:37:11

I'd have called this episode DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN if the title hadn't already been taken. Technology! Change! Growing up! It's all covered in today's episode. We talk to Jon Pernisek about food podcasts that don't exist, and to Mary Akemon about an ethnography of YouTube. We talk digital transition with Max Wallace, and white noise mashups with Christy Little. Along the way, Zac accidentally drives around for a week with a car full of scrap metal, aimlessly pokes around his DVD cabinet looking for meaning, and goes to funerals!

THANK YOU all for listening, and for the kind words some of you send my way. It is the best thing. It makes me very happy. More episodes are coming soon, though probably not next week! XOXO -ZL

On today's episode: an interview with the actor/director/stage manager Robin Fowler (@robinfowler12 on instagram), in a crowded cafe, which is suddenly a very antiquated practice. What does COVID-19 mean for this show, and my recently re-assembled sense of creative self?

Other topic include:

-Michael Pollan's show "Cooked"

-Black Mirror's "Bandersnatch"

-Paul Rust's bass guitar skillz

-Mac Miller (again)

-Cover songs they like

-Why it's OK to not know a song is cover

-Oboards, the Conor Oberst Reddit Board

-James Gunn

-What makes a song good for jamming

-Why "City Morgan" no longer wishes to "f**k" people

-Why Louis CK doesn't deserve another shot

-The Other Morgan Little

-How much it still sucks that Elliott Smith is dead

-A lot of stuff about drums and drummers

-Pedro The Lion's famous bassist

(Apologies to Mary Akemon, who we will hear from in the next few weeks instead.) If you like this show, one way to support it is to buy something on zacharylittle.bandcamp.com, like the Pinch Hill Orchestra's new EP, which costs 1 dollar. Hey gang -- I wanted to re-post this episode because it was a little too loud as originally uploaded, causing the audio to click rather annoyingly in some speakers/headphones. I don't know if anyone noticed other than me, but I will feel better having corrected this. OK, new episode soon! Bye!

Today's episode is about the power of theater.

08 Feb 20164. Fear And Loathing In Manch Vegas00:39:44

Today is Primary Day in New Hampshire, so it's time we talk about politics. First, Zac and Chelsea spend a little time talking about why politics and creativity make such an awkward creative fit for overly self-aware 28-year-olds. Later, Zac and Dan journey to ABC's Democratic Presidential Debate, where Zac talks to protestors, supporters, and reticent campaign staffers. Then, Zac, Dan, and Ian witness the icy wonders of the media filing room, and throw themselves into the Spin Room with the energy of a Martin O'Malley supporter.

Today's episode features the voices of Zac Little, Chelsea Fisher, Dan Freund, Ian Servin, many protestors and rally-goers, Hillary Clinton, Martin O'Malley, David Muir, Bernie Sanders, George Stephanopoulos, several campaign surrogates for the now-defunct Martin O'Malley campaign, Robby Mook, Barney Frank, Jeanne Shaheen, and Steven DiSalvo, president of St. Anselm college.  I think that's all.

It also features music from The Mild Revolution--whose "7 For 7" series is currently underway. Seven free songs over seven days! Follow them on Twitter @mildrevolution

22 Nov 201619. Film Festival, pt. 2 (Shirley Abraham, Rae Dawn Chong)00:39:54

In today's episode, we talk about the some of the feature-length narrative films and documentaries we saw at the festival, and also chat about like, the overall vibe. Movies discussed at relative length include THE ARCHITECT, MA, THE EYES OF MY MOTHER, WIENER DOG, THE CINEMA TRAVELERS, and A WOMAN, A PART. We talk with festival goers and friends, actress Rae Dawn Chong (Jeff, Who Lives At Home), and the co-director of the excellent THE CINEMA TRAVELERS, Shirley Abraham. This episode features music by Zac and Christy Little, as well as Desparecidos and Fiona Apple.

That's going to be the end of Season 2, folks. Thanks so much for all of your emotional and financial support. We have a lot of really awesome ideas for new episodes but it's going to take a while to put them together. I hope to have at least one more little thing before the end of the year, though.

I don't want to put the list of songs or a playlist in the video info yet because I think it's fun to listen along. But if you look back at this podcast in a couple of days I will edit this description to include one.

Thanks for listening!

22 Feb 20166. Podcasts (Jon Pernisek, Morgan Little)00:34:50

"Oh god, are we going meta already?" - You.

Only a little. Don't worry.

Today on TLP, we talk about podcasts, and creativity, and the struggle to feel as though your art is worthwhile and has a place that makes sense in the context of history. Kinda heavy, right? There are jokes and stuff, too. But I have no illusions about the audience of this podcast. You are mostly creative people, and you understand creative struggles, and I hope that some of this is not only helpful to you but also can be maybe part of a longer conversation, facilitated by this podcast, as we proceed and go further and further up our own butts.

A person with whom I have vented about creative struggles for years is the talented and generous Jonathon Pernisek, and he is our guest for the majority of today's episode. I have a lot more stuff recorded with him, and probably will want to talk to him again soon anyway, so expect to hear more from him. And if you live in Chicago, go to his live show this Saturday! Tell him old Zacky sent you!

I'm writing a lot for someone who only has one good eye right now, so I'll say goodbye for now. XOXO.

Today's episode features the voices of David Connerley Nahm, Russ Grazier, Christy Little, and David Murphy.

In today's episode, Zac moves a mattress.

Also, he talks to Russ Grazier about David Bowie's relationship to jazz, and to David Connerley Nahm about naming characters in novels and his time working with the band Sorry About Dresden.

Also, the whole thing is a prolonged exploration of the name David, and an awards ceremony for The Hall Of Davids, which is an award/psychic shrine to people named David all over the world.

Thanks to Russ, who is @rgrazier on twitter, and David Nahm, who is @DCNahm. David's novel, Ancient Oceans Of Central Kentucky, is on sale from Two Dollar Radio. Here's NPR's Review: http://www.npr.org/2014/08/20/339609587/the-depths-of-memory-and-pain-in-ancient-oceans

13 Jun 2017Are Ye Talkin' Arcade Fire In June?01:45:12

The boys are back to discuss Arcade Fire's double album REFLEKTOR, as well as to discuss the prospects of EVERYTHING NOW, Arcade Fire's recently-announced forthcoming record.

Zac is in full-on Honeymoon mode with everybody's favorite Indie Arena Rock Band, but Morgan has since soured on The Suburbs.

Along the way, they check in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, discuss San Fermin's "Belong," contemplate the whole concept of Gorillaz, worry about the futures of Death Cab for Cutie and Vampire Weekend, and go pretty deep into the Orpheus myth -- especially the part where he dies from getting fucked to death.

This episode is not sponsored by Blue Apron, Casper Mattresses, and Bonobos.

Thanks to Scott and Scott, as always.

Today's episode features the voices of: MICHAEL STASIUK, RUSS GRAZIER, YAARA BEN DOR, and CHRISTY LITTLE.

It features music from the PMAC TEEN JAZZ ENSEMBLE.

Hi! Season three is finally starting! Thanks for sticking around. Today, we talk to the artist Michael Stasiuk in a conversation that was adapted from a talk he gave in December titled "Process & Inspiriation." We also talk to the director of the Portsmouth Music And Art Center, Russ Grazier, about what the school does and how he goes about arranging a jazz number. Finally, we talk to Yaara Ben Dor about her work as a Preservation Assistant and the strange way her work intersects with her past.

I'll be posting some relevant images on zaclittle.tumblr.com today, but here are some other links:

Today's episode features a lot of voices, but mostly mine. It's a story about what has been going on for pretty much the entire time I've been working on and releasing this podcast. In my mind, the unspoken star of the episode is our in-house organist, Morgan Little, who really tied this episode together. Special thanks to him, and to you, for sticking with this show for eight weeks. I'm really not used to working in such a long format with such regularity, and I hope you have enjoyed it so far. Have a good day. -ZL

14 May 201939. A Deeper Understanding00:45:16

Today's ep is a direct sequel to the last one, "Systemic Understanding." We talk to Sarah Wrightsman, the Executive Director of the Workforce Housing Coalition of the Greater Seacoast. We also talk to Steven Hedlund and Becky Holt of the Global Aquaculture Alliance, and check back in with Elena Piekut, assistant city planner in NH's only city doing anything right, Dover NH.

We cover a lot of ground in this one, but really, it's about one question: how do you know that what you're doing is working?

Shoutout to my pal Fred Balas, who tipped me off to Sarah's many acronyms.

04 Oct 201617. (Non?)Fiction00:31:44

The last few episodes have had a lot of conversation and not a lot of solo Zac chatter. This episode is the opposite of that. It's kind of just one big closing monologue for this current batch of episodes, a.k.a Season 2.5. It covers a lot of ground, including:

Mad Men, David Rees, Experimental French writers, books about 90s screenwriters, the internet, videogames, knowing someone versus understanding them, Chopped, Roald Dahl, and more.

It features music from Cat Power, Devendra Banhart and Drake, as well as a clip from The West Wing Weekly which itself includes a clip from The West Wing [Inception horn noise]. It features the voices of Max Wallace and Jake McKay.

Come back next week for a two-hour episode of "Are Ye Talkin' Arcade Fire In May?"

In today's ep, we talk about weddings, and linguistic trends among the clergy. Then, we talk about a different sort of marriage: the marriage between still images (made possible by persistence of vision theory) known as MOVIES. Feature Film! Cinema! Old Tinseltoes! Is that a thing?

First off, Zac and Christy share theories in some field recordings from the New Hampshire Film Festival. Next, Zac has a lengthy chat with Paul Neafcy, author and videomaker.

Hey if you ever feel so inclined, you can now support the podcast w/ a donation at http://paypal.me/makeamixtape

One time I started writing a poem called DON DRAPER SELLS ME A USED CAR, which I never finished but here's what I got:

DON DRAPER SELLS ME A USED CAR

Don Draper slurred at us in a precovid conference room:

You must remember this.

For a moment we believed in the promise of a past we could trust, could hold aside, preserved.

I think all my earliest memories were actually home video

(You must remember this)

Recorded, and played back, ceaselessly against the past

So I picked up a camera and got in the business

of making false memories.

The old ones I once believed in are gone now

Dissolved on magnetic tape.

Teddy told me that "lacuna" means a hole in the bone

We use it to refer to a gap in the fossil record.

We assume it is there, though.

It has to be.

15 Nov 201618. Film Festival, pt. 1 (Christy Little, Josh Peterson)00:41:27

The New Hampshire Film Festival took place in October, and The Last Podcast team (me and Christy--Shosh was with her grandparents) was there to capture it all. This episode features conversations with festival-goers and filmmakers and was recorded entirely October 13-16.

We discuss a lot of short films in this episode, and you don't need to have seen them to follow along--most of what we talk about pertains to filmmaking in general, and the examples don't really matter. But we have a long chat with the director Josh Peterson, and you can view the trailer for his film Forest Born here: https://vimeo.com/135806197

Other films we touch on include:

Crest Of The Hill, which you can watch in full here: http://livingwithalz.org/user_submitted_film/crest-of-the-hill/

Confessions Of A Cannabis Consultant--teaser here: http://markdugas.com/cannabis_consultant/

I'll try to post a complete guide to the episode at zaclittle.tumblr.com

We also discuss Food Fight and Peter And The Farm--two feature length documentaries. Peter And The Farm is available on VOD now.

This episode features music by me and Christy, and also a little from Joanna Newsom, and features the voices of a lot of people, including our old friend Dan Freund and the director Shirley Abraham, who we will hear more from next week.

Plus we'll talk about this f*****g election, and where the podcast goes from here.

Today, Morgan and Zac do a deep dive on their own record, RELATIVE ISOLATION, which you can hear wherever music is streamed. I hope this episode will be, primarily, just a fun listening experience to end the year (or begin the new one) but secondarily I hope it's something that helps other creative people in some way. I love hearing about process -- it always provides me with a jumping-off point for my own creative processes -- and obviously I hope you do too, since this is literally just 90 minutes of our chaotic and fun recording process.

09 May 201724. Spring Cleaning (Remix)00:54:13

Good morning!

Today's episode is a little bit of something old, a little bit of something new. We talk to TIFFANY PUZA, General Manager of Operations for BAD LAB BEER CO. Then, Zac and MAX WALLACE talk about the modern security state. Plus, in a re-edited re-broadcast of episode 7, "Spring Cleaning," we hear from PAUL NEAFCY and JON PERNISEK while Zac and DAN FREUND travel to the Republican Presidential Debate. All that time travel is a lot to handle, so at the end, present-day Zac talks a little bit about personality types and gender roles. This episode is sponsored by Audible. Just kidding. Read a real book, you jerks!

Quick note on spoilers! While we do talk about a bunch of TV shows, movies, and books in this episode, nothing in particular is really spoiled about ANY of them — sensitivity to spoilers—and where Zac P. and I have fairly different and yet complimentary philosophies about them —  in fact being a major topic of reflection here.

The only movie that I would say is significantly spoiled is The Fugitive, starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones, the 1993 film. And we don’t talk about that until the very end of the episode, so like, if its on your list on Max and you haven’t quite gotten to it — first of all I totally get it —just jump off the episode when you get there.

Songs in this episode:

  • Crown on the Ground, Sleigh Bells
  • Stay Down Man, Dan Reeder
  • Stay Down Man, boygenius
  • Various bits from the Succession and Station Eleven scores
  • I’m Not Part of Me, Cloud Nothings
  • Mashup of Time After Time, Cindy Lauper / Demon Time, Lil Yachty
  • Mashup of Wayside/Back in Time, Gillian Welch, Lifetime Income, Larry June

21 Apr 2021Are You Snydering My Cut To Me?01:09:11

Who is the power broker? What's a contessa? Who is that guy who played Dr. Manhattan who is also in Spotlight? Isn't Spotlight a great movie? How is the Snyder Cut real? These questions and many more are asked if not answered in today's pod, which is part two of our fast and loose series which is technically a recap show about Marvel's THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER -- this week's episode also includes a long discussion about Zack Snyder's Justice League, possible plotlines for Black Panther 2, and a summary of the comic book series Flashpoint. I recorded most of this episode sitting in my backyard, which is why you can hear so many birds.

Intro music: "Major Leagues," Pavement

Outro music: "Flash Delirium," MGMT
