21 Mar 2024 | 047. Navigating Job Loss, Self-Worth & Finding Your Purpose | 00:37:43
I wanted to hold a special space on the podcast for a loss that’s very important to recognize: the loss of a job. Losing a job is HARD! And let’s be real, whether it’s one you genuinely enjoy or one you’re sort of “meh” about, the shock, discomfort, anxiety, and worry this can cause is undeniable. The most stress-inducing aspect of losing a job for many of us is probably the need for a stable income to support yourself or your family. But there’s so much more to this type of loss, too. We might attach a lot of our identity to our job, treasure our colleagues, deeply enjoy the work we do, love the company… the list goes on. The approach I wanted to take with this episode is not only to validate and acknowledge how difficult this is, but to talk about ways to cope with this loss the best we can. That said, I wanted to take it a step further and touch on how this grief can affect our psyche and self-worth. And to build on that, we’ll finish it out with how we can reframe our mindset if this does happen to us, and how we can move forward from there with a renewed sense of hope and purpose. 11 Apr 2024 | 050. Our Traumatic Birth Story & A Lesson In Listening to Your Intuition | 01:08:33
I can’t believe we’ve reached 50 EPISODES of the Life With Grief Podcast, my friends! To commemorate this in a big way, I’m sharing a personal story that is close to my heart—the (very traumatic) birth story of our daughter, Audrey, in January 2024. I have to be honest, I was really going back and forth on sharing this. There was definitely a time in the last two or three months where I didn’t want to relive this experience and wasn’t sure if I would ever feel comfortable talking about it. But, I think it's an important story to share. Not only because I want to be very open and vulnerable with you and my grief journey, but this birth was such an important lesson in intuition for me. I've always felt like I was a fairly intuitive person, but honestly, since the deaths of my parents and as I've continued to grow and become more introspective, I felt like this was such a beautiful example of that. I couldn’t not share it. Had I not listened to my intuition, the outcome of our daughter's life would have been very different (in other words, she would not have survived). So, I’m honored and humbled to share this experience with you today… Leave me a voice note and be featured on the podcast! https://www.speakpipe.com/LifeWithGriefWork with me: Explore my membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membershipWork with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara Connect with me further:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifewithgriefpodcast/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gainsWebsite: https://lossesbecomegains.com/Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journalBy accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. 06 Jun 2024 | 058. Raising Frequency and Vibrational Levels During Grief | 00:51:45
Let’s talk good vibrations and high frequencies! This mindset shift and being aware of what we're talking about in this episode can be pivotal as we cope with the day-to-day complexities of grief, life after loss, and life in general. Fun fact: this entire episode is based on one of my most popular blog posts! But I think this just goes to show how needed this conversation is. The overarching goal of this episode is to understand frequency and vibrational levels overall, but especially as we grieve or go through a difficult time. We’ll talk about:

25 Apr 2024 | 052. How to Cope with Insensitive Comments in Grief | 00:52:52
As if grief isn't difficult enough, insensitive, ignorant, and unnecessary comments are, sadly, a common occurrence for so many of us. These kinds of remarks will likely come our way at some point as we're grieving.Things like…

09 May 2024 | 054. 7 Reasons Why Alone Time is Important for Healing | 00:37:47
Today I wanted to have a quick conversation about why alone time is important in our grieving journey, and in our healing journey. We're going to talk about seven reasons I feel this way, both as a Grief and Transformational Life Coach and a fellow griever.I know we can sometimes want to be surrounded by people as we're grieving, and I always encourage that! Having a solid support system is critical. But the thing is, the practice of embracing alone time can lead to self-reflection, introspection, and thinking about where our life was, where it is, and where we see it going. We can't always do that if we're inundated with other people, right? All I want you to do today—no matter where you fall on this spectrum of wanting people around you—is to hear me out on this topic. I think there is so much peace to be found when we have that time alone, and here we’ll talk about why!Work with me: Explore my Life With Grief membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membershipWork with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-taraConnect with me further:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gainsWebsite: https://lossesbecomegains.com/Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journal By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. 28 Mar 2024 | 048. Navigating Grief & Loss in the Workplace | 00:45:46
Grieving and coping with a loss while still having to work do NOT mix, amirite? This can be so, so difficult, so we’re getting into it and talking about it today.Having to continue showing up at our job as we’re going through a loss is by far one of the most physically and emotionally taxing things that someone grieving has to go through. We might not have the option to stop working as we need to support ourselves or our family, but trying to do our work effectively and be a (somewhat) fully functioning human being can be one of the most uncomfortable, distracting, and overwhelming things we must endure. Meanwhile, your world is crumbling around you. In this episode, we will:
NOTE: Even if coping with a loss at work isn’t relevant to you right now, I hope you tune in because you might be able to apply some of this episode to your grieving journey—especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed with balancing your grief and daily demands, whatever they may be. 22 Nov 2024 | 082. Day 5 of Holiday Grief: Grief & Gratitude Around the Holidays... Can They Coexist? | 00:20:18
Day 5 of the 5 days of holiday grief is here! For the last episode of this mini-series, I want to talk about the balance of grief and gratitude around the holidays. And, explore the question of whether these two things can even co-exist.So many of us struggle with these contradictory emotions of grief and gratitude during the holiday season. 04 Jul 2024 | 062. How to Cope with a Loss of Identity as we Grieve | 00:36:52
“Wife”“Mother”“Father”“Sibling”“Friend”“Cousin”“Boyfriend”“Girlfriend”“Partner”“Dog mom” or “dog dad” … the list goes on. How do you identify? What identity do you feel has changed since you’ve suffered your loss? Has it evolved? Do you still identify as whatever your “title” is? Perhaps not sure yet and trying to figure it out? Maybe figuring out what this new shift in your reality actually means for you now? So relatable, my friend. When we suffer a loss, we’re left to wonder… where does this leave us? What now? For many, sadly, they find themselves asking if they deserve these titles still. In this episode this week, we're digging into that! We'll talk about how to understand the complexities of coping with feeling a loss of identity after you’ve been through a loss, and how this affects the grieving process. 14 Mar 2024 | 046. Busting Common Grief Myths with Shea Wingate, Part 1 | 00:45:44
Let’s bust some common grief myths today, my friend! We’re chatting with Shay Wingate. She’s a Licensed Therapist and Grief Coach, and a fellow griever just like me (and probably you!). She has actually graced the podcast in the past, and I’m super excited to have her back for this little series that we're doing on grief myths we constantly hear about as Grief Educators, and grievers ourselves. We wanted to make these episodes as bite-sized for you as possible, so this little series is going to be split into three parts. Today is part one of three—stay tuned for more coming soon!Shea created this awesome Grief Myths Mini Series (details are linked below!), but with that in mind, we thought this would be an awesome opportunity to come together and dispel some of these. We’re having like a fun, light-hearted, high level conversation and covering these myths today:
These myths are things that can really get us stuck in our grief, so I think it's really worth talking about! 23 May 2023 | 003. Good Grief… Where Do We Start? | 00:17:18
The term "good grief" takes on new meaning in this episode as we explore where to even begin with our grief, and how we understand it. We'll take a step back and look at what "grief" and "loss" truly mean for us. Where to start feeling it. Where to start coping with it in ways that will actually stick.Think about it: we learn 911, we learn CPR, we learn emergency preparedness. We need to know these things that may or may not happen. But what IS inevitable? Death. You can’t postpone, cancel, or delete it from your calendar. It doesn’t discriminate. So why are we so unprepared? Let's talk about it. 06 Jul 2023 | 010. Grief and Relationships with Shea Wingate, Licensed Therapist & Grief Coach | 01:00:01
The topic of grief and how it affects our relationships continues! I feel like this is a really natural continuation of last week's episode with my husband, John. If you haven't listened to that one yet, definitely go check that out! It is a pretty juicy one—that is episode 9 of the podcast. In this episode, I'm getting a fellow girlfriend's perspective on relationships and grief and chatting with Shea Wingate. She is a Licensed Therapist and Grief Coach, and truly has a breadth of knowledge when it comes to the grief space. But not only that, Shea has a very painful firsthand experience with loss as well. She goes more in-depth into this in this episode, but the long and short of it is she lost her mom, dad, and sister all in less than two years. Today, I really wanted to introduce you to her and her story because I think so many aspects of it are things you may be able to relate to or see parts of your own grief in. I know I certainly did. And, with both of us having been in relationships as we were losing the most important people in our lives, she and I had a LOT to talk about here and what that looked like and how it affected us and our partners.

25 Sep 2023 | 022. BIG NEWS: I’m pregnant! 7 Things I’ve Learned & Realized, Part 2 | 00:44:43
Part two is here, my friend! We’re really getting into the crux of the conversation. The “why” behind why this episode was even brought to life in the first place. In case you missed part 1, I talk a lot about things that I've learned and are coming to mind as I move into this new chapter of life. From dealing with unsolicited advice to how I want to show up online, to my honest thoughts on motherhood, and lots of honest things in between. But there are also some really impactful and powerful mindset shifts in part 1 that I think is super beneficial no matter where you are in your journey. So, if you're open to it, give it a listen!Part 1 certainly had some griefy aspects to it, but this really gets into the nitty gritty of my journey so far in navigating this big life event without my parents. Fears, concerns, and realizations about journeying through this pregnancy and beginning motherhood without them, and every small and big moment without them after that. And, fears that have come up as a result of the trauma of losing them so close together. Grief and trauma can truly last a lifetime, folks! In part 2, we're talking about the difficulty and emotional turmoil that can ensue from going through a major life event without loved ones. Again, you don't have to be expecting a child to gain something from this episode! As I mentioned last time, it's not simply an “I'm pregnant, look at me!” kind of episode. It's vulnerable, very raw, and from the heart, I admit and talk about some difficult things to say out loud, and I have no doubt you can relate and empathize with a lot of it—whether or not you are trying for or have a child. There are a lot of grief-related takeaways to be had here. You're going to want to give this one a listen! Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains Facebook: Work with me:

Karla and I explore the complexities of human relationships with lost loved ones and the struggle to maintain a connection in their absence. We cover topics such as the trauma of grief, and the importance of emotional growth to develop a "new" relationship with those no longer physically present. We also touch on my personal experience of using a medium to connect with my parents, which has actually been a pivotal component in my healing journey. Karla highlights practices of therapy, the need for support in the grieving process and how to tap into this, as well as the significance of attachment we have with our loved ones and how this plays a complex role in our healing journey. Today we’re talking about a really important concept that I’ve mentioned a time or two (okay, many times) in the LBG community, but I feel like is something that really needs to be acknowledged here, too. That, my friend, is the idea of pouring from an empty cup. Can you relate or empathize with this? Your gain from this episode today is to not only understand the concept of what “pouring from an empty cup” really means but, moreover, some tips on how to cope with this when it feels like you’re giving constantly and not feeling fulfilled in return. I’ve been looking forward to talking about this for a long time because I think it nicely pairs with the episode on anticipatory grief—which is episode 13, by the way! This idea of pouring from an empty cup is one I know well from personal experience and working with fellow grievers, as I’m sure you have if you've discovered this podcast, too. I have no doubt you're going to find so much value in this episode, including 11 ways to cope with this on a day-to-day basis!Membership mentioned in this episode: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membership Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegainsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/lossesbecomegainsWebsite: https://lossesbecomegains.com/Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journalBy accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. 03 Aug 2023 | 015: Grief Triggers: What They Are and How To Cope | 00:37:12
Today, we’re talking all about triggers. Grief-related or not, they can be an unpleasant and unwelcome guest in our brains and daily life. From being reminded of happier times to things our loved ones enjoyed to painful memories and more, they can be highly difficult to cope with. But there's hope, my friend! That's what this episode is all about. I can not WAIT to get into this topic with you. It sounds funny to say it’s one of my favorite things to talk about in the grief space, but... it honestly is.More importantly, it’s a really important topic to cover, too, because it’s one of the most common things that affect our healing journey. Triggers can happen as we’re in the process of losing someone or something, or have already experienced the loss and we're now sitting here trying to grapple with it.Your gain from this episode today will be to join me in talking about both common and uncommon triggers, and acknowledge and understand your triggers so they affect your day-to-day life as little as possible. With a little understanding and ways work on these (which I give you in this episode!), I have no doubt you’ll be on your way to being a happier and mentally healthier human.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegainspodcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/lossesbecomegainspodcastFacebook group: https://www.facebook.com/lossesbecomegainspodcastWebsite: https://lossesbecomegains.com/Grief Becomes Gains Online Course: https://lossesbecomegains.com/coursesShop my brand new Losses Become Gains Daily Journal! 02 Nov 2023 | 028. How To Live Fully, Happily, and Intentionally After Loss | 01:17:02
We're talking all about how to live fully, happily, and intentionally after experiencing a loss or death of a loved one. I wanted to share some thoughts on what living fully and intentionally after a loss means today, as it has been on my mind a lot lately. So, we’re getting right into it here! How do we do this in a full, happy, intentional, beautiful way that honors both ourselves and those we’ve lost? And, moreover, not just how to do this but why it’s so important! Especially coming up on holidays, what better time to really sit and think about this? To ponder how we want to end this year, process everything that has happened to us this year perhaps, and look ahead to next year. Or, maybe you don’t feel ready for any of that and just want the holidays to be over. I feel that, too! Just hear me out on this today and stick with me, because this is an insanely important mindset shift that I know will help you along your journey. But before we dig into how to live this full, vibrant life after loss, I think an important thing to address here is how we as humans process grief. Because to be able to even see and live this amazing life we have ahead of us, we have to comprehend what we’ve been through a little bit! Your gain from this episode is to understand some fundamentals of grief and why it’s such a complex thing to wrap our heads around when we lose someone. We’ll then talk about how exactly we can put this into practice and move forward as fully, happily, and intentionally as possible. 13 Jul 2023 | 012: Reflection: 3 Years Without My Dad | 00:39:32
Today is a very raw and honest solo episode as a reflection of three years without my dad, Greg Jordan. On this exact day, July 13th, three years ago, my dad succumbed to his prostate cancer.Your gain today is to get to know my dad a little better, but also to just have a very real conversation about the pain around losing a father or father figure. I'm talking about how I'm feeling, what I'm thinking, the hardest parts about being three years out from his death, and what I've learned since he died. Whether or not you’ve lost a father specifically, I have no doubt some of the things I’ll say or get into in this episode will be really relatable for you.I think these milestones are important to acknowledge and reflect back on. 25 May 2023 | 004. What Does “Moving Forward” Mean, Anyway? | 00:25:23
In today’s chat, we'll explore what "moving forward" even means when it comes to grief. And, you’ll walk away with a step in the right direction in terms of how to begin moving forward. To understand what “moving forward” really means in the grief space. We may never have full acceptance of what we’ve lost, and we might not ever be fully be at peace. We’re going to have moments of strife and pain and reminders, because our grief ebbs and flows, too.Our grief evolves and we evolve. And you know what? That’s more okay than you might think. Because these people or these things that we’ve lost, they impacted our lives. Perhaps more than we possibly knew. When we lose them, that can be unsettling! You might always feel a bit unsettled after a loss. But what can and WILL happen, I have no doubt, is you’ll come to live a “new normal” and not allow your losses to get the best of you. You just have to know that, and other wonderful things, are coming your way and it is possible. 22 Jun 2023 | 008. The Difficulty of Relating to People After a Loss | 00:37:02
One major component of life after loss is experiencing feeling like we can't exactly relate to some people the same way we used to. Which makes sense, right? We've been through some major loss, some serious trauma, and that changes us! That quite literally changes the makeup of our brain. But fear not, my friend… all hope is not lost.Join me in this conversation about relating to others after loss and all this entails. Your gain today will not only be to hopefully walk away feeling more seen and understood, but we'll also talk about some ways that we can ease this sensation of feeling misunderstood or not related to after loss. And, how we can actually use and harness this lack of relation we experience to find growth within our grief (and life!). We're getting suuuuper real in this episode, y'all. Join me in welcoming my husband John to the podcast! We're getting into the depths of what being in a romantic relationship actually looks like as you're going through a deep loss and profound grief. This is something John and I went through together, we even broke up and rekindled the relationship because of my losses, and there were a WHOLE bunch of highs and lows along the way. In this episode, we talk about how to navigate this, how to support each other, the importance of communication and patience, and how to come out of it all as unscathed as possible. And, more importantly, how this can look when one person in the relationship is losing the most important people in their life (hi, that's me when my parents died) while the partner perhaps is grieving the loss, too, but can't possibly relate to what you're feeling and experiencing. 29 Feb 2024 | 044. Understanding and Coping with Emotions as we Grieve | 00:35:58
There are a lot of misconceptions about how we feel and process our emotions, but this is a massive key to coping with our grief and unlocking this full, intentional life we want to live that I’m always going on about!I wanted this quick conversation to be about why we grieve the way we do. Why it’s so emotional, why we can feel stuck, why it can feel irrational. We’re not just validating your feelings here, we’re digging deeper about WHY exactly grief hurts so bad.Why it burns and aches in places we didn’t know we had within us, why that’s sometimes hard to understand, and why it can be so difficult to navigate on a day-to-day basis. But when we can better understand the “why” behind this, we can better understand the emotions we’re feeling and why they’re coming up so strong. That, my friend, is when we can start feeling unstuck, more patient with our grief, and even hopeful that this process will evolve and shift with time and the right grief work.Work with me:Explore my Intentional Life After Loss membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membershipWork with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-taraConnect with me further: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gainsWebsite: https://lossesbecomegains.com/Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journalBy accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. 25 Jan 2024 | 039. Growing & Learning Through Living with Grief with Karla Helbert, Part 1 | 00:48:26
Today's guest, Karla Helbert, has a breadth of knowledge when it comes to understanding and coping with loss. She's a licensed professional counselor, Compassionate Bereavement Care provider, certified yoga instructor, an award-winning author... the list goes on.But, she has her own experience with grief, too. Her life completely changed when her first born child died of a brain tumor in 2006. Her specialty now is working with those affected by trauma and traumatic death. She focuses on having compassion for the self in grief, and allowing feelings rather than judging our experiences. Learning to cultivate a "strong back”, as she calls it, and being able to grow into your personal truth independent of what others' say you "should" do. This is a major skill that helps us as we grow and learn through the process of living with grief, and we talk about that a lot in both part 1 and 2 of this episode with Karla. This mindset resonated with me so deeply as it’s very aligned with my philosophy on grief as well. 26 Jul 2023 | 013. What Is Anticipatory Grief and How To Cope | 00:48:47
Anticipatory grief is a type that I feel like people don’t—and really almost can’t—understand until and unless they go through it. It’s a type of grief that stays with us for a REALLY long time, as the anticipatory grief is happening but also even after the loss actually happens. It’s a grief I know very well, and it’s a kind that many, many people have and will experience—particularly if there’s a prolonged illness or watching a decline in some way. But it often isn’t talked about or acknowledged nearly enough in terms of how difficult it is. How profound and deep the effects of it can be. Sometimes we don’t even realize we’re going through it!Your gain today is to gain a better understanding of what anticipatory grief is, the effects it can have on a griever, and how to cope with it. 02 Aug 2023 | 014. Turning Losses Into Gains with Kate Anderson of Welkin Memorials | 00:35:25
If you've been following the podcast for a little while now, you might have heard me mention Welkin Memorials a time or two. I'm thrilled to share that Welkin's founder, Kate Anderson is joining us to talk about her story, grief journey, and Welkin Memorials urns, of course! She gives a beautiful perspective on finding gains from your losses, and I love the story of how she came to create truly the most aesthetically pleasing urns you will ever see in your life. Kate has some really amazing insights on grief and loss and how to cope with this, especially after going through her own journey of losing her dad two weeks before she turned 22. To say she is the epitome of turning losses into gains is an understatement! I just had to have her on the podcast for that and so many other reasons, and I'm so grateful that she agreed to chat with us. ”Healing”... what does this mean with grief, really? We’ll talk about that! But let's make one thing clear: the goal is not to be "healed", as though there's an end to grief or our pain. Healing is an ever-evolving process. Your gain from this is pretty simple: get an understanding of the expectations around healing your heart, and start taking small steps for yourself to tap into this healing journey you’re embarking on. Soon, you’ll be on your way to finding your happy again. And, I have four very useful tips for you today to get you started! I want for you to remember something important in case you need it today: it’s not selfish, it’s mandatory. This healing, this taking time for yourself, it’s mandatory. Let's tap into that together. 09 Nov 2023 | 029. Navigating Pregnancy, Infant, and Child Loss with Sharna Southan, Part 1 | 01:06:27
I’m so excited to share this extremely special guest, dear friend, and calming soul on the podcast today. Sharna Southan is a Pregnancy loss Practitioner & certified Trauma-informed Coach. She’s mom to her rainbow baby, a business owner, and wife based in Australia. Following her heart and soul into business after her own Pregnancy loss in 2017, like me, Sharna believes that our adversity gives us an opportunity to grow. She founded The Institute of Healing through Pregnancy Loss to support parents of loss by creating her transformative Pregnancy Loss Recovery Method, AND teaching her Signature Pregnancy Loss Practitioner™️ Certification Program. She’s also a fellow podcaster where she sheds light on pregnancy loss, healing, and recovery. Here on the LBG Podcast, we haven’t fully addressed pregnancy, infant, and child loss yet in such an intentional way. So, that’s what we’re doing in today’s episode! I thought this was not only opportune timing being pregnant myself and wanting to use this as an opportunity to educate myself, but since this episode is launching right before the holidays, I wanted to make sure we have this conversation now so we can best support those who have seen this kind of loss and might be struggling this season. But trust me, we get into WAY more here and some absolutely beautiful mindset shifts that I know you won’t want to miss. So much so that we literally talked for over two hours... and I had to split this into two episodes! Episode 29 is part one, and here we dig into her truly heartbreaking story, how this grief can affect our relationships, the loss of her father on top of all of this, how she has continued to cope with this over the years, and more. Stay tuned for next week’s episode where we get into even more about this topic, coping tools, and some impactful ways to think about and handle our grief that you are NO doubt going to want to hear! 24 Aug 2023 | 018. How to Not Feel Resentful of Someone Who Hasn’t Experienced Loss | 00:31:05
Have you ever had someone around you who hasn't experienced a loss? Or, perhaps one not as “deep” or intense as yours? Have you found this to be difficult, or perhaps even a little frustrating? These feelings can often lead to a lot of resentment. Can you relate? When I polled my audience on Instagram, this is a subject that came up multiple times so I think it’s really worth digging into in this episode. It’s honestly a great question, too. How DO we not feel resentful of someone who hasn't experienced loss? Where do we start?Your gain today will be to get a better understanding of why we might feel resentful, ways we might feel resentful, and ways to shift your mindset away from this resentment a little bit to begin coping with it and releasing it.As a taboo topic, this can be hard to admit! We might not necessarily want to carry this resentment or be proud of it, right? But so many grievers experience this, I have certainly been one of them, so we're digging into it today.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegainspodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lossesbecomegainspodcast Website: https://lossesbecomegains.com/ Grief Becomes Gains Online Course: https://lossesbecomegains.com/courses Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journalBy accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. 28 Sep 2023 | 023. Traumatic Father Loss and Growing Through Grief with Bryan Jung | 00:56:04
I'm truly honored to introduce you to Bryan Jung, Founder of "This Is Why” on the LBG Podcast today. Bryan created This Is Why as a platform and community for individuals who have lost a parent as a child or teenager. Which, I think is SO needed and valuable and is giving a much-needed voice to grief. Bryan’s dad was involved in a truly horrific incident when Bryan was just 9 years old. He survived for a year and a half but, from that event, his dad was unable to communicate and was in immense pain. I had absolute chills as Bryan was telling the story of how this all unfolded. I can’t tell you how much I appreciated his vulnerability in this conversation, and I no doubt you will as well.
Despite having different stories of how we lost our fathers, the mindset we share around finding gains from your losses and purpose from the pain is really uncanny. What he has created with This Is Why is a massive piece of this! I also enjoyed hearing his perspective from someone who lost a parent as a child.
Hearing about that experience, and how absolutely phenomenal his mother was throughout this whole journey, was something that is going to leave you insanely inspired and empowered today. I can’t say enough amazing things about this chat of ours, and how Bryan has done such a beautiful job of integrating his grief and the death of his dad into his life to add VALUE to it instead of allowing it to get the best of him.

To wrap up 2023 and welcome 2024, I wanted to share six game-changer-level things I’ve learned this year. But this isn't necessarily about me and MY learnings and how they’ve affected only me, these are things that I thought about carefully that I truly feel can apply to you as well. Because I had YOU in mind as I was doing this self-reflection and creating this episode today!Your gain from this episode is to sit back, relax, and dive into these six mindset shifts and realizations. My hope today is that these might resonate with you and inspire you going into the following year. And, if nothing else, just be something for you to walk away and think about.I also want to mention that this episode isn’t all grief-related. This is truly an overarching, all-encompassing grief AND "life after loss" sort of deal. We’ll get into some griefy things here, but I also really wanted this conversation to be a little bigger and empowering for our everyday well-being. We found each other thanks to the Instagram gods and became fast friends and are really kindred spirits in so many ways—especially because of our appreciation for some dark humor to get through and cope with our grief. She’s honestly SO funny and easy to talk to, and her story is truly one you won’t want to miss. There were things that came up in this episode that I didn’t even know about her story, and are so heartbreaking. But, also so relatable for so many of us. 30 Nov 2023 | 032. Rediscovering Life and Our Soul After Loss with Claire McDonald | 01:17:45
This episode is truly such a full-circle moment for me, because I had the pleasure of chatting with Claire McDonald. She is actually a childhood friend (since first grade!) of mine from the East Coast, back when we lived in Pennsylvania. But there’s a very specific reason I wanted to have her join me on the podcast. First, she’s the creator of SoulSpheres, which are STUNNING necklaces that weigh 21 grams to represent the weight of the soul. These pieces remind us that, as beings, our experience here goes beyond our physical body which is such an important and beautiful reminder. Moreover, she also shares her story of coping with anxiety throughout her 20s which resulted in a life-changing event that happened to her that, to use her words, “broke her open”—I had absolute chills when I heard that phrase! We're talking about what it means to rediscover yourself and your soul after loss and a traumatic experience. Whether that’s the loss of a person, a loss of sense of self, identity, and more.TRIGGER WARNING: Part of Clarie’s story involves some drug use, and there’s mention of overdosing and being in the hospital as a result. If this is at all a difficult topic for you, please feel free to come back to this episode at a later time or skip over that part. The mention of this drug use begins at the 19-minute mark of this episode. 15 Feb 2024 | 042. Meeting Our Grief Where It’s At with Grant Garry | 00:49:46
I’m thrilled to share the stage today with Filmmaker, Actor, Singer, and Certified Grief Educator, Grant Garry.Grant is the director of the documentary "Meet Me Where I Am”, which explores the topic of grief through individual stories of loss, love, and hope.It also focuses on how to "be there" for grievers, and what to do/say and what not to do/say. It features some really incredible people and voices in the grief space, and even some famous faces you would recognize that are being brutally honest and open with their grief which is SO refreshing! I was lucky enough to get a little sneak preview, and I genuinely loved this documentary so, so much. I might have shed a happy tear... or five! This film addresses topics and situations that truly need to be recognized and discussed more, and I am so here for it.It’s so encouraging to see what Grant is doing here in directing this highly-needed film to help normalize grief. This conversation today is so needed in my opinion, and I think Grant has such a unique perspective on grief having been a part of this filmmaking process. 07 Dec 2023 | 033. Reflections & Realizations: 4 Years Without My Mom | 01:16:03
Today I’m here with a very raw and honest solo episode as a reflection—and sharing realizations I've had over time—of four years without my mom, Lori Jordan. This episode is releasing a couple of days before my mom actually died, but four years ago on December 9th, my mom died due to her difficult and, frankly, brutal and graphic journey with esophageal cancer.Your gain today is to get to know my mom a little better here and there, but really to just have a very real conversation about the pain around losing a mother or mother figure and what this actually looks like over a little bit of time. And, finally, to share some things that have been on my heart lately with navigating life without her in hopes that you or someone you know can resonate with this today. If you do know someone who might benefit from this episode, I would love for you to share it! Especially being pregnant as I am currently, this year is hitting a little harder than usual. But honestly, whether or not you’ve lost a mother specifically, I have no doubt some of the things I’ll say or get into in this episode will be really relatable for you in so many ways. I think these milestones (albeit sad ones) are important to acknowledge and reflect back on. 07 Sep 2023 | 020. Things Are Happening For Me, Not To Me | 00:25:40
This concept of "things are happening FOR me, not TO me" is one I absolutely LOVE. But it’s one that isn’t always easy to see and feel, right? Your GAIN from this episode is to get a better understanding of what this actually means, but moreover, how impactful this mindset shift can be for you. This phrase is really a mindset or perspective. It suggests that events or situations in our lives are not happening randomly or without purpose, but rather they’re happening to help us learn, grow, and become better versions of ourselves. It emphasizes the idea that every experience, whether good or bad, can be seen as an opportunity for personal growth and development. And, by embracing this perspective, we can approach challenging situations with greater resilience, curiosity, and openness to learning, rather than feeling victimized by circumstances beyond our control. 21 Sep 2023 | 022. BIG NEWS: I’m Pregnant! 7 Things I’ve Learned & Realized, Part 1 | 00:38:19
Well, the time has come to announce it here on the podcast you missed it on social media. I'm pregnant! We're expecting a baby girl next February. I'll be very honest, I was hesitant to share because of the nature of this community. Not because we’re not excited, not because we don’t WANT to share, but I know so many in this community are, struggling with fertility, have lost a baby before it reached full term, have lost a child, or lots of circumstances in between.Going through this without my parents will take this new phase of life to another level. I know this because it already has, and I can only imagine how it’ll be when baby girl gets here. This very thought inspired this brand new episode on the Losses Become Gains Podcast today. I want to share some thoughts on how to move through a major life change like this without the people we’ve lost, but also providing encouragement along the way. Because we all need that no matter what life gives us, right?! Your gain from this episode (an episode that I had to split into two parts, because a lot came up for me!) is to learn seven ways I’ve changed, ways my mindset has shifted, and things I’ve realized since finding out I’m pregnant and embarking on this new phase of life. I promise, it's not simply an “I'm pregnant, look at me!” kind of episode. It's vulnerable, very raw and from the heart, I admit and talk about some things that are difficult to say out loud, and I have no doubt you can relate and empathize with a lot of it—whether or not you are trying for or have a child. This episode focuses on so much more than just this pregnancy, there are a lot of grief-related takeaways to be had here. I put a lot of thought and love into this one, and I'm so excited to share it with you. 07 Mar 2024 | 045. Feeling Like We’re Moving Backwards in Our Grief (and How to Cope!) | 00:34:42
Do you ever feel like you're moving backward in your grief? Worry not, my friend. You're not, and we're going to chat about why in this episode!I’ve had countless people come to me with feeling like they’re moving backward in their grief journey, and this is a legitimate concern! Why? 1) It’s stressful! We worry that there’s something wrong with us or we're "grieving wrong". 2) There's concern this is going to be a permanent state and that we won't "get through it". 3) We might worry this negativity will always haunt us, and this moving backward feeling will always be on our toes. But what if I told you there’s just no such thing? We'll talk about this, why this happens, and ways to cope. Because grieving is a unique and non-linear process, and as something that comes and goes in intensity, experiencing setbacks is a normal part of the journey. So, let's dig into this together! 22 Nov 2023 | 031. How to Cope with the Coulda, Woulda, Shouldas of Grief | 00:54:32
I’ve heard all kinds of woulda, coulda, shouldas in the grief space, and I've definitely experienced some of these firsthand, too! In a way, whether we realize it or not, we want to believe we have control over death or the past. That it wouldn’t have happened if were adequately prepared or more vigilant. But, death happens, right? While guilt is very valid, guilt can also be a distraction. Guilt can fill our heads with noise that keeps the worst of our pain at bay and almost keeps us busy, in a way.For argument's sake... maybe we woulda. Maybe we coulda. Maybe we even shoulda! But the thing is? We didn’t. A lifetime of self-loathing and misery won’t change that. So, how do we cope with this? Your gain from this episode is to learn how to cope with those feelings of things we coulda, woulda, or shoulda done or said in our grief.Explore the membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membershipConnect with me further! 11 Aug 2023 | 016. Coping with the Wedding Process Without a Loved One | 01:04:39
With this being wedding season, I wanted to put this episode out into the world in a hopefully timely way because I know there are so many people in this community that are perhaps newly engaged, going through the wedding process, or are perhaps very soon about to get married.I want to first start by acknowledging that weddings can be stressful enough, regardless if someone meaningful to you isn’t there to witness your special day–whether they’ve passed away or couldn’t make it, you had a falling out, whatever it is.I feel like I’m pretty well qualified to talk about this topic, particularly because last year I went through two weddings (we had two ceremonies) without my mom and dad. As a bride who had a lot on her plate during the months of planning, on top of going through all of this without them… this process wasn’t easy for a variety of reasons, really–parent-related and not.Your gain from this episode today is to learn how to cope with a loss during a wedding, and find ways to make sure you find your happiness and peace on your big day. 12 Oct 2023 | 025: Navigating Grief and Life Courageously with Tina Hoang | 00:52:00
Today we have truly one of the sweetest souls I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with on the podcast so far! Tina Hoang is a recovering people pleaser, podcaster, and inner child healer. She strives to ensure that women have the space to choose themselves and share their courageous stories.Whether it’s changing how you are perceived within a family dynamic, leaving a comfortable 9-5, advocating for yourself when someone is being rude, and beyond. She empowers others to dive within themselves to heal their inner child, and play more often as adults! Who doesn't need that, right? When it comes to her grief, after losing her very first sweet dog and multiple people around her, she has learned not to fear death and so much more about what navigating death, grief, and loss entails. Her story is not only heart-wrenching (tears were shed in this episode, guys), but it’s incredibly motivating and eye-opening. There is probably SO much you’ll be able to relate to here, and I know this episode will kick your mindset into an entirely new and very uplifted gear if you’re struggling to find the joy in life again. 14 Sep 2023 | 021. Enduring Multiple Losses & Changing the Grief Narrative with Angie Hanson | 00:49:34
Angie Hanson created her greeting card brand called Butterflies + Halos after enduring multiple losses over the years. She has over 130 completely unique, beautifully crafted grief and bereavement cards. Seriously, these are not your average condolence cards! But Angie is also a grieving mom who lost her son to a heart condition they weren’t aware he had just after his first birthday. Not long after she also lost her husband, brother, and even her sister-in-law.After that much loss, you might be wondering how someone can even function properly each day let alone find love and so much light in their life. But let me tell you, Angie has and then some! She’s on a mission to change the narrative around grief and the stigma it brings to our society. For Angie, grief and loss are many things. But a huge aspect of her mindset is always being aware of where we are and how far we’ve come.Angie's mindset is that there is light to be found in our losses. It takes time, but finding the ability to ask ourselves how can we share hope and guide others through their journey, too, is such a gift in our grief. 04 Jan 2024 | 037. Determining Your ”Word” & Setting Intentions for the Year | 01:13:56
It's officially a new year, a new breath of fresh air, new vibes, maybe a renewed sense of self or reset moving forward… Or, perhaps you’re still struggling with some grief and loss from the previous year or even further back than that. Maybe this is still holding you up a bit, and you’re feeling stuck going into this year. That’s okay! Just because a new year arrives doesn’t mean all of us feel this blank slate. We don't always experience this profound and wonderful new beginning. It's not always that straightforward, right?Today, your gain from this episode is to not just learn how to set intentions for the year (you can Google that, right?). We’ll dig into why intentions are so powerful, and how they can set us up with a better mindset in a more impactful way. We'll also talk about how and why determining a “word” of the year is such an awesome practice—especially while dealing with some form of grief. If this feels intimidating or like it's too much, or if it feels like you’re already behind… release that right now. You’re not behind, you’re exactly where you’re meant to be. You’re not in a deficit. This is something you can do on YOUR terms in the way that it feels most aligned to you. This is a zero-pressure zone! All I want to help you do is begin this process if you need a pick-me-up, guidance, or inspiration—whenever you choose to do this practice. Her story is not only one of immense loss, but also inspiration, grace, gratitude, and finding a beautiful perspective on life after loss.Patti brings a wealth of knowledge after caring for both parents, volunteering with people with neurocognitive disorders, and as a community educator for the Alzheimer’s Association. She is also a former educator with her Master's in Instructional Leadership, is a Certified Dementia Practitioner, and so much more. 22 Feb 2024 | 043. Making Decisions While Grieving a Loved One | 00:33:14
Having to make decisions when a loved one’s health is declining, or even after they've died, is not only difficult but is something we can question over and over again. We can question whether our decisions about things are the right ones through the fog of our grief, and not even want the weight of that responsibility, right? So, if we’re faced with decisions like this, what do we do? What do we do if we HAVE to make decisions, be it about their health, their estate, legal issues, decisions that affect our family, etc.?Your gain from this episode will be to join me in identifying how and why making decisions around our loved ones can be one of the most confounding parts of the process before they die, and even after they die. You know I’m all about coping tools, so we’ll also get into some ways to better cope with this, feel a little better about it, and find some peace with it all.Work with me:Explore my Intentional Life After Loss membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membershipWork with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-taraConnect with me further: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gainsWebsite: https://lossesbecomegains.com/Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journalBy accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. 11 Jan 2024 | 038. Creating a Routine and Why It’s Important in Grief | 00:22:36
While we continue to welcome the new year, I wanted to use this opportunity to talk about the importance of creating a routine. But, as we always do, we're putting a griefy spin on this topic! Your gain will be to understand how and why a routine is so critical, especially for those who are grieving. And yes, there can definitely be some major benefits to this… it's not simply to add more to your heavy plate! The thing I love about creating a routine we can count on—no matter if it's one step or seven—is two-fold.
When you fill your routine with things that are uplifting and beneficial to your health and wellness, you're more likely to want to get up and do them instead of wanting to go back to bed, right? So, we’ll deep dive into the reasons for this and how exactly a solid routine can and will help you in your grief journey. 21 Dec 2023 | 035. 7 Ways to Visualize Your Best, Most Abundant Life | 00:38:51
As we’re nearing the end of this year, I wanted to begin leaving you with some inspiration and things to noodle on as we close out 2023 and say a big hello to 2024. One way I love to do this, whether entering a new year or not, is to do some visualization. Visualization is an amazing thing to do whether or not you’re grieving, let’s be real! But I find that, with grievers especially, we can be so lacking in hope, a way forward, direction, and any semblance of a good, full life after what we’ve been through. Loss and adversity have a nasty way of stripping that from us. But not to fear! I assure you—and I know this not only from my own experience, but those whom I’ve coached—visualization exercises, prompts, and meditations are super powerful and very empowering as well. They can leave us feeling a semblance of hope and optimism, and perhaps even some excitement, when we feel like we have little left in us. With that, I’m sharing 7 ways to practice visualizing your best life after loss! What we'll chat about in this episode is perfect for going into a new season of life or year, or can be done on any ol’ day. Zero pressure here, that’s the beauty of it. 19 Oct 2023 | 026. 10 Ways to Set Boundaries In Your Grief | 00:39:40
Setting boundaries has become more and more critical in our fast-paced, highly interconnected world. Whether it's in our personal or professional lives, establishing healthy limits helps us protect our mental and emotional well-being. When could that be more important than when we’re emotionally taxed with grief after a loss, right?Let me remind you: boundaries are not selfish. Boundaries are a form of self-care! They ensure that we respect ourselves and others while maintaining our sanity and happiness (or some semblance of this, whatever we can find in grief… amitire?). 14 Dec 2023 | 034. Family Loss and Navigating Grief with Shea Wingate | 01:06:14
Shea Wingate is a Licensed Therapist & Grief Coach, and has actually graced the airwaves of the LBG Podcast before way back in episode 10! There we talked all about grief and relationships, specifically. But today, we’re really getting to know her backstory because I think so many facets of it are things you may be able to relate to, or see parts of your own grief in. Shea lost her mom, dad, AND sister all within about two years. And, with both of us having lost parents and trying to navigate that, she and I had a LOT to talk about here. What that looked and felt like, and how it affected us in so many aspects of our lives. I think you’ll find so much value in this conversation today, from "yes, I can relate to that!" moments to discovering best practices to cope, and more. Shea truly has SO much knowledge when it comes to grief and how to cope on a day-to-day basis, you will not want to miss this one—especially if you are or have endured multiple losses back to back and are just trying to find your footing and figure out how to manage it all.
