The 5th-ranked Miami Hurricanes responded to a 28-3 Duke run- punctuated by a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half- with a dominating 36-3 counter-punch to close out the game and move to 9-0 on the season with the emphatic 52-31 win at The Rock. Cam Ward threw for 400 yards and five touchdowns, three to Xavier Restrepo, including the 66-yarder in the fourth quarter that made Restrepo the school’s all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards. The ‘Canes erased a double-digit deficit for the third time this season, and scored 50+ points for the fifth time, but the first time in four games. The defense came up huge today for the ‘Canes- picking off three passes- a season-high- and forcing three fumbles, recovering one. Ward’s 29 touchdown passes ties him with Steve Walsh for Miami’s single-season record, set back in 1988. Duke QB Malik Murphy threw for 325 yards, three touchdowns and thee costly interceptions. He also fumbled the ball away once. Sahmir Hagans had nine catches for 139 yards and a score for the Blue Devils, (6-3, 2-3) who had a 28-17 lead in the third quarter in Duke coach Manny Diaz's first game against Miami since The U fired the Miami native back in 2021. Miami led 14-0 early, but Duke scored on a four-play, 83 yard drive to jumpstart their 28-3 run. The Blue Devils capped that run with a touchdown on their opening drive of the third quarter to put the Dukies in prime position to win their first game against a top-5 opponent in 64 years. (now 22 straight losses) But Cam Ward and the ‘Canes answered right back with touchdowns on five of their next six second half drives- with the 36-3 run coming in barely over a quarter- and turned it into a blowout. Miami could move up a spot or even two spots, depending upon where the voters put Penn State, which was No. 3 this week but should drop after a close loss (at home) to Ohio State, and the result of the Florida-Georgia game. The Cam Ward show continues in Miami. Ward (20-25, 304 yards) threw three TD passes to three different receivers- Xavier Restrepo, Elijah Arroyo, and Chris Johnson, Jr.- and ran one in himself, leading #12 Miami to an easy 56-9 win over Florida A&M University. The ACC Preseason Player of the Year, Ward's completions went to eight different receivers, with Restrepo catching four balls for 104 yards and the score. No other Miami player had more than three receptions. Wesley Bissainthe's interception on the first drive of the game set up Miami's first score, a 17-yard pass from Ward to Arroyo. Ward then hit Restrepo for a 50-yard TD after Miami's defense held FAMU to a field goal after a long drive. Restrepo has been Ward's #1 target so far this season. Ward's third TD went for nine yards to Johnson, Jr. The Hurricanes scored on every drive except their final drive of the half, when they came up short on 4th and 4 from the FAMU 14-yard line. The Miami running game got going in the second half, with Damien Martinez- the highly-touted Oregon St transfer- scoring from 33 yards out. Martinez finished with 90 yards on ten carries. Backup Mark Fletcher, Jr added added 42 yards on five carries, including a 4-yard touchdown. Both backs are over six feet and 225 pounds. Tyler Baron had three of Miami's five sacks and five tackles- 3 1/2 of them coming for a loss. Miami had double-digit tackles for a loss, but no forced fumbles and only one forced turnover. FAMU QB Daniel Richardson is 13-17 for 135 yards but no scores. Jamari Gasset has five of those catches for 61 yards.
