16 Apr 2025 | Strome's Hat Trick and a Strong Defensive Stand Propel Caps Victory Over Islanders | 00:28:52
In the latest episode of Locked On Capitals, the focus was on the Washington Capitals' strong performance against the New York Islanders, where they secured a 3-1 victory at UBS Arena. Key players like Dylan Strome excelled, scoring a hat trick that included a power-play goal and solid contributions throughout the game. Strome's efforts not only marked his career-high 28 goals and 80 points but also helped extend Alex Ovechkin's point streak to eight games. The Capitals needed this win desperately, especially after struggling offensively in their recent outings. Defensively, the Capitals showed resilience with substitutes like Dylan McIlrath and Alex Alexeyev stepping up in the absence of regulars John Carlson and Jakob Chychrun. The defensive unit effectively protected goaltender Charlie Lindgren, who made 34 saves with an impressive .971 save percentage, marking a turnaround in his performance. Overall, this match provided a much-needed boost for the Capitals as they gear up for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, highlighting both individual and team efforts that they hope to build upon in the coming games. 07 May 2024 | If the Hershey Bears win on Wednesday they'll be moving on to the next round. Do they have what it takes? | 00:41:07
On today's show Corey Swartz of HBH nation and Richard Blosser from the grit and bear it podcast join Dan on the show to talk Bears hockey
The Hershey Bears came out strong in game one against the rival Lehigh Valley Phantoms, defeating them by a score of 2-1. Despite being outshot 31-28, the Bears were able to capitalize on their opportunities. Rookie Hendrix Lapierre opened the scoring, assisted by Chase Priskie and Ethen Frank. Henrik Rybinski followed up with a second period goal thanks to helpers from Matt Strome and Bogdan Trineyev. Goaltender Hunter Shepard was the hero, making 30 saves and shutting down the Phantoms' attack. Head coach Todd Nelson acknowledged it was a grind, with the Phantoms giving them all they could handle and the game nearly going to overtime. With key contributors like Riley Sutter and Vinnie Iorio out with injuries, the Bears relied on their depth and experience to slam the door. Young guns Lapierre and Connor McMichael provided a boost upon returning from the Capitals' roster. Looking ahead to Game 2, the Bears will need to bring their best to avoid falling into a 1-1 series tie. They'll need to dictate play early, cash in on scoring chances, and get continued brilliant goaltending from Shepard. The Phantoms will be hungry to even the series on home ice, so the Bears must match their desperation from the opening puck drop. If Hershey brings the same work ethic and capitalizes on opportunities, they should be able to head home up 2-0. But they can't let up for a minute against the always dangerous Phantoms. The latest updates from "Locked On Capitals" provide insight into the Washington Capitals' preparations for their forthcoming games against the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Edmonton Oilers. The team has maintained their line combinations, with a slight shuffle in the bottom-6. Additionally, news about injured players, including Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie, highlights their engagement with the team despite being on long-term injured reserve. In another segment, Tom Wilson expressed his disappointment over missing the 4 Nations Face-Off, reflecting on the intense rivalry between the USA and Canada. He voiced that his presence would have been valuable due to his physical play and skill, which could have shifted the game's dynamics in favor of Team Canada. Meanwhile, Ovechkin's pursuit of the 1,500-game milestone has become uncertain following his recent injury, yet he continues to chase Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal record. 17 Feb 2025 | Four Nations Face-Off Recap, Ovechkin's Miami Vacation, and the Future of Hendrix Lapierre | 00:29:31
In the latest episode of Locked On Capitals, the hosts recap the exciting Four Nations Face-Off, particularly focusing on the match between Team USA and Team Canada. The U.S. triumphed with a 3-1 score, advancing to the championship game while raising questions about Canada’s lack of physicality. Despite having star players like Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby, Canada struggled to compete physically, as they allowed the U.S. to dictate the game's pace. The absence of Tom Wilson from the Capitals was noted as a potential game-changer, highlighting the importance of physical presence in high-stakes matchups. Additionally, the podcast provides updates on Alex Ovechkin, who is enjoying a vacation in Miami and expressing disinterest in the Four Nations Tournament due to the exclusion of the Russian team. Ovechkin, focusing on his recovery from injury, is training while the Capitals lead the Eastern Conference. The discussion also touches on Hendrix Lapierre’s performance and potential trade options as the Capitals prepare for a playoff push. The hosts ponder whether now is the right time to explore trading Lapierre for a player who can contribute immediately to the team’s playoff ambitions. 26 Jan 2024 | Frustration boils over as the Washington Capitals get demolished by the Colorado Avalanche. The team is healthy generally speaking - There are no excuses! | 00:28:46
In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about his frustration with the Caps play as of late. Spencer Carbery and all the players said that these are must win games. We've seen little to no evidence of that as they got demolished by the Avalanche after having the same result the night before in Minnesota. There don't seem to be any clear answers but Dan discusses his thoughts about the state of the Caps. Later he talks about what went wrong in Colorado. The Caps at points even outworked the Avs but their age and slow speed came into focus as the Avs skill and speed were more than the Caps could handle. 15 Jan 2025 | Capitals Shine with Duhaime's Performance, Thompson's Shutout, and Trade Rumors Surrounding Yanni Gourde | 00:30:10
The Washington Capitals delivered an electrifying performance during Caps Canine Night, securing a 3-0 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. This win marked their first back-to-back triumph since late December, fueled by standout contributions from Brandon Duhaime, who had a goal and an assist. The team saw significant offensive improvement, surpassing 20 shots on goal for the first time in three games, largely due to smart adjustments made by the coaching staff. Key players like Pierre-Luc Dubois, Alex Ovechkin, John Carlson, and Ethen Frank also made impactful plays, while Logan Thompson shined in goal, achieving a shutout with 18 saves. As the Capitals continue to build momentum, trade rumors are heating up ahead of the March 7 deadline, with early speculations linking them to Yanni Gourde of the Seattle Kraken. Gourde, who has a solid track record and experience from his time with the Tampa Bay Lightning, could potentially bolster the Caps' depth at center. However, his hefty salary and current injury status are factors the team will need to consider as they evaluate trade options. Overall, the Capitals are looking to maintain their recent success and make strategic moves to enhance their chances for a deep playoff run.

29 Mar 2025 | The Capitals fall to the Wild | Tip of the hat to André Fleury | Trotz on Ovechkin | 00:28:49
In the latest episode of Locked On Capitals, the hosts reflect on the team's recent two-game road trip, highlighting a mix of hope and frustration. In their first match against the Winnipeg Jets, the Capitals demonstrated resilience by tying the game thanks to a goal from Alex Ovechkin, though they ultimately lost 3-2 in overtime. The following game against the Minnesota Wild ended in a disappointment as the Caps couldn't maintain their momentum, suffering a 4-2 defeat despite outplaying the Wild in terms of puck possession and shots. Coach Spencer Carbery acknowledged the team's efforts but stressed the importance of improving their scoring in high-pressure situations, particularly on the power play. In a heartfelt moment post-game, Ovechkin led a handshake line to honor legendary goaltender Marc-André Fleury, who is set to retire at the end of the 2024-25 season. This gesture highlighted the mutual respect between Ovechkin and Fleury, with both players reflecting on their storied rivalry. The episode also touches on the Capitals' playoff aspirations as they’ve secured a spot with 103 points this season, putting Ovechkin in the spotlight as he chases Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record. Coach Barry Trotz shared insights on Ovechkin's competitive spirit, indicating that as the team gears up for the playoffs, they are not just rallying behind Ovi’s quest for more goals but also looking to make a significant impact in the postseason. 05 Nov 2024 | From Milano's Struggles to Capitals' Offensive Surge: Ovechkin, Strome, and Protas Shine in the 2024-25 NHL Season | 00:28:47
Sonny Milano is struggling in his recent performances, evidenced by limited ice time and poor statistical metrics, prompting speculation about a potential stint in the AHL to help him regain his form. Meanwhile, the Washington Capitals are enjoying a strong offensive start to the 2024-25 NHL season, averaging 4.18 goals per game, largely driven by standout performances from veterans Alex Ovechkin and Dylan Strome, who have accumulated significant points together. Ovechkin is showing signs of resurgence, potentially threatening Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record, while Strome is on track for a career year. Aliaksei Protas is also emerging as a key contributor, and Trevor van Riemsdyk has stepped up in a larger role due to an injury to Jakub Chychrun. Overall, the Capitals have improved their ability to maintain leads but face challenges in closing out games, particularly in recent matchups. 22 May 2024 | Charlie Lindgren and Team USA's Victory, Strome's role on the Caps last season, and Frank's Playoff Heroics | 00:25:50
Charlie Lindgren and Ryan Leonard helped Team USA secure a spot in the next round with a 6-3 victory over Latvia. Lindgren made his debut in this game, replacing an injured player and stopping 27 of 30 shots. Despite a strong push from Latvia in the third period, Lindgren remained composed and played a key role in the team's success. His impressive season with the Capitals underscores his valuable contribution to the team. Dylan Strome, with a five-year contract extension with the Washington Capitals, has delivered strong performances, particularly in the latter part of the season. He aims to continue improving and contributing to the team's success. Ethen Frank, right wing for the Hershey Bears, has turned his fortunes around, scoring in three consecutive games and making history by becoming the first Hershey player in 50 years to score three consecutive game-winning goals in the playoffs. His success has been evident both at five-on-five and on the power play. 03 May 2024 | The state of the Capitals with Brian Maclellan from his season ending press conference | 00:27:55
The playoffs were a tough ending to an up and down season for the Capitals. After being eliminated in just four games, it was disappointing but good to see the young guys like McMichael and Lapierre step up and play well under the high pressure of the postseason. This team exceeded expectations considering the roster turnover from the start of the season, evolving in a way we couldn't have anticipated. But in the end, it presented an opportunity for the next generation of Capitals to gain valuable experience. The status of veterans like Oshie remains unclear, as his back problems may force him to reconsider returning. He's been a core leader on and off the ice, bringing energy and compete, so it's impressive what he's done for himself and the organization over the years. We'll give him time and support whatever decision he makes about his future. Offense will need to come from within and from new additions, with Ovechkin penciled in for 42 goals at age 38 but not able to carry the team alone anymore. More speed and size on defense could help too. It was a transition year with ups and downs but opportunities emerged for youth to develop. The early playoff exit stings but can serve as motivation to improve this offseason. Externally and internally, we'll look for ways to build on the positives and address the weaknesses to come back stronger next season. 03 Jan 2024 | The Washington Capitals pick up a win in Pittsburgh, but nearly let the game get away from them. | 00:25:28
In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Caps win over the Pens and how the game nearly got away from the Caps. Tom Wilson got the positive momentum going early in the first period. Then Beck Malenstyn kept the good vibes going when he found the back of the net. The Caps were looking for scoring from the blue line and they got it from Martin Feherevary freshly back from the IR. To add an exclamation to the first period Alex Ovechkin scores a huge goal. The second and third periods were rogh on the Capitals as the Pens staged a comeback and nearly won the game. Darcy Kuemper and the Caps had the fight and resolve to tell the Pens not this game not this time - we're taking this one home as a win. 13 Feb 2025 | Ovechkin's Miami Training Camp, Michkov's Goals, and Wilson's Season Evolution | 00:28:51
In recent episodes of Locked On Capitals, the focus has been on the Washington Capitals' star players, particularly Alex Ovechkin Ovechkin is making the most of the NHL's 4 Nations break by setting up a small training camp in Miami with his family. At 39 years old, he's still in remarkable shape, boasting 26 goals and 17 assists so far this season. With just 16 goals required to break Wayne Gretzky's all-time record, Ovechkin emphasized the importance of balancing hard work with relaxation as he prepares for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, rookie Matvei Michkov impressed with a strong performance, scoring two goals for the Philadelphia Flyers, but faced some criticism for a bold style of play. Despite struggling recently in terms of scoring points, he still ranks third in rookie scoring with 36 points in 55 games. Ovechkin offered some friendly advice to Michkov and other young players, encouraging them to focus on hard work rather than showboating. Additionally, the podcast highlighted Tom Wilson’s evolution this season, where he's reduced his fighting in favor of contributing positively on the ice, setting himself up for potential career-highs in goals and points. 06 May 2024 | Questions in net for Brian Maclellan to answer this summer. Fehervary and Leonard to IIHF tournament. Was Max Pacioretty the right guy? | 00:29:25
The Washington Capitals will have two players representing the team at this year's IIHF World Championships in May. Defenseman Martin Fehervary will be suiting up for Team Slovakia, bringing his solid two-way game to the international stage. Fehervary emerged as a reliable presence on the Capitals' blue line this season, using his speed and hockey IQ to shut down opponents' top scorers. Now he'll aim to do the same against elite talent at the Worlds. Meanwhile, forward Ryan Leonard will join Team USA's star-studded roster. Leonard, who won gold at the World Juniors earlier this year, is coming off a record-breaking sophomore season at Boston College where he tallied an astounding 41 points in just as many games. Leonard's invitation to Team USA speaks volumes about his maturity and high ceiling as a prospect. While other Capitals like Charlie Lindgren and Dylan Strome declined invites to focus on offseason training, Fehervary and Leonard are eager to gain more high-level experience. Considering the Capitals' early playoff exit, representing their countries will provide much-needed competition. It's a great chance for Fehervary and Leonard to develop further against elite international talent. If they can translate that experience back to the Capitals, it may give the team a boost toward greater success next season. Overall, Capitals fans should be excited to see these two youngsters test themselves on the global stage. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Monopoly GO! The latest LO Capitals Podcast episode highlights the Washington Capitals' impressive turnaround this NHL season, currently leading the Metropolitan Division with a record of 27 wins, 10 losses, and 4 overtime losses, largely fueled by Alex Ovechkin's pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s goal-scoring record and strong performances from players like Dylan Strome and John Carlson, the latter recently hitting 700 career points. 24 May 2024 | Assessing the Washington Capitals' Playoff Performance and Offseason Challenges | 00:28:04
With Michael Marzzaco It seems like the Capitals faced a disappointing end to their season, getting eliminated in just four games. Alex Ovechkin's slow start and the resulting lack of chemistry with his centers might have contributed to the team's struggles. With Ovechkin nearing Gretzky's record and promises made to him about playing on a competitive team, it's essential for the Capitals to assess their competitiveness. Mac's suggestion of needing a top 6 forward and the list of free agents, both unrestricted and restricted, indicate areas that the team needs to address. Additionally, the absence of Anthony Mantha and Joel Edmundson seems to have impacted the team's performance. It looks like the Capitals have some significant decisions to make in the offseason to strengthen their lineup and address their defensive needs. 09 Apr 2025 | Could Matthews catch Ovechkin? | Ovi's other goals | Kuzy's hockey days over? | 00:29:29
Alex Ovechkin has made history by becoming the all-time leading goal scorer in NHL regular season history with 895 goals, surpassing Wayne Gretzky. This achievement has sparked discussions about potential future contenders for Ovechkin's record, with Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs being highlighted as a possible challenger. Matthews remains humble about the speculation, acknowledging he has a long way to go but has impressive stats, including a goals-per-game average that challenges Ovechkin's early career pace. With projections suggesting that Matthews could reach significant scoring milestones, the hockey world will be watching closely as he and his team prepare for upcoming matchups. In addition to Ovechkin's individual achievements, he is also actively pursuing records beyond the regular season, including playoff and professional goals that encompass international play. As Ovechkin approaches the end of his contract, he remains on an impressive path to not only increase his scoring totals but also potentially add to his legacy with a chance at the 2026 Winter Olympics if international competition restrictions are lifted. Meanwhile, Evgeny Kuznetsov, another notable player, is facing an uncertain future after a tumultuous season in the KHL, where he struggled with health issues and performance, following an 11-season tenure with the Capitals.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Capitals loss to the Rangers in game one of the playoffs to the Rangers. It was a slow first period that ended with a 0-0 score. The Rangers turned it on in the second and didn't look back. Matt Rempe, Jimmy Vesey, Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider scored for the blue shirts. The only Capitals to find the back of the net was Martin Fehervary. Charlie Lindgren did what he could do to keep the Caps in the game. He saved 27 of 31. The Caps power play was poor and the Capitals weren't generating enough chances. They're back at it Tuesday night hoping for a better result. 18 Dec 2024 | Dubois Shines, Mangiapane's Comeback, and Power Play Troubles: A Caps Rollercoaster | 00:25:49
The Capitals started strong against Chicago, with Pierre-Luc Dubois scoring early and Andrew Mangiapane showcasing his skills with a stunning goal, pushing D.C. to a 2-0 lead. However, fatigue from a recent game and travel issues led to a decline in performance, marked by turnovers and being outshot. Key moments included a shorthanded goal by Ilya Mikheyev and T.J. Brodie’s equalizer, followed by Ryan Donato’s game-winner for Chicago. The Capitals struggled on the power play, finishing 0-for-3, highlighting ongoing issues with discipline and execution as they look to bounce back in future games.

14 Nov 2024 | The Capitals had a strong start but lost focus and fell to the Maple Leafs in OT. Welcome back, Lars Eller! | 00:27:12
The Capitals faced a dramatic loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, surrendering a 3-1 lead and ultimately losing 4-3 in overtime, highlighted by a strong comeback from Toronto that included key goals from Marner and Nylander. Logan Thompson performed well in goal despite the loss, stopping 31 of 35 shots, while officiating decisions played a significant role, including disallowed goals for Carlson and Lorentz. On a positive note, the Capitals' top line of Strome, Protas, and Ovechkin displayed impressive chemistry, with Strome leading the team in points. This acquisition aims to bolster the team's center depth amid ongoing challenges at that position. 08 Jul 2024 | Washington Capitals goalie tandem of Lindgren and Thompson. What about Shepard? | 00:33:02
With: Keith Leonard of RotoWire The Washington Capitals' general manager, Brian MacLellan, promised to make changes to the team. During the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas, he mentioned that the team was working on several things but didn't provide many details. He emphasized the need for the team to get younger while remaining competitive. MacLellan made significant changes to the team's roster by trading for 26-year-old Pierre-Luc Dubois, acquiring Andrew Mangiapane and Logan Thompson, and making a big move to revamp the team's defense by acquiring defenseman Jakob Chychrun and signing defenseman Matt Roy to a six-year contract. 25 Apr 2024 | What's wrong with Alex Ovechkin? Physicality in the series with the Rangers. The Caps arent waving the white flag | 00:30:46
The Washington Capitals, with Alex Ovechkin at the forefront, find themselves navigating through some challenges early in the NHL season. Ovechkin, a player known for his dynamic scoring ability and leadership, surprisingly recorded all zeros in the first game and managed only one shot on goal in the third game, signaling a potential dip in his usual high-level performance. His involvement, or lack thereof, has sparked concerns among fans and analysts alike, especially after a mishandled pass led to Mika Zibanejad scoring a goal for the New York Rangers, further highlighting Ovechkin's off moments. Ovechkin himself acknowledged the error, attributing it to an unlucky bounce but accepting the need for safer play in crucial moments. Despite his struggles, it's essential to remember Ovechkin's history of bouncing back and the team's overall strategy, including adjustments to their power-play setup and the opposition's focused efforts to limit his impact on the game. Later Dan talks about the importance of physicality in the series. And to close the show he talks about how the Caps aren't giving up and will fight until the finals whistle Join our LOCKED ON CAPS INSIDERS texting community and chat with host Dan Holmi any time by clicking this link: https://joinsubtext.com/lockedoncapitals Dan provides one on one’s, breaking news, show previews, Caps breakdowns and the very latest from your 2018 Stanley Cup winning Washington Capitals. The Washington Capitals faced a tough outing against the Winnipeg Jets, suffering a 3-2 overtime loss in a match filled with excitement and drama. Despite a standout performance from Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, Capitals' star Alex Ovechkin managed to tie the game with his 36th goal of the season, marking his third goal in five games and bringing him closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record. However, the game saw the Capitals struggle on the power play, failing to capitalize on opportunities while also facing defensive challenges that led to the Jets taking an early lead and ultimately securing the win in overtime. In other news, the Capitals made headlines with the announcement of Jakob Chychrun's impressive eight-year contract extension worth $72 million, making him the highest-paid defenseman on the roster. Chychrun expressed gratitude towards his teammates and the organization, emphasizing the camaraderie that influenced his decision to stay in Washington. With a career-high 43 points in 65 games and a prominent role in the team's future vision, his extension is seen as a strategic move for the Capitals, aligning with Head Coach Spencer Carbery's aspirations for continued success.
