On episode 9, I had a conversation with one of my grad school cohorts Josh Mantz about his book The Beauty of a Darker Soul: Overcoming Trauma Through the Power of Human Connection. Josh is a former army major who was shot and killed by a sniper and flatlined for fifteen minutes, and was brought back to life. Four months later he was back on deployment, and a year and half later he was on a national public speaking circuit and was able to leverage his story as part of a military initiative to empower others to access mental/behavioral health treatment. The years following his death/rebirth, or his "second life", presented Josh with emotional challenges that led him to write this book dealing with themes of shame and trauma. She recently received a PhD in Philosophy and Religion at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and her dissertation is titled The Back of Beyond: The Red Books of C.G. Jung and J.R.R. Tolkien. She is a deeply imaginative intellectual and a talented astrologer. When we had this conversation I honestly felt like a portal to another universe opened up! In this episode we talked about the nature of archetypes, the current Saturn-Pluto conjunction and how we’ve been seeing that manifest, the planetary combinations of Venus through the pairings she makes with the Sun, Moon, Mercury, and so on all the way out to Pluto, and then at the end we wrapped back around to Saturn and Pluto by talking about the triple combination of Venus, Saturn, and Pluto (listen to part 2 of this episode for that). We may know that eclipses are special New and Full Moons, but what sets them apart? On episode 22: Alongside my spiritual and astrological path, my relationship with so many things in this life has changed, including the daily intimate activity of eating. I've had a journey that's led me to clean eating and eating a vegan, plant-based diet (I do eat honey and bee pollen 🍯🐝) and I share what that's looked like and some thoughts on the importance of approaching a healthy lifestyle from a place of joy and self-love. Now as an astrologer practicing Pluto-centered astrology I spend so much time with Pluto that this conversation had a way of supercharging me and I trust will also be soul food for thought for you as well. On episode 26: Do you feel like you’ve been here before, in another life? And if so… what does that say about the meaning of this current life? I reached out to one of my biggest intellectual influences on karma and reincarnation, Chris M. Bache, to invite him onto the show to explore these ideas further. His book Lifecycles: Reincarnation and the Web of Life has been an essential to me! We discuss in this episode some principles of karma and reincarnation and then what this suggests about the collective process here on earth as a whole. Chris is a professor who has taught and written about reincarnation and karma - he is now 70 years old and threw himself into and studied himself out of religion before his first Saturn return (which as you may know is around 29 years of age), and then encountered academic information about reincarnation at his Saturn return and this became a fruitful path of research and writing for Chris from that point onward. Over 40 years of study, work and integration of these themes leads to his latest forthcoming book “LSD and the Mind of the Universe: Diamonds from Heaven” in which he shares his vision of the collective process of evolution at play where we are not reincarnating to eventually become ascended and leave the earth but to be fully awakened here on earth, in space and time. On episode 50, I’m excited to bring you a conversation I had several weeks ago about the astrological centaurs with an evolutionary astrologer who specializes with the centaurs, David Leskowitz. We discussed Chiron, Pholus, Chariklo and Okyrhoe. Chiron is the most well-known of these, but even so it’s worth exploring Chiron deeper than the keyword “wounded healer” - what does that really mean? I had a fascinating conversation with fellow astrologer Nate Speare about performance, and performance’s connections to psychological/emotional range, magic, and charisma. I wanted to talk to Nate because when I see his astrology updates on social media, they are transmission-like, where he uses different sounds, and voices, and theatric elements essentially, to convey the feeling tone of the transits he is describing. I felt that there was probably something really interesting and thoughtful behind that process and how he developed that theatric vocabulary, and I wasn’t wrong :) Nate Speare is an astrologer, vocal artist, storyteller, mythologist, and educator. He comes from a line of astrologers and sound/music composers who used natural environmental sounds and the connection between sound, the natural environment, and the characters within the earth and sky.
