02 Jun 2021 | The reality of liveaboard sailing: Epic adventures and sleepless nights | 00:47:26
My first guests are Darren and Amanda from SV Panda and oh boy do they have a story to tell! Their journey has taken them from Florida and the Caribbean to the UK, and one could say they took the scenic route as they crossed the Atlantic via Greenland. They've done all this in two years - did I mention they started with zero sailing experience? Not only do Amanda and Darren share the details of their adventure but we talk about what the liveaboard sailing is actually like, both the good and the bad. They also shed light to the financial aspects of sailing, like the cost of their bluewater sailboat and its outfitting, and the on-going monthly costs of liveaboard sailing. Here's what you can expect from this episode of Liveaboard Sailing Podcast:

Have you ever thought about the liveaboard life as a sustainable lifestyle alternative? This week I chat with Taryn and Logan from Wayward Life Sailing whose desire for travel and a more sustainable, close to nature lifestyle led them to buy a sailboat and move onboard. They were in for quite the adventure that saw them buy three (!) boats in just two years but despite a few hiccups, they are now indeed living their dream. Taryn and Logan are one of my favourite Youtube sailing channels with their realistic, down to earth and inspiring stories. This week I chat with Cory and Chris from SV Constellation, a lovely young professional couple who live on their 45 foot Freedom sailboat in Seattle. 14 Jul 2021 | Expert interview: Selecting a good bluewater sailboat | 00:42:17
In this episode I bring you something a little different as I interview John Neal from Mahina Offshore Services, and we talk all about what makes a good bluewater sailboat. John has decades and nearly 400,000 nautical miles of experience so he is the perfect person to help me understand how to avoid making boat buying mistakes and how to focus on the right things when looking at sailboats. This chat was incredibly useful and educational, so if you want to learn more about sailboats and what qualities to focus on (and what to avoid!), definitely give this one a listen. John offers boat buying and selecting consultations for anyone looking to buy a sailboat, and as part of that he has created a lot of great books and resources that are available on his website mahina.com/books. These include my absolute favourite Selecting and Purchasing an Ocean Cruising Sailboat that is available for FREE, and I also found the 5 page list of Boats to Consider for Ocean Cruising very helpful and educational. There are a lot more resources available on the website so do yourself a favour and click yourself to the website! John also runs pretty epic sounding sail training expeditions that are definitely worth checking out. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
21 Jul 2021 | Expert interview: What you need to know about boat surveys | 00:36:56
You think you have found your dream boat, but how do you know you're not buying a lemon? You have an expert do a boat survey! As a key part of the boat purchasing process, there's actually quite a bit to know about pre-purchase surveys in particular. In this episode I interview Sarah White from Yacht Associates International based out of Vancouver, Canada. Sarah explains what are the different kinds of boat surveys, how surveyors work with the client and on the boat, what surveyors do (and also what they don't do), and of course we talk about the cost of surveys and how to identify a qualified, accredited marine surveyor. This episode is full of practical tips and I learned so much about a topic I admittedly knew very little about. If you are looking to get a boat survey done or want to know how the whole process works, definitely check this episode out. 23 Mar 2022 | What you need to know about insurance | 01:08:56
This week it’s time for a deep dive into all things insurance. This episode will cover a high-level overview of the current insurance market, what exactly do insurance companies require from first time boat owners and how do we make ourselves and our boats more insurable. My guest is John Neal from Mahina Offshore Services, and he reached out to a number of insurance companies in different countries with a list of questions we put together, so the answers are coming straight from the insurance companies. And of course, since John is a boat consultant, we do talk about buying a sailboat and what we should look out for to make sure we don’t buy a boat that turns out to be uninsurable. John also gives some advice on how to find a boat in this challenging market, and why we should consider insurance implications before we seal the deal on a boat. 16 Nov 2022 | Cultivating adventure by crewing on sailboats and superyachts | 00:41:08
This week we are talking about crewing on sailboats and super yachts ⛵️🛥 My guest is author Regina Meyer, whose book Change of Course is a tale of international adventures, sailing across oceans and a bit of a memoir of Regina’s time spent living in Antigua. In this interview I ask Regina about tips for anyone interested in being crew on other people’s boats, how to avoid nasty surprises when choosing a boat to crew on, and Regina also reflects on the two sides of Antigua she experienced: living in a rural village with no electricity, and working on a $50million super yacht – all within a few miles from each other. 23 Nov 2022 | How to survive a multi-year refit | 00:39:54
This week we are going all in on boat projects! 🛠 My guests are Chris and Kelly from Youtube channel Sailing Adrift and they have just recently completed a multi-year refit of their sailboat from the early 1970s. In fact, at the time of recording, they were just one week away from splashing and it was really great to chat with Chris and Kelly at this point in their journey. They had been working really, really hard, completely rebuilding the boat – and they filmed the whole thing for Youtube – and they actually didn’t have any sailing experience, so all this work was built on the idea that the sailing life will be as amazing as they think it is. So join us as we chat about how they survived the multi-year refit, what it entailed and what’s next. 22 Mar 2023 | Real thoughts about cruising after one year | 00:45:27
This week we’re doing things a little differently, the main difference being that you won’t hear me in this episode! I asked previous guests, Jack and Sonya, from Two the Horizon to send us a bit of a real-life update as they approach their one-year anniversary of being on the move. In their first year of cruising, they left California, went up to Canada and then south to Mexico on their Passport 42. In the first episode I did with Sonya and Jack you learned that they had lived aboard in the San Francisco Bay area for many years and operated their own boat detailing business. In this episode, Sonya and Jack flow freely from one topic to another as they look back at their first year of cruising. They talk about some of the surprises they found out about Mexico, and they share some good tips on boat maintenance while on the go. There's also an insightful look at social media as cruisers. Also heads up for anyone interested in electric sailboats, listen to the end to hear Sonya and Jack's update.
