Hello hello, welcome to Episode 48 of Life on the Brink!

It’s no secret here that I love cooking. Like, I really love it.
For many people, though, cooking beyond your basic pan fry or pasta dish can seem really intimidating, and I hope to dispel that intimidation so that you can love it too! Today we’re talking about some simple techniques that will really up your game in the kitchen. Cooking is like jazz; it's built upon form and structure, but once you learn the rules you can go wherever you want.

In this episode I'll share:
-9 essential techniques that take your cooking to the next level
-lots of great resources to get you started
-recipes that have changes my culinary life
-a few kitchen "hacks" that make things so much easier

Plus, we're staying in the kitchen for this week's Little Joy, and I'm sharing a romantic, totally original and ingenious music album.

17 Feb 2022Living Slowly + how to enjoy the important things00:38:08

Hello hello, welcome to Episode 49 of Life on the Brink!

Often, our modern-day world moves so fast, sometimes the days feel much too short.  We can find ourselves wrapped up in trying to balance work, family, the home, projects, and all sorts of things, and it begs the question: “Is all this really necessary?” And even within our obligations like work and family, I believe there are ways we can refocus and find slowness in our routines and in our downtime.

Today we're drawing from Melanie Barnes' book "Seeking Slow," and we’re going to talk about a couple different things like:
-understanding your priorities
-what "mindfulness" really looks like
-the role of technology and work in our modern schedules
-simple ways to help slow down and enjoy your life

Plus, I'm sharing a delicious Little Joy, and a unique album that I can't stop listening to.

03 Mar 2022Embracing Adventure + how to make travel a part of your life00:43:57

Hello hello, and welcome to Episode 50 of Life on the Brink (wow)!

I never really identified myself as an adventurous person until quite recently. I think it’s because I always saw myself more as a steady, calm, routine-oriented person, and sometimes those qualities are presented as the antithesis of a carefree, adventurous spirit. This is by no means the case, though! We can be all of those things, and today I’m encouraging myself and everyone listening to embrace their sense of adventure.

In this episode we're talking about:
-what it actually means to be adventurous
-how and why to make travelling a part of your beautiful life
-ways to save and plan for upcoming trips
-how to have adventures in your own city
-travel anxiety and the unknown

Plus, I have not one, but TWO Little Joys this week, as well as a Brazilian-inspired custom playlist to help lift your winter spirits.

Hello hello, and welcome to Episode 53 of Life on the Brink!

When spring rolls around, I feel inspired to create, to make things and to indulge new ideas. Along with that, I’ve been thinking a lot about art, hobbies and the creative process. Sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin, or sometimes you’re so far removed from that place of creativity that you don’t know how to get back to it.
Whether you paint, draw, knit, sing, sew, write, dance, or even just want to try any of them, this is for you.

In this episode I'll be sharing:

21 Jul 2022Technology Mindfulness w/ Rob Krecak00:51:39

Hello hello, welcome to Episode 60 of Life on the Brink!

Today I'm so excited to present my conversation with Rob Krecak, founder and Chief Connection Officer of Humans First. Rob's goal is to help people and companies use technology in a way that serves them best.
Technology can be amazing and helpful and enriching, but it can also be detrimental. What if we could use all of the good, while letting go of the unhelpful? Today we're talking all about mindfulness: observing yourself and your life to see how technology may or may not be serving you well.
We're all about enjoying our days here, and this is a very thought-provoking (but non-pressuring) conversation that brings up some helpful questions.

In this episode we're talking about:
-what technology mindfulness means and ways to implement it
-the best ways technology can serve you
-a root cause of many people's anxiety
-how to identify burnout
-ways to work more efficiently so you have more time to rest

Plus, Rob shares an inspiring Little Joy and a FIRE music mix (seriously).

18 Aug 2022Ten Ways to Enjoy the End of Summer00:28:00

Hello hello, welcome to Episode 64 of Life on the Brink!

We’ve now ventured well into August and are faced with one of the more confusing stretches of the year. Consider this:

-we welcome winter without realizing it because it comes with Christmastime.
-we welcome spring with open arms after winter becomes dreary.
-we welcome summer with the end of summer and the opening of local pools. It’s like spring, but more alive.
But summer…..where does it end?

While I love anticipation and will continue to look forward to the fall season, we still have quite a bit of time in between now and then. And that time is precious, able to be savored instead of passed over.
In this episode sharing some things that I’m loving as we enjoy these last days of summer.

Plus, I'm  sharing a new-to-me Youtube find, and a cozy album that has been making the August transition smoother.

17 Nov 2022Practicing Gratitude (plus a huge life update)00:30:30

Hello hello, welcome to Episode 74 of Life on the Brink!

Here in the U.S. we’re entering into the week of Thanksgiving, a day set aside to be grateful for those around us and, let’s be real, eat a delicious meal. This season has made me think, though, about the act of being grateful, the practice of gratitude itself. I’ve heard of “gratitude journals” and whatnot, but I became curious about what the act of “thanksgiving” actually does in your mind and body.

With that, I hit the books. I’ve done some research into gratitude and some very interesting findings. Not surprisingly, it’s actually incredibly beneficial and can help reframe our whole perspective!

In this episode I'm sharing:
-what practicing gratitude looks like
-scientific studies on gratitude's affect on mental health
-why gratitude makes an impact
-the power of your own perspective
-simple ways to embrace gratitude this season

Plus, Our Little Joys for the week are sweet and exciting. I'm sharing one autumnal recipe and one BIG life update.

12 Jan 2023Favorite Books of 2022!00:36:31

Hello hello, welcome to Episode 79 of Life On the Brink, and Happy New Year!

It’s time again for one of my favorite episodes: the annual book recap! Today I’m sharing all of the best books I read in 2022, as well as some of your top-rated reads.

Last year I had a goal to read 30 books, and ended up reading 35! I don’t make a lot of goals or resolutions when it comes to the New Year, but I really enjoy making this reading goal each year because it’s a hobby that I’m quick to forget I love. I’ve slowly made reading a part of my life again over the past couple of years, and it’s just so enjoyable, so this goal simply serves to challenge me to do more of what I love.

And if you, like me, want to read even more in 2023, I have a lovely list of books to get you started!

Plus, this week's Little Joy is a bookish moment I had in the middle of a very special trip, and I'm sharing a playlist of soundtracks to make your winter reading a bit more magical.

19 Jan 2023Taking Care of Yourself When You Feel Overwhelmed, Anxious or Burnt Out00:35:21

Hello hello, welcome to Episode 80 of Life On the Brink!

While it's not uncommon for us to need a few sick days during the winter, I think that probably most of our "rough days" aren't due to physical illness or ailment, but rather a mental and emotional place.  It's very easy to get in our own heads, to overthink and overanalyze, becoming overwhelmed. The winter season, or perhaps a new transition or challenge, can certainly make things a little more tricky. Sound familiar?

Well, friend, you are not alone, and while this podcast is a place where we consistently examine and adjust and reflect upon our lives in order to better cherish our everyday lives, sometimes we need a little extra help.

In this episode I'm sharing:
-how to approach a day when you feel overwhelmed
-simple ways to bring a bit of comfort to your day
-things that have personally helped me (even this week!) in the
midst of a big transition
-reminders to be kind to yourself

Plus, this week's Little Joy is my new comfort show, and I'm sharing an album of winter-inspired music that is gentle and sweet.

02 Feb 2023Kitchen “Gadgets” That I Actually Use00:33:45

Hello hello, welcome to Episode 82 of Life On the Brink!

I love cooking, and the organization of my kitchen has always been a priority, especially since the space is quite small. Though I'm creative with the storage, I’ve really had to prioritize what I keep in my small kitchen.

Of course, there are the pots and pans, knives and cutting boards, cooking utensils and baking dishes, but I’ve also made room for a few more specialized tools.
Now, I know that these days there’s a gadget for absolutely every cooking task imaginable, most of which I deem entirely unnecessary. There are a few interesting pieces of cookware, though, that have remained staples in this tiny kitchen and are definitely going to be prioritized in our new home.

In this episode I'm sharing my Top 10 kitchen "gadgets," along with a few timeless pieces that I have yet to try.
Plus, this week's Little Joy is a return to a classic comfort drink, and I have a playlist for romanticizing your time in the kitchen.

Hello hello, welcome to Episode 84 of Life On the Brink!

During the winter season, there are some rituals that become even more essential, and I often find skincare becoming a higher priority. As spring approaches, it’s a wonderful time to look at your skincare routine to help determine what’s working for you and to pay attention to what your skin needs.
Our skin is just one part of our external selves, but I can personally attest that when my face is clear and glowy, I carry a bit more confidence knowing that I’m literally putting my best face forward.

In this episode I'm talking all about:
-the four main steps of a facial skin care routine
-affordable products that have served me well
-skin care changes to consider in the upcoming season
-embracing your natural beauty

08 Jun 2023You Have Permission To Enjoy Your Life! (thoughts on productivity and guilt)00:29:10

Hello hello, welcome to Episode 90 of Life On the Brink!

Have you ever felt guilty for having an easy day? For not getting enough done?
As we enter into the new summer season, there’s so much to celebrate and enjoy. So much, in fact, that at times I feel pressure to get out there and enjoy it all! We’re entering a less structured time of year (which is so lovely), and whenever I’m in a season where less is required of my time I can really get into my head about what to do with every hour of the day.
Without goals to meet, deadlines to make, or achievements to collect, what is left of our lives?

SO so much more, my friend, so today I simply hope to encourage you. This week has been a bit of an adjustment, and in some ways has been really easy, so let’s talk about how to enjoy that ease rather than feel guilty for our own lives.

Plus, this week's Little Joy was a true welcome to the start of summer, and I'm sharing an album of vocal jazz that's almost 100 years old!

Hello hello, welcome to Episode 91 of Life On the Brink!

Today I return to the podcast after a week of playing music on the road! Naturally, the past week has been so interesting and so different from my usual routine of garden-tending and grocery shopping, and the change of pace has re-introduced some very important aspects of living well that I sometimes forget about. This week I’d like to share a few of those moments (including the title sardines) and how they have refreshed my outlook on the rest of this summer season.

Plus, this week's Little Joy is a simple item that has filled my kitchen with coziness, and I have lots of cool music to share as well.

27 Jul 2023Date Night: ideas for fun, excitement and closeness (on a budget)00:37:02

Hello hello, and welcome to Episode 94 of Life On the Brink!

Even as we cultivate our beautiful daily lives, every now and then life calls for a bit of elevation and celebration. Today we’re talking about one such celebration: Date Night.
Sometimes it’s easy to do the same (and sometimes expensive) things, and suddenly an experience that was designed to elevate you outside your normal routine becomes a routine in itself. How do we create a fun and satisfying night with your sweetheart, even after many years together?
Expense is by no means the greatest determining factor, and today I’m sharing lots of Date Night ideas that, despite their modest budget, can make for an exciting and fun evening.

In this episode I'm sharing:
-what makes a "good" date night
-scientific findings about closeness and relationship growth
-recipes for a night in
-lots of local date ideas to try in your area
-ways to converse to learn more about your partner

10 Aug 2023Home Sweet Maison: Embracing French style and ritual in the home00:39:56

Hello hello, and welcome to Episode 95 of Life On the Brink!

I’m so excited for today’s episode, as it’s inspired by a delightful book that focuses on the art of designing one’s home while speaking to my Francophile heart. The book is “Home Sweet Maison: The French Art of Making a Home” by Danielle Postel-Vinay, and what a delight it is!  Much about the French way of living aligns with what I try to emphasize here at Life On the Brink: the celebration of the everyday, finding comfort in curated rituals, and emphasis on conversation and culture, among others. To that end, I have carefully combed through this book, making note of the things that I either have already enjoyed in my home or am now inspired to incorporate as I continue to renovate and decorate.

This episodes includes:
-ways to highlight the living and cooking spaces
-embracing the joy of mealtime rituals
-living with both thrift and luxury
-new organization techniques
-ways to connect your home to those in it

Plus, this week's Little Joy (actually two!) are the season premiers of some fantastic summer shows, and I'm sharing a classic French album to bring a whimsical atmosphere to your home.

Hello hello, and welcome to Episode 104 of Life On the Brink!

Christmastime is such a special time of year, not only because it’s filled with special music, food, and family traditions that we can only experience once a year, but because there’s an intangible spirit of goodwill and charity that appears. 12 Dec 2024A Restful Christmas at Home: slowing down, simplifying, and enjoying holiday comforts00:47:51

Hello hello, and welcome to Episode 121 of Life On the Brink!

Every Christmas is unique, but this year is so unlike any other. This year I’m a mom and it’s my little girl’s very first Christmas, which is so special! It also means that I have less time and less energy than most holiday seasons of the past.

I usually do the absolute most during the Christmas season, and while I do love the hustle and bustle, it’s draining. So this year I’m doing what’s necessary, and letting the rest go. In the place of some of that hustle, I’m enjoying slower days, mostly at home with my little family, and today I’m sharing some of those days with you. Activities, crafts, recipes, music, all the things that are making this (very different) Christmas season more restful and beautiful.

Plus, this week's Little Joy is a very popular joy right now, but nevertheless so inspiring and enjoyable, and I'm sharing the holiday album I've had on repeat this Christmas season.

23 Sep 2020The Essentials of Tea + why it's wonderful00:46:00

Hello, and welcome to episode 6 of Life on the Brink!

This episode has me particularly excited because it’s about TEA.

I love tea so much, but I’ve found that it has the potential to be pretty intimidating, or at least confusing. I posed this question on my Instagram and was met with some interesting questions that I hadn’t thought of before. I personally love drinking and learning about this fun little plant, and today I hope to help answer some of those questions.

Today we’ll explore:
-how tea compares to coffee
-the different types of teas (and a few important variations)
-what the deal is with loose-leaf tea and how it compares to tea bags.
-a few of my personal favorite blends
-how to make a perfect cup of tea!

Well I sometimes wait to watch any of my favorite movies until the season matches it. It's such a lovely thing to look forward to, so today I've brought on my sister Sarah to share:

-What makes a film an "autumn movie"
-Our (loose) Top 10 favorite picks
-The secret Perkins family popcorn
-Sarah's Little Joy

23 Oct 2020Making Special Days Special (7 ways to celebrate)00:26:03

Hello, and welcome to episode 8 of Life on the Brink!

I don't know about you, but I love traditions. We need birthdays, holidays, small getaways, date nights, and milestones to add a little color to our everyday lives, but without looking too far ahead.

I love looking forward to these time-honored pastimes that not only mark the passing of the year, but also encourage us to really celebrate these special days. This year, though, as we’ve all experienced, has been a little different. We can’t necessarily go where we want to go or do what we normally do to celebrate. Just the ability to gather is a luxury, and not everyone can afford it right now. What can we do then?

In  episode I'll share 7 simple ways to make special days special, no matter the circumstances, because, even now, we are worth celebrating.

Plus, stick around for this week's delicious Little Joy, and a custom playlist that is cozy, jazzy, and perfect for autumn.

Hello hello, and welcome to episode 9 of Life on the Brink!

Autumn is here! It's very much so here.
Josh and I returned home from our impromptu honeymoon on October 31 to discover that the autumn chill had settled in Virginia while we were gone.

In  episode I'll share 7 simple daily practices that I'm adding into my routine this season to really soak up all the warm cozies that autumn has to offer. Plus I'm linking LOTS of soup recipes.

02 Dec 2020Homemade Christmas: simple touches for the home00:18:54

Hello hello, and welcome to episode 11 of Life on the Brink, and the first of our holiday special!

We’re officially all the way into Christmastime! The flashiness and excitement isn’t what’s drawing me into Christmastime this year. Instead, I’m enjoying being at home and having some simple touches of Christmas throughout the home.

In this episode I’ll share some homemade (or naturally derived) festive decor ideas. Maybe one or two will pop out to you and spark some Christmas imagination. We've got foraging, crocheting, sweet smells, and lots of links for further inspiration!

I’m basically thinking of that scene from Little Women (1994 obvs) where they have Christmas in the middle of the movie. It’s simple, yet magical.

14 Jan 2021Cozy ways to enjoy winter days00:37:33

Hello hello, and  welcome to Episode 16 of Life On the Brink, and Happy New Year!

We're off to a good start, because today we’re talking about a very special book that has become my first read of the year.
The book is Cosy: The British Art of Comfort by Laura Weir.

Real coziness isn’t an aesthetic you have to project to others, it’s how you live your life as your most honest, comfortable self. Today I'm sharing my 8 cozy takeaways from this book that I’m incorporating into my daily life this winter in order to make my home, routines, and life more COZY.

Then stick around for this week's Little Joy, (queue up Netflix), and my favorite cozy album.

27 Jan 2021Winter Movie Night w/ my sister Sarah00:41:48

Hello hello, and welcome to episode 17 of Life on the Brink!

This week I am joined once again by our first-ever returning guest, my sister Sarah, to talk about our favorite movies to watch during the winter season. You may recall our shenanigans in Episode 7 when we discussed our favorite autumnal films, and now we're back with a (much needed, eclectic and cozy) winter edition!
This is the time to bundle up on the couch with a hearty meal or big bowl of popcorn and enjoy being inside where it’s warm. This is also the time of year when we’re more likely to indulge in a more cerebral, serious movie, but not without countering it with cozy happy films (at least in my house).

Today we're sharing:
-What makes a film an "winter movie"
-Our Top 10 (really a loose 11 or 12) favorite picks
-Lots of opinion and rationale
-Sarah's inspiring Little Joy

Plus I've curated a best-of playlist from these film's soundtracks to take your ears on a magical winter journey.
