NASA Flight Engineer, José Hernández, who served aboard the International Space Station, is here to share his remarkable personal story that took him from his migrant farmworking childhood to outer space. Along the way he acquired advanced engineering degrees, learned the Russian language, took flight lessons and became a certified SCUBA diver... all with the unwavering support of his parents, loving wife, and extended family.  He's also a pioneer in the digital mamography field and his contributions have saved countless lives.

My heart be still! Talking with me today is one of America's most endearing heart-throbs. Harry Connick, Jr. is dialin' in to share the amazing journey he's recently taken with his film-maker daughter, Georgia.

Traveling over 3500 miles in a rented RV, this dynamic duo set out from their home in Connecticut stopping in numerous cities and towns along the route to listen to the stories of essential workers - the janitorial staff and garbage collectors, grocery and gas station attendants, truckers, food preparers, and more. They listened, they learned, and many celebrity friends "Zoomed" in too, giving their heartfelt thanks to these heroes who represent the heartbeat of America.

With a television crew following and filming (while practicing safe distancing and mask-wearing) the Connick's incredible journey came to an end in New Orleans. The footage captured became the CBS special "United We Sing: A Grammy Salute To The Unsung Heroes" which can now be seen on CBS All-Access, and Harry's new single "Stars Still Shine" can be downloaded where ever you get your music. There's a wonderful organization in the Chicago area called Santa's Volunteers, who generously enable hundred of families (nearly 1000!) to celebrate the holidays with food, gifts, and the basic necessities of a cold mid-western winter. John Churchill is the chairman of the board, and he met with me at the Museum of Radio Broadcasting to tell me all about this amazing group of glad tidings. Another guy dropped in also - he was wearing a fuzzy red suit, trimmed in fur. He had a snowy white beard, rosy red cheeks, eyes that twinkled, and lots of ho ho holiday spirit! 4 of my kids joined us too - won't you? Wow. Just wow. What a phenomenal human is Tim Tebow! He stepped onto a football field and stole our hearts several years ago, and continues to hold them in his strong, capable hands! Football star, baseball star, founder of the Night To Shine Foundation, and now teaming up with his brother Robby as executive producers of the movie, "Run The Race."

I ran into Tim while we were both in New York, he promoting "Run The Race", and me talking about my book, One Heart At A Time.  He graciously sat down with me behind some pipe and drape to have a genuine heart to heart chat about what love really is. My favorite quote from the conversation, "The greatest form of love is to chose the best interest of another person and act on their behalf." Amen

The novel coronavirus pandemic brought confusion and frustration to the world. The question, "What do we do now" echoed around the globe. Jon Bon Jovi answered that question, in action, word, and song. "When you can't do what you do, do what you can." was the caption to an instagram shot of him washing dishes at JB's Soul Kitchen, a community restaurant where "all are welcome, and locally-sourced ingredients, dignity, and respect are always on the menu." Those words became the chorus to another Bon Jovi anthem, one that is sorely needed right now, providing purpose and passion at a time of great need.

Jon joins me today to talk about the single, "Do What You Can", and his upcoming album, "Bon Jovi 2020" set for an October release. The band decided not to just postpone their world tour, but to cancel it altogether and refund ticket purchases, because, as he said, "People need money in their pockets right now." What a delightful conversation Luke Smallbone and I had today! This charming half of the musical duo, for KING & COUNTRY is sharing some inside info on the movie, UNSUNG HERO, out now, about his musical family and their decision to move from Australia to the US on little more than a wing and a prayer.

Life was challenging for the Smallbone's and their 7 children, but a mother's love and strong faith carried them through the storms, helping them to find the joy, and the immense talent, within.

One late evening, while indulging in my favorite insomniac habit of watching documentaries, I stumbled upon Angela Tucker's CLOSURE.  This film, created by Angela's husband on a flip-phone, was only meant for her at the time of it's making.

It's the step-by-step journey she went on to find her birth parents and something of herself she felt was missing. Angela, a bright, beautiful black woman was raised by strong, loving white parents in a predominantly white community. They gave her a loving foundation, a family, and a future, but her features did not match theirs - those of us who have no experience with this may not understand how difficult that can be for a child to process.

Angela found her birth family and discovered many things about herself along the way. She also found her life's work created from a passion to help and support others on similar quests; sharing CLOSURE is one way of doing so.  Angela is among those warriors helping to make the world a better place, One Heart at a Time! Happy Mother's Day! To all of you who have been a mother; a birth mother, a step mother, an adoptive mother, a grandmother, a mothering aunt, a single dad that must carry both loads... I want to honor and thank you for a sometimes thankless job. 

Mother's are our unsung heroes, the givers of life, the ones who teach, who love, who sacrifice. Those who forgive the sometimes unforgivable, the supporters, the nurturers... The ones who care, always.

Nobody, but nobody, does Christmas like Michael Bublé does Christmas!

This year he's gifted us with a beautiful new single, "Maybe This Christmas", recorded with Carly Pearce. He calls it "a special song that comes from a deep place" wrapping up his hope, his faith and his humanity, in a prayer for grace for himself and the world. I cried when I heard it. You will too.

Michael took on a new role recently, as a coach on Season 26 of The Voice, and was gushing about it and the friendships he's forged with the other coaches when we sat down to chat. (Soon after our conversation, he became the first coach in the history of the show to have the top two artists on his team on his debut season!) He debuted "Maybe This Christmas" on the season finale, and today I get to share it all with you.

It's made up of some of the most vulnerable, at-risk people in our society. Low pay, long hours, crazy shifts, covered by at-risk teens, single parents, immigrant populations, and those who have served time... Barely living paycheck-to-paycheck with no guaranteed hours or benefits. It's a population plagued by addictions and circumstances beyond the comprehension of most of us who go out to dinner or on a vacation.

Kevin is working to fix this, flipping the script in a completely novel way. He's setting up his BIG TABLE (it's real and seats 48!) in communities like his home town of Spokane, Seattle and San Diego - and hoping to be in 10 cities across the country in 10 years. He serves those who serve us at his pop-up underground restaurant - and in daily conversations over cups of coffee. Like the single with Shoshana Bean, "A Brand New Christmas", from Roku's original movie he stars in, Jingle Bell Love.  He's also starring in an off-broadway musical "DRAG" at New Worlds Stage, and has a full-length LP coming out in the new year. "Freedom" is an album that explores his upbringing and path to pop stardom. The single, "Is Anybody Out There" was released in November! Seven years ago life came crashing into Faith Broussard Cade in the form of a tractor-trailor rig that hit her car from behind. She sustained a concussion and a traumatic brain injury. Unable to return to her career as a school counselor, and struggling in her role as wife and mother, Faith had to figure out how to create a life where her injuries were a part of her story but didn't define her. Frontman for the band bearing his name, DAUGHTRY sang his way to prominence on the fifth season of American Idol. Since then he's released four albums, all of which reached the Billboard Top Ten and have combined sales of over 8 million copies in the U.S. You probably know him for one of his smash singles, "It's Not Over", "Leave This Town", "Break The Spell", or maybe "Waiting For Superman." 

Recently I got to know him for so much more! Chris came to hang out for a day at the farm so he could get the lay of the land before he performs at my annual Farm to Feast garden gala benefitting Point Hope. We had such an amazing time together laughing, talking, and checking in on Zena the zebra, Emmy the Emu, and Peek-A-Boo's new pups. 

His single, "As You Are,"  from the 2018 album, "Cage To Rattle", was written with his wife Deanna; An incredible testimony to unconditional love, it wrecks me, He even put on an impromptu performance for me in the studio, and I'm still a-swoon. Sir Nicholas 'Nicky' Winton was a young London stockbroker who visited Prague in December of 1938 where he discovers a large population of refugees fleeing the Nazis - and he knew he must do something, at least for the children. 

Back in London, Nick spent months arranging for foster families, passports, and documentation that would usher hundreds of children to safety... 669 children! 50 years later his story came to light in a remarkable way. Nick Winton lived his 106 years humbly, with the idea that service to others isn't a calling, it's simply what one does.

Waaaay back in November of 2021 I interviewed a delightful British author/illustrator named Charlie Mackesy. Charlie had written a book that the entire world had fallen in love with; "The Boy, the mole, the fox, and the Horse." Its message was one of hope, compassion, and above all, kindness.

I was so thrilled last month when the animated film - that Charlie was hard at work on when we spoke - took home an Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards. Several million people, myself included, I fell in love with today's podcast guest around the same time - when a poem he wrote and published to his Facebook page went viral. It began, "my brain and heart divorced a decade ago over who was to blame about how big of a mess I have become.."  and we could all relate.

Cathy Parker was a bank employee, a wife, and a mother of 4 student athletes. She didn't have a lot of money, or power, and had ZERO knowledge of artificial athletic turf... but when her children called to her to watch a documentary about a  town in the northern reaches of Alaska, struggling to keep kids safe, engaged, and in school, she took action!

Cathy answered a whisper in her heart, which led to a whole lotta shouting on the sidelines! Her book, "Northern Lights" tells the story of how she was able to get an artificial athletic field, purchased, transported, and installed in a town with no roads in or out. George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley - as WHAM! - set out to conquer the music world in 1982. They were still teenagers! At the tender age of 9, Kelly Rowland formed a musical group with her friends that in a few year would be known the world-over as "Destiny's Child". That was in 1990, and Kelly is all grown up now with a successful solo career in music, fashion, acting, directing/producing, and recently, writing. Her children's book, "Always With You, Always With Me" was just released. 

She's also a loving partner to her husband, a doting mamma of two young boys, and active in numerous causes that aim to make life better for her community and the world. Recently she performed at the American Heart Association's Red Dress Collection Concert. What a privilege! I was invited to the brand new home of the streaming TV series, The Chosen, where I got to tour the set and meet with the creator/director, Dallas Jenkins, and several members of the cast and crew.

After starting out with humble beginnings singing in their father’s church in West Oakland, CA, The Pointer Sisters went on to achieve worldwide success and a place in pop music history.

The eldest sister, and only remaining member of the original group, Ruth Pointer, continues to perform the music of The Pointer Sisters all over the globe with her daughter, Issa Pointer, and granddaughter, Sadako Pointer. What an absolute thrill it was to speak to this talented trailblazer. We laughed so much, especially when she caught me out on an on-air oopsie I made yeeeaaarrrs ago, and Ruth was listening!

Joining me today is a good friend, a career police officer, and the co-founder of an amazing organization called The IF Project; a collaboration of law enforcement, currently and previously incarcerated adults and community partners focused on intervention, prevention and reduction in the number of women incarceration and recidivism.

The project is centered around individuals sharing their personal stories about incarceration. As Kim says, we ALL have stories, the felon, the police, the person you're standing next to. Finding the common denominator in our stories and tapping into the human connection, will help us to figure out the "what IF?" and take the steps necessary to change a life.

Impactful author, Mitch Albom, comes alongside today with some powerful messages of hope and healing. His last two books, "Finding Chika", and, "The Stranger In The Lifeboat", are inexorably tied, the first about the grief of losing his daughter, and the second, about healing. The drifting lifeboat a metaphor for desperation, of crying out to God for help, (and demanding the cry be answered with the swiftness and accuracy of a fast food order).

It's back to school time around the country, so I thought there would be no better way to kick-off September than with an episode honoring educators!

I dialed up a couple of teachers that have had a huge impact on my life; Coach Jim Wells, who was an history teacher and an athletic coach for many many years in my home town of Reesdport, Oregon, and who, with his wife Mary Ann, also a retired teacher, continues to be a vital presence in our community. And Mike Allen, choral director of the high school three of my kids attended. He shares his passion for music with his students by creating some of the MOST AMAZING programs including an annual Madrigal Feaste and Broadway production that give students an opportunity to showcase their creative abilities as well as their musical talents.
